Oh My God! I Totally Love This Song

STAY AWHILE BY SHE & HIM

This gorgeous Dusty Springfield cover has had me swooning for a couple days. The video is as quirky as one would suspect from the adorkable one. I actually really enjoy Zooey Deschanel but can see how others may find her annoying. For me, she brings a certain charm to everything she does and is a pretty funny lady, too. Plus, she got style. This song is creamy and dreamy and smooth and just gorgeous.

Sometimes, a song that sounds old timey at Christmas cements itself as a Christmas song in my head (Whitney Houston’s I Will Always Love You comes to mind). Other times, I’ll go down a YouTube hole and find old music that I haven’t heard or every listened to. I think I’m about to go on a Dusty Springfield kick. Or maybe just a Rick Springfield kick.

I hate to see you go, I'll tell you what I'll do, I'll be good to you:

Oh My God! I Totally Love This Song!

MAD ABOUT YOU BY BELINDA CARLISLE

Do you ever look back and think that it seems impossible that you were ever sixteen years old? I feel like I started out formed the way I am today and when I think of myself at 16 I feel like I was a little adult. But, I was two steps out of childhood and a few years away from being a grown up. I don’t really remember what this felt like. To me, it felt the same as today feels, just with slightly less wisdom.

This song came out when I was sixteen and I remember seeing the video at my friend’s house and being so impressed with how good Belinda looked. As a huge Go Go’s fan, I had always thought of Belinda as a sisterly type and here she was serving up 80’s Grace Kelly at an LA beach and sounding better than she had in a long time. The vibrato was a little weird, but this song was just so poppy and gorgeous.

BUFFALO STANCE BY NENEH CHERRY

Once upon a time in 1989 there was a moment where downtown was the place to be. Club culture was at its 80’s nadir and the kids were out in full force whether or not Lisa Lisa was there. The first of sibling one hit wonders Neneh and Eagle Eye Cherry’s hits, Neneh’s Buffalo Stance was pulling everyone to the dance floor. All you needed was something new and expensive, something from a thrift store and some cocaine and the night would be yours.

To this day, I think I’m cooler for having known and loved this song. It should be a classic and I wonder if any youngs even know it. To me it still sounds fresh (or is that phresh?) but that could just be me desperately clinging to youth,. The whole talking bit in the middle, the breakdown, it’s all good and it’s all in there. This was hip hop from across the pond back when hip hop was still finding its legs.

What is he like, anyway?

THIS WEATHER BY PATRICK WOLF

It is really, really raining. I just went to grab a coffee and a croissant and I’m soaked. This is a gloomy day best spent indoors drinking tea and staying warm. Which doesn’t sound so bad, does it? Take a long gander out the window and listen to this song.

Patrick Wolf has a very interesting catalogue of songs. For a boy genius, he’s pretty great and this one is really beautiful, melodramatic and intense. Some of his stuff totally misses the mark for me, but when it hits it is so damned good. And this song is perfect for today.

REBEL GIRL BY BIKINI KILL

It seems as if this has NOT been the year of the woman. As a dude, I do what I can to empower, lift and generally support my sisters. I see a lot of anger out there in the “Battle of the Sexes,” and I seem to remember this being a thing when I was a child. I would love to see peace, equality and respect between everyone and I know when I’m talking to people about stuff like pay equity, Cosby, Gomeshi, Planned Parenthood, Women’s access to healthcare, and consent that most of us seem to be on the same page regardless of gender, sexuality, etc. Can’t we all just figure it out?

Now whatever gender you are this song is a rally cry to kick ass and to love all the cool chicks around you. Kathleen Hanna’s vocal on this is so good. My favourite version is the one on Pussy Whipped and this should have been a hit single. Alas, it remains a great theme for Riot Grrls everywhere.

They say she’s a dyke, but I know she’s my best friend:

Anagrams of the Stars

I’LL LICK MY LEGS

I had a friend (I hope she’s reading this) who had great lesbian conspiracy sex theories. Like, she’d bust out with, “I heard that Kristy McNicol walked in on Kelly McGillis and Jodie Foster while they were filming Silence of the Lambs.”

These situations always seemed a little far-fetched, not because of the lesbianism or anything but because of the combos of ladies and the fact that it was always someone walking in on two or more other ladies.

To this day, I use this as a joke. Try it, it’s fun. Use the Golden Girls. Or any three or four female celebrities and come up with your own story. Try and spread it around town like it’s truth.

I don’t see the chick who came up with these hilarious stories (in fact there were probably only two, but more likely just one) as much as I used to, and I miss her and love her. This one is for her.

LOLA STARS AND STRIPES BY THE STILLS

This gorgeous little number is the best song on this forgotten album. I owned the CD, listened to the shit out of it, and somehow in the transition to digital stuff I overlooked this little gem. The vocal on this is an amazing croon and the shambolic way the melody jangles along is the perfect counterpoint to the singing.

The lyric seems to inhabit an interesting place between love song for a lady and indictment of the whole US Military Industrial Complex plus a soupcon of love for the non-existent American Dream. Big stuff and themes that I always dig in a pop song.

So, yesterday, I went to a banquet to celebrate my Aunt for all the work she has done in the Labour Movement and was moved, impressed, and generally bowled over at how fucking awesome she is. I knew she was, of course, but to be in a room full of people who fight the same fight year after year speaking of her and applauding her made me realize what a dynamo I've got in my own family. Kudos.

Lola, Lola, will the world end me and you?

Can you take me back to that place where stars glow? Comets swarm like fireflies outside your window:

Oh My God! I Totally Love This Song!

OPERATOR (THAT’S NOT THE WAY IT FEELS) BY JIM CROCE

So in Grade 1 I bought my first record that wasn’t a kids’ record. It was the Jim Croce’s greatest hits and I loved it. This song is one of my favorites and recently I woke up from a deep sleep singing it. I think part of the reason I liked it so much was that he was dead. Looking at an artist’s work through the lens of their untimely death makes them very interesting to me. Even then it did.

The 70’s were a great time to grow up because everyone was mellow and it was just an easier time. I long for those golden, long days of 1975, you know what I mean?

I recently heard this on the TV series Transparent from Amazon (nobody’s paying me for this plug) and was reminded of how good it is. Transparent stars Jeffery Tambor as a man with three kids who is transitioning to becoming a woman and we see how his family deals with this and their own problems. Good Stuff.

The number on the matchbook is old and faded:

DIAMONDS BY RIHANNA

So this song came out quite a while ago, but the first time I heard it I thought it was so good that I had to ignore it for a while or something would happen. I’m not sure what I thought would happen, but imagine something in the neighborhood of heads exploding or just falling over dead. This song is that fucking good.

One of the things I really like about Rihanna is that she keeps improving. You can’t really say the same about her Pop sisters. I suppose you could say she sucked when she first showed up, but I don’t know, she’s OK in my books. I’m almost a fan. And she has some songs that are gorgeous.
