I Actually Can Wait

Over the last week or so as my family and I have been getting our house back into order, while also getting back into a routine after the holidays. It wasn't too painful of a process; this is the beginning of the second week the kids are back into school, my husband is back to his regular work schedule, and I have gotten back into my normal routine taking care of the house, kids, and making time for my little business as well.

However, as I was getting rid of some of my kids' old clothes and toys (which I recommend next time I do before Christmas) I found myself having a moment. It was a small moment; nevertheless, I had it and it kind of took me by surprise.

A sense of sadness came over me as I looked over all of the clothes and items my kids had outgrown, especially because hubby and I am done having kids. The toys they now consider "baby toys" will be no more; the cute little outfits, onesies, bottles, and such are all things I will never have to buy for my own children again. And just not too long ago, when they were in their baby stages, I couldn't wait until they got just a bit older. With 2 toddlers and a newborn, I was the beyond tired, stressed out, sleepless mom where I felt like my whole world consisted of changing diapers and breastfeeding, and I was going stir crazy. I couldn't wait until they just got old enough to do things on there own. Yet now I realize, I actually could have waited because time went by within a blink of an eye.

Just within a year they have changed and developed so much right before my eyes. I started reminiscing of all three of them in their baby and toddler stages, and I look at my last one...Jr...and he will be 4 in just a couple of months when I enroll him in school this year. And then thats it... all 3 of my kids will be in school. Of course that gives me time to work on my home business and do other things for myself, but I'm so used to being "mom" first all day, everyday, it will be a huge adjustment on my end to not have these little people around me ALL the time.

So you remember this thing called balance I am trying to accomplish for myself? It will definitely include embracing the moment more often and just enjoying the many blessings that my family and I have. I know it sounds cliche, but I really do mean that. As I watch my kids get older and I embrace the different stages of motherhood, I have to remember they are only young once.

Sure there are plenty of days where they will drive me up a wall and I will still go crazy. But one day before I know it, they will leave the nest and the house will be completely quiet. As my kids at this very moment are bickering and whining at one another right now, the thought of a quiet house is music to my ears....but I can wait for that :)

Her Signature Flower

As my children get older, it amazes me how they each so quickly develop into their own personalities. Sometimes I see a lot of myself in them, sometimes my husband, and sometimes other members of our families I see shine through these little people.

My oldest daughter used to be the "girly girl" type when she was a toddler. She loved to play dress up and no matter where we were going or what we were doing, she just had to wear dresses and skirts. She spent most of her time playing with her dolls and having pretend tea parties, and just doing what most little girls love to do. Now that she is 7, apparently she is "too old" for a lot of these things as she so puts it, and I see now she has a creative side as I do that wants to shine through. Her fun time now consists of reading books, coloring, writing, and playing with her jewelry kits. It's amazing how much she has changed just in the past couple of years.

My son is still developing into his own personality, learning how to have a sense of self. A lot of his time is spent around me and his sisters, and I am sure as he starts preschool later on this year that will help in the process. Though when I think of Jr, he is very meticulous and organized. He loves doing puzzles, taking things apart, and putting them back together. Not mention, I swear this boy has a photographic memory!

Now as for my middle daughter, she has surprised me the most out of all 3. As a baby, she was the most challenging to handle. She was what many would term "spirited," while being very stubborn, loud, and just...well...difficult. Yet at the age of 5, she has blossomed into this sweet little girl who loves to help, do chores around the house, help cook, and really be a girly girl as well. Though she is still very stubborn, she is a very loving child that thrives on affection.

I thought Baby Girl was a girly girl, but nothing in comparison to Little One. She in the true sense acts like a "diva." Everywhere we go she has to take her purse, with her favorite puppy tucked in. Her favorite color is pink and she wears some form of it every single day, along with a flower barrette. Yes..... everyday, all day Little One has to wear a flower in her hair. It started earlier this year when I started putting them in her hair with her summer outfits, but ever since then she has to have one in her hair.....and she never wants to take them out. If I do, I find her putting one in her hair before bedtime to match her pajamas, or when she is trying to brush it just because she loves to do hair. Now I can't imagine looking at my little one, without her signature flower. Already she does something that is just purely part of her personality; too adorable for words.

Though I am sure she will of course change and go through many phases (hey next year for all I know she may despise putting any type of barrettes in her hair like her sister) but its nice to stop and really examine each stage my children go through. When I'm in the craft store, I immediately think of my oldest daughter and how much she would enjoy using items I find; when I come across a puzzle, I think of my son and how he will sit for hours (at the age of 3) to get it done; and when I see a flower pretty in pink, I think of my Little One and how it was part of her signature look at the age of 5.

Balance

~~Balance~~. This seems to be a tough thing for me as a mom and wife to try and get a good handle on lately. As soon as I think I have everything under control, this little thing called life creeps on me and reminds me that things don't always go as planned. And the funny thing is, when I look back on my short-lived life as an adult, I realize I am the person I am today through the many situations that were 'unplanned' or even out of balance. Go figure, right? Yet to keep my sanity, I still strive to find a balance that works for me.

Before you start wondering where I am going with this, know that this post is inspired with the upcoming new year which brings with it a new beginning; a fresh start. Most people have New Years resolutions; usually to loose weight, eat healthier, get finances in order; something we all should be doing, but usually have a hard time with. A lot of people do a sort of year in review, examining their life in the course of the past 12 months while looking forward to what they would do differently, or what they can do to better themselves. Yet they find it difficult to actually stick to these resolutions come February, or heck the second week of January, and yes I am guilty of it myself. Sometimes I wonder why that is.

So this year, after really examining myself, looking at my beautiful babies and my loving husband, I realize that even though many things this year did not go as planned (as well as many things that did), I am so very happy and thankful for all the moments- good and bad. I take pride in my accomplishments- getting my degree, starting a business from home, starting my blog, watching my little girl go to preschool for the first time, celebrating another year of marriage, as well as others and I wouldn't change a thing. Don't get me wrong, although I know life is sure to take everyone for a spin sometimes, I do believe it is still important to make plans, goals, and have aspirations for your future. Its important to know where you're going even if you have to take a different path than expected. However, sometimes its important to sit back and really appreciate what God and life has given you, focus on what you have learned from mistakes and experiences, and be proud of your accomplishments.

It is also just as important to find balance in your life, especially with the many different hats one can wear on a daily basis, and that is where my focus will stand for the coming new year. It's won't be easy, but I want to learn how to find that balance between being just me, mom, wife, friend, child of God, entrepreneur, and blogger. It's an ongoing and learning process I know, but I intend to welcome it with open arms and have my priorities straight so I don't neglect the things that matter the most to me, which includes me! So instead of looking at the things that that I could have done better, or things that went unplanned that I could try again for next year, I'm going to focus on continuing to balance the life that was so gracefully given to me, and embrace all the experiences that are to come. I am sure there will be days where I still want to pull my hair out, but I look forward in sharing my thoughts and experiences with all of you ;)

I Love the Holidays!

There is something about the holidays that always puts me in this buoyant, cheerful, happy-go-lucky, I feel like I'm a kid again, type of mood (which are what the holidays are supposed to do right?). I absolutely love the holidays, and part of the reason for that is growing up my parents were always the same way; they really got into the spirit. Whether times were tough or not, my parents always made sure me and my younger brother understood the true meaning behind Christmas, caring for those less fortunate, and giving to others. Yet they were also able to share with us an abundance of wonderful activities, surrounded us with loving family, and had, from what I will always remember, some really magical Christmas times. Those memories will last me a lifetime and I want the same for my kids as well.

What's amazing to me is, even though I want and try to make the holidays a special time of year for my kids, I still feel like a kid a heart myself when October rolls around. (Yea it starts early for me). As soon as the stores are stocking their shelves with Christmas decor right before Halloween has had a chance to be here and gone, a sense of cheerfulness completely washes over me. I get excited about decorating, thinking of arts and crafts, baking cookies, watching Christmas classics, drinking rum apple cider, and so many other things that the holiday season brings.

This year, that cheerfulness did hit me late. It wasn't until Thanksgiving Day when my husband and I went out to get lights to put on the house that I really started to get into that holiday spirit. Not sure why. It may be because I have been so occupied in starting my online boutique that time has just zipped by in a flash, leaving me in the dust a bit. Nevertheless, I've been my happy cheerful self lately even when life has a way of throwing you for a loop (like both of our cars deciding to go out of commission at the same time). I'm still over here smiling.

It makes me wonder who gets more excited when the holidays roll around; me or the kids?! Today I found myself watching Santa Claus is Coming to Town by myself and loving it, as my kids strolled in and out the living room occupied with something else. When it was time to decorate our tree last week, their attention span deemed short, so I ended up finishing the tree on my own. Traditional red, green, and gold....

And though the kids are excited to be going to Navy Pier's Winter Wonderfest next week, and visiting Santa; they really are just anticipating Christmas Day! We could fast forward right to December 25th, and they would be all good. Though to be fair, they do enjoy baking cookies and doing crafts (which I will be sharing in my next few posts) and they have a ball playing in the snow. They were so excited the night before I told them they would see snow the next morning..... they couldn't wait to get outside.

That's okay though, even if I am the one to get more excited about the holiday season, I know these memories will last my kids a lifetime regardless, and I hope the start of our own family traditions will continue on.

I'm Baaack!

Yes, I know it has been awhile since I have written a post. I haven't completely forgotten about my blog or all of my wonderful followers, I just have been so incredibly busy that I just haven't had the time to stop and gather my thoughts, let alone actually sit and write them down.

If you haven't noticed, I have added an extra tab on my list of pages.....La Bella Creations....yes, this has been what has been consuming any of what little extra time I have lately. I decided to jump faithfully with both feet and begin the process of starting my own online boutique. I have even experienced for the first time being a vendor at an arts and crafts event, thanks to my good friend over at Sassy Mahogany Wife. It was a fun experience and I hope to do more events like that in the future. I have so many ideas, plans, goals for what I want to do that its overwhelming, but I love it, and I am very excited about my future endeavors.

At the same time its a little nerve wracking because being a stay at home mom to 3, already had me busy enough. With one child who is often sick due to allergies and asthma, one child who a few doctors have labeled "spirited" and the other with the energy of a typical 3 year old, I really had my hands full. This is not even to mention running a household and keeping up with everyone's busy schedules. Now you add starting a home business in the mix, my once seemingly organized chaos has just become plain disarrengment. That is okay though, I know in the end everything will be all worth it.

I have so much to catch up on with my readers, I have no clue on where to begin, and with the holidays now here in full stride, there is so much to write about. However, I plan on easing back into my blogging routine, writing about my crazy life as a mom and inspiring entrepreneur; along with everything in between over the coming days-getting my groove back so to speak. I have some catching up to do with all you lovely people as well.

So I know you all are dying to see what creations I have been working on lately. Right now I've been making tutus and tutu dresses, which has been my main focus. However I have a passion in creating, and will soon be adding other items for not only girls, but boys as well (we all know how hard it is to find just about anything for our sons) along with party favors, and other fun decorations; just a variety of things.....I have it all worked out on paper :) I have big plans for the New Year, but here is a sneak peak:

Since my girls have started back to school this fall, I have had to stop and evaluate the different changes our family is experiencing just because the kids are growing...... getting older......The now have their own separate activities, and really are just going through the next phase in their lives. I have not only been evaluating how my kids are changing, but evaluating myself as well. We all are past the breastfeeding, diaper changing, baby wearing stage, and are now in a phase where I have to accept my little one's are growing up, developing their own personalities, and becoming more independent day by day.

And truth is, it makes me happy, proud, nervous, and even more overwhelmed all at the same time. A part of me wishes my kids were still babies. In comparison to now, life just a couple of years ago in the realm of motherhood was less complicated.....simple. Don't get me wrong, the long sleepless nights and feeling like my kids were attached to me at the hip all day was very tiring. But now that they can talk, run around, ask questions with their inquisitive little minds, and drive me up a wall with their constant bickering, my day is full of loudness and chaos; making me tired mentally now too. I'm not sure when it happened, but it seems like overnight my adorable babies who needed mommy for just about everything seemed to grow up into these little people ready to explore the world and everything in it.

So as they adjust and they grow, I realize I do too. And even though my kids are not even close to being in that stage where they are becoming completely dependent of me, they do develop into their own selves a little bit more each day. I find myself now in a position to be able to focus more on my own personal goals and aspirations. Not completely, but enough to wonder what my next step will be as the kids get older. I have so much I would love to do, and so much I would love to focus on, but I'm wondering how I will manage trying to handle it all.

Lately I have been focused on becoming an entrepreneur so that I can work from home; starting an online boutique, really focusing on my blog, and aspiring to even do some event planning. I love doing crafty things, planning parties....and just creating. I've loved it even when I was a kid. I don't mind sitting through tedious hours creating something I know will be great, especially if it is for someone else, and it will be unique. Anyone who knows me, knows I am a very determined person and will put my mind to any task and complete it above and beyond what is required or expected. No matter what it is. I am a perfectionist, and that can be my downfall at times, but my motivation to always do better helps keep me going.

So as the kids get older and change, I find myself taking a good look at myself, and who I am, who I would like to become, and what I would like to do. At times my whole existence seems like it is just strictly to be a mother. That is not necessarily a bad thing, but I never envisioned that most of my life I would be a stay at home mom, as much as I have loved it so far. I always felt it was important to realize that even though as a mother and wife I wear many different hats, that doesn't change who I am as a person....as a woman. Sure things may get put on hold, pushed aside, and many many times my needs even come last. However one day my kids are going to grow up and eventually leave the nest....and then what? Of course there is some time before that actually happens, but I know as a family we will go through many changes before then, individually and as a unit, and sometimes its nice to just take a step back and prepare for these changes.

It's actually a nerve-wrecking thought for me to try and start a business from home. I am not sure how I am going to separate my work from home life then. I am just adding chaos on top of chaos....but I really feel like I'm ready for it, and just pray God gives me the strength to get through it all without going completely insane. It'll be a change; an adjustment...but change....change is good....right?

Dominick's Just for U Program Review and Giveaway!

Recently I was given the opportunity to try out a fabulous new electronic savings program through Dominick's grocery chain called Just For U. Dominick's is looking for honest feedback on this new program, which provides customers with additional personalized electronic discounts (in other words electronic coupons) on their Fresh Value's store card. Who doesn't like a little extra savings right?

In order to sign up for this program, you must first obtain a Fresh Values card which you can get in the store for free. Once you have one, you can register your card number online for the program in about 2 minutes... and viola you're finished! You can then begin adding your personalized savings to your card. A great thing about this program is a lot of these coupons and additional savings are not only for one time use. You can use them again and again until the expiration date. They can also be combined with manufacture coupons as well for additional savings.

When I first signed up, the first thing I did was add my savings for my free carton of eggs. I then went through all of the coupons and personalized deals and added the additional savings to my card. Some of the great savings I was able to take advantage of was $1.50 Quaker Oatmeal Squares cereal (my kids love, love, love this cereal), $1.99 for a 6 pack of bottled Coca Cola, bananas for .44 cent a pound, and $2.99 for a gallon of Minute Maid Orange Juice, just to name a few.

Once, I went shopping, throughout the store I was able to find additional savings on some of their products, that were marked down for a quick sale. With 3 kids....food around here doesn't last very long anyway. So I felt I did a pretty good job once I was done shopping. I haven't shopped at Dominick's often as their prices are a bit high for our budget, but I think with the additional savings, I may be stopping in a bit more for a few things. The Dominick's store I went to, was very nice, clean, had fresh produce and wonderful friendly staff. I have to admit, I am horrible at clipping coupons, as I am a busy mommy, so I think this is a wonderful program.

Time 4 Learning Review

My girls got a chance to play on this wonderful interactive site for children, called Time 4 Learning. They absolutely loved it!

So what exactly is Time 4 Learning, do you ask? Well I'm here to tell you!

Time 4 Learning is an online curriculum for children in Pre-K through 8th grade. These lessons can be used as a homeschool curriculum, or can even be used to supplement additional learning to any current curriculum. The site has lessons that range from subjects such as math, science, language arts, science and social studies. They even have a learn to read program, which I found very useful for my little preschooler, as she is learning all of her letters and their sounds. The lessons are fun, full of color and animation, and include unit assessments along with printable worksheets for additional reinforcement. Tips and teaching tools for parents are included, along with an entire forum dedicated just for the parents to ask questions, get advice, and engage in discussions. This site has everything you need to help your child learn and excel.

I think Time 4 Learning is a great site. The lessons are fun and interactive for children, so they are not looking at the lessons as "work" as they are enjoying learning! My oldest daughter, baby girl, said she has used Time 4 Learning before at school during computer time and was so happy to come home from school some days and log in for even more lessons. She saw the lessons as games, not even realizing she was learning even more! She has been struggling with math facts a little bit, and needed some extra practice at home, and within the month we have been using Time 4 Learning, I saw a big improvement when she would bring home her math work from school.

What was also a big plus for me, was that I could log in separately and view her progress and see exactly what she was doing on the site. I didn't have to hover over her (like I sometimes I have to do when she's doing homework from school) which I think was a plus on her end too.

To find out more, visit Time 4 Learning to see if this is a program you would like to add to your child's curriculum or use if you are homeschooling. Membership is $19.95 for the first child, and $14.95 per additional child after that. I think it is an excellent program for children, especially those that are homeschooled and I would definitely be willing to pay for membership if my children were homeschooled. As supplemental help, the price is a bit much for us monthly, but it really is an excellent program.

I know I have left it unlocked, and even open at times since you were born, because I was afraid some horrible tragedy might occur while I was in there, but it's been 10 years and I want some PRIVACY.

Do not ask me how long I will be. I will come out when I am done.

Do not bring the phone to the bathroom door.

Do not go running back to the phone yelling: "She's in the BATHROOM!"

Do not begin to fight as soon as I go in.

Do not stick your little fingers under the door and wiggle them. This was only funny when you were two.

Do not slide pennies, Legos, or notes under the door. Even when you were
two, this got a little tiresome.

When to Intervene

From time to time I hear from other moms of how they get irritated sometimes with unwanted parenting advice from family, friends, and even strangers. And I don't mean someone like your mom that gives loving advice when you ask for it, or see you making obvious mistakes; I mean those that feel that they have to add their two cents to just about any situation because they think they know everything....yes that unwanted parenting advice. I am sure we all have gotten some at one point, and though that can be irritating, sometimes actual advice or flat out intervention is needed when it isn't asked for.

Have you, yourself ever found yourself in a situation where you feel like you needed to speak up and say something without crossing any boundaries? What exactly are those boundaries?

Not too long ago I had ran to the grocery store to pick up an ingredient I needed for dinner. The kids were home with their dad, so I was alone. As I was looking on the shelves to find what I was looking for, I was absolutely shocked at what I heard next to me.

There was this lady chatting on her cell phone, stopped right in the middle of the aisle, with two small kids with her. One was in one of those car carts (which I think requires more work to steer the darn thing than actually keeping up with your kids-but thats another post) and the other was walking. The little boy that was walking looked like he was about 2 maybe 3 years old, and started walking ahead. All of a sudden I hear this lady scream at him "If you don't get your ass back here, I am going to f*ck you up!" -Damn, I understand you have to be stern...but do you really have to talk to a 2 year old like that? The little boy turned around and looked like he was about to cry, so then the lady decided to curse him out even more telling him he better not embarrass her in the store (Seriously??). No kidding and no overexaggerting, she just yelled all these profanities like a sailor, even calling the little boy stupid, who then as a result peed on himself and cried even more. This made her even more angry, and she told him that is what he gets and then continued her conversation on the phone, being completely oblivious to this boys needs and the situation she created.

I was mortified, along with everyone else who was shaking their heads and looking at her like she was crazy. My first reaction, was to make sure the little boy was okay, which I did. I couldn't help it. I had my big purse with me, which is usually filled with all kinds of kids things, and I went up to him, bent down to ask if he was okay and gave him a tissue. I looked up at the lady, and asked her if he could have a piece of candy. Though in reality, I really wanted to cuss her out, I didn't. I asked her nicely, and commented that sometimes kids do that (pee on themselves) when they are scared, because I have a little boy not much older than him....it happens, so maybe she shouldn't use that type of language when talking to him. She glared at me, and before she could respond, some other lady in the store who obviously heard her outbursts, said something to her in a not so nice tone which then distracted her from me.

I gave the little boy a piece of candy, and told him that it was okay and gave one to the little girl in the cart. I then got up and left.

I felt so bad for that child...both children actually. If a parent or any caregiver can talk to a child like that in public, what do they sound like behind clothes doors? Was this person just threatening this child? Or has it happened before? All of these questions started swarming around in my head, and I wish I could have done something more.

However, I know as parents we all have our bad days and we all make mistakes. There have been times I have yelled and went off on my kids because I was so completely stressed out. Of course I have never cursed my kids out like that, or demeaned them in anyway, but I can't judge another person's mistakes.....if indeed this was a mistake. And how I do I know this lady isn't some psycho? How do you know when you need to intervene? How do you differentiate between a want to intervene and a need to? I know the boundaries are grey and hard to define.

While I was standing in line to checkout, I spotted the lady and the kids and she looked at me, but didn't say anything, and both kids had their candy. So at least she didn't snatch it from them, because last thing I wanted to do was make the situation worse. Still I wish there was something more I could have did to make the situation better, and to this day I can't stop thinking about that little boy or that situation, wondering if I did the right thing.

Time for Comfort Food!

I cannot believe it is about to be October already. As I start to reminisce on this past year as I prepare for the last upcoming months of 2010, I wonder where the time went. It went by so fast!

And now we are once again preparing for that time of year, when the days become shorter, the weather cools, and the holidays quickly begin to approach us.

During this time of year, I crave comfort food, and I seem to have a lot more recipes that consist of soups, stews, pies, breads, and much more. I of course, plan to share with all my fabulous followers just in case you see something you might want to try :) Hopefully I will be getting a new camera soon, so I can take actual pictures while I prepare dishes for you all to see. (Yes hubby that was another hint).

So last night for dinner I decided to make meatloaf, which I haven't made in about 2 years. Hubby really doesn't care for it, so since he was working the night shift, I decided to give it a shot (though today he happily ate whatever was left). It was really good if I do say so myself. Little one liked it, but my other two are in this phase where the only meat for them is chicken, so they refused to try a bite. However, from everyone else who tried it, I got a two thumbs up. So if you like meatloaf, and need an easy recipe, here it is:

Ingredients

1 pound ground beef
1 1/4 teaspoons salt- I prefer seasoning salt
1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper
1 tsp garlic powder
1 tablespoon of Worcestershire sauce
1/2 cup chopped onion
1/2 cup chopped bell pepper
1 egg lightly beaten
8 ounces canned diced tomatoes with juice
1/2 cup quick-cooking oats- seasoned bread crumbs works well too

Topping:

2/3 cup ketchup
3 tablespoons brown sugar
2 tablespoon prepared mustard
2 teaspoons tomato paste
(You can add or subtract more or less of any of these to a sauce that fits your taste)

Directions

Preheat oven to 375 degrees

Sautee the bell pepper and onions, slightly until onions are just clear

Place of the ingredients (minus those for the topping) into a bowl and mix well. Make into a loaf and place in a baking pan lined with foil.

Mix together ingredients for sauce, spread on top and place in oven for about an hour and 10 minutes.

Once it is finished, let sit for at least 15 minutes before cutting it, otherwise it will crumble.

I like to serve mine with red garlic mashed potatoes, with peas and carrots on the side. Delish!

My Must Haves for Fall

Hello all of you fabulous people, I must warn you before you continue reading, this post is completely random; no thought out process before writing whatsoever, but I hope you enjoy all the same!

As you know, I have been looking forward to autumn for a few weeks now. With today finally feeling a little bit like fall, I decided to share with you some of my personal must haves for the season:

Open-toe boots....At first, for some reason I didn't like them; maybe because the concept of boots with an open toe kind of seemed ironic and ridiculous, but they have grown on me.

Though wearing these will be very short lived, especially residing here in the Chi, I will enjoy rocking a few pairs of these with my skinny jeans while I can.

Scarves....I love scarves! I love them because they are so versatile, and can add color and change up the look of any outfit easily and instantly. There are so many different ways to wear them too. Scarves for me are also my go to accessory when I'm trying to find something cute and chic to wear at the last minute, and nothing seems to work right, which for me is pretty often. So I'll tie up a cute scarf with some jewelry and transform an otherwise plain outfit into something fab.

A cute boyfriend blazer. For some reason I have been drawn to these recently, as they can be sassy and sophisticated at the same time. Of course you have to find one that fits your body well...nothing to big or too bulky, otherwise it doesn't work. But I love how you can really be versatile with these as well. You can dress them up or dress them down, and with being a mom, I am all about function and versatility.

And finally I wanted to share with you another must have for fall...hot apple cider (I told you, completely random). This is the version I usually make when I have company, especially during the holiday season.

Ingredients

6 cups apple cider
1/4 cup real maple syrup
2 cinnamon sticks
6 whole cloves
6 whole allspice berries
1 orange peel, cut into strips
1lemon peel, cut into strips
A bit of dark rum or brandy to your taste

Directions

Pour the apple cider and maple syrup into a large stainless steel pot
Place the cinnamon sticks, cloves, and allspice berries, orange and lemon peel in the center of a cheesecloth (a coffee filter works too), then tie with some kitchen string
Place the spice bundle in the cider mix, then place over medium for 5 to 10 minutes right before cider boils
Remove from heat, discard the spice bundle. Serve with a stick of cinnamon or garnish with an orange slice.
Also sometimes I substitute a couple cups of apple cider with cranberry juice and that is good too...its just a matter of preference.

Organized Chaos

....that's my life summed up in one phrase; or at least thats how I like to think of it. Or maybe thats how it looks like on the outside.

When it comes to our busy household, I try my best to plan ahead and figure out a schedule for both my family and I to help things run a bit more smoothly; more organized. Yet most of the time, I am being pulled in more than one direction at once which is where the challenge comes in. I have yet to figure out how to balance the many different hats I wear during the day, without neglecting something. Or, this wonderful thing we call life decides to make a grand appearance just when I thought it all figured out.

I recently had to get an organizer, or what I would like to call a "mommy planner" just to keep track of everyone's activities, dates, appointments, etc. I don't know how I managed to remember everything before it. Oh that's right, sticky notes....lots and lots of sticky notes right on the fridge.

Yep, organized chaos. Somewhere between kid, #1, 2, and 3, I realized I have become the walking poster board for "mommy brain." I tend to forget things all the time and have to literally write everything down. I don't know how many times I have walked in a room and forgot why I went in there in the first place. Yes, its bad...I told you. My memory is beyond shot.

And thing is, during the past month things have even gotten crazier since the girls have started school.

Is it just me, or is the first few weeks of school a lot of work for the parents? Between fundraisers, picture day, field trips, money needed for all kinds of things, parent-teacher conferences, PTA meetings, and so on, I fear for myself when little man starts school and I have 3 different schedules to keep track of. But of course, things will get done and it will work itself out. I will find a way to keep it all organized, somewhat....I think. Please someone...anyone.... tells me it gets better :)

So moms, any tips on how you keep running a household even somewhat organized?

Seven Things About Me

1. Well lets see.....I am a young wife and stay at home mom...which most have figured out already, but I bet you didn't know I married young at the age of 19 and have been married to my best friend for just about 9 years! Some people think its crazy; I see it as a blessing and accomplishment.

2. I am addicted to Pepsi and Coffee....I probably need to start drinking more water

3. I am semi-OCD when it comes to cleanliness, and how clean my house is.

4. My favorite fruit is watermelon, but I hate anything watermelon flavored...it shouldn't even be considered a flavor!

5. I love scrapbooking, photography, and anything crafty; though I have found with 3 kids I don't have as much time as I used to, to do much of any of my old hobbies

6. One of my biggest pet peeves and pretty much the only thing that really urkes me is judgmental and or/phony people. I can be friends with whoever, as long as they are real and up front with me. I don't care about your race, sexual orientation or any of that. Just be you!

How Do You Handle When Your Child Acts Out in Public?

I am sure it has happened to some of the best behaved kids....you're out grocery shopping, eating at a restaurant, running errands, and you have a small child that decides for whatever reason its time to try and throw a temper tantrum out in public. Moms, how do you handle the situation?

I know for me personally it used to really bother me when the kids were younger, in the terrible twos stage (especially with my spirited little one), and would act out in public and people would look at me like I was crazy. You know what I'm talking about...those that turn their nose up at you like they could do a better job at calming your kid down, or just shake their head at you like you're doing something wrong because your toddler decided to scream....yes those stares. It really used to bother me to no end, especially when I was doing what I could to calm my child down, and still getting the criticizing stares. If I knew of some magical way to shut my kid up in a snap of my fingers, of course I would do it, but it doesn't always work that way.

At the time I handled the situation by removing my kid from wherever we were. If I was in the grocery store, I had to inconvience myself and leave the store or if we were at a restaurant, I would take my kid in the bathroom and let them know they had to straighten up or they couldn't come back. Now they know mommy isn't playing when I say we're leaving and are pretty much well behaved in public. Its not often they act up when we are out now, and the few times they do I still get the stares, but I learned to not care. The way I see it, if you want to sit there and formulate an opinion about my parenting skills or my child within 5 seconds of seeing a situation, go right ahead. How does that saying go? "Your opinion about me is none of my business." I'm focusing on my kid, not you.

What prompted me to write this post today, was the news story posted a couple of weeks ago about that restaurant in Carolina Beach that posted a sign in their window that said "Screaming Children Will Not be Tolerated". Of course this sparked a huge debate with families of children, while others welcomed the action. I personally can understand both sides of the issue, but think that it comes off as a bit rude and hostile towards families, as I wouldn't call this a friendly reminder. Though any restaurant that unprofessionally prints this on a 8 1/2 by 11 sheet of printing paper to post in the window, probably wouldn't get my service anyway.

I can understand if you are trying to enjoy your meal, the last thing you want to hear is a kid screaming in your ear at the table next to you. However, its sort of hard to predict a child's every move. (If I had a superpower, I would definitely want to do that!) and rarely have I seen a parent just completely ignore their child that is throwing a temper tantrum at a restaurant and continue on with their meal as if nothing is happening. Most times I have seen after an attempt to quiet a child, the parent removes their child from the situation until they are able to calm down. I agree completely that a parent should take responsibility when their child is acting out; but is it really necessary to post a sign in the window?

On one side many people would agree that the sign was necessary, but then you can always flip it and say hey if you want peace and quiet while you eat and want to be that anal, stay at home. When you go out to public places, you have to deal with just that...the public.

This has always been one issue that has always gotten the best of me. I am not sure why, maybe its because I have had my fair share of times that I struggled with 3 kids by myself in public, even though I was not just "letting them misbehave." So what are you thoughts? Are there any particular kid friendly restaurants you DO feel comfortable taking your little one's to?

Maybe There is Such Thing as Baby Fever?

....and I thought I would never get it. I really did. In my mind the term "baby fever" didn't exist. After having my 2 girls and little man, my husband and I decided that we were done. That's it...factory closed. Shut down. Ceased.

When my son was born, my girls were 3, and 18 months and as you can imagine a newborn thrown into the mix with two toddlers was a bit overwhelming. Not to even mention my son was 10 lbs at birth, which contributed to a traumatic labor and delivery experience for me. I already had a scheduled c-section due to having 2 previous ones from baby girl being breeched. My son was breeched as well (what are the chances of that happening?) so by the time Jr was ready to be delivered, I knew the process and was ready.

Unfortunately because he was so big, Jr was not able to fit through the incision that I already had. I vaguely remember the doctors trying their best to get him out and was taking a lot longer than usual which to make a long story short, resulted in two things: 1. Jr was not able to get the oxygen he needed right away and was born limp and blue. I didn't see him, and my husband tried his best to keep me calm, but I immediately knew something was wrong because I didn't hear him cry for a long time. 2. Somehow I managed to have a panic attack right on the surgical table and couldn't breathe, yelling at the doctors that something was wrong.....shortly after that the drugs must have kicked in because I don't remember anything else but waking up in the recovery room. My husband assured me, Jr was okay (truly a blessing) but I wasn't able to see him for almost 3 days because I had developed an infection from being open in the surgical room for so long. Jr was in the NICU hooked up to tubes because he couldn't breathe on his own and since I had an infection, I of course couldn't go in the NICU. I thank God to this day everything ended up being okay but it was still a traumatic experience for me. And even though my husband and I had already decided not to have anymore, that just topped it off for me. No more.

As Jr got older and the chaotic days of having 2 kids in diapers, breastfeeding, sleepless nights, and toddlers running around me just as they should with temper tantrums and all, the thought of not having kids became even more of a confirmation. Three was more than enough for me. Of course I love each one of my kids much more than words can express, and consider each one of them a blessing in my life but I did not want any more and I knew hubby didn't either.

However I find as my kids are getting older I truly miss them being babies. I miss the breastfeeding, the cooing, the cuddling, the many firsts of just every day things...eating solid foods, laughing, crawling, laughing; it feels like their whole existences as babies just flew by in a heartbeat. I have many friends that are pregnant right now and I even miss being pregnant (crazy I know). I also find myself looking at baby clothes in the stores, thinking of how I missed dressing my kids in cute little baby clothes and booties. Please someone slap some sense into me.

I feel being a mother is such an amazing experience and some days, especially when my kids already act like they want nothing to do with me, I wonder what it would be like to just have one more. Quickly those thoughts are interrupted by a "MOMMYYYYY JR IS MEAN!!!!" or I turn around to find crayon drawn all over the wall or juice spilled all on the carpet and come back to reality. Those babies quickly turn in toddlers, and so and and so on, and you can't give them back.

So maybe I am just going through a sort of baby fever stage because I know so many that are expecting, and many that are thinking about adding an addition to their family and it makes me miss so much. I know I have a lot to look forward to as the kids get older, so I try to stay focused on that and not think about them having 3 teens at once. *sighs* Thats a scary thought right there.

My thoughts of having another baby are quick and swift, even though they have been frequent. But they are just that, thoughts and thoughts they shall remain. Ask me on any given day about having another kid and you'll get a definite "I'm done," so if hubby you are reading this don't worry :) I'll just look forward to being an auntie!

My Kids Will Survive Motherhood Too!

Surviving Motherhood....this was my very first idea as a name that came to mind when I started my blog. Why? Because many days, I feel like I am doing just that; surviving. Somewhere between kid #1, 2, and 3 my life has become a fast-paced, chaotic craze through time, and in the midst of it is me just trying to figure it all out.

Don't get me wrong, I love being a mom. It is the most amazing experience in the world and I am so blessed to have my children. I love them more than my own life and want all the best things for them.

However, after having three kids I have realized that raising these little people that develop their own personalities and minds can be pretty tough, and many situations don't always go by the books. Shoot...I'd even say the majority of situations don't go by the books. Someone should write a book about how to better improvise your way through motherhood. That seems more realistic doesn't it? Improvisation- I have definitely mastered the concept.

After pondering on my last post on "Mommy Guilt" I have realized too that because every child is different and there is no clear cut, black and white process to raising kids; everything I do does not have to be perfect. I'm human, I am going to make mistakes; and guess what? My kids are going to be fine. They'll survive childhood.

And of course, while I will do everything in my power to be the best mom I can be and protect my kids, sometimes things will happen and there is no need to freak out about it.

For example, if my kids skip a day or 2 without baths....hey you know what? they'll survive. I might actually let them run in the rain to make me feel a bit better :)

The few days they have way too many sweets and not enough fruits and veggies....you know what? They'll survive.

If the house isn't spotless all the time, or if one night I decide to leave the dirty dishes in the sink. You know what? The world is not going to end.

If I don't respond to when my kids call me right away...they'll survive. They can wait.

I'll even admit some days, I don't keep my kids completely active, or occupied with learning activities for them while they are home with me. Some days they sit right in front of the t.v. or play video games for hours on end....guess what? I have healthy, happy, smart kids and they do well in school.

Though of course I do not take raising our children nonchalantly. I like to think of our household as organized chaos. The majority of the time both my husband and I make sure my kids live, fulfilling, happy, healthy lives.....and let me reiterate the majority of the time :)
