Windblown Throw Quilt in Blue and Teal Batiks - a stash friendly wave quilt!

Today I'm excited to share the new Windblown quilt! Perfect for using your stash, Windblown is fat quarter friendly, making it easy to use what you have. The pattern includes 8 sizes from Baby to King with 2 Throw sizes and 2 Queen sizes, so you can make the perfect size for any one on your list.

In this half-square triangle quilt, the prints appear to blow across the quilt top in windy waves. The windblown look is further defined with two accent colors - a light hue and a medium hue.

You'll love the large blocks that go together quickly with simple sewing.

So many sizes!

The math for Windblown worked out for all sizes except the Full, unfortunately - that's 8 sizes in all!

I sure do enjoy doing all of the math in calculating the quilt sizes for you. I've done it all inside the pattern too, and I think you're gonna love that. You will not have to calculate how many squares to cut from a strip when using my patterns; the detailed cutting instructions are right there in black and white.

Windblown Quilt Stats:

Beautiful Batik Fabrics!

For this quilt, I broke into the Java Batiks FQ bundles in my stash and pulled out the deeper blues and teals for the waves and used the lighter seafoam for the accent fabric, along with solid white batik for the background. Also added in were a few Expressions Batiks by Riley Blake Designs.

One thing I really love about batiks is they are reversible, so both sides are right and there is no flipping fabrics over when piecing.

The binding strips were cut from the leftover fat quarters. I joined all of the seafoam strips and then the dark teal and then the blue and navy strips together in an attempt to make it look less scrappy.

Um, I made an oopsie!

I made a big oopsie when assembling this quilt, and it's so hidden that I'm not sure it would be noticed if I didn't confess. The blocks in every other row are oriented incorrectly. The placement of the two accent fabrics is supposed to be swapped in the blocks in every other row, and I didn't swap them at all. By golly, I didn't even notice until I was looking at it on the longarm, after it was quilted! Fortunately, with these fabrics it's not really noticeable. I made this same mistake on the other Windblown quilt I made, and it still looks great, so I'm thinking it doesn't really matter... :)

For comparison, below is an image in similar fabrics showing how the pattern is written. The accent fabrics are supposed to rotate 45 degrees in the blocks in every other row.

This fabric collection is Codici in the cool colorway by White Owl Textiles. This awesome collection of blenders will be in shops soon (March 2026).

Longarm Machine Quilting

The digital longarm quilting design used on this quilt is a mystery at this time. I will insert it here when I find the name of it. :) Quilted on my Handi Quilter Amara with ProStitcher using Superior Omni Thread in Fountain Mist Light Blue.

Windblown Quilt Pattern - a Modern Wave Sewn Up in I ♥ Ombre!

Today I'm sharing the Windblown quilt pattern, this one is in I ♥ Ombre and is super sweet!

Windblown is a modern quilt made with HSTs and paired with two accent fabrics for a fun and easy quilt. The Windblown quilt pattern is brand new in the pattern shop.

Windblown Pattern Features

Meet Windblown - the newest pattern in the Busy Hands Quilts pattern line! This pattern is perfect for using fat quarters and two accent fabrics.

The accent fabrics in this quilt are very subtle - one is Cloud and the other is the lightest print in the I ♥ Ombre collection. The darker accent can be a little more colorful, as long as the print fabrics in the "wind" still stand out against it.

As is my goal with all quilt patterns, Windblown includes as many sizes as work out mathematically, and the score for Windblown is EIGHT quilt sizes!

Those Sweet Fabrics!

I made this quilt from a bundle of I ♥ Ombre by V and Co for Moda Fabrics that I had been hoarding for just the right project. I have a FQ of each print left, and it's perfect for the Quilty Cabins pattern in the Throw size.

This collection is also known as I Heart Ombre. The hearts are gold metallic on ombre in purples, pinks, peaches, and red. The "light" accent is Confetti Cotton in Cloud, and the "dark accent" is the lightest print in the I ♥ Ombre collection, which has a background similar to Cloud even though the fabrics are made by different manufacturers.

I Made an Oopsie!

Longarm Machine Quilting

I found the perfect heart digital longarm quilting design over at Sew Shabby Pantos - it's called Heart Song. I love the hearts and swirls and half Baptist fans. This design stitched out really nicely in natural white thread on my Handi Quilter Amara with ProStitcher.

Sew Shabby Pantos has truly unique digital longarm designs at a great price when you join The Panto Club. I suggest checking it out if you have a computerized longarm. (This plug is not sponsored, just my opinion).

For the binding, I cut strips from the pieces left of each I ♥ Ombre fat quarter and created a scrappy binding.

Snappy Squares Throw Quilt in Batiks - a New Quilt Pattern!

Today I'm sharing, Snappy Squares, a new quilt pattern that is perfect for the layer cake squares or fat quarters you have in your stash, or even your stash bins!

This pattern includes 9 sizes in all and is 10" square, FQ, or scrap friendly. There are options for three different ways to arrange the prints in the blocks, too!

So Many Sizes!

If you've been here for any length of time, you know that I love to do all of the math for you, so you can make the exact quilt size you want without doing any extra calculations. I am here for the math! :)

Snappy Squares includes 9 quilt sizes, so the quilts you make will really meet the true needs of the people you create for.

I make every effort to design quilt sizes that are oversized in the bed sizes to account for shrinkage when you wash your quilts and to account for today's thicker mattresses. Plus, no one wants to fight over the covers!

Precut and Scrap Bin Friendly!

Snappy Squares is perfect for 10" layer cake square stacks, and the Throw size uses a layer cake perfectly, using 35 out of the 40/42 squares. This leaves a little leeway to remove the prints that are too close in hue to the sashing color.

You can also use fat quarters for Snappy Squares. I've done all of the math for you and figured out how many blocks you'll get from one FQ. You might be surprised!

In addition to the above precut fabric options, there is a chart in the pattern that tells you how many pieces of each size to cut to make each quilt size, making this pattern perfect for using your scrap bins!

You can see that what you have in your stash is most likely perfect to use for the Snappy Squares pattern!

Fabric Selection and Placement

The Snappy Squares fabric requirements include using 10" layer cake squares or fat quarters. Of course, you can always use your scrap bins, referring to the included chart that details how many of each piece size you'll need.

There are three ideas for print placement in each block, and each of these placement ideas result in a unique quilt.

Place the prints at random

Use the same print in each block

Use a single colorway with several prints in a block

Beautiful Java Batiks!

This quilt is made with a Java Batiks by Maywood Studios. I curated the fabrics from four or five single-color FQ bundles. The fabrics include light-medium, medium and dark hues in several colorways - blues, purples, pinks, and teals. For me, it is tempting to leave out the light-medium hues, but those are the fabrics that add a pop or sparkle to the quilt top.

Today I'm sharing another Snappy Squares quilt in bright and happy colors on a bright white background! You'll love the ease of this design and the fact that all of the math is done in 9 quilt sizes. Plus, it's precut and stash-friendly also!

I love to do all of the math for you, so you can make the exact quilt size you want without doing any extra calculations. I am here for the math! :) This pattern includes two Throw sizes and two Queen sizes so you can make the perfect fit for your needs.

Working within the bounds of that thing called MATH, I make every effort to design quilt sizes that are oversized in the bed sizes to account for shrinkage when you wash your quilts and to account for today's thicker mattresses. Plus, this lessens fighting over the covers!

Layer Cake, Fat Quarter, and Scrap Bin Friendly!

You'll love that the fabric you have on hand will work in Snappy Squares. Peruse your 10" layer cake square stacks, because the Throw size uses a layer cake perfectly, using 35 out of the 40/42 squares. This leaves a little leeway to remove the prints that are too close in color to the sashing color.

You can also use fat quarters for Snappy Squares. I've done all of the math for you and figured out how many blocks you'll get from one FQ. You might be surprised!

You can see that what you have in your stash is most likely perfect to use for the Snappy Squares pattern!

Today I'm sharing a scrappy-looking Snappy Squares quilt in the Throw size. Is it truly a "scrappy" quilt though? Keep reading to find out!

This pattern includes 9 sizes in all and is 10" square, FQ, or scrap friendly. There are options for three different ways to arrange the prints in the blocks, too!

Is it a precut collection or scraps?!

Snappy Squares is an awesome design for using your scrap bins! The pattern includes a chart that tells you how many of each piece size to cut for each quilt size, which makes using your scraps and leftover pieces easy. You'll likely love this feature in the pattern, and I aim to include a chart like this in all of my patterns now.

This quilt is made with a single layer cake but looks scrappy because of the wide variety of prints and colorways found in the layer cake. The fabric collection is Marigold by Aneela Hoey for Moda Fabrics which works perfectly for a modern eclectic vibe. This fabric collection is currently available right here.

I found the perfect digital longarm quilting design for this quilt at Sew Shabby Pantos. It's called Wild Landscape and is available right here. It echoes the tulip, leaf, and daisy prints in the fabric and stitches out easily without any back-stitching.

Make It Scrappy Quilts by Customers!

Today I'm sharing customer quilts in the Make It Scrappy quilt pattern! This quilt pattern is charm square and layer cake friendly and includes 6 sizes - Baby, Lap, Throw, Twin, Queen, and King.

This quilt by Margaret Egolf is made with Chirp fabric by Moda Fabrics on a background of Radiance by Whistler. I think the color is Light Blue, but I'm not entirely sure. I love the soothing colors in this quilt, and the longarm quilting design is perfect for the quilt.

The Make It Scrappy quilt below is made by Rachel in purple batiks on a black background. The crisp black background really lets the purples sparkle and shine in this beautiful quilt.

The Make It Scrappy quilt below is made by Wendy in Thomas the Tank Engine fabric. The bold yellow and blue fabrics look great with the Thomas fabrics. The Baby size quilt is a great way to learn how to sew a quilt with diagonal rows.

Quilted Christmas Tree Skirt!

In time for Christmas 2025, I finished a quilted Christmas tree skirt. It turned out really pretty. This is the first time I remember making bias binding, and it wasn't nearly as difficult as I envisioned it with the help of some YouTube videos for the win.

The Mister and I took the Jolie quilts to Ariel Foundation in Mount Vernon, Ohio, a park where a glass factory previously stood. It's now a 200+ acre park. It was a beautiful, crisp fall day! There are lots of brick walls to hang quilts from.

The Perfect Size of Runners, Toppers, and Wall Hangings

The Jolie quilt pattern includes 6 sizes so you can make the table runner, table toppers, and wall hangings in the size that will fit your space perfectly! No more tiny table runners swallowed up on your large table - the Large runner is a whopping 23" x 62". Or maybe you have the opposite problem, and table runner patterns are too large for your small table. Jolie has you covered with a Small Runner measuring 17" x 34" and a Small Square measuring 23" x 23".

To make fabric selection easy and to ultimately reduce fabric waste, the Binding is included with the Dark Accent fabric.

You'll Love Mistletoe and Holly Fabric!

These two quilts are made using the Mistletoe and Holly fabric collection by Beverly McCullough for Riley Blake Designs. The red, white, and green fabrics are so festive with its bright and happy flowers, snowflakes, bells, candy canes, plaids, and more! I love the muted greens and grays mixed in with the bolder forest green and Christmas reds.

The dark accent, binding, and backing fabric is Dapple Dot in Barn Red from Riley Blake Designs, and the light accent is Confetti Cotton in Cloud.

A note about fabric placement

For this quilt pattern, I recommend laying out all of the pieces before sewing to make sure you like the way the prints play next to each other. In order to achieve good pop of the accent fabric against the other prints, fabric placement is important. The lighter prints are best along the outer edge of the quilt because they will touch the dark accent fabric. If the light accent contrasts well with all of the prints, even the light ones, then it doesn't matter so much which prints are placed next to the light accent.

For the square quilt featured, the reds and forest green prints in the quilt center are placed symmetrically rather than randomly. The red prints aren't placed next to the barn red accent at all; they are in a square design in the center of the quilt. The forest green prints are placed near the red accent - note these prints are in the four corners and the very middle of the quilt center, and in two triangles along the edge of the quilt. Then the lighter prints in the fabric collection fill in the remaining spaces.

For the runner quilt featured, the red prints were placed in the center of the quilt, so they don't touch the red accent fabric at all. Then remaining prints were filled in, with the lighter ones along the outer edge of the quilt where they touch the red accent.

This stunning floral version of Jolie is the perfect Spring-themed or fall-themed quilts! Fabrics are from the First Blooms collection by Heather Peterson for Riley Blake Designs. The red, orange, yellow, teal, and green colors balance each other out splendidly and remind me of a Spring morning!

A note about fabric placement

In these quilts, the dark accent fabric is called Denim. This fabric collection has only two light prints, so fabric placement is really easy. Really, the only suggestions are to set aside the squares in the same print as the dark accent (Mini Blooms in Denim) and to avoid placing Denim prints next to the Denim dark accent print. In the table runner, I placed the Denim prints down the center; and in the square topper, the Denim prints are placed in a scattered 5-patch layout. All other prints are placed randomly.

The longarm quilting design I used is Cottage Core 1 by Melissa Kelley 2025 in Superior Omni Yellow thread. I am sure tickled how this thread blended in so well with all of the fabrics. This was quilted on my HandiQuilter Amara with ProStitcher.

Patriotic Fabrics!

For this bold and lively quilt, I used the Star Spangled Beauty fabric collection by Kimberbell Design for Maywood, creating the perfect summer quilt. It's a sweet mix of dark blues, reds, and medium blues and pinks on a creamy cloud background.

Did you see that backing fabric? I love it! It's a preprinted fabric of quilt blocks made in the Star Spangled Beauty prints. We've got it in the shop!

A note about fabric placement

For the runner quilt featured, the navy prints were placed in the center of the quilt, so they don't touch the navy accent fabric at all. Then remaining prints were filled in mostly randomly, but the red prints in the center are echoed on both ends of the quilt center.
