How to set up Face Unlock on your Android Phone

Security is important these days. Our phones carry our lives, so using security features like Face Unlock can give us peace of mind.

As facial recognition software gets more and more sophisticated, it will also become more and more affordable – appearing on many of our electronic devices. While not foolproof – just yet – the Face Unlock feature built into your new Android phone does pretty well.

The argument against using facial recognition software is that it is too easy to “fool” the software into thinking you are the owner. Fortunately, Samsung also includes a “backup” recognition using standard PIN or Pattern input.

Setting up Face Lock on Android phones

Out of the box, your typical Ice Cream Sandwich Android phone does not have security enabled.

Tap the Settings icon to get to the Settings app
Scroll down to Personal and then tap on Security
Tap on Screen Lock and choose:

a. None – for no locking at all

b. Slide- for the typical slide to unlock

c. Face Unlock – to set the Face Unlock feature

d. Pattern – to set a Pattern unlock

e. PIN – to set a standard four digit PIN unlock

f. Password – to set a more secure password to unlock

For our purposes, choose Face Unlock. Read the warning notice that a Face Unlock is less secure than a Pattern, PIN or Password. Now you are ready to have your Android phone capture your face to unlock the phone.

Tap Continue
Move a little away from the front facing camera so your face fits in the Show Your Face screen.
Center your face in the outlined area marked “put your face here.”
You will receive a Face Captured screen if the Face Unlock setup was successful.

Once the Face Unlock is set to your face, you will be prompted to now set up a backup lock. In case the phone does not recognize you (this can happen for a bunch of reasons) it will revert to another method for secure unlocking of the phone.

Choose one of the two backup methods listed; Pattern or PIN

For a Pattern unlock, slide your finger to connect at least four dots in any pattern of your choosing.

Repeat the pattern to confirm the choice.

For a PIN unlock, simply input a four digit PIN – repeat to confirm.

Using the Face Unlock feature on your Android phone

Using Face Unlock is very simple, just turn on the device and look at the front facing camera. You will see an area in the middle of the screen to capture your face, try to put yourself in the same position as you did when you set up Face Unlock.

If you get an error message telling you that the phone did not recognize you, it will automatically default to the backup unlock method chosen.

Either input your PIN or complete the Pattern than you originally chose and the phone will unlock.

Setting the time before the phone locks

Depending on your phone, it might lock immediately after the screen goes off. On my EVO 4G LTE, the default was to lock immediately and on my HTC One X, the default was to lock after 15 minutes. Locking immediately is sort of a pain since you then have to look at your phone every single time you turn it on. I found that setting the Lock phone after field to 5 minutes was a good amount of time.

Go to the Settings menu
Go to Security
Tap on the Lock phone after tab
Choose the desired time

All in all, Face Unlock works surprisingly well on the new Android phones. It is easy to set up, fun to use and it adds the necessary layer of security so that if someone were to “steal” your device, they would not have access to your personal information.

If you are very security conscious, remember that this is perhaps the “least” secure option of those listed as screen unlock choices – but it is certainly much more secure than no security at all.

Microsoft Office PowerPoint 2010 allows its user the freedom to use audio-visual content in his presentation easily. It supports a large variety of Video Files such as Video Files, Windows Media File, MP4 Video, MPEG-2 TS Video and Window Media Video File, along with Audio Files such as ADTS Audio, AIFF audio file(aiff), AU audio file(au), MP3 and MP4 audio files.

The Audio and Video Content can be added in Microsoft Office PowerPoint 2010 using the Media Clips Option Under the Insert Tab.

How to use a Shape as a Text Box in Microsoft Powerpoint?

Among many features of Microsoft Office PowerPoint 2010, it also allows its user to use Shapes as Text Boxes, which means you can add a Shape in your slide and then you can use it as a Text Box to write text inside it, making the presentations more beautiful.

The shapes can be added in Microsoft Office PowerPoint 2010 using the Shapes Option Under the Insert Tab.

Steps to add a Rectangular Shape and Use it as a Text Box:

1. To open the dropdown menu, click on the Shapes icon.

2. Clicking on the Shapes icon opens a dropdown menu containing a list of available shapes like Lines, Rectangles, Basic Shapes, Block Arrows, Equation Shapes, Flowcharts ,etc. Click on the first Rectangle Shape as shown in the screenshot below.

3. Now the cursor changes. Click on the area you want to create your rectangle and move the cursor away to create the rectangle.

How to Compress PDF File to Send as an Attachment in Your Email

Have you ever come across this type of situation: You need to send a PDF file urgently to your friend over email; you attached the PDF file and clicked on send button and in a while you get an error message back saying the email could not be delivered because of the large size. So how do you compress a PDF file to send it as an email attachment?

Due to embedded images in the PDF file the size of the PDF file increases and causes problem while sending as an attachment. So before sending such type of PDF files as an email attachment you need to shrink or compress the PDF file.

There are several ways of compressing a PDF file and it also depends on the type of OS you are using, so the process of compressing a PDF on MAC might be different than that of a Windows system. Here in this article I will explain how you can compress a PDF file on MAC, Windows as well as online (Platform independent).

Compress a PDF file on MAC

If you are a MAC user then compressing the size of the PDF file is really easy and it does not require any software download as MAC has an inbuilt application (Preview.app) which can be used to compress the PDF file in seconds.

The Real Process:

1. The very first process is open the PDF file with Preview application.

2. After opening the file choose “File” at the top of the screen and then click on “Print” or You can also the use the shortcut key (“Command key” + Letter “P”) to print the file, this will pop up a dropdown menu.

3. On the dropdown menu, you can see a button in the bottom left-hand corner labeled as “PDF”. Click the button and another dropdown menu will appear, immediately below the “PDF” button.

4. Click on the “Compress PDF” from this dropdown menu and now you can see a window indicating the compression is taking place.

5. After the compression a Save window will appear, here you need to type the name of the file and location of the file and click on the Save button.

That’s all, now your PDF file is compressed and ready to send over email.

Compress a PDF file on Windows OS

Windows system does not have any inbuilt application to shrink the PDF file size. But probably you can use tools like Adobe Acrobat, FileMinimizer PDF (Commercial, but 30 day free trial is available) ().

Using Adobe Acrobat to Compress

1. Open the PDF file using Acrobat.

2. Clink on “Document” and then “Reduce PDF Size”.

3. You will be prompted to select the version and enter where you want to save the file. That’s all, now it will take 1-2 min for shrinking the PDF file.

You can also use FileMinimizer PDF tool on your Windows system to shrink the size of the PDF file.

As mentioned earlier,there are two methods of selling a Blogger Blog.First through transferring the Administrator Rights and other through exporting your blog contents.Both of these methods are discussed below:

#2- EXPORTING BLOG CONTENT

Log into your Blogger Dashboard and navigate to Settings>>Other.Now click on Export Blog link.It will save a file on your computer.The screenshot of the same is shown below:

Import and Export option only works for Blog Posts and comments.You can save this content on your hard drive or any other external storage device.It means that importing the same will add blog post and comments to your blog.However they will not appear until you will publish them manually.To publish all contents,make sure that you have checked the option which shows “Automatically publish all imported posts”.
To Import Contents,again navigate to Settings>>Other and click on “Import Blog” link.Here you will have to select the file which you just saved in above step.

That’s it.You have exported your blog posts and comments to other blog.Enjoy.

This is for those of you who are having trouble syncing ringtones to your iPhone. You may have created or purchased ringtones, and believe they are in your iTunes library but after syncing they still don't appear on your phone. There are a number of possible reasons for this. Here is a checklist to follow when syncing ringtones to your phone:

Confirm that they really are ringtones: right-click on the files in iTunes, select "Get Info", then verify on the Summary tab they say "Kind: Ringtone". If they don't then you must first convert them to ringtones and import them into your iTunes library before syncing them to your phone. (Guides for how to do this are shown in the References section at the bottom.)
If they are purchased ringtones, confirm that your computer is authorized for the Apple ID(s) used to purchase them (by going to iTunes > Store > Authorize this computer).
Verify that the the ringtones are 40 seconds or less.
Confirm that you have checked "Sync only checked songs and videos" on the Summary tab of your iTunes sync settings.
Confirm that you have checked the box next each of the ringtones that you want to sync to your phone in the Tones folder of your iTunes library. (If you don't see the Tones folder check the Reference section below for how to fix this.)
Confirm that you have checked "Sync Tones" on the Tones tab of your iTunes sync settings. (If you don't see the Tones tab then you haven't yet imported any ringtones into your iTunes library.)

Soft Reset

If you are having problems with your phone, sometimes a soft reset will fix the problem. The Nokia Lumia 520, 620, 720 and Nokia Lumia 820, and earlier Lumia devices (710, 610 and 510) arrive with a removable battery that makes it easy to perform a soft reset. To perform a soft reset: remove the back cover from your phone and remove the battery. Re-insert the battery and replace the back cover and restart your device.

The Nokia Lumia devices have brought many new editions of windows phone 8 and formerly windows phone 7.5, 7.8 to the market. However, in order to offer differences between some of the devices, particular networks overseas have renamed the original products in a different format Nokia Lumia 522, 720 and Nokia Lumia 810/820. To help you with this, we have covered the above devices in our soft reset and hard reset instructions for the devices.

However, the Nokia Lumia 1020, 920, 925 and 928 and earlier Lumia devices (800 and 900) feature a unibody design, which means the phone is sealed and you do not have access to the battery. In this quick guide we’re going to show you how to do a factory reset on you Nokia Lumia 800 Windows handset. Remember that this will erase all data on the phone, so ensure you backup anything vital before proceeding.

Method 1

From the main menu either swipe right-to-left on the touchscreen or press the right arrow button on the top right of the interface.
Scroll through the icons until you get to the ‘Settings’ menu. Then, tap the ‘Settings’ icon.

I have been asked this same question so many times and today, I am given you a straight forward answer to the question. So here we go guys… what you need to get your adsense approved;

Do you have the above requirements? If “yes”, let’s proceed to the main step and if “No”, go get your self the requirements.

If you don’t have a blogger blog you can get one now by creating an account here, but if you already have one go to your dashboard and paste the articles you have.

Remember: Do not copy and paste contents that are outside your domain (copy and paste) or they might reject your account.

If you have pasted the entire 22 or so articles, now will be the perfect time to apply for the Google adsense program.

Now go to your blogger dashboard and you’ll see 3 icons that looks exactly like the below image

Update: 2013 Extras
Samsung has confirmed that the Galaxy S3 will get most of the new software features introduced in 2013's Galaxy S4. These include things like Smart Scroll, the new camera interface and the S Translator, which translates text between languages.

When will the update arrive? At the time of writing, we're not sure. With Galaxy S4 fixes likely on top of Samsung's priority list, it could take a few months.

Bonus 1: App download problems
A common issue with Android is that sometimes apps will refuse to download from the app store. It’s frustrating. Very frustrating.

If you encounter this issue, there are a few things to try. The first is to ensure you have enough internal memory. Try deleting an app or game you don’t play/use regularly any more.

If that doesn’t help, you need to try clearing the cache of the Play Store app. You’ll find this option in the Play Store’s entry in the Apps Manager menu of Settings. If this fails too, you’ll need to remove your current Google account from the device in the Accounts section of Settings, restart the phone and re-add it.

Bonus 2: Quick-access settings via notificationsThe main function of the square function switches within the notifications bar is to let you turn battery-sapping features on and off quickly. However, they also function as quick shortcuts to the full Settings sub-menus they are linked to.

Just hold down on, for example, the Bluetooth switch to be taken to the Bluetooth section within Settings. If you’re a hardcore user, this little tip may save you some time.

Bonus 3: How to sync with iTunes
iTunes is not designed to sync with a Samsung Galaxy S3, but with the help of some third-party software you can make the two hook up.

The app you need is called Easy Phone Sync, available from Google Play. What this does is talk to a desktop counterpart app, called – you guessed it – Easy Phone Sync, available from the company’s website.

This lets you transfer your iTunes library over to the phone without much faffing, including photos and podcasts as well as music.

Interface

1. Smart stayHere’s a neat little gimmicky Samsung Galaxy S3 feature that could come in very handy if you like to read books or web articles on your phone. Smart stay uses the user-facing camera to scan for your eyes looking at the screen. If it finds them, it’ll keep the screen backlight active, rather than let it sleep. You can activate the feature from within the Display submenu of the full Settings menu.

2. Font changer
If you don’t like the standard, fairly serious look of the Samsung Galaxy S3, you can change the font used in the menu systems for a more light-hearted style. There are three other fonts available from the off, and you can download more from Google Play. The font changer option is in the Display submenu.

3. Check out OAP mode
Android can be confusing for people who aren’t massive tech fans. We’re not quite sure why such people would have bought as fancy a phone as the Samsung Galaxy S3, but we’re not here to judge. For this eventuality, Samsung has provided an “easy” UI mode, which simplifies the look of home screens, using large, blocky preset widgets. You can try out this mode in the Home Screen Mode submenu within Settings.

4. Motion controller
The Samsung Galaxy S3 takes the “kitchen sink” approach to features, shoving in everything it can manage. Motion controller options are evidence of quite how far this extends. You can flick between home screens by flicking the phone left and right, and that's just the beginning. There are bundles of options here, from zooming in and out of web pages by tilting the phone up and down to being able to take a screengrab by wiping the side of your hand across the screen. Check out the full list in the Motion submenu in Settings.

5. Don’t forget folders
To make effective use of your home screens, you need to think about using folders, which store app shortcuts. To make one, just hold a finger down on an app shortcut and drag it onto another app shortcut.

6. Quick search bar access
The quickest way to perform a quick web search on the Samsung Galaxy S3 when on a home screen is by using a dedicated gestural shortcut. Hold down the Menu soft key for around two seconds and you’ll be taken directly to a Google search bar.

7. Customise your lock screens
The custom lock screen of the Samsung Galaxy S3 features a row of icons that can be used to take you directly to any app. By default, the lock screen houses the phone caller, SMS hub, S Voice app and the camera. There’s a dedicated Lock Screen submenu in Settings that lets you define your own shortcuts.

8. Face unlock – it ain’t magic
Here’s a pro tip – if you want to keep your phone secure, Face Unlock isn’t the way to do it. Face Unlock recognises the geometry of your face to unlock the Samsung Galaxy S3 without any fingers needed. It’s more of a fun feature rather than a hardcore security measure, and someone that looks a bit like you may well be able to unlock your phone. Heck, even a picture of you will do it.

9. You can gesture type, like Swype
The Samsung Galaxy S3 features its own Samsung virtual keyboard. One of the neat extras it offers is gesture typing, which lets you drag a path over the letters in words rather than tapping them one-by-one. Many people find it much faster than standard typing, and with a good corrections algorithm it’s arguably more accurate too. Swipe-y typing is enabled in the keyboard menu, under the heading continuous input.

10. You can have up to seven home screens
Samsung gives you control over how many home screens there are in your Galaxy S3. To add or delete home screens, head to a home screen and use the pinch gesture to zoom out and see the whole roster of screens. From there you’ll be able to add additional ones, or drag existing ones into the virtual dustbin.

Calling

11. Contacts book touchscreen gesturesFrom within the Contacts book, you can call and text people directly using touchscreen gestures. A right-to-left swipe across a contact entry will message them, and a left-to-right swipe will call them. It’s a lot quicker than tapping on their entry and then tapping again on their phone number.

12. Install Facebook and Twitter for quickie contact-gathering
The Samsung Galaxy S3 is a fantastic social networking tool, but you can make your social apps work for you too. Install the Facebook and Twitter apps and you can use your friends and followers lists to pull contacts into your phone’s Contacts book.

13. Avoid people with block mode
If you’re just a little too good at making friends and influencing people, you may want to check out the block mode. This lets you control the sorts of notifications, calls and alerts you get at certain times of the day. The most obvious use is to stop people from ringing you while you’re asleep. The Samsung Galaxy S3 also lets you keep up a list of “approved” contacts that can get through at all times. You’ll find the blocking option in the Settings menu.

Battery life

14. Make use of notification bar settings options
The quickest way to increase battery life is to manage the connections that the Samsung Galaxy S3 uses. 3G is one of the biggest drains on a smartphone’s battery, cutting stamina from several days to a day and a half. The pull-down notifications bar lets you turn off connections within a screen tap or two. Connections we recommend managing include Bluetooth, 3G, Wi-Fi and GPS.

15. Investigate power saving mode
When your battery level gets a bit low, the Samsung Galaxy S3 comes with its own emergency power saving mode that cuts down the power-draining features used by the phone. These include haptic feedback, screen brightness, CPU speed and the background screen colour in the internet browser.

16. Boost battery with a dark background
The Samsung Galaxy S3 has an AMOLED-type screen. As it does not use a universal backlight, this display uses more power when more of the screen is bright white. Use a dark or black background and you should find that the battery lasts that little bit longer.

17. You can change brightness from the drop-down notification bar
Along with connectivity settings, the notifications bar also has a brightness slider. It’s the quickest way to change brightness. There’s also an “Auto” tickbox, which lets the Samsung Galaxy S3 use the ambient light sensor on the front of the phone to judge how bright the screen needs to be, altering the backlight automatically depending on the surroundings.

Music

18. You can record radio using the FM tunerFM radio isn’t really cool anymore, we’ll admit, but it uses a whole lot less battery than streaming internet radio over 3G – and it doesn’t demand you’re connected to the internet either. The FM radio uses your earphone cable as an antenna, and the Samsung Galaxy S3 even lets you record radio to the internal memory. You can then easily pull recorded files off the phone to archive on a computer, if you like.

19. Check out the custom EQ setting in the music player
Don’t like the sound that your earphones produce? The Samsung Galaxy S3 lets you tweak audio output with a custom equaliser. There are loads of presets included, or you can choose your own settings, with a 7-band EQ, 3D effect, Bass boost, reverb, and Clarity treble optimiser. You’ll find the shortcut to the EQ on the playback button bar of the music player.

20. Use Music Square for auto playlists
Gimmick or genius? Music Square tip-toes along the divide. It analyses your music and decides whether it’s relaxed or exciting, joyful or passionate. You can then pick exactly what mood you’re after using the Music Square interface – which looks a bit like a Korg Kaosspad. It works remarkably well, and is a boon if you like playlists but can’t be bothered to make them.

21. You can edit videos in the video player
The integrated video player of the Samsung Galaxy S3 is excellent for several reasons, primarily because it can play loads of different video types. It does more besides, too. You can trim videos from within the app, which is handy for those who love making their own little videos using the phone’s camera.

22. Check out AllShare
AllShare is Samsung’s take on DLNA. Sound like tech jargon? DLNA is a wireless standard that lets you stream video and music over a Wi-Fi network. AllShare uses DLNA and packages the tech into an easy-to-use package, especially if you’re piping content between Samsung brand devices. Plenty of Samsung gadgets support AllShare include tablets, Blu-ray players and TVs.

23. HDMI adapter
The Samsung Galaxy S3 does not have a dedicated video output, but there is a way to output video from the phone without using Wi-FI – the Samsung MHL adapter. This uses the microUSB port on the rear of the phone to send up to HD video and surround sound to TVs and other devices. The £20-odd adapter plugs in to the socket and ends in an HDMI socket, letting you jam in a standard HDMI cable.

24. Consider a battery booster

It’s not widely available in the UK – the 16GB and 32GB editions are far more common – and it’s not really worth the extra cash. The Galaxy S3 has a microSD memory card slot, and expanding the memory using one of these cards is much cheaper than spending the extra on a phone with greater internal memory.

Interface

How to set a default home screenThe Samsung Galaxy S4 lets you have up to seven home screens, however there will always be just the one that is your “default” home screen. This is the screen your phone will head to when you awaken from sleep or skip from the apps menu to the home screen.

To pick your default home screen, pinch inward with a two-finger gesture on a home screen to zoom out and see all your current home pages. On top of each one is a little house symbol. Tap the symbol on the screen you want to be your default to select it.

How to add and remove home screens
When in the zoomed-out home screen view, you can also add and delete home screens. Hold a finger down on one of the little thumbnails until you feel a little haptic blip and drag it to the “remove” dustbin up at the top of the screen.

If you have less than seven current home screens you will also see an empty home screen placeholder with a “plus” sign on it. Tap this to add a new blank home screen. How to add widgets to a home screen
As with virtually any Android phone, to add widgets to a home screen you just need to hold a finger down on an empty bit of home screen until a menu pops-up. One of the options within the menu is “apps and widgets”. Tap on it and you’ll be taken to the apps/widgets menu.

Hold a finger down on a widget to add it to a home screen. Alternatively, from the apps menu you can head right into the widgets section using the tab up top.

Using and customising Air ViewAir View is a very clever application of capacitive screen technology. It lets you interact with your Galaxy S4 without even touching it. For example, you can hover a finger over a web page to get a magnified view of what you’re pointing at.

There are four types of Air View functionality and you can switch them on and off in the Air View submenu that you’ll find in the My Device tab of Settings.

How to take a screenshot
Indispensable to some, useless to others, the Samsung Galaxy S4 offers a screenshot function. Just press and hold the power and select buttons at the same time until the screen flashes, and an image of what’s on-screen will be saved to your phone’s gallery.

How to kill TouchWiz without a hack
If you root your phone, you can install a completely different version of Android on it. But it’s not something we recommend for beginners. If you don’t get on with the Samsung interface, there’s a much easier way to change things.

What you need is a Launcher app from Google Play. This slaps a new interface on the phone – and you can turn it back within the Settings menu. Top launcher apps to try include Smart Launcher, Next Launcher and Action Launcher.

Connectivity

To 4G or not to 4G? The Samsung Galaxy S4 has 4G connectivity, but is it worth using? At present, the outlay is hard to justify. EE is the only network that offers 4G connectivity at the time of writing, and there are significant core issues with the plans it offers.

To get a plan that has enough of a mobile data allowance to make 4G worthwhile is extremely expensive. 8GB a month costs £56 p/m and 20GB is £76. In our opinion, 1GB data (£41/month) is just too little to justify 4G speed. Prices will come down once more carriers get involved later this year.

Using NFC – what is it good for?
The Galaxy S4 is one of a growing number of phones with NFC, near-field communication. It has a few key uses – the most exciting being mobile payments. However, this only works in a handful of high street shops (it’s used primarily for low-cost purchases too).

Realising this, Samsung has put NFC to its own uses. S Beam is Samsung’s own connection standard that melds NFC and Wi-Fi Direct to make transferring items between compatible phones devices easy and quick. You’ll find the NFC menu toward the bottom of the Connections tab in Settings.

Using Wi-Fi Direct
Wi-Fi Direct is a kind of Wi-Fi connection that doesn’t require a connection to a router – letting you transfer files between Wi-Fi Direct devices without actually having any internet connectivity. Wi-Fi Direct has been embedded across the Touchwiz in the Galaxy S4. You’ll find it in the Share options of the photo gallery, for example. It looks just like a Wi-Fi symbol.

What is DLNA?
If you look through the Connections part of the Galaxy S4’s Settings menu you’ll find mention of “sharing over DLNA”, but little talk of what it actually is. DLNA is a communications standard that uses Wi-Fi to transfer media files between devices using Samsung’s AllShare media streaming tech. So if you want to send video, audio or photos to a TV wirelessly and you don’t have a Samsung TV, this is the option you want. Of course, your TV (or other media device) will need to be connected to Wi-Fi and support DLNA.

What is Kies? Do I need it?
Kies is Samsung’s desktop sync software, the equivalent of iTunes. The neat part is that you can use it to wirelessly sync files over your home network.

Should you use it? We don’t. The Samsung Galaxy S4’s internal storage shows up as a media disk drive when plugged into a computer, so it’s not necessary. And it’s not all that good either.

Notifications

Get rid of the annoying Samsung “whistle”One of the dead giveaways that you’re using a Samsung Galaxy phone is the irritating “whistle” notification tone that accompanies text message alerts by default. Why not be different, and less annoying, by changing to something less predictable?

You’ll find the options to alter this under “default notification sound” in the Sound submenu of Settings. Customising your notifications panel shortcutsThe Samsung Galaxy S4 gives you masses of control over which quick power options are accessible from the standard pull-down Android notifications menu. You can have up to five toggles for phone features in the bar – for things like Bluetooth and Wi-Fi.

To choose which ones you want to put in the limelight, tap the icon in the top-right of the notifications bar. This gives you the full power toggle selection. Then tap the pencil button up top to customise where these all sit. Drag up your favourites to the top to put them at your fingertips.

Set blocking mode for a good night’s sleep
There are few things that are as annoying as being awoken by a bleating phone just as you’re nodding off. Blocking mode is here to stop that from happening. It lets you stop your Galaxy S4 from alerting you with notifications, calls, alarms and the LED indicator during certain times (which you set).

However, you can also set certain “golden contacts” that can get through to you at all times. The locking mode has its own menu within the My Device tab of Settings.

Customising what the LED indicator does
There’s a multi-colour LED indicator hidden behind the white front fascia of the Galaxy S4, and you can choose what it lights-up for. It has its own sub menu within the My Device tab of Settings. In it you’ll find tick boxes to enable/disable indicators for charging, low battery, notifications and voice recording. The charging indicator is the one you’re most likely to want to turn off.

Phone calls and Contacts

Auto rejectionHave a bug-a-boo stalking you? The Samsung Galaxy S4 can be setup to automatically reject their calls. You can maintain a whole list of people to reject if you like.

To start up this list, go to the My Device tab of the Settings menu, tap Call, Call Rejection, then Auto Reject List. Here is where you pick your rejection numbers. You can also setup messages to send to “rejected” people who try to call you.

Personalised ringtones
Individual ringtones are setup not within the Call menu, but the contacts list. Tap on one of your contacts and in the menu you’ll find options to set specific message tones and ringtones. There’s a list of preset ones but you can also pick another sound from within your music apps (just tap “Add” at the bottom of the ringtone selection menu.)

Tackling robot auto dialler machines
The Samsung Galaxy S4 has a few tricks up its sleeve to help you tackle those super-annoying automated robot voice dialler setups – such as when you call the bank.

When tapping in a phone number, you can insert pauses to avoid having to wait for the system to witter on with the phone next to your ear. Press the menu button while dialling and you can add a 2-sec pause (they can be stacked). Of course, you need to know the system pretty well before this feature will be of much use.

How to get your contacts filled up
Using an Android phone, it’s easy to get your Android-stored contacts restored to a new phone. However, if that’s not enough you can also use social network apps to get your contacts book filled up with info.

The days of having to write numbers down in a notepad are long, long gone. Download the Facebook and Twitter apps (if you’re on those networks) and you’ll be prompted to add contacts info from them to your Galaxy S4’s contacts section.

Browsing and data

Monitor data usageOne native Android 4.2 feature that has stuck in the Galaxy S4 is the data usage monitor. You’ll find it near the top of the Connections tab in Settings. It shows you the data you’ve used over the last month in a graph, and tells you what apps have used the most data.

You can set your own mobile data limit, and make the phone disconnect mobile data once it’s used up, in order to avoid any annoying extras charges on your mobile bill.

Request Desktop Mode is a must
The Samsung web browser has a mode that forces the phone to view the desktop version of a website rather than the mobile one. In most cases, the desktop version will work better unless you have poor vision.

Five inches and 1080p resolution is more than enough for mobile websites. You’ll find the Desktop view tickbox in the Settings menu, which is accessed by pressing the menu soft key when in the browser.

Best Apps and Games

Top show-off gamesWant to show off the raw power of your Galaxy S4? The best way to do so is with a high-end game. Our top recommendations include Real Racing 3, Dead Trigger and Riptide GP. The first two are free – the latter costs £1.39.

Essential AppsAfter Samsung packed the Galaxy S4 with so many inbuilt features, you may not need to head straight to the Google Play app store. However, apps we found we couldn’t do without include Spotify, Netflix, TuneInRadio, BBC iPlayer and BBC iPlayer Radio. And of course, the Twitter/Facebook apps.

Fun Free GamesA forte of Android is free games. Some games you have to pay for on iOS are free on Android. Top picks include Angry Birds, Angry Birds Space and the rest – but you probably know those already. Others to check out include Hill Climb Racing, Candy Crush Saga, Real Racing 3, Whale Trail Frenzy and Temple Run 2.

How to delete appsMost of you may know this already, but you can’t simply delete apps from your apps menu – holding a finger down on one just sends it to a home screen.

To get rid of an app, you need to do so from the Applications Manager of the Settings menu. It’s under the More tab. Tap on an app’s entry here and you’ll find an uninstall option, as long as it’s not a pre-installed app you can’t get rid of.

Comparing the Samsung Galaxy S4 and the Galaxy S3

No matter whether you're deciding if you should wait and get the Samsung Galaxy S4 next week, making sure you don't have buyer's remorse from just having purchased your Galaxy S3, or perhaps just plain curious, CNET makes it easy to compare the two sibling handsets with this chart.

Physically, the GS4 didn't get any bigger. In fact, it even sports a thinner build and weighs a hair lighter. But with a slimmer bezel, its 5-inch full HD Super AMOLED touch screen had room to expand, and the display now sports a higher pixel density.

Also new is its quad- or octo-core processor. Similar to the situation when the GS3 debuted, which CPU is available will depend on where you live. The U.S. will receive the 1.9GHz quad-core Snapdragon 600.

Both cameras also got a bump, with the rear shooter jumping from 8 megapixels to 13 megapixels. Other changes include running the newerAndroid 4.2.2 Jelly Bean, a beefed-up battery, and a slew of new software features. How to set lock screen and security options on Galaxy S3

With NFC and all your personal information, its time to keep your Galaxy S3 safe from potential thieves and peeping neighbors.

It is much more convenient not to use security options on your Samsung Galaxy S III (S3) or other Android phone. However, this is sort of like playing Russian roulette with your data and personal information.

Imagine if you lost your phone and someone was able to access everything inside. What would you lose? What would the “ripple effects” be? Could your bank information be compromises? Your credit? In today’s day and age we just can’t take a chance of our sensitive information falling into the wrong hands.

Fortunately, the Galaxy S3 offers some easy and powerful built-in tools to help keep you phone, your information and your peace of mind safe and secure.

The Lock screen

Security starts with the Lock screen. If someone can pick up your phone and turn it on and immediately have access to all your data – you have not security enable. You might as well just give your wallet to a stranger on the street.

To access Lock screen security, just:

Pull down the Notification drawer
Tap the Settings icon
Scroll down to Security

The top item under Security is Screen security. Initially, Screen lock is set to Swipe – meaning that you just swipe across the screen to unlock the phone.

Touch the Screen lock tab and you see the following options:

Swipe – Just Swipe across the device to unlock it
Motion - Just tilt the Galaxy S3 forward to unlock it
Face unlock – See this article about using facial recognition to unlock
Face and Voice – Uses the Face unlock features but adds a level of vocal recognition as well
Pattern – Select a pattern of lines between dots to unlock
PIN – Select a four digit PIN to unlock the phone
Password – Select a Password to unlock the phone
None – No security at all

Next to each option is also the level of security provided with Swipe and Motion offering the least amount of security and Password offering the highest security.

After experimenting with all of these, I eventually settled on PIN security as being the most convenient and accurate and offering at least some security to the device.

Using the With swipe lock option

Once you set your Security option for the Lock screen, you will see the option to put a check mark in a box that says With swipe lock. This allows you to still have the cool rippling of the water on the Lock screen. You swipe across and then input your PIN or use the Face unlock feature.

Lock screen options

Choosing the unlock method is just one of the choices you have with regards to your Lock screen. The Galaxy S3 has many more options from which you can choose. To access these, go back to the Security options and scroll to Lock screen options.

To enable Lock screen Shortcuts, make sure the button is in the ON position. These allow you to have the shortcut icons on the Lock screen as we talk about in this tutorial.

You can set the Information ticker to put news or stock info on the Lock screen by turning the switch to the ON position. You then need to set your country and your news ticker options on the following screens.

To enable Camera quick access, make sure that switch is in the ON position. When this is enabled, you have to hold your Galaxy S3 straight when you are on the Lock screen, then you tap and hold the screen and rotate the device (all at the same time) to open the Camera. This is as cumbersome as it sounds and I found it to not be particularly useful.

You can have a Clock on your Lock screen and/or show a Dual clock when roaming by checking off the next box and turning the switch to the ON position.

To show weather on the Lock screen, just check off the Weather box.
Similarly, if you want the Ripple effect when you swipe the screen, put a check in the next box.
To show Help text on the Lock screen, just put a check in that box.

The last box is intriguing – it is entitled Wake up in lock screen. When this is checked you can set a series of audible Wake up commands for your phone. You can set up to four Wake-up functions:

Unlock
Check for missed calls
Check for missed messages
Open Camera
Check schedule
Play music
Record Voice

Once you set your options, from the Lock screen just speak the command you have set and it will be initiated. Remember, however, that if you have a PIN or other security feature enabled, you need to still “unlock” the phone before the command can be initiated.

So, for example, I set one of the audible commands to be Open Camera. When I got to the Lock screen, I said “Open Camera” and I then was taken to the screen to put in my PIN and only then did the Camera app open.

Set Lock automatically feature

One user adjusted option is just how long you want your Galaxy S3 to wait before it goes into Lock mode – requiring whatever security you have set up to take effect.

If you choose to Lock the device immediately – each time the screen shuts off you will have to input your PIN or use security to get back in. I like to choose 5 minutes as a good amount of time to Lock automatically.

Lock instantly with power key

When this feature is enabled, each and every time you shut off the screen wit the Power key – as opposed to just letting the screen go blank – it will lock the device requiring whatever security you have enabled to use the device again.

Vibrate on screen tap

Some people prefer haptic feedback when putting in their PIN or tapping the screen in any way – just check this box to enable this feature.

Owner information

This one requires a bit of thinking. If your device is locked, having Owner information really doesn’t help you. However, if you check the box that says Show owner info on lock screen, this can be helpful.

Imagine that you lose your phone and it is locked. When someone finds your phone, what will they do? A good Samaritan might try to look for the owner information to return the phone. So, if you check the box that says Show owner info on home screen and then put your name and some information – it will show up when they try to turn on the phone.

TIP: Put a phone number and reward statement on the Lock screen, and perhaps the person who finds your phone will call you and return the phone. Remember, however, to not put the phone number associated with your Galaxy S3 – as that won’t really do a lot of good!

Encryption options

The next Security options have to do with Encryption. Encryption adds an added level of security to protect your data and information. If you choose to encrypt the device, you will receive a warning that the process takes over an hour and that your phone needs to be charged to at least 80%.

You can also Encrypt your SD card which will then require a Password to decrypt it each time it is connected. You have choices with regards to the SD card to encrypt new files, all files and/or exclude multimedia files.

Password options

To make passwords visible, put a check in the box under Passwords. The issue with this is that if someone were looking over your shoulder, they might see the letters or numbers you input. The challenge is that if you don’t have the box checked, you need to be pretty sure you are typing the correct letters or numbers since you won’t be able to see them as you type.

Device administration

Here, you can set up Device administrators and allow Unknown sources. Putting a check next to Unknown sources allows you to download and install non-Google Play market apps on the Galaxy S3. For example, a manufacturer might have a specific app, let’s say for their Bluetooth headset. If the app is not in Google Play, you would need to download it from the manufacturer. Checking this box allows you to do that – but it comes with a security risk since it is not a Google Play approved app.

Credential storage

The Galaxy S3 will store certain collected credentials the more you use the phone. You can tap on the Trusted credentials tab to see all of your trusted credentials stored in the phone.

To allow the installation of certificates from device storage tap on the Install from device storage tab – but it is likely you will get a message saying that there is no certificate file found.

To clear all of your credentials – just tap on the Clear credentials tab.

Wrap up

As you can see, there are lots of Security options for your Galaxy S3. You can have your phone wide open for the world to see or you can lock it down tighter than a drum. The choice is really yours.

Obviously, using some security is what we would recommend in order to safeguard your personal information. Most of us don’t need to encrypt our data – but some of us do. Most of us should have at least a PIN or use the Face unlock for more security than just Swipe or Motion which really don’t offer any security at all.

Be smart and be safe. You never want to lose your phone – but phones can be replaced. Personal information, when lost, can have a much more devastating effect on your well-being. Experiment with the various security options until you find a good balance that works for you, isn’t too cumbersome and protects your information.

How to Setup Face Unlock on Android 4.0

Verizon’s Samsung Galaxy Nexus has finally arrived and that means that Google’s latest mobile software, Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, has finally arrived for those of you living in the United States. The software brings quite a few new features along with it and one of those features is something called Face Unlock which is an alternative to your normal password screen.

In the past, Android owners have made use of PIN numbers or swipes or patterns to protect their phones. But now, with Ice Cream Sandwich, you can use your own beautiful mug to unlock your Galaxy Nexus.

Those of you with phones upgradable to Android 4.0 will be able to use this feature once the software rolls out.

It’s a pretty nifty feature, maybe not the most secure, but nifty nonetheless and we’re going to show you how to get it set up on your Android 4.0 smartphone.

First thing’s first. Head to the Settings on your device. It should look similar to what you see below. Once you’re there, you’ll want to select Security.

You will now see a bunch of Security options. Select Screen lock.

You will be brought to a screen like this, presenting you with a variety of security options. Face Unlock is what you’re here for so select Face Unlock.

Google will then tell you that Face Unlock is now as secure as your other options. But that’s cool right? Right. Select Set it up.

You’ll now be taken to a screen that gives you some hints on how to setup the photo of your face that will act as the unlocking mechanism on your phone. Take heed and select Continue.

You will then see your beautiful face, courtesy of your device’s front facing camera. If you followed step 5, you be taken to the below screen within a couple of seconds. It took me one or two tries. HitContinue.

You’ll then be presented with this screen. This screen is important is it will be your backup for when Face Unlock doesn’t work. It doesn’t happen often but it does, so choose wisely. PIN is exactly what you think it is. You enter a numerical password and then use that to unlock your phone. Pattern is the familiar series of swipes.

Assuming you can follow directions, you will be met with this screen. You should be proud. That’s all it takes folks. You’ll now be able to unlock your Android 4.0 smartphone with your beautiful face.

Just be careful leaving your phone around Doppelgangers.

Oh, and don’t forget to hit OK.

Google Wallet PIN security cracked - here's what you need to know

Google Wallet's PIN security has been cracked, but there's a caveat -- this currently only is an issue if your phone is rooted. Not rooted? No worries. And with that said and done, here's the deal:

Your Google Wallet PIN (Personal Identification Number) is stored encrypted on your device, and a brute-force method was found to expose the SHA256 hex-encoded PIN information inside the database. This method, which was irresponsibly released to the public, can find the PIN without any incorrect attempts in the Wallet app itself, negating the five-try rule the application has for PIN entry. (See it in action after the break.)

Now here's the not so sexy way to describe it all. You'll need to have a phone with Google Wallet, AND have rooted your device, AND have not set a secure lock screen, AND then lose your phone. The person who finds it THEN can use the app the fellows at zvleo have made and since distributed to brute-force the PIN and THEN can use your phone to make payments, just like they could if they found your credit card, which likely would be quicker and easier than any of this.

Google has been notified and already knows how to fix the issue, but there's a problem. To make it more secure, Google will have to move the PIN information to be controlled and maintained by your bank. This not only will require some changes to the terms of service, but then we're relying on corporate banking institutions to keep our information safe. I'd wager that Citigroup's servers are easier to break into than Google's, and then you have the same issue all over again.

A better way to fix the problem would be to force users to use a better password. PIN information can be cracked so easy because it only uses four numbers. This means that there are only 10,000 possible combinations, and even a portable computer like your Android phone can pull off that sort of brute-force attack. Change the passcode to something like Fgtr5400&d77 -- using a combination of letters, numbers and symbols -- and it's far less likely to be broken, and even less likely to even be used because it's not convenient. It's a Catch-22 -- a PIN is easy to use and remember, but it's also more easy to crack.

I'm not going to tell you to stop using Google Wallet, nor am I going to tell you to stop rooting your phone. I am going to tell you to pick it up, and put a passcode on the lock screen now, before you lose it.

The System Bar and virtual buttons are present across all apps, but can be dimmed by applications for full-screen viewing. You can access each application's contextual options in the Action Bar, displayed at the top (and sometimes also at the bottom) of the screen.

Multitasking is a key strength of Android and it's made even easier and more visual on Android 4.0. The Recent Apps button lets you jump instantly from one task to another using the list in the System Bar. The list pops up to show thumbnail images of apps used recently — tapping a thumbnail switches to the app.

For incoming calls, you can respond instantly by text.

Rich and interactive notifications let you keep in constant touch with incoming messages, play music tracks, see real-time updates from apps, and much more. On smaller-screen devices, notifications appear at the top of the screen, while on larger-screen devices they appear in the System Bar.

Home screen folders and favorites tray

New home screen folders offer a new way for you to group your apps and shortcuts logically, just by dragging one onto another. Also, in All Apps launcher, you can now simply drag an app to get information about it or immediately uninstall it, or disable a pre-installed app.

On smaller-screen devices, the home screen now includes a customizable favorites tray visible from all home screens. You can drag apps, shortcuts, folders, and other priority items in or out of the favorites tray for instant access from any home screen.

Resizable widgets

Home screens in Android 4.0 are designed to be content-rich and customizable. You can do much more than add shortcuts — you can embed live application content directly through interactive widgets. Widgets let you check email, flip through a calendar, play music, check social streams, and more — right from the home screen, without having to launch apps. Widgets are resizable, so you can expand them to show more content or shrink them to save space.

New lock screen actions

The lock screens now let you do more without unlocking. From the slide lock screen, you can jump directly to the camera for a picture or pull down the notifications window to check for messages. When listening to music, you can even manage music tracks and see album art.

Quick responses for incoming calls

When an incoming call arrives, you can now quickly respond by text message, without needing to pick up the call or unlock the device. On the incoming call screen, you simply slide a control to see a list of text responses and then tap to send and end the call. You can add your own responses and manage the list from the Settings app.

Swipe to dismiss notifications, tasks, and browser tabs

Android 4.0 makes managing notifications, recent apps, and browser tabs even easier. You can now dismiss individual notifications, apps from the Recent Apps list, and browser tabs with a simple swipe of a finger.

Improved text input and spell-checking

The soft keyboard in Android 4.0 makes text input even faster and more accurate. Error correction and word suggestion are improved through a new set of default dictionaries and more accurate heuristics for handling cases such as double-typed characters, skipped letters, and omitted spaces. Word suggestion is also improved and the suggestion strip is simplified to show only three words at a time.

To fix misspelled words more easily, Android 4.0 adds a spell-checker that locates and underlines errors and suggests replacement words. With one tap, you can choose from multiple spelling suggestions, delete a word, or add it to the dictionary. You can even tap to see replacement suggestions for words that are spelled correctly. For specialized features or additional languages, you can now download and install third-party dictionaries, spell-checkers, and other text services.

Powerful voice input engine

Android 4.0 introduces a powerful new voice input engine that offers a continuous "open microphone" experience and streaming voice recognition. The new voice input engine lets you dictate the text you want, for as long as you want, using the language you want. You can speak continously for a prolonged time, even pausing for intervals if needed, and dictate punctuation to create correct sentences. As the voice input engine enters text, it underlines possible dictation errors in gray. After dictating, you can tap the underlined words to quickly replace them from a list of suggestions.

Data usage controls let you monitor total usage by network type and application and then set limits if needed.

Control over network data

Mobile devices can make extensive use of network data for streaming content, synchronizing data, downloading apps, and more. To meet the needs of you with tiered or metered data plans, Android 4.0 adds new controls for managing network data usage.

In the Settings app, colorful charts show the total data usage on each network type (mobile or Wi-Fi), as well as amount of data used by each running application. Based on your data plan, you can optionally set warning levels or hard limits on data usage or disable mobile data altogether. You can also manage the background data used by individual applications as needed.

Designed for accessibility

A variety of new features greatly enhance the accessibility of Android 4.0 for blind or visually impaired users. Most important is a new explore-by-touch mode that lets you navigate without having to see the screen. Touching the screen once triggers audible feedback that identifies the UI component below; a second touch in the same component activates it with a full touch event. The new mode is especially important to support users on new devices that use virtual buttons in the System Bar, rather than dedicated hardware buttons or trackballs. Also, standard apps are updated to offer an improved accessibility experience. The Browser supports a script-based screen reader for reading favorite web content and navigating sites. For improved readability, you can also increase the default font size used across the system.

The accessibility experience begins at first setup — a simple touch gesture during setup (clockwise square from upper left) activates all accessibility features and loads a setup tutorial. Once accessibility features are active, everything visible on the screen can be spoken aloud by the standard screen reader.

Contacts and profiles are integrated across apps and social networks, for a consistent, personal experience everywhere — from incoming calls to emails.

People and profiles

Throughout the system, your social groups, profiles, and contacts are linked together and integrated for easy accessibility. At the center is a new People app that offers richer profile information, including a large profile picture, phone numbers, addresses and accounts, status updates, events, and a new button for connecting on integrated social networks.

Your contact information is stored in a new "Me" profile, allowing easier sharing with apps and people. All of your integrated contacts are displayed in an easy to manage list, including controls over which contacts are shown from any integrated account or social network. Wherever you navigate across the system, tapping a profile photo displays Quick Contacts, with large profile pictures, shortcuts to phone numbers, text messaging, and more.

Unified calendar, visual voicemail

To help organize appointments and events, an updated Calendar app brings together personal, work, school, and social agendas. With user permission, other applications can contribute events to the calendar and manage reminders, for an integrated view across multiple calendar providers. The app is redesigned to let you manage events more easily. Calendars are color-coded and you can swipe left or right to change dates and pinch to zoom in or out agendas.

In the phone app, a new visual voicemail features integrates incoming messages, voice transcriptions, and audio files from one or more providers. Third-party applications can integrate with the Phone app to add your own voice messages, transcriptions, and more to the visual voicemail inbox.

Rich and versatile camera capabilities

The Camera app includes many new features that let you capture special moments with great photos and videos. After capturing images, you can edit and share them easily with friends.

When taking pictures, continuous focus, zero shutter lag exposure, and decreased shot-to-shot speed help capture clear, precise images. Stabilized image zoom lets you compose photos and video in the way you want, including while video is recording. For new flexibility and convenience while shooting video, you can now take snapshots at full video resolution just by tapping the screen as video continues to record.

To make it easier to take great pictures of people, built-in face detection locates faces in the frame and automatically sets focus. For more control, you can tap to focus anywhere in the preview image.

For capturing larger scenes, the Camera introduces a single-motion panorama mode. In this mode, you start an exposure and then slowly turn the Camera to encompass as wide a perspective as needed. The Camera assembles the full range of continuous imagery into a single panoramic photo.

After taking a picture or video, you can quickly share it by email, text message, bluetooth, social networks, and more, just by tapping the thumbnail in the camera controls.

Redesigned Gallery app with photo editor

The Gallery app now makes it easier to manage, show, and share photos and videos. For managing collections, a redesigned album layout shows many more albums and offers larger thumbnails. There are many ways to sort albums, including by time, location, people, and tags. To help pictures look their best, the Gallery now includes a powerful photo editor. You can crop and rotate pictures, set levels, remove red eyes, add effects, and much more. After retouching, you can select one or multiple pictures or videos to share instantly over email, text messaging, bluetooth, social networks, or other apps.

An improved Picture Gallery widget lets you look at pictures directly on the home screen. The widget can display pictures from a selected album, shuffle pictures from all albums, or show a single image. After adding the widget to the home screen, you can flick through the photo stacks to locate the image you want, then tap to load it in Gallery.

Live Effects for transforming video

Live Effects is a collection of graphical transformations that add interest and fun to videos captured in the Camera app. For example, you can change the background behind them to any stock or custom image, for just the right setting when shooting video. Also available for video is Silly Faces, a set of morphing effects that use state-of-the-art face recognition and GPU filters to transform facial features. For example, you can use effects such as small eyes, big mouth, big nose, face squeeze, and more. Outside of the Camera app, Live Effects is available during video chat in the Google Talk app.

Sharing with screenshots

You can now share what's on your screens more easily by taking screenshots. Hardware buttons let them snap a screenshot and store it locally. Afterward, you can view, edit, and share the screen shot in Gallery or a similar app.

Cloud-connected experience

Android has always been cloud-connected, letting you browse the web and sync photos, apps, games, email, and contacts — wherever you are and across all of your devices. Android 4.0 adds new browsing and email capabilities to let you take even more with them and keep communication organized.

Powerful web browsing

The Android Browser offers an experience that’s as rich and convenient as a desktop browser. It lets you instantly sync and manage Google Chrome bookmarks from all of your accounts, jump to your favorite content faster, and even save it for reading later in case there's no network available.

To get the most out of web content, you can now request full desktop versions of web sites, rather than their mobile versions. You can set your preference for web sites separately for each browser tab. For longer content, you can save a copy for offline reading. To find and open saved pages, you can browse a visual list that’s included with browser bookmarks and history. For better readability and accessibility, you can increase the browser’s zoom levels and override the system default text sizes.

Across all types of content, the Android Browser offers dramatically improved page rendering performance through updated versions of the WebKit core and the V8 Crankshaft compilation engine for JavaScript. In benchmarks run on a Nexus S device, the Android 4.0 browser showed an improvement of nearly 220% over the Android 2.3 browser in the V8 Benchmark Suite and more than 35% in the SunSpider 9.1 JavaScript Benchmark. When run on a Galaxy Nexus device, the Android 4.0 browser showed improvement of nearly 550% in the V8 benchmark and nearly 70% in the SunSpider benchmark.

Improved email

In Android 4.0, email is easier to send, read, and manage. For composing email, improved auto-completion of recipients helps with finding and adding frequent contacts more quickly. For easier input of frequent text, you can now create quick responses and store them in the app, then enter them from a convenient menu when composing. When replying to a message, you can now toggle the message to Reply All and Forward without changing screens.

For easier browsing across accounts and labels, the app adds an integrated menu of accounts and recent labels. To help you locate and organize IMAP and Exchange email, the Email app now supports nested mail subfolders, each with synchronization rules. You can also search across folders on the server, for faster results.

For enterprises, the Email app supports EAS v14. It supports EAS certificate authentication, provides ABQ strings for device type and mode, and allows automatic sync to be disabled while roaming. Administrators can also limit attachment size or disable attachments.

For keeping track of incoming email more easily, a resizable Email widget lets you flick through recent email right from the home screen, then jump into the Email app to compose or reply.

Android Beam for NFC-based sharing

Android Beam is an innovative, convenient feature for sharing across two NFC-enabled devices, It lets people instantly exchange favorite apps, contacts, music, videos — almost anything. It’s incredibly simple and convenient to use — there’s no menu to open, application to launch, or pairing needed. Just touch one Android-powered phone to another, then tap to send.

For sharing apps, Android Beam pushes a link to the app's details page on Google Play. On the other device, the Google Play app launches and loads the details page, for easy downloading of the app. Individual apps can build on Android Beam to add other types of interactions, such as passing game scores, initiating a multiplayer game or chat, and more.

Face Unlock

Android 4.0 introduces a completely new approach to securing a device, making each person's device even more personal — Face Unlock is a new screen-lock option that lets you unlock your device with your face. It takes advantage of the device front-facing camera and state-of-the-art facial recognition technology to register a face during setup and then to recognize it again when unlocking the device. Just hold your device in front of your face to unlock, or use a backup PIN or pattern.

Wi-Fi Direct and Bluetooth HDP

Support for Wi-Fi Direct lets you connect directly to nearby peer devices over Wi-Fi, for more reliable, higher-speed communication. No internet connection or tethering is needed. Through third-party apps, you can connect to compatible devices to take advantage of new features such as instant sharing of files, photos, or other media; streaming video or audio from another device; or connecting to compatible printers or other devices.

Android 4.0 also introduces built-in support for connecting to Bluetooth Health Device Profile (HDP) devices. With support from third-party apps, you can connect to wireless medical devices and sensors in hospitals, fitness centers, homes, and elsewhere.
