You change everything.

A couple of years ago we made a big change in our businesses when we realized why we were burning out every year or two. Sadly, it was because of me and my tendency to make what we’re doing all about me. As a photographer I was brought up in a celebrity driven system where we were all looking to be the cool kid on the block and I went after that with some serious vigor. Putting my face on everything - my website, my business card and even on the side of our tour bus. My head was huge. Literally and figuratively.

One day I was talking with my assistant, who had been living at the house for 3 months, and I realized that she hadn’t taken a shower yet! I was freaking out and so confused! I asked her what she had been doing for the past 3 months and she said,

“I’ve been meaning to ask you how to work the shower in the apt (it’s an old funky shower) but whenever I come in the house to work we just talk about you the whole time."

Wow. The truth hurts sometimes.

It took years and dozens, probably hundreds, of other people saying something similar to me before I even started to accept that they were right and begin to make a change. It’s not a pretty thing when decades of self-focus, self-preservation, self obsession rears its ugly head.

That summer our business completely tanked. We ran out of money and we had to lay off 1/4 of our crew which was probably the hardest thing I’ve ever had to do. My girlfriend broke up with me and my friends didn’t really want to be around me. My identity was rocked and I was wrecked. Depressed beyond belief and directionless.

Thankfully this isn’t the end of the story. One of the beautiful things about our lives is that we can change and I’m trying to change these tendencies in my own life and with our business, Shoot & Share, we are trying to help create a healthy culture in this industry. A culture that isn’t focused on itself but one that is focused on helping and serving others. In order to do this we’ve created the Shoot & Share Group, as well as the private Shareholders group which is a place for photographers wanting to take the next step. We also want to point you towards other wonderful groups out there like The Rising Tide Society, Pursuit 31, Delight. In these communities we can both support and challenge each other and work together to create a culture of leaders who free people to be the lovecats we are all meant to be.

A desire to prove myself and use my gifts to create freedom for my life trapped me and limited me because my life was still all about me. It's a pretty pathetic way to live and I'm still recovering from a decade (or more) of it.
Liberating others and using the gifts we've been given to serve those who need them is true freedom.

I'm going through a remarkable apprenticeship program with Jeremie Kubicek and one of the first things they walked us through was our need for self awareness and emotional intelligence. Discovering our true "nature" and understanding our strengths and weaknesses and how the "nurturing" we've had has affected us and then choosing to change our actions and change our reality.
My nature as an introverted feeler affects me greatly and affects the people around me. I take things really personally and my nature actually isn't to challenge people but I've created high stress environments (in high stress our natural tendencies flip) in order to bring challenge. This is not good and has caused me to function passive aggressively and instead of liberating those around me I've crushed them. I'm working hard to change this and step one is knowing myself.
