Motorola reveals disappointing Android 4.0 roadmap

Motorola's mobile arm, which has recently been given regulatory approval in the US to be acquired by advertising giant Google, has released a timetable of when its devices will be getting an upgrade to Android 4.0 'Ice Cream Sandwich' - and some customers will be waiting a while.

Although the company has already rolled out an upgrade to the latest version of Google's Android platform for its Xoom Wi-Fi tablet in the US, the company's latest roadmap suggests that Europe won't be receiving the same software until some time in the spring.

The same Q2 timescale is given for the company's Razr smartphone, while those with other devices will be waiting even longer. The Atrix 2 smartphone, Xoom 2 and Xyboard tablets have had their updates pushed back to Q3 - some time towards the end of summer.

For customers in the US, the story is even worse: updates for the Droid 4, Droid Bionic, Droid Razr, Droid Razr MAxx, Droid Xyboard 8.2 and 10.1, and the Electrify are currently in the "evaluation and planning stage," with more details expected. As a result, there's no firm guarantee that these devices will ever seen an upgrade to the latest build of Android.

Finally, those who splashed out for the Xoom tablet with integrated 3G in both the US and Europe find themselves in the same limbo as the smartphone users above: no firm date for an upgrade, and if the 'evaluation' process goes badly no promise of an update at all.

Previously, Motorola has blamed Google for its slow rollout of Android 4.0 updates, claiming that the company forced its customers to wait until the commercial release of its own Galaxy Nexus handset before releasing the source code to 'Ice Cream Sandwich.' The reasons for these latest delays, however, are unclear.

Although things are likely to improve when Motorola Mobility is officially acquired by Android maker Google, for now it's a waiting game for the company's customers eager to get their hands on the latest update for their smartphones and tablets.

Google Chrome for Android

If you’re running the Ice Cream Sandwich operating system, a.k.a. Android 4.0, on your smartphone or tablet, you can run along right now and download Chrome for Android.

The latest addition to the Chrome family is a mobile beta that brings a (purportedly) better and faster browsing experience to Android devices. Perhaps most exciting of all, it allows for the desktop-to-mobile syncing and sign-ins we have loved so much in competitor Firefox for Android.

“Like the desktop version, Chrome for Android Beta is focused on speed and simplicity, but it also features seamless sign-in and sync so you can take your personalized web browsing experience with you wherever you go, across devices,” wrote Chrome-focused Googler Sundar Pichai on the company blog.

Similarly, Firefox for Android (which started out as a mobile project codenamed Fennec) brings the famous Firefox Sync (which synchronizes tabs, settings, and personal data from Firefox on any other platform), a streamlined interface, and blazing speed.

Far be it from Google to let Mozilla have the upper hand in Android mobile browsers, though. It’ll be interesting to see how the two browsers compare — at least on Android 4.0 devices. We’ll have to wait and see whether Google ever rolls out a Chrome for Android beta for 2.X and 3.X devices.

Gameloft Live enters the social mobile fray on Android

Global games publisher Gameloft announced today its new gaming hub service, Gameloft Live. In a move that should surprise no one, the company has taken the concept and the name of a console gaming service (Xbox Live) and repurposed it for the mobile space with a dedicated Android app, available now, and a soon-to-be-released iOS app.
According to the press release, Gameloft Live is a new version of the multiplayer service already in many Gameloft-published games and used by over seven million players. The new dedicated mobile app will allow users to create a 3D avatar and virtually connect with friends who also use the service to play games, chat, and see their accomplishments across the Gameloft gaming scene. The new hub will also incentivize players with gifts and avatar accessories, again similar to the console service.
It’s interesting to note that Gameloft is not the first games publisher to this space, as Ngmoco/DeNA launched Mobage this past summer, GREE acquired OpenFeint this past April, and Tapjoy connected with PapayaMobile to provide a similar social mobile service last November. Gameloft Live is entering an already crowded social mobile gaming space, hoping it has the winning combination of games, rewards, and user loyalty to come out on top.
Why are all these companies creating their own mobile social networks? In a sea of apps on both platforms (iOS has over 500,000 apps, the majority of them games), discovering games has become a serious issue. The App Store, Android Marketplace, and Amazon Appstore are the only viable markets for apps, but these are like small doors opening on a huge number of competing and sometimes look-alike apps, confusing savvy and newbie consumers alike. A mobile social network with its requisite avatars, social connections, and virtual rewards make it more likely that consumers will discover apps within that social network more often. Hence the current trend.
Gameloft is based in France and publishes and develops both original and franchised games on all major gaming platforms, including consoles and mobile devices. It is listed on the Paris Stock Exchange (ISIN: FR0000079600, Bloomberg: GFT FP, Reuters: GLFT.PA).

Google could launch Android 5.0 as soon as Q2

Sensing slow momentum with Ice Cream Sandwich and a growing push for Microsoft’s Windows 8, Google might launch Android 5.0, a.k.a. Jelly Bean, in the second quarter of 2012, according to Taiwanese publication DigiTimes.
Based on its previous launches, it would make sense for Google to introduce Jelly Bean in the second quarter, but not necessarily launch it. Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich was introduced in the second quarter of 2011 at Google’s I/O conference, but it did not get completely official til its legit debut in October. Google’s I/O conference this year is scheduled for late June 27, so it could easily debut Jelly Bean there.
Android 5.0 will reportedly add even more emphasis on tablet features, and it could offer dual-boot functionality between Android and Google’s Chrome OS. Google is coaxing vendors into offering dual-boot abilities between Android and Windows 8. The company might also attempt to bring Android 5.0 to the notebooks and netbooks.
Jelly Bean could face serious adoption challenges, however, based on what we’ve seen with Ice Cream Sandwich adoption. Motorola, for example, has already indicated that it will be taking its time to update many devices to Ice Cream Sandwich. Most of Motorola’s phones and tablets won’t see Ice Cream Sandwich until the third quarter, at least.
Windows 8 is likely to launch late in the third quarter of the year. Microsoft’s new OS will attempt to bridge the gap between desktop and mobile with the ability to support touch screens and switch between traditional apps and touch-friendly Metro apps.

Kindle Fire with 8-inch iPad

Apple is in the process of testing a smaller version of its iPad tablet, a product that could help it steal away market share from smaller tablets like the Kindle Fire and Samsung Galaxy Tab, according to a report by the
Wall Street Journal.
While the iPad is still by far the number one selling tablet in the world, Amazon’s 7-inch Kindle Fire has had a relatively strong debut — though Amazon refuses to tell anyone exactly how many units it has sold. And then there are other smaller tablets in the market like the Samsung Galaxy Tab, Barnes & Noble’s Nook Tablet and Motorola’s Xyboard tablets. Arguably, Apple has a good opportunity to create a smaller tablet to compete against these other devices.
Apple’s latest 10-inch iPad tablet, the iPad 3, will almost certainly be announced the first week of March and see release in the middle of that month. The iPad 3 is rumored to have a 2048-by-1536-pixel Retina display, a quad-core A6 processor, and 4G LTE networking. But we may not see a small-screened iPad debuting alongside the iPad 3 since Apple is still in the early stages of the development process. However, there has been previous speculation from Taiwanese publication Digitimes about a smaller iPad form factor would start production in mid-2012 and see release late in the year.
The Wall Street Journal report suggests that Apple has shown a new smaller tablet to suppliers that has a screen around 8 inches in size. The company is also reportedly working with Taiwan’s AU Optronics Co. and South Korea’s LG to create the test panels.
Ideally, the smaller form factor and a lower price could attract those who have small hands and feel the $500 base price for the iPad is too much. There are some consumers that simply prefer the 7- or 8-inch form factor simply because its lighter and better for reading during extended periods.

Wednesday, March 7 is the date covetous Apple fans can finally catch their first real glimpse at the much-ballyhooed iPad 3, according to a new report.
Citing reliable sources, iMore editor-in-chief Rene Ritchie declared that we can expect Apple to unveil its newest tablet on the first Wednesday in March. The day aligns with past Apple media events and matches the early March timing AllThingsD reported last week.
“Along with the 2048×1536 Retina display, the iPad 3 will feature a quad-core Apple 6 system-on-a-chip, and possibly 4G LTE networking,” Ritchie said.
We’ve suspected for some time that the iPad 3, should it be called that, will feature a faster processor, faster graphics, and a retina display.
Perhaps more interesting is that Apple will once again (coincidentally?) reveal its latest touch-based machination just days ahead of South-By-Southwest Interactive, the annual Austin gathering of industry insiders and wannabes.
Last year, the beloved device maker lifted the veil on the iPad 2 a week prior to the geeky affair and started selling the device during the show. News and online buzz surrounding the remake of Apple’s category-defining device easily eclipsed that of the conference and out-shined launching startups, keynote addresses, lavish parties, and so forth. One year later, Apple could easily do the same — should it choose to release the iPad 3 during SXSW Interactive again. The launch date, however, is still unknown.
But now that the big reveal is less than one month away,gossip about what features the device will include will intensify and maybe, if we’re really lucky, we’ll get a few early leakseclared that we can expect Apple to unveil its newest tablet on the first Wednesday in March. Working conditions

The conversation started with the accusations that Apple has kept poor working conditions for its assembly line workers.
“No one in our industry is doing more to improve working conditions than Apple,” said Cook at the conference, repeating a claim he’s made several times recently.
Recently, dozens of workers at manufacturing company Foxconn threatened a mass suicide based on payments they believed they were owed. Although the workers were building Xbox 360s, Foxconn also builds many Apple products, and the threats prompted a renewed look into factory working conditions, including hours worked, and payments received. In reaction, Apple announced Monday that it would look further into Foxconn’s operations and had partnered with the Fair Labor Assocation to audit conditions at the factories.
Cook explained that transparency is becoming a huge issue for Apple, which is now reporting monthly audits of its manufacturing teams to its website for public viewing. These audits will ensure that child labor is not present in Apple’s supply chain, which Cook says is “abhorrent,” and “extremely rare in our supply chain.”
“If we find a supplier that intentionally hires under-aged labor, it’s a firing offense,” he said. “We don’t let anyone cut corners on safety.”
Conditions aren’t 100 percent perfect for Apple, though its goal is to get there. The company has capped its employees’ work weeks at 60 hours, In a recent survey of its 60,000 employees, it found only 84 percent complied with that limit. In other words, 16 percent of its employees are still being overworked. But Cook assured that he and his team are working to get all employees down to that 60-hour mark.
The monthly reports will help keep Apple honest, but these labor issues have been going on for over four years, according to an anonymous source of the New York Times’.

Apple and China

China, where many of Apple’s iPhone and other manufacturing operations take place, is actually driving much of worldwide smartphone sales. According to Cook, 25 percent of the expected $2 billion smartphone market comes directly form China and Brazil. Apple says it is focused on selling its products into the Chinese market and has had particular success there for its iPhone. In previous years, the company took in a few hundred million dollars from iPhone revenue in China, but increased that to $13 billion last year.
But in order to reach more people, you have to make the iPhone more affordable for everyone, right? Cook doesn’t believe so. Much like his predecessor, the late Apple founder Steve Jobs, Cook believes the product is worth the price and people will be unhappy with a device that has been pared down to fit into an economic mold, including going to a budget prepaid approach.
“I don’t really subscribe to the premise that a prepaid market is a prepaid market is a prepaid market,” said Cook, “[Post-paid] is great for the customer because they get the phone at a lower price, and it’s great for the carrier because they get to lock in the customer.”
With the iPhone, Cook explained, China found postpaid plans to be “amazing” and were happy to switch carriers to get the product.
Mac sales in China have risen 100 percent year over year since the iPhone was introduced to the market and it continues to take Apple to other parts of the world. Indeed, Cook believes it has introduced the company’s name to people who had never heard of it before. And the iPad is doing the same.

Global recognition

When the iPod originally came out, it brought the music store to the Mac, and soon after to the Windows PC. After its introduction to the U.S. market, suddenly people started recognizing the Mac more. It created a “halo” around the computer, and helped push its name out to the masses because of the association with this cool, new MP3 player that everyone wanted. Now, Cook says, the same thing is happening with the iPhone and iPad.
“The iPhone is [now] creating a halo for the Mac,” said Cook. The iPhone has done the same for iPad.”
The company has thus far sold 55 million iPads, a milestone that took Apple 22 years to reach with its Mac line. There are over 170,000 apps optimized specifically for the iPad today, which Cook believes is the mark of a good product. He challenged the room to invite the best PC developers to a conference and see how many turned up. He suggested that you might have an empty room, but ask to bring the best iOS developers to a conference, and you might not have enough room in the hotel to hold them all.
“Many of us thought at Apple [when the iPad was being introduced], that the tablet market would become larger than the PC market,” Cook said. “I feel that stronger today than I did then because I look out and see all these incredible uses for it.”
And Apple isn’t going to budge on its tablet pricing either. After being asked about Amazon in particular, Cook explained:

Price is rarely the most important thing. A cheap product may sell some units…[customers] feel great when they pay from their wallets and then they get home and use it and then the joy is gone. And the joy is gone every day they use it. You don’t keep remembering, ‘Oh, I got a good deal!’ Because you hate it!

Tablets cannibalizing the PC industry

A common concern among technology investors is tablet sales taking away from PC sales. While the booming tablet market is indeed cutting into Mac sales, Cook isn’t concerned since Apple is profiting either way.
“I think the iPad has cannibalized some Mac sales … but we’d prefer to do it than have somebody else do it,” said Cook.
Even though PC sales will be hurt, Cook doesn’t think it’s necessarily a bad thing for PC companies.
“I don’t predict the demise of the PC industry,” said Cook. “But when you’re competition with someone, it forces you to sharpen you message and tell who you are. I think it will be good for the PC industry, they’ll innovate.”
Cook restated the usual reasons the iPad is such a hit, including its intuitive interface — even his own mother can use one!

Apple TV: The little hobby that could

Tim Cook really wants you to buy an Apple TV. He made a sales pitch for the Apple product that the company has labeled a “hobby” in the past. There have been rumblings of an “iTV” product in the pipeline. Cook didn’t address the rumors directly, but he did say he was enthusiastic about the general category.
“For those of us that use it, we’ve always thought there was something there,” said Cook. “And that if we kept following our intuition and following that string, we thought we would find something larger.”
“We need something that could go more main market for it to be a serious category.”
Mostly Cook steered away from hinting and instead explained why the company had downplayed its current television offering.
“The reason we call it a hobby is we don’t want to send a message to you or shareholders that the market for it is the size of our other businesses,” said Cook. “Apple doesn’t do hobbies as a general rule. We believe in focus and only working on a few things.”
The company sold 3 million Apple TVs last year.

The Siri and iCloud innovations

Apple’s two most recent new technologies are iPhone-assistant Siri, and cloud-storage product iCloud, both of which Cook repeatedly called “profound.”
Cook said that iCloud, which has 100 million users, represents a fundamental shift in how the company thinks about computing. A decade ago, Apple viewed the PC as the central hub of consumers’ digital lives. The Mac was the “repository” for all your files, music, movies, contacts, and other data.
“iCloud turns that on its head,” said Cook. The company recognized that people live off of multiple devices and syncing was getting in the way of a good customer experience, and it moved the hub to the cloud. The product only launched in October and is still in its infancy.
“There’s obviously more we can do with it,” said Cook. “It’s a strategy for the next decade or more.”
Cook went on to praise Siri for being the first major new tool in a long time for imputing data into a device — except for Apple’s own gestures of course.
“For years if you were a PC or mac user you used a keyboard and mouse for input, and there was evolution in that space but not a lot of revolution.”
Cook said Apple doesn’t do separate product and loss (P&L) reports on the two technologies: “We want to have a great customer experience and we think measuring all [Siri and iCloud] at that level would never achieve these things.”

How Tim Cook’s Apple will be different

Finally, the still new CEO was asked what he was going to change and what he would maintain about Apple’s culture and strategy. Cook skirted the change question and talked about what he would preserve about Apple.
“Steve drilled in all of us over many years that the company should revolve around great products, and that we should stay extremely focused on a few things rather than do so many things that we don’t do any well,” Cook said.
However, the real answer may be Cook’s presence itself. Throughout the Q&A, Cook was affable, funny, and talkative — a departure from Steve Jobs’ sometimes prickly style.

The iPad is too big to ban in China,

Proview Technology, a firm that used to be big in the monitor market, likely won’t get its wish to ban shipments of Apple’s iPad in China.
The company has made news over the last few months with its claims that the name “iPad” infringes on its patents. But Chinese customs authorities have now told the company that they won’t assist in the dispute and that a ban on such a popular product would be difficult to implement, reports Reuters.
“The customs have told us that it will be difficult to implement a ban because many Chinese consumers love Apple products. The sheer size of the market is very big,” Proview CEO Yang Long-san told Reuters. He added, “we have applied to some local customs for the ban and they’ll report to the headquarters in Beijing.”
Proview sought to ban both imports and exports of the iPad in China, the latter of which would have caused major issues for Apple’s iPad supply worldwide, since most of Apple’s devices are built in China.
Yang now says the best resolution for both companies would be an out of court settlement. Apple already lost a case to Proview last year over the iPad trademark. Proview has hearings lined up for later this month for both the settlement talks and trademark dispute. A hefty settlement would be a boon to cash-strapped Proview, which has fallen on hard times after the 2008 financial crisis.
As VentureBeat’s Jolie O’Dell explained previously, representatives of Proview stated that Proview Taiwan, an affiliate of the Shenzhen company that did not have the legal right to represent the company in an IP transaction, sold the iPad trademark to IP Application Development, a UK company. Later, IP Application Development sold the iPad trademark to Apple, apparently unaware that the previous sale had not been authorized by the parent company.

Samsung's Galaxy Note mobile

Samsung's Galaxy Note mobile device was the star of the company's first costly NFL Super Bowl commercial on Sunday, putting a bow on the somewhat controversial "The Next Big Thing is Already Here" media campaign that has been defined by its abject portrayal of Apple customers.

The 90-second Super Bowl XLVI spot, which was set to British glam rock revival band The Darkness' 2003 hit "I Believe in a Thing Called Love," was aired during the fourth quarter as expected, and depicted Apple users happily converting to the new Samsung product.

According to financial blog 24/7 Wall St.'s estimates, the ad cost the South Korean electronic's maker's phone division an estimated $10.5 million in air time alone, and included cameos from The Darkness lead singer Justin Hawkins and Chicago Bears' standout linebacker Brian Urlacher.

The ad begins as usual with customers waiting in line for what is presumably the launch of a new iDevice, who make a few quips about how long they have been waiting, when one of them spots a Galaxy Note user and asks, "what is that?!" From there, things take a turn for the absurd, and soon everyone is using the Galaxy Note to make movies, take pictures and even grab the odd autograph from Urlacher.

Also making an appearance is the "barista" character from previous ads in the campaign, who makes the rather droll remark, "well that was over the top," at the commercial's close.
Samsung's Galaxy Note is a larger-than-a-phone, smaller-than-a-tablet mobile device that sports a 5.3-inch, 1280x800 pixel screen, a 1.5 GHz dual core processor, 16 GB of internal memory, an SD card reader and 4G connectivity.

Setting itself apart from Apple's handset and tablet offerings, the Note utilizes a stylus as its main form input instead of the finger-based scheme made popular by the original iPhone. In today's commercial, the capacitive "pen" is quite heavily referenced and is a throwback to when touch resistive screen technology ruled the PDA market.

First Apple TV prototypes

Apple has contacted at least one major Asian supplier about purchasing television display components, checks by one analyst have revealed.

Piper Jaffray's Gene Munster told investors on Tuesday that he had recently spoken to a "major TV component supplier" about Apple's rumored plans to release a connected HDTV. Sources within the supplier reportedly told him that Apple had contacted "regarding various capabilities of their television display components."

Munster said he viewed the news as "continued evidence that Apple is exploring production of a television." Prior evidence that the analyst claims to have gathered surrounding an Apple television includes January 2011 meetings in Asia that suggested Apple was investing in manufacturing facilities for LCD displays as large as 50 inches and a September 2011 meeting with a "contact close to an Asian supplier" who claimed prototypes of an Apple set are in the works.

The firm believes Apple could be ready to release a television as early as late 2012, though Munster noted that "the timeline and stope of a revamped content solution is more uncertain." Various reports have suggested that Apple has run up against resistance from movie and TV studios that are believed to be hesitant to license their content for an Apple television.

The analyst went on to speculate on several possibilities that Apple could make use of to address the content issue. For instance, Apple could simply enable the television to manage pre-existing live TV service from a unified interface, or it could make use of network programming and web-based video services such as Netflix and Hulu. Finally, Munster suggested that Apple could look to offer monthly subscriptions "on an a-la-carte basis" for live TV packages from content providers, but he noted that this is likely the "most challenging scenario" because of existing licensing arrangements.

A separate report claimed late last year that one of Apple's most-desired features for an Apple television set is customized channel lineups. That report also noted that licensing for such a service would be "obviously much more complicated" than current offerings.

Piper Jaffray projects that Apple could sell 1.4 million of the 106 million internet-connected televisions estimated to be sold this year. The investment bank tentatively estimates that revenues from the device could reach $2.5 billion in 2012, $4.0 billion in 2013 and $6.0 billion in 2014.

Munster concluded his note by pointing out that Apple only enters mature markets in order to reinvent them. As such, he does not see Apple entering the TV market without a "revamped TV content solution."

"Since we know Apple is exploring television hardware, we are therefore led to conclude that the company is exploring a solution for live TV, and this solution could be one that has not yet been taken mainstream," he said.

Rumors of an Apple television set have persisted for years, with many of them originating from Munster himself. The likelihood of such a device arriving appears to have increased in recent months as numerous outlets have put forth evidence that Apple is working on a connected TV. Of course, the project also gained credence from a much-quoted excerpt from Apple co-founder Steve Jobs' biography that revealed he believed he had "cracked" the secret to a simple and elegant TV user interface.

The USB Driver for Windows is available for download as an optional SDKcomponent. You need the driver only if you are developing on Windows and want to connect an Android-powered device (ADP, Nexus One, or Nexus S) to yourdevelopment environment over USB.
To download the driver, use the Android SDK and AVD Manager tool that isincluded with the Android SDK:

Launch the SDK and AVD Manager by double-clicking SDK Manager.exe, at the root of your SDK directory.
Expand the Third party Add-ons and Google Inc. add-ons.
Check Google Usb Driver package and click Install selected.
Proceed to install the package. When done, the driver files aredownloaded into the <sdk>\extras\google\usb_driver\ directory.

Installing the USB Driver

Once you've downloaded your USB driver, follow the instructions below to install or upgrade thedriver, based on your version of Windows and whether you're installing for the first timeor upgrading an existing driver.

Tip: When you finish the USB driver installation,see Developing on a Device forother important information about using an Android-powered device fordevelopment.

Caution:You may make changes to android_winusb.inf file found insideusb_driver\ (for example, to add support for other devices),however, this will lead to security warnings when you install or upgrade thedriver. Making any other changes to the driver files may break the installationprocess.

Windows 7

To install the Android USB driver on Windows 7 for the first time:

Connect your Android-powered device to your computer's USB port.
Right-click on Computer from your desktop or Windows Explorer, and select Manage.
Select Devices in the left pane.
Locate and expand Other device in the right pane.
Right-click the device name (such as Nexus S) and select Update Driver Software. This will launch the Hardware Update Wizard.
Select Browse my computer for driver software and click Next.
Click Browse and locate the USB driver folder. (The Google USBDriver is located in <sdk>\extras\google\usb_driver\.)
Click Next to install the driver.

Or, to upgrade an existing Android USB driver on Windows 7 with the newdriver:

Connect your Android-powered device to your computer's USB port.
Right-click on Computer from your desktop or Windows Explorer, and select Manage.

Android fragmentation

There has been a lot of hand wringing in the developer community about fragmentation on Android. Device makers are delivering dozens of unique units with their own screen size and resolution, and Google hasn’t had any way to ensure that phones running Android stay up to date on the latest release of the operating system.

But a new study from Localytics reports the problem may not be quite as bad as imagined. “Across all apps using Localytics, a full 73% of Android usage came from devices running a variant of Android 2.3. While the build, known as ‘Gingerbread’, is not the most recent, from a fragmentation perspective it should be good news to developers that such a large majority of users are running the same Android OS version,” says the study.

In other words, a ton of Android phones may be out of date, but at least they are all left behind together. Localitics is clearly a glass half full kind of company. “Add Android 2.2 ‘Froyo’ to the mix, and the majority becomes even more convincing – 23% of Android user sessions were running some flavor of ‘Froyo’. Between the two, Android developers can be confident that they only need to actively target two Android OS builds in order to achieve 96% compatibility with the Android ecosystem,” the study concludes.

When it comes to screen size, Localytics takes a similar tack, pointing out that Android developers can cover most of the bases by going after the most popular form factors. It’s possible, for example, to lock in more than 75% of the smartphone market with just two screen resolutions.

For developers interested in quantity, this is probably good news. But for apps more interested in quality, there is still a wide range of devices that need to be accounted for to ensure that customers get the best experience.

Android’s Bouncer to prevent malware from making it to the Market

Whether accurate or exaggerated, claims of rampant malware apps have haunted the Android Market. Now, Google’s Android team is announcing Bouncer, a new security mechanism that should prevent bad apps from ever making it into the Market.

It’s a programmatic solution that’s allegedly good for both the goose (or users, in this case) and the gander (honest mobile developers who don’t want to wait through a lengthy application process à la the Apple App Store’s).

Bouncer, wrote Android engineering VP Hiroshi Lockheimer on the company blog, “provides automated scanning of Android Market for potentially malicious software without disrupting the user experience of Android Market or requiring developers to go through an application approval process.”

Lockheimer revealed that Bouncer has already been in use for a while and has led to a 40 percent drop in the number of malware downloads from the Market.

This kind of security, if it works and works well, could potentially have very positive effects for the Android Market itself and for the Android operating system’s PR issues — and yes, a lot of the FUD around Android malware is PR, not facts, generated by mobile anti-virus companies and the Apple camp.

Here’s how Bouncer works: The program analyzes new apps submitted to the Android Market as well as apps already in the Market. It also screens developer accounts. Bouncer recognizes malware, trojans, spyware, and a range of other red-flag-type behaviors.

“We actually run every application on Google’s cloud infrastructure and simulate how it will run on an Android device to look for hidden, malicious behavior,” Lockheimer said.

And since Bouncer crawls developer accounts as well as individual applications, it can identify repeat offenders and prevent them from introducing more bad apps into the Market.

“No security approach is foolproof, and added scrutiny can often lead to important improvements,” Lockheimer concluded.

“Our systems are getting better at detecting and eliminating malware every day, and we continue to invite the community to work with us to keep Android safe.”

IBM buys Worklight

IBM announced its own “bring your own device” manager today, as well as its most recent acquisition, Worklight, which helps companies focus on developing applications for multiple operating systems.

BYOB, or bring your own beer, used to be the simple way to get a party going. You’re at a party, you’re thirsty, but oh wait, you brought that six pack. Now you don’t have to awkwardly ask the hostess where the fridge is, wonder if you’ve had too much of her stock, or reach into your pocket to subsidize the party costs. Nope, it’s easy sailing because you brought your own beer, and you’re in control of it.

But it’s that personal control that is scaring IT departments in the bring your own device trend.

IT managers get concerned thinking about the thousands of wild devices roaming their networks. Different companies have come up with solutions to connect those devices and control them, and IBM is now one of them.

The company’s endpoint manager is a product of IBM’s acquisition of Big Fix. Big Fix was a management tool for a number of different devices including laptops and point of sale hardware. Under IBM, that reach now extends to mobile phones and tablets. The software can restrict e-mail access to phones acting oddly, or outside of its normal routine, wipe specific company information from a device that has been lost or stolen, and allows IT staffers to manage the system from one interface.

Apps are also a concern for the BYOD age. It’s hard to monitor apps across different operating systems as well as deploy your own internal applications. IBM’s newest purchase, Worklight, takes care of this by connecting devices’ applications to the respective company’s IT system for monitoring and deploying apps. It works across multiple operating systems including iOS and Android.

Samsung’s Galaxy Note headed to AT&T on Feb. 19 for $300

Skinny jeans wearers need not apply. AT&T announced Tuesday that Samsung’s massive 5.3-inch Galaxy Note — which was one of the most intriguing devices at this year’s Consumer Electronics Show — will be available in the U.S. on February 19 for $300 with contract.

The Galaxy Note occupies a weird space between a smartphones and a tablets, but for some it may just be the perfect balance of the two form factors. Pre-orders for the Galaxy Note will start on Super Bowl Sunday, February 5, and AT&T promises the devices will arrive by February 17 for early birds.

The device features a huge Super AMOLED screen with a 1280-by-800 resolution (so it can play 720p HD videos at full resolution), and it also packs in support for AT&T’s LTE 4G network. The Note comes with a stylus Samsung calls the S Pen, which takes advantage of the large screen space to scribble notes and draw.

Given that the stylus has gone out of fashion in tech (unless you’re Nintendo), it’ll be interesting to see if Samsung’s advanced take on the tool can attract buyers.

Under the hood, the Galaxy Note is similar to most other modern Android devices. It features a dual-core 1.5 gigahertz CPU, as well as an 8 megapixel rear camera and 2 megapixel front-facing camera.

Android app for social management on-the-go

Just a month and half after agreeing to be acquired by Salesforce, social performance management service Rypple has launched a native Android app to make sure managers and employees can connect no matter where they are.

Rypple’s software helps managers improve employee performance through “social goals” and consistent feedback and recognition. It’s in an increasingly competitive market for cloud-based human resource management services. Leading competitors include SuccessFactors, which enterprise giant SAP agreed to acquire for $3.4 billion, Workday, Taleo, Ultimate Software, and Cornerstone OnDemand.

The new Android app will join Rypple’s iPhone app in helping an increasingly mobile work force connect with daily feedback. The key features of the Android app include public recognition for colleague praise, real-time feedback and social goals for tracking priorities.

“The best feedback often comes on the taxi ride back to the office after an important meeting,” Rypple co-founder and co-CEO Daniel Debow told VentureBeat via e-mail. “Rypple’s investment in an Android app lets our users stay aligned with key priorities, get real-time updates, and recognize great work — away from the office.”

The Android app has three versions at different prices: free with basic capabilities; Premium for $5-per-user-per-month with real-time feedback, one-on-one coaching, and recognition applications; and Phenomenal for $9-per-user-per-month with performance review application, Loops, Social Goals 2.0, and integration into existing company work systems.

Before the Salesforce acquisition agreement, San Francisco-based Rypple had raised $13 million in three rounds of funding from Bridgescale Partners, Edgestone Capital Partners, Peter Thiel, and others. The deal with Salesforce is expected to close by the end of April 2012 and when it goes through, Rypple will be re-named as “Successforce.”
