Hot off the presses, Sketchbook by Rubber Ducky came through Jamendo a couple of days ago. This is not electronic, nor is it avant-garde, and definitely not pop; so a bit of a departure from many of my posts. You may think I am being a little heavy on Jamendo, but so many Creative Commons Licensed releases come through it that BSWC could probably be a podcast focused on Jamendo and not run out of interesting music.

Sketchbook is fun to listen to from start to finish. Real instruments, male and female vocals, lots of drums and guitar. I'd like to see Rubber Ducky live. However, there seems to be no information about the band anywhere. Certainly none on Jamendo. RubbyD please post some!

This tune is reminiscent of the Proclaimers (just a little) but with a great female vocal.

Well, the pace continues and it was only a matter of time before our attention returned to ccMixter, the Creative Commons remix site. If you have visited and sampled the goods, then do yourself a favor and check this out. To start I went through the Editor Picks and very quickly found this track, timely, topical and downright excellent.

Noisy, raucous, rude and brilliant fun. Those krazy kids Do Kashiteru finds their groove and then dare you to get the hook(s) out of your head. Beneath all the flash bombs is a damn fine piece of arranging that despite gong-ing themselves, shows off a real talent.

Hell, I forgot how much fun it is to hunt for CC music across the net. I love this one. It is a release by an artist called Roglok on a netlabel called upitup. The release goes by the name Out of disorder.

According to the release notes he turned in a monster set at a picknick date in Berlin. Is there video?

With his second album Roglok releases yet another insane masterpiece. It seems that the kid who designed our website has not only found his own sound (we call it hobby) but also brought it to perfection: gummy acid basslines over punchy dancefloor beats, that ridiculous melody you can't get out of your head, some gabber and techno. His legendary set at Picknick in Berlin turned the place upside down and made the hipsters lose their aloofness. You just have to dance!

Give this one a shot.

Pornophonique - Sad Robot

Following up on two themes, robots and Jamendo, here is a track that I've been listening to for quite some time and have neglected to post. Sad Robot is a track off of Pornophonic's 2007 release 8-bit lagerfeuer. It has lots of tasty components for me: 8-bit samples, robots, and catchy progressions. Also a good album cover -- we shouldn't judge a book entirely by its cover, but a good one is sure hard not to pick up in the first place.

A month after the initial release, Pornophonique released a cover album that remixes 8-bit lagerfeuer... also very good and available here.

Konsumprodukt - Divorcio Robot

Rumbero Elegante is the name of a release that first appeared in May, 2009. Konsumprodukt is a project of of Spanish based Alejandro Remeseiro that consists of quite a few delicious little bites. A little lounge, a little techno and little just say what...I was torn as to what to post, but you should feel free to go to archives.org and check out the entire release.

"Rumbero elegante" is obviously influenced by the styles and rhythms of Alejandros home country in the first place, but he adds some wicked twists and turns that clearly show his special view on music.

The netlabel Laridae released this one and I can't wait to see what else they've been up to lately.

Jamendo.com is a fantastic source for free music covered by Creative Commons licenses. I need to make some time to get over to this Euro-resource, but BlocSonic has me covered for now. They released a compilation of ten artists that have posted their music at Jamendo this last May.

The compilation is called netBloc Vol. 21: opening your ears with jamendo.

BlocSonic has released over 20 compilations of net music with plans for two more coming in the next few months. They are doing great work and if you are looking for a mediated approach to collecting free music from the net this is a good starting point.

Two great sources in one post. Cool.

Wow. It has been a long time. Thanks to Subsystem for getting this started again.

When I decided to post something, the first thing that came to mind was Happy Elf...what is he up to these days? Well, WM Recordings has a release by the contented dutchman. Sex Machine was released in June and has this wonderful little tune.

More grooves, more lyrics and another guest vocalist: welcome to SEXMACHINE, a mini album filled with sounds of legendary synthesizers and dirty guitars.

The title track is not too shabby either, in fact, drop all five tunes into your hard drive for the complete experience.

There, that wasn't too hard.

Originally released in 2006, The Butcher's Ballroom was added to Jamendo late this July, and we are all very lucky for it. The artist, Diablo Swing Orchestra (DSO), formed in Sweden in 2003 and is described as avant-garde metal. You will see for yourself whether this is an apt description. There is certainly something for everyone's ears. Multiple languages, voices, and instruments.

The Butcher's Ballroom is very well produced, exciting to listen to, and takes you on an all-too-speedy tonal journey from start to finish. DSO will release another album September 21st, called "Sing Along Songs for the Damned and Delirious" -- I just pre-ordered my copy.

A tune from the Alexi Virta classic, Meets Tortsi at the Space Lounge. I haven't been around blogger to post recently so it is probably appropriate to go back to my netmusic roots to put up more Virta goodness.

This release is one of the most downloaded on archive.org and it is easy to see why. There hasn't been much in the way of follow-up from Alexi, but with this beauty out in the world we can be grateful.

A first I thought this was real, but I was talked down and now recognize it as ironic camp. I'm not sure when Bongolong posted this to archive.org, but the name of the release is A Bongolong Christmas 2004. (I'm pretty sure that it wasn't there before when I've put together past BSWChristmas shows).

Bongolong loves Christmas music!

The more interesting or weirder the better!! It's always been a dream to make my own Christmas music, taking those familiar melodies and giving them my own special twist.

Almost sounds like a mission statement for BSWChristmas.

This tune is from a 12rec compilation of reworked adcbicycle songs. adcBicycle is Matt Chisholm from Ottawa, Canada. According to the liner notes he apparently decided not to release a album's worth of material and asked friends to remix the stuff. The results are pretty cool.

This compilation was released on archive.org on September 11 this year. Lot's of great stuff. This is the tune that sat well with me.

BlocSonic is continuing to release their compilations of excellent net music. As we have mentioned in the past, the NetBloc releases are the complete package with art, music, variety and information. All for the downloading.

The most recent release is netBloc Volume 18 (frais, fresco, frisch, fresh… mmmmmmmmmmm… good).

When I want to sample the latest sweet sounding net releases, BlocSonic provides an excellent sampling. Including this number from Dub One on the iD.EOLOGY netlabel.

Yahoo Music Store Goes Away and Takes DRM'd Tunes With It

The excellent site, ReadWriteWeb is reporting that as the Yahoo Music Store exits the scene it will no longer support the Digital Rights Management (DRM) licensing that was embedded in tunes purchased from the service. This will serve as an excellent illustration of what DRM means in the marketplace. Technological obsolescence built into the digital file has significant implications on the longevity of that file.

ReadWriteWeb quotes an e-mail message from Yahoo! Music:

"Songs and albums that were purchased through the Yahoo! Music Unlimited Store are protected by a digital rights management system that requires a valid license key before they can be played on your computer.

After the Store closes, Yahoo! will no longer be able to support the retrieval of license keys for music purchased from Yahoo! Music Unlimited, and Yahoo! will no longer be able to authorize song playback on additional computers.

After September 30, 2008, you will not be able to transfer songs to unauthorized computers or re-license these songs after changing operating systems. Please note that your purchased tracks will generally continue to play on your existing authorized computers unless there is a change to the computer's operating system."

Consumers beware.

Oh, man is this a great track from ccMixter.org that was posted to the site on Friday.

Here at Camp BSWC, we are fond of our Sex and Space theme. This tune fits the bill on both accounts.

Starting with the very velvety guitar sample posted by Victor Fourstones, along with the luscious spoken words from Marika, aka essesq, Spinmeister pulls together an extremely sexy number that is so hot you might forget the summer humidity. At least I did. [Update 7/23/08: The preceding paragraph is in error. Marika is responsible for "imádlak" and essesq bringing the 'pella to the table. I regret the error.]

This selection should definitely be in consideration for the Wakka Chikka, Wakka Chikka, Porn Music for the Masses, vol. 3 (if one ever materializes).

Some bass, some drums, some jazz and some just so.

This is a fantastic track from a recent anniversary compilation released by the netlabel, 12rec.

The signature of this release is the mix of instrumentation and styles. A lot of organic sounds mixed in with the electronics.

This track is has a nice, building jazz push that is heavy on the piano, bass and drums. Really excellent.

Go to the release page and sample the wares...you are bound to find something you like.

Go with this one. It really develops into an amazing piece of electronic music.

Klipp is Hector Zarate and Jorge Soriano. This live track is from a Discos Konfort release called Ciudad de Mexico.

Discos Konfort is a netlabel devoted to Mexican electronic music. They have some marvelous releases. I was reviewing their catalog and stumbled on this live track. I've listened through it three times and decided it was time I shared.

Well, how about that, two posts on the same night. There is a lot of great music out on the net. Followers of BSWC will recognize our bias towards the mixters at ccMixter. One mixter has always intrigued us and his name is Cezary Ostrowski.

This is a mysterious piece...haunting and beautiful. Ostrowski is using the entrancing vocals of Shannon Hurley who has issued a call for remixes using a cappellas from her “Ready to Wake” album. His work here is brilliant.

The Dutch netlabel, On-Mix Productions just posted their 100th release and its a doozy. It is called VA-The best ON-Mix tracks according to Kodjax [onmp100]

They asked DJ Kodjax to pick the top 41 tracks from their previous 99 releases. I'm always up for a compilation so I put my ears to the metal.

I found a lot of variety, but with the unrelenting beat theme going on throughout. You will definitely have to pick and choose your favorites...everyone will have a different reaction. I have several that have really struck me and interestingly enough, they are new to me. I have some familiarity with On-Mix and Kodjax introduced me to some really outrageous stuff. Thanks.

There will probably be more from this release in the feed. Stay tuned.

Here is something new from the Foot side of the Bumpfoot netlabel. Bumpfoot is a netlabel based in Japan that has two sides. One is the Bump which features music that is more uptempo and beat oriented. The Foot side of the label is more laid back and relaxing. This is what we find with Jupiter Makes Me Scream.

The release is called Tuesday Morning Hurricane EP and was posted at archive.org on Sunday, July 6th.

It took me a couple listens to catch up with the beauty of these five tunes. I picked one to share, but I recommend listening to the complete release in order. They work with and compliment each other.

Tuesday Morning Hurricane EP was produced by Karolis Buržinskas. He is the Lithuanian behind Jupiter Makes Me Scream.
