The Art Market YORK - RAW Graduates

At The Art Market we LOVE going to see all of the end of year art shows and exhibitions at universities and colleges. The fresh, exciting, unhindered flow of creativity is fantastic to see and immerse yourself in.

I often think that I would love to go back to that time; when ideas and processes were free to flow and change with no pressures from the realities of 'the real world'. Having said that, it is also a very daunting time when you leave the safety of your college or university surroundings and begin on your adventure into a creative career alone.

Henrietta Mapplebeck - Wearable Art - RAW Graduate 2015

Gone are the tutors to guide you, gone are the endless materials and tools to test and use, gone are the structured projects. All of a sudden you are having to find a studio space (more often than not it is your mums kitchen table!) tools have to be bought, materials sourced, business plans put in place, websites set up and exhibitions to be booked. Phew!!

At The Art Market we have always prided ourselves on offering help and guidance to two or three 'Newcomers' who are taking part in The Art Market as their first retail show. This has always been very successful and is so rewarding to see a newly emerging artist blossom in front of us.

For The Art Market YORK we are expanding on this idea to offer 12 recent graduates the chance to take part in their first retail show at York Racecourse in October.

Artist studios are fascinating places, seeing artists at work is amazing and inspiring and that is why we are bringing the feeling and excitement of that to The Art Market YORK.

You’ll be able to come along and meet the makers, see live demonstrations on the Living Plinth, hear artists talk about their work and inspiration plus help create a piece of work with the People’s Painting.

We are busy here at The Art Market – the York show is just 6 weeks away and with over 80 artists taking part plus installation artists, musicians and recent graduates it is a really exciting time... but hectic!

Emily worked on our new promotional card today (above) and Brendan has been thinking about his Live Sculpture work for the Living Plinth.

Our first promotional video went live yesterday.

We are all working on the floor plan, the catalogue, pulling all the different elements together and much more.... plus drinking lots of tea.

Jim Stringer

Jim Stringer graduated from Sheffield Polytechnic in 1989 with a degree in Three Dimensional Design, specialising in metalwork and jewellery and has worked in the metal industry, in Sheffield, for 25 years.

"I initially worked in education and with a friend producing public art and bespoke sculptural pieces. Over the past few years I have entered my designs in an international pewter competition called Pewter Live which is run by The Worshipful Company of Pewterers. I took runner up prize in 2013 for my mad hatters teapot." (see above image).

"I won first prize in 2014 for a range of

jewellery and homewares called "Hook,

Line & Sinker."

"I started my own business in October 2014 and took on a workshop in Sheffield. I have developed the range of designs for retail and am currently designing and making new pieces. The latest quirky range is called "Dogeared"and is designed with dog lovers in mind."

We think that Jim is a real talent - skills and ideas coming together to create unique homewares and jewellery. Come along and meet Jim Stringer at The Art Market HOLMFIRTH tomorrow Sunday 14th June 10am - 4pm.

Jess Mahy - dancer to doodler - unique illustrations of life, thoughts and observations...

Jess Mahy

Jess Mahy is new to The Art Market. And we think she is one to watch. Her illustrations and ‘doodles’ as she refers to them, have a lovely unique way of communicating her interests, observations and notions of life.

They might be doodles to Jess – but to us we think that she is an illustrator of talent and we are delighted that she is taking part in The Art Market.

This is the first time that Jess has exhibited and sold her work independently and we hope you’ll come and see her work and talk to her about her inspirations.

"I have always been interested in art and textiles. Being a part of a creative family the arts has always been an influential part of growing up!"

"After completing a degree in Contemporary Dance, at The Northern School of Contemporary Dance, I started doodling again."

"I now have a studio space at Bar Lane Studios which is situated in the centre of York and It is here that all my doodles are made. Under my company name J.a.R I specialise in producing original illustrations; limited edition Giclee prints and stationery. I also take on commission work which ranges from original illustrative art to bespoke wedding stationery."

Come along and meet Jess, talk to her about her ideas, about how she moved from contemporary dance into illustration and how each one influences the other, or not.

Janet Browne

Janet Browne is a textile artist who has been making wall mounted maps, plans and related work for more than ten years.

Janet describes her influences, her making processes and the success she's having in her career:

"I am influenced by folk art, early embroidery and naive painters. The work has a graphic, story telling element and depicts a very personal view of the landscape."

"I take inspiration from the Yorkshire landscape, gardens and allotments. Whilst many of the pieces are maps of journeys made, others are snapshots of interesting objects, birds or animals i have observed whilst making those journeys."

"I construct all my work from hand dyed cottons,

quilters wadding and a variety of stitch.

Each piece is unique."

"In 2013 I was awarded the Craft and Design magazine Gold award and also the Editors Choice prize by the Country Living Magazine. My work has been featured in The Dalesman in July 2014, Craft and Design Magazine 2013 and several embroidery publications."

James Sharp - Artist, Travel, Garden, Art Deco, Goth, Steampunk, Alice, Frida and Vintage themed journals and more

James Sharp

James Sharp is a textile artist working in the High Peak, UK and he has developed a technique for printing on fabric and then using the printed material to create textile collages. These are appliqued to a range of products including shoulder, ipad and laptop bags, art aprons etc. Here he talks about his work, the things he creates and the themes he follows:

"I work extensively in Art Journals which are made from recycled materials and have fabric covered bindings decorated with textile collage. The insides have signatures made from recycled envelopes which are embellished on a variety of themes including Artist, Garden, Travel, Frida, Art Deco, Alfons Mucha, Alice, Clarice Cliff, Ladies, Weird, Goth and Steampunk. There are also place specific journals for the High Peak, Chorlton, Manchester, Bollington, Bakewell, Sheffield, Macclesfield, Brighton, Paris, New York, Chicago and others."

"I produce books with slip covers made from recycled materials which can be used for writing in, making notes, drawing and jotting down ideas. I also have Address Books and Diaries in my range. Books with recycled upholstery leather covers and a series of books with denim pockets on the covers for storing pencils and other writing paraphernalia are also part of my range."

"My Art Aprons have hand printed writing on the front and come in slimline as well as one size fits all versions. The larger sizes feature a large pocket. All of the aprons are fully lined and have adjustable neck straps."

James Oughtibridge - large scale ceramic vessels create a world of contorted shadows...

James Oughtibridge

James Oughtibridge creates large scale ceramic vessels from a group studio in Holmfirth called Sculpture Lounge Studio's which houses a number of different artists. James exhibits his work in prestigious shows such as Ceramic Art London and Art in Action (see image below). Here he tells us about how he started out and the way his most recent works came into being:

"I was first drawn to clay back in 1995 on an Art Foundation course under the guidance of raku Artist David Roberts. I was immediately struck by the way it could be turned into almost anything. After this exciting introduction to the material I gained a place at Loughborough University and began developing a range of making processes. The physicality of the making and the challenge to work on a large scale has always been at the forefront of my work."

"After graduating with a first I went on to study an MA at the Royal College of Art, where, from the offset, I was challenged and pushed to move away from the refined, monumental sculptural forms I had made on my degree. It was time to push and try new things and after over a year of experimentation, I developed a range of outdoor sculptural seating. Although this body of work proved popular with numerous sales, commissions and television work I felt it was time to start exploring the vessel again and return to slab building which had always been a passion."

"My work is constructed with numerous planes and perspectives, allowing the onlooker to look inside to a world of contorted shadows. Sculptures often appear to float, with no visible flat base.

This creates a tension with the work and its surroundings. The structures, initially overpowering, hold delicate and enticing surfaces."

"The many hours I spend refining, scraping and sanding the clay creates the gentle flowing curves. The dark and light granulated surfaces create imposing shadows that invite a closer inspection."

"I moved back to Yorkshire from London in 2005 to set up a studio. I was awarded an Arts Council Grant in 2010, which enabled me to develop my work in an ambitious way, in particular taking my sculptural vessels forward in terms of scale. My work is currently on permanent exhibition at The Contemporary Ceramics Gallery in London and is purchased by private collectors and interior designers."

Choosing a piece of jewellery is very personal and takes a great deal of time and thought. If you are looking for a unique gift, or maybe treating yourself to something special, Jacqueline Warrington is happy for you to make an appointment, meet her, visit her workshop and see the work properly and where it is made. However, this coming Sunday she is making life really easy for The Art Market visitors and bringing her newest collection of jewellery to the show.

"I started training as a jeweller at the age of sixteen, first working for a renowned jewellery designer, going on to college and finally attending Sheffield School of Art to study silversmithing as well as jewellery. After leaving Sheffield in 1984, I set up in business designing and making my own range of jewellery."

"I am quite passionate about working with precious metals and stones. To watch a piece develop as the form and shape change during the making process is both fascinating and exciting."

New to The Art Market Jacqueline specializes in wedding and engagement rings and unique silverware.

"My jewellery is original and well made with a great deal of thought and care. All my jewellery and silversmithing pieces are hand made therefore no two pieces are the same."

Home Front Vintage - making original 'escape & evasion' silk maps into accessories...

Home Front Vintage is the brain child of Sara Jane Murray. Home Front Vintage remakes genuine damaged silk ‘escape and evasion’ maps into covetable gifts and accessories for people who value British heritage and provenance with a contemporary twist.

"Escape maps were the creation of Clayton Hutton, an eccentric MI9 British Army Officer during WW2. Hutton had maps printed onto silk as it doesn’t degrade in water and also doesn’t rustle like paper. The maps were issued to the military throughout WW2 and beyond; with troops hiding the maps inside the lining of their uniform or hollowing out the heel of their boot and hiding the map there. If they were captured or shot down, they then had a map so they could try to escape and find their way home."

"Over the years, all this accumulated stuff had to compete for space in a small Victorian cottage with two large dogs and Mr Austerity who, although rather lovely, was starting to tut as yet another 1930s enamel biscuit tin in the shape of a globe obscured his view of Newsnight. In order to restore marital harmony, I started selling at a vintage fair in Kent.

Unfortunately, this was not the happy ending of an uninterrupted view of Jeremy Paxman that Mr Austerity had dreamt of. One danger of selling at vintage fairs is that your eye is often drawn to the myriad of interesting items on sale, and it was at such an event that I came across what I thought was a damaged silk scarf depicting a map."

"The more I learnt about this fascinating tale, the more I wanted to share it. Further research revealed that some army regiments and ex-military personnel still had stocks that were either damaged or simply unwanted. I started to collect as many as I could, with no real plan of what I might do with them (the irony of which was not lost on Mr Austerity when I arrived home with three boxes containing over 1,000 of these maps). And so Home Front Vintage was born."

"We now remake the damaged maps into gifts and accessories for people who value British heritage and provenance. Each item we make comes with information on the history and provenance of the maps, preserving the integrity of the maps and ensuring the story survives."

Hazel McNab - printmaking inspired by dancing animals and a heart a day....

Hazel McNab was born and grew up in Holmfirth. She lives in Shropshire.

"I am really looking forward to visiting in June for The Art Market. A printed textile designer, I am currently having fun with lino cut printing. Combining my two passions of dancing and animals I've produced a series of whimsical prints."

"A collection of lino cut prints to make your wall smile. ‘Dancing Animals’ a whimsical combination of my two great loves, dancing and animals. My lino cuts are hand printed on A3 300gm watercolour paper. The images are about 20 by 28cm. No two are exactly the same, as there is always a tiny degree of variation down to the ink and pressure to print."

Hazel began painting a heart a day on 14th February 2012 for a year, but it didn't stop.

"Call it a midlife crisis if you like, but one day everything changed and a new chapter in my life began. I set myself the challenge to paint a heart a day for a year, and started on this creative journey. I shared the hearts with whoever might enjoy them, through my blog. I made the first heart on Valentine’s Day 2012, so a leap year led to the name 366Hearts. But when the 366th heart was done, I was having too much fun to stop. Now I’ve taken the project on to 1000 hearts…and it’s not stopping there."

"I usually create each new heart at night. I stop and think for a moment about what I want to tell myself. What do I need? Advice, happy energy, some strength, an insight, a pat on the back, a kick up the backside…? From the thought in my head, I paint my heart, then write a few of my own words or find a quote that seems to fit with the heart. Each heart is personal to me, yet seems to work on so many different levels, for so many people. There’s always someone out there who relates to the day’s heart. Your reactions to the hearts generate fresh inspiration for the 366Hearts Project."

Flossie Limejuice - quirky, characterful folk art dolls & animals....

Shelagh Pickford is the designer / maker behind Flossie Limejuice. She is based in West Yorkshire and works from home creating her original Folk Art Dolls. One of the most popular artists at The Art Market, Flossie Limejuice pieces are always quick to go – so get there early on Sunday 14^th June to see her newest work.

"I originally studied graphic design but have always had a passion for folk art, fabric, paint and papier maché."

"Inspiration for my work comes from everywhere - childhood memories, books, conversations - the list could go on and consequently each doll, if they could speak, would tell you a story."

"I usually start a design with a series of rough sketches which evolve as the constraints of working with fabric tempers the design - once I am happy, I then draught a pattern and away I go! My designs have a limited run - before I have finished one doll, more ideas are popping into my head and are raring to be made!"

Fiona Jubb - felt works inspired by the sea....

Fiona Jubb

After completing a foundation course in Art & Design, Fiona Jubb went on to achieve a BA Hons in Graphic Design which essentially led her career, including, running an advertising and marketing company for over 15 years. However, since moving to Buxton to live somewhere more 'aesthetically pleasing' she has rediscovered her experimental side, revisiting both drawing and painting.

"Combining the ancient craft of wet felting with other media, I create both two dimensional and three dimensional contemporary abstract work. My felted cocoons are heartfelt. Creating a warm, reassuring, nurturing space. They plead to be touched ...held. They are comforting, yet show great strength. They represent a safe haven from the madness of the frantic world."

"The process of creating cocoons is, in itself, both soothing and calming. The natural fibres themselves often dictate many of the final shapes. No one piece is ever alike.

I am also greatly influenced by the sea. ts power. Its beauty. Its colours. And what lives within it. Shells, limpets, anemones. Cocoons in their own way."

"The Peak District landscape is now a significant inspiration for me. For example ‘Lichen on a drystone wall’ was chosen for the Derbyshire Open Art Exhibition 2014."

"I also have a range of ‘art cards’ - greeting cards that are individual small felted pieces ideal for framing. Plus a range of beautiful felted scarves. Stylish, comfortably light yet really warm. All the pieces are unusual and striking and fit perfectly into the contemporary home. They range in price from £3.50 to £350."

Elaine Thélier - every day objects drawn with love...

Elaine Thélier

Elaine Thélier was born in Yorkshire and settled in the Holme Valley for the past 15 years. This is the first time though that Elaine will have taken part in The Art Market - although she's been a regular visitor and so this Sunday she'll experience a different side of the show just metres away from her home.

"I love observing and drawing the lines, contours and small details of natural forms and everyday objects around me. I find drawing totally absorbing, almost meditative and I can so easily lose myself in the shapes and the activity."

"My aim is to represent the sculptural, architectural and ephemeral qualities I feel when I see something exciting, stimulating or whatever interests me in the moment - a row of beans, grasses waving in the breeze, ripening seed heads, sliced oranges, old worn cutlery."

"I use a variety of transparent papers on which to draw and I play around with the images and layer these on a range of colours. I like to re-size, repeat and create screen prints in a design format to be used on posters, journals, notebooks and cards."

"I studied art and educations at Bath Spa University College where I developed an interest in pen and ink drawing. I have lived and worked in Bath and France and throughout my life combined family life with teaching, community activity, outdoor therapy and art work."

Diane Jones - Devore - etching velvet to create unique and beautiful scarves...

Diane Jones

Diane Jones Textiles creates unique, hand-painted devore velvet scarves in a wide variety of beautiful patterns derived from the natural world. Her stylish scarves are available in a dazzling array of colours ranging from subdued pastel shades through to gem-like colours that shimmer in the light.

“My designs range from songbirds and butterflies, flowers and foliage to Aboriginal designs and subtle stripes and spots. My scarves can enhance many outfits, and are versatile enough to wear in any season, making them fabulous gifts.”

Diane is based at South Square, Thorton in Bradford where she has a studio. She largely works with printed textiles using Monoprint and Devoré techniques to create one-off fabrics from which she makes scarves, wraps, and framed pieces, latterly using machine embroidery to further embellish.

"My designs reflect my fascination with colour, pattern, light, rhythms and silhouettes found in the natural environment and I enjoy the layering and depth that experimenting with Devoré, which is etched velvet, can demonstrate."

Diane received a Degree in Art and Design from Bradford College of Art in 1987. Since then she has worked as a freelance designer/ maker, selling her work through craft shops/galleries throughout the country. She has also co-owned a craft and design shop, worked as an Artist in residence at a school for several years and run textile printing workshops in secondary schools and for adult groups.

Deiniol Williams - earthenware tiles inspired by medieval designs...

Deiniol Williams

Deniol Williams was originally based in Mid-Wales where he produced wood-fired stoneware, he is now making earthenware tiles in Glossop, a small town on the edge of the Peak District. This significant change of direction was dictated partly by circumstance, but also by curiosity. This new body of work takes inspiration from original medieval tile designs, and also the architecture and geometry of the great medieval abbeys and churches of the time giving Deiniols work a sense of history.

Deiniol spends most of his time screen printing designs directly onto hand-made clay tiles, and also designing new geometric patterns. However, once a year, he takes a selection of pots down to Wales to fire in the wood-firing kiln.

"My designs are inspired by the original tiles which adorned the floors of abbeys and large houses across the UK from around the 13th to the 16th century."

"Repeating patterns were very important in medieval tile work along with the sacred geometry found within the architectural construct of the abbeys. Geometry had a strong religious meaning as well as being a vital part in the building of Abbeys due to their vast scale and no other means of measuring accurately."

Deiniol's tiles utilise the modern technique of screen-printing where a coloured clay is printed onto a contrasting tile. They are finished with safe but traditional earthenware glazes.

"My tiles are fired to earthenware temperatures to produce the warm terracotta look and feel of traditional medieval tiles.

Due to tiles being fired to earthenware temperatures, they are more suited to kitchen walls or areas of low-footfall such as around fireplaces."

David Howey - creating unique lamps from domestic and industrial items - art, recycling and lighting come together....

David Howey

David Howey is a North East based artist whose work is inspired by recycling the weird and wonderful items he finds on his travels. He is definitely one of the most popular artists at The Art Market and one of those whose brilliance in making and craftsmanship means that customers flock to his stand first thing as we open to see what he's created this time!

His lighting collection to date includes things such as vintage radios,cameras, hairdryers, toasters, 60's soda syphons, and a 1930's carpet sweeper which made a fantastic standard lamp.

"Creativity has always been important for me, having owned a successful picture framing and restoration business for over 35 years I then 'retired' and now make lighting." says David

"I love spending time sourcing inspiration for new forms of lighting, visiting many fairs and shows to find the perfect pieces. No two pieces are the same, and I pride myself on originality and being able to test myself with new ideas."

David works on individual pieces and private commissions.

We are delighted that David Howey will be joining us on Sunday 14th June at The Art Market HOLMFIRTH & on Friday 2nd, Saturday 3rd & Sunday 4th October at The Art Market YORK.

Catherine Woodall - jewellery created from semi precious stones, silver & gold and inspired by the windswept Pennines...

"All my jewellery is handmade in my workshop atop the - often - windswept Pennines. Surrounded as I am by Emily Bronte's 'high waving heather' and green wooded valleys, it is little wonder my work is inspired by nature." says Catherine Woodall.

Catherine has taken part in The Art Market HOLMFIRTH a number of times over the past few years and is a firm favourite amongst our customers because of the delicate beauty of each of her pieces of work.

"My father was an engineer and as I seemed to have inherited his mathematical, technical brain, it seemed natural to me to follow in his footsteps and study engineering. But I also loved the Arts and creating and it took a good few years and several different jobs for me to realise that was a big part of who I was too. I initially took classes in ceramics, which I still love, but once I tried jewellery making something just clicked. It was the perfect combination for me. I love the making and I love the designing. I even love the small and the fiddly and discovered a wealth of patience which really was not apparent in the other areas of my life."

"The veins of a leaf and the rain or a dewdrop glistening on it are some of the details I've drawn down. For my leaf texture work every piece is impressed with a real skeleton leaf and therefore every piece is unique."

"I work in silver and semi-precious stones and have recently been introducing a few gold pieces into the collections. I am inspired by the Arts and Crafts movement in both Britain and Vienna at the turn of the last century. "

"I consider myself fortunate that I work doing what I love and I hope my jewellery reflects this."

Catherine Higham

Catherine Higham creates abstract and observational works rooted in earth, light and weather. Current drawings, paintings and prints explore methods of making marks and surface; recording process and time; and offering space for contemplation.

Catherine is taking part in The Art Market HOLMFIRTH for the first time on Sunday 14th June and here she explains more about her and her work....

"Abstract and observational works exploring the

balance and tension created by intentional &

serendipitous lines, tones, surface and space.

Drawing to record time; to observe (perceive);

and as (meditative) process."

"I was born in Sheffield and currently live in the Loxley valley. My formal training includes a Fine Art degree at Bath School of Art & Design and a Masters in Landscape Design at the University of Sheffield."

"I combine a career working as a Landscape Architect with the pursuit of my own artwork practice. Other activities include a tutoring role at the University of Sheffield's Landscape Department, focusing on art-based approaches to landscape architecture."

"Drawing is a medium I love and it is fundamental to my work. Drawn marks are used within my paintings and prints, as a tool for developing ideas and sketching on site, and of course as a medium in its own right."

"Although each piece derives from a specific place, journey or experience, the artwork aims to provoke an emotional response in the viewer; to draw them into the surface of the work and encourage individual interpretation....a microscopic sample of earth, an aerial view?"

"My artwork also explores the following threads: ...mapping, marks, traces, memory, transience, light, shadow, passage of time, seasons, the sublime, distillation/essence of a place, change, constancy, cycles, layers, erosion, erasure, weathering, renewing, recurring, familiar landscapes, new/alien landscapes, imaginary places, micro - macro scales, glimpses, blocked - channeled views, expansive vistas, lines, edges..."

Bloomfield & Rolfe - a collaboration to create bespoke rubber stamps, art jigsaws, baubles & more...

Bloomfield & Rolfe

Bloomfield & Rolfe is the collaborative project of Jenny Bloomfield and Holly-Anne Rolfe, who met at Leeds University in 1998, and who share a love of books, stationery and the textures of beautiful objects and the handmade.

Jenny & Holly-Anne create rubber stamps which are an art work in themselves. Here they tell us about there work, there new creation of jigsaws and baubles intended also to be unique art pieces in there own right.

"Our business has traditionally been focused on rubber stamps, all of which are hand-drawn and customised with individual details for each customer.

Designs draw inspiration from 19^th century woodcuts, art nouveau, art deco, mid-century textiles and all manner of old books."

"We have successful ranges of ex libris, address, Christmas, house portrait, wedding and kids stamps. In addition to our pre-existing designs we have completed hundreds of commissions for entirely bespoke stamps."

"In 2015 we are excited to be launching a range of personalised and limited edition wooden jigsaw puzzles featuring our designs. These will not only be a toy for children (and adults), but each will double as a frameable and original work of art."

"In addition to our main product lines we also create hand-stamped and finished pictures, cards, badges and wrap. We love to experiment by stamping on leather, wood and cork to make covetable objects. We are rolling out our die-cut bauble cards this year in a variety of guises in a bid to create greetings that are little pieces of art and will be kept and treasured."

Interestingly Holly-Anne has another creative side line, she launched ‘Holly’s Houses’ in 2010 and has since drawn over 1500 house portraits for some spectacular properties!

Astrid Weigel is passionate about her homeware and wall art collection. Each item has been designed, printed and sewn by her with her aim to "create stylish, original and slightly quirky home accessories which stand out from those seen in every High Street in the UK". And we think she does that!

"I am a textile designer/maker working from my Ayrshire home in Scotland. I returned to my first love of printing and designing fabric after having taken a long career break from working in the furnishing fabrics sector. I produce a collection of home decorative accessories, ranging from cushions, table runners, wall art as well as smaller items."

"Using a monochromatic colour palette, I hand print my designs and embellish this fabric by using several techniques such as machine embroidery, hand stitching and applique using remnants of vintage/pre-owned fabrics which I have collected over the years."

"My work reflects my interest in nature, gardening, sewing, crafting and the bold graphic style of mid 20th century art and design."

Alx Creations - using glass as an art form to evoke & hold memories and moments...

Alx Creations

Alex Blakey trained in Three Dimensional Design, at Manchester Metropolitan University and developed a passion for glass. From there she went to London to learn more about the industrial glass industry first hand and became inspired to become a glass artist.

Moving to Slaithwaite, Huddersfield she set up AlxCreations and is exhibiting at The Art Market on Sunday 14th June for the first time with us.

History lies around us,

Memories lie within us,

Both are moments in time,

Some are ephemeral; some are carved in our souls.

Alex is inspired by memories and the collection of memories and moments...

"Memories are something we all carry with us. If we can collect a million brilliant memories in out lifetime then we are richer than any amount of money can make us."

"At Alx Creations I capture these memories in beautiful handcrafted glass. All of my work is inspired by memories and history. I believe in capturing moments in time and the thoughts and feelings that accompany them." said Alex

"My work not only focuses on personal memories but also memories from places and moments in history. So much of this can so easily be lost over time. Our heritage is important so I aim to preserve it."

Anna Tosney

Anna Tosney studied both printmaking and ceramics - but here at The Art Market we know which art form won out for Anna.

Anna Tosney has exhibited with us at The Art Market quite a few times now and is always popular with our visitors with her drypoint/monoprint printmaking skills. Born and bred in Skipton, Yorkshire, Anna's inspiration is the landscape, people and animals she sees around her. My guess is that Anna spends lots of time in her wellies wandering the Dales and the Moors of her native Yorkshire.

"In my artwork I distill the essence of the subject into a bold, simple form that still retains the atmosphere of the scene I'm portraying. I love absorbing my surroundings, paying particular attention to colour and shape."

I'm inspired by beautiful skies, sheep, fields, and (often slightly humorous) scenes I come across in day-to-day life."

"The Yorkshire Dales has always been very influential. I love to watch the sheep, farmers, dry-stone-wallers etc. in their natural environment, so spend many hours out in the countryside. There is also something special about the local landscape and weather, which plays a great role in my work."

"I start with many hours of observation, backed up with sketches and photographs."

"These ideas are later adapted and developed into an image to be scratched onto my printmaking plate."

"After printing this image to create the bold black outlines in my work, the plate is then inked up again, possibly two or three times, with carefully mixed transparent layers of colour."

"Various wiping techniques are used on each layer to give depth and texture to my work. Each piece I produce is an individual and unique work of art."
