The worldwide competition NanoArt 2009 is open to all artists 18 years and older. The online exhibition will open for public on January 20, 2010.

Jurors: Dr. Pilar Irala (PhD, History of Art), world renowned photographer, expert on contemporary art, photography, and new technologies, and member of the International Association of Art Critics; apart from her activity as international photographer, Art critic and curator, she is currently Professor of Photography and Contemporary Art at San Jorge University (Spain) and co-director of the contemporary photography and music ensemble animAMusicae; Guillermo Muñoz, physicist and PhD candidate in Photonics, works in the field of Nanotechnology at Material Science Institute of Valencia University (Spain); he is part of the 'Piratas de la Ciencia' science communication group and is working as moderator for the international Art and Science network Yasmin; recently, he curated the NanoArt exhibition 'Nanoconfluencias: miradas artísticas hacia lo infinitamente pequeño'.

For the 4th edition of this competition, nanoart21.org founded by artist and scientist Cris Orfescu (www.crisorfescu.com and www.absolutearts.com/nanoart) will provide 3 high resolution monochromatic electron scans of nanosculptures created by him. The participating artists will have to alter the provided image(s) in any artistic way to finish the artistic-scientific process and create NanoArt work(s). The artists and scientists are strongly encouraged to participate with their own images as long as these visualize micro or nanostructures.

The artists can participate with up to 5 images (artworks). All submitted works will be exhibited on the nanoart21.org site until March 31, 2010, together with artist's name, a short description of the artistic process, and artist's web site and e-mail. The top 10 artists will be exhibited on nanoart21.org site for one full year and will be invited to exhibit at the 3rd edition of The International Festival of NanoArt. The previous editions of the festival were held in Finland and Germany

NanoArt is a new art discipline at the art-science-technology intersections. It features nanolandscapes (molecular and atomic landscapes which are natural structures of matter at molecular and atomic scales) and nanosculptures (structures created by scientists and artists by manipulating matter at molecular and atomic scales using chemical and physical processes). Cris Orfescu ( http://www.crisorfescu.com/ ) and winners from all 3 editions of the NanoArt International Online Competition ( http://www.nanoart21.org/ ) have been invited to exhibit at the EuroNanoForum 2009, June 2-5, in Prague, Czech Republic.

Frances Geesin (UK), Bjoern Daempfling (Germany), Carol Cooper, Eva Lewarne (Canada), Chris Robinson, Darcy Lewis, David Derr, David Hylton, Renata Spiazzi, Fred Marinello, Philip Brun Del Re, Ursula Freer, Diane Vetere, Steven Pollard (USA), Teja Krasek (Slovenia), Imameddin Amiraslan (Azerbaijan), and Teresa Majerus (Luxembourg) will show their works at this event. 36 prints and 2 multimedia works will be exhibited in diferent locations at the Prague Congress Center.

EuroNanoForum 2009 is the 4th conference of a set of international nanotechnology conferences organized within the framework of national Presidencies of the European Union. The conference will be hosted at the Prague Congress Centre, as an official event of the Czech Presidency, under the auspices of the Czech Ministry for Education Youth and Sports and with the support of the Industrial Technologies Program of the European Commission. Focusing on "Nanotechnology for sustainable economy", EuroNanoForum 2009 will address the contribution and challenges of nanotechnology research for a sustainable development of European industry and society, such as the need for reduction in carbon emissions and fossil fuels dependence, the substantial increase in energy demand, pollution control, clean water management and sustainable quality of life of the European citizen, as well as material production sustainability and efficiency. NanoArt by Orfescu at the Prince of Asturias Awards

Cris Orfescu has been invited to exhibit NanoArt to the 2008 Prince of Asturias Awards at the Campoamor Theatre in Oviedo, the capital of Asturias, Spain.
The Prince of Asturias Foundation has conferred its Awards yearly ever since 1981. They are intended to acknowledge scientific, technical, cultural, social and humanitarian work carried out internationally by individuals, groups or organizations in the following eight categories: communication and humanities, social sciences, arts, letters, scientific and technical research, international cooperation, concord and sports. H.R.H. Felipe de Borbón, Prince of Asturias and Heir to the throne of Spain is the Honorary President of the Foundation that bears His name since its creation in 1980. The aim of the Foundation is to contribute to encouraging and promoting scientific, cultural and humanistic values that form part of mankind's universal heritage. Bob Dylan, Al Gore, George M. Whiteside, Google, National Geographic Society, Maya Plisetskaya, Woody Allen, Paco de Lucia, Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, Lance Armstrong, Vittorio Gassmann, Yehudi Menuhin, Michail Gorbachev, Carl Lewis, are among the winners since the beginning of the award. The award presentation ceremony is considered as one of the most important cultural events in the international agenda. The 2nd International Festival of NanoArt

The 2nd International Festival for NanoArt organized by NanoArt21 (http://www.nanoart21.org/) will be hosted in Stuttgart, Germany by NAHVISION Institute for International Culture Exchange, between November 1st and November 30th, 2008. NanoArt and Photography in the “Energetic Light” Multimedia Show

Orfescu's NanoArt work will be featured in the “Energetic Light” multimedia and still images exhibit presented by El Camino College, in California. The show brings together several forms of art, NanoArt, Photography, and Multimedia, by eight South Bay artists. It is an interesting parallel between the images created by light waves or light particles (photons) as in Photography, and the images created by much more energetic particles, like electrons (electrically charged particles) as in NanoArt. The electrons penetrate deeper inside the stuctures and generate images with more depth, more natural 3D.
NanoArt is a new discipline which combines art with science to create sculptures at molecular and atomic levels. Artists and scientists use chemical or physical processes to create these works, and the resulting micro and nanostructures are visualized with powerful research tools like scanning electron and atomic force microscopes. These scientific images are then captured and further processed, using different artistic techniques, to convert them into artworks to be showcased for the general public.
The El Camino show artists have extracted selected still images from their multimedia pieces and framed them along side the multimedia display for comparison. The exhibit also demonstrates how carefully selected music and image movement further enhances great still images that depict subjects as large as fireworks bursts and as small as nanosculptures that are approximately 80,000 times thinner than a human hair.

The exhibition opens in the Schauerman Library on Saturday, May 3rd and runs through June 15th. The library is in the center of the El Camino College campus, which is located at 16007 Crenshaw Blvd. in the city of Torrance, California. The exhibit is open from 7:30 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. Monday through Thursday, from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Friday, and from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Saturday.

Orfescu's NanoArt - Digital Mural

Commuters coming to Boston on the Massachusetts Turnpike now have a new landmark: a large LED digital mural outside WGBH's new studio complex in Brighton. Every day, from 6:30 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., the digital mural features a new image or series of images drawn largely from that day's TV or radio programming on WGBH or from other sources of content that reflect WGBH's mission. Embedded in the building's exterior wall, the approximately 30-foot-by-45-foot display of light-emitting diode (LED) panels is visible to eastbound MassPike travelers from approximately a mile and a half away.WGBH is a public service media for New England on TV, radio, the Web, and out in the community. WGBH is the single largest producer of PBS prime-time and online programming, and a major source of programs heard on public radio from coast to coast.
In honor of the Cambridge Science Festival, on April 26 the WGBH's digital mural will feature the work of Cris Orfescu.
This festival is the first and only full-scale celebration of science and technology in the United States. During nine days in April, the City of Cambridge erupts with 200 free & open events designed to excite, engage and educate the public.
As part of this year's Cambridge Science Fair, the Boston Museum of Science will be featuring NanoArt, an exhibition intended to promote a greater understanding of nanotechnology among the general public. Nanohedron will present a slide show featuring Orfescu's works along with other nanoartists.

NanoArt and Nanotechnology - New Frontiers

One of Cris Orfescu's NanoArt multimedia works will be showed at the University of Florence, Italy, during the Italian Week of Science, at the begining of March 2008. The event features an open dialog between contemporary art and science, focused on Nanotechnology.
Principal themes to be discussed during this event are:

1. The scientific imaginary and aesthetics of contemporary art in growing up knowledge economy.

2. The development of nanoscience and new forms of artistic fruition in contemporary era.

Dr. Paolo Manzelli, the Director of LRE/EGO-CreaNet, the organization which sponsors the event, hopes to receive a broad cooperation in achieving a shared program for improving a trans-disciplinary dialogue between science and art by paying special attention to the development of Nanotechnology and NanoArt, in collaboration with NanoArt 21 founded by Cris Orfescu - http://www.nanoart21.org/

NanoArt 2007 is Open for Public VOTE

37 nanoartists from 13 countries and 4 continents sent 121 NanoArt works to this second edition of the international competition. Public online voting is now open through March 31, 2008 at http://www.nanoart21.org/. Judging is via the Internet and decided by the site visitors.

This artwork has 2 layers: the background layer is the original “nanoflower” image, and the foreground layer is a computer simulation of a Belousov-Zhabotinsky reaction (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Belousov-Zhabotinsky_reaction). To produce this artwork the foreground layer’s BZ reaction is modified so that it is tied to the background layer’s image in such a way that bright regions of the image act as if they are sources of reactants consumed by the BZ reaction. By suitably adjusting the BZ simulation parameters a foreground animation (5 cycling frames) of a “fizzing” reaction can be created, which is then rendered using appropriate colours and transparencies. Optionally, instead of displaying the full 5-frame animation as an artwork, its individual frames can also be used as artworks.

NanoArt Exhibit at Nanotechnology Forum

A NanoArt exhibit will be open during the Nanotechnology forum organized by NanoBioNexus on December 13, 2007 at Moores UCSD Cancer Center in La Jolla, California.

First, the NanoTumor Center will host a nanotechnology forum with exciting speakers (see below). Immediately following, celebrate the holidays with fine food, festive beverages and a special preview exhibit and sale of NanoArt hosted by world renowned artist Cris Orfescu. A portion of the proceeds will support NBN outreach programs. Also, join us in the spirit of giving and support the “Toys for Tot” toy drive by bringing a new unwrapped toy. Cris Orfescu will exhibit NanoArt at the Walsh Gallery in the Eye Tricks show. At this event will be shown also works by another NanoArt pioneer, Jack Mason.

Part art and part optical illusion, this exhibition curated by Jason Marquis and Jeanne Brasile will fascinate and delight audiences with an array of art that fools the eye through a number of scientific and illusory means. Orfescu's work is a reflection of the new technological revolution, and is aimed to raise the public awareness about the Nanotechnology and its impact on our lives. The Romanian-born American artist is showing his works in galleries all over the world. NanoArt is a new art discipline related to the micro or nanosculptures created by artists or/and scientists through chemical or/and physical processes and visualized with powerful research tools like scanning electron microscopes and atomic force microscopes. The scientific images of these structures are captured from the advanced microscopes mentioned above and further processed using different artistic techniques to convert them into artworks showcased for a large audience. NanoArt should not be confused with microphotography which is performed using an optical microscope with a photographic camera attached to it and renders flat images at low magnification. The depth and three dimensions achieved in NanoArt sets this imaging process apart from Photography where images are created by photons (particles of light) rather than by electrons (electrically charged particles) as in NanoArt. The electrons penetrate deeper inside the structure creating images with more depth, more natural 3D-look than the photographic images.

The Five Continents Artists Meeting is organized by the French artists association Les Seize Anges. Two art exhibitions will take place during the event. The first one will be hosted by Atelier Grognard, one of the main cultural centers in Rueil-Malmaison, positioned in the vicinity of the Malmaison Castle, the house of Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte. Prestigious exhibitions have taken place here: Dali, Chagall and Weisbush in 2005/2006, Picasso, Matta and Malraux in 2007. The second show will be hosted by the Villepinte Espace V gallery. NanoArt Works in Two Events in South Korea

Cris Orfescu will exhibit some of his NanoArt works in South Korea in two events organized by the ASTO Museum of Art.
The first event is the “2007 Gwangwhamoon International Art Festival (GIAF)” in the vibrant capital city of Seoul, the epicenter of art and culture. GIAF will take place in Seojong Center between April 25 to April 29, 2007 (opening on April 25th). This is considered to be the best art festival in Seoul.
The second event, “ASTO International Art Festival (AIAF)” will be hosted by the National Assembly Library of Korea, in Seoul between May 2 to May 24 (opening on May 2nd).
These two art festivals will include over 50 international artists as well as approximate 100 artists from Korea. The events are sponsored by Korean Artists Association, Seoul Foundation of Arts and Culture, Ministry of Culture and Tourism, Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, Korea Tourism Organization, Arts Council Korea, KBS, Ambassade de France en Coree, British Embassy, Japanese Embassy, Chinese Embassy, Spanish Embassy, and other organizations.

I create Art from Science using Technology. My art is a reflection of the technological movement. I consider NanoArt to be a more appealing and effective way to communicate with the general public and to inform people about the new technologies of the 21st Century. NanoArt is intended to make the public aware of Nanotechnology and how will this impact our lives. Nanotechnology deals with the synthesis, manipulation and characterization of matter at the sub-100 nanometers level. Nanotechnology is still an emerging area although commercial products are already on the market. Nanotechnology is a very powerful combination of technologies that could be extremely beneficial or extremely dangerous, including life threatening. I think the best approach to control things is by gaining Knowledge. Not only governments and military should know about these developments, but the general public at large should be informed. My images being attractive to the public from the esthetic point of view awaken the curiosity of my audience. As a result, people ask questions and have open discussions around these new technologies, and this is good because people will take informed decisions.
I bring the small world in front of my audience through high resolution electron microscope scans of natural micro or nano-structures and nano-sculptures I create by physical or/and chemical processing. I paint digitally the monochromatic electron images and print them with archival inks on canvas or fine art paper. This way, the scientific images become artworks and could be showcased for a large audience to educate the public with creative images that are appealing and acceptable.
NanoArt is not Photography. The depth and three dimensions achieved in NanoArt sets this process of electron imaging apart from Photography, where images are created by photons (particles of light) rather than by electrons (electrically charged particles). The electrons penetrate deeper in the structure creating images with more depth, more natural 3D-look than the photographic images.

This is the first ever online NanoArt worldwide competition open to all artist 18 years and older. The purpose of this competition is to promote NanoArt as one of the new art disciplines of the 21st Century. NanoArt is a new art form where micro/nanosculptures created by artists/scientists through chemical/physical processes and/or natural micro/nanostructures are visualized with powerful research tools like Scanning Electron Microscopes. The monochromatic electron microscope images are processed further to create a piece of art that can be showcased for a large audience to educate the public with creative images that are appealing and acceptable. In these days, anyone could have access to these advanced tools at universities or independent labs for an hourly rate. For this competition, the sponsor, nanoart21.org founded by artist/scientist Cris Orfescu (www.absolutearts.com/nanoart), will provide a high resolution monochromatic electron scan. The participating artists will have to alter this image in any artistic way to finish the artistic process and create a NanoArt work.
Submission deadline is December 31st, 2006.
The artworks entered this competition will be displayed online for voting starting January 1st, 2007 through March 31, 2007. Judging is via the Internet and decided by our site visitors. The sponsor reserves the final decision. Winners will be notified and published online around April 15, 2007.
One entry is allowed per artist. The Entry Form and the image file for web presentation should be sent by email to mailto:criorf@verizon.net. The web image file must be .jpg or .gif with the longer dimension of maximum 600 pixels at a resolution of 72 dpi. A Working Image of approximate 3000 x 2300 pixels at a resolution of 72 dpi will be provided by sponsor. NANOART at the International Festival of the Image

Cris Orfescu's work has been selected to be exhibited at the 5th edition of the International Festival of the Image initiated in 1997 by the Caldas University in Manizales, Colombia, in April 2006.
From the 18 to the 21 of April of 2006, Manizales will vibrate again with the magic of the images that will flood the city. Designers, visual artists, investigators in new media, and the public in general will enjoy one week where the most important advances in the interactive technologies will be appraised together with concerts of electronic music, robotic facilities and digital exhibitions. The Festival is the space for the democratization of the image and the technology and is the place for critical analysis and debates in the Latin American context.
