DIY Dollar Tree Bookends!

I found these cute little owl piggy banks at the Dollar Tree and thought they had potential. First thing i did was remove the stopper on the bottom.

Then I placed them one at a time on top of my broom stick and proceeded to spray paint them outside.

This is what I used but next time I would like to try Krylon Looking Glass Paint but that's a little pricey for me right at this moment.

I filled the owls with left over pebbles from a previous project and put the stopper back on. You can use anything you have at your disposal. Maybe even some coins! If your stopper is finicky you can hot glue it back on so it stays in there firmly. The owls were pretty stable without the pebbles but I wanted them to have more weight so that they could act as proper bookends.

Expedition Pinterest: Produce Soaking

So I started juice fasting about two weeks ago and that meant buying tons of fruits and vegetables in bulk. I am notorious for letting veggies go bad in the fridge but in my defense they only last a few days anyway. One day, while perusing Pinterest I saw a pin that said you should soak your produce in a water/vinegar bath before putting them away to take off all of the dirt and pesticides that are on them and also to make them last longer. My first thought was, "Ew! Won't they taste all vinegary??" But I tried it anyway because I had already spent $70 on produce and didn't want them to go quickly and along with them, my money. Here are the directions I followed:

When buying fruit and veggies, always soak them in a 1:4 ratio of vinegar and water to help remove toxins and pesticides - even organic! Leave them soaking for up to an hour, longer with nonorganic apples. At the end of the bath, sometimes you can even see cloudy like stuff in the water from the skins and waxes, and dirt on the bottom.Vinegar is the key!

Here are my results:

In this picture you can see the waxes and other cloudy substances coming off of the fruits.

After I drained the sink I gave them another good rinse with cold water and kept them refrigerated. My cucumbers which usually go bad first are still good after almost 3 weeks!!
I will definitely be doing this again!

Expedition Pinterest: Brownie in a Mug

So I went to dinner with my hubby today and the place where we went isn't known for their awesome desserts. Food yes, desserts, not so much. When we left the restaurant I had a huge craving for chocolate but there were no open places where I could go in and get chocolate cake except the grocery store but its such a hassle to get in and out quickly. When I got home I remembered I pinned something on Pinterest about making a brownie super quickly so I decided to give it a try.

Here's what I used:
4 tablespoons of flour
3 Heaping tablespoons of hot cocoa mix
1 tablespoon of milk chocolate chips
2 tablespoons of vegetable oil
2 tablespoons of water and a pinch of salt

You'll also need a mug, a microwave, and something to stir with. The Pinterest recipe calls for 2 tablespoons plain cocoa powder and 4 tablespoons of sugar but I didn't have either so I improvised and hot cocoa mix already has sugar in it plus 4 tablespoons of sugar seems like a lot.

Basic directions:
Place dry ingredients in mug then add oil and water. Stir together until clumps flour are gone. Microwave for 50-60 seconds and voila!! You have a personal sized brownie!

Even with the substitutions I made it still turned out awesome!

Accidental Samoa Ice Cream!

Sometimes I get extreme cravings for Samoa Girl Scout cookies and there are no badge collecting munchkins around. What's a cookie living girl to do!!?? Thanks to my frugal ways I accidentally found a dupe for those caramely, coconuty treats one day because I didn't want to pay $10 for Ben and Jerry's. I could either buy two Ben and Jerry's pints with my buy two get $1.50 off or buy two Kroger Private Select pints for $4! So Kroger ice cream it was! As it turned out it was great! My fave was the Caramel Coconut Flan but the Cinnamon Chocolate one was pretty awesome too! Hope this info helps anyone with a Girl Scout Cookie craving!

P.S. Don't forget the Chocolate Magic Shell on top!

Hello surfers of the world wide web! The eight followers that I have may be wondering where I've been and why I haven't been posting anything lately. This is the reason...

I GOT A PUPPY!!!

He's a French Bulldog and his name is REMY.

He is the cutest thing but he takes up so much time. This is our first time owning a dog so we are running around back and forth trying to potty train him and keep him entertained. He's so dependent on us and he gets bored by himself so I try to show him things he's never seen before so he can entertain himself. He loves empty water bottles, golf balls, chewing on ice cubes, peanut butter and eating leaves.

He also sleeps with his tongue out.

My little Remy is so funny! So if I'm not around for a while you'll know why. I have been working on some diy projects and I'll try to post those up soon.

Today I went to the mall to get some trendy summer items. I'm on a budget so I didn't want to go crazy buying things that will be out of style next season. These were the three items of my list: a crossbody bag, something neon, and something tribal. These are the items that I found.

1. Cross body bag

I found it at TJ Maxx for more than 75% off but you can click HERE and purchase it online. I chose this one versus a neon one because I can use this one for years to come.

Trend tip: If you want to stay on trend but don't want to spend the big bucks on something that will be out of style next season, buy an inexpensive version. You don't want to spend hundreds of dollars on something you'll feel self conscious about wearing later.

2. Neon

I would avoid looking like this:

I hate that overly shiny, faux satin fabric! It looks cheap and accentuates all your body's imperfections.

Sure these girls look pretty but it's too predictable. I've seen this dress a million times.

Prom is probably the only moment that teenagers get to really look their best. The event is glamorous and only happens once in a life time. For me it's more of a red carpet moment than a chance to look like a pageant queen, even though a queen is crowned. I'm thinking more Academy Awards than Toddlers and Tiaras.

It's possible to look like a million dollars for only a few hundred or less. It's also important to get a dress that's right for your body type.

This is my newest creation! I love the new cosmic print trend on clothes so I thought I would make a vase with a similar print. I used a wine bottle and acrylic paint. I love how it turned out and I'll probably make more in different colors.

Makin' Pillows

I've been living in my husband's home (our home) for over 5 months now and the throw pillows were killing me. My husband didn't like them either but they were the ones that came with the furniture he bought and what straight man is going to go to Marshall's or Target and pick up prettier throw pillows? Not mine. So finally I got so bored with them that I decided to do something about them.

One fine morning I woke up, had my oatmeal, got in my car, and drove to Joann's Fabrics. I searched and searched through the clearance section (I'm on a budget) and finally I found this awesome blue fabric. I had been searching for months for the perfect pillow fabric and I finally found it!

Here's how to make the solid print pillows.

Here's a quick tutorial on how I make the chevron pillows.

First, I cut two 13x20 inch rectangles out of the white fabric and taped over them with painters tape. I used the tape itself to space out the lines and drew a small dot with pencil where each point of the arrow should go.

I used a makeup sponge and acrylic paint and dabbed it in the white areas between the tape.

I dampened the sponge first so that it wouldn't absorb all of the paint. You can do this by running it under water and squeezing most of the excess water out.

Then I sewed an 8x20 inch rectangle of the printed fabric using a straight stitch. Let the paint dry before you do this. At least an hour to be safe.

Then sew it to the back fabric, right sides together. Watch the video for more info.

I'm excited about my new pillows. I still have two more big ones to go and a small accent one to do. Let me know if you have any suggestions on what colors would look good with these pillows.
