It is very, very rare for a mom to need to stop breastfeeding for any illness. There are only a few very serious illnesses that might require a mom stop breastfeeding for a period of time or permanently. Per Dr. Ruth Lawrence, “HIV and HTLV-1 are the only infectious diseases that are considered absolute contraindications to breastfeeding in developed countries” (Lawrence & Lawrence 2001).

During any “ordinary” illness such as a cold, sore throat, flu, tummy bug, fever, mastitis, etc. you should continue to breastfeed. Just remind your doctor you are nursing so that if medications are needed he can prescribe something that is compatible with breastfeeding. Most medications are safe to take while breastfeeding, and for those that are not recommended there is almost always an alternative medication that is safe.

If mom has food poisoning, breastfeeding should continue. As long as the symptoms are confined to the gastrointestinal tract (vomiting, diarrhea, stomach cramps), breastfeeding should continue without interruption as there is no risk to the baby. This is the case with most occurrences of food poisoning. If the food poisoning progresses to septicemia, meaning the bacteria has passed into mom’s bloodstream (mom would most likely be hospitalized), see this guidance from Dr. Ruth Lawrence:

“Maternal infections of the genitourinary or gastrointestinal tract do not pose a risk to infants except in the rare circumstances when septicemia occurs and bacteria might reach the milk. Even in this event, continued breastfeeding while the mother receives appropriate antibiotic therapy that is compatible with breastfeeding is the safest course for the infant. If the infecting organism is especially virulent or contagious (e.g., an invasive group A streptococcal infection causing severe disease in the mother), breastfeeding should continue after a temporary suspension during the first 24 hours of maternal therapy. The best thing you can do for your baby when you’re sick is to continue to breastfeed. When you have a contagious illness such as a cold, flu, or other mild virus, your baby was exposed to the illness before you even knew you were sick. Your milk will not transmit your illness to baby, but it does have antibodies in it that are specific to your illness (plus anything else you or baby have been exposed to) – they’ll help prevent baby from getting sick, or if he does get sick, he’ll probably not be as sick as you.

Withholding your breastmilk during an illness increases
the possibility that baby will get sick, and deprives baby
of the comfort and superior nutrition of nursing.

You can also take measures to prevent baby from getting sick by doing the usual things to prevent the spread of illness: washing hands often, avoid sneezing/coughing on baby, limiting face-to-face contact, etc .

When you’re sick, it can help to just tuck baby into bed beside you and nurse lying down whenever baby gets hungry. If baby starts getting sick and not wanting to nurse, then see Baby refuses to nurse when sick.

Many times moms don’t nurse frequently enough and don’t get enough fluids to keep the milk supply going. Sometimes medications can cause your milk supply to diminish, as well. To avoid a decreased milk supply, drink plenty of fluids to avoid dehydration, continue to nurse often and avoid/limit any medications that tend to decrease milk.

You Probably Won't Get Your Period

Many moms enjoy an unexpected perk while exclusively breastfeeding: They don't menstruate.
"Prolactin, which is stimulated by suckling, can inhibit your cycle," says pediatrician Jack Newman, M.D., author of The Ultimate Breastfeeding Book of Answers (Three Rivers Press). "If mothers breastfeed exclusively for more than one year, they often won't get their periods for an average of 14 months."

Here's the rub: You can get pregnant again without having your period, so ask your doctor for an effective birth-control method that won't decrease your milk supply, such as condoms or the copper IUD. (Nursing moms should avoid estrogen-containing birth control.)

Nursing Can Make You Bolder

Breastfeeding moms are more likely to stand up for their babies' rights, according to a recent study from the University of California, Los Angeles, and the experience doesn't leave them feeling rattled. For example, defending your baby from a rude stranger could be considered stressful, but breastfeeding moms had significantly lower blood pressure readings than moms who bottle-fed their babies.

"Breastfeeding increases the body's threshold for stress, likely through oxytocin and prolactin levels, making moms more stress-resistant," says Jennifer Hahn-Holbrook, Ph.D., one of the study's authors.

Breasts Can Do Funny Things

At first, your breasts will become engorged, making you one to two (!) sizes bigger than usual. Then, when your baby eats from one side, that breast will look smaller and the other will still look gigantic. And between feeds, your breasts may even leak milk if you hear another baby's cry.

"The first few weeks are awkward and clumsy," says Laurie Beck, R.N., I.B.C.L.C., president of the Morrisville, N.C.-based U.S. Lactation Consultant Association. "You are learning. Your baby is learning. See some humor in it—it's messy, it's leaky, but it gets the job done."

Nursing Induces Sleep

You've probably heard that babies fall asleep while feeding, but did you know that sleep-deprived moms nod off, too?

"When the body releases the hormone oxytocin, it has a calming effect that allows nursing moms to relax," says Amy Spangler, R.N., I.B.C.L.C., president of babygooroo.com and author of

Breastfeeding: A Parent's Guide. "That's your body taking care of itself: Knowing the importance of sleep, the oxytocin effect is one more example of how breastfeeding protects the body."

Say Nope to Soap

Don't get too clean in the shower: Lathering breasts with soap can dry out your skin, which could lead to uncomfortable cracking of the nipples. "Just wash with warm water," says Marks.

You May Drink (with Precaution)

A little bit of drinking can be okay. But time your cocktail consumption carefully because your milk-alcohol level equals your blood-alcohol level, according to Philadelphia-based Monell Chemical Senses Center researcher Julie Mennella, Ph.D., who studies alcohol's effects on lactation.

"If you have a buzz, it's still in your milk," says Mennella, who recommends waiting at least three hours after your last sip of alcohol to breastfeed. If your baby needs a feeding within that three-hour time frame, use stored breast milk or formula. And to ensure your milk supply doesn't diminish, pump and dump: Pump at the scheduled feeding time and dump the alcohol-tainted milk down the drain.

You'll want to avoid alcohol if you're having problems building a milk supply, even though traditional wisdom suggests that beer helps produce breast milk. "Contrary to folklore, it disrupts the hormones of lactation," Mennella says. "Women who drink produce less milk."

There's No Need to Fear Teeth

Some nursing moms are afraid of being bitten, so they call it quits once baby's first tooth arrives. But babies can't bite when suckling. A curious baby may nip you after she's done eating, but if you pay attention to her cues, you can avoid being nibbled.

"If your baby does it once, take her off [the breast], and that negative reinforcement usually takes care of the problem," Beck says.

You Can Still Eat for Two (Kind Of)

Don't feel guilty for taking an extra helping at dinnertime; you need an additional 500 calories per day to help produce breast milk. For your baby's sake, make those calories count.
"Eat whole grains, fruits and vegetables as well as foods containing calcium," Beck says. Breast milk is rich in calcium, and if your diet is lacking in this important nutrient, your body will use your own calcium stores, which could leave you deficient.

"If you're not a milk drinker, get calcium in other foods, such as cheese, yogurt, spinach and other dark leafy greens as well as fortified cereal and orange juice," she says.

Your milk supply increases and decreases based on your baby's demand for nourishment, so frequent breastfeeding sessions help bolster a strong supply. This nifty feature of nursing also ensures that your baby will have enough to eat as her appetite increases.
Your baby can also jumpstart your milk let-down reflex; when your body recognizes cues, such as hearing your baby cry, it lets the milk flow. In fact, some working moms record their babies' I'm-getting-hungry cries to help them pump more efficiently at the office.
"The sound relaxes moms," Beck says. "Even seeing pictures of your baby helps moms unwind, and that milk will start flowing."

Introduction

Back in the golden age of film photography, there were plenty of brands from which you could choose some awesome cameras; this debate was a lot less prominent.

Since entering the age of digital photography, the two biggest players have been Canon and Nikon but the question is, as a beginner photographer about to buy one of them, which should you go for?

Before I go any further, I’m not saying that the other brands such as Sony, Samsung, Pentax etc. are no good – you can get just as good photos with them – it’s just that there is a lot more choice with Canon or Nikon.

Also, as a disclaimer, I should tell you that I shoot with a Canon, not that it really matters.

Compatibility Canon Vs. Nikon

One of the biggest reasons why Canon and Nikon are more popular than the other brands is their compatibility with much older equipment.

Canon’s EOS range goes back to 1987 and Nikon’s F mount range of lenses to 1959. This means that you can take any EOS or F lens and stick it on your camera – it’ll work just fine.

The main difference between the two is the autofocus; using Canon, all of the EOS lenses will autofocus whereas, using Nikon, only the AF-S lenses do. If you want your Nikon lens to autofocus (and you probably do), you need to choose an AF-S lens, narrowing your options slightly.

Nikon decided to remove the autofocus motor from their entry level cameras in an effort to keep them lightweight, compact and cheaper.

Currently, the Nikon D40, D40X, D60, D3000, D3100, D5000 and D5100 don’t include motors. Canon, on the other hand, have always had the autofocus motors in the lenses, not the bodies; this isn’t a problem for Canon users.

The lenses over the past 25 years are enough to keep most photographers satisfied but, if you know of any much older lenses that you simply must have on your camera, Nikon is the way to go.

I’ve recently upgraded some of my lenses to Canon’s L-Series and the jump in quality is extremely noticeable, not least in the autofocus.

They both use ultrasonic motors which are exceptionally fast and accurate, providing me with excellent results each time. Older lenses use older motors which are less reliable and don’t perform so well; if you’re looking to buy an old lens, make sure you test it out first.

If you’re aware of the crop factor, you may be interested to know that Canon’s sensors are actually a little bit smaller in their entry level bodies, giving more of a crop.

The crop factor is 1.6 rather than 1.5 so if you put a 50mm lens on a crop body, you’re going to be seeing the equivalent of 80mm, rather than 75mm. It’s not a huge difference but it may be something you want to consider if you buy a lot of full frame lenses.

Performance

You may think that this is the most influential factor for comparison but the overall performance of Canon and Nikon is so good that it would be ridiculous to generalise each manufacturer to try and decide which is best.

The best thing to do if you’re main interests lie in the performance of a camera is to compare key factors such as autofocus, noise, megapixels, photos per second and perhaps even weight.
There are areas where Canon stands out where Nikon doesn’t and visa versa.

For example, I really don’t like Canon’s auto white balance but I think their lenses are some of the best around. I think that the Nikon menu system is poorly set out but their cameras seem to handle noise very well.

It all comes down to which cameras are in your price range; Canon and Nikon are constantly in an effort to outdo one other.

Usability

In my opinion, one of the most important factors to consider when buying a new camera is the usability.

How does it feel in your hand? What’s it like to shoot with? How easily can you navigate the menu?

All of these questions are answered when you pick up a camera for the first time and, for me, they tend to outweigh all of the other reasons for buying a camera.

When I picked up my first Canon, it just felt right. You shouldn’t be swayed by the style of the little red detail on a Nikon, or the big grey lenses from Canon. You should see what works for you and stick with it.

It’s not often that people switch between brands but, when they do, it’s usually down to the usability because any good photographer knows that they can produce excellent results with basic gear.

Which Brand is Right for You

I encourage you to go into a camera shop with a budget and have look at the cameras in that price range.

Don’t look at the specs to begin with, just pick up a few cameras. See how easy they are to use and what sort of results they give.

My Canon has a really good screen so it’s much easier to review my images; some of my friends who shoot with Nikons have horrible screens in comparison. These small details add up to make a significant difference – let them influence your decision.

Your first camera purchase is really something that should be done in the shop, not online.
A lot of people who get into photography tend to do so because their friends have DSLR’s and they want to produce the same sorts of results.

Your friends will no doubt have at leasts some influence on your decision and try to convince you to buy the brand that they use, and it’s not actually a bad idea.

Buying the same brand camera as a friend means that you can share lenses and flashes; when you go out taking photos together, you end up having twice as much equipment at your disposal and you can lend things to each other all the time.

They will also be able to help you learn how to use your camera.

One of my close friends bought a Nikon and was asking me how to take some of the photos that I’d taken. Although I could tell him how I did it, I couldn’t walk him through it on his camera as I didn’t know how to use it.

Finally, think about what you eventually want to do with your camera and where you want it to take you.

A friend of mine owned a really good Nikon D300 but ended up selling all of his gear and buying Canon instead, all because he wanted to upgrade to full frame.

The price for a Nikon full frame DSLR (D700) was only a few hundred dollars more than the Canon (5D) but it was only 12 megapixels compared with Canon’s 21. The number of megapixels was important to the type of photos he planned to take; if he were to have stuck with Nikon, this would have cost him a lot more money.

When you’ve taken all the factors I’ve listed in this post into account, it’s clear that there’s no real winner, all it really comes down to is personal taste.

If you sign up with an account, Grammarly will store your data, offer personal analytics and allow you to sync the account wherever you access it. You’ll also be able to create a dictionary, which will tell the tool to stop counting certain words as misspellings.

18. Draft

Draft is a writing tool that tackles common problems when it comes to collaboration, such as new comments that override previous comments, the difficulty of finding previous versions of a draft, etc. Any edits made on Draft create their own copies so it preserves every change made by a team member.

But one of the most appealing things about the tool for freelancers is probably the “ask a professional” feature, which lets you ask for feedback or suggestions on your draft from a pool of its reviewers. If you’re not on a team, you may not have easy access to additional feedback and this gives you exactly that.

19. Hemingway App

Named after the one and only Ernest Hemingway, the Hemingway App is a tool that helps you to write better. It highlights complex sentences, difficult words, passive verbs and adverbs so you can change them into simpler writing. It also offers a readability score that lets you see how you’re doing.

21. BaseCamp

Freelancers are independent, but often work with their clients’ teams, which can make communication can be a major headache. BaseCamp is a project management tool that streamlines communication and projects so it’s easy to see who’s working on what, what needs to be done for which project, etc. You can also store all your files there, so everyone can have easy access to documents.

There’s so much information on the web that you want to save for later, but bookmarks just don’t cut it. Evernote is an excellent organization tool that clips pages into notebooks. Sort of like a better version of a to-do list, Trello is an app that helps you organize and brainstorm projects, either for yourself or for your team. Its intuitive drag and drop design makes it easy to create and move things around. It may seem deceptively simple at first but comes with more features than you might think.

24. Asana

A powerful project management tool, Asana looks great and is good for keeping you (or an entire team) on task. It functions by assigning tasks to people, projects or teams that you can refer to as a checklist. You can also organize them by calendar or board view.

It’s free for up to 15 team members, and is particularly suitable for people who like to look at to-do lists and enjoy checking things off as you go.

25. Dropbox

Cloud storage is commonplace these days, but Dropbox is still the top dog. Simplicity is its best feature. All you need to do to upload a file to the cloud is to place it in a Dropbox folder, so you never have to log in anywhere because everything is so well-synced up.

If you’re on the free plan, you get 2GB of storage to store your most important files. But you can also earn more space by referring friends, or simply completing the “getting started” guide.

26. Pocket

True to its name, Pocket is a tool that saves what you want to read for later in your “pocket.” This includes articles you really want to read but don’t have time for right away, or videos you want to watch later.

The best part is that once you save something, it’s available on any one of your devices offline. It works best on your desktop through the browser extension, but you can also save from mobile by sending the link as an email to add@getpocket.com. It’s completely free to use, though there’s a premium plan as well.

27. Feedly

Feedly is a useful tool for the voracious reader. It’s basically your personal feed for all content, so you don’t have to browse individual websites for stuff you want to read. You can add whatever blog or publication to the feed and it will automatically pull from those sites. The UI is clean and simple, so you can read without distraction.

Use the browse feature to find more sources to your liking. You can also share your feed with others, which is especially handy if you want a team reading list.

28. TickTick

TickTick is a no-frills to-do list app. If all you want is an effective to-do app and you don’t need any fancy features, it’s a great place to start. It’s free to use and the design is simple and intuitive. You can also tag team members and share your list.

The “next 7 days” view is fantastic for planning for the week ahead. But to get more functions like calendar view and smart lists, you’ll need to upgrade.

29. Todoist

Todoist is another great app to manage your to-do list. It’s full-featured and has useful integrations with Google Calendar and Zapier. The distraction-free design helps you focus, and you can color code tasks according to priority or projects. Things You Need to Know before Breast Pumping

Once you’re ready to start breast pumping, there are a few things you need to know. If you have a full-term, healthy, breastfeeding baby, you can wait a few weeks to start pumping and storing breast milk. If your baby is preterm or ill and cannot breastfeed yet, or if you have chosen to exclusively pump, pump as soon as you can after birth, preferably within one to six hours of delivery.
If you’re primarily breastfeeding:

Pump in the morning. Many moms get the most milk first thing in the morning.

Plug in your pump or make sure it has working batteries.
Wash your hands with soap and water.
Assemble the pump kit.
Center the flanges over your breast(s) and center the nipple in the flange opening, making an air seal. Flange fit is important!
If you’re double pumping, cup each flange to the breast with fingers below the flange and thumb on the top. When adjusting your dials, switch to using one arm across both breasts, keeping an airtight seal.
Turn your pump on.
Similar to a baby nursing at the breast, start out with high speed and low suction until you see milk flow (let-down), then adjust speed to medium and increase suction based on comfort level.
Once milk flow decreases, increase speed to high until the next let-down, then decrease to medium speed.

How Much to Pump

How much milk you should expect to pump will vary depending on factors such as your baby’s age, time since last feeding or pumping, time of day, pump type, how much practice you’ve had with your pump, and whether you’re relaxed or stressed.
If you’re primarily breastfeeding, on average, you can expect:

More milk production in the morning hours .
Volumes gradually decreasing during the day into the evening.
Breast milk volumes are dependent on many variables and each breast may produce different volumes.

If you’re exclusively pumping, on average, you should try maintain full milk production of about 25-35 oz. (750-1,035 mL) per 24 hours. It may take some time to achieve this target, do not worry about hitting this on day one!
Babies may take more milk from the bottle than when breastfeeding. The faster, steadier flow of the bottle causes some babies to take more than they need. A slow-flow bottle may help prevent overfeeding.

How to Reach and Maintain Full Milk Production

If you’re pumping because your baby is preterm or too sick to breastfeed, or because you have chosen to exclusively pump, follow these tips to reach and maintain full milk production. Pumping often to drain the breast completely sends a signal to the body to produce more milk. The more often you drain your breasts the more milk they will make.
From Birth to Day 4

If you can, start pumping within six hours after birth.
Use a multi-user pump to initiate and maintain milk supply.
Expect to pump just a little colostrum (the first milk) at first.
As soon as possible, pump 8-10 times every 24 hours. This is how many times each day your baby would typically feed from the breast. In most cases, the more times each day you pump, the more milk you make. The reverse is true, too. Pumping fewer times will produce less milk.
Double pump (pump both breasts at once); this saves time and may boost production more quickly.
Pump at least 10-20 minutes, until your milk comes in on Day 3 or 4. Then, hand express any remaining milk. Remove and place the breast flange under your breast to collect the milk you hand express. (The hand expression helps to better drain your breast, and drained breasts make milk faster.)
To help establish milk supply, pump at least twice between 1 to 6am. In early morning hours milk- making hormone levels increase and taking advantage of this will increase your milk production.

From Day 4 to Full Production
When your milk increases from drops to ounces on about day 4, make these changes:

Pump longer, two minutes after the last drop of milk or until your breasts are softened/no longer feel full.
Focus on the total number of pumpings each day (8-10 times per 24 hours) rather than the time between pumpings (every 2-3 hours).
Don’t allow more than one five-hour period to pass without pumping during your baby’s first two weeks of life.

Many moms find it easier to focus on their daily total rather than pumping at a set time each day. This daily total also seems to be most important to your milk production.
Maintaining Full Milk Production
When you reach 25-35 oz. (750-1,050 mL) per baby per 24 hour period, you’ve met your goal. Most moms can then pump fewer times each day and maintain production. At this stage:

Maintain a schedule that continues producing approximately 25-35oz of breastmilk in a 24 hour period.
While maintaining your optimal production of milk, you can try and sleep more. Once full production is developed, many moms pump right before bed and first thing in the morning. See if you can do this without too much breast fullness or a decrease in milk production.
Pump for a shorter period of time. For many moms, 10-15 minutes of pumping is long enough.
Once a week, add up the milk you pump in a 24-hour period. Write it down and compare your totals each week. You’ll know right away if your production drops.

Increasing Milk Production
If you need to boost milk production, the sooner you work on it, the faster you’ll see results. Some ideas to try are:

Pump more. 8-12 pumpings per a 24 hour period boosts milk production for most moms.
Pump longer, two minutes after the last drop of milk or until your breasts are softened/no longer feel full
Check your breast flange fit; it can change with time.
Use breast massage before or during pumping.
Hand express after pumping.
Ask your lactation consultant or healthcare provider for additional information on increasing milk supply.

Weaning From the Pump
When you decide to wean from the pump, remember the safest and most comfortable weaning is almost always a gradual one. There are a couple of ways to wean from the pump:

Drop one daily pumping. Give your body two to three days to adjust. Then drop another daily pumping. Leave your first and last daily pumpings until the end. Repeat until you’re fully weaned from the pump.
Keep the number of pumpings the same but pump for a shorter period of time. For example, if you were getting 4 oz. (120 mL) at each pumping, stop after 3 oz. (90 mL). Give your body two to three days to adjust and then do it again. Repeat until you no longer feel the need to pump.

While weaning, if your breasts ever feel full, pump just long enough to make yourself comfortable. Letting your breasts stay too full puts you at risk for pain and infection.
