Stormy Bass Fishing on Piney-Z Lake

Went out a while ago with two buddies to fish the trolling motor only lake of Piney-Z. Ended up catching a few nice bass until the weather made up head in. Off the water and having breakfast at Jim and Milts BBQ by10am. Another good Springtime bass fishing day!

Piney-Z Pre Spring Spawn Bass

Took a ride over to Piney-Z, lugged the Gheenoe by hand down to the launch. Headed out as the sun was coming up. Worked topwater baits, a few casts in boated a nice 4.5lb bass. Caught a few more on top water until the sun came up when we switched to senko style paddle tail worms rigged weedless. Ended up catching around 15 bass averaging around 3lbs each. Great day on the water.

April Flounder in the Marsh

Arrived at the marsh to a low incoming tide. We saw many reds but never could hook up. We caught a nice flounder and plenty of trout throwing DOA Paddle tails. We also caught a Nice trout the was attacked by a shark, dolphin, or alligator.

April Fools in the Bayou

Took a trip out to take advantage of the incoming tide all day, was expecting to have 10-15mph winds and a chance of thunder storms but the weather man was apparently pulling an April fool’s joke as it was less than 5mph winds all day. It was very foggy and misting in the morning when we launched but eventually turned into sunny blue bird skies. Started throwing top water and had a few blow ups and eventually hooked up to a little red. Continued fishing and caught some nice trout. We moved over to an oyster bar that was just covered by the tide, immediately saw tailing fish, Cast, hooked up to a nice 31” spotless Redfish. Snapped some pictures and it was safely released. Moved deeper into the bayou and caught a fair share of reds and trout. We then cruised home to the wonderful scenery of the Saint Marks Wildlife refuge and the beautiful spring weather. Dolphins Feeding on Mullet in Big Cove (St. Marks Florida)

Stoney Bayou Redfish and Trout

Ventured out after class, my usual fishing partners all had other engagements so this was a solo trip. Took the run to Stoney Bayou on a low incoming tide. Once I dodged all the rocks in the bayou and arrived at my spot I immediately hooked up throwing a D.O.A Cal Paddle Tail on a 1/4oz Jig head. Ended up boating a 32" Red after a drag screaming battle. During my fight the Gheenoe was dragged over the hole the Red was sitting in and about ten similarly sized reds took off. I later caught more reds from 23" to an average of 18". I managed to catch one 21" Trout out of a hole by an oyster bar formed on a limestone rock. Headed in when the wind picked up and had a wet ride in.

Springtime Stoney Bayou Dolphins (St. Marks, FL)

Arrived at St. Marks at sun-up to a incoming tide. Ran immediately to the creeks south of the light house. Threw top water lures and had a lot of blow ups and eventually landed some trout. Moved on and Alain caught a large needle fish and snagged a mullet, which both put on a good fight. Moved into Stoney Bayou and dolphins came in attacking and surrounding mullet just inches from the boat. After the dolphins stopped spooking all the fish we ended up catching some more trout. I gut hooked one 18" and decided to take her home. The start of spring brought a great day on the water!

Spring at Lake Talquin Florida

Took a quick trip to Lake Talquin last week. We got to a late start at around 10am. Spring has sprung and it was about 85 degrees and no wind was to be found. We tried to stay in the shade. Not much luck but was confronted by a large 10 foot gator as we go a little to close to its nest in the lilly pads. No pictures as I was too worried about starting the engine and getting out of the area. Did manage to snap some shots of some other gators. Caught a few bass, was off the water by 1pm due to the heat.

Spring Break '12 Fishing

Well it was that time of year again, when college coeds flock to the beaches to drink more liquor than there livers can filter and getting a tan while there at it. Being a college student I decided to join in on the festivities, but not with out a little fishing. I started off my break in Tampa to fish, of course there were 25-30mph winds with gusts double that so taking the gheenoe out was a no go. So I went fishing with my good friend Richard in his larger 17 ft Whaler. We had very little luck in the adverse condition and managed only a trout and a lady fish. After my trip to Tampa I traveled down to Miami to fish with my friend Alain. The wind was also affecting Miami yet we managed to catch quite a few nice fish on his large bass lake. I ended my trip in a few days in Key west. Here are some pictures from my fishing adventures.

After so much success last trip we decided to take a trip back a few days later. We immediately went to the other side of the lake, to deeper water and the tree clumps. Caught a handful of fish and saw a bunch of wildlife including bald eagles, ospreys, gators, and a very curious otter that came over to say hello and stare at us. Overall another successful day on the water.

Pre-Super Bowl Bass on Lake Talquin

Headed to Lake Talquin with Alain of www.youtube.com/Soflobassfishing on a foggy Sunday. Headed out of coe’s landing on the east side of the lake and proceeded to fish what locals call the iron curtain. The Iron Curtain is a group of trees that are located within the lake creating great structure for fish. We ended up catching a few fish here as well as loosing quite a few. On the outskirts of the trees I managed to hook up with a freshwater catfish which hit a senko worm with paddle tail rigged weedless. We continued on and ended the day catching a huge 5lb large mouth. Here are the pictures from the day!

Febuary Bass Fishing in Northwest Florida In the Gheenoe

Woke up today at 6:30am and headed to Piney-Z Lake with Alain of SoFlo Bass Fishing http://www.youtube.com/user/soflobassfishing. It is a small lake that was once part of the larger Lake Lafayette . It was dammed up during the late 1940's when the owners created a farm pond out of park of Lake Lafayette creating Piney-Z. It has been stocked by the Florida fish and wildlife conservation, who has created a diverse ecological system. The lake is a no internal combustion motor zone, so we took only the trolling motor topping the Gheenoe out at around 5mph. We ended up seeing large grass carp, large alligator gar, as well as catching large mouth bass. We ended up catching most of the bass on Senko worms worked weedless. Haven't had a chance to post do to exams, and had these pictures form a recent trip. Went out after a cold front rolled through and there was blue bird skies, the fish bite wasn't on fire but it sure was beautiful. Here are the pictures from the day. Florida Sea Trout Bill Passed with Changes (No Seine Nets!)

The Florida sea trout bill was recently passed at the FWC meeting in the keys. The large issue of the bill was the idea of using seine nets for commercial fishermen. The bill was changed at the meeting and it seems to have come to a good conclusion.

Changes take effect Feb.1, 2012, and include:

* Removing regional recreational season closures (removing the current February closure in northern Florida and the November-through-December closure in southern Florida);

* Raising the recreational bag limit in northeast Florida from five to six;

* Changing commercial seasons based on region – lengthening them from three months to five months in the northwest, southwest (June 1 - Oct. 31) and southeast (May 1 - Sept. 30) regions, and from three months to six months in the northeast region (June 1 - Nov. 30);

* Allowing spotted seatrout to be sold 30 days after the close of the regional commercial season;

* When there are two commercially licensed fishermen aboard, changing the commercial vessel limit to 150;

* Redefining the areas where spotted seatrout are managed by splitting the state into four management zones instead of three.

The changes come after a 2010 spotted seatrout stock assessment indicated numbers were consistently exceeding the annual management goal across the state, and nearly double in the northeast region of Florida.

It looks like we will have our sea trout fishery intact and we will be able to catch and keep sea trout year round with new season closures.

Sight Casting Reds in the Marsh Pre Cold Front

Started with the morning coffee, and arrived to St. Marks Florida at around 7:45am. Launched at an almost slack low tide, immediately started throwing top waters with no luck. Moved to a large bar with mullet all around throwing paddle tales and top waters and again had no luck.

Moved down the flat to the marsh entrance, poled the flat and ran up on a lone redfish sitting in a sand hole about five feet away from the bow of the boat. Sight casted a DOA Cal paddle tail to the fish and immediately hooked up. Took a couple of runs and then boated a just over slot 28” redfish. Snapped some photos and successfully released the fish to battle another day.

The tide started to move again so we decided to drift our way into the marsh. TONS of mullet were in the marsh going in with the tide, we successfully slammed with some more reds, trout, and a lone flounder that was caught on the way out of the marsh.

Ran back to the ramp with an incoming tide and was off the water by 12pm. Weather was beautiful at around 78 degrees with a 5mph wind from the SE. Until Next time Tight Lines!

Anchored up Cold Front Fishing @ The Lighthouse, Reds and Trout

Wake up call was at 7am, and awoke to a cold and damp morning at a low temp of around 45 degrees and a stiff 15mph breeze it was definitively not a prime fishing day. We decided to go anyway, and just try to hide from the wind and find some fish. Launched after a coffee and idled out of the canal. The northwest wind was hard to hide from by the light house so we anchored up next to a sandbar, and tossed some gulps around a mullet school. Ended up with a Red and a Large Trout. I also caught a stingray that thankfully came unbuttoned right at the boat. Also lost something large that was ripping drag that came off right as I tightened the drag. Cold but a decent day for staying in the same spot and tossing artificial, off the water by 11am.

Breezy Start to November in the Gheenoe

Got a late start to the day as my buddies alarm didn't go off. Finally made it to the water at around 8:30am. Launched and fished long bar and the marsh. Caught Reds, Trout, and Black Seabass all in the same area. coming into the marsh an air boat spooked all the fish and ran through right where we were fishing. Pictures Below:

First Solo Trip in the Gheenoe

Hitch up the 'noe around 6am on Friday morning and headed to St. Marks. Stopped to get a coffee and let the sun rise a bit, then launch to another ultra low tide.

Motored out tossing a top water, and caught a couple of trout on the flats.

Poled around a long sand and oyster bar and only managed to spook some reds. Ended up catching a couple of flounder bouncing a jig head off the sand. Moved on and did a little photo shoot with the gheenoe.

Overall and nice relaxing solo trip at the lighthouse! As always Tight lines, and Happy Halloween- Dave

SUPER low Tide Fishing at the Lighthouse

Like always took a trip to St. Marks to do some fishing. Launch at low tide, which was a hill tide and unbelievably shallow. Ended up poling around where it wasn't dried up and caught Trout, Flounder, and a handful of the ugly and always aggressive Lizardfish. Nick also caught a trout of a lifetime and lost it at the boat trying to lip the fish. Here are the pictures of the adventure:
