Irie Method's Forum Success

There was an electric moment at the Tunbridge Wells Forum last night when Irie Method played the opening bars of their first song of the set, Run.
The already pumped crowd were on their feet and raring to go for Irie thanks to The Djangos, self proclaimed as 'bigger than Jesus', Hey Joni with their stylish 'twinkly-emo' and Tower Hill's indie-pop.
Irie Method were the undisputed stars of the night however. It's not difficult to see why The Forum won the NME's Best Small Venue Award this year: a forest of hands and an ocean of closely packed leaping bodies met Irie's mix of reggae-indie-pop, and Rivett's opening bass line in Auntie Valerie had the masses screaming before Osbourne had even breathed a single lyric. Fox's punchy Caribbean-style drumming evoked the reggae tunes of Bob Marley and McConkey's lilting, Kook's-like guitar created a delicious blend of contemporary and modern. The teasingly-energetic lead singer Osbourne got the audience eating out of his hand and truly owned the stage and The Forum as a whole.
McConkey said of the atmosphere: "we've never been infront of a crowd like that, either alone or as a band,"
"The two other gigs we've done have been a battle of the bands, and a free gig in Alexandra Park at 10am on a saturday morning, so the forum crowd was pretty special" the guitarist continued.
When asked what the future has in store for the band, McConkey said, "I honestly have no idea. We have some bigger things planned though, so watch out, Irie's about"

If one thing can be said for sure, then it's that Irie Method has cemented a die-hard fan base from an already enthusiastic following. Watch this band: they're going places.

Why you should Think Twice about Journalism as a Serious Career

Hey you.

Yeah, you.

Can you write to a basic standard?
Do you enjoy embellishment?
Do you like shouting at people, both figuratively and literally, until you get what you want?
Do you like making people cry?
Would you like to be a journalist?
If you answered yes to any one of those questions, then it's probable you have thought about, at one point or another, pursuing a career in journalism.
If you have, but swiftly dismissed it with a nervous laugh and a 'Oh, you', then you are one of the lucky ones. If you have, and thought of dusty newsrooms, rows of clattering typewriters on wooden desks and a fatso with a cigar clamped between his teeth wearing a sweaty shirt and braces waving his arms in the air shouting "hold the front page!", then congratulations, you are a romantic. Also, you are going to be sorely disappointed. Here's why.

You're not going anywhere fast.

It's your first day out of 'Varsity. You're young, hopeful, and look like Leonardo Di Caprio (bear with me here). Getting a job at a newspaper is as easy as knocking on the door and asking to write a story, right?
Wrong.

Handsome as Leonardo Di Caprio? Dream on.

It's all about the contacts. Unless you happen to be the love child of the honourable Rupert Murdoch (We've all been there!), you can kiss writing your big piece goodbye and say hello to five years of making coffee for that guy with the cigar and reservoirs for arm pits before printing a sentence. It's as easy as climbing a greased ladder with Scar perching at the top

What? I've got hay-fever.

Don't worry though, if you stick with it for long enough, that guy will be making you coffee!
Please God.

Nobody respects journalists any more.

I love the smell of hearsay in the morning.

Let's say you've managed to climb that ladder, and you've got your first story. Great! It's time to pull on your trilby complete with 'Press' ticket, grab your flip-notebook and pen and start getting sources.
Good luck finding anyone to talk to you, though.
Somebody ruined the beautiful, magical world of journalism for everyone by thinking it would be fun to have a look at everyone's voice mail, or had a bet to print a newspaper with so much hateful bigotry per paragraph that it's almost funny but isn't because it's depressing called The Daily Mail. Because of this, the perception of journalists has descended from the truth conveying word-smiths once held as the champions of free speech to desperate, hateful, bottom-feeding liars.

Paper will soon be a thing of the past.

Ok, so journalists are no longer respected. Big woop. Spending all my time honing my writing skills has cut me off from my social network anyway. At least I'll still get the satisfaction if seeing my name in print, a million times, delivered to the doorstep of every home in the country as the sun rises on another day, right?
Firstly, as admirable as it is that you're still a romantic after all the metaphorical punches I've been delivering to your naive face, it's probably time to get your head out of the clouds.
Secondly, have you heard of the internet?

It's pretty swell.

That 'series of tubes' that brings you cats with poor grammatical skills, videos of people walking in to low ceilings and even your beloved Facebook are also bringing about the end of newspapers as we know it.
The sales of newspapers have been plummeting for some time now, as readers realise that the internet can give them the same information, more of it, instantly, and for free.

"What's this? Trouble in the colonies?"

Newspapers have been losing advertising revenue to the internet through sites the likes of eBay and Craigslist. Many have had to adapt or die; laying off staff and hastily assembling pay walls on their websites, and some of those that were too slow have already bitten the dust, particularly metropolitan and local newspapers.

If you're still here from the few that weren't put off at the beginning of this post, and still raring to get you're teeth into journalism, then you're either very stupid, or got the bare faced balls to turn the whole industry around. Good luck to you, sir.
In the mean time, I'm going to keep writing right here about things I have a very basic knowledge of. Viva la Blog!

Why Propeller Planes are Pleasantly Terrifying

It was with dread we learned that our plane would be sans-jets, opting for the less efficient blender blades that would throw us towards the continent green faced and white knuckled.
Our type of plane is thoughtfully named a Bombardier, leaving the Flybe passenger to use their imagination why.

"Why did we buy this crap-heap"

You can pull out all the nervous flyer superlative similes for rge Bombardier; steel tube coffin, ticket to hell, ad. nauseum. I've never been a nervous flyer, seeing as I've been pushed, pulled and occasionally trampled into planes since an early age, but meeting a prop for the first time brewed a strange apprehension within me.
As soon as you get over this apprehension however, it's really quite enjoyable. Whilst gazing out of the airport at our all-inclusive fun tube, fellow passengers jovially commented upon its over all safety, casually betting on how likely they were to die if, when, this vibrating cylinder should pull the classic 'screw you guys' and part ways with its wings, unleashing the windmills of death into the atmosphere.
As a sort of rite of passage, photographs were taken by each ticket holder before they boarded as if it were the first picture of a depressingly empty holiday photo album, "and this is Ma and Pa before they were transformed into milkshake by the propellers after the window swapped places with the seat".

All up in yo business.

It was all fun and games of course, apart from when taxiing the sun hit the spinning propellers creating a dizzying strobe effect that made me wish I had packed my glo-sticks after all.
The only time I did feel scared, just a little, was when roaring down the runway. I calmly speculated, with a tinge of regret, whether the last words I would have spoken would be "that's my sandwich you're eating", and whether being flung from a plane like a scrunched up paper ball aimed at a bin from the back of the classroom whilst struggling to open a BLT was a particularly bad ass way to go.

If you enjoy sky high roller coasters, ignore the metal blades whizzing behind your ear and don't mind the nerves in your feet being obliterated by the floor vibrating like a mobile phone on steroids, then I recommend giving propeller planes a go.

A peculiar thing happened last September.

I'm a worrier by nature, so I worry about near enough everything.

Not quite, spell-checker, not quite.

That is until September 2011, when, the stress reached a peak, then... pop. It completely vanished. Ironically, I began to worry about the sudden absence. Had a small part of my brain exploded? Why didn't I care so much any more? I just didn't know.

You confuse me. Screw you.

I'm not sure where I'm going with this, but seems life is a bit better as a half human half robot.

Has Sony stepped up it's legal aggression in a post hack world?

On the 4th of April, 2011, Sony Corporation made a dangerous enemy.
They gave out this message, which, with all its melodrama, probably made the intern at Sony who read it laugh himself hoarse before disregarding the warning.

I know I wouldn't take these mask wearing goons seriously.

16 days later, Sony found itself in the biggest media hack scandal shit storm of the decade.

Aforementioned intern, and Sony collectively also.

On the 26th of April, Sony put it's hands in the air and admited a booboo.

A big booboo.

77 million booboos to be exact.

77 million names, addresses, email addresses, birth dates, PlayStation Network/Qriocity passwords and logins, handle/PSN online ID, profile data, purchase history and possibly credit cards, were, er, 'misplaced'.

So who was responsible for this massive security breach? And why?

(It wasn't Gordon Brown's fault, for once)

You can now access the BTD YouTube here by clicking on the image to play the video rather than following the link which is slower than your gran in a foot race. Watching the embed is much faster, and you can still watch it in full screen/ HD as you would normally.
DVDs are now being crapped out at a painful pace, but excreted none the less. It contains just about everything you can imagine to do with the BTD, all for just £2.50. And it has the Spanish Flea as it's menu music. But don't let that influence your decision.

That's just about it for BTD Updates on LK Blog, unless something else goes horrifically wrong. You can still find all the videos in the Berlin Trip Documentary tab that's knocking about up there.

Well, a lot has happened in the past week!
As soon as the BTD spent all night uploading was made public on YouTube, members of the LK Blog Facebook Page alerted me to the fact that the video was banned due to music copyright. Which is BRILLIANT obviously.
So now I'm looking at other video sharing websites and have decide on Dailymotion as the new home for the Berlin Trip Documentary.
To apologise for all this crapiness, I have made two Billy O'Ward A'Broad episodes public on YouTube (This one and this one). I'm also getting hold of some more DVD cases.

The Berlin Trip Documentary is now finished, weighing in at a healthy 49 minutes and 15 seconds.
Bad News!
The Film has been rendering for 5 minutes and is only on 3%
More Bad News!
Once at the film has finished rendering, it will need to be uploaded to YouTube, which will take forever.
The Verdict!
I may need to upload the BTD tomorrow, and I still need to make the remaining Billy O'Ward A'Broads, deleted scenes and other spin-offs. So a long while yet until it's all done. At least I have finished editing!

Annoying Noire?

In case you haven't heard of it, L.A Noire is Rockstar's (who made ground breaking free-roam Red Dead Redemption and the infamous Grand Theft Auto series) new video game, set in post-war 1940's America in Los Angeles. The game is inspired by the detective film noire style of the period.
It uses some fancy facial-recognition do-da to use real actors' expressions in the game.

Which is all very impressive, until I noticed a striking resemblance in the technique. Observe.

My New Favourite Hobby

I have found a new way to amuse myself.
I am now pretending that there are hidden cameras around my home; behind mirrors, stowed in the corners of the ceilings, a la Big Brother.

Is this what the plebs do? Nope, no idea either.

Every time I pass one of these 'cameras', I wink in acknowledgement or make a secret hand signal.
My family think I am schizophrenic. I can't help but agree.

Things have been a politically uneasy in Egypt for a while, but it was the recent Tunisian unrest and subsequent government overhaul that kicked things off.
The bad guy here is President Hosni Mubarak of the National Democratic Party, who has been in rule for 30 years.
People in Egypt are unhappy because poverty, food prices and corruption, as well as many young Egyptians out of work.

The Bad News......... and the Good News

Bad - On the 28th of January, the Egyptian government pulled the plug on mobile phone services and the internet, denying access to crucial social-network protest media, such as Facebook and Twitter

Good - Millions of young people take to the streets in 'Day of Rage', International news keeps protesters point of view heard (Al-Jazeera)

Bad - Around 300 deaths in Egypt caused by clashes between protesters, pro-Mubarak supporters and the police. Wide spread looting and Antiquities at risk of damage. Attacks on journalists by pro-Mubarak condemned by UN (UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon: "scandalous and totally unacceptable,"), some seriously injured.

Good - Protests show no sign of letting up fight, massive swell in patriotic pride. Human chain formed around Cairo Museum. Army in cities maintain order.

Bad - President Mubarak still refuses to step down

Good - He promises to leave in September, wants an orderly take over. Protesters still not backing down. Muslim Brotherhood likely to take over (who are they?)

What could happen next?

Mubarak may leave, the army will take control and secure country. However, armed islamist groups may thrive

First Tunisia, now Egypt; could Libya, Syria, Jordon and Morroco be next? With similar problems, (ie. unemployment) and a large young internet community, quite possibly.

Yesterday, bloggers, was unofficially known as Black Ops Saturday. Millions around the globe plonked themselves down in front of their Playstations, Xboxs and Wiis, all playing their cherished, shiny new Call of Duty game. At long last, after months of waiting, it was time to play Black Ops.

Brothers, Fathers and Uncles gambolled home on Friday at a frightening pace as soon as they could tear themselves away from school or work.

Upon explaining what one’s purpose was, the simple nod of ‘Black Ops!’ answered all.
5.6 million copies screamed off of the shelves at the speed of a Blackbird. In just the first 24 hours.

This fast.

Put simply, the Call of Duty franchise is one heck of a big deal.

For the last year or so, I’d like to think that I have been fairly tolerant of the American Whingey-Teenager series Glee.

But then, God help us all, the covers. THE COVERS. Walking on Sunshine. Lean on Me. Sweet Caroline. All good songs, raped and pillaged by the auto tuned nasal bitches at Glee.

At least, as I regularly comforted myself, they haven't touched Bohemian Rhapsody.

Today being the 11th of September, the 9th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks on the USA, so the Top Trending Tweets on twitter are scattered with #God Bless America, #Twin Towers and #Never Forget.

In case you have been living under a rock, you've probably heard about this guy.

And this book

And what he wants to do with it.

Yep, this is the story of the American pastor Terry Jones, who wanted to make Burn a Koran Day in his church in Gainesville, Florida.

Despite pretty much everyone in the world telling him not to be a total idiot, including General David Patreaus, the US Military big cheese and the Archbishop of Canterbury , he insisted on continuing his slightly messed up fete plans, ignoring the risk of anger form the worldwide Islamic community, specifically in Afghanistan, where, lets face it, things aren't to hot at the moment.

Thankfully, Jones called off the event today because, according to what he told NBC, God was telling him to stop, and left the families of the victims to a peaceful day. By God he probably meant President Barack Obama, who also told him to stop being a dingbat.

So why did Jones want to chuck a couple of Qurans in a bonfire?

Controversy has risen over the last few days over the planned placement of a mosque near to Ground Zero, the location of the Twin Tower 9/11 attacks and today's memorial service.

Many found this decision untasteful and insulting, demanding that the mosque be moved to another location.

Perhaps its worth taking this opportunity to point out that 63 Muslims died in the 9/11 attacks, and doubtless hundreds will work in the new World Trade complex that is currently under construction.

I'm sure you know this already, and you're sick of hearing this, but Islamic terrorists are an incredibly small proportion of all Muslims, who condemn their acts of terror the same way we do.

Suddenly, it seems that the remembrance of 9/11 and everything associated with the World Trade Center has become exclusively Christian. This just doesn't seem fair.

The muslims that will work at the World Trade Center need somewhere to worship near their offices the same way Christians and Jews may need a Church or Synagogue.

We recognize that the terrorists responsible for 9/11 were Muslims. This does not mean all Muslims rejoice in the idea of terror.

Prejudiced Americans need to grow up, or run the risk of insulting more Muslims that change their favour towards malicious groups and activities.

Rant over, may our thoughts be with the families of the victims of the attacks.

Why can’t I get to sleep?!

I’ve tried everything.

I’ve arranged my sock drawer.

I’ve watched repeats of failblog videos.

I’ve read, and re-read, the prologue in Twilight.

I’ve counted pterodactyls.

I’ve named my stuffed animals.

I’ve talked to my gnome collection.

I've counted t-rex's.

I've listened to all my iPod songs. Twice.

I've eaten raw cookie dough.

I've eaten cheese; reverse pschology doesn't work. AT ALL.

I've cried at Titanic.

I've re-enacted Star Wars.

I AM YOUR FATHER.

I've dressed up as Captain Jack Sparrow.

I've dressed up as Michael Jackson.

I've dressed up as Shrek.

I've dressed up as a Pritt Stick.

It’s so late, even my hamsters are asleep. And hamsters are nocturnal.

What do I DO?!

I even downloaded an app that helps you go to sleep.

IT’S NOT WORKING!

I’ve even looked up why I could be having this problem. One website says that trying to fall asleep is why you can’t sleep. Well that makes perfect sense.

Another is that you can spend too much time in bed. That, um, doesn’t apply to me. It’s not like I get up at 2pm everyday or anything…

One tip for helping with insomnia is not to have any bright lights in your room. Computers don’t count do they?

It seems that last night, the 27th to the 28th, the people of the UK, as an entity, could just not nod off.
I could. Slept like a baby in ruhipnol*. But it seems a majority couldn't.

Social Networking sites such as Facebook were buzzing with unnatural nocturnal activity; status updates reading 'Why cant I Sleep?' plastered Walls and News Feeds. 'Cant Sleep' became a Top Trend on Twitter.

But why did this happen?
The LK Blog presents some possible explanations.

An evil Lithuanian genius switched around everybody's body clocks as a protest for the rise in peanut butter prices in his country: the direct result of David Cameron's baby being born in Cornwall this week.
Gordon Brown, still bitter from his ousting, has followed through on his vow to plant a virus that encourages insomnia in the water taps of Britain as an act of revenge on his hateful public
A conspiracy perpetrated by The LK Blog to keep the public staying up all night waiting for posts that come every three weeks or so by playing a frequency through the bloggers speakers.
A result of incessant use of technology (yes, that means posting on Twitter or Facebook when sleep dosent come) I may not actually be bull****ing.

It was on a fine, warm afternoon that I decided to change my Sunday routine. The tempting calls of the PlayStation were ignored, a bike pulled from the garage and a fetching helmet donned as I emerged rather wobbly from my house eager to hit the country paths of Sussex.
The bike's brakes squeaked in complaint from being pulled rather suddenly and rudely from its retirement, and the chain chattered and clanked as it struggled to find its gears as I pedalled up the road.

Of course, this joy may be tainted for some by the recent defeat of England in the World Cup. Unfortunately, England is not the team we say it is. It's the cycle of building them ourselves before the World Cup to expect to win or do really well, and when they don't, we go crazy at England for not winning.
