Sit down in this Laz-Boy recliner and you'd have a heck of a buzzing surprise!

A colony of Southern YellowJackets, Vespula squamosa, decided to make their nest inside this recliner. Amazingly, this is very common, as the interior of most upholstered furniture has very large voids, providing perfect refuge in which to raise young, and to defend. If you look closely, you can see several openings that these wasps have chewed open, and surrounded with a paper like substance that they manufacture from tree barks.

Tampa Yellow Jacket Nest Removal

Above is a photo of a yellow jacket nest in Tampa. The yellow jacket build their nests underground and grow very rapidly. This nest alone had nearly 10,000 yellow jackets! Daytona Yellow Jackets attack camera!

This was a fun one!

We performed a Volusia county Yellow Jacket wasp treatment and removal in a horse pasture. It was a very nice sized nest, and I thought getting some POV video from near the nest would bee very interesting.

As you can see, I positioned the camera very close to the nest opening and within seconds, hundreds of Yellow jackets were swarming around the camera, and actively stinging the black rubber and fabric parts of the lens shroud, handle, etc.

I hope to edit the camera video and post it, so stay tuned, as it should be WILD!!

Ocala Yellow Jacket wasp nest

It's been an interesting spring for us this year.. Drought combined with a very mild winter has our stinging insects in a 'tizzy'. Yellow Jacket wasp nests for instance, are still packed with virgin queens, which is VERY strange this time of year. Normally, these queens will leave the nest during November or December, and seek out a nice log to overwinter in. Then, at the start of spring, they search for suitable nest locations, and start new nests en-masse.

This pic is typical for us. A modest nest opening, consisting of a 'paper-mache' that the wasps create from cellulose and saliva. Several guard workers, and a busy stream of wasps flying in and out of the nest openings. Doesn't look like much, eh?

Oh contrare... these nests can extend for several feet in diameter.. under the ground, and maybe two to three feet down. The wasps are very well adapted for excavating soil and building nests, and can number in the hundreds of thousands of individuals!

Daytona Beach Yellow Jacket Nest Removal with Queen and Eggs!

Got lucky on this photo. I had just removed a Southern Yellow Jacket (Vespula squamosa), from an apartment hedge, and was taking some pics. The Queen was positioned on the outside of the nest material, and just above her are 2 eggs freshly laid in cells! I shot this with my Iphone camera, using available light.

Rarely can I see Yellowjacket eggs laid in the cells. And to get this with my Iphone, well, just wow!!

Anyway, this nest was threatening Apartment residents, so we were called to remove it properly, meaning we minimize the flight activity of these very defensive wasps, during and after our treatment and removals.

Summerfield Fl Yellow Jackets in a wall!

We have 2 species of Yellow Jacket wasps here in Florida, and both of them prefer to build their nests in the ground, but on occasion, we find them in many other places.

This photo shows the paper envelope coming out from behind a phone junction box. The yellowjacket nest is located in the block wall, residing in the voids of the blocks. The client had been stung and her Air conditioning service technician had been stung as well, so it had to be taken care of quickly.

We have a protocol that involves drilling small holes in the blocks, locating the nest, and using pressure delivered expanding pesticide to completely cover the nest. We seal everything up and give a good long warranty.

Jacksonville: John Whittet was investigating a snake sighting in his backyard, when he was startled by hundreds of YellowJacket wasps. Within seconds they were covering his arm and attacking his face.

We received a call from a client in Alachua, one of the most beautiful towns in Florida! But alas, her beauty was being interupted by nasty, defensive YellowJacket wasps, who had decided to build an underground nest right in her front yard. This is really cool... Honey Bees moved into a birdhouse in Winter Park, Fla., and ALLFloridaBeeRemoval.com came to the homeowner's rescue to perform a live honey bee relocation.

Now, African Honey bees, aka Killer Bees, really, really prefer smaller voids such as bird houses, feeders, wildlife nesting boxes and the like, so it's quite probable that these are African. Tavares Yellow Jacket Removal

This is a Vespula maculifrons nest, aka the Eastern Yellowjacket. We don't see too many of these species of Yellowjackets in Central Florida, instead we see their cousin, Vespula squamosa, the Southern Yellowjacket, which can attain huge nest sizes of over One million individuals!

The Eastern Yellowjacket nests stay relatively small, maybe getting to the size of a large watermelon at their largest. They only have one queen per nest,which limits the reproductive output, hence the nest size as well.

This one was maybe the size of a large softball, but still had plenty of firepower, as I suffered a few stings myself!

This Leesburg Yellowjacket nest is a startling example of the real dangers that stinging insects represent.
Look at this photo. You'd agree that this nest is relatively small, as you can see my boot there on the left for size reference. Yet, this small Yellow Jacket colony nearly killed a Leesburg home owner, who was simply raising a flag in her backyard.

She was stung about 15 times, suffered an allergic reaction, and if not for her neighbor hearing her cries for help, would have died within minutes. Her blood pressure had fallen below 50 mm systolic. Paramedics arrived within 3 minutes and rushed her to the emergency room, where she was confined to hospital stay for about a week.
Her daughter called us to treat and remove the yellow jacket nest, and we checked her yard for any other nests.

We were called out to a Gainesville apartment complex to treat and remove one Yellow Jacket nest that was located about a foot away from a walkway leading to an apartment entry. Upon arrival, I always take time to do a proper inspection, and boy am I glad I did!

Melrose, Fla. Yellow Jacket Wasp removal from a WoodShed

This is one woodshed you DON'T want to be taken to!

Our client was removing some firewood from his woodshed and was attacked by Yellow Jackets!

Do you see the nest?

He suffered several stings before he could runaway to the safety of his house, and then had to deal with a swollen hand for a few days to top it off! Localized swelling and itching is normal after even one Yellow Jacket sting, and we can attest that YellowJacket stings are one of the most painful insect stings here in Florida!

I had to dig around a bit in the firewood to finally find the nest, but, I was protected in my sting suit, which is sting resitant, not sting proof, btw.....

If you look at this picture, you can see the greyish paper envelope that surrounds the nest. The envelope protects the nest from rain,and in this case from 3 cans of Raid Fogger that the client used in a vain attempt at controlling these girls!

We received a 911 call today from an Ocala horse farm.. Ground bees were swarming and attacking guests and pets attempting to get through the main gate.

Well, we arrived near dusk, and found a sizable colony of Southern YellowJackets, and boy, were they mad! Somebody had sprayed them with wasp spray, which killed some of them, but really made the rest of them ballistic!

This photo shows several of the plates, and you can plainly see the pupal cases, which are the white swatches. I think the symmetry of the queen's laying pattern is really beautiful, don't you?
