Family Services Rochester - 5th annual Once Upon A Playhouse Event - Rochester, Minnesota

Family Service Rochester's key fundraiser to support its domestic violence programs is about to have its 5th annual Once Upon A Playhouse event. Once Upon A Playhouse has been a main attraction at the Rochester Area Builder's Home Show since it began in 2008. Children and families alike flock to the Once Upon A Playhouse event to see the innovative, playful, and fun playhouses each to be given away to one lucky raffle ticket holder.

Dollars raised from the Once Upon A Playhouse event last year were over $40,000. This money goes toward the programs around domestic violence at Family Service Rochester. Family Service Rochester offers rehabilitation for abusers and has seen an increase of abusers electing to get help; they offer assistance to the family and children, and help families who want to remain together in a new, non-abuse environment.

Expense for the Once Upon A Playhouse event are kept to a minimum which affords Family Service Rochester the opportunity to use maximum dollars earned toward programming. The builders all donate their talent, time, labor, and materials toward the playhouses and each has a retail value of over $2500.

Once Upon A Playhouse will be held at the Rochester Area Builders Home Show from February 10th-12th. There are 4 playhouses and sketches can be found at www.onceuponaplayhouse.org. Yellow Cab and Med City Taxi Rochester, Minnesota Review

Rochester, Minnesota has two main Taxi/Cab companies, Yellow cab and Med City Taxi. Yellow Cab has been in business in Rochester for over 10+ years, Med City has been in Rochester for roughly 5 years. As a transportation driver in Rochester I will give you my basic opinion and review of both as they pertain to 5 different categories and on a 10-Point scale (10 being the highest). My short review of both is my knowledge as a driver and also from customers response and opinions of both.

Meter Price: Overall this category seems to be the same across the board. Most of the Taxi Cab drivers in Rochester are honest in this way and don't gouge the meter for customers and for the most part travel destinations in the local Rochester area by cab usually doesn't cost more than $15.00. Med City 7.0 / Yellow Cab 7.0

Dispatch Call Center: I've heard from numerous customers about their customer service experience when placing a call to each Cab/Taxi company's dispatch center. Med City for the most part seems more professional and organized.When they answer the phone the voice on the other end usually sounds welcoming and professional. Yellow Cab is hit or miss depending on who picks up the phone. For the most part experience with the call center at times has been less professional and disorganized. Sometimes dispatch staff can be very nice and other times very rude. Med City 8.0 / Yellow Cab 6.0

Pick-Up Reliability: There seems to be a bit more of a wait when calling Yellow Cab expect your wait time to be 30mins+. Med City Taxi is usually 15mins+. We have to consider travel time in Rochester across town to get around from point A to Point B is roughly 15 minutes in general. Med City 8.5 / Yellow Cab 6.5

Drivers: Most of the drivers for Med City Taxi and Yellow Cab have worked for both companies drivers are hired back and forth. As with any company Cab drivers can be nice or rude, weird or "normal" so one wouldn't expect anything less or more for Rochester Taxicab drivers. Some things that stick out in contrast are Med City Taxi drivers have more of a clean appearance, uniforms are pressed, drivers seems more welcoming. Yellow Cab drivers once again is hit or miss, some drivers are neat in appearance while others look more disheveled, some are friendlier than others. It seems for Yellow Cab there is not much consistency for drivers across the board. Med City 8.0 / Yellow Cab 6.5

Cleanliness (vehicles): This is one category where there are deep contrast between both Cab companies. Med City Taxi has a fleet of cabs all which are kept up both in driving reliability and cleanliness inside and out, they seem to pride themselves on this. It is a very rare site to see a dirty or "beat up" vehicle from med City Taxi. On the other hand it seems that Yellow Cab is the complete opposite. Most of their cabs are dirty with stains on the inside, the vehicles are banged up pretty bad and the some of the cabs just out right have a very bad odor in them. But! Yellow Cab has introduced a few new vehicles in their fleet, but most of the vehicles are in pretty bad shape. Med City 9.5 / Yellow Cab 5.0

Hopefully this short review can help you when making a choice in what Taxi Cab service to us when visiting Rochester, Minnesota.

This is a quick link to a video that can provide you with brief information about the shops at University Square here in Rochester, Minnesota. Most of the shops at U Square range from overpriced to overpriced (it's not a typo). The shops are based and geared toward visitors that come to Rochester. The shops aren't really that upscale (even though they might appear to be) and barely contemporary for that matter. But not all is bad there are a few shops that have offerings worth checking out.

The M Gear store (they can provide you with all of the University of Minnesota gear that you'd ever need), Barnes and Noble (great people and a good size store), Games by James (they have been here for awhile - great people and store), Lens Crafters (hey who doesn't need a great pair of glasses). and Chester's is a cool place to have a late night drink, hang out with friends and snob shoulder's with some of Rochester's elite.

Overall Shops at University Square do offer some unique stores (all stores were not mentioned here ...just the ones we like...JK:)...But hey it could have more diversity....MOVIE THEATER ANYONE??.......

1. First, the Rochester city bus line does not run on Sundays.

2. Most buses do leave and arrive to/from downtown on 2nd street. So there is no problem getting around if you're staying at any place that is in downtown Rochester.

3. There are buses that connect you to most of Rochester's main shopping/entertainment centers - those buses are:

Nedal Rezeq is a local artist from Rochester, Mn. Born in Amman, Jordan where he practiced art and where he also held the position of Visual Art Supervisor at the Amman City Hall Gallery in the province of Al-Madenah. After leaving Jordan he decided to make his new home here in America and now resides in Rochester, Mn where he has lived for the last 14 years. For the most part Rochester is one of the safest little big cities in Minnesota (its the third largest city in Minnesota after Minneapolis and St.Paul) There are really no "rough" parts or areas of town that you would want to avoid, although, there is a "low income" demographic side of town, this area is pretty much safe. Downtown Rochester overall is very safe any time of the day. Downtown is patrolled not only by the Rochester Police Department but also the Mayo Clinic security (who are very efficient on stamping out any disturbance on Mayo Clinic property or downtown Rochester) and hotel security. Minnesota has several different drive in theaters, none of which are in Rochester. The closest drive in theater to Rochester would be Mann's Theater Cottage View Drive-In, located in Cottage Grove, Minnesota which is 70 miles or roughly 1 hour and 20mins from Rochester.

Minnesota Orchestra Free Family Concerts

The Minnesota Orchestra is offering free family concerts, no catches involved.

The Minnesota Orchestra has announced the lineup for the 2011-12 season of its Target Free Family Concerts.

The season includes concerts celebrating America and world music, all-ballet shows, a concert built around Mussorgsky's "Pictures at an Exhibition" and the season finale, Prokofiev's "Peter and the Wolf."

Seven concerts are planned. The series offers weekend afternoon presentations at Orchestra Hall in downtown Minneapolis in a one-hour format.

As in past seasons, the free tickets will be offered through a random drawing. The first registration period is for two summer performances on Sunday, July 3; that registration period runs through May 18.

You won't find Pho Tai Vietnamese restaurant on many of Rochester ,Minnesota visitor booklets and information sites. Heck, even most of the hotel front desk staff will not mention one of Rochester's hidden gems for great Asian/Vietnamese food wonderful staff and good atmosphere.

I love the big selection of soups (tripe and #93 is my favorite) that they offer and most entrees are under $10.00 and in my opinion they have some of the best egg rolls in Rochester, Minnesota. Also their dine in and take out options are also great. Restaurant hours are: Tues-Thurs 11am-9pm

Fri-Sat 11am-10pm Sunday 11am-8pm.
