I am a hard core jean lover. Jeans are so versatile, comfortable a must in every one's wardrobe.
I had the honour to review a pair of the line yogajeans created by Second Denim Co.
You can wear them doing yoga because they are so comfortable, affordable and what I love especially is they are Canadian and made in Canada!

I am not doing yoga so don't think these they are work out jeans, LOL! These jeans are for us moms, the über chic, the party goers, the person down the street from you. Dress them up, dress them down, feel good in your skin. These will feel like a second skin.

I will say that when you buy a pair buy a size one size smaller. I love mine but alas they are too big.
I wish I trusted myself and got one size smaller. Trust me buy one size smaller.

You don't want to put them in the dryer as this burns the lycra in them that gives them the stretch and ultimate comfort. I needed a size 14, hurrah!

I think one of the smartest thing companies do is bring back the old school toys we had growing up. Remember this? I am pining for this. I loved it when I was a kid and think bringing back old school toys is genius.

However this post is about my son and loving the Little People Animal Sounds Farm. With a love for animals and 'knick knack paddy whack give a dog a bone' song my son is entertained with this classic. Do you have this?

It brings a lot of joy to see my son create these little scenario's as he plays, like having the pig go up to the chicken coop and have the farmer pop out of no where saying 'old McDonald says you can't play up here, this where the chickens play' or talking 'oink, oink with baaaa, baaaa, sheep that this comes with"
He'll also break out into song as if he was old Blue eyes himself and sing "Old McDonald'. I wish I had taped it!

Being part of the Fisher Price Mom panel is we get the odd treat. This little number pictured above is the Little People Rumblin Rocks Dump Truck. With a love for all things trucks this is the perfect compliment to our toy collection. With the actual beep, beep that sounds like a garbage truck my son who loves rocks has replaced the light rock that it comes with; with real rocks! It hold up and does the job!

I love the feeling of being a kid again through my son and singing and playing with him. Especially with Fisher Price. I have flash backs of being a child and playing with the kids on my street and all the toys at my dear friends place right across the street from my house. The dear Giesbrechts. Sigh....those were the days.

How Carrying Your Baby Front Facing Out Affects The Spine by Dr. Maya Pande

I'd like to introduce to you Dr.Maya Pande. I had the pleasure of working with Dr.Pande at the Bellies to Baby's Event where I came in and demo'd babycarriers and we discussed different carrying options and dove into the whole FFO debate. I know some of you like to wear your baby facing out and I respect your choice. The argument I always hear is 'baby wants to see what's going on'. That's great, although I suggest your baby would much rather see you, but you can always carry baby on the hip and back and they can see you and everything else perfectly well. Hips need to be properly supported, as it takes 2 years for your child's hips to develop. I hope you'll find the below article written by Dr.Pande informative.
If you look at photo's from all over the world babe's in slings, wraps and Mei Tai's are always in a proper position and are never shown forward facing out. Maybe they know something we don't?

How carrying your baby front facing out affects the spine

By Dr.Maya Pande

I was so pleased and flattered when Erica asked if I would write a blog post on the effect of front facing in (FFI) carriers versus front facing out (FFO) carriers on the spines of both the baby and the mother. I know that there is a lot of debate lately about whether to carry your baby facing in or facing out. This article is focused on sharing information about how the position they’re carried in affects their spine and hips.

I want to touch on two specific complications that may be prevented by carrying baby facing in instead of facing out.
Spinal Curvature: First a tiny anatomy lesson. Don't worry, it's easy!

When a baby is born, their spine is shaped in a "C" curve. As they get stronger and older, their spines develop into the "S" shape that is normal for adults.

If the baby is forward facing out(FFO), the "C" curve is decreased. Why?
Mainly because the middle of their spine is being pressed up against the hard breast bone of the adult who's holding them. This is basically like being backed up against a wall.
This straightens out the "C" curve prematurely putting unnecessary stress on their spine and nervous system. Depending how often and how long a baby is held facing out, this can affect the development of their spine.

Why do you want to avoid this? The spine protects the nervous system which is an extension of the brain. The nervous system is used to transmit information from the brain to the rest of the body and therefore controls all of the body's systems. When the a bone of the spine is misaligned, or compressed or compromised in any way, the nervous system gets stressed and overloaded. This affects the body's overall ability to be healthy.

By carrying a baby facing in with their knees bent and their bum lower than their knees(see picture below, also known as the "M" position), their "C" curve is supported and this allows their spine and nervous system to develop normally.

Hip Dysplasia: Hip dysplasia is basically a deformation of the hip joint which can cause decreased mobility and affect walking. This is more commonly heard of in older adults, but it can also happen to babies. After birth, it takes a few months for the hip joints to naturally stretch out from the fetal position. Until their hips stretch out on their own, it's important that they be supported in that fetal position. Some FFO carriers can force the baby's legs to dangle and hang straight which stretches their hip joints prematurely. This may lead to hip dysplasia or even dislocation, in susceptible individuals.

These two conditions can go undetected because neither of them cause pain in your little one.

Because hip dysplasia can go undetected (and therefore untreated) in infants, sometimes, because of the weakness of that joint, it can result in arthritis of the hip later in life.
Research supports that hip dysplasia can increase the risk of developing arthritis in later years and hip dysplasia is one of the risk factors associated with the onset of hip osteoarthritis.

Mom's Spine: A FFO carry can affect you too! Your mid back is already under a lot of strain because of all the bending over that you're doing now: breastfeeding, bending over a crib or the changing table, picking up your baby. When you carry your baby in a FFO carrier position, the weight of the baby tends to be distributed over your shoulders which can increase your mid back tension and cause pain.
Carrying your baby facing out also may force you to push your hips forward when you walk. This puts more pressure on the already weak pelvic floor. Using a FFI carrier position makes you use core muscles to support yourself, and decrease the pressure placed on the pelvic floor, better allowing it to heal after birth.

Regardless of which position you carry your baby, what do you do if you start to notice a problem
with you(such as back pain, easily tired when walking, can't get comfortable) or the baby (such as excess fidgeting while in carrier, trouble crawling or walking, uneven muscle tone in legs).

1) Carrier: If you are carrying your baby in the FFO position, try switching to forward facing in. Depending on the age and head control you can wear baby on your back or even on the hip.
Erica can help you with that and/or show you other carriers to help ensure you're babywearing comfortably.
This change may be enough to make the difference.

2) Health Care Practitioner: Consult your provider to see if there's something more serious going on.

3) Chiropractic Care: Chiropractic care is gentle enough for little spines and there are chiropractors who focus on infants and children in their practice. They gently assess your baby's spine to find out of there are any misalignment's or constraints to their development. Then they explain what they've found and what can be done. The adjustment is a slight pressure on their back. No popping or cracking at all!

Carrying your baby is important for bonding, and let’s face it, it’s just wonderful. I mean, who doesn’t like to hold a cute, sweet smelling baby? By carrying your baby FFI, you’re supporting his or her spine and hips, providing comfort and getting a good cuddle out of it too!

Why FitMom is Awesome!

I have been enjoying FitMom for about 4 months now. Inches are coming off, energy is much better, I am feeling better about myself and I am surrounded by a team of fabulous fit moms.

This was the only pic I could find of me from last month but my thighs are trimmer and 3 inches are off my waist!

What makes Andrea's classes so awesome is it's like we're of village of moms working together, not against. We inspire each other, we befriend and Andrea is always there to hold and soothe a fussy baby so you can continue working out. Plus you can BABYWEAR in class!

I think what I loved hearing from one of the moms that came in for a free trial class was she liked that she can bring her baby and not worry about a baby sitter. That is what I like as well because as a SAHM with no hired help and with family living in Winnipeg I was stuck!

Charlie actually worked out with my too(picture to come!)! He was doing push ups with me and chasing my around the room as we were running with " knees high!!!" as Andrea yelled out. It was a blast.

So these are just a few things I love about FitMom and I hope I am inspiring to get you fit and to come out to a free class! Will you come? Nutritional Consult with Zen Beginnings ~ Is my thyroid to blame for my stubborn weightgain and not letting me shed the weight?

I have just gone to my first Nutritional Consult over at Zen Beginnings. Sometimes things come to you when you least expect and little blessings occur.

I have been struggling lets just say with my mid section.

In my consult yesterday with Marina Zelenovic, B.Sc, CNP, RNCP, RHOP we went over my health history, my diet or lack of a proper diet. I skip breakfast all the time and have coffee. I also skip starting my day with warm water and lemon. A good way to kick start my liver into a gentle detox.
Cortisol, good 'ol cortisol is my stress hormone also contributes to my mid section.

We discussed so many things but something that I never thought that could be the culprit with all the exercise I do is that my thyroid could be the root cause of it all.
I do FitMom 3 times a week, I walk everywhere, I don't eat that badly when I do. I usually have a couple of bites of what Charlie is having, some wine at night when I am cooking and when I put my feet up. I haven't touched Miss.Vickies in ages. I love Kettle Chips!

I did an iodine test on my wrist just as I left, 3-4 hrs later it was gone. Marina rubbed some iodine on me and usually it should disappear the next day. So because mine vanished relatively quickly it was a sign that I am deficient in iodine which is what is needed to have a functional thyroid that works efficiently.
Bring on the seaweed treats! So to further assess my possible low thyroid function I have to do thermometer testing which begins the second of my period, so we have to wait a week.

So the plan for now is protein shakes in the morning with a variety of fruits, milks, greens, seeds, oils and optional cocoa nibs, spirulina, nori, kelp.....

So tomorrow is my first day starting breakfast with warm water & lemon and then having protein shakes. I'll be snacking on seaweed and add them to my shakes as well.

Lets see if getting my thyroid in check will help melt away this stubborn weight! I hope you'll tune in to my posts as I share my experience with you in getting back in shape which some of all struggle with and we moms tend to put us last. Health is important and I am looking forward to be working with zen beginnings, every city, town should have a little zen of their own.

Tummy Time Help

"My baby hates tummy time!" How many of you have said that recently? Well you are not alone! This is probably the most common comment I hear from parents. So why do they not like it and what can we do?

Why does my baby not like tummy time?

Well, newborn babies often have a difficult time with being on their tummies because it is simply uncomfortable. Pretend for a minute that you are a newborn baby who hasn't quite learned to turn your head from side to side, and lie on your tummy on the floor. How do you feel? Chances are you'll feel squished to the ground with limited vision of table legs and feet....not very exciting is it?

So you might think to yourself, well once my baby learns to move his head and maybe even hold his chest up with his arms, then he should LoOOoove tummy time right?!? Wrong!!!

Babies like to do what is familiar to them, and parents like to do what makes baby happy - that's just our natural instinct! So chances are, if she cried and fussed when we put her on her tummy, we didn't put her in that position often. Instead we might have kept her happy by using modern day holding devices such as: the exersaucer, jumper or bouncer, or maybe even held her up to standing while she tries to stand and balance on her weak little legs. And since that seems to work…because we all look for whatever works to help us get through our day…the cycle continues leaving little opportunity for tummy time.

Babies being in the upright position all the time get to take in a lot of stimuli. Now imagine all of the interesting sights being taken away as you get plopped onto your belly on the floor. Of course you will get some protesting!

What can we do?

So if tummy time is not a favorite, don't worry, there are things that you can do to make it more enjoyable.

#1: Ease him in gently. Start with tummy time for a short period, let's say for 1 min, and slowly increase the intervals. Try to watch for signs of him being all done and pick him up before he starts fussing giving lots of praise and reinforcement for him doing such a great job on his tummy. Babies aim to please! So if he knows you like it, he will keep doing it - in moderation of course.

#2: Get down on the floor with her! Lie on your tummy beside or across from her so that she can see you. Keep her engaged with games such as peek-a-boo or small toys and that will help take her mind off of the dreaded tummy time.

If you have a newborn or a baby not quite holding their head up yet:

- Lie him on your chest while lounging on the couch. It’s great bonding time, and the fact that you are close by makes him feel safe. It will give him his favorite thing to look at too….YOU! If he has reflux, prop yourself up with a pillow behind your back to create an incline.

- Believe it or not, babywearing is also considered tummy time as she is engaging her core muscles while being carried: strengthening her abs, neck, back and leg muscles, and it keeps her off her back to reduce flat head syndrome. Two things checked of your list at once. Bonus! So throw on your favorite Tula and go for a walk!

If your baby can comfortably hold their head up or can sit on their own:

- Put a bolster under his armpits while he is on his tummy. A nursing pillow or a rolled up towel will work as well. This will give him more support and will relieve some of the pressure

- Lie her on top of an exercise ball on her tummy and bounce, rock and sway. Beach balls work great as well. But please pay extra attention to safety!!!

- Itsy Bitsy Yoga classes offer a variety of tummy and back poses for her to strengthen her muscles naturally…you might even get a giggle or two at the same time! Bye-bye tears.

As babies have more practice being on their bellies and gain more control over their bodies, tummy time will get easier and easier, so don't be discouraged. If you have other tummy time tips, please do share....we'd love to hear from you!

I got to put this to good use last month when my son had a tummy bug. He threw up all over me and all over the reclining chair that we were cuddling on! What do you do? What is the best to clean that awful mess? It was 4am in the morning and my husband was using a water, soap and sponge.
Well later that day it was like the gates to heaven opened and we got our Little Green Machine.
I got right to cleaning, adding the detergent, adding water and within 30 seconds I was sucking that puke out of our chair and getting rid of that lovely puke smell. Sorry for all the puke talk but that's what we were using it for!

So now our chair is brand new and deep cleaned! It smells fresh, looks clean and nice again. We can all sit and enjoy our recliner again!

I bring to you a fabulous wrap from France. I love all things French, I had a dream last week that I was in Paris and in my dream I was thinking of JPMBB, lets just say I hope it's a dream come true that I visit France. I usually dream of places and end up being there.

If you've been stalking my Facebook page you'll see all the fabulous chat and inquiries about this special, very special hybrid wrap. There is so much information on JPMBB FAQ page, here I will break it down for you.
Well let me tell you all about it and answer some things you might be thinking as this is something new coming to North America, like when I brought to you Tula.

What makes this wrap so special compared to other stretch like wraps?

Well there's a couple of things as you'll come to know reading through this post. Mainly it's the material. Most stretch wraps are made of cotton. JPMBB is made of cotton(95%) and spandex(5%), and exclusive knit for JPMBB wraps. Although there are many other stretchy wraps, like Cuddlywrap, Moby Wrap, Blue Celery, Sleepywrap none of those styles doesn't even come close to what JPMBB is. Seriously.
It can't even be in the same category. It's denser, stronger, better(in my opinion) and overall awesome.
It's measurements are also the main difference as they are the same as a woven. Most stretchy wraps are 55cm in width where as JPMBB is 70cm like most European wovens.

The JPMBB wrap is the only one that stretches in every direction: vertically, horizontally and diagonally. This makes Pocket Wrap Cross Carry more flexible than with other fabrics.

Because of the unique material that makes JPMBB what is, you will never find them to sag. Baby is held evenly with a harmonious tension, while the lower layers of fabric keep their stretch.

The fact that the stretch comes from the weaving and not the fiber can lead to sagging when the wrap is used frequently with a heavier child. The rails of the wraps are also serged.

You can start wrapping at baby's weight starting at 2kg-15kg so roughly starting from 4.5pds-til up to 30pds.

JPMBB comes in 2 Sizes:

You have the lovely short wrap which is great for summer babywearing and you can use an easy slip knot (see video below for using the short wrap in a slip knot) Shorties are ideal for hip and back carry. You can nurse in a shorty and even in a football hold.
If you're bigger than a size 42/44 (UK 12/14, US 10/12) there are some carries you won't be able to do so the regular wrap might be a better option for you.
The Short Wrap measures 3.5 metres long and is 70cm in width. and comes in 6 colours.
Retails in Canada for $89.99(free shipping within Canada) and is $109.99 to USA(includes $20 for shipping)

The regular wrap measures 5 metres and is also 70cm in width. If you feel it's too long you can easily snip off the extra material. This fits more sizes ;)

Can I breast feed in this wrap?

YES!

Go ANYWHERE when babywearing! It's convenient!

You are hands free as you can see in some of these photo's, life continues and you can go about your daily life with baby safe and secure on you. No need to avoid public transit or rush hour traffic via public transport. Leave the stroller behind and try babywearing for a change.

How hard is it to learn to wrap?

You only need to learn one knot with JPMBB. You can also pop baby in out without having to re-tie. Baby can be in various positions without untying the knot. Front, hip and back.

With JPMBB tutorial video's you are never lost.
You are going to love this wrap. I like to compare it to learning to fold and unfold the stroller. After a few tries you get the hang of it.

Wait did you say I can back carry in this stretchy wrap????!!! Normally you can't.
Well you're right......except this is a JPMBB.

Before you get all up and arms(which has happened) please know that JPMBB nor I would not recommend if it wasn't safe and do-able with this wrap. Do not even attempt to back carry in other stretchy wraps or with the brands mentioned above. Consider yourself warned, they are too short in width and not strong enough.
This is the only hybrid stretch...notice the word hybrid that you can back carry that I am aware of.

Why?
For one, those wraps are thinner and only about 55cm in width. JPMBB is 70cm in width and 5 yards in length. LIKE A WOVEN in measurements. The material in JPMBB is denser.
To further test, I popped my 3 1/2 yr old and 40pd'er in a back carry and he could not get out. I've had a few mom test themselves and they were amazed at how secure, comfortable and overall how awesome it was. JPMBB has extensive classes all over Europe where baby wearing is more of the norm and they work with babywearing educators and midwives. They are serious about education and safety.Again.....
You can't back carry and shouldn't back carry in your other brands of stretchies like Moby, Cuddlywrap, Sleepywrap(boba) etc... Got it? I can't emphasize enough that this wrap is not like a regular stretchy wrap.

Now if your kid is a wiggler, use common sense. Use common sense when you back carry in all carriers whether SSC, ringslings, pods and wraps, etc.... This is nothing like the above mentioned stretchy wraps wraps. I cannot stress this enough.

How serious is JPMBB about the quality of their carriers?Pretty serious.

Well Earth Day has passed but some of us practice it all year.
I was a little surprised at how aware my 3 yr old is to waste. For example while brushing our teeth I am guilty of letting the water run. He could hear the water running and came to the bathroom to tell me, "Don't waste water mommy" and he turned it off. I was pleasantly surprised.

What are some things you do? We also used cloth diapers when he was an infant all the way up to potty training. Don't be turned off by cloth diapers. They rock!
I guess another way to we conserve is we walk a lot! We don't own a car as we live in the city and are within walking distance to a lot of great places, plus we can always hop on public transit. I always have my carrier handy for Charlies tired legs.

I also want to share this book with you called Our House is Round, a Kids book about why Protecting our Earth Matters.

Teach and read with your kids about global connection and environmental cause and effect. This book teaches the whys behind earth conservation in a colorful and positive way that encourages maturity, responsibility, and problem-solving discussion. So a great DVD has recently been released, Jake and the Neverland Pirates, Peter Pan Returns. We've been home last week with a tummy bug and what better way to spend a day on the couch watching your favorite never before seen shows on a DVD?
Of course I'm talking about Charlies favourite show!
It's fun, light and entertaining, my 3 yr old gives it a thumbs up and now he's into Peter Pan, LOL!

But what I especially love about the DVD is the special digital copy. I almost missed it but there's a little sheet with a code where you can download the movie and install it through iTunes so you can have the movie on your iPhone, iPod or any other iTunes portable device. I have it on my iPad right now and love this. I think all DVD's should come with this option. I really like that I have it on my iPad. Really like it, in case I didn't make it clear enough, LOL!
It also is compatible with Windows Media Player.

Noni Says No (Tundra Books, February 2011) is nominated for an Ontario Library Association Blue Spruce Award, which brings recently published Canadian children's picture books to Ontario children ages four to seven, from kindergarten to Grade 2.

Committees of public and school library practitioners select the 10 nominated titles each year, and students must read a minimum of five of those books to be able to vote for their favourite this month.

Noni can do many things: she can give her baby brother his bottle, she can help her mother in the kitchen, and she can even walk over to her friend Susie’s house. But Noni just can’t say “no.” When she was very small, it was easy saying “no” to everybody, but now that she has a best friend, she wants to please. Noni can’t say “no” to her friend, even when it means she has to hand over a precious toy, or when it means agreeing to a hideous haircut, or even giving up her bed at a sleepover. But when Noni finally finds her voice, the consequences are not what she – or the reader – expects.

Heather Hartt-Sussman’s story, complemented by the playful illustrations of Geneviève Côté, is a comforting exploration of friendship and of the importance of trusting one’s own judgment. Many children (as well as many adults) will root for Noni as she learns that you can stand up for yourself and still be a good friend.

What we liked about this book?

Sometimes through books you can teach life lessons because most kids love having a book read to them and you can get through to your child about self improvements they may need to make, teachings of right from wrong and teaching them when to say No.
My son loves saying NO! at the moment but the book was an enjoyable read.

However Noni learns are a hard lesson when she can't say No and to be honest her friend doesn't seem to be a real friend at all.

Noni finally gets the courage to say NO! after her "friend" pulls the last string.

I think even as adults we've all been there. I know I've been the "Yes" girl when I want to say "No" and sometimes it takes that one little lesson to learn to say No and not be a doormat. I liked this book and if you have a little girl that has a hard time saying No!, you might want to read this book for her tonight.

I wanted to bring this book to your attention because I know a little girl who could use this.

Remember that extra bounce your hair had when you were pregnant? Your skin was glowing and you you were beaming. At least my hair, skin and nails were at its best! Thank you estrogen and adrogens and all that other good stuff.

Post partum which no one really tells you about is how dry you become...My nails changed, my skin changed and my hair. Ick. I have never had dry skin like this.
My hair wouldn't colour right, it went from bouncy and wavy to super straight and dry super dry. I assume because my son sucked everything out of me to make him perfect, LOL!
I do joke that he sucked everything out of me and left my body bone dry starving for minerals.

Every product that I've tried never left my hair nourished enough. My hair was my biggest issue as it lacked luster, it was static and just didn't look all that good.

I recently got to review Live-Cleans Professional series. It has changed my hair. Finally, something that works. I actually am in love with Bali Oil series, its restorative and brings shine to my hair. It smells amazing and it's all I use now.

So what did I like about all of this?

The scent is what I first noticed as I opened the bottle. I love the non synthetic smell of the line

Okay, now I get it! Woven wraps are awesome once you've learned how to use them. I am new to woven wraps and you may be as well.
They are comfortable. Sooooooo comfortable. I was never sure on how to use them because to be honest how many sales people know how to use them? I was told by one sales person, "it's too difficult to show, here's a pouch". So, I was left with that impression.

So when you get your Didymos wrap, it comes in a lovely box with a DVD on how to use. It's a fabulous DVD and takes through knot methods and you can rewind and watch, rewind and watch before practicing with baby in it. Also Barbara from Birdies Room is very helpful.

So what are some the advantages of a Didymos wrap? Here's a few examples:

Your hands are free(yes I know like most baby carriers)
Babies who are carried regularly do not develop fear of loss, they cry less and become independent earlier.
The sling is suitable for all sizes and you can carry your baby from birth to the age of three years. I have carried my 3 1/2 yr old in a back carry.
The wraparound sling is lightweight and handy,and, when not needed, it folds and fits easily in a bag.
DIDYMOS- slings are made from pure organic cotton and the colours are free fom heavy metals.

What I like about Didymos?

The ease in using them. I found the DVD very helpful.
So COMFORTABLE!
You don't have to wash it right away necessarily. If you want it softer than go for it but I loved the feel of it and strength of the wrap. Who new a piece of cloth could be so amazing for babywearing. I am new to wrapping and love it.
The use only 100% organic cotton
I had the Jacquard in Waves Elder which is fine, elastic and soft for a woven.
Practice, practice, practice. With anything new, it can take a little time or a long time to get it right.
Proper support all the way around. For me and my son.
Can be used year round
Can easily breast feed in it
Various tying methods so you never get bored with the same old, same old and grow with your baby's needs.
Safe & magical. I love wrapping and wish I started earlier.
I really liked the support on the Didymos site as well, such as pictures of their tying methods. I like the company a lot. Friendly and good energy.
They have a Free App that is super helpful and takes you through the steps of tying methods and I downloaded it to my iPad.
Fits all sizes, from petite to plus size as they come in different measurements.

What I didn't like?

Too be honest I can't find anything to say. For some it's the learning curve. For me not so much. I loved practicing and feeling the support of the wrap and here's my son using it as a blanket!

BHT? What the heck is it?

I recently popped over to my neighborhood grocery store. I was going to get Rice Crispies Brown Rice because it's made it whole grains.
I was going to make Rice Crispy Cakes with pumpkin seeds, cranberries, dried apricot(sulphate free & organic) and with some shredded coconut.

As I was looking at the cereal box, I noticed an ingredient I wasn't aware of.

BHT

Well, if you read my past post on TBHQ(whuch has been removed from the crackers so I've seen), I had to see what BHT was and of course, it's a food preservative.

BHT: Butylated hydroxytoluene

Reading on wikipedia I see a couple of things that catch my attention, mainly this one, however it hasn't been brought to the attention since the 1970's and some brands completely eliminated it:

European and U.S. regulations allow small percentages to be used as a food additive, but that is not without controversy as there are claimed links to child hyperactivity as well as to cancer.

Hmmmmm......something I don't want in my kids cereal. I mean, the commercials for Rice Crispies always show moms, kids around a table in black and white and nothing makes them happier than hearing, snap, crackle, pop.

However than there's this, if used with Vitamin C and Lysine(:

Conversely, BHT is advocated as a diet supplement and antiviral useful against herpes family viruses

But then, it can also be used for:

While there may be some dispute in BHT's use in the human diet, the chemical is widely used in industry wherever oxidation in fluids (e.g. fuel, oil) and other materials must be treated, and free radicals must be kept in-check.

Apparently it's also used in cosmetics along with BHA. BHT has been flagged and is under review with Canada's Chemical's Management Plan.

Anyways, do your own research but I just wanted to share this with you. Will I be picking up a box of Rice Crispies anytime soon? Probably not. Added for product freshness or not.

I'm kinda disappointed because I was looking forward to making the squares.
