A Day in Namibia Africa

I woke to the sound of birds singing birdsong that I did not recognize, but it was very tropical sounding and beautiful. Then I remembered that I was in Namibia, Africa!

I rushed to get dressed, hoping that I might have a bit of quiet time and a bit of time to take a few pictures that were not from the inside of a moving van.

The birds were different, the sounds were different, the smells, the buildings, the plants and trees were different. Even the leaves on the trees were different. If you look at the picture above you will see they look like angel wings. These were mopane trees.

The staff threw out seed for the birds and this attracted many. I was having a great time trying to capture them with my camera.

This is the building where we ate a dinner of grilled oryx and African pumpkin the night before. The food was delicious.

This is where several men had gathered around a fire the night before to visit.

I saw many different plants but there were many that are grown in Texas too such as the fountain grass above.

This was the little cabin where we slept the night before.

The staff were amazing. They helped us with our bags and were ready to help us even in the night. We were told not to go out alone at night because there was a possibility of dangerous animals around. That was great advice except that I somehow ended up with someone else's suitcase (I don't wear men's underwear) so I decided that I would have to brave it anyway. Thankfully there was a staff member ready to help me.

Breakfast was pretty good too. We were served eggs, sausage, yogurt, breads, cereal, coffee, a mixed juice, and an African favorite called roobios tea (and no we did not drink the water). It was much like the meals we eat in Texas for breakfast but with a few differences. It is funny how we were in such a different place with so many different things and yet there were so many things that were similar. What an exciting place we found ourselves in.

We would get into our van that day and embark on a great journey that would take us to many beautiful parts and many beautiful people in a very beautiful country. I was looking forward to the adventure ahead of us.

Namibia, Africa

We had finally arrived in Namibia, Africa. It had been a very long trip but we were finally there! It felt almost surreal as we got into a van to drive to our next stop. I was reminded that it was a different country when we had to go to the opposite side of the van to get in and we then drove on the left side of the road. I was surprised by the landscape around me because it looked a lot like Texas, my beautiful home state. It seemed so familiar but so different at the same time...

One of those differences appeared by the side of the road. It was a small herd of Giraffes. They were beautiful.

We stopped by the side of the road to admire them. I loved how graceful they were. I loved how easily they hid in the bush. I loved how shy they seemed to be. I especially loved that I was in Namibia a beautiful country.

I fell in love that day...in love with a country...I would fall in love even more when I met the people...I won't pretend that everything was perfect there, but it was beautiful and it was amazing, and it was a place I hope to visit again.

Quiet Time

I thought I would check in with all of you and let you know that everything is OK. I will be on the road and in the skies soon. I have been preparing for a mission trip to Africa that is coming up very soon. I like to spend lots of quiet time with the Lord before something like this, so that has meant that I haven't had much to talk about in the travel department. I have been missing you all so very much and I hope to have lots of pictures to share with you very soon of a very beautiful country and people.

Here and There, This and That

Have you ever had one of those spans of time when you have done lots but not much to remark upon? That has been pretty much my life lately. I have been busy going here and there and doing this and that. Lots of things and lots of places but not much that is very interesting. I hope to have some interesting things to tell you about very soon though. I have been working on getting my gear together for our mission trip to Ottappe Africa. I have my passport ready and I think I am ready. I am excited though. I guess that is all I have to post for now.

Vietnam Veterans Memorial State Park

While we were in the mountains of New Mexico, my dear hubby and I decided to stop and visit the Vietnam War Veteran's Memorial State Park near Eagles Nest, New Mexico. I had seen the white points of the Memorial many times when we drove past but this day, we decided to visit.

I wasn't really sure what to expect but I began to suspect that it was going to be much better than what I had always imagined it to be when I saw the helicopter plopped down on the edge of a beautiful alpine garden.

The garden was like stepping into respite and peace as we walked under the beautiful aspen trees.

There was a beautiful chapel where one could remember, and pray, and even light a candle for those lost. It was a very peaceful place.

The buildings where all built in the same style almost like white mountain peeks reaching into the beautiful blue sky.

Along the path there were memorial bricks naming those who lost their lives serving our country in the Vietnam War.

Inside there was an excellent museum that sought to give a snapshot of the impact this war had on so many lives. The memorial was built by a grieving father who had lost his son in the war.

I grew up in the era that first published the war on television. Since that time many of us have become hardened and immune to the sight of soldiers and/or people being killed in war because of graphic movies, games, and documentaries.

There are real people out there who fought this war whose lives were changed forever in the effort to preserve our freedom. There are many who fight for that freedom right now in countries that are far away. We are so blessed to not have those wars fought on our own soil because they are willing to answer the call and go to those far away countries on our behalf.

There were pictures and records of all those lost in Vietnam on display in the memorial. It reminded me about the families who were impacted by the loss of loved ones. How many of you out there know someone lost in this war or another war? How many children grew up without their father? How many wives became widows? How many parents lost a child? There is a very high cost to war. I am not going to cheapen their sacrifice by saying it was for nothing. They laid their lives down for another. That is the greatest act of love and I appreciate it so very much.

Although I don't always agree with the political things that get us into war at times, I do agree that our troops deserve the best. They serve us, they fight for us, they give up time with their beloved families for us, they die for us when they must. If you are one of those impacted by this war or any war fought by our troops, or even if you have a loved who has served or is serving; I want to say a heartfelt "Thank You." If you happen to be in the area of Eagles Nest, New Mexico; I do recommend that you take the time and stop by to see this Memorial and Museum.

We Ran For the Hills

It has been so very hot here in Texas. We have had temperatures that have reached 120 degrees and the average has been about 108 degrees (workin' on more than 60 days of it now). The long stretch of triple digit days have really been hard on us Texans. Normally we laugh at the heat, but this year has been a tough one. My dear hubby and I decided we needed to escape for a bit so we made a run for the hills in New Mexico.

It was quite a long drive for us but it was so worth it. We arrived in Red River, New Mexico just in time to experience some rain (we hadn't seen rain in months.) The smell, the sight, the feel of rain was Heavenly. The temperature was about 62 degrees. Ahhhhhhhhhhhh was all we could say.

I can not even describe the joy we felt at the sight of the beautiful fluffy clouds we enjoyed while we were there.

It was almost as if the mountains were saying"Welcome!"

We stayed at the Best Western River's Edge. That was definitely the right place for us. The rooms were great and the best part was that we could walk out our door onto a large deck that had tables and chairs where you could enjoy the beautiful mountain views, as well as the little river that runs through the town.

What a joy to wake up to this every morning. We enjoyed it so very much each morning. We even ate breakfast (which was free) out on the deck. We just couldn't seem to get enough of the sights, sounds, and smells that surrounded us in Red River.

We spent one of those glorious mornings riding the ski lift up to the very top of the mountain.

The views were so beautiful and awe inspiring. The smell of the pine, fir, and spruce trees was so wonderful. I overheard a teenage girl tell her friend it smelled like Febreze in the air (I thought it was much better than that. LOL.)

We had a nice lunch in the little cafe up at the top and enjoyed this site.

This little guy was enjoying the day too. People were sharing their snacks with him. He came over to investigate my toes, thinking they might be a snack too. What fun we had watching his antics.

As we rode the lift back down to the bottom, the sites got even more spectacular. That is Red River down at the bottom.

Sadly, we only got to stay 4 days in Red River. We are usually more than ready to get home after that amount of time but this time was different. We packed our bags, said our goodbyes and headed back to Texas. We hardly spoke as we drove home (we were both lost in our thoughts of how nice a trip it had been; how perfect the sights, smells, shops, food, and everything was.) It was still hot in Texas (really hot!) We hope to return to Red River again soon. We also hope it rains and cools things off here in Texas soon!

It has been so very hot this summer! I haven't been very many places this summer because of the heat. I have been staying home and trying to water my garden and lawn as well as trying to keep my critters cool (my chickens drop like flies in this extreme heat). I am planning a trip in late October though. Can you guess where I might be going? If you guessed Africa then you are right! I am headed to Outtape, Namibia in Africa for a mission trip. It will be during their summer. It has been so very hot here with temperatures of 117 and even higher that I am thinking it may actually be cooler in Africa. I am also headed to the mountains in New Mexico this weekend for a very short vacation. Oh how I look forward to those cooler temperatures. If you are one of those who are getting more than your fair share of rain this summer, please...we could really really use it here in Texas and Oklahoma. Wouldn't it be wonderful if we could just send it where it is needed at will? I have always been a dreamer that way. If you are wondering where I came up with the above photo then check out Polyvore.

Hyatt Regency Hill Country Resort in San Antonio

I recently got the pleasure of staying at the Hyatt Regency Hill Country Resort in San Antonio. Located on what used to be the Roger's - Wiseman Ranch, this luxurious yet casual Resort Hotel was a place that will remain in my memory as a wonderful experience.

My dear hubby and I enjoyed strolling around the hotel and the grounds during our stay there. The hotel is situated right on a championship golf course along with a 4 acre water park. I wish the weather had been warmer because the lazy river that wound around their grounds was quite tempting.

We spent a nice afternoon strolling along the walking path that wound around the golf course, the water park, and the hotel. We also took a little stroll along the nature trail. There were many little critters to watch and enjoy along the way.

One of my favorite things to do was to sit out on the front entrance of the hotel in rocking chairs. Or to rest in the many chairs, or benches all over the grounds or even take a little nap in the hammock. Each offered such beautiful views and were so relaxing. The staff were all beyond friendly and so helpful. I especially enjoyed our maid who was so sweet and helpful.

The hotel will definitely remain in my memory as one of my favorites. I hope to go back one day to see how beautiful it must be when the grass is green, the flowers blooming and the weather is warm enough for a cooling dip in their beautiful pools or lazy river. I especially want to get into that lazy river.

I would return to the Springhouse Cafe for more of their fine dining, friendly service, and beautiful relaxing atmosphere. I would also do more shopping at the local shopping spots that I found in every direction I chose to go. I was up to my ears in Ross and Target stores which is always a plus in my book. There were also really nice malls close by. I am hoping that next time I get to San Antonio that I will find SeaWorld open. It was one of my favorite places as a child in San Diego and I have always heard that the San Antonio version is excellent. Sigh...maybe next time.

If you plan to be in San Antonio then, I would definitely recommend staying at the Hyatt Regency Hill Country Resort.

Texas Style Light

I thought I would share with you about Texas style light

Candlelight that is...

When we were travelling about one day...

We made a stop at the Circle E Candle Factory in Fredricksburg, Texas.

It was one of those places I have always wanted to see but never seemed to make time for. I am so glad we finally stopped because it will definitely be a regular stop for me when I come back to town.

I have enjoyed their very fine candles for years. I find them at several of my favorite shops.

However, it was quite enjoyable to finally see where they originate from. As soon as we stepped from the car we could smell the most Heavenly of scents.

The store was very beautiful and I kept hoping I would leave the store smelling like the air in the store. We didn't get to see the process of making the candles but the storekeeper was quite helpful in explaining to us about how Circle E Candles are made.

The plant has about 17 ladies who pour the candles by hand. 3 of those ladies pour the most popular scent every single day. Can you guess which scent that is? It is the very scent I ended up buying...and it is wonderful!

Each of the other ladies have 5 scents each and they pour a different scent each day from one of those 5.

There is a person who takes care of the recipes before the candles are poured. His job is almost like being a wine master only for candles. I wonder if they call him the candle master?

There are approximately 23 others who take care of all the other jobs within the plant.

We were quite impressed to hear this information because we see Circle E Candles everywhere!

They are quite popular because the candles are of such high quality.

Mine have always burned perfectly and the scent has always remained until the very last drop is burned.

I picked the one in this container...I was torn between two scents but finally settled on this one since Spring time is almost here. It was a difficult choice because I did not smell a bad scent in the whole store (and I have smelled every single one).

I Think I Will Travel To...Paris!

Have you been stuck at home lately? Sometimes that happens due to lack of finance, time, or even because of bad weather. I have found a way to enjoy other places even when that happens. I decided to use this method to see Paris.

I decided that I would not let the lack of funds, or time, or being iced in stop me. I traveled by arm chair on the Internet. It wasn't quite like going in person but it has been very fun. This kind of trip is greatly enhanced when I burn scented candles and cook recipes that remind me of the destination. One can even plan and/or dress as they would on a trip of this type. Maybe even learn some of the language. It can be as fun as you want to make it. Maybe even invite your friends to join you and celebrate the end of the trip with a party.

Paris Clock

It all started for me when I was inspired while reading a blog that I enjoy quite a bit. This post led me to another blog which then led me to another...and well you can probably see where this is going. I wrote about the blog that started my armchair travel to this romantic destination here.

I visited great works of art, I saw great architecture, I shopped in wonderful shops, I saw the latest fashions, I found the most delicious food, and new recipes that I want to try. I met new people and I enjoyed myself so much that I think I will do it again. I had so much fun that I shared some of those experiences with my girlfriends and we have been inspired to start saving our pennies so that we can take a girlie trip to Paris in person. Oh how fun it will be. By that time we should know exactly where we want to stay, and every place we want to experience in person. We may even have friends to visit.

When You Are Stuck At Home

We have snow and ice on the ground here so I have been stuck at home. That is OK though because it is nice sometimes to get a little respite. It has given me time to get caught up on laundry, and get some things put away, and several other little chores that were undone. I have had time to get my stack of magazines read and I finally got around to reading Blogging Bliss by Tara Frey from Typing Out Loud. I finished a website that I have been working on and I updated another...

Although I would not want to be snowed in all the time, I must say that it is really nice. I kind of enjoy staying in my pj's with a fire in the fireplace and a kitty at my feet. I think we should all get a chance to do it sometimes. It gives us a chance to catch up but it also gives us a chance to step back and take a look at some of the busyness in our lives and maybe do a bit of editing. I know there are things that I see in my life that can be edited out. Things that can make time for more important things like my family and friends.

There Is More in Colorado City, Texas Than The Headlines Say!

It has been quite a busy time already this year. I have been dashing here and there taking care of family business and friends. That is part of who I am. When someone needs me I just drop what I am doing and dash off to help them if I can. One of these little trips took me to Colorado City, Texas. Many of you may have seen this little Texas town in the news lately, especially if you watch Nancy Grace. Sadly, there is a young teen girl, Hailie Dunn, that has gone missing. I did intercede for her and her family while I was there. It is such a sad and scary time for that family and that small town. I want to point out though that although the news media has done a fair amount of bashing that little town and their police force, I want you to know that it isn't quite the backwoods kind of place that the media has portrayed it to be. Colorado City is not the most gorgeous place I have ever been, but, it does have it's charm. A good friend of mine said of Colorado City, "If the people get any friendlier then I will have to move in with them." That is so true. They are friendly loving people. The story you are not seeing in the news is how that little town has pulled together to help find that little girl. They are dedicating countless man hours searching, printing fliers, putting out ribbons and bears in her honor and many other things. They are cooking and preparing and serving meals to the many law enforcement officers there. As for the reports of unethical behavior by officers in that community, you need to understand this is a very small town. People know their neighbors and the people across the town too. It is the kind of place where everyone knows everyone. It really is like living in a place that is a cross of Andy Griffith and In The Heat of The Night. There are a few bad things that happen but over all the little town is not a dangerous place to live. People watch out for each other and help each other!

Aside from the case that has grabbed headlines I want you to know what a great place Colorado City, Texas is. It is a town full of turn of the century homes. It is a town where you can buy a huge and very nice home for prices that would make your mouth water. It has a really nice school system where kids are not lost in the system. The kind of school that lives Friday Night Lights. (It is such a Texas thing, I know.) One of my favorite things about Colorado City is that one of my best friends lives there. One of my other favorite things about Colorado City is the shopping. Yes, it is a very small Texas town of about 5,000 people. In spite of it's size, Colorado City is my absolute favorite place in the world to go antique shopping. It is a very well kept secret just how great a place it is to go antiquing. It is so great that I even hesitate to tell you about it because I don't want it to change it's greatness. You see, I can go buy really nice antiques and vintage items for a song! I am not kidding. They are so reasonable on their prices that I find it really hard to buy antiques elsewhere. Every where I go, I find myself wondering how much less I would pay if I found it in Colorado City. Most of the time I end up waiting to find out. Just this last week I found this lovely old picture. I don't usually buy old pictures of people I do not know but something about this one just spoke to me. It reminded me of times I had sat with my own family or friends under a large shade tree and laughed and talked. It reminded me of Colorado City, a place that is good for family and friends. A place that will always be special in my heart.

Lake Heffner

I have been travelling to Oklahoma City all my life and this weekend I found a beautiful place in Oklahoma City that was unknown to me. This gorgeous jewel of Oklahoma City was Lake Heffner

When I found this beautiful place I was surprised and intrigued. I decided to make a point of stopping by and checking it out.

What I found was a gorgeous lake that was maintained with excellence and beauty.

There is a walking/jogging/biking trail that called to me. I didn't have time to enjoy this part of the lake for more than a few moments but I would definitely use it if I lived in Oklahoma City. This part alone would definitely make it worth the drive across the city to spend time exercising in such a gorgeous spot.

I especially loved the little light house feature of the lake.

The lake had so many benefits to offer. There were people walking, jogging, biking, fishing, and even sailing.

When doing some research on the lake I even discovered a sailing club. What a fun place. I would love to have such a lovely place like this to enjoy close to my home.

In addition to all the things I have named already there are several restaurants, a children's playground, a golf course and a Golf club.

Oh how I wish I had more time that day to really explore and walk the path. It was such a gorgeous Autumn day and the sights around me were so alluring.

The views were spectacular and I could imagine how wonderful a bike ride or hike would be in this beautiful place.

I bet it is a great place to visit in all seasons. The birds were plentiful, and all the trees and views were spectacular. This place still beckons to me to come back and spend more time.

You can be sure that when I return to Oklahoma City that I will definitely try to return to this beautiful place.

If you live in Oklahoma City and do not make use of this gorgeous lake then let me encourage you to visit. I think you will be enamored with this beautiful lake just as I was.

Secrets of Miller Creek Reservoir

There is a little jewel in Baylor County, Texas that I would like to share with you called Miller Creek Reservoir.

It isn't the largest lake around.

But I have been told that it is the best lake in Texas for fishing.

The surroundings are absolutely Texas beautiful!

There are mesquite trees in abundance.

There are even a few Texas cattle around.

There are scads of Texas wildflowers in a rainbow of colors.

And who could argue with this beauty?

There are several who love to visit here for all types of water sports and camping and, friendly fun as well as the fishing.

While we were there, we saw so many beautiful things that I could remark on; but somehow I feel the pictures can do most of my speaking this time.

It is a place where beauty abounds!

Look at what we saw! It is a woodpecker.

We spent several minutes watching him crawl up and down the trees looking for a snack.

Everywhere we drove we saw the bones of campfires from friendly gatherings. I wonder if they were here from the neighboring town of Seymour, or Munday, or somewhere far away? I can just imagine the wonderful memories they made here.

Miller Creek is a place that I will definitely visit again!

Cruisin on the Brazos

I have only been to a couple of classic car shows but I am beginning to think that I really do like them. I am not certain what reason exactly. I guess it could be because I grew up helping my daddy in his mechanic shop, or it could be because when I see the classic cars it brings back memories of days and people from long ago. It could even be because I just like vehicles.

This past weekend our little town called Seymour, Texas; that is nestled on the banks of the Brazos River; held a classic car show at our downtown square. This show was called Cruisin the Brazos. I wasn't sure if our little town would attract many cruisers or those who would want to show their cars but I was pleasantly surprised.

We had a fantastic turn out for the show. There were lots of people and lots of vehicles. The weather was perfect too. It was one of those clear beautiful days of fall when the temperature is perfect.

Part of the fun of classic car shows is that you never know what will turn up at these shows. It is always a delight to the senses to see the models, the colors, and the textures of a car show.

It is such a testimony of mankind imitating our Father in Heaven in such a little way that we can conceive of so many different kinds, shapes, colors, & even sounds of vehicles. Don't you just love the sound of a Harley Davidson or a Porsche? I know that I do.

I've always been a girl that likes glitter & glitz and yet still loves the simple things too. Car shows have all those things with the paint jobs, chrome, and even the fabrics that the owners use in their upholstery. I guess it must seem funny that I would love car shows and yet still be a girly girl that loves fashion shows, and decorating too. It is just that I have these memories of looking through the JC Whitney & the JC Penney catalogs. These were just a couple out of many that I enjoyed but they left lasting impressions upon me.

Has that happened to you too? Were there things that you experienced in life that added up to almost conflicting conclusions? It is those quirky little things about us that I find most attractive in people.

Maybe that is another thing that is attractive for me to car shows. The choices that different people make in the vehicle they drive is so varied. Every person has their favorites for different reasons. Some could be nostalgia from childhood memories, or maybe it is low cost, or high cost. Some just want their vehicle to be efficient and others desire the cool factor.

Whatever their reasons for choosing their vehicle, it points to who they are. It gives me a little puzzle piece about them that I find interesting. No I don't judge if their car isn't perfect or if it seems a little weird because I learned long ago that one person's trash is another's treasure.

I am one of those visionary people who can see possibility in almost anything and even in any situation. I guess God made me that way. That is one reason my dear hubby has to house shop without me until he narrows it down to what he can live with, then I go look. If we didn't do it that way there is no telling what kind of money pit I might come up with.

The pictures I have today are only a tiny bit of what I saw that day.

I am one that is affected deeply by color and texture and I just need to say, "Oh the colors & oh the textures!"

Everywhere I looked was a visual treat

Some were vintage and some were newer but all were pleasing

Can you imagine being picked up in one of these for a date?

What a fun time but I would definitely pray for no rain.

Our little town is one of those kind of places that has a downtown area just made for cruising. Wouldn't it be fun to cruise in one of these? Especially when the weather is so perfect.

No racing allowed around our streets though. We have race tracks for that.

Anyone who thinks they might try are quickly reminded that we are a small town where everyone knows everyone. That means they are recognized quickly and can't get away with too much. I like it that way because that helps to make it a safer place to live.

I know I can almost make it seem like Mayberry from Andy Griffith. It isn't quite like that but there are some similarities.

If you have a hankering to see how we do things in a little town in Texas, then maybe you might like coming to our Cruisin the Brazos car show next year about this time.

When You are Out and About

When you are here or there, out and about, running errands or travelling around. . .

When that customer is rude and hangs up on you. . . When that sales clerk won't get off the phone to help you now. . . when that man in line ahead of you keeps on talking. . . When someone doesn't wave or smile back. . . When you see that scowl on a face. . . When you get the waitress who can't seem to get your order right. . . When you get the teller who puts your deposit in the wrong person's account. . . When you get the person on the phone who yells at you. . . When that person at the green light ahead of you won't go . . . Remember. . .

That person may have a loved one at home who is dying, or that person may have found out they have a terminal illness. They may be struggling with the darkness and hopelessness of depression. That person may have overwhelming debts with no help in sight. That drunk homeless person on the street begging may have witnessed his entire family burning in a fire. That crazy man that mumbles to himself may have fought terrible battles in war and seen his buddies die in horrible ways. That lazy employee you keep catching asleep may have a baby at home that cries all night. That person could be facing loneliness that stretches out before them like a dark night. When you are tempted to get angry and judge that person. . .stop! Take a minute and remember that there may be circumstances that you do not know. Say a little prayer and ask The Father to help you see that person how He sees them, because that situation you find yourself in that seems so annoying at the moment can be turned into a moment in time when you can be the answer to that persons prayer.

More Time Travel

I want to suggest another way you can travel through time and distance that is not the norm. I have been working on researching my family history as I shared in a previous post and I have found a really great web site that has helped me so much that I wanted to share it with you. I must warn you that some may be bothered by this so if you have trouble with Cemeteries then turn back now. I even posted a pretty picture so that your delicate senses would not be offended.

I am giving you one last chance to turn back before we head on in and take a look . . .

For those of you who made it this far, I hope you will not think me morbid. I have just discovered that cemeteries offer a wealth of information on family history. The stones you will see in this post are all people I have found in my family history. Many people plan trips to the areas they discover were important to their ancestors and most visit the gravestones of their family members. Because of the economy this year their trips are postponed or cancelled completely. I want to offer an alternative that is free.

I have discovered so many family members this way that I felt it important to show all my readers. I have been able to go visit many many members of our family this way. . .

I have been able to go visit all these places which are stretched all across the world through an amazing website called Find a Grave. This website is a project that I have benefited from so much that I even joined and began to contribute pictures and records from the cemeteries close to me.

The way it works is so simple and it is a great way to honor and remember those who have passed on.

Each record that is contributed on a burial becomes a web page in honor of that person. It gives room for pictures of the headstone, cemetery, and even of the person or family.

There is space to include a biography of the person and even a place to leave virtual flowers and notes. It is a virtual cemetery and it is completely free. The information there is uploaded by those who donate their time and pictures from all over the world.

Again, I hope this has not been too morbid for you. I just felt that many would not know of this amazing resource and that some might even want to become contributors as well. Curb Appeal in Fredricksburg, Texas

I love to drive the streets of Fredricksburg, Texas. It is one of the most beautiful cities that I have ever visited. I think they must have invented the words curb appeal. Check out these pictures and you will see what I mean. . .

I have noticed that the large homes as well as the tiniest of cottages are beautiful.

They have truly learned how to put their best foot forward in this tiny city.

I know you might be thinking that it is because of all of the Victorian era homes but there are homes of every style in Fredricksburg.

I think they have learned the value of details. . .

They have learned the art of display with flowers, plants, decorative items and furniture on their porches. . .

I can see they consider their paint colors carefully . . .

And the trims they use on their homes are just amazing. . .

I have noticed all different kinds of fences around their homes. . .

They can make even the simplest of wire fences look charming.

I think other cities could learn many lessons from the people in Fredricksburg, Texas

Lessons about how to use what you have and make the most of it.

Lessons like how to love the home you have no matter what style or size it is.

Lessons that say you don't have to be wealthy to make your home beautiful.

It is so easy to look at others and list out the things they have but I have discovered a little secret. . .

I have learned that we are all blessed with the very things we need to move on to better things. We all have choices that will lead us to blessing if we will learn to recognize them.

We can choose to see our lives as we look at some homes; as a shack or maybe we should look again because it has the ability to be a cottage.

So many times we are so focused on what we do not have that we do not see what we do have.

I can always see what isn't but if I will look at what is then that is something that can be dealt with or fixed.

I can take the things I have and make them the best they can be. Maybe it might take some time and even some hard work but when we are faithful with a little then God can bless us with more.

It also requires not despising the small things. For the longest of times I didn't quite understand what that meant but as I have journeyed through life I have learned that sometimes our desires come to us in seed form.

Sometimes God gives us the seed rather than the fruit we desire so that we can learn to plant that seed, care for that seed, and trust it to Him for the fruit.

I dreamed of a large beautiful home for many years. My first home to own was a trailer house. It was a really old trailer house. It wasn't very beautiful at all. For a bit I lamented about what I wanted but eventually I decided to bloom where I was planted.

We didn't have lots of money so it took a little time and it took some work on my part. I wasn't happy with the outside of that trailer house so I painted it. How many people do you know who would even try it? Well I did it and it looked so much better.

Next, I planted flowers. I found out that many gardeners are always willing to share and so I began my friendship garden. Some of those same plants go with me where ever I move. When I look at them I think of the one who shared them with me. I will always be willing to share with others as well.

I worked on the inside too. Paint can cover a multitude of ugliness. It is one of the cheapest ways to make just about anything better. The same goes with flowers.

I have also learned to barter. I have abilities that I can trade for abilities of others. I have done it for years with friends and others. They help me with what I need & I help them with what they need. It really is fun especially if you do it together and you get so much done. I have learned so many more skills doing this as well. Skills that I could then use to barter.

I have also learned that you can learn how to do just about anything if you are willing.

And that the older generations have so much wisdom and knowledge to learn from. Why learn the hard way? Why not make friends with the older generations and benefit from their wisdom. That is how I learned many inexpensive ways to do many things in life. I also found out that the older generations are lots of fun. Some of my very best friends have been much older than me but age doesn't really matter in the end.

So can you see now that it doesn't matter how ugly you may think your home is?

Can you see that the answer is not a new home but to look at your own differently?

It is to see the positives, and fix the negatives or at least paint them over.

It doesn't have to be overnight, just take one step at a time and before long you will have beauty around you.

And when you hear others lamenting that they wish they had such a nice home then you can smile that smile that says you know a secret.

because you will know that it isn't about what you do not have

but instead, it is about . . .

what do you do with what you do have.

Somewhere in Texas

I went to see a much beloved place in Texas for me. My dear hubby and I went to visit the hill country. We found a feast for our eyes. We drove one of the many bluebonnet trails around Fredricksburg and found an absolutely delightful place.

We cruised out of Fredricksburg, Texas on highway 16 which leads to Llano, Texas.

We drove out to the Willow City Loop which is a narrow farm to market road that loops around and takes you through some very beautiful ranch land in Texas.

The wildflowers were in full bloom and it was beautiful.

The colors were so bright it that it amazed me.

It was so gorgeous to gaze over the valleys and see streams of blue flowers.

What a blessing to live somewhere so beautiful.

Every turn and dip and hill brought us to another gorgeous view

I couldn't stop taking pictures

I wanted to remember every sight.

Even the grass and the trees put on a lime green show for us.

The scent of the bluebonnets in the air was wonderful.

I found sparkling delights everywhere I turned.

I kept wondering how God must have delighted as He created this part of the world.

And I knew how the first settlers must have fallen in love with the land when they saw nature's beautiful display in this place.

Especially if they saw it in its springtime bloom.

I began to feel a connection to Lady Bird Johnson who had so much passion for the Texas wildflowers and did so much to ensure they were planted along Texas highways.

I am so thankful for her work in this.

We came around a bend and there before us was a whole slew full of dune buggies. I laughed as I quickly snapped a picture of the sight.

I know the locals must have many irritations because of the flower seekers and I am so thankful that we are allowed to visit their part of the world for just a bit.

I hope you enjoy seeing just a few of the pictures I took.

It was so difficult trying to decide which ones to post.

because every picture was so beautiful.

Just like every view was beautiful in this part of Texas.

I was travelling home one evening and just had to stop and take some pictures of what is blooming along our Texas roadways near Seymour. . .

Those purple and white flowers are not bluebonnets. They are buffalo peas.

They only bloom when the conditions are just right and guess what?

This year was right!

Cattle love to eat Buffalo peas and they are very very good for the cattle according to a local Texas rancher.

They tend to grow in the least fertile places.

With such beautiful sights like this it is very hard not to smile.

I just love when the wildflowers bloom in Texas.

Tips on Travelling Through History with Ancestry.Com

During my recovery, I was not able to travel in the usual ways so I got creative. I have spent the time travelling through history. It all started when I began scanning family pictures in to digital images. I had my mother's and my grandmother's pictures along with my own. I began asking my parents about some of the people in these images. I found out that this picture below is my Great Grandmother on her wedding day. Before I knew it I was on Ancestry.com working on a family tree.

This website is amazing if you are interested in documenting your family and finding more about your family. It has been so helpful in so many ways that I just cannot say enough about it. It has been helpful in connecting me to other long lost family members as well as finding documents and photos of family. I had no idea of the journey I would take right from my own comfy chair.

I have even been able to trace some of my Native American roots and history. I discovered surprising and amazing things as well as sad and even upsetting things. I was able to get a little glimpse into the lives of those who came before me.

Let me give you a few tips if you decide to set off on this journey. I definitely recommend that you start with your pictures. Scanning them into digital is just a wise thing to do in order to preserve them and so that they are much easier as well as more economical to share. As I scanned I discovered that some pictures were able to be fixed and enhanced to make them better than the original and there were some that did not scan in perfectly. I found that Picasa by Google was invaluable for helping me repair and enhance my pictures. I get lots of compliments on my photos and I have to give some of the credit to Picasa. It is my favorite free picture software. I had intended to buy one of the fancy ones but then I found this one and decided that it offered just about everything I needed at the moment. If you decide to try it and have any problems feel free to email me. I have found a few tricks that work wonders.

My next step was to ask questions of all my family members. I have visited them, spoke on the phone with them and I even uploaded family pics to Facebook so they could look at them with me as we were on the phone and online together. The little bits and pieces that I learned have been valuable in my research. It has amazed me how many times one little bit of information has opened a huge door in our family tree. As you do your research look at documents as well. Some of the best sources of information for me has been : birth/death certificates, marriage/divorce certificates, the backs of photos, old letters, burial notices, school annuals, school documents, military records, newspaper clippings, and gravestones which can be looked up here. All those historical bits of paper can really offer great information so be sure to check them out. One whole branch of my family tree opened up because of one little mysterious note on the back of a picture.

My next step was to register on Ancestry.com. It is free to use and very user friendly. It is so helpful in documenting your tree. I recommend that you upgrade to the paid service. They even offer 14 days free trial that can be easily cancelled any time you decide. The upgraded version offers clues and hints through other family trees as well as old census records and many other record databases. When I came to dead ends I also found information when I would Google the name of the person I was researching. If you are really adventurous you can even go visit some of the places you learn about in your research. Then you can check out the courthouse records, local libraries, cemeteries, and any historical places of note. Bright Spots

I have been on a much longer journey than I ever imagined. There were some really hair raising curves and it seemed to take so long to get back home. I am home now. As most of you know, I had to take a break from blogging because of an unplanned surgery. I tell more about that surgery on my Beauty Cottage Blog It took much longer for me to come back from my break than I ever imagined. I really did think I would bounce right back easily. I guess I didn't take into account all that was involved. I must say that I have been in some really dark places. It is when we are down that the enemy loves to come in and kick us in the teeth. He didn't deviate from that this time either. That is OK though because I found a bright spot . . .

I discovered how very much my family and friends love me. They came to the line and they fought for me. They encouraged me and they ministered to me, they prayed for me. I don't think I could have made it without them and I want to thank all of you who lifted me in prayer and I thank you for your kind comments.

The pictures I am sharing here are of a beautiful church located in Rhineland, Texas. Rhineland is a very tiny but charming little German hamlet located near Seymour, Texas. In this tiny little place of around 100 people is this large and beautiful church. It is a Catholic Church. No, I am not Catholic but I acknowledge my Catholic brothers and sisters in the body. The rest of the body could not be if it had not been for the forefathers of the Catholic Church and so I honor them. As I have come out of my dark night of the soul; I kept remembering my trip to see this church. I remembered this little village that was so tiny that it was shocking to see such a large beautifully well built church in this place. Seeing this and having grown up in really small towns I know what a witness it is of the people in Rhineland, Texas. Because of that I wanted to point them out to you.

I hope that if you are ever anywhere near this place that you will stop by and see this little place. I honor those forefathers. It must have taken great sacrifice of finances and time for this community to build such a church building. They went out of their way to show the world a bright spot.
