Do you clean your makeup brushes enough?? Not doing so can lead to a lot of bacterial growth and in turn, blemishes and breakouts. You should clean your brushes and sponges with a mild liquid soap, squeezing out any excess water with a towel and letting them air dry, every two weeks.

The key to determining your SPF is identifying your skin type. Here are the six main skin types. Determine which one you are and then reference the SPF Chart below to maximize your protection when exposing yourself to the sun. Following these basic guidelines should ensure a nice even tan without burning.

Type 1 - Always burns easily, never tans, extremely sun sensitive. Includes red heads, freckle faced individuals.

Type 2 - Burns easily, tans minimally, also sun sensitive. Includes fair skinned, fair haired people. Many Northern Europeans fall into this group.

Type 3 - Sometimes burns, tans gradually to light brown, some sun sensitivity. Common among darker haired Caucasians.

Type 4 - Burns minimally, tans to moderate brown, and virtually no sun sensitivity.

Type 5 - Rarely burns, tans well, sun-insensitive skin. Includes Middle Eastern People, some Hispanics, some African Americans, and some native Americans.

Type 6 - Never burns, deeply pigmented, sun-insensitive skin.

Paraben Free Isn't What it Used to Be

Parabens are chemicals used to preserve everything from shampoos to moisturizers to toothpastes. They are also used as food additives. Their low cost and efficacy as preservatives explains why parabens are so commonplace in all of our skin care products. Over the years, however, they have become increasingly controversial having been classified as endocrine disrupters and being linked to breast cancer. Another concern with parabens is that the estrogen mimicking properties of them may be a factor in the increasing prevalence of early puberty in young girls. While there are many studies supporting both sides, there is no end all be all concrete evidence that long term use of parabens will lead to health problems. My opinion, however, is why take the chance.

All this being said, many of you already know that I am a big supporter of paraben free products. Both the Ilike Organic Skin Care and KB Organic Blends lines that I use in my services are paraben free. But lately paraben free doesn't mean what it used to. Many companies are jumping on the paraben free bandwagon only to preserve their skin care and cosmetic products with other chemical preservatives. Preservatives with even less long term research in their toxicology reports. So we really won't know how safe they are until 10 years from now when a law firm's commercial comes on in the middle of the night saying, "Did you use products with (insert chemical preservative name here) in it? Are you now suffering from (insert random health problems and symptoms here)? Then you may be eligible to join this class action lawsuit".

The bottom line is be informed. Read labels and look up the skin care ingredients in your products on the Environmental Working Group's (EWG) cosmetic database. Here you will get the all the health concerns of an ingredient including ratings on overall hazard, cancer, developmental & reproductive toxicity, allergies & immunotoxicity, ecotoxicology and use restrictions. We can't do it all. It is hard to be 100% natural and organic all of the time especially with all of our different budgets, lifestyles and the ever changing labeling laws. But we can keep ourselves informed and make the best choices possible to protect our skin and overall health.

It's that time of year again and pumpkin coffee, cakes and products are popping up everywhere. I just saw pumpkin Greek yogurt at Trader Joe's the other day!! Yum. KB Organic Skin Care & Waxing was established in 2008. After working in the industry and studying the physiology of the skin for over ten years, I knew I needed to go organic. I also knew that in order to treat the skin and my clients the way they deserved, I would have to go out on my own. And thus KB Organic Skin Care & Waxing was born. For the past 5 years I have built a business on customized treatments for both the face and body. All my customized organic facials are either 60 or 90 minutes and include a lip and eye treatment, or whatever else you may need that I can accomplish within the time selected. My body treatments can treat almost any ailment from A-Z and include a pressure point facial and scalp massage. I believe this concept of fully customized services, that don't nickel and dime the client into upgrades once on the treatment table, is what makes my skin care business stand out. I also offer eyebrow and eyelash tinting and have my own line of custom blended skin care serums.
