Designed by architect G. Albert Lansburgh for vaudeville promoter Martin Beck, the theatre opened as the Martin Beck Theatre with a production of Madame Pompadour on November 11, 1924. It was the only theater in New York that was owned outright without a mortgage. It was designed to be the most opulent theater of its time, and has dressing rooms for 200 actors. The theatre has a seating capacity of 1,292 for plays and 1,282 for musicals.

Famous appearances include Basil Rathbone as Romeo to the Juliet of Katharine Cornell in December 1934; Frank Langella in Dracula; Elizabeth Taylor in The Little Foxes; Christina Applegate as the title role in Sweet Charity; David Hyde Pierce as Lt. Coffi in the musical Curtains; and Daniel Radcliffe in the upcoming revival of How To Succeed In Business Without Really Trying. .

On June 21, 2003, it was renamed the Al Hirschfeld Theatre in honor of the caricaturist famous for his drawings of Broadway celebrities, and reopened on November 23, 2003, with a revival of the musical Wonderful Town.
Nightmare: Superstitions – a fully immersive haunted house experience – provides a realistic sense of what it might actually feel like. The popular Halloween attraction is celebrating its seventh year spooking out New Yorkers, who make their way through a series of rooms in which they’re greeted by different characters.

Some of the stunts are over the top. Early on, a clown gives birth to a man in a diaper who uses his umbilical cord as a weapon. Another room contains a possessed woman in a church who appears to be having a seizure as she foams from the mouth in front of a stunned audience. It’s the more mild features, however, that elicit the most fear. In one room, attendees find themselves surrounded by a dozen priests in hooded robes. There’s no telling which ones are real until they make their presence known.

Unlike at Blood Manor – in which characters primarily interact using noises – the cast at this attraction has a story to tell. In most rooms, the audience members are presented with part of a scary narrative that only intensifies as they make their way towards the end. Often times, mirrors, strobe lights, and other optical illusions are used to skew perceptions.

It takes about 30 minutes to make your way through the attraction and groups of six to eight people typically enter together. Fear seekers should stick towards the front of the pack.

lombardi broadway

In engaging supporting cast helps us understand why Lombardi's players revered rather than feared a man who spent so much of his time (and theirs) screaming at them. As the play points out, Lombardi may never have actually said, "Winning isn't everything; it's the only thing," but through Kail's efforts to breathe fresh life into Lombardi's spirit, we understand why that credo came to define him.

Keith Nobbs is terrific playing a composite of the sports journalists who tried -- and failed -- to capture Lombardi's essence when he was alive, as are Bill Dawes (Paul Hornung), Robert Christopher Riley (Dave Robinson) and Chris Sullivan (Jim Taylor), as the talented players whose toil helped create the Lombardi legacy.

Judith Light has the play's most challenging role as Marie, Lombardi's loyal but long-suffering wife who bristles at living in both remote Green Bay and her husband's considerable shadow. Light's charming portrayal allows her to steal every scene she's in and provides much of the show's laughter.

Still, a play named "Lombardi" will rise or crash based on the man in the title role, and Dan Lauria is triumphant. It would be easy for him to go with a straight impersonation, but simply reciting Lombardi's Greatest Hits would've come off like a bad Springsteen tribute band.

Rather, Lauria inhabits Lombardi. He yells, yes, but he also forces us to understand Lombardi the way his players did, and we're invested enough so that, when the journalist tells us of the coach's death, the audience reaction is audible.

Even if you never cared about Lombardi, you'll enjoy "Lombardi." And that really is everything.
Mike Vaccaro, The Post's lead sports columnist, has covered 11 Super Bowls.
I rated this 5 stars because the overall CD is fun-a whole lotta fun.

Brian D'Arcy James as Shrek starts the show with the ironic "Big, Beautiful World" with his powerful voice but my only quibble with him would be that, with his spoken dialogue he sounds to be imitating Mike Myers. Sutton Foster as Fiona is a delight and she has one of those cartoony scenes with the heroine walking through a forest communing with the animals and in the cheerful song "Morning Person" and in the described but unsung antics, she channels her inner ogre.
Christopher Seiber as Lord Farquaad,a taller man in his own mind has two funny songs, "What's Up Duloc" and "The Ballad of Farquaad".
Daniel Breaker as Donkey has a tough act to follow in Eddie Murphy and I suppose you have to see his portrayal in person to fully appreciate his performance but he shares a duet with The Dragon where the dragon threatens to turn him into "Donkey Pot Pie".

Another number that scores is "I Know It's Today" where Princess Fiona along with Young Fiona and Teen Fiona each relate how their lives were shaped by stories they read in fairy tales.

Another funny song is "I Think I Got You Beat" where Shrek and Fiona compete with each other about how each of them had a worse life.

This CD is highly entertaining and enjoyable and can't wait to see the show and see the antics from both the story and the songs.

billy elliot broadway Show

Billy Elliot the Musical is a musical based on the 2000 film Billy Elliot. The music is by Sir Elton John, and book and lyrics are by Lee Hall, who wrote the film's screenplay. The plot revolves around motherless Billy, who trades boxing gloves for ballet shoes.
The story of his personal struggle and fulfillment are balanced against a counter-story of family and community strife caused by the UK miners' strike (1984–1985) in County Durham, in Northern England. The musical premiered in London's West End in 2005 and was nominated for nine Laurence Olivier Awards, winning four including Best New Musical. The musical's plot and story are based on William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet.

Set in New York City in the mid-1950s, the musical explores the rivalry between the Jets and the Sharks, two teenage street gangs of different ethnic backgrounds. The members of the Sharks from Puerto Rico are taunted by the Jets, a white working-class group.[1]. The young protagonist, Tony, one of the Jets, falls in love with Maria, the sister of Bernardo, the leader of the Sharks. The dark theme, sophisticated music, extended dance scenes, and focus on social problems marked a turning point in American musical theatre. Bernstein's score for the musical has become extremely popular; it includes "Something's Coming", "Maria", "America", "Somewhere", "Tonight", "Jet Song", "I Feel Pretty", "A Boy Like That", "One Hand, One Heart", "Gee, Officer Krupke" and "Cool".

The original 1957 Broadway production, directed and choreographed by Jerome Robbins and produced by Robert E. Griffith and Harold Prince, marked Stephen Sondheim's Broadway debut. It ran for 732 performances (a successful run for the time), before going on tour. The production received a Tony Award nomination for Best Musical in 1957, but the award went to Meredith Willson's The Music Man. It won a Tony Award in 1957 for Robbins' choreography. The show had an even longer-running London production, a number of revivals and international success. The production spawned an innovative, award-winning 1961 musical film of the same name, directed by Robert Wise and Robbins, and starring Natalie Wood, Richard Beymer, Rita Moreno, George Chakiris and Russ Tamblyn.
