The 5th International Festival of NanoArt - Heraklion, Greece

The 5^th International Festival of NanoArt organized by NanoArt 21 ( http://nanoart21.org ) was hosted in September-October 2018 in Heraklion, Crete Island, Greece, by the Technological Educational Institute of Crete (TEI) in cooperation with The Hellenic Photographic Society of Crete. The show was curated by artist/scientist Cris Orfescu (USA / Romania) founder of NanoArt 21 and artist/scientist Mirela Suchea (Romania / Greece). The previous editions of the festival were held in Finland, Germany, and two editions in Romania. The artworks authored by artists from Brazil, Canada, Germany, Greece, Netherlands, Romania, Slovenia, UK, and USA were exhibited in the Hellenic Photographic Society’s gallery. The artworks were donated to TEI Crete to establish the second permanent gallery of NanoArt. At the show opening, a collection of aerogel sculptures by Ioannis Michaloudis was exhibited. Also, the Moon Ark, the artifact that will be landed on the surface of the Moon in 2020 and left there for good was presented by Mark Baskinger and Dylan Vitone. The Moon Ark contains the Moon Museum, the first art museum on the surface of the Moon. 93 NanoArt works authored by 50 artists from NanoArt 21 group were selected to be featured in this museum.

The 1st Permanent Exhibition of NanoArt

The first permanent exhibition for NanoArt organized by NanoArt 21 opened at Alexandru Ioan Cuza University in Iasi, Romania. On display are artworks from the last two editions of the International Festival of NanoArt.

In September 2018, the 5th edition of the festival will be organized in Heraklion, Crete Island, Greece.

In parallel, the 12th International Conference of Physics of Advanced Materials will host a session of Art - Science - Technology at the Technological Institute of Crete in Heraklion.

"These artworks are part of the 3rd and 4th editions of the International Festival of NanoArt organized by NanoArt 21 - founded by artist and scientist Cris Orfescu - and hosted by the International Conference on Physics of Advanced Materials. The International Conference on Physics of Advanced Materials (ICPAM) is a biennial event organized by the Faculty of Physics of Alexandru Ioan Cuza University of Iasi. The past two editions took place in Iasi (ICPAM-10, 2014) and Cluj (ICPAM-11, 2016). Since 2014, ICPAM introduced the Art, Science and Technology topic to improve communication among scientists, artists and engineers involved in visual arts, and to create new opportunities for exploration of new digital virtual creativity by promoting the development of the current artistic movements and tools. These artworks were donated by NanoArt 21 to Alexandru Ioan Cuza University of Iasi."

NanoArt and Photography in Paris - Parallel between Two Imaging Techniques

Cris Orfescu exhibited NanoArt in Paris for the first time in 2007 in three group shows, one of them at the prestigious Atelier Grognard next to Château de la Malmaison, Empress Josephine's castle. The shows have been organized by the art group Les Seize Anges.

NanoArt will be shown again in Paris this year, in two photography shows. It is going to be an interesting parallel between two different imaging techniques: NanoArt (electrons) and Photography (photons). The first show will take place at the exhibition hall of the 8th municipal arrondissement (Mairie du 8eme Paris) between Nov 7 and Nov 18. On Nov 8 will be the opening for "Bridges between Continents and Memories". The second exhibition will be hosted by Mu Gallery, 53 Rue Blanche (close to Moulin Rouge) between Nov 22nd and Dec 17th. The opening is on Nov 22nd.

NanoArt Exhibition in Santa Monica, California

Today was the opening reception for the NanoArt exhibition on the Art Wall at the Unitarian Universalist Church in Santa Monica, California. The show curator, Beverly Alison, wrote in the show program: small things are a big deal this October as we exhibit works by nanoartist Cris Orfescu. As Orfescu mentions, "... with more than 70 percent of the people in the U.S. using products incorporating nanotechnology, I want people to know about it and I hope my art stirs their curiosity to find out more". The exhibition will be open until October 29th.

Art-Science-Technology Conference at the 4th International Festival of NanoArt

Some of the works exhibited in the 4th International Festival of NanoArt will be included in the Moon Arts Project presented in the Art-Science-Technology section during the 11^th International Conference for the Physics of Advanced Materials (Nanomaterials). The section was chaired by Cris Orfescu and featured papers by Prof. Chris Robinson from the University of South Carolina, researcher Alessandro Chiolerio from the Italian Institute of Technology in Torino, mathematician/artist of hermay.org Jean Constant, and Prof. Ioannis Michaloudis from Charles Darwin University, Australia. Orfescu, in his invited paper, presented “The NanoArt 21 Project”, and educational and research tool and venue founded 12 years ago to promote a new artistic-scientific discipline, NanoArt, as a vehicle for a better understanding of nanotechnology.

Robinson presented “The Moon Arts Project, Nanotechnology and Contemporary Art”. The Moon Arts Project as part of the Google Lunar X Prize tags along on an ambitious competition to send a privately funded rover to the moon. 46 artists from the NanoArt 21 group will have their artworks included in that rover. Michaloudis presented “Nanosky on the Moon”. Using silica aerogel nanomaterial he is creating clouds sculptures that could improve the public perception of scientific research and climate change. Some of his bottled aerogel nanosculptures were exhibited during the festival.

Chiolerio was talking about his collaboration with artist A. Scali to create two lithographs of a few hundred nanometers etched on two silicon chips. Constant presented “The fourth dimension in mathematics and art” focusing on the challenge involved in the visualization process of 4D objects.

The 4^th International Festival of NanoArt organized by NanoArt 21 ( http://nanoart21.org ) was hosted last month in Cluj-Napoca, Romania, by the University Babes Bolyai. The show was curated by artist/scientist Cris Orfescu (USA) founder of NanoArt 21 and artist/scientist Mirela Suchea (Romania). The previous editions of the festival were held in Finland, Germany, and Romania. Around 70 artworks authored by artists from 11 countries have been shown in the University Exhibition Hall. The artworks were donated to Alexandru Ioan Cuza University of Iasi, Romania, who hosted the 3^rd edition of the festival. The exhibition is designed to be a travel show to spread around the country and eventual Europe this new art discipline. The next show is tentatively scheduled to be held in Bucharest, Romania, next July, and will include more artworks that will be added to the portfolio.

During the month of September 2016 in Venice, California, Trunk Gallery hosted the Art-Science show enTANGLEment featuring works by Ann Erpino, Amy Helene, Randi Hokett, and NanoArt by Cris Orfescu. The exhibition curators were Bob Nidever of UCLA and gallery director Ann Perich. The early opening during the Mar Vista Art Walk draw a large audience and raised interest in Art-Science intersections.

The first Steam³ Science (Science + Tech + Engineering + Arts + Math "cubed") was a unique public event held on March 1st and 2nd, 2014 at the University of Texas, JJ Pickle Research Campus. The event presented a comprehensive look into the future of experiential learning providing an interactive stage for the exploration and demonstration of the fast emerging approaches, formats, technologies, and learning models that will redefine education over the next decade.

Beside and art exhibit and a scanning electron microscopy demo, thanks to the generosity of Hitachi, Cris Orfescu presented a paper on NanoArt as one of the most effective tools to introduce Nanoscience and Nanotechnology to students and general public. The paper presented the first uses of nanomaterials and nanotechnologies to create art, the beginnings of NanoArt, and the actual status on this new artistic-scientific discipline and movement that evolved from recent technological developments in the multidisciplinary area known as nanotechnology. It also informed the audience about the international juried NanoArt competitions, festivals, and exhibitions. Thoughts of select nanoartists and art people in the regard to NanoArt were also presented.

Jurors: Dr. Anatoli Korkin (PhD in Physics from Moscow Lomonosov State University) is Associate Research Professor at Arizona State University and President of Nano & Giga Solutions, a company that provides research and software development in the area of computational chemistry and materials design for nanotechnology applications and consulting and project management in nanotechnology education, science, and innovation; Hugh McGrory is an Irish filmmaker/photographer and a NanoArt pioneer who has built a strong reputation for innovation through experimentation. He was filmmaker in residence at the Toomre Lab’s CINEMA microscopy department, Yale University School of Medicine for summer 2007, researching, collecting and creating moving images of the living cell and exploring the wider area of scientific imaging. He is now the Creative Director of Culture Shock Marketing in New York City.

Winners will be notified and published online on May 31, 2011. The competition will be promoted on different venues online, nanoart21.org contacts, word-of-mouth. The artists could also promote the competition on their websites and other venues.

For the 5th anniversary edition of this competition, nanoart21.org founded by artist and scientist Cris Orfescu (www.crisorfescu.com) will provide 3 high resolution monochromatic electron scans of nanosculptures created by Orfescu. The participating artists will have to alter the provided image(s) in any artistic way to finish the artistic-scientific process and create NanoArt work(s). Passion for Knowledge is a festival that brings world leading scientists and humanists together from different disciplines and cultures to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Donostia International Physics Center under the commitment for progress of science driven by the love for knowledge. About the Artist:

Cris Orfescu was born in Bucharest, Romania, and has lived and worked in Los Angeles since 1991. A scientist by day, he runs an analytical laboratory which uses nanotechnology to design improved lithium batteries. The molecular landscapes of various materials with which he works, measured in nanometers, are his inspiration and jumping-off point for his art. Using an electron microscope, he manipulates compounds and chemicals to create nano-sculptures, captures the images, which he then blows up into large artworks, digitizes, and applies color. A self-taught artist, he has been experimenting for over 40 years with different media and art forms, including digital art, murals, acrylic and oil painting, mixed media, and collage. 'NanoArt', a term he has coined, reflects the transition from Science to Art through Technology. The worldwide competition NanoArt 2009 is open to all artists 18 years and older. The online exhibition will open for public on January 20, 2010.

Jurors: Dr. Pilar Irala (PhD, History of Art), world renowned photographer, expert on contemporary art, photography, and new technologies, and member of the International Association of Art Critics; apart from her activity as international photographer, Art critic and curator, she is currently Professor of Photography and Contemporary Art at San Jorge University (Spain) and co-director of the contemporary photography and music ensemble animAMusicae; Guillermo Muñoz, physicist and PhD candidate in Photonics, works in the field of Nanotechnology at Material Science Institute of Valencia University (Spain); he is part of the 'Piratas de la Ciencia' science communication group and is working as moderator for the international Art and Science network Yasmin; recently, he curated the NanoArt exhibition 'Nanoconfluencias: miradas artísticas hacia lo infinitamente pequeño'.

EuroNanoForum 2009 is the 4th conference of a set of international nanotechnology conferences organized within the framework of national Presidencies of the European Union. The conference will be hosted at the Prague Congress Centre, as an official event of the Czech Presidency, under the auspices of the Czech Ministry for Education Youth and Sports and with the support of the Industrial Technologies Program of the European Commission. Focusing on "Nanotechnology for sustainable economy", EuroNanoForum 2009 will address the contribution and challenges of nanotechnology research for a sustainable development of European industry and society, such as the need for reduction in carbon emissions and fossil fuels dependence, the substantial increase in energy demand, pollution control, clean water management and sustainable quality of life of the European citizen, as well as material production sustainability and efficiency. In this respect, nanotechnology presents many opportunities and challenges that have to be analyzed at international level through a safe, responsible and integrated approach, as first presented by the ENF2003 conference.

NanoArt is a new art discipline at the art-science-technology intersections. It features nanolandscapes (molecular and atomic landscapes which are natural structures of matter at molecular and atomic scales) and nanosculptures (structures created by scientists and artists by manipulating matter at molecular and atomic scales using chemical and physical processes). These structures are visualized with powerful research tools like scanning electron microscopes and atomic force microscopes and their scientific images are captured and further processed by using different artistic techniques to convert them into artworks showcased for large audiences. The worldwide competition NanoArt 2008 is open to all artists 18 years and older. The online exhibition will open for public on January 20, 2009. Judges: Jeanne Brasile, artist, director and primary curator of the Walsh Gallery at the Seton Hall University; Rocky Rawstern, artist and consultant, former editor of Nanotechnology Now, awarded with the 2005 Foresight Institute Prize in Communication. Winners will be notified and published online after March 31, 2009. The competition will be promoted on different venues online, nanoart21.org contacts, word-of-mouth. The artists could also promote the competition on their websites and other venues.

For the 2008 edition of this competition, nanoart21.org founded by artist and scientist Cris Orfescu (http://www.crisorfescu.com/) will provide 3 high resolution monochromatic electron scans for competitors to choose from. The participating artists will have to alter the provided image(s) in any artistic way to finish the artistic-scientific process and create NanoArt work(s). The artists and scientists are strongly encouraged to participate with their own images as long as these visualize micro or nanostructures.

The artists can participate with up to 5 images (artworks). All submitted works will be exhibited on the nanoart21.org site until March 31, 2009, together with artist's name, a short description of the artistic process, and artist’s web site and e-mail. The top 10 artists will be exhibited on nanoart21.org site for one full year and will be invited to exhibit at the 3rd edition of The International Festival of NanoArt. The previous editions of the festival were held in Finland and Germany.

NanoArt by Orfescu at the Prince of Asturias Awards

Cris Orfescu has been invited to exhibit NanoArt to the 2008 Prince of Asturias Awards at the Campoamor Theatre in Oviedo, the capital of Asturias, Spain.
The Prince of Asturias Foundation has conferred its Awards yearly ever since 1981. They are intended to acknowledge scientific, technical, cultural, social and humanitarian work carried out internationally by individuals, groups or organizations in the following eight categories: communication and humanities, social sciences, arts, letters, scientific and technical research, international cooperation, concord and sports. H.R.H. Felipe de Borbón, Prince of Asturias and Heir to the throne of Spain is the Honorary President of the Foundation that bears His name since its creation in 1980. The aim of the Foundation is to contribute to encouraging and promoting scientific, cultural and humanistic values that form part of mankind's universal heritage. Bob Dylan, Al Gore, George M. Whiteside, Google, National Geographic Society, Maya Plisetskaya, Woody Allen, Paco de Lucia, Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, Lance Armstrong, Vittorio Gassmann, Yehudi Menuhin, Michail Gorbachev, Carl Lewis, are among the winners since the beginning of the award. The award presentation ceremony is considered as one of the most important cultural events in the international agenda. Throughout its history, these awards have been honored with different recognitions, such as UNESCO’s declaration in 2004 acknowledging the extraordinary contribution of these awards to mankind's cultural heritage. This year, the grand presentation ceremony is to be held on Friday, October 24th at 6:30 pm.

The 2nd International Festival of NanoArt

The 2nd International Festival for NanoArt organized by NanoArt21 (http://nanoart21.org/) will be hosted in Stuttgart, Germany by NAHVISION Institute for International Culture Exchange, between November 1st and November 30th, 2008. The show is curated by artist/scientist Cris Orfescu (USA) and art professor Dorothea Fleiss (Germany).

NanoArt K12 Program

The NanoArt K12 program has been launched by NanoArt 21 in collaboration with The Nanotechnology Group. The purpose of this worldwide program is to support the education of the new generations of artists and scientists and to promote the art-science-technology intersections and NanoArt for a better youth development. nanoart21.org founded by artist and scientist Cris Orfescu (http://www.crisorfescu.com/) is providing 3 images of nano or microstructures for children and teens to convert them into works of art through any artistic technique. The electron micrographs depict graphite micro and nanoparticles.

All artworks will be posted on the NanoArt21 exhibition site, and the best works will be selected to be shown in physical galleries worldwide.

NanoArt and Photography in the “Energetic Light” Multimedia Show

Orfescu's NanoArt work will be featured in the “Energetic Light” multimedia and still images exhibit presented by El Camino College, in California. The show brings together several forms of art, NanoArt, Photography, and Multimedia, by eight South Bay artists. It is an interesting parallel between the images created by light waves or light particles (photons) as in Photography, and the images created by much more energetic particles, like electrons (electrically charged particles) as in NanoArt. The electrons penetrate deeper inside the stuctures and generate images with more depth, more natural 3D.

NanoArt is a new discipline which combines art with science to create sculptures at molecular and atomic levels. Artists and scientists use chemical or physical processes to create these works, and the resulting micro and nanostructures are visualized with powerful research tools like scanning electron and atomic force microscopes. These scientific images are then captured and further processed, using different artistic techniques, to convert them into artworks to be showcased for the general public.

The El Camino show artists have extracted selected still images from their multimedia pieces and framed them along side the multimedia display for comparison. The exhibit also demonstrates how carefully selected music and image movement further enhances great still images that depict subjects as large as fireworks bursts and as small as nanosculptures that are approximately 80,000 times thinner than a human hair.

The exhibition opens in the Schauerman Library on Saturday, May 3rd and runs through June 15th. The library is in the center of the El Camino College campus, which is located at 16007 Crenshaw Blvd. in the city of Torrance, California. The exhibit is open from 7:30 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. Monday through Thursday, from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Friday, and from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Saturday.

Orfescu's NanoArt - Digital Mural

Commuters coming to Boston on the Massachusetts Turnpike now have a new landmark: a large LED digital mural outside WGBH's new studio complex in Brighton. Every day, from 6:30 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., the digital mural features a new image or series of images drawn largely from that day's TV or radio programming on WGBH or from other sources of content that reflect WGBH's mission. Embedded in the building's exterior wall, the approximately 30-foot-by-45-foot display of light-emitting diode (LED) panels is visible to eastbound MassPike travelers from approximately a mile and a half away.WGBH is a public service media for New England on TV, radio, the Web, and out in the community. WGBH is the single largest producer of PBS prime-time and online programming, and a major source of programs heard on public radio from coast to coast.

In honor of the Cambridge Science Festival, on April 26 the WGBH's digital mural will feature the work of Cris Orfescu. This festival is the first and only full-scale celebration of science and technology in the United States. During nine days in April, the City of Cambridge erupts with 200 free & open events designed to excite, engage and educate the public.

As part of this year's Cambridge Science Fair, the Boston Museum of Science will be featuring NanoArt, an exhibition intended to promote a greater understanding of nanotechnology among the general public. Nanohedron will present a slide show featuring Orfescu's works along with other nanoartists.

NanoArt and Nanotechnology - New Frontiers

One of Cris Orfescu's NanoArt multimedia works will be showed at the University of Florence, Italy, during the Italian Week of Science, at the begining of March 2008. The event features an open dialog between contemporary art and science, focused on Nanotechnology.

Principal themes to be discussed during this event are:
1. The scientific imaginary and aesthetics of contemporary art in growing up knowledge economy.
2. The development of nanoscience and new forms of artistic fruition in contemporary era.

Dr. Paolo Manzelli, the Director of LRE/EGO-CreaNet, the organization which sponsors the event, hopes to receive a broad cooperation in achieving a shared program for improving a trans-disciplinary dialogue between science and art by paying special attention to the development of Nanotechnology and NanoArt, in collaboration with NanoArt 21 founded by Cris Orfescu - http://nanoart21.org/

NanoArt 2007 is Open for Public VOTE

NanoArt is a new art discipline at the intersections of Art, Science and Technology, and relates to the micro or nanosculptures (atomic and molecular sculptures) created by artists or scientists through chemical or physical processes and visualized with powerful research tools like scanning electron or atomic force microscopes. The scientific images of these structures are captured and further processed using different artistic techniques to convert them into artworks showcased for large audiences.

37 nanoartists from 13 countries and 4 continents sent 121 NanoArt works to this second edition of the international competition. Public online voting is now open through March 31, 2008 at http://nanoart21.org/. Judging is via the Internet and decided by the site visitors.

This site was founded by the artist and scientist Cris Orfescu (http://nanoart.org/) to promote worldwide the NanoArt as a reflection of the technological movement. This artwork has 2 layers: the background layer is the original “nanoflower” image, and the foreground layer is a computer simulation of a Belousov-Zhabotinsky reaction (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Belousov-Zhabotinsky_reaction). To produce this artwork the foreground layer’s BZ reaction is modified so that it is tied to the background layer’s image in such a way that bright regions of the image act as if they are sources of reactants consumed by the BZ reaction. By suitably adjusting the BZ simulation parameters a foreground animation (5 cycling frames) of a “fizzing” reaction can be created, which is then rendered using appropriate colours and transparencies. Optionally, instead of displaying the full 5-frame animation as an artwork, its individual frames can also be used as artworks.
