'K-Fashion Archive: 0 to 100' is an interview project bridging the lineage between first-generation masters (100) who laid the foundation of Korean fashion and the vibrant emerging talents (0) capturing global attention today. Through the lens of a stylist who feels the pulse of fabric on the field, this project aims to record the true essence of Korean fashion and the humanistic narratives of its designers. We now open the first chapter of this grand journey.

The Living Myth of Korean Fashion History, A Master of "Firsts"

장광효(Kwang Hyo Chang) is a name that cannot be omitted from the history of Korean fashion. Since founding his brand 'CARUSO' in 1987, he became the first Korean male designer to enter the Paris Prêt-à-Porter, pioneering the globalization of K-fashion. Guided by the philosophy that "there are no taboos in menswear," he was a revolutionary who practiced genderless aesthetics decades ahead of his time, introducing bold pink colors, rills, and intricate embroidery to 1980s Korean society. His unwavering presence on the runway for over 40 years has set the standard for Korean menswear, serving as a monumental milestone for countless Korean designers active on the global stage today.

For the past 15 years, fashion has always been at the very center of my life. As a stylist, I have completely immersed myself in the joy of rapid changes and the beautiful cycles of trends. Yet, standing before the immense presence of Kwang Hyo Chang, I was struck by a profound sense of awe beyond words. From the moment I first stepped into the world of fashion until now, he has been an unwavering lighthouse, standing firm in his place. Our conversation was more than just an interview; it was a sacred moment—a chance to find solace for my 15-year journey and the courage to take my next step.

You chose fashion despite much opposition. Was there a decisive moment when you were certain you would spend your life making clothes?

Looking back, it might seem like I had certainty, but that wasn’t the case at the time. Whether it was destiny or not, I just kept doing it, and it became mine. Because I did it well, I received recognition, which made me work harder, eventually reaching a point of no return. I didn’t have a grand certainty from the start. Back then, there were few fashion graduates in Korea, so I had fears. But I lived as I wanted, and here I am. I want to tell young people: you must throw the dice well. You must do what you want to live a life without regrets.

Was fashion a form of ‘healing’ for you, a way to soothe the wounds received from the world?

I think ‘a challenge towards the new’ is more fitting than ‘healing.’ When it was rare for men to study clothing, I wanted to be the one creating the field rather than following a path others had paved. Leaving the Military Academy for this path was likely due to my aversion to authority. Doing what I love makes designing all day fun. Without reward, there’s no joy, but I’ve been recognized and made money, so it’s truly enjoyable. Doing things my way—that is my method.

When you return to the silence of your studio after a grand show, what kind of peace do you find?

I don’t carry a heavy sense of loneliness. However, once a show is over, I find my energy completely spent—I am utterly exhausted. It’s like a shaman who has just finished a grueling ritual.

Yet, in that state of total exhaustion, my spirit (靈) alone awakens, crystal clear. That is the moment when the answers for the next show reveal themselves to me.

I don’t go out for drinks or head to clubs after a show. Instead, I quietly return home, tidy up the day, and have a meal. Before I go to sleep, I reflect on the show—weighing what was lacking and what went well—and I organize my thoughts on how to make the next one even better.

Does Kwang Hyo Chang still have a ‘final adventure’ or a ‘new challenge’ he dreams of?

Rather than a challenge, I am at an age to wrap things up well. I want to spend the next 10 years finishing well. I don’t know if I’ll keep doing collections past 80, but if I stop, I want to build a ‘Fashion Museum’ with the clothes I’ve made and donate it to the nation. Just as there is a fashion museum in Berlin, I hope there will be a space in Korea where my personal archive can help juniors. I don’t want to just disappear; I want to leave something behind.

You dressed men in pink and frills in the 80s. Was that a ‘quiet rebellion’ against prejudice?

It was an aesthetic question rather than a rebellion. ‘Must men only wear dark colors?’ Perhaps because I majored in visual design, I had no prejudice against color. Just as a chair can be made of glass (pointing to a glass chair in the showroom), clothes can break common sense. It wasn’t about telling men to be like women; it was a shift in perspective—wouldn’t it be fun to wear something new? I wanted to try something outside the box.

Fashion changes, but what is the ‘true essence of menswear’ that never fades?

The essence of menswear is classicism and masculinity. Even if I make feminine clothes, they must be based on a solid frame of traditional tailoring. Changing things without understanding the basics is meaningless. I once stood dazed for 10 minutes in Germany watching a man get married in a tuxedo jacket and a skirt. Freedom blooming atop traditional tailoring—that is the essence I pursue.

What was the most painful failure in your life, and how did it reshape you?

If I had made 100-point clothes for 40 years without failure, I wouldn’t be who I am today. When I watch show footage, there are always pieces I regret. But through those trials and errors, I feel the failures decreasing. Decreasing failure means I am becoming complete. Clothes are so precise that they reflect the maker’s mindset and philosophy. Ultimately, the process of completing a garment was the process of refining my own humanity.

You chose ‘Napoleon’ as your recent theme. What did you want to say to men today?

Napoleon was my mentor who gave the message that nothing is impossible. I wanted to awaken the spirit of challenge in young people today. I wanted to tell them: don’t just look at the world through your phones, see the real world and strive to be number one. I wanted to stir those who are complacent. Through fashion, I wanted to summon that heroic spirit once more to deliver a good message to the youth.

What advice on ‘attitude’ would you give to young designers?

If you do it half-heartedly, it becomes ‘unfinished.’ You must agonize over a single garment for a month. When swimming across a rough sea, what saves you isn’t appearance or luck, but your ‘swimming skill’ and ‘endurance.’ Don’t just try to become a star and make money. You must have the energy to return to the essence of clothing, rain or shine. You can only reach your destination by building true skill.

How do you want to be remembered as a ‘person,’ rather than a designer?

I don’t care much for being remembered as a ‘great man’ or a ‘star designer.’ I’ve learned that fame does not equate to happiness. I simply want to remain as a question mark (?). A lingering resonance that makes people wonder, ‘What kind of person was he, truly?’”

Homage to the Eternal Youth, Kwang Hyo Chang

What is greater than the numerous records of “firsts” that define designer JANG KWANG HYO is his “purity” that has remained undried for 40 years. He says he is at a point of wrapping up his career, but the ending he speaks of is closer to completion than cessation. In the silhouette of this master who willingly buys meals for juniors and takes on mentoring, we see the most beautiful realm an artist can reach.

His promise to leave a legacy of Korean fashion pride in the form of a museum donated to the nation is like a lighthouse intended to keep his juniors from losing their way in the rough seas of fashion. The “question mark” he wishes to leave is ultimately a task for all of us. Expressing deep respect for the passion of a master who has graced an era, I have no doubt that the eternal runway he envisions will be remembered as the most noble legacy for the next generation.

Launching the [K-Fashion Archive: 0 to 100] Project

Starting with this profound encounter with Master Kwang Hyo Chang, I am embarking on a long-term archive project that bridges the past, present, and future of Korean fashion.

In my journey, I have often felt that deep, historical records of Korean designers were less accessible compared to the extensive literature on international designers. As both a devoted fan of fashion and a professional stylist, I felt a strong calling to contribute to our industry by documenting these invaluable stories through my own lens. I am also convinced that this journey will allow me to grow alongside the masters I interview.

Through this series, I aim to collect the ‘Untold Narratives’ that define the DNA of Korean fashion, spanning from first-generation masters to the emerging creators captivating the global stage. My goal is to move beyond mere success stories and capture the authentic narratives of growth and the human journeys of those who walk this path.

I hope these records, connecting Korea, Europe, and the world, will serve as a reliable map for future students of fashion and a profound guide for global K-Culture enthusiasts to discover the true depth of Korean fashion. This journey, rooted in the legacy of Jang Kwang-hyo, has only just begun. Stay tuned for the next chapter of Korean fashion.

A series of mini interviews with some of

our favorite artists sharing their unique stories about their lives and journeys.

We're thrilled to be interviewing the talented Antonella, who has created her own universe with her own art.

Multidisciplinary artist Antonella De Giorgio was born in Malta and grew up in Sydney, Australia.

In her work, she explores what lies beyond the tangible world. Through mediums such as crochet, painting and photography, she creates images that seem to spring from a mutated nature, taking us on a journey through mythology, storytelling, religion and psychology.

She creates “creatures” that represent a place in the human psyche that seems unknown to many, raising questions about what lies behind our human construction of reality.

She uses her photographs and other media in a painterly way to create surreal and psychedelic images, eschewing all post-processing.

Antonella’s muses come from her everyday life and the Berlin underground scene.

Q. why have you decided to become an artist?

I decided to become an artist because the urge to create was unbearable.

I think it began when my mother gave me the family camera to take some images of us. She encouraged me alot. She was a sower . And i would watch how excited she would get when she started something and finished it. I was impressed by her energy.

I use to make alot of food out of playdough and plaster things for my barbies. I would also make them clothes. My art teacher was so terrible i thought- i could do a better job than her.

Q. Was there a defining moment in your life when you knew you were an artist?

When it took me three months to make a squashed fairy out of fimo back in 2001.

The inspiration was out of my lady cottinghams squashed fairy book by Brian Froud.

Q. DO you have a formal art education or are you self taught?

I was self taught but studied at Kensington Tafe then the college of fine arts in Sydney Australia.

Q. WHAT does your work aim to say?

I work in series as i am a multi disciplined artist.

A lot of my work is about exploring your own way of perception through playing with my images- like cloud watching. Depending on where you stand , the viewer seeing different images emerging.

I work under themes of The other, the apocalypse and the hidden world of the ocean , religion , and reinvented species. When i create my crochet creatures they are ancient beings from another plane of reality , us humans cannot see, unless in a certain trance state is induced.

With my photography i like to document subcultures and people who are originals and live their self made styles.

Q. who are your biggest influences?

Leigh bowery, Andy warhole, otto dix, nick cave (artist) , steven arnold, jack smith, david lachapell, brett whitley, vali myers, grebnellaw, the nanny, mother nature.

Q. What is your dream project?

To create a rock opera dance extravaganza.

Q. How do you stay motivatied an productive in your art practice?

Hmm pain- frustration of the world. Making things i wanna wear that are not invented yet.

The beauty of life and the humor of it all. My imagination inspires me along with my friends.

Q. What is the best piece of advice you`ve received an artist?

Don’t give up.

Q. What is the most important advice you could give to an aspiring artist?

Don’t listen to the nos. And listen to your instincts.

I've always loved trying on and photographing clothes in the dressing room, even as a teenager, and that has continued to this day. I usually visit the store to see what trends are driving and what's new. Then I pick the best ones and style them with my shoes and accessories to check the style. It's one of the most interesting things to see the variety of products and styling different brands together, especially in stores with multiple brands rather than just brand store.

And this week, after checking out the Kate Moss collection in the Anine Being store, I visited the Ganni store, where I found more colorful and interesting designs.

I've always been impressed with the attentive and genuine service from the staff at Ganni. Thank you so much!

Although it was late September, it was hot and unpredictable weather, but I tried out the 3 dresses in the Ganni store. Dresses are always the easiest pieces to style. A great dress can be worn alone for a stylish styling, or paired with a jacket or coat for a cool outfit. In addition to dresses, there were plenty of knits, coats, jeans, long skirts and pants in leopard print (a big trend for 2024), and a special limited edition collaboration with New Balance that caught my eye. The main takeaway? There were plenty of options for fall and winter, including tops and bottoms, knits and coats.

What do you do when you become famous and earn a lot of money?” a friend asks him. "Then I wouldn't be able to paint anymore," says Mike Corkill. He's afraid of being discovered.

His friends encourage him: If you want to get a permanent residence permit, you have to have health insurance. And the authorities need to see that you're successful. Because Germany wants successful people. You need to be known. You need a solo exhibition.

Unfortunately, he hates the gallery business: it consists only of people standing around, drinking champagne and talking about pictures, but not painting themselves. Nevertheless, he gets down to work: for months he paints on 19 large pictures. On the afternoon of January 30, he found out that the exhibition wasn't going to happen for the time being. he drinks wine He goes to his studio and drinks more wine. At midnight he leaves and does not appear again. His friends and his lover Christine go to the police. They put missing persons notices in shops and cafes. "Mike Corkill, 5'5", brown corduroys, long black coat, black boots. Disappeared since Sunday, January 30th. Last seen in Manteuffelstrasse.” On March 30, he was found drowned under the pier of the theater ship in Urbanhafen. Nobody knows how it happened. He was disappointed, drunk, hurt and sick. But he was also newly in love, full of energy.

He hated interpretation. Because interpreting ends the amazement. Now his friends console themselves with the fact that the amazement at his paintings continues: clowns, punks, pitchforks, devils, angels, knights, bears, palm trees, pyramids, saints, bombs, skeletons, policewomen, guitarists, koalas and anchors.

Mike Corkill got up at 8:30 am every day, put the big espresso machine on the stovetop, did 30 push-ups and 50 sit-ups in the kitchen, took the espresso to the studio and opened his journal. He wrote down everything that was incidental but important. Who he had met the day before. What he would have to buy today. How much money he spent yesterday and on what. He wrote it down so precisely because he often forgot everyday things.

Then he planned his day. Which picture he would finish when, what he would have to look up in the library, when he would meet whom. Then he drew and painted and didn't look at a clock. Then evening came and he drank red wine.

On the last Thursday evening of every month, when admission to the museum was free, he looked at paintings in Berlin museums. Goya, Zille, Grosz, Dix, Bosch. Comics and the church paintings of the 15th century, everything was important, exciting, magnificent.

But Mike Corkill wasn't the least bit educated. He had a craving for images of old Europe. Maybe that had something to do with his background. Born in New Zealand, he came to Canada when he was two years old. He married, taught himself to draw and paint, and longed for culture. He travelled. He learned Catalan, English, Italian, French, Spanish and German. He saw Antwerp, Barcelona, Sardinia, Milan, Brittany, Paris, Morocco. In 1999 he came to Berlin. The city dissolved its borders and made its contradictions productive, it found its identity in the search for it. Mike Corkill must have recognized himself in it.

He designed menus for restaurants and hot dog stands, he colored and sold interim sketches on wrapping paper. He lived in a Berlin wagon complex. In winter he sometimes burned drawings in the oven. He exchanged oil paintings for a warm meal, paint, a canvas or wine.

Photographs and self-portraits from this period show a gaunt Corkill glaring at the viewer. It's easy to think he was moody, but his friends say he wasn't. Thoughtful yes, shy, angry at the contrasts between rich and poor, at politics. Sad but not. "Berlin has lost a wonderful painter and we have lost a wonderful friend," they write in an obituary.

The "deportation", as he called it, was a trauma: in 2006 he was arrested in Perpignan; his visa had expired. He was taken away in handcuffs and flown to New Zealand via Bangkok. He was born there, but he didn't belong there. He stayed there and in Australia for two years until he had saved enough money to fly to Europe. He always raised the maintenance for his son in Canada. German friends had offered to send him money for the flight, but that was out of the question. He didn't want to be endured; also not from the state.

"He refused security. He's always avoided talking about it," says a friend. The fear of being deported again did not let go of him even after his return to Berlin. Andrew Unger

AUCH WENN DU NOCH SEHR JUNG BIST, MÖCHTE ICH DICH FRAGEN :

WAS BEDEUTET DIR ERWACHSENSEIN?

Erwachsensein heißt für mich, Verantwortung für mich zu übernehmen, so wie ich das jetzt in meinem Leben tun kann, und Entscheidungen selbst zu treffen, wie zum Beispiel eine Schule für Stylisten zu besuchen. Auch verstehe ich mich jetzt mehr als zuvor.

DU BIST STYLISTIN. WS IST FÜR DICH DAS BESONDERE AN DIESEM BERUF?

Ich habe es schon immer geliebt, mich aufzustylen und anders als andere auszusehen. Bis ich Stylistin wurde, hatte ich keine Visionen für mein Leben. Zuerst wollte ich wie so biele Model werden, aber diese Arbeit gefiel mir nicht, war mir nicht kreativ genug. Ich liebe den Prozess des Kreierens, die Gantasie, die ich einbringen kann. Ich mixe Vintage mit eigenen Entwürfen und auch mit Stücken kleiner, unabhängiger Designer.

MÜSSEN MENSCHEN ARBEITEN, UM GLÜCKLICH ZU SEIN?

Ich denke, wir sollten alle arbeiten. Allerdings bin ich vielen Menschen begegnet, die unglücklich mit ihrer Arbeit waren. Deshalb ist es so wichtig, etwas auszuwählen, das man liebt. Letztendlich ist es aber nicht die Arbeit, die glücklich macht, sondern der Sinn, den man dem eigenen Leben gibt. Ich allerdings muss arbeiten, um mich glüklich zu fühlen.

HAST DU IN DEINER KINDHEIT BESTÄTIGUNG FÜR DEINE ART ERHALTEN?

Unglücklicherweise bekan ich als Kind nicht viel Bestätigung, aber das hat mich nur stärker gemacht und ermutigt, meinen Weg zu finden. Es war meine beste Freundin Mima, die mich bestätigte, an mich glaubte und mir Mut machte.

ALS FREISCHAFFENDE IST DAS LEBEN MEHR ALS UNSICHER. WIE VIEL SICHERHEIT IST DIR WICHTIG?

Mir geht es nicht um Reichtum, ich brauche nicht viel. Ich muss mein Leben bestreiten und meine Miete zahlen können. Wichtig ist mir, eine Krankenversicherung zu haben. Es würde mir Angst machen, krank zu werden und kein Geld für das Krankenhaus zu haben. Aber ich denke, das ist für alle das Minimum and Sicherheit, das man sich wünscht.

GLAUBST DU AN UTOPIEN? WENN JA, WELCHE IST DEINE PERSÖNLICHE LIEBLIGSUTOPIE?

Auf jeden Fall. 2010 nahm ich an einem Bikini-Wettbewerb teil, der vom koreanischen Cosmopolitan-Magazin organisiert worden war. In meinem Profi für den Wettbewerb schrieb ich: ,,Schau in meine Augen, und du gehst nach Utopia. Schau auf meine Lippen, und du gehst ins Paradies!" Deine Frage erinnert mich an die Sätze, die ich schrieb. Meine Lieblingsutopie ist, dass jeder sich in Kleidung ausdrücken kann, dass jeder sich kleiden kann, wie er mag, sich frisieren kann, wie es ihm gefällt, die verrücktesten Schuhe trägt, weil ihm danach ist, und ich an dem Ort bin, wo all diese Menschen zusammenkommen. Spaßeshalber sage ich gern, ich hätte am liebsten jeden Tag Fashion Week. ich möchte ernsthaft in einer Welt leben, in der die Freiheit eines jeden respektiert wird.

GIBT ES AUTORITÄTEN, DIE DU FÜRCHTEST?

Keine Autorität der Welt schafft es, mich zum Fürchten zu bringen. Ich fürchte mich nur davor, keine Kontrolle über mich zu haben.

WER SIND DEINE HELDEN ODER HELDNNEN?

Die Designer, die den Frauen die Freiheit gaben, sich zu entfalten, wie CoCo Chanel oder später Yves Saint Laurent. Und die legendäre Modejournalistin Anna Piaggi, die für mich eine wirkliche Ikone war, eine Frau, die ihren einzigartigen Stil gelebt hat.

KANN EIN MENSCH KUNST SEIN?

Ja, wenn dieser Mensch sehr kreativ, inspirierend und außergewöhnlich ist. Es ist aber auch unbedeingt die innere Haltung, die bestimmt, ob dieser mensch ein Kunstwerk ist.

WÄRST DU GERN EIN LEBENDEES KUNSTWERK?

Ich werde der Show des Lebens nicht müde, und ich behaupte, ich bin ein lebendes Kunstwerk.

WAS VERLANGST DU DIR SELBST AB?

Unabhängig zu sein, weitestgehend.

STELL DIR VOR, EINE FEE WÜRDE EIR EINEN EINZIGEN WUNSCH ERFÜLLEN. WELCHER WÄRE DAS?

Außer an mich selbst zu glauben kann ich nichts tun. Ich denke viel nach, aber ich habe keine Wünsche. Das ist wohl ein gutes Zeichen und zeigt, dass ich sehr zufrieden bin.
