Baby Quilt with Scallop Binding

Another new baby great-niece has been added to our family! And with the addition of a new baby a quilt must be made!

This just might be one of my favorite baby quilts! I found the pattern online-it's a giant Star. The fabric is a left-over layer cake from a previous quilt I made for another great niece.

The true star of this quilt is the super cute scallop binding! It's not made like regular binding but it really made the quilt girly which is what I wanted.

I won't tell you it took me 2 times to get the binding just right-the first time the binding was a little too short! And because one of the fabrics I used was discontinued (I believe it was out like 10 years ago!!) I had to make a whole new one! The underside of the binding is a cute black and white stripe (sorry no pics!)

I quilted this one myself just using a straight line. I love once I wash a quilt how crinkly they get!

2015 Christmas Gifts

I cannot believe how quickly this year went by! I have been crazy busy and looking forward to 2 weeks off from teaching! Although I do love my job-we have been busy making snow globes, mittens, snowmen, ugly Christmas sweater ornaments, elves, and gingerbread men! It's been an artful 3 weeks! And the bonus addition of a visit from the Big Guy himself! I loved listening to the kids talk to Santa! A few kids have very big wish lists!

I am a big fan of homemade gifts at Christmas. I love giving and receiving homemade gifts! Last year my student's families gave me amazing gifts and this year did not disappoint! I am blessed to be teaching at the school I am at. I love the people I co-teach with and my students and their families.

So first up for homemade gifts-my youngest is in her last year of elementary school and last year of Girl Scouts. We have been in this troop since 1st grade and we both have formed amazing friendships with those in our troop. I love love our leader and co-leader. They are amazing people! I wanted something they could use all year instead of something they will only use at Christmas time. Enter my Cricut Explore Air (have I mentioned how much I love this machine?), Design Space, and a Starbuck's Reusable cup!

I bought this beautiful glitter vinyl from Amazon. I created a gift card holder with my Cricut. I attached the gift card and holder to the cup using bakers twine and voila cute Christmas gift! My girls also wanted a cup for special teachers so I whipped them up a cup and gift card and holder too!

For my co-workers I made brownie's in a bag. I bought a pattern to sew the bags a few months back with some cute recipe themed fabric. The pattern came with recipes for the gift bags. Super handy!

I added a cute recipe card made with my Cricut using the print then cut feature. I found these super cute little spatula's at Target to add a little something extra to the gift. I tied the tops with cute baker's twine as well. For the 2 younger co-workers I gave them a Starbucks gift card in a snowman card.

Merry Christmas and I hope 2016 is an amazing year!

Winner Winner Cricut Explore Air Winner!

I must admit-I was so surprised to get an email that I won a Cricut Explore Air. At first I thought it might be a hoax but then I did a little research and remembered that I had entered a contest online on Pinterest! It didn't take long for it to ship to me either!

I have now had it a little over a week and have mostly been trying to figure it out. I LOVED my Expression-used it all the time for work, for home, and to make gifts. To say the Explore Air has a learning curve is a bit of an understatement! Everything I knew how to do with my Expression is a tad bit different on the Explore Air.

LOVE-that it has a built in Bluetooth so I can create from my laptop or my iPad. It's a bit tricky on the iPad but I think once I get the feel for it, it will become easier. Smart Dial-okay this is my favorite thing! Turn the dial and the machine knows exactly how much pressure. So far I have only cut cardstock & vinyl but it has made it so you no longer have to guess at how much pressure the machine applies to different materials. There is also a custom setting to set your own items as well. A huge plus to this machine is it will write & cut! I only have made one card using this feature but so far I like it a lot! It also came filled with a bunch of images to cut on Cricut Design Space! Some are free some are not but hey no more buying cartridges just because you like 1 image! There is also a slot for your cartridges too! This machine is fairly quiet too! My Expression was pretty loud!

Not so much LOVE-A little disappointed there isn't a feature to curve letters around a circle. You have to do it all manually-takes FOREVER but I am getting the hang of it. Print then cut feature doesn't work well with my printer-I cannot figure out for the life of me how to make that work like it should! I have done all the reading and research and it still doesn't work. No multiple mats! UGH! This one is hard for me. I like to cut out a bunch of shapes on different sheets of paper and without multiple mats its hard to get done what I need to get done. It's a lot of guess work for me to see how many of each shape fits on a 12x12 mat. The tools my Expression had were better than the new one's that have been out for a while. I liked the flimsyness of the old spatula-this one is pretty stiff and not as flexible or thin. The scraper also isn't as great as the old one-this one likes to peel off the sticky stuff off my mat.

All in all I think this machine is great! There are a few issues that I personally have with it but it doesn't stop me from creating with it. I'm sure in the future with more updates this machine will be the best personal cutting machine on the market!

A very special lady turned the big 5-0 and how else do you celebrate that special birthday than with dinner and wine and painting party!

I knew she loved Chandon and I knew I wanted to make something with the bottle. I did a bit of research and didn't really see anything I wanted to make. I found a few directions on painted wine bottles. So I purchased a bottle of Chandon and Chalkboard spray paint.

First, you need to take the label off the front and back. I soaked the bottle in HOT water in my kitchen sink. I wanted to keep the beautiful foil and the brand the champagne was on the neck. After I soaked and peeled the label (sticky residue was left so I used coconut oil to get it off).

I covered the neck of the bottle with foil to protect the label. I then took it outside and propped the bottle on a box and sprayed it. I let it dry for a half hour then added a second coat.

Now for the fun part, once it was all dry I got out my Cricut Expression and using craft room designed the 50 and fabulous using the Chalkboard font. I did start with gold glitter vinyl but consensus in my house hated it-then I tried using a Chalk Marker and using the cut-out like a stencil and I didn't like it. White vinyl was the winner. I happened to have purple vinyl (and the recipients favorite color) to give it a more finished look.

I added the 1965 to the back using the Chalkboard font.

Summer Sparkle Quilt

I saw this pattern from the summer of 2014 online somewhere and knew I wanted to make it-for the 4th of July. I loved the colors of the ombre fabric and loved how it looked all put together.

Okay if you make this just know the yardage requirements are NOT correct! Add at least another 1/4 to 1/2 yard. I had to use pieces with selvage because the cutting instructions weren't the greatest. Luckily I found more fabric on Etsy so help make up for some of the "wrong" pieces.

Other than the cutting instructions and yardage being incorrect; I very much love how this one turned out. I found the back & the binding at Fat Quarter Shop. I love the pinwheel binding and the 4th of July fun backing!

I had it quilted by Crinklelove. She has quilted one other quilt for me and has ALWAYS been super easy to work with and offered to fix my major boo-boo. When you step away for years on making quilts things happen & I forget certain details! Hopefully the next one I send in to her won't have any issues.

Big A Little a Baby Quilt

When your best friend of 30 years is having her first baby, you send baby clothes and you make the baby a quilt! I had a lot of fun making this quilt! I saw this kit on the Fat Quarter Shop website and knew that this was the one I was going to make for the baby. I didn't even look at her registry but when I finally did I was surprised she had asked for Dr. Seuss books! I love how it turned out! I had it quilted by a long-arm quilter I found online. I love her patterns!! I will be using her again in the near future!

The back is almost cuter than the front!

Sophisticated Mermaid Birthday Party

My oldest turned 18 and she wanted a Mermaid themed birthday party. I thought we were past having themed parties but oh well. They only turn 18 once, right? It was a lot of fun to try and find things that fit the mermaid theme. Pinterest has a million ideas but most were for little kids not 18 year olds.

We have a nice backyard & with the birthday being a September one you can pretty much be guaranteed the weather will be nice. I found a version of this sign on Pinterest; luckily my husband is handy & made the sign & painted it. I added vinyl letters made on my Cricut Expression & the Life Is A Beach cartridge. The starfish I found a Michaels in a bag of 6; 2 big sizes & 4 smaller sizes that I turned into Mermaid Hair Clips for the girls (this also was their "goody" to take home).

I wanted to turn the backyard into a Mermaid Grotto. I found a pretty inexpensive tent on Amazon. I wanted one with sides but also wasn't color just white.

The Decorations were simple everything was found at either Party City or Hobby Lobby.

Sea Coral Rock Candy in Mermaid Sand (bought online)

The grotto had a net hanging from the top of the tent and the kids added some sea animals and seashells.

The food: on top Crabby Crabwiches (croissant with chicken salad), Sea Cucumber Sandwiches, and Peanut Butter & Jellyfish Starfish. There was also grape seaweed skewers, Sand Dollars (potato chips), Seashell Pasta, Sea Sponge Marshmallows, Candy Fish, Sea Pearl Gumballs & Goldfish Crackers.

My youngest made cupcakes that fit the Under The Sea Mermaid Theme

My husband strung Christmas white lights in the tent to add more to the atmosphere.

The tent made it where the girls had their own little restaurant outside. They had a lot of privacy & I think they enjoyed the party. We have a pool in our community that they went to after all the food & present opening.

Super Easy Baby Quilt

I am all for making things special! My nephew & his wife are expecting a little girl next month & I wanted to give them something special for their little girl to be. I found this pattern online & after pinning it and & doing a little bit of research on it decided that this was easy! I followed the pattern directions. Now I am a hand-appliqueer (is that even a word?) I cut out the letters using my Cricut Expression & paper. I cut out a few different sizes because I wasn't sure what size I was going to use. Once I decided on the size and font I was going to use I traced the letters onto the fabric then used Jililly Studio Applique Glue to glue onto the white fabric. I then hand stitched using Bohin needles that I also purchased from Jililly.

Now the fun part making the quilt batting sandwich!! I used white batting as I didn't want the natural to show through the white fabric! I also use a spray to "stick" the layers together. I hate pinning!!

I used my walking foot on my machine I quilted it using 2" lines. You could get really fancy with it if you want to with your quilting. I took the safe route on this one! Then I pinned on the binding. I cut the strips into 3" strips folded them over with my iron. I like to have a little bit more fabric to work with on my binding. I stitch the front using my walking foot but then I hand stitch the binding to the back of the quilt. This one is a small size quilt so it took no time at all to get the binding on it.

This is the border fabric, binding fabric, & the back fabric. Aren't they delicious?

Finished product! I think this was my favorite one to make. It's small, it's easy, & it's simple. I cannot wait to see my great-niece on this quilt!

PROJECT LIFE: My Experience So Far

It's been a while since I have blogged about my experience with Project Life. I never imagined how fast I can pull together a scrapbook!! I've been working on a school scrapbook for my youngest. My older two have beautiful Creative Memories albums (that are still a work in progress! UGH!!). Since I can no longer purchase my favorite album, I decided to jump on the Project Life bandwagon! Let me just say, it has been so worth the investment! I have put one whole school year into the album & it took only a few hours. YES a few hours! It's amazing. More & more places are carrying the Project Life items so it's becoming less of a headache to find cute things. It's a challenge for me to think outside the Creative Memories bubble but I rather am enjoying the simplicity that Project Life is.

Happy Easter Happy Birthday Banner

I've never made a double banner before or bunting or whatever you want to call it. I designed it & cut it out using my Cricut Expression with Cricut Craft Room. The cartridges used were Pretty Pennants (downloaded directly from Cricut.com) & Kate's ABC's. I love Kate's ABC's. It's a pretty font along with cute images. I use it a lot! This was the first time I've used Pretty Pennants but I know I will use it a lot!

I used solid pastel 12x12 paper cut at 5". Each letter was cut on pattern paper cut anywhere from 2"-3.5" depending on if it was a capital letter or not.

I could have added butterfly's, bunnies', & chicks to this but ran out of time. It would have been cute with added items but for a last minute project it works without those things.

I strung it all together with bakers twine. I have a tiny 1/4" hole punch and I used a needle to thread the twine through each pennant. Super easy project with great results!

Baby Quilt Idea

I have been a bit MIA-life has gotten busy! I plan on regularly posting as long as life doesn't get in the way! I can usually be found pinning items on my Pinterest Boards for ideas! One quilt that I found on there yesterday I am wanting to make!

I've admired this one for a while (and actually forgot about it!)and never had a good reason to make it but I finally do! My nephew & his wife just found out they are having a little girl! They are naming her after my mother-in-law which I think is so sweet! I have until July to get this complete!

After printing off the instructions from the Moda Bake Shop website, I now get to find some cute Layer Cake Fabrics. I've never used layer cakes before, I'm a fat quarter or jelly roll kind of girl so this will be a fun one for me to make! I am also a fan of appliqué. I do it all by hand as I am not very good on my machine.

Girl Scout Pin Board

I spent a good chunk of my day with my little Girl Scout yesterday! It's amazing at what we can squish in to our day! We had World Thinking Day at a local middle school then after we had to go sell cookies at a cookie booth! It was a crazy day!!! This was the first year we participated in World Thinking Day and it was an interesting experience to say the least. There is a lot that goes into this! I tip my hat to our wonderful leaders of our troop! They made sure our girls were pretty prepared for this event! Our country was the United Kingdom, which worked out GREAT because one of our leader's lived in England & married an English man! All of our display items were the real deal from the Bobby Hats to the coins! I will say for the most part this event was MASS chaos! 250+ girl scouts were involved in this! It would have been more enjoyable had it been a bit smaller but the girls had a great time & learned hopefully something! The girls also had to take a passport to each country & get a stamp in their book so they knew they visited that country! We do "swaps" at these events. A "swap" is a pin that the troops make. Our girls had to have enough for every girl to get 1 and they have to represent somehow your country. My daughter got about 19 out of the 21 (some troops didn't make enough which was a bummer). As she was collecting these pins all day I was mentally thinking of a way to display these since a lot of work has gone into them. Seriously, some troops got super creative! I didn't want the fun experience she had just get tossed into the trash. I will scrapbook the event but I don't want the pins in a book! After our cookie booth, we took a trip to Beverly's Craft Store. They have 12x12 scrapbook shadow box frames. It was perfect for what I wanted to create! Then we had to find paper. I wanted something that had to do with World Thinking Day. I figured finding a world map scrapbook page would be EASY! Not so much! after looking at all the paper (my daughter kept going for the sparkly paper!!), we found something close to what I was wanting! World Stamps. Not as cute as a world map would have been but still cute. I bought a huge roll of burlap ribbon (I'll use it on other projects! We have a graduation coming up!). I cut 2 strips at 12" long. Pinned all the pins onto both ribbons then glued the ribbons on the scrapbook page, glued down the passport, then put the page in the frame. Easy! I love how it turned out.

NEW Cricut Explore

I love my Cricut Expression. I use it on as many projects as I can. I've gotten really good at it too! Through my own trial and error I pretty much can make ANYTHING on that machine! So I was a bit surprised to see that the people who make the Cricut Expression just came out with the Cricut Explore.

I am not jumping on the Explore band-wagon just yet. Does anyone remember when they came out with the Cricut Imagine? I was going to get one of those then read reviews of those who had it & had a friend who bought it & was super upset with it. It did not work the way it should have. After a week she boxed it up & shipped it back! There were a lot of people who were upset that the functionality of the machine wasn't up to par. There were a ton of bugs that needed to be worked out~

This to me is the Expression on steroids. The one does have one dial to turn to cut whatever medium you are cutting which is nice-takes out a ton of guess work which can be frustrating. I do like that you can design using the iPad {this was something I did request of the makers of Cricut when they came out with their hand held designer device Gypsy}.

Downside to this new device is it's an updated version of the Expression. There isn't a spot for all those cartridges you already own that are not connected to Design Studio. There is suppose to be a way to use cartridges using a cord I believe. Design Studio won't work with it-there is a new online program to create with. It doesn't have the cool features the Imagine had. A feature of the print and cut like the Imagine would have been cool. This machine was a lot of years in the making and so far I am unimpressed. Maybe once I see the new machine in action I'll change my mind but for now I won't be investing in this machine.

Little Girl Sleep-Over-Embellished Pillow Case

My little one just turned 9! UGH! Why do they have to grow up? I don't think she should be that big just yet. She wanted a sleep over with her friends. We invited 4 little girls over. Our theme was Zebra Print & Hot Pink. I went a little crazy with it but it was so much fun!

I hate goodie bags. They usually are filled with useless stuff-candy & junky toys. So for this party I made each girl a personalized pillow case. I purchased pink pillow cases at Kmart-I got 5 for $20! What a deal!

Next I went to Hobby Lobby and got Zebra Print Ribbon. I stitched using a straight stitch the ribbon around the opening of the pillow case. Easy!!

I purchased Iron-On Cricut Vinyl to put the names on the pillow cases. I watched A LOT of videos on how to use it. After my own trial & error I figured it out. I used Cricut Craft Room, you type the name then use the flip button to flip the name so it's backwards. Also, make sure when you put the vinyl on the mat, the shiny side is down, that is your transfer tape! I used a pressing cloth over the plastic transfer tape, I didn't want to melt the plastic to the pillow case. The birthday girl got the silver vinyl and the rest of the girls names were done in white (they all would have been in the glitter but my store only had 1 roll of the glitter!!)

Project Life-My Personal Experience (so far)

Since I can no longer get what I need from my favorite Direct Sales Scrapbook company I have decided to to try out Project Life by Becky Higgins. Several years ago I purchased a deal to make a digital scrapbook that was offered by Becky Higgins partner at the time. They no longer have a partnership and currently I hold a $99.99 coupon I paid for that I cannot use. I never got an email or notice of any kind that the partnership had ended. After emailing with Becky Higgins company and basically was told that they don't know what the future is for those that still have valid coupons (mine is good until January of 2016!!). I then tried to get in touch with Ziblio, the ex-partner but never got a response to my email.

So currently I have a bad taste with the people of Becky Higgins. They have known about this issue for 2 years and still haven't made good for those that hold these coupons. They have not offered me any compensation of any sort; just basically I am SOL for purchasing a coupon to make a digital scrapbook. They recently had an issue with HSN and people threw a fit about and they made good to those that purchased thru HSN. Why not make good for those that hold these $100 coupons?

Project Life looks like a great system to help with those that like to scrapbook. I now see their stuff in my local Michael's, Hobby Lobby, and Beverly's. So, I purchased about $100 in supplies. Michael's had buy one get one 50% off and Hobby Lobby had stuff that Michael's didn't have. I am currently putting together my youngest daughter's Elementary years scrapbook. I will say it's easy, things are pre-cut BUT I will say I don't like all the journaling cards and I really wish there were more selection as far as kits goes. I found a mini kit for school (I will be able to get a few pages from this kit). I wish also the kits were more color coordinated so I can extend the life so to speak of these kits. I like themes but there isn't much selection.

I'll post pictures of my album once I can get more supplies.

Red Solo Cup-EASY Father's Day Gift

I found this cute cup at Bed, Bath, & Beyond. It was like $9.99. I downloaded the new Cricut Chalkboard font! I am OBSESSED with this font!! LOVE IT! I also am in love that now their vinyl is sold in a ROLL for $6.99 {at Joanns}. You just cut what you need and I feel like I am getting more bang for my buck now that I'm not spending that amount on 2 sheets of vinyl!

Walgreen's has candy pretty cheap. I put a Styrofoam ball in the bottom of the cup. Taped the candy to skewer sticks, tied them with curling ribbon, and popped them into the foam. To hide the ball I bought reusable ice cubes at Bed, Bath, and Beyond.

Easy gift, the cost for the complete bouquet is around $25!

It's safe to say I am a Pinterest addict!! Like so addicted. I find stuff all the time to post. I love ideas that are so simple that make you "Huh, why didn't I think of that?"

My favorite idea is using CD wrappers for cookies. I signed up for cookies for the last day of school and instead of buying them I made homemade {because seriously if I have any extra's I want them to be yummy!}

This also made passing them out to the kids so much easier! I taped the back with a little washi tape {I love Martha Stewarts, cute colors}.

Valentine's Day 2013

Emilee's class had a cute little party. So we had to make 31 Special Valentine's for her friends. She wanted fortune cookies, because if you know my girl, SHE LOVES Chinese food. She'd like to go to Panda Express every day if we could {we got a Panda about a year ago close to our house, we need to move LOL}. I found the idea for fabric/felt fortune cookies on Martha Stewart's website. I started making these with hot glue but the hot glue doesn't really work when you fold the "cookie", use tacky glue! It works the best for this project, just make sure the glue is dry before folding.

I had a bunch of left over bags from a party and the paper is from a few years ago from Martha Stewart {can you tell I'm a Martha fan?}. I cut the toppers out on my Cricut and using the George & Basic Shapes Cartridge. The heart was cut from the Valentine 2010 cartridge.

Em was in charge of writing names on the toppers and gluing the name plate on.

The completed cookies {don't look at the dirty stairs!!} Boys got red and girls got pink.

On Valentine's Day we woke up to this on our drive way. Took ALL DAY to figure out who did this {Chey rides to school with a good friend and she did this}

I helped work in Em's class for the party. My friend {and room mom} had a couple of cute crafts for the kids and some yummy snacks.

Johnny & I went out to dinner to Guadalajara {again it's too close to my house, we need to move! Living so close to yummy places is killing me!} I made for dessert Homemade Oreos! OH MY GOSH these were so yummy and none of the bad crap in them!!

It's official, we have 2 {yes 2} teenagers in the house! YIKES! We celebrated our only yellow haired girls special day with a low-key day! Since her birthday landed on the first day back at school after Christmas Break we didn't plan much! She had two requests: dinner at Chick-Fil-A and a Pazookie for dessert! She made it super easy on me!

Here are some things about this girl:
*She is very competitive!! Oh my! She keeps me on my toes!
*She loves to draw and is really good at it. I wish I had her talent
*She is NOT a morning person
*We've really lucked out that we don't have the "middle school girl drama"
*She is an A/B honor roll student
*She is super funny
*She's a good sister {most of the time}
*She's taken to having to share a room with her little sister in good stride. She's counting down until the big sister goes to college so she can have her bedroom!
*She will possibly be a lawyer one day! That girl can argue like nobody's business!
*She always tells me she's going to be a better driver than her big sister {we'll see about that!}
*She is full of confidence! She doesn't care what anyone thinks
*She is a good babysitter. She keeps her little cousin entertained when he's here. She's buddies with her cousin Ty; just got to keep an eye on them because they are T-R-O-U-B-L-E! Ty will be a sad boy once the boyfriends come along {and that better be a long ways away!}

My Fix Has Arrived

It was like Christmas arrived at my front door today!! My fix has arrived from Stitch Fix!

The box arrived BEAT UP by the P.O. I've never had a box delivered that looked so bad! I was worried the clothes had gotten ruined but they arrived nicely packaged!

Once I opened up the tissue I was surprised at what my stylist put together for me! One top I had seen on their Instagram feed and liked it and was glad it was in my box!

First up: Black Skirt, top with sailboats and Jacket. Not a fan of the skirt or the jacket but I do like the top!

Then I paired the other top with the jacket with my jeggings {don't mind the fat girl, I am working on it GOING AWAY AND NEVER COMING BACK!} Still don't care for the jacket.

Then paired the sailboat top with my jeggings. I like this top a lot more than I thought I would. It's really not my style. Actually both tops aren't something I would normally wear!

I do love that each piece of clothing comes with a card that not only tells you what would look cute paired with it but an actual picture to show you! I can use what I already have to make a cute put-together outfit.

I'm still deciding on what I'll keep. I am going to let my husband give me his opinion! We have an informal dinner party to attend on the 2nd of February and I specifically asked for something for that event. Now if 20 pounds would magically disappear I would be so much happier!
