Fred and George's Rescue Vests

When Fred and George Weasley help pilot the car that rescues Harry from the Dursley residence, they are wearing wonderfully striped knitted vests. Unfortunately for knitters, the pair are still very much background characters, and so there aren't many clear screen caps of the vests, nor is there a pattern.

What is clear, is that the vests are striped, and a combination of tans, olives, and browns. the ribbing at the sleeves, neck, and waist is olive, and the stripes within the vest itself appear to be knit with a seed stitch texture.

As I said, there's no pattern written for this vest as of yet, but any men's vest pattern could be used, and the strip pattern worked over it to give the look.

Molly Weasley's Self-Knitting Blanket

Molly Weasley's self-knitting blanket is possibly my favorite knitted item in all of the Harry Potter movies. I've wished more than once to be able to charm my own needles into whipping up projects while I sleep, I assure you! And while I've yet to master this skill, making a blanket like this might just make up for it.

While no pattern exists (yet) for Molly's Blanket, the pattern looks easy enough to replicate with slipped stitches. Simply cast on your desired number of stitches and work in stockinette, slipping every other stitch on the row WHILE you're changing colors. That will carry the previous color up to the next row without having to do any stranded color work. What a great way to use up leftover bits!

It seems silly, but we are already done documenting the knitted items in Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone! It has been well documented that the costume department didn't start using knits more liberally until a few movies in, and that is evident by their distinct lack of presence early on.

Starting Monday, I'll document the knitted items in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, and I'm so excited for this! The movie starts off almost immediately with hand knits, and while there still aren't many featured while the students are at Hogwarts, their time spent away from school is practically littered with hand knit items!

As always, if you know of a hand knit item I have missed during documenting these movies, please let me know via e-mail (shemakeshats-at-gmail-dot-com). I definitely want to have all hand knit items accounted for!

Draco Malfoy Vist To Hagrid's Sweater, Sorcerer's Stone

During their visit to Hagrid's hut, Harry, Ron, and Hermione are caught by Draco, who then tells Professor McGonagall of their late night activities. While Draco is punished as well, to his chagrin, the entire evening is spent in a knitted turtleneck sweater.

Draco's grey turtleneck sweater is similar to that worn by Oliver Wood while he teaches Harry the rules of Quidditch, but features a smaller rib pattern, and looks to use a thinner weight yarn. No pattern currently exists for this specific sweater, but a quick Ravelry search should yield enough similar sweaters to give you a choice.

Ron Weasley Visit To Hagrid Sweater, Sorcerer's Stone

As they are figuring out just how dangerous Hogwarts can truly be, Harry, Ron, and Hermione take a visit to Hagrid's hut, seeking answers to questions about the three-headed dog they encountered. You can see Harry wearing his green cabled Christmas sweater, and you can't see if Hermione is wearing a sweater, but you can also see Ron's striped sweater.

While there's no way to tell if the sleeves of Ron's crew neck navy blue sweater contain grey stripes like the body, it is clear he is wearing a sweater. I love simple sweaters like this on men and boys - just a few stripes for a bit of knitter interest, while still neutral enough you're almost guaranteed the recipient will wear it regularly.

Ron's striped sweater can be made using your favorite crew neck sweater pattern, with the main body navy blue and a bit of grey stripe for interest.

Ron Weasley Christmas Sweater, Sorcerer's Stone

During Harry's first Christmas at Hogwarts, we're introduced to the Weasley Chirstmas sweater, a tradition of Molly's. Each of her children receives a tweedy sweater with their first initial on it each year. Above you can see Ron's sweater, dark red with a gold R.

Many patterns have been written for this sweater, so I've included a few below.

Harry's Wizard's Chess Sweater from Sorcerer's Stone

During Harry's first Christmas spent at Hogwarts, Ron teaches him to play Wizard's Chess. While this skill will come in handy later in the movie, I fell in love with Harry's green cabled sweater - the exact same sweater as the one he wears when he encounters the Mirror of Erisad and also meets Voldemort for the first time!

Harry Potter's Red Cabled Sweater from Sorcerer's Stone

Worn several times in The Sorcerer's Stone, Harry's red cabled sweater is just about perfection. Worn both when he encounters the Mirror of Erisad, and also when he fights Voldemort the first time, this red cabled sweater sees much wear and tear, obviously loved dearly.

A pattern for this sweater was written out in the book Charmed Knits, and is sized to fit a wide variety of people.

House Sweaters

Making their debut in the first movie, you can see the students wearing House Sweaters under their robes, which they will wear throughout their time at Hogwarts. These grey stockinette sweaters have house colors accenting the v-neck and the waist ribbing, and show off your favorite house with subtlety and perfection.

As with the House Scarves, many people have written patterns for this sweater - I'm sharing a few favorites here.

While the Hogwarts House Scarves change after the first two years, these tend to be the scarves people make when they make House Scarves for costumes and presents. Because of this, there is also a wide variety of both knit and crochet patterns you can use to make your very own House Scarf.

Hermione's Gloves, Sorcerer's Stone

While watching the Quidditch match between Gryffindor and Slytherin, Hermione wears her first hand knit items - a house scarf (featured tomorrow) and her hand knit gloves.These simple grey gloves are the epitome of Hermione wear - completely functional, perfectly neutral so as to be worn every day, and without frill and fuss.

To make a pair of gloves like Hermione's, any glove pattern may be used. I like to imagine these are gloves Hermione's mother made for her and sent in her trunk so she'd have something of home and the Muggle world with her as she learned magic.

Quidditch Sweaters

Who knew how hard it would be to get a still shot of the Quidditch sweaters worn in The Sorcerer's Stone?! After much searching, this is the best screen capture I could find, as most were blurry due to Quidditch action.

Lack of photos aside, the Quidditch sweater is another perfect everyday sweater featured in the Harry Potter movies. All-over ribbing and block striping set this sweater apart, while the construction and fit mean it can be worn by both men and women.

Several patterns for this sweater exist, in both DK and worsted weight.

Most people, if they've made this sweater, have used the Charmed Knits pattern, but there are two others available for those looking for a different version. You can also find several patterns for mini sweaters modeled after this sweater, but I have not linked to them.

Oliver Wood Quidditch Practice Sweater, Sorcerer's Stone

While Oliver Wood is not featured prominently in the movies, we knitters are treated to several hand knit sweaters modeled by the young Quidditch player in the first film. The first sweater worn by Wood is the simple brown turtleneck he wears while teaching Harry to play Quidditch.

Seamed sleeves and a simple wide rib make this sweater ideal for everyday wizarding wear, and perfect for those of us Muggles who love to emulate wizarding fashion. While no "official" Potter approved pattern exists for this sweater, I found a pattern that would be perfect for whipping up a brown sweater just like Oliver's.

Harry Potter Quidditch Practice Sweater, Sorcerer's Stone

The first time we see Harry in hand knits of any kind is the sweater he wears when Oliver Wood begins to teach him about Quidditch. Harry's navy blue sweater features a large cable motif running from each shoulder down the length of the sweater both front and back, as well as the same cable motif on each sewn in sleeve. Separating the cable motifs is a section of seed stitch on both the front and back center sections of the sweater.

There is no "official" pattern for this sweater, which is a surprise to me. Patterns exist for other sweaters worn in this first movie, and this sort of cable and seed stitch idea seems like one a pattern writer would jump on. I'm hoping someone will decide to write this pattern up, and then I can include it here!

Fred and George Weasley King's Cross Sweaters, Sorcerer's Stone

We meet Fred and George in dark grey/blue mock turtleneck sweaters. While definitely not the last time the twins will dress alike (and use it to their advantage), it is our first time seeing them, together or apart, and we are met not with their sameness, but their trickster nature.

The sweaters the boys wear have raglan sleeves and a mock turtleneck, making them similar to - although not identical to - the traditional "Weasley sweater" all of Molly's children will wear time and again in the series.

While I didn't find a pattern specific to the twins' sweaters, I did find three sweaters whose construction is so similar as to be used easily for these sweaters.

Percy's King's Cross Station Sweater, Sorcerer's Stone

Percy's sweater is only seen in a few blurry shots, as we don't truly meet Percy until later in the series. A simple v-neck pullover with sewn on sleeves, the sweater appears to be knit from marled brown yarn, and fits a bit baggy - I'm assuming it is either a hand-me-down from one of the older Weasley boys, or it was made large to fit Percy for the entire year, if not longer.

While no pattern can be found for this specific sweater, because it is a more generic v-neck sweater, any pattern can be used to achieve this look.

Ginny's King's Cross Station Sweater, Sorcerer's Stone

While we only see Ginny in these moments at King's Cross in The Sorcerer's Stone, Ginny is wearing a Molly-made sweater just like most of her brothers. Ginny's cardigan appears to be made in a few asymmetrical color blocked pieces that are sewn together, giving the true feel of a "Molly Sweater".

I couldn't find a pattern for this sweater, but the pieced look wouldn't be hard to replicate on any cardigan pattern.

Molly Weasley's King's Cross Hat, Sorcerer's Stone

Along with wearing her fair isle cardigan in the first King's Cross meeting, Molly Weasley also wears a dark green cabled beret. It's hard to find a good screen capture of just the hat, and these are the best of the bunch.

You can tell from the first shot the hat has not only cables, but also several garter stitch sections within each cable, making the work intricate and fun. So many of the items attributed to Molly Weasley (or implied as having been made by her) feature distinct and difficult color work, but this hat features a more intricate stitch pattern instead. It is one of the few single-color items worn by Molly (or knitted by Molly) in the series of movies.

Molly Weasley's King's Cross Sweater, Sorcerer's Stone

The first time Harry meets Molly Weasley, she is wearing this amazing fair isle cardigan. From these first scenes, Molly's knit wear speaks to her desire to use every scrap, her love of color, and especially her fondness for the handmade.

A Ravelry search left me with no links to a pattern for this exact sweater,but the construction appears to be a basic seamed cardigan with an afterthought button band.

Harry Meets The Weasleys

Hand knit items aren't introduced to the Harry Potter world until Harry is at King's Cross Station, attempting to find Platform 9 3/4. It is there he sees the Weasleys for the first time, decked out in hand knits and headed for the train.

I love that the costume department brought hand knits into the movie with the Weasleys. This family has always represented comfort and home to Harry, much as knitted items do the very same for those of us who knit them. And so it is no surprise that as Harry meets the people who will become his emotional family, we are visually treated to the comfort of hand knits for the first time.

Over the next week or so, I'll share the sweaters and hats shown in the King's Cross scene, as worn by the Weasleys, and hope to find some patterns as well!

Welcome to Harry Potter Knits, my quest to document every knitted item in the Harry Potter movies.

A hat knitter by trade (and passion), I've knit my way through many of the hats worn by the characters in the Harry Potter movies over the years. However, there are quite literally hundreds (maybe thousands?) of other knitted items featured on the characters in the movies.

Over the years knitters and crocheters alike have written patterns that pay homage to these knitted items, and I hope to link to as many of these patterns as possible as I share each knitted item.

The plan? To work my way through screen captures from each of the movies, sharing knitted (and crocheted!) items one post at a time. I will categorize by movie, character, and more as I see fit, and will share as many photos as I can find of each item.

As I share each item, I will share links to patterns made in honor of that item (where patterns exist). When I find I have missed a pattern, I will go back and edit the original post to reflect the patterns, and will most likely write a new post for this new addition.

This is most definitely a labor of love, and so I cannot promise to get everything up super fast, but I will work at it one day at a time. My current plan is to start with the first movie and simply work my way forwards.
