5 Hack for Online Teaching Especially for Primary School Students

Before understanding Hack for Online Teaching you should understand the student. The students of middle school and high school have that kind of maturity to take and understand the online class. But the main problem comes when you are going to teach primary school students.

For primary school student, you need to be a bit active So how can we make our young children's online class more interesting and energetic.

Just as we have to ensure our classes are friendly environments where students feel safe. We need to ensure this is also done in an online class. Where they are on their own at home in front of the computer most of the time.

Start with simple activities that reflect the daily routines you had in your face-to-face classroom.

This will give your students a sense of security in the new environment. And your online teaching skill will be increasing by time.

Hack -1

The first hack to use, props a lot of props there are. Lots of props you can use it. You can use flashcards puppets, face masks, solid objects around you to make the online class interesting, and also your online teaching has become the same as offline.

You must use the object that can attract the children. Instead of using the PPT and diagram, use the object around you. For example for giving the example of the noun, you can use a pet in your house and another thing which is related to the children.

And for explaining solid, liquid, and gas, do not show the only picture. You can use the liquid in your water bottle and for solid, use solid objects around you, and for the gas, you can use ballon. In case the thing is not available you can simply use the picture for the reference.

Hack-2

Be expressive, Express your self confidently and energetically. Now how can you be more expressive in an online class as you are in an offline class? In your offline class, you have your whole body language engaging with the student.

This teaching method you know very well but the challenge arises when you go for online teaching.

And there are so many things that are present in an offline classroom. As an example whiteboard, smartboard, teaching resources, and most important you are present there.

If any student does another thing you can stop them and can keep their full attention in class but in the online teaching method, you can't.

So how can you do all these things in your online classes? For these, you can make your facial expression, modulate your voice, move around your camera these are the best online teaching style or methods you should apply it.

For example, Instead of saying normally " A lion jumps on the table in the circus and audience clap for the lion".

You can slowly jump and give the expression like a lion and clap in between the story then it will more interesting and energetic. If you can follow this, the children are more engaged with you.

Hack-3

The third thing to remember is, To take a single concept or topic at a time don't throw several topics or concepts at a time. For example, if you are taking a topic from mathematics let say "Even number" then you can teach only "Even number" don't go for others.

If you are throwing numbers of topics and concepts then it would be harsh on them and they not able to understand a single topic . This is not the way for online teaching.

So pick only one topic and explain it in a different-different way because they don't have the proper school or normal environment so how can they understand different things at a time.

Hack-4

Do lots of fun activities for them during the class so they can seat in front of you don't restrict them from doing the activities with you. For example, you can tell a short story between the study so the can concentrate in the class. And this will enhance your online teaching skills.

Activate them during the class, asked them to do something for all the students in an online class, asked some questions, unmute them and let them speak in front of the whole class, ask them to write in the chatbox, something related to the topic.

Use topics that children really want to talk about with each other online.

Children talk about pets and the funny things they do or even an imaginary pet, or have them suggest favorite games or a game they would like to try as a class, etc.

You can use non-verbal, physical responses online to communicate their understanding of new language, such as stand up if it’s true, raise your hands if it’s false.

Hack-5

To get them active asked them to do yoga. You can do some exercises that they can follow. Tell them how to inhale and exhale. Give permission to jump on the floor for 10 at their place. Let them active maybe they are missing on this one that they used to have in their regular school.

By doing the yoga and exercise the feel relax and refresh and after, they concentrate in the online class.

Before teaching online you should know some characteristics of primary school children.

Primary school children learn through play.
Primary school children want to belong to a community that is safe, beautiful, and good.
They explore the world with wonder.
Young children use stories to construct meaning.

Primary school children express themselves in complex ways. They have a hundred languages, a hundred hands, a hundred thoughts, a hundred ways of thinking, of playing, of speaking. Primary school students construct and express their understanding of the world around them in a variety of complex ways.

They express their thoughts, emotions, questions, and needs through different modalities. One painting may describe a child’s experience visiting a relative, stacked blocks may represent a hospital; sketches, scribbles, or wobbly letters may tell the story of sibling rivalry; and a song or dance may communicate a child’s understanding of the seasons.

These are the 5 hacks for online teaching, especially for primary school students.

Follow these steps and you will get a better result. And you will easily take online classes even you will also highly engaged with the students.

cheer!!

Academic Pressure and Fear of Failure

2020-04-25T08:18:00.004+05:30

Academic Pressure and Fear of Failure

Pressure is a phenomenon developed by external force applied. There are different kinds (types) of pressures like kinematic pressure, thermodynamic pressure etc.

One kind is ACADEMIC PRESSURE. This is the pressure that is developed because of desire to excel performance.

Academic pressure is the stress that comes from schooling and academic performance . Often a lot of pressure that comes along with pursuing a degree and one’s education.

This pressure starts due to the demands on high school students from outside sources such as family, friends, faculty and also from within.

But during schooling the students may get mental support by parents and their friends.

The main pressure(academic pressure) they feel is during their college days because at this time students are far from and have very few friends.

Nowadays competition is at its peak and everyone is in the race of achieving more than each other, this leads to more pressure(academic pressure) in the students of this generation. They want to be the best and start taking stress out of every small situation. This stress(academic stress) also involves the fear of academic failure.

How does academic pressure affect (effect of academic) mental health ? Excessive level of academic stress can result in an increased prevalence of psychological and physical problems like depression, anxiety, nervousness and stress related disorder or mental health , which in turn can affect their academic results.

Depression is becoming the most common mental health problem college students suffer these days. It also reflects one’s academic frustration, academic anxiety, academic conflicts ,academic stress and academic pressure.

REASONS:

What are the causes of academic pressure?

*These pressures mainly comes from:

*Parental expectations

*Forced to study specific subjects i.e by parents or relatives.

*Fear of failure

*Issues with time management

*Grades: Seen as the most important part of our life.( how to overcome academic grades pressure?)

1.Parental expectations

Some parents are at their children’s back, daily pushing them to excel academically. Parental pressures to pursue academic success have both positive and negative effects on children.

This usually happens because educating a child is now considered as an investment for their better future or sometimes the parents want their child to be like others (who usually get high scores).

They find it as a competition. They expect that their children become like the same guy in the newspaper who got 99.99% marks.

But in my view a child’s future will be bright only if he/she doesn't feel any kind of pressure or burden on them.

And the mental abilities of all are not the same.

Some are quick learners while others are average or poor according to their ability of understanding but this doesn't mean that they can’t do anything. There is talent in everyone, the thing we’ve to do is to find them at the right time.

2.Forced to study specific subjects

Parents always want to live their dream through their children. They want to fulfill all the desires which they left incomplete.

They want their children to work in a profession in which they have a good chance of succeeding economically.

They feel that the social science and arts in general do not offer as much potential for financial success as engineering, medical, business and law do.

But in this thinking they forget to ask their children about their interest which leads to pressure on them.

As I mentioned above, the ability and talent of every person differ from each other and therefore it is necessary to know it at the right time so that you can overcome the pressure before it happens.

Parents also have to understand that this is not their era where only doctors and engineers are respected and valuable, this is the time of equality and each n every profession have their own identity and importance at their place.

3.Fear of failure

Students want to get good grades so desperately that they sacrifice creativity and choose the easy way out simply to get better grades.

They come to prefer easier tasks not because they are lazy but because they are rational. The race of good grades are so popular that there’s neither an entry form nor any eligibility criteria.

Everyone from this generation wants to be the best and popular and thanks to social media which teaches everyone that popularity is the most important part of your life(we’ll come to this also).

Sometimes peer pressure also creates the fear of failure. Many parents start comparing their children with others and put pressure on them to be like them and ask them for the same score.

This makes the students uncomfortable and even after so much hard work they feel the fear of failure.

4.Issues with time management

Time management is a big issue seen in not only students but also adults. It is important to know your schedule and manage your day according to that. You will find many videos or articles on “How to do time management?”

but the best solution is to make a time-table just like you college or school time table(you can add some brakes too 😉).

Don’t panic if your tasks are pending and you don’t have enough time just take a deep breath and start completing it because taking stress is not a solution it’ll affect your health and will kill your time but try to manage your day as everyone has only 24 hrs.

5. Grades: Seen as the most important part of our life

“Grades are just a number it cannot define who you are”

Nice. Right? Everyone loves these motivational quotes but only as their status, no one's gonna understand the depth of these quotes.

Grades have become the mirror of a student's knowledge and all of them take it as if this is the only thing which defines their ability.

That’s not the students fault but this is our education system, they have made the grades so important. Yes, the grades are important but it doesn’t define your real potential towards or your interest. You should try to get good scores but you don’t need to collapse for it.

What causes stress in university students? Yes, your high school marks matter in your entrance for college and your college marks matter for your job application but you can find the score which is sufficient for all of these entrances.

POSITIVE EFFECT OF ACADEMIC PRESSURE

How does academic pressure affect students ? (healthy)

Don’t take stress for anything. Pressure can teach you taking responsibility which can help you in your Job line and can make you flexible at your work.

Academic pressures are positive in many ways as they make you responsible and flexible.

It teaches you interacting with people and sometimes it acts as a motivator to accomplish goals. Stress may lead to motivation causing us to complete a difficult task or event that we must deal with.

It not only motivates you to do better in tests, work and events but it can also push you to your fullest potential. It helps learning the best way to overcome and manage stressful situations.

WAY TO REDUCE ACADEMIC PRESSURE

How do you overcome academic pressure?

1.Join a group study.

2.Take help from seniors and faculties.

3.Utilize your professor as a resource.

4.Make sure to be regular in class.

5.Reduce social commitments & engagements.
6.Do yoga and regular exercise to reduce stress.

ASSIGNMENTS: STUDENT’S NIGHTMARE

2020-04-23T21:11:00.001+05:30

ASSIGNMENTS: STUDENT’S NIGHTMARE

Let me start from the beginning.

Remember the childhood days when our parents used to say “Dear just clear your matriculation with good marks (90% or above) then your life will be sorted.”

And we are Indians so we have to listen to our parents. Wright!

So we cleared our matriculation, went to our parents with our marks sheet but that was not it. They had a new offer actually a combo offer.

This time they quoted “My dear, just clear your 12^th grade with good marks(the same as matriculation) and clear a college entrance (but they gave you only two choices MEDICAL or ENGINEERING(IIT) based on your 12^th stream which was also selected by them) and get admission in a recognized university, after that your life will be sorted.

And we did same (tried to).

After the admission I got to know that my parents came up with me in the college too, in the form of unit tests, semester exams, seminars, internships and the most terrible ASSIGNMENTS.

Like my parents these also quotes “DEAR please complete us to pass this semester and complete your graduation, so that you can have a sorted life.

So, moral of the above scenario is that the student’s life is always surrounded by these pressures and anxieties.

And Yes I’m talking about the academic pressures here.

Many students experience nightmares every night due to upcoming exams or pending assignments.

But. There is no need to worry as these are a part of every students life during academic years.

I also used to be very upset by these pending assignments.

We got at least 30-35 assignments in one semester and each should be of at least 40-50 pages long and this is really horrible.

We all know that we feel a bit of anxiety before our exams. This anxiety sometimes appears in the form of a dream.

Exams nightmares are so real that we actually wake up convinced we just failed an exam. Or sometimes, we are to complete the pending assignments, and the deadline haunts us. One could dream about submitting the assignments before the due date but you have not completed them before the deadline.

These causes insignificant stress in students and start interrupting the sleep regularly.

This is the stage of learning and exploring new things and any kind of stress or pressure can break their interests in a particular field.

College or university are those learning areas where teachers teach and clear all concepts of a subject and expect students to learn or explore it more on their own.

These tasks or assignments are considered as massive unhappiness and irritation for the students, as they feel studying in the university and college, is sufficient.

But there are many solutions to overcome these nightmares, like you can find online experts or you can take the help of your classmates or your seniors etc.

In spite of all these you need to focus on your goal because your knowledge will take to you to the final destination and the exams and assignments are just a milestone.

In today’s world, education is not completed without deep knowledge of the subject. Research plays a major role in understanding a particular area and completing the assignments or projects. Usually, when it comes to teaching, assignments are very important in education.

Libraries are the primary and easy source of information since older times as they are available in all educational institutions and can be easily accessed by the students. Public libraries are also provided by the government for common people in cities and the digital library is also provided by the government.

Another important way to gain knowledge is face to face interviews with the veteran people who have lots of experience in their field.

Furthermore, subjects teachers and mentors are also experts in their subjects and are the storehouse of information. They can also help in clearing the basic concepts.

Mostly students imagine that educational assignments are insignificant but the fact is that assignments are given to assist the students in self-study and clear their concepts or ambiguities regarding any subjects.

Being a student most of the students think that it is not our task to learn ourselves as it is the responsibility of the teachers to teach us.

However, this fact cannot be denied that a teacher cannot deliver every single detail to every student related to any subject.

We will have to understand that teachers and family will not come to help us in every stage of our life as we have to do it ourselves.

The actual reason behind the purpose of assignments is to improve the learning skills of students.

Because if the students start learning on their own then there are more chances they can grow more.

Academic assignments enhance the creativity among students as they learn more when they practice or read something on their own.

This practice makes the students exam ready and gives a way to solve the unseen problems.

These assignments boost the knowledge in a particular subject and helps the students to develop their writing skills.

It teaches them time management and develop an exploring habits in students.

DEMERITS OF ASSIGNMENTS: STUDENT'S NIGHTMARE:

Yes, there are some demerits also.

Students of new generations need to gain practical knowledge because the paperwork will not help them in their jobs or in the places where they have to prove themselves but the knowledge they gained is going to showcase their talent.

Keeping in mind the merits of the assignments, a university can keep oral test or class representation or viva in the place of written assignments.

Oral tests can improve the speaking ability of students without any hesitation.

And class representation can vanish the fear of representing something in front of many peoples.

Viva can help the students during their interviews. There they can learn how to interact with the person having more knowledge than them.

Pending assignments and its deadline may lead to stress and pressure in the students which can reduce their academic performance.

This may lead to stress in the students. These nightmares can end sleep and make them weak both mentally and physically.

To overcome stress you can do yoga or can go for a small vacation.

POSITIVITY: ASSIGNMENTS: STUDENT’S NIGHTMARE

In last I would say that there is nothing to worry about these assignment pressure as this will only increase stress in you and will damage your skill.

There are many solutions to avoid this pressure, and I have mentioned some of the above. You will only gain if you positively think this.

Believe in your spirit and learn new things. That’s how you learn and grow.

How to become a doctor

2018-10-16T15:11:00.004+05:30

How to become a doctor

Part One of Five:
Preparing in High School

Get good grades. In order to get into the best colleges and the best medical schools, you need excellent grades first and foremost. The better your grades, the more seriously you'll be taken as a candidate for the programs you wish to get into and the more opportunities you'll have along the way to make connections and network

Take the complete science curriculum (and math) at your school. Those who do best in pre-med programs and in medical school have been dealing with math and science from an early age. Take all the courses your high school offers in math and science so when serious classes roll around in college, you're prepared.

Volunteer. Many people desire to become a doctor because it seems like a great way to help people. Not only will volunteering give you a chance to help people, but it will also look good on your CV, if you do decide to pursue medicine. Consider volunteering at a hospital, free clinic, doctor's office, or as an EMT. Medical work experience can be tough to find; write to your family doctor, and use family connections to find shadowing opportunities.

If you're 16 or older you can look at shadowing doctors abroad with schemes like Gap Medics. Also, be open to volunteer work that is not directly medical related, such as working in a soup kitchen or Habitat for Humanity.

If you want to become a engineer click here

This can show you what departments appeal to you, in addition to looking good on a college application.

4 Start thinking about what kind of doctor you want to be while in high school. You'll be applying to colleges/universities soon, so it's good to know what kind of doctor you think you want to be. There different kinds of doctors, so colleges have different pre-med programs. Some doctors take a baccalaureate degree in biochemistry, biology, etc., and while your interests may change, you'll still wind up at a good school, if you focus on what you're looking for presently.

Take the ACT, SAT, or both, and nail it.A good score on the ACT or the SAT, in combination with excellent grades and volunteer experience will be hard for a good four year college to turn down. Submit your scores to a number of schools to up your chances of getting accepted.

If you're not happy with your score, opt to not send it, and simply retake the test. Now that you're familiar with the structure, you'll likely do a bit better.

The PSAT is a good practice for the SAT and can even earn you scholarships if you are very good!

Part Two of Five:
Going to College

Choose the college that most speaks to you. To find the right college for you, consider academic reputation, size, distance from home, location, cost, and, of course, their academic program.

Don’t worry about medical school yet. While some schools do have a medical school that's affiliated with their undergrad program, it is not necessary to go to one of these schools.

Choose your major. Doctors come from all walks of life, though most are biology majors. That being said, any math or science major would provide you with a useful curriculum.

More and more medical schools are looking to include some liberal arts majors and those with majors off the beaten track to have a wider variety of perspectives at their school. Even if you're an English major, you could still become a doctor!

Spread out the courses that med school requires. Choose an institution with a strong pre-med program, or even one that is affiliated with a particular medical school. (Some institutions offer a program which allows you to complete your undergraduate degree and medical degree at the same time.) In order to qualify for admission to medical school, you will need to take the following prerequisite courses taken in your bachelor's degree program (best spread out), along with other subjects which will be outlined in the particular medical school's admissions requirements. This will keep you fresh on preparing for the MCAT:

1 year of Inorganic Chemistry with lab

1 year of Organic Chemistry with lab

1 year of English

Many schools require 1 year of calculus or college level math

Some medical schools prefer a course in Biochemistry

Take classes in all sorts of different subjects. Simply put, being a doctor isn’t for everyone. Taking a wide variety of classes may show you something you enjoy even more. Don't fry yourself with only math and science courses – your coursework will suffer, if you take on too much.

Manage your time wisely. College taken seriously is hard. It's a time of transition, making friends, and setting up yourself for success for the rest of your life. To ensure that your future is as bright as possible, you'll need to manage your time wisely. Make a schedule for yourself for studying, and stick to it.

Be an ideal student. In order to get into medical school, you'll not only need excellent grades, but you'll also need to demonstrate that you are a responsible, well-rounded person. Through your community service record, show that you enjoy helping people.

Get to know your teachers and supervisors and earn their respect – their recommendation letters will be essential for your getting interview invitations from medical schools.

Part Three of Five:
Going to Medical School

Take the MCAT during your sophomore or junior year of college.Take the Medical College Admissions Test (MCAT), or if you live in the UK, take the UK Clinical Aptitude Test (UKCAT) and the BioMedical Admissions Test (BMAT). Strive to get above a 10 in each of the first three sections, in order to get a competitive MCAT score. Take a practice test to find out where your baseline is and to know how much progress you need to make.

The MCAT has 4 sections - Biological Sciences (Biology and Organic Chemistry - 77 questions), Physical Sciences (Physics and Inorganic Chemistry - 77 questions), Verbal Reasoning (65 questions), and Essay Writing (2 essays).

Consider taking a review course such as those offered by Kaplan, if review courses are helpful to you. You will be tested in the following areas, the first three of which are graded on a scale of 1-15.

Know which kind of med school you want to attend. There are many kinds you can choose between:

Allopathic medical schools are the traditional medical schools that confer a Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) degree to graduates. This is likely the type of school you think of when you think of a "medical school." There are 141 allopathic medical schools in the United States, as well as dozens in Caribbean countries which cater to American students.

Osteopathic medical schools offer you a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (D.O.) degree. They are very similar to allopathic schools except that they have additional courses in Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment (OMT). D.O. doctors can be general practitioners or surgeons and can prescribe medications as M.D.s do.

Pharmaceutical schools offer you a Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm D.) degree. These types of doctors don't treat the patients but dispense prescription medications and advise patients on their proper use and potential risks.

Naturopathic Medical schools offer you an N.D. degree. These type of doctors suggest foods and herbs rather than artificial drugs. These type of doctors are part-doctor and part-herbalist. There are not many of these schools and doctors.

Homeopathic medical schools offer you an H.D. degree. These type of doctors treat the diseases and conditions with tiny doses of drugs derived from herbal extracts.

Apply to medical schools in your junior year of college. In your junior year, send in applications, to the schools to which you'd like to apply, with your letters of recommendation, but only request transcripts be sent after the application should have arrived, or else the school will have no file setup and no reason to keep you transcripts. Apply to some you don't think you can make it into, some schools you think you have a shot at, and some schools you feel present safe odds to admit you. It's going to take quite a while to do all the forms and request the transcripts be sent, so start early!

The average med student applies to 13 schools. Generally, transcript and test fees go down with each school you apply to to be less of a financial burden.

Consider additionally applying abroad to boost your chances. An increasing number of students are looking to (mainland) European Medical Schools where competition is often less fierce and costs are lower. This is especially applicable to UK applicants where you are restricted to applying to a maximum of 4 Medical Schools through the UCAS system. Degrees in (mainland) Europe are usually MD and are recognised globally. Tuition is usually in English.

Ace the interview. While there is a well-defined path to becoming a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) or Doctor of Medicine (MD), success depends more upon an undying commitment to your goals and interests, than on presenting the usual scores and forms exactly as every other applicant does. When you interview for a spot in a medical school, the admissions committee wants to see that you have been and are committed to achieving your goals – no matter what they are. ^[1]

The interview will be everything from asking you about your volunteer experiences to your opinions of healthcare reform. Regardless of how it you feel that it went, be sure to give a thank you when all is said and done to show that you take this very seriously.

Go in expecting to work very, very hard. Medical school is no joke. It's hours of studying and work that piles up and seems to never end. Your social life outside of school will suffer, and you won't sleep nearly as much as you want to. It's a very demanding commitment.

That being said, 95% of the students entering medical schools do end up earning their M.D. degree.^[2] The application process is stringent enough that only the best of the best are accepted. If you're accepted, it's likely you can do it.

Know what to expect in medical school. Once you've applied and been accepted to medical school, here's what you can expect overall:

Take classroom-based classes. For the first two years, you will be learning the fundamentals of the medical sciences through the study of the core subjects: anatomy, physiology, histology, biochemistry, pathology, pharmacology, and microbiology. You'll also be learning to take medical histories and how to perform a physical exam, in addition to learning the principles behind diagnosing diseases.

United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE), Step 1 and/or the Comprehensive Osteopathic Medical Licensing Examination (COMLEX) Level 1 - tests your knowledge of all topics studied in years 1 and 2; in most schools, you must pass this in order to progress to the third year.

Third year - receive training consisting of 1 to 2 months of each of major specialities (internal medicine, general surgery, pediatrics, OB/GYN, surgery, psychiatry); work with patients under the supervision of experienced physicians in hospitals and clinics, learning acute, chronic, preventive, and rehabilitative care, as well as being taught social skills that give the doctor a bedside manner.

Determine the speciality you want to pursue.

Fourth year - Take electives based on preferred speciality; apply to and interview for the residency programs; pass the USMLE step 2 or ComLEX Level 2, which includes a Clinical Knowledge portion (CK), tests topics covered in year 3 and a Clinical Skills portion (CS), tests your ability to take a history and examine a patient.

Take your first test. At the end of the 2nd year all medical students take the first part of the United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE-1), administered by the National Board of Medical Examiners (NBME). The purpose of this test is to determine your medical competency and to see whether you should forward your education and are suitable for licensure.

United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE), Step 1 and/or the Comprehensive Osteopathic Medical Licensing Examination (COMLEX) Level 1 tests your knowledge of all topics studied in years 1 and 2; in most schools, you must pass this in order to progress into the third year.

In your 3rd and 4th years, start rotations. For your third year, there will be 1-2 months of each of the major medical specialties (internal medicine, general surgery, pediatrics, OB/GYN, surgery, psychiatry), known as rotations. You'll work with patients under the supervision of experienced physicians in hospitals and clinics, learning acute, chronic, preventive, and rehabilitative care, as well as the social skills that give a doctor good bedside manner.

In your fourth year, you'll take electives based on your preferred specialty; apply to and interview at residency programs; pass the USMLE Step 2 or COMLEX Level 2, which includes a Clinical Knowledge portion (CK, tests topics covered in year 3) and a Clinical Skills portion (CS, tests your ability to take a history and examine a patient).

Medical school will take a bit longer, if you want to do a PhD in some related field as well as the M.D. or D.O. degree.

Part Four of Five:
Becoming a Licensed Doctor

Take the 2nd and 3rd part of your boards. Towards the end of your med school career and then at the beginning of your first paying gig, you'll take the 2nd and 3rd part of the test you took at the end of your 2nd year. This is to gauge the knowledge you've learned in the last two years and to make sure you've kept up and are on track.

Part 2 is taken in the 4th year of medical school and tests whether you can apply your medical knowledge in providing patient care under supervision.

Part 3 is taken in the first year of residency (internship) and tests your ability to apply your medical knowledge in providing unsupervised medical care.

Decide on your specialty. Different specialties require different amounts of time doing a residency and getting the necessary experience and accreditation. Here is the length of time you'll be spending in residency according to your specialty, as a paid specialist receiving on the job training at a teaching hospital aftermedical school:

Anesthesiology - 4 years

Dermatology - 4 years

Emergency Medicine - 3-4 years

Family Medicine - 3 years

General Surgery - 5 years

Internal Medicine - 3 years

Neurology - 4 years

Obstetrics and Gynecology - 4 years

Pathology - 4 years

Pediatrics - 3 years

Psychiatry - 4 years

Radiology - 4-5 years

Go for interviews at hospitals where you want a residency. When you've graduated medical school, the next step is finding a residency position. Contact the teaching hospitals you're interested in and that have available residency positions. Interviewing with each will set you up in the National Resident Matching Program.

Get “matched” to a residency program. The NRMP runs the matching program sort of like sororities and fraternities. They'll match up hospitals with the students they want and the students with the hospitals they want whenever possible by conferring with both parties. Nearly every applicant gets matched.

This is a commitment from which is not easy to withdraw. If you don't like the location for residency where you've been placed, you may just have to grin and bear it.

Expect to spend at least three years doing your residency. In the first year you are an called an intern. Residency training takes place in a hospital setting in which you earn a salary (on average, $48,000/year) while you are trained in your specialty. It begins in the first week of July after you graduate from medical school (in May). You are responsible for patients and are supervised by senior residents as well as attending physicians. Residency training can vary in length from 3 years (e.g. family medicine, internal medicine, pediatrics, anesthesiology, critical care medicine, infectious diseases, psychiatry, preventative medicine, urology, and neurology) to 7 or more (e.g. general surgery).

Some specialties (e.g. ophthalmology, dermatology) require one year of general medicine or general surgery directly after medical school (a "prelim" year) before you begin residency training in your specific field. This may occur at a different hospital from where you do the rest of your training.

At some point during your residency you must pass the USMLE Step 3 or COMLEX Level 3 in order to be state-certified for practice of medicine. USMLE Step 3 and COMLEX Level 3 cover clinical thinking and clinical management.

Consider fellowship training. Sub-specialty training (called fellowships) takes additional years to complete. Fellowship training refers to optional training beyond residency to become even more specialized within a field. For example, one may complete a residency in general internal medicine, and then pursue a fellowship in cardiology or gastroenterology. Fellowships typically range in length from 1 to 3 years.

Get board certified. Once you're doing with your residency, you have the option to take your final boards, where you will be a licensed doctor all on your own. With this test under your belt, you are free to practice medicine. Congratulations!

Obtain specialty certification, too. Medical doctors have the option to earn certification in the specialty of their interest from an accredited organization. Earning certification will demonstrate a candidate's knowledge and skills in a specific medical specialty, such as immunology, dermatology, neurological surgery or ophthalmology.

Part Five of Five:
Being Right for the Job

Be aware of the time and money commitment. Simply put, becoming a doctor is a ‘’lot’’ of work. It’s a decade of your life, after college, spent studying, not making money, and putting fun on the backburner. It’s hundreds of thousands of dollars spent that may or may not be easy to pay off. It’s hours of lost sleep you’ll never be able to make up and nights of wanting to find some relief; you’re so stressed. It’s work, and lots of it.

Realize that the road to becoming a physician is long, hard, and full of many obstacles. You'll work long hours, deal with difficult people, and your life during this process will practically revolve around your work. People's lives will depend on your commitment to the job and your ability to stay calm and make decisions under pressure.

Have a natural flair for the sciences. To succeed in this highly competitive, stressful field, you need natural intelligence, an accurate memory with instant recall under pressure, and an aptitude for science (and math) and for being analytical, loving to compare and contrast technicalities, and to organizing and distinguishing lists of symptoms. Everything will come much easier to you, if this naturally fascinates you. Otherwise, it's going to be a long, hard road.

Be good with people. Doctors aren't just clinicians and experts, who are fascinated by the chemical compound of medications and the processes of the body. They also are quite social creatures. If you want to be a good doctor, people skills and a good bedside manner, have to be in your repertoire, too.

What's more, a sincere drive to help others will keep you going when you want to burn out. The long, crazy hours will beat you down, but knowing you're helping others will keep you going.

Be energetic on little to no sleep.Doctors are notorious for working 50-60 hour work weeks, and sometimes they’re on call for 24-36 hours (especially during residency). Your schedule (again, especially when you are an intern) is not going to be a walk in the park. Relationships may suffer, and you will likely be constantly be worn out. If you can, muster enthusiasm for constantly learning.

Don’t do it for the money. It’s true that doctors make up a good portion of the careers that make a nice chunk o’ change. That being said, if you don’t enjoy it, you won’t last. You’ll have $150,000 in debt from school, no desire to work so hard, and wind up changing careers, wasting a near decade of your life. If being a doctor is your plan because you want to be financially secure, it’s best to find another route to a nice paycheck.

Know that being a doctor is not glamorous. Believe it or not, about ¼ of "being a doctor" is paperwork. ^[3] In many surveys of doctors, a lot of them would make different career decisions, if they could do it again.^[4] You likely won't get as much patient contact as you want and you'll be dealing with the admin side of things much more than you planned.

How to Become a Successful Engineer

Engineers make society function. They design our roads, our transit, our communications, our lives – you could say there’s an engineer behind everything in your life. Engineering can also be rewarding and pays well. It is, in fact, one of the best paying jobs out of college today. How to become one, though? To be successful in the field, you’ll need to prepare well for college, specialize in one of the many subfields, and work hard to land that coveted job.

If you want to become a doctor :

# Part One of Four:

1:Starting Your Career in School

Prepar early. You should try to get an early start if your goal is to be an engineer, during middle school and high school if you can. Engineers need a grounding in math and science, so plan your schedule around these subjects. Load up on the right classes and enroll in activities that will give you an edge when college admissions roll around.^[1]

Make sure to take basic math courses like Algebra I &II, Geometry, Trigonometry, Pre-Calculus, and Calculus. Take science courses like Chemistry, Biology, and Physics, too.^[2]
Take as many advanced placement or honors classes as possible in these subjects. Success in honors courses will help you get into the program of your choice in college, while preparing you for the work required of engineers.^[3]
Get involved in extracurricular activities, too. Go to a math or science camp in the summer, for example, or join the robotics club at your school. There are also regional, state, and nation-wide engineering competitions.^[4] Do anything that will give you a wider foundation.

2:Choose a good college

Most major universities have engineering programs. Demand is also fairly high, so you’ll probably be able to get a good job even without a degree from a top-tier school like Caltech or MIT. Still, there are factors to consider when applying.
Ideally, pick a school with a good reputation for engineering. All colleges are not created equal, and some programs are weaker than others. A degree from Western Michigan University is OK, but you’d do better at the more highly regarded University of Michigan or Michigan Tech.
Some colleges perform better in certain fields of engineering. Purdue and Michigan State University have excellent agricultural engineering programs, for instance, but are weaker in fields like civil and electrical engineering.^[5]
Engineers earn about $72,000 out of school, but you’ll still want to keep your tuition and debt as low as you can.^[6] A solid state school like Illinois Urbana-Champaign might be a better choice than an elite, pricy college like Stanford: $15,000 in-state costs vs. $46,000.
You might also look at location (i.e. are you willing to move away from home?) and which colleges offer internships and industry coops, which will give you early on-the-job experience.

3:Shoot for success in college.

Lust like high school, it’s important to get good marks in your coursework in college and to build up your resume with an eye to the future. Take the required coursework, see what sort of work suits you best, network, and get involved in extracurricular activities.
All the usual advice for school applies: attend lecture and lab, take notes, do your homework, set up a study routine, and apply yourself.Try to participate in engineering-related activities, like your university’s engineering club or math and science competitions. These experiences will help you to get experience working with teams and in informal leadership roles.
Consider taking a business class. Engineers don’t just need to be technically proficient, but also able to navigate business relationships with clients, lawyers, and regulatory officials. It may also help you network.^[8]
Keep busy all year round. If you want to be successful, you shouldn’t expect to spend the summers sitting around. Use them to get practical experience, either working or as an intern.

#Part two of Four

1:Picking a Field.

Choose a major. At some point, either before or during college, you’ll need to put thought into what KIND of engineer you want to be. There are dozens of fields and subfields in engineering, from aerospace and chemical to nuclear and mining. Each field offers different kinds of work and job possibilities.^[9]
Do your research. Be aware of the possible fields outside of the major areas of electronic, mechanical, civil, and chemical engineering.
You might want to think about what fields will be hiring. At the moment, it looks like renewal resources and energy have a bright future and will create lots of high-income jobs.
But the future can be unpredictable. Think also about what gets you excited. Do you like to write code in your spare time? Maybe computer engineering is a good choice for you. Like tinkering? You could be a great mechanical engineer.
Keep in mind that your field can affect where you eventually live and work. For instance, many chemical and petrochemical engineering jobs are near oil and natural gas deposits. As an aerospace engineer you might have to move to the major industry hubs in Texas or Florida.

2:Know the major engineering disciplines.

Engineering is split into four main fields or disciplines: civil, chemical, electrical, and mechanical. Each of these disciplines is split again into all sorts of subfields. In deciding on your major and field, take a close look at each of the four.
For example, civil engineers create the built environment of modern civilization, i.e. bridges, roads, airports, energy systems, etc. ^[11] They might also be involved in mining, transit, or traffic engineering, or in designing a better car door or more durable road surface.
Chemical engineers deal with materials and material processes – the production, transport, and transformation of materials. In this field you might work for the petro or energy industry or develop new processes to make polymers or drugs. Chemical engineers do much of their work in labs.^[12]
Mechanical engineers get products from idea to the marketplace. They use physics and math to understand all the forces that go into a product and its production and try to find the best way to build it and prevent failures.^[13]
Electrical engineers apply physics and the math of electricity, electronics, and electromagnetism to electrical systems and processes. They might design electrical components, build communications networks, or work for computer or utilities companies.

3:Remember other subfields, too!

There are countless subfields within the four big disciplines, as well. A chemical engineer can also be a paper engineer, for example, involved in the processes that turn raw materials into paper and ink. A mechanical engineer can be a marine or aerospace engineer, designing ships, planes, or spacecraft.^[15]
There are even subfields that “engineer” people. Industrial engineers study how people work, using modeling and time-studies to make processes more efficient and productive.

4:Get an internship.

One of the most important things you can do to cement your field in college is to complete an internship. One or more internships will look good to employers in the private sphere. They will also give you a first-hand taste of the field, letting you see whether or not it is really for you.

Start early. Internships are competitive. Visit your college’s career and internship center to find out about opportunities. Put together a resume and copies of your college transcripts for applications.
Think about your interests and possible locations. Are you willing to take an internship in an area outside of your ideal focus? Are you willing to move for the summer?
Cultivate relationships with professors. Network and get to know your instructors. Employers may ask for one or two professional references and you will need their support.
Let’s reiterate: internships in engineering are HUGE. In fact, one just might start your career. About 80% of employers see them as a source for full-time hires.

#Part Three of Four:

Getting an Engineering Job

1:Get your professional licensing.
Once you graduate from college with an engineering degree, the next step is to work toward professional certification. First, you should take the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam. This test is given by the National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying (NCEES) and gives you the right to present yourself as an engineer. A passing mark also lets you work as an independent consultant and can be an advantage on in the job hunt.^[17]
1. The FE is a computer-based exam tailored to your discipline. You should prep for the test, because it’s not easy: 116 multiple choice questions in an allotted time of 6 hours.
2. After you’ve passed the FE exam and worked in the field for four years, you’ll be eligible to take the professional engineering (PE) exam. Once you complete this step, you’ll be a certified professional engineer and can expect more trust and responsibility from clients.
4. 2:Start applying for jobs.

Even though engineers are in high demand, finding a job won’t necessarily be easy. Prepare yourself for the long-haul. Take the application process seriously, prepare, and tailor your materials to each job.^[18]

To find opportunities, search company websites and attend career fairs at your college. Apply to jobs in your field and any others you might be qualified for and enjoy.

Put thought into your resume. Tweak it to highlight your academic and personal strengths, software proficiencies, and concrete accomplishments. Make sure that the resume looks crisp, clean, and professional.

Polish your online presence. This means removing any damaging material from Facebook, Instagram, and other social media accounts while building up a positive presence. Create a LinkedIn account or perhaps even a slick, professional website.

Tailor applications to each job. Employers won’t waste time on a generic cover letter. Make sure to do your research. Know what the company does, what the job entails, and anticipate what they’re looking for – then, sell yourself as someone who fills that gap

3:Sail through the interviews.

- StayingCurrent in the Field

Get ready for a series of formal and informal talks and interviews before you get the job, both over the phone and in person. These interviews are your chance to sink or swim. If you prepare ahead of time, however, you are sure to have a higher rate of success.^[19]
Research and study before each interview. The interviewers will want to see that you understand what their company does and what the job requires. They are also looking for signs that you can fill the role.
Try to anticipate. Based on what you know about the job, what questions do you think that the interviewers will ask? Form answers to these beforehand.
Interviews can take a variety of shapes. It might be a question and answer session. Or, the interviewers could ask you to talk about situations: i.e., “Tell us about a time when others resisted a procedure you introduced. How did you respond? How did you gain support?” The latter is a popular method right now.
Another format is the case approach. Here, the interviewers will present a hypothetical problem and ask you to solve it, step-by-step.
A few companies use a “stress” test to gauge how you react to difficult situations. They will ask aggressive questions, interrupt, and change topic suddenly to judge how you handle it. The key is not to get rattled.

Always have follow-up questions, i.e. “What are your firm’s priorities for the next five years?” “What is the greatest challenge that you’re facing right now?” or “How do you measure success? Can you give me some examples?” This shows you have put thought into the company and interview.

#Part Four of Four:

2:Engage in professional development.

If you have an exceptionally innovative idea, you can apply for grants offered by organizations that support this kind of work – like those offered by the National Science Foundation.^[21]

Be aware of professional certification opportunities in your subfield, too. For instance, industrial engineers can take Lean Manufacturing Certification courses, which advise on how to limit waste in manufacturing processes and supply chains.^[22]

Staying current means practicing the science. Work on an idea you have outside of work or ask your boss if you can try something new in a project.

3:Publish.

Not all engineers need to publish scientific papers. But, you’re more thank welcome to try if you’re ambitious or just have an interesting and innovative idea. Write up your idea or case-study and submit it to an engineering magazine or scholarly journal.
Try titles like the International Journal of Engineering Science, the Journal of Engineering, or the International Journal for Plasticity.
Publishing your paper will usually mean a double-blind peer review. This means that the journal sends your paper out to one or more experts for feedback. You don’t know who they are, and they don’t know who you are.
Expect to wait. Peer-review and publishing can take as long as a year. You’ll probably have to revise the paper, even if it’s conditionally accepted (revise and resubmit). It will take several more months to appear in print, but it’s well worth the wait!
