A Day in the Life of Lindsey

When I first started to map out Lindsey's print, I realized there were 7 pages. No matter what I did, the canvas would be oddly shaped. It turned out to be such a blessing in disguise. I started to think about how much of my work is about the moment in time when I viewer stands in front of it. At that moment the artwork is complete. Since my viewer completes my work conceptually, I thought I'd give them the opportunity to complete it visually (in his/her own mind) as well.

I absolutely love the expression that she is giving in this image!

I love the way this turned out. Lindsey's favorite colors are rainbow moonstone and labradorite. I decided to take the blue from the rainbow moonstone and use it for her image and let the white of the paper represent the white of the gem.

The largest canvas I've worked with yet for this project.

I think the final size of this one is going to be 25" x 33." Most of it is going to be white space. That means I've got lots and lots of carving in store for myself this week!

A Day in the Life of Kayla

Kayla was (and maybe still is) teaching English in South Korea when she participated in this project. Here's a photo documentation of the steps I took to complete her piece. I love the detail in the blanket Kayla was using when her portrait was taken. It adds such substance to the composition.

A Day in the Life of Cindy

I would like to introduce you to Cindy. She currently resides in Paris, France. This is the first artwork of this series to be completely covered in ink. When I saw that Cindy was using her bookcase as her backdrop for her self portrait, I knew I had to incorporate that into the final artwork.

Now, I haven't sewn the pages together yet, but I am just too excited and want to share it this very second. So, imagine it is sewn together!

I am so happy to have the time to commit to making more work for this project! Over the weekend I finished up the work using the notes and image for Jen of Fort Collins, Co. This time around, I decided to concentrate a bit more on some of the detailing. I was really intrigued by the cowboy hat that Jen was wearing in the photograph and it sort of become my focal point. It was a welcome carving challenge!

Shilenne and I share the same favorite color. I was excited to use the color purple for a print because I haven't used it in a very long time.

I have enough completed works to start applying to some group art shows. I will keep you updated on that process. I have been getting a great deal of positive feedback so far and would love to hear what others think about the individual works of art and the concept.

A Day in the Life of Yolanda

Like Sue, Yolanda's favorite color is blue. I had the pleasure of reading about a day in the life of a woman living in Paris, France.

I can't really express what this project means to me at the moment. It is so fascinating getting to know someone through a portrait, hand writing and a diary of his/her day. I am starting to track the statistics behind each participant's day and hope to have some sort of graph when I have a few more pieces complete.

I most excited right now about the possibility of starting to show some of the work in group exhibitions. I have another work that has one more layer of color to go and then I will start to submit the work. I really want this work to get out there because I feel like it has the possibility of speaking to a great deal of people. It is more vulnerable, personal, intimate and honest than my past work and I think that will pay off in the end.

I would love to know what you think!

Sue from Alaska: Part One

I had forgotten the smell of printmaking ink and the feeling of running ink up and down a linocut. I am so happy to be printmaking again. Words can't explain how annoying it has been being away from creating a series of work. I wanted to share my first print for this project. It comes from Sue who currently resides in Alaska. I have only completed the first layer so you will have to stay tuned to see the completed work.

I have decided to use the pages of notes that each participant mailed to me as my paper. That adds a touch of uniqueness to each piece.

On to the documentation of the process.

First, I drew Sue's face onto a linoleum block.

Then I carved away the first layer and printed her face on to the pages she sent me of a day in her life. Her favorite color is blue. There will be 3 shades of blue when the artwork is complete. And, the final step will be to sew the pages together to create one piece of paper.

I can't wait to see the final results! I will be sure and share them with you.

I have been getting mail almost every day and I LOVE IT! I am collecting records of people's lives from all around the globe and cannot wait to turn the stack that is starting to pile in my office into an artwork! And, then, an art exhibition!

Good morning (my time) to you all! I am so happy that today is the official launch of A Day in the Life.

My amazing volunteers are writing down the details this very minute and will continue to do so for today and just today. They are connecting with strangers from around this world, just like we all do every single day!

I myself am tracking my day to day details and am having an interesting experience as I do so.

There is a lot of work ahead for me in order to get this idea of mine turned into an art installation so everyone can see the idea for themselves. I am excited, optimistic, overwhelmed and so happy to have a new project launched. Art make me tingle.

Ok everyone, I have decided on a day for you all to write down the details of your life for me.

That day is, (drum roll....) May 18th, 2011.

Mark your calendars so you don't forget. The whole idea is to have everyone creating a record of the same day, so it has to be the 18th of May for everyone.

So, here's what you need to do. Find yourself a few blank white pieces of paper. The size does not matter. What does matter is that it is BLANK. No lines please. And, no color other than white.

Please write in your native language. And, if your native language is not English, please include an English translation when you submit your record.

What do I want you to write down?
I want you to record your life on May 18, 2011 via hand writing ALL of your activities (even if they seem insignificant) from when you wake up until you fall asleep.

I will also need the following from you:
1. A photo of you taken on May 18, 2011(CLICK HERE for more specifics)
2. Your favorite color
3. A signed Model Release (CLICK HERE for the model release)
Please print, read, and sign the model release and mail that to me along with your notes from May 18th. (I provided an address in an email to you).

If you have any questions, please let me know!

I have a great many things to do before this project is complete and am really excited to see how it shapes itself into an exhibition. So far, I have collected a YES! from 21 volunteers from 5 of the 7 continents. I am not confident that I will ever find a volunteer in Antarctica, but will hold on hope! I would like to get a volunteer from Japan, China, or somewhere else in Eastern Asia as I do not have a volunteer from that area yet.

But, hey, it's a start!

I am hoping to have enough volunteers in the next 6 weeks or so in order to choose a DAY and get this project rolling.
