MAINSTREAMING BLACK-OWNED BUSINESS

It was Toni Morrison who said something to the effect of, "You would make one think that I am not mainstream." She said this in response to being asked why there isn't significant white representation in her stories. Surely, her white counterparts have never been asked why they don't include noteworthy black people in their stories.

As a black person, I find it insane to imagine that ANYONE would put our beloved Toni Morrison in a category, otherwise, but the same can be said for anything black, including businesses.

Mainstream /mān,strēm/ (noun) is the ideas, attitudes, or activities that are regarded as NORMAL or conventional; the dominant trend in opinion, fashion, or the arts.

It is time we normalize even the thought of frequenting a black-owned business. There are many black-owned businesses, and since the world's recent challenges, there are a plethora of black-owned businesses being created.

Power of the Monologue: Nicholas G. Sims (Actor)

I love Instagram! There. I said it. It's not about the likes or the views or even the follows, though. It is about the relationships I would not, otherwise, have the opportunity to nurture. In the industry of entertainment, it really is about who you know. My DM is where I met Nicholas G. Sims.

GETTING TO KNOW NICHOLAS G. SIMS

I have to be honest, I don't know much about him outside of the fact that I was impressed with his monologues. I was also inspired by his belief in himself and that he was not afraid to connect and network. It is my opinion that if you are not helping someone, you are not living. That is what Filmmakers Lab is all about.

Nicholas fearlessly linked me with two very powerful monologues, in their own right, that would intimidate the best of actors. The first monologue was Bel-Air x 1994, Sims take on the scene made famous by Will Smith when his character's father (Ben Vereen) came back into his life for a moment and left just as fast. Sims did a great job of bringing forth some of the raw emotions felt in the original scene. He was very present and lured me into a scene that I knew very well. I expected a lot and received much. My only critique would be Sims' emotions overshadowed the words and at times his enunciation was difficult to understand. Otherwise, the performance was solid.

Did I mention, the projects were self-directed? Sims is the kind of filmmaker other filmmakers wish they were because he has taken the time to craft his monologues in a professional and cinematically sound way, not asking for permission or waiting for someone to cast him. He has taken control of his own destiny and is doing the work.

SIMS' MONOLOGUE REPERTOIRE

Now, let's talk about Sims' rendition of Horde's character in the film, Split. Being totally transparent, I had no idea what this monologue was about or where it came from. After doing some research, I realized it was an M. Night Shyamalan film that deals with the split personalities of Kevin Wendell (James McAvoy). I was impressed at Sims' ability to take me through a gamut of emotions in this one scene. Sims held my attention the whole way through and I understood every word. Actress Chloe Broeker did an awesome job emoting a genuinely horrifying sense of terror.

SIMS NOT AFRAID TO STRETCH

When I think about why Sims would choose this monologue, I understand how this would show his range. Recreating a scene such as this is no easy feat. The mind must go dark, to reach the depths of where your soul has to go, to achieve a great performance in this scene. This was just one scene. Imagine how spent James McAvoy must have been filming this movie.

Big props and handclaps to my new friend Nicholas G. Sims for producing two great monologues. I am anxious to see some more from him. Stay focused and keep up the great work!

CREATING CREATIVITY CREATIVELY: WHERE YOU BEEN COLLEEN

I know, I know, it has been way too long. I'm sorry. The universe has had me trapped in my apartment stuck to my chair and computer. I have been creating like a maniac! I love being creative and I am learning to stay where my wheelhouse takes me. I can't do it all even though I have tried.

My book, about the reason why copyrights are not really effective in protecting your work is coming soon. Very soon! Thank you for all the support thus far. Also, look for my next book My Nine Eleven, my story about my experience in Manhattan when the Twin Towers fell and how it still haunts me after all these years.

Also, look for posts for the movie I script supervised called His, Hers and the Truth coming to theaters. The cast is on a media tour and screening the film. If you live in Atlanta or surrounding areas I will post when screenings are coming.

I rocked out in 2018 and now I have time to create my own. This year started phenomenally and it has not quit!

I appreciate all my friends and family that have supported me thus far. I pray that I make you all proud! Stay up and write on!!!

As an independent filmmaker, one of the best forms of networking is screening your projects. Screening Room ATL is always looking for the best in indie films. It is a great way to self-promote and it gets all facets of filmmaking folks in the same room to talk shop, partner up and promote each other's projects.

FILMMAKERSLAB Film Review Friday: #Victoria

Screening Room ATL is one of my favorite networking events. Every Wednesday, indie film shorts, and trailers are shown on the upper level of the posh restaurant, Negril Village, which boasts a cathedral-style building complete with an outdoor patio and metered parking lot. The two-tiered establishment serves up affordable authentic Caribbean eats, while the best of indie film shorts play on two screens.

FEATURE FILM REVIEW: #VICTORIA

This week on the Filmmakers Lab roster is the action-filled drama #Victoria played by Vanessa Fant and written and directed by Mark Buddington. This true-to-form tale tells the story of a daughter who moves from out of town, to live with her father, in a poor inner city of New York. The story deals with Victoria's inheritance of her father's tainted legacy. Victoria's father's shady reputation is littered with distrust, drugs and dirty money.

Fant did an awesome job of portraying a young woman, who is forced into the throws of an unfamiliar, dangerous world. She makes you sympathize with Victoria and want her to get revenge. Fant's performance pushes the audience to question how they would handle that kind of situation. Fant's portrayal of Victoria was believable. We wanted her to win despite her tactics.

Property of United Millions

Khalimah Gaston, who plays Victoria's friend, Kim, committed fully to her ride or die character. Gaston said the hardest part was handling the gun, but without hesitation she pulls that hammer back with confidence, further showing her range. Both Fant and Gaston's performances were spot on in their portrayal of naïve impressionable young women turned wanna be weight pushers.

All in all it was a solid, well-directed film. #Victoria kept me engaged and unsuspecting. The action sequences were not overrun with beats and fluff. I appreciate Buddington's straight-to-the-point writing style. The subplots had loose ends, but for the most part, Buddington served us urban drama, raw and true. Buddington has a solid handle on the art of storytelling. Check out his website at unitedmillions.com. Amongst Buddington's vast arsenal, I found a gem called Preto. Look out for that review. It seems so long ago when we filmed Artful Dodger. I might not remember everything about that weekend, but I do remember it was one of the most mentally/emotionally challenging times of my life. I treated it as a gauge. If I made it to the end loving the process, then I would continue pursuing a career in writing. There were times when I wasn't sure if this was what I was supposed to be doing. When you ask God, he will reveal all.

It was not an easy task by any stretch of the imagination. We had so many obstacles. This was my teams' first time participating, but even with all its challenges, it was not our last.

Fast forward two years to the present and two 48-hour-films later, Eyes Entertainment sits down with Screening Room ATL to discuss their first film.

SCREENING ROOM ATL FILM NETWORKING EVENT

If you love to watch short films and interested in the local film talent in Atlanta, check out the Screening Room ATL at Negril Village, a chill, laid back space, that Atlanta folk come to talk film.

The film I co-wrote, will be showing, Wednesday, October 11, 2017!! I am beyond stoked. This is the first film I had the chance to write with some other talented writers.

It was a film for the 48-hour-film project produced and shot by Eyes Entertainment, director, Hakim Robinson and actress, ReGina Nicole. It was film boot camp if you will, and when it was all over, you knew whether film was your chosen path.

Despite the challenges we encountered, we produced a great entertaining short! If you didn't get the chance to see it on the big screen, come see it at the Screening Room ATL where you can network, eat and drink. Come out and support the arts!

Film Review Friday: The Wish & The Wisp is Sure to Please at Sundance

When my cohort in the business told me we were going to a film screening at AIU, I was ready. I did not know what to expect, but I remained completely open.

Well, I wasn't ready. I was not ready for The Wish & the Wisp, the film short written/ directed by the creative mastermind, Vashmere Valentine. I was blown away from beginning to end. I was fully engaged, amazed and entertained.

This is a movie for EVERYONE and trust me it has all the ingredients for a great film short. The poster alone is intriguing. Don't you want to know what a wisp is?

The clever storyline takes you through a gamut of emotions, will have you on the edge of your seat, and frustrate you to no end, in a good way, and literally, there is no end. I can easily see this short taking the form of a franchise film or television show.

The Wish & the Wisp intertwines genres seamlessly. The idea is stretched, but not to unbelief and the direction was superb giving endless angles and shots providing the most incredible character POVs.

It has been said that working with kids can be challenging, but this perfectly put together cast makes this film a sure standout. The characters will draw you in immediately. They had me from the opening frame. Everything, from the way the main character wears her lovely afro to the set makeup, I was completely enthralled. The young cast will make you feel their emotions. I think it's safe to say, they have no idea how good they are and just how much their skills are going to change their lives.

UPDATE: 11/1/2018

Just like I said a year ago, the Wish and the Wisp has shown great at the film festivals. Vashmere Valentine and I will have a sit down coming soon to talk about all the accolades the Wish and the Wisp have garnered. I can't wait for the masses to see it!!

Music G.A.W.D.S. Magazine is Changing Lives

The new online magazine, Music G.A.W.D.S. (Gifted Artists With Dope Skills) is more than a magazine. Through their events, they have brought what was their internet presence to the public in a more tangible and effective form.

By holding what the CEO, Shantell Charisma, deems an experience, the creators of the magazine bring all the greatness of entrepreneurs, vendors, performers, speakers/coaches and food to the masses in a free, to the public, monthly event.

As well, participants are treated to live Sirius XM radio sound bytes with Help4Men host, Martin Jongue, and a slew of attendees in which to connect. Attendees are educated with the best of the best coaching from local and out-of-town speakers, who have been changing lives for the better with great compelling and unique information.

Those in attendance will not only get a production-styled show from awesome talent both local and from surrounding states but are also pampered with the finest cuisine Atlanta has to offer cooked up by Iron Waffle Creations. Make no mistake, this is not just for those in the music business. The May event speakers talked about how to repair credit (and not your run of the mill send out dispute letter info). There were fitness and health coaching on how to make it through the day if you work from home and live a sedentary lifestyle and the crowd (which was thick) was treated to the sounds of some awesome musical talent.

Director/Writer Clint Till's Film Big and Tall Gives Minorities a Voice

One winter ago, Clint Till found his way to my Periscope while I filmed, with my Galaxy Note 4, the two feet of snow that fell that January in New York. I was humbled as I didn't think anyone really cared to see snowfall from the second floor of my parents' home. Clint told me he was curious as to what other indie filmmakers were doing. Our conversation was brief, but I left feeling encouraged and inspired. I soon found that he was super talented and genuine. I thought, "I want to stay connected to this guy." (See Clint's Reel).

Clint has many accomplishments that are noteworthy, but I am not here to brag about the awards he has been granted or the short films he has completed or even the 48-hour-film project he won. (That one made me a bit sore as I was entered the same year.) I want to introduce you to his current film and why you want to be a part of it.

Clint's film Big and Tall is an adventure about a young girl, Molly, who believes Bigfoot lives nearby her home in the woods, and she gets help from her friend Devon to get proof. The film is in preproduction. It is a tale of dedication and faith.

This light-hearted, family film showcases a diverse cast of actors giving voice and exposure to women and minorities in an industry where they are largely underrepresented. The lead is a strong female character portrayed by a young Asian actor. Her on-screen friend Devon is a young African-American & her on-screen mom is a hard-working, independent single parent.

Qaydi is funny by nature, not taking things too seriously, except for the lyrics she spits. This girl can rap and she sings equally as well and YES, she writes her own lyrics.

If you are not familiar with the Urban Movie Channel, then you should get acquainted. It is a video/movie streaming web site that is filled with all sorts of videos/movies about historical and present day achievements about people of color.

There is a segment called Change Makers that features those that are doing their part to contribute positively to the world. The best thing to come out of the Cosby era is this woman, Keisha Knight Pulliam. She has been an inspiration, since she was a little girl.

Seafood Grits The Food for Writers

The writer's life can be hectic. Sometimes we go several hours and longer without sustenance. Between long hours researching information for a project or spending time on set, the need for a proper diet is essential. I love to cook and sometimes I break the rules, but for the most part my partners and I eat pretty healthy. Chicken, fish, salad, veggies and fruit pretty much make up our diet. I slip in a carb here and there, but my favorite food besides crab legs is grits. I don't know why but I love grits with cheese. You have to try out these seafood grits. They are wonderful. I first tasted them at a restaurant in Atlanta called Pappadeaux. The brunch menu is sick. I have no idea what type of seafood is in their grits, but I wanted to try my own recipe. The picture below is what I use.

I used these smaller shrimp this time but I don't particularly like the taste and normally use the bigger ones (raw not peeled or deveined) and just cut them into smaller pieces but these are all I had on deck. This is what I do.

1. Cook the grits.

2. (Tilapia) Fry my fish (season to taste) chop into small bite size pieces.

To season fish I use pepper, Sazon, onion powder, garlic powder and parsley flakes.

3. Saute (season to taste) shrimp in butter, minced garlic and green onions. Add the garlic just before fish is done because they WILL burn.

To season shrimp use lemon pepper, garlic powder, Old Bay seasoning and Sazon.

4. Add the sauteed shrimp and fish to the grits and mix.

5. Add cheese. (Optional)

It is up to you what type of shrimp or fish you use. I found that Swai, catfish and salmon taste best. You can even mix them all. I have done this and it was out of this world. Make a cup of green tea (decaf by Salada) and there you have it. Breakfast fit for writers. It is filling. I am not so sure of the nutritional value, but I do know that it tastes really good. Filmmaker Rahiem Shabazz's Call to Action: Black People Must Educate Their Children

Once we become conscious of what is innate, greatness can be achieved. If we are blessed enough to be introspective, we know that we have to create our own opportunities. We learn not to be a burden on our people and become prepared to utilize resources to push social change to eradicate the thought that there are no alternatives. Using critical thinking is the key and not apologizing is the stance, but how do we deal with those that don't understand their inborn sources are truly being tampered with? My recent conversation with filmmaker/producer and owner of Rasha Entertainment Inc., Rahiem Shabazz, shed some light on the topic of genocide and its relevance in the educational system and how underhanded this tampering is.

From an early age while attending public school, Shabazz was able to discern between memorization and actually learning. He didn't do well in school. "I barely attended." Still, Shabazz understood the importance of education. Our ancestors told the story over and over again, and he was a student of their teachings.

Shabazz also knew that knowledge was not going to come from a textbook about a man who claimed to have discovered America. Unfortunately, Shabazz was one of many that fell victim to the school-to-prison pipeline, the shameful school system that forces teachers to teach a standardized curriculum, one that is set up for failure.

Fortunately, Shabazz was given the chance to better himself. In doing so, it set off a chair of life events that would bring to light the core of this atrocity. During his six-year incarceration, he went to college and graduated in the top 5% of his class.

"When we know better we do better."

Armed with his byline, knowledge of self and the love for his people, Rahiem Shabazz has been making some noise in the film sector with his series of documentaries Elementary Genocide (The School-to-Prison Pipeline) and Elementary Genocide 2 (The Board of Education v. The Board of Incarceration) specifically geared to bring awareness of educational genocide and its effects. Shabazz has been given the opportunity to flex his writing prowess on the pages of The Source, XXL and Vibe Magazines in pursuit of spreading understanding and providing solutions to this crisis.

Shabazz has been touring all over the United States screening the documentaries to diverse audiences and giving lectures to open up talks about this very important subject. According to Shabazz, all ethnicities have been receptive to the documentaries. It is Shabazz's opinion that, "People want to be on the right side of history." Most are concerned, if nothing more, that the school-to-prison pipeline exists and is in full effect.

Shabazz enlightened me on the statistic comparing the public school system encompassing 85% black students taught by 70% white teachers. I wanted to know if the teachers were even aware what they are teaching is culturally biased and created to siphon black children directing into the belly of the beast. Shabazz revealed that most become teachers to make a difference, but are met with resistance when they want to veer away from the curriculum.

I don't want to give away the essence of the documentaries, but it is no secret that our educational system gets a D-rating. Shabazz has been working tirelessly to bring awareness, and he does offer the solution of homeschooling. Shabazz is aware that a lot of people do not have the ability to home school, but he believes a child's education starts at home and continues at home after school has ended.

With various awards under his belt, respect among his fellow journalism peers, an apprenticeship under Roger Bobb and the opportunity to interview the likes of Tyler Perry, 50 Cent and Magic Johnson, Shabazz's wants his archival files to reflect that he used his innate ability to make a difference, he was a credit to his race and he made sure he broke the generational curse in teaching our children and adults about the African American heritage.

Thank you Mr. Shabazz for always being true to yourself. It was refreshing and enlightening, the talks we have had. It is my hope one parent is informed, and they tell another parent and so forth. Once we have been made aware of something, we can't act like we don't know. Notice has been served.

I Am Not Going to Mourn for Prince

I am not one to mourn people. I don't like the sad emotion, at all. I might still be in shock, but I am not going to cry over Prince dying. I am not even going to be sad. If you don't like to celebrate the life one has lived, this is not the post for you, but if you do, check out Rolling Out Magazine's DeWayne Rogers Flash Back Friday radio clip of Prince talking about the skit Dave Chappell did on his show. WHO, WHAT & WHY

The showrunners for the production of the TV show Millennials need your help to bring this show to fruition. This dramamedy is told mainly from the point of view of millennials. This show will delve into prevalent, but not always spoken, extremely important topics that affect this generation, and how they deal with these obstacles, if at all.

If you are the parent of a millennial, you will want to be involved with this project. As well, we all know someone that is a parennial. I just made that up! Seriously though, there is a gigantic gap in communication between them and older generations. If nothing more, it will bring about discussion on what really makes millennials tick and how to relate to them.

WHY?

This show will delve into issues, not necessarily unique, but are important and have to eventually be addressed. Millennials will focus on topics that touch on mental illness, suicide and racism. Why do many millennials suffer from anxiety? Why aren't some learning the lessons of yesteryear? Why are millennials so unapologetic? The bridge of this generational gap, in particular, is the most significant, in my opinion, and one that has to be closed quickly. The future of the world depends on it.

I read this article written by Penelope Bartlett and I was compelled to share with all my women filmmakers that need the support we so often go without. We have to start supporting each other more.

Please take your time and read through this article that Bartlett so graciously put together. It is chock full of information on support that women can get through different organizations especially designed for us.

It took me years to find my voice. Now, you can't get me to shut up. It would bother me when I thought no one was listening. Only until recently I felt almost invisible.

What I realize is people are listening. It is just not the people we expected. One of my goals is to assist those women and men in navigating their careers as artists to get the shine we all deserve. Shout out to all the independents out there! Find your spot at Filmmakers Lab

If you have ever felt like you wanted to teach someone a lesson this film short will leave nothing to be desired. The surprise ending will make you laugh and think. I am one for always lending a helping hand. I believe it is why I exist. But, why do we really help others? What is the human aspect of helping people? I had to think about it really hard after watching this film. Without giving it all away, two men's paths cross one homeless, the other very successful. They chat, but it is not the greatest conversation, and my first thought was the successful man was going to help the homeless man and be on his way. Personally, I feel any homeless person brave enough to ask for money deserves every penny they receive. It is on them what they are going to do with it. At any point, anyone and I mean anyone of us can be homeless. Millennials TV Show Still Has to Fill the Roles of Kunji and Carol...

If you missed the casting for the new TV show Millennials you have missed a great opportunity. I apologize for not being on top of this one and posting to my blog before the casting was held. There are still a couple of roles that have not been cast. The role of Kunji has not been filled as I am writing this post. Also, the role of Carol is up for grabs.
