Needless to say, it's clearly inspired from the Mitsubishi Lancer EVO X.

As you may remember, the Inspira is a rebadged Mitsubishi Lancer sedan and is the result of an OEM collaboration between the Malaysian automaker and Mitsubishi Japan.

However, we're not so sure if Mitsubishi had this in mind when it was signing the agreement with Proton.

In any case, the Jebat study, which could very well lead to a similar production model, features a wide body kit with blistered wheel arches and splashes of matte black paint all around the car.

Power is provided by a turbocharged 4-cylinder MiVEC engine producing 237HP (177kW) at 6,000 rpm and 343Nm of peak torque at 3,000 rpm.

No word if the pseudo-EVO (that does have a nice ring to it, doesn't it?) comes with the real EVOs four-wheel drive system, but Proton has announced that the Jebat completes the standard 0-100km/h (62mph) sprint in 5.6 seconds and tops out at 232 km/h or 144 mph.

Four of these robots were used in the production of the Kenari and the other 2 in the production of Kancil and they were decommissioned last year following the discontinuation of the two car models.“These robots were among those used in the production of a total 590,000 units of Kancils over 12 years and some 125,000 units of Kenari in 10 years.

“Worth some RM1.2 million when newly purchased, these robots have a new function now,” Perodua Managing Director, En Aminar Rashid Salleh said at the hand over ceremony held at the main UiTM campus.

A Civil Engineering graduate from UiTM himself, En Aminar Rashid said that these robots still have a lot of life in them and these machines would be instrumental in another nation building project: human capital development through practical learning.

“We believe that these robots still serve a major purpose as learning tools and with proper maintenance these robots have 30 years of life in them” he said.

Aminar added that some 1,500 students a year from the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, UiTM will benefit from the practical training of these robots.

In December last year, Perodua donated several such industry-grade robots to Universiti Malaysia Pahang for a similar purpose.

Other upcoming Corporate Responsibility programme by Perodua include the award of scholarships to 5 undergraduates in disciplines related to the automotive industry such as engineering, marketing, mass communications, accounting, business administration and others.

The value of the scholarships depending on the courses, is worth up to RM42,000 per candidate for the whole duration of the course. Advertisements on the offers will be out in the newspapers in due course.
Finally after a long wait full of anticipation speculation, the “mini Myvi” Kancil/Kelisa Replacement Model that used to be known as the Perodua D18D has been finally unveiled, and it’s name is Perodua Viva. This won’t come as much of a surprise to many people as the name had been leaked out for quite some time already, but now we get to know the Perodua Viva’s full specifications, details, features, clear non-spyshot photos as well as most importantly, how much it costs! More details after the jump.

The Perodua Viva is an A-segment car. What will make it a killer is it’s perceived Toyota DNA and the lack of any other viable choices in the A-segment. It seems most typical A-segment buyers have moved up to the B-segment, especially to the Perodua Myvi. Perodua’s A-segment offering is already more than a decade old and the standards of how big an A-segment car should be has pretty much changed. The Kancil has become too small for anyone other than the very poor.

Sales of the Kancil and Kelisa have dropped from the year 2003 onwards, declining steadily from about 100,000 a year in 2003 to only about 60,000 a year in 2006. With the introduction of the Perodua Viva, Perodua intends to change the market perception of it’s A-segment models from SMALL to COMPACT, from CHEAP to AFFORDABLE, and from INFERIOR QUALITY to HIGH QUALITY.
Perodua Viva Interior
Based on the previous generation Daihatsu Mira which has only just been replaced last year, it’s really no secret how the Viva looks like. It was shown at the KLIMS as the Perodua XX06 Concept fully undisguised for everyone to see, albeit having no doors. Inheriting Daihatsu’s K-car expertise, the Perodua Viva shares the Myvi’s space-efficient interior engineering. In terms of interior length, the Perodua Viva is actually longer than the Perodua Myvi, at 1845mm compared to the Perodua Myvi’s 1835mm. This interior length is class leading, with all competitors including it’s own Kancil and Kelisa models having interiors shorter than 1790mm.

As for interior width, it is 1300mm wide, compared to the Myvi’s 1400mm. It’s definitely wider than the Kelisa’s 1220mm and 1185mm. The Perodua Viva has a 149 liter boot capacity with the rear seats up, and this increases to 449 liters with the rear seats down.

It’s four doors open 90 degrees, an improvement over even the Perodua Myvi which has an 80 degree door opening angle, and a big improvement over the Kelisa’s 60 degree door opening angle. There are many storage compartments in the car, other than the usual glovebox, there is a tray located under the passenger seat.

Different Trim Levels

L-R: 660 and 850cc, 1000cc, 1000cc Premium

The Perodua Viva comes in four trim levels - 660cc, 850cc, 1000cc, and 1000cc premium. The Perodua Viva 660cc has trim level that is obviously for cost-saving reasons. Bumpers, door handles, and wing mirrors are material coloured - that usual grayish stuff that’s unpainted. Even the door trim has no fabric. The audio system is a radio and cassette player only, without an option for CD, and there are only front speakers. Wheels are 12 inch steel wheels. Seat covers are specified as “standard grade”, whatever that means. The side and front turn signals are amber lense units. There are no power windows.

The Perodua Viva 850cc takes it up one notch with the door handles and bumpers painted to the body colour, though the door is still without fabric. Wheels are still 12 inch steel wheels, but a full wheel cap is supplied. Power windows are available. Seat cover material is specified as “medium grade”. The audio system is equipped with a CD player and also 4-speakers. It also has powered windows, which means you can adjust it’s angle from within the car through button control, but it does not have a retracting feature. Both the 660cc and 850cc have no power steering!

The Perodua Viva 1000cc adds some nifty features like the under-seat tray, headlamp buzzer warning (in case you leave your car with your headlamp on), seat height adjuster, and most importantly the power steering. The wheels are still steel wheels with full wheel cap covers, but are 13 inch in size. Side and front turn signals are of the clear lens type. The premium version has the usual creature comforts such as electrically retractable side mirrors, a first for a Perodua car. Even the premium Myvi does not have this feature. Other premium feature are the height-adjustable driver’s seat and the vanity mirror on the sun visor.

Of course, the features that are a must for any premium line version of a local car are ABS and dual SRS airbags, available only on the 1000cc Premium trim of the Perodua Viva. The 1000cc Premium has what Perodua calls “High Grade” seats, while the 1000cc standard uses the same medium grade seats as the 850cc.

Other than the different engines, other technical specs you should take note of is the suspension system. All Perodua Viva cars use McPherson struts are the front and a torsion beam setup at the rear, but the 1000cc models have an additional stabilizer bar in front.

Perodua Viva Engines

Powering the Perodua Viva is a range of three engines, which all come with DVVT Variable Valve Timing. Yes, DVVT even for the 660cc and 850cc models. The 660cc EF-VE engine is a high revver, with peak power of 47 horsepower coming in at a high 7,200rpm. The engine readline is an astronomical 8,000rpm (look at the photo of the meter panel below), numbers usually associated with performance cars, but is actually quite typical of small displacement K-car engines. Peak torque of 58Nm arrives at 4,400rpm.

The 850cc engine option is the ED-VE, making slightly higher horsepower than the 660cc at 52 horsepower, however it is achieved at a lower 6,000rpm. Peak torque is also higher and arrives earlier in the rev range - 76Nm at 4,000rpm. The biggest displacement engine is the EJ-VE which we are all familiar with since the Myvi 1.0 liter - 60 horsepower at 6,000rpm and 90Nm of torque achieved at a low 3,600rpm. All cars come with a 5-speed manual gearbox, but the 1000cc models have 4-speed automatic gearboxes.

Here is a table with the claimed fuel consumption figures of the Perodua Viva compared to it’s competitors:

Finally, what everyone’s been waiting for. How much does the Perodua Viva cost?

Perodua Viva Prices

Perodua Viva 660cc MT Solid: RM28,400
Perodua Viva 660cc MT Metallic: RM28,800
Perodua Viva 850cc MT Solid: RM32,500
Perodua Viva 850cc MT Metallic: RM32,900
Perodua Viva 1000cc MT Solid: RM36,800
Perodua Viva 1000cc MT Metallic: RM37,200
Perodua Viva 1000cc AT Solid: RM39,800
Perodua Viva 1000cc AT Metallic: RM40,200
Perodua Viva 1000cc Premium MT Solid: RM40,800
Perodua Viva 1000cc Premium MT Metallic: RM41,200
Perodua Viva 1000cc Premium AT Solid: RM43,800
Perodua Viva 1000cc Premium AT Metallic: RM44,200

The baseline Viva is about 6k more expensive than the cheapest Perodua Kancil 660EX Manual with solid colour. However perhaps this price is justified considering you get alot more interior space as well as a much more modern engine - the Kancil only has a carburetted engine making 31 horsepower. Besides, Perodua has decided to keep the Kancil in production, which means the Viva is technically a Kelisa Replacement Model. If you’re on an ultra-low budget, the Kancil is still the car for you I suppose.

The Perodua Viva comes with a 3 year manufacturer warranty.

When a company makes an effort to announces monthly sales figures, you can be certain that things are going very very well. From 32.1% in Jan 2010, the company's market share inched upwards to 32.5% in Feb 2010.

Year-on-year from Feb 2009, the company registered a 6.5% increase in sales volume from 12,200 units to 13,000 units. Even though the company recorded a market share increase from Jan 2010, the actual number of sales actually went down from 16,200 units sold.

“We performed exceptionally well despite the many challenges that include a shorter working month and very tight stock levels. We even exceeded our target of 12,700 units for February,” Perodua managing director En Aminar Rashid Salleh said today.

“It’s a great start for the year, where we surpassed our car sales targets for both January and February. I believe that this is mainly due to the pent up demand, as consumers’ confidence improved on the back of the economic recovery,” he pointed out.

The Myvi continues to be Perodua's top seller with 4,900 units finding homes during the month. The other models, Viva and Alza, recorded 4,500 and 3,600 sales respectively. March is set to be another strong month as the company picked up some 15,000 bookings in February.

“Perodua will ramp up production in March and April to reduce the waiting period especially for the Alza,” En Aminar said.

Earlier this year, Perodua announced its target to sell 176,000 cars for 2010, up from 167,700 sold in 2009. On after sales, Perodua recorded 124,000 service intakes in February or 9% improvement over the 114,000 intakes in February 2009.

“Not withstanding any unforeseen circumstances, we are on the road to meeting our first quarter vehicle sales target of 44,400 units,” quipped Aminar.

Those who signed up for the Perodua D18D (Perodua Viva)’s Looking For Love web teaser should have received an email by now with a teaser image of it’s headlamps. From what I can see, although the Perodua Viva is based on the a previous generation Daihatsu Mira, Perodua has facelifted it’s styling to mirror the latest model Daihatsu Mira recently launched in Japan.
I personally got Glittering Silver as my colour, though in reality for a car like the Viva I’d prefer a more fun colour. What colour did you get?
You can book this now but delivery will only start in March 2010.

You basically get a new bodykit which consists of front, rear and side skirts and a different rear spoiler. On the inside, you get leather seat covers for all the seats, but the leather treatment does not continue onto the door trim. Also provided is a 5 inch touchscreen LCD which has a Windows CE-based GPS navigation system with a SiRF Atlas IV chipset and 500MHz CPU. The LCD also displays a feed from a 150 degree lense reverse camera.

The Alza Advanced Version manual goes for RM66,490 for solid and RM66,990 for metallic, while the Alza Advanced Version automatic goes for RM69,490 for solid and RM69,990 for metallic. The S. Metallic option is missing because the Alza Advanced Version only comes in three colours – Ivory White, Ebony Black and Classy Purple, while the only special metallic colour is Pearl White.
I reckon you could probably get a good Garmin nuvi for under RM1,000 and add on a very good set of tint for about RM2,000 to RM3,000 or so maximum. If you don’t want the leather seat covers and bodykit you’re better off adding your own tint and GPS. Not sure about the cost of the reverse camera though.

The 12 teams will race in their modified Perodua ViVa 1,000cc automatic or manual transmission with 1 litre of Petronas Primax 95 petrol.

“The objective of the race is to challenge the institutions’ engineering prowess and innovation. We are highly supportive of the Ministry of Higher Education’s (MOHE) move in producing more creative and innovative local graduates,” Perodua managing director En Aminar Rashid Salleh said.
“The Perodua Eco-Challenge is also part of Perodua’s corporate responsibility programme and we also want to highlight the benefits of fuel saving technologies,” he said.

“We invited 27 institutions of higher learning which offer automotive engineering course or have automotive programme. The 12 were chosen based on "innovativeness" of modification ideas and their relevance to fuel saving,” En Aminar said.
The participating institutions are Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM), Universiti Tekonologi Mara (UiTM), Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM), Universiti Malaysia Pahang, Universiti Tenaga Nasional (Uniten) and Universiti Teknologi Petronas (UTP).

The others are Universiti Tun Hussein Onn Malaysia (UTHM), Universiti Industri Selangor (Unisel), Universiti Kuala Lumpur Malaysia France Institute (UniKL MFI), Politeknik Ungku Omar (PUO), Politeknik Sultan Azlan Shah (PSAS) and Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (Unimas).

The winners will be decided by the longest distance their modified car travelled with the 1 litre of fuel. In the second category, points will be awarded based on the extent of modification done, design and students participation.

On another note, En Aminar said Perodua maintained its market leadership in May 2010 with sales of 15,000 units of cars and an estimated market share of 29.6% on the back of the continued strong demand for vehicles.

“The 15,000 units sold were13.6% higher than the 13,200 units achieved in May 2009,” he said.

Year-to-date, Perodua sold 78,700 units of cars which was 5.64% more than the 74,500 units forecast for the 5 months this year. This was also a 23.16% jump over the 63,900 units sold during January-May 2009.

Perodua forecast to sell 176,000 units of cars for 2010, up from the 166,700 units recorded last year.

“We are very encouraged by our sales numbers and we believe that the run up to the second half would be better in view of the anticipated demand during Hari Raya Aidil Fitril and Deepavali,” En Aminar said.

Car sales in Malaysia have traditionally picked up in the third quarter, he pointed out.

Reviewing Perodua after sales performance, En Aminar said May saw 137,000 service intake compared with the forecast of 130,000 intake. For the first 5 months 2010, total intake amounted to 681,000 or 46% market share compared with 666,000 intake achieved during January-May 2009.

We will first begin by listing a glossary of commonly used terms in the wheel industry. The objective of this glossary will be for the average tuner to easily understand terms that wheel experts use on a daily basis. I will add to this glossary every month along with tech articles which refer to a consumers selection process of a wheel.

Bead Seat
The Bead Seat is the area of a rim where the tire will be sealed to prevent air leakage.

Often times a wheel can have a slotted or knurled bead to reduce slippage in high performance applications such as rally racing.

Cast Wheels (One Piece)
A cast wheel is made by pouring molten aluminum ingot into a mold; the metal then takes the mold's shape as it cools and hardens. There are several types of casting methods which include low pressure/gravity, counter pressure, and high counter pressure molding (HCM); each method has its place in today's market. A wheel manufacturer will select a particular method according to the weight, strength and finish that they have specified for that design.

The benefit of casting wheels is the relative low cost for set up and manufacturing. However cast wheels are typically heavier and less robust compared to a wheel manufactured using a forging method.

Forged One-piece Wheels
A forged wheel is made by forming a wheel under extreme high pressure. The material used is an aluminum billet—a solid piece of dense aluminum. A forging press, a huge machine that exerts thousands of tons of pressure on the metal, basically presses or rolls the billet into its fundamental form. This forging is then machined to final finish. This process allows wheels to be built with much less material, allowing for lighter weight and unique designs, because the process creates a much stronger wheel than other methods.

Many premium wheels are made using forging technology.

Multi-piece Wheels
The processes mentioned above can be combined to produce a wheel of a particular strength and weight. For example, some wheels have a cast aluminum center, welded to a steel outer. Another type of two-piece construction features a billet center welded to a rolled outer (extruded aluminum rolled into a hoop). Still other wheels feature a split outer so that widths and offsets can be made to custom specifications. This last method is the three-piece type construction. In this type of wheel, the center which can be cast, billet or forged, is usually attached to the outer assembly by special screws or rivets.

Bridge
The bridge of a wheel is the portion of the wheel between the spokes.

Disk
The disk of a wheel can be also referred to as the face of a wheel. This is the portion of a wheel that is most visible when installed on a vehicle. The disk is composed of spokes, mounting surface, and lug holes.

Rim
This rim of a wheel is the “barrel” of a wheel that is the first point of contact from road forces from the tire during driving.

Size
The size of a wheel is determined by the diameter and width of a wheel. The diameter of a wheel is measured from the inside flange of a wheel. The width of a wheels is measured again from the inside part of the flange of a wheel on each side.

Wheel size is measured in inches. For example – 18x10 means that a wheel is 18inches in diameter and 10inches in width.

Rim Flange
Rim Flange is the portion of a wheel where the disk meets the rim.

Offset
Wheel offset is the way for a wheel manufacturer to determine how a wheel is placed on the car’s wheel well in relation to the suspension components and fenders. By taking into consideration the width and diameter of a wheel, a wheel technician can utilize offset to determine fitment. The offset indicates the distance from the center of the rim to the mounting point of the wheel to the car. Offset is measured in millimeters. A positive offset is indicated when the mounting surface extends beyond the central line of the rim and a negative offset results when the mounting surface falls within.

Basically a positive offset means that the rim will go further towards the suspension and a lower offset means that the rim will go further towards the fenders. Make sure to check with your wheel tech to make sure you are using the proper offset when matching up wheels for your car.

P.C.D.
P.C.D. (Pitch Circle Diameter) This is also referred to as “Bolt Pattern” – Cars will have a designated number of mounting bolts which car vary from 3 to 8 bolts to mount the wheel to the car. Each bolt will be spaced in a circle diameter accordingly to car manufacturer’s specification. This is usually measured in millimeters or sometimes in inches.

For example – “ 5-114.3 “ will mean that the vehicle has 5 bolts which are spaced 114.3 millimeters apart in diameter.

Again make sure you know the P.C.D. of your vehicle to determine which wheel will work with your car.

Center Bore
Center bore of a wheel is the measurement (in millimeters) of the diameter of the hole opening in the center of the wheel which is placed on the hub of the vehicle.

A center bore of a wheel is usually oversized to accept different vehicle applications. A hubcentric ring is then used to make the wheel hubcentric.

Hubcentric Ring
This is used to make a wheel hubcentric to a car where the centerbore of a wheel matches the pilot bore of a car.

This is an important condition to eliminate potential vibration and to ensure a perfect exact fit.

Hub
The hub of a car is a section that protrudes out of the mounting surface for the wheel of a vehicle. The measurement of the hub can also be referred to as the pilot bore.

Valve Stem
The Valve Stem is a valve that is used to maintain air pressure of the tire. Usually mounted on the rim section of the wheel, a valve stem is necessary to inflate a tire to the rim.

Pad Height / Disk Height
Depending on the wheel manufacturer, the Disk or a Pad height is determined to satisfy brake caliper overhang clearance. Although each manufacturer determines their own Disk / Pad heights, they will specify certain heights to specify brake caliper clearance with notations such as High Pad/ Disk, Mid Pad / Disk, and Low Pad / Disk. A High Pad or Disk is for cars with larger oem calipers or for applications that will use upgraded big brake systems.

As a rule of thumb when comparing 2 wheels of a same size and offset, a High Pad wheel will have a smaller rim depth (lip size) since the mounting surface is raised to clear brakes. A low disk will have a larger lip size since the mounting surface is shorter, which then allows the lip size to be lengthened. Low disk is usually for the rear of cars which have small brake calipers.

Chrome
This is a popular finish on wheels which resembles a bright mirrorlike finish. A wheel is stripped to its bare metal and different layers of metals are applied to the wheel which is then finished off with a nickel layer, which creates the shiny finish. A chrome wheel is usually heavier and can be weaker than a painted wheel due to the addition of metal and depending on the stripping process, acid may be used which will affect the surface of a wheel.

Rotating Weight
During the driving of a vehicle, there is a pressure that is applied to the tires and wheels of the vehicle. This is called the Gyroscope effect. Especially during high performance driving conditions - acceleration, turning, and braking is all effected by these rotating forces. Reducing weight while retaining superior strength results in success in hi-performance driving.

Unsprung Weight
The weight from the Suspension apparatus which includes the Tire and Wheel combination is called “Unsprung Weight”, and reducing the weight of this section is crucial to the performance of the vehicle. If 1kg of weight is saved from the suspension system, the value of a 15kg weight loss from the vehicle’s overall weight can be saved. This means if an aluminum wheel which is 1kg lighter than a stock steel wheel is installed, 60kg of total of body weight can be saved.

jwl
Many may have noticed a marking on wheels with a visible logo “jwl”. Japanese wheels must have a "jwl" logo on the wheel and "jwl" (Japan Light Wheel Alloy) is a compilation of standards defined by the Japanese Government to ensure the vehicle's safety for aluminum road wheels. Every wheel put to market must be tested to meet jwl standards before a wheel can be put out to market in Japan. These standards are generally accepted worldwide as acceptable for most road conditions. That is why you will see these marks on European and other Asian country wheels.

Cornering Fatigue Test (Drum Endurance Test)
The purpose of this test is for checking wheel rim strength and durability. Place a wheel assembly with tire on test equipment. Radial stress is then added to simulate vehicle weight.

Test run 500,000 cycles
After 500,000 cycles inspect for cracks, deformation and any nut loosening.

Radial Load Fatigue Test (Rotary Bending Test)
jwl pass criteria: 100,000 cycles
The purpose of this test is for checking durability of the wheel disc. The spokes and the hub are the first point of weight distribution from the vehicle and spoke strength is gauged by this test.

Place a wheel on testing equipment and by adding bending stress to center of disc –

Test run 100,000 cycles
After 100,000 cycles, inspect for cracks, deformation and any nut loosening.

13 Degree Impact Test
jwl pass criteria: 594 kg

The main purpose of test is for checking strength between rim and disc cross section. The “joint” or the area where the spoke and the rim meet is an important structural area that is subject to great stress. The horizontal weight of the rim and the vertical stress of the spokes meet at this joint and proper structural stability is crucial for a proper wheel.

The wheel assembly is placed with tire tilted 13 degrees from horizontal plane on testing equipment.

A preset weight is dropped on the outer sidewall of tire, thus giving impact to the wheel/tire. Then inspect for cracks, deformation and air leak.

This test is very important for the recent trend of a larger/wider wheel with lower profile tire combination, because there is less air volume than OE wheel/tire and more stress to inner rim section. This test simulates actual usage condition such as hitting corner curb or objects from side.

VIA (Vehicle Inspection Association)
Third party organization (In Japan) that enforces the jwl standards. They make sure that companies are adhering to governmental standards.

Shot Blasting
Some higher end wheel manufacturers will shot blast or shot peen a wheel in preparation for the finishing treatment. The Shot-blasting process involves thousands of tiny industrial grade ball bearings pounding the wheel in a controlled environment to further harden the surface of the material. This helps to lock in surface toughness and is also used in many other automotive and industrial applications.

Plus Sizing
Plus sizing is installing a wheel with a larger diameter with a lower profiled tire to match the size of the stock vehicle wheel and tire combination. The increase in size of wheels and tires is the best way to improve both performance and appearance of the vehicle. However, it is important to maintain the overall diameter of the tire because it is possible to change odometer and speed meter readings and adversely affect handling. By using a low-profile tire, quickness in steering response and better lateral stability is gained. At the same time, the car becomes visually impressive.

Stainless Lip
Some wheel manufacturers will utilize stainless lips for their one piece and multi piece design wheels. This allows a lip to have a very high luster without having to machine, polish or chrome the lip of a wheel. Often times, a stainless lip will be removable in case of curb damage instead of having to repair or replace a wheel.

Lug Nut
A nut that is used to fasten the wheel to the hub of a vehicle. Usually hexagonal in design, lug nuts are offered in a variety of sizes, shapes, and patterns to work with different cars and wheels. Make sure to check with the wheel and vehicle manufacturer to make sure which lug nut and wheel combo will work best for a desired application.

Popular Lug nut materials:

Steel: Mostly used for oem applications. You will mostly see chrome, zinc plated, or painted finishes in today’s market.
Aluminum: Used for aftermarket applications or racing applications. Cost is much higher than Steel lugs. You will see mostly painted or anodized finishes. Aluminum alloy nuts are light weight and reduce rotating mass and unsprung weight. However, due to aluminum’s inherent softness compared to Steel, make sure to re-torque aluminum lugs from time to time.
Chrome Vanadium: Used for aftermarket applications. Cost is similar to aluminum lugs. Chrome vanadium is a material found in several automotive applications such as engine valve springs. Although heavier than aluminum, chrome vanadium lugs are very hard and durable. A good compromise between aluminum and steel.
Titanium: Used for high end aftermarket applications. Most expensive lugs you can buy. Light weight and tough, titanium lugs can be found in high end aftermarket applications for exotic cars.
Japanese Car Lug Nut Thread Pitch Guide:
12 x 1.25 Thread Pitch –
Nissan, Infiniti, Subaru

12 x 1.5 Thread Pitch –
Toyota, Lexus, Honda, Mazda, Mitsubishi.

Wheel Lock
A type of lug nut that is used to prevent theft of a wheel. A wheel lock will feature a pattern that is not normally used on typical lug nuts.

Popular Wheel Manufacturing Materials:
Steel: Generally used on lower cost oem vehicles (and nascar!) , Steel wheels are a typically not very complex in shape.

Aluminum: The most common material used in alloy wheels in the world. Aluminum exhibits desirable characteristics such as relative light weight, malleability, resistance to corrosion and cost. Please note that different grades of aluminum are used in wheels of different manufacturing processed. For example, forged wheels will use higher grade aluminum such as 6061 aluminum due to its high tensile strength and purity.

Magnesium: Used primarily for high end wheels and racing applications, magnesium alloy wheels exhibit superior light weight characteristics and up to par strength characteristics. Only premium wheel manufacturers with high technical backgrounds are able to manufacture magnesium wheels due to its difficulty in processing and its reaction to extreme heat.

Other manufacturing materials: Carbon and Titanium materials are being researched to use for wheel applications in the pursuit of lightness and strength.

Terms Used in Wheel Design:
5 Spoke – A classic approach to a wheel. Often viewed to the eye as both Racy and Elegant, the 5 spoke design, although less efficient than other designs in terms of strength and lightness still remain as the most popular wheel design base for aftermarket wheels.

Mesh – A design pioneered by European Wheel manufacturers, the mesh design incorporates multiple spokes that intersect each other at various points to offer high strength and durability properties.

Fin – A design used in many touring car applications. A fin design is usually referenced to a wheel that features more than 12 thin spokes. The idea of a fin design is to reduce weight without sacrificing strength by distributing road forces and weight through multiple thin distribution points.

Dish – A design element that incorporates small, short spokes with a large full center disk. Often used for larger sedans. Not very efficient in weight, but high on elegance.

Since its humble beginnings, it has grown over the years to be a major force in the local automotive industry. In 2006, Perodua for the first time ever took the No. 1 position in the local automobile industry. This is of no surprise on the back of their successful Perodua Myvi launch and consistent performance. With both Myvi and Viva remaining as the top 2 best selling models since June to September this year, Perodua managed to strengthen its position with market share of more than 34% up to September this year. There are many reasons for their success and among them, are their single minded focus on the ‘A’ segment and their highly established technical partner, Daihatsu. The production capacity of their plant in Rawang has been increased to 250,000 units per annum to cope with demand from both the local and export markets. In addition to being focused, Perodua had time and time again delivered to customers value for money with good after sales services.Perodua Viva the company’s 7th model, is a cleverly designed car introduced as the replacement model to the Kelisa. Launched in May this year, it has since become the 2nd best selling model, after Myvi.

Three months after its introduction, it was awarded the Best Car award in the supermini category by Autocar Asean 2007.In slightly more than 4 months, there are currently about 30,000 units of Viva on the road, making it the fastest growing model in term of sales volume. We at Fleet-asia.com certainly do not underestimate Viva despite its compact body size. Viva is an exceptionally practical car especially in the urban areas. It is suitable for all regardless of the nature of their jobs, even those in the sales line will like its compact size which makes handling and more importantly, parking a breeze. It is a friendly car even in term of its ownership cost. Viva is one of the most affordable cars in the market, with reasonable maintenance cost and economical fuel consumption, all of which are big consideration for any fleet owners. It is ideal for the busy sales promoters who run around town daily. In fact, many construction companies and even the ‘boys in blue’ use it as a convenient means of transportation besides the obvious driving schools and car rental companies; amongst others. The Viva is a fun car to drive and is loaded with many practical features. The Perodua Viva, in many ways is the answer to the basic transportation needs for people living in the suburbs. The exterior of the Viva is a major positive shift from that of the Kelisa and Kancil. It has resemblance to the very popular Myvi in many ways. Its design is in tune with the current market taste and preference. The very pronounced headlights combined with the dominant front bumper, gives it a sturdy presence. In the rear, the vertical mounted rear lights adds in more ways than one to the decent rear and helps it to be easily visible even in dark surroundings.

The slanted windshield and sloping hood gives the side profile its elegant look. The interior is simple yet practical. The dashboard that houses the T-shaped instrument panel blends with the overall greyish colour scheme which complements the interior trim. It comes with a 3-spoke steering wheel while the instrument cluster houses two dials which has bold lettering that offer good legibility even at night. Also available is the more advance digital odometer/trip meter and digital fuel indicator. Our test drive unit of the Viva was the 850 EX variant which is powered by the 850cc 3 cylinder 12 valves DOHC, DVVT engine. The power plant is rated 39kW at 6000rpm and the maximum torque of 76Nm at 4000rpm. While driving around town, we reached 100 km/h at 3500rpm and 110 km/h at 3900rpm which clearly shows its characteristics of being quite economical in the fuel consumption area.

The transmission is the five-speed manual that performed very well. The ride and comfort offered is definitely one of the better ones we experienced in a car in this category. An important observation is the reasonably high seating position especially the driver’s seat that provides good all round visibility and therefore better driving experience.More refinement is in place for occupants. Viva comes with comfortable fabric seats. The easily reached switches provide lots of convenience; wing mirrors are easily adjustable and all windows can be controlled by the switches on the driver’s door. In addition, cup holders are also available for the front and rear passengers. The ICE, is a radio/CD player with front and rear door speakers. The leg room provided is ample while the cargo space is 146 litres which can be easily expanded to 449 litres once the rear seats are folded. The colours available are Ivory White (solid), Glittering Silver, Passion Red and Tropical Green, Sapphire Blue and Ebony Black (metallic).

On-the-road price including insurance in Peninsular Malaysia is RM32,500 (solid) and RM32,900 (metallic). On top of the 3-year manufacturer’s warranty, Perodua Viva comes with another 3 years extended warranty. The free service is offered at the first 1,000km, 5,000km and 10,000km. Perodua also believes in giving the best to customers when they send their cars for servicing at authorized outlets.

The engine oil used is Semi-Synthetic Engine Oil – Perodua 5W-30.In terms of nationwide presence, to date, there are 154 Perodua service centres. The extensive service network ensures that fleet owners are able to maintain their cars with much convenience. In making service one of their key priorities, a special ‘1 Hour Superservis’ campaign was launched earlier this year which is another example of the company’s commitment to its customers.Perodua also has a list of 19 insurers in their panel to assist you in insuring your cars.Perodua also has a dedicated fleet sales department which offers specialist services including special price for fleet sales, priority allocation, after sales/spare parts support and they will also provide the necessary product knowledge training to ensure that the car is well-maintained.

He also revealed that a new 1.5 liter variant of the Myvi is in the works. This makes sense since they are already making the transverse-install front wheel drive 1.5 liter 3SZ-VE engine for the Alza, why not put it in the Myvi?
Apparently the new Myvi will have a new look. It’s actually about time for the Myvi to be refreshed, so Perodua is pretty much on schedule for a typical 5 year lifecycle with a facelift in the middle. The Myvi was launched in May 2005 and after 5 years, time for a replacement in the first half of 2011. If you remember, in mid-February we saw the Myvi’s Japanese cousin refreshed with a new look. Frankly, I don’t expect the Myvi to look 100% like that model as with each new rebadge product, Perodua has been moving away further and further from the JDM model’s exterior and interior.
I feel Toyota/Daihatsu has been slowly moving their JDM models to target specific niche markets with very tailor-made products. They have so many little cars based on the same platform over there in Japan, and from the marketing material of the new Passo/Boon, it’s quite obvious that the car is now targeted towards young ladies. In Malaysia, the Myvi is a unisex mass market car, so I’m expecting both exterior and interior styling to differ significantly in the details, while generally keeping the same shape.
Look at the related link below to find out more about the new Passo.

It felt like suddenly my freedom has been taken away; and there is this bubble inside of me wanting to burst and be free.

Meeting with an accident, having a huge dent on the right back passenger's door and major scratches on the right side of the car left me without a vehicle for about two weeks. Luckily, my cousin (who is also the elder sister I never had) came to the rescue and loaned me a car (bless her soul!). It is a Perodua Viva (better than nothing!), used by her maid, for running errands. And coincidently she is not around for 10 days (falls nicely in the picture).

Having driven a normal sedan and a 4 WD before, now temporarily driving a compact car, Viva nonetheless, left me with an almost nerve-wracking experience. The first time I drove the car on the highway, I became very agitated. I lost the sense of security which I always have whenever I drive my own car. I can't help feeling insecure whenever I am in the car as the body of the entire car seems hollow. The door seems easily dented. I felt that I am separated by only 2 sheets of soft metal from the sorrounding that includes larger vehicles like busses, lorries and not to mention other bigger cars when I am on the road. The car is not even equipped with airbags, when I am used to the comforting thoughts of having the dual airbags feature of my car. It was indeed a vulnerable feeling.

I also felt that that Malaysian drivers, especially those driving bigger cars, generally have near zero tolerance towards the smaller cars. Driving my own car, whenever I signaled to change lanes, others would make way and show on-road manners. However, when signaling in a Viva, I was ignored. Nobody bothered to give way or showed any courtesy on the road.

Viva's 650CC engine capacity also made me feel that the car is slow, therefore taking a longer time to reach the same destination compared to driving my own car.

I wonder why the car is made such that it lacks security features. I wonder why do people even buy the car? As a secondary car is perhaps OK but not as the main car. Price is indeed the main determining factor but why must the safety features be compromised? During my student days in the US, I knew a fellow student with a part-time job who could afford to purchase a brand new car, a Hyundai at USD 6,500. Here, is Malaysia a mere Viva cost RM 25,000. Comparing 1:1, it is indeed sad to note that we have to pay so much more for our basic neccessity. Yes, a car is a necessity in Malaysia, no more a luxury! I can't help but wonder if it is our system that made it such.

Driving the Viva for the past 3 days left me with a humbling experience. It makes me realised that if I am in need, there are others whose plights are worse than me. I am only temporarily inconvenienced and will get my car back soon. The damage on my car is covered by the insurance, not that I have to fork out money to pay for it.

It has to be, because sales records are tumbling everywhere, from Audi to Perodua. Malaysia’s automotive market leader held a press conference earlier today where Perodua’s Managing Director Aminar Rashid Salleh completed his 100 days at the helm by announcing new records achieved over the past quarter.

In March 2010, Perodua sold close to 18,500 units, breaking its previous record of 17,050 cars set in July 2008. Last month’s bumper figures contributed to Perodua’s first quarter 2010 total sales of 47,751 units, which represent a 24.5% jump from the same period last year. From the Q1 total, the Myvi was Perodua’s top seller at just over 18,000 units. The smaller Viva trailed by less than 1,000 units while the Alza did 12,640 units. The latter has chalked up 27,000 bookings since its November 2009 launch.

En. Aminar expects the second quarter of the year to be better than the first. “We will be happy to maintain our market share of 31.1% in tandem with the forecasted TIV of 550,000 announced by the Malaysian Automotive Association recently,” he said.

On successfully defending the top spot from Proton, Aminar said that Perodua never set out to be number one and is “blessed to be where it is now”. He also had this to say: “Perodua is not here to compete with Proton; we complement each other. We (Perodua and Proton) have about 100 common vendors and we’re working to improve their standard,” revealing that Perodua and Daihatsu sent selected vendors to Japan for training and will continue to do so even after the official Japan-Malaysia agreement to develop local vendor capability expires next year. The chief used kita tak boleh jadi juara kampung sahaja (we can’t be champions on home soil only) to stress the need for local vendors to meet international standards.

At the media briefing, Perodua was also keen to highlight the growing number of owners bringing in their cars to official service centres. March saw 148,000 cars, which is another personal best for the company. Aminar attributes this to a better customer database (collected from the rear seat belt fitting exercise) and more affordable service menus.

2009 proved to be a good year for Perodua too, despite the market being extremely tough for most of the year. Well, to make things simple it was a car wash charity project.

Normal car wash fees would cost RM2 but on this particular day we would ask the customer whether they would like to make a donation of extra RM3 and we will have our members to help wash their car. Considering that now you have extra "few" pairs of hands along with those originally working in the car wash station, RM3 should represents value for money as we are able to get their car cleaner than the normal days with less workforce, thus RM2 fees.

They still get their car wash though, in case they decide against making the donation and opt for the original price. At the end of the day it was job well done with quite a lot of customer did actually agreed to pay extra which is not the main point I noticed on that day. It was the "class" of customer who are willing to give the donation that interest me most. Considering that middle class family would own a national made car (Proton or Perodua in Malaysia), they are actually the bunch which are more willing to make the donations as compare to those higher class which owned a foreign car like the Honda Accord, Toyota Camry and so on.

Now I know owning a foreign car doesn't mean they are rich, but let just make that assumption for now that they are more wealthier than the others considering they have the ability to own more expensive foreign cars.

Not just majority of them does not agree to give the donations, but they don't even bother to lower their car window for us to have our chance explaining to them about the charity project, pretending to not notice us waiting just beside his precious car.

And surprisingly, age and races make no differences! From early twenties to "looks like my granny", from Chinese to Malay, they are all behaving just the same, most of them. Just when you think that is the ugly side of being financially wealthy, brace yourself for the worst! We were asking one of the "better" class customer about the donations for the charity fund, this guy happens to turn to his wife/girlfriend and ask whether they should make the contribution.

The prompt reply was... "What! an extra RM3!! I can have a bowl Hokkien Mee (local Chinese food) with that kind of money". So our day have since change after that, as from eagerly wishing more wealthier family with foreign cars would come by and make the contribution, to cursing our luck when another one of them arriving.
I actually would like to give the benefit of a doubt and compiles a list of few "good and kind" reasons why would these seemingly more wealthier family are more reluctant to become charitable. Here's what I can think of...

* They got rich just recently
* The newer wealth had to take times to feel itself out. Most probably still pinching their own face making sure *They are not dreaming. Which also includes the suddenly rich but not limited to - are taking their time digesting their new status and moving towards greater generosity.
* They don't feel rich
* Most of them would fall into this category as nobody will say they have enough money! Cost of living that never stops increases maybe another reason as they don't feel secure about their financial status. Well, think about families that have to share only one car, or rely on public transport 80% of the time, riding motorcycles as alternative, I'm sure at least one of them have made contribution to our charity project
* They just made a significant contribution to charity recently
* That seems very reasonable for not giving an extra RM3 of donations. Or they are able to get a receipt and have tax reduction for the other contribution?
* They don't bother and never give donation, "just give me my car wash"
* Perhaps its because we sent an ordinary looking guy to give the explanation of the charity project.

Should have better luck with a hot chick or handsome dude next time
Still, I think the main talking point is at what RM3 can do for them. For a family capable of driving the kind of car, arguing what value they can get out of RM3, for example food, its a big lousy lame excuse for not giving donations.

We fully understand its their money and their rights not to give donations, but at least have the guts to tell people straight about it. Everybody can refuse to not contribute, citing the value they are giving no matter its 3 million, 3 hundred or 30 cents. 10 cents can buy you 2 sweets in Malaysia, does that give you a perfect reason to not give donation even it is just 10 cents we are asking for?

The amount of money you have doesn't matter, a charitable and kind heart does!

The Perodua Rusa is a microvan manufactured by Malaysian automaker Perodua, and based on the Daihatsu Zebra and Daihatsu Hijet Maxx. Launched on March 6, 1996, with a 1.3 litre engine, followed by the 1.6 litre range on May 14, 1997, the Rusa is the first van to be produced by a Malaysian automotive company.

Three variations of Rusa vans are offered: The CX (1.3 litre, two seat version), the EX (1.3 litre, five seat version) and the GX (1.6 litre, seven seat version). The CX is primarily intended to serve as a freight vehicle, while the EX and GX are intended for private use. The van is also used by Malaysian police and fire fighting forces.

The vehicle's name "Rusa" is a Malay translation of "Deer". Later replaced by the Perodua logo, the van's original logo was a galloping deer.

Until the end of September, the Perodua Kelisa Ex, Britain’s most affordable new car to own and run, is now even better value for money. At just £4499* delivered, Perodua have slashed £200 off the usual price of their lead-in model, once again passing savings back to their customers without compromising on any of the fundamentals required by the discerning modern motorist.

The Kelisa Ex boasts a comprehensive range of safety features fitted as standard, such as driver and passenger airbags, side impact protection and seat belt pretensioners. Along with its five door versatility and practical storage space, these features make the Kelisa Ex the perfect choice for young families on a budget, who need an inexpensive car with low running costs and a spacious interior but are not prepared to cut corners when it comes to passenger protection. Young families and the more green-aware amongst us will also appreciate the low running costs of the Perodua Kelisa Ex;, at only 15.1p per mile¹ (over 60,000/ 3 years) and with class-leading fuel consumption of 64.2mpg**, the Kelisa Ex is still one of the most fuel efficient cars on the road today, whilst the environmentally friendly 1.0 litre engine also takes advantage of a low rate of vehicle excise duty.
Not only is the Kelisa Ex equipped to a high level of sophistication for an entry level model, boasting useful features such as power steering and an advanced engine immobiliser, but this Malaysian supermini looks great too, with free metallic paint available on the Ex model worth a further £200.
Perodua UK’s Managing Director, Tim Slaughter, says: "We are committed to providing motorists with the best value for money, along with the highest levels of build quality".

The company purchased RM3 billion worth of parts in 2008 and 2009. More than 130 local vendors and suppliers will benefit from this development, revealed Perodua chairman, Tan Sri Asmat Kamaludin. “We are projecting sales of 176,000 units this year from 166,700 units in 2009,” he said.

Bernama reports that the Rawang based company has invested RM97 million on facilities for R&D and more than RM1.5 billion on model development over the past 13 years. It added that Perodua’s strategic partnership with Daihatsu has allowed the local firm to tap into the “technologically advanced facilities and manpower expertise of Daihatsu”.

Perodua also has plans to expand across ASEAN. “Thailand offers huge opportunity while we plan to increase current exports to Singapore and Brunei,” Asmat said. Besides those nations, other export markets include United Kingdom, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Mauritius and Fiji. Perodua also exported components worth RM27.3 million to Japan, Indonesia and Pakistan last year.

At the same press conference held in conjunction with the visit of Deputy International Trade and Industry Minister, Datuk Mukhriz Tun Mahathir to its plant, MD of Perodua, Aminar Rashid Salleh was quoted as saying that “the Myvi will undergo a facelift this year”. Another facelift? The current Myvi was refreshed back in August 2008, three years after Perodua launched the car in Malaysia. Perhaps the boss was trying to mean a “new Myvi” based on the second-generation Toyota Passo that made its domestic debut last month? That seems more likely, but we’ll see!

Perodua Chairman Tan Sri Asmat Kamaludin said the increase in purchase of local parts is also in line with Perodua's projections of higher sales this year.

"We are projecting sales of 176,000 units of cars this year from 166,700 units in 2009," Asmat said during during a press conference in conjunction with the visit of Deputy International Trade and Industry Minister, Datuk Mukhriz Tun Mahathir, to Perodua's plant here today.

The increased purchase of parts and components would be for the Myvi, ViVa and the recently launched Alza which have between 80 and 90 per cent local content.

"More than 130 local vendors and suppliers will benefit from Perodua's decision to increase its production," Asmat said.
Perodua has been promoting the growth and improvement of local vendors through its vendor development and improvement programmes.

The company has invested some RM97 million on facilities alone for its Research and Development (R&D) and more than RM1.5 billion on model development in the past 13 years.

"This underlies Perodua's strong commitment to the localisation policy and in-house development capabilities as well as the government's aspiration to see local companies enhance their R&D expertise," Asmat said.

Perodua's strategic partnership with Daihatsu Motor Co Ltd (DMC) has allowed the company to tap into the technologically advanced facilities and manpower expertise of DMC.

Perodua is also exploring the possibility of expanding its market with focus on Asean countries. "Thailand offers huge opportunity while we plan to increase current exports to Singapore and Brunei," Asmat said.

Perodua currently exports some 2,000 units of vehicles to several countries among which are the United Kingdom, Singapore, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Mauritius, Fiji and Brunei.

Last year the company also exported components worth RM27.3 million to Japan, Indonesia and Pakistan.

It has exported RM85 million worth of components since 2003.
Meanwhile, Managing Director of Perodua, Aminar Rashid Salleh said with the support of the government, manufacturers, Perodua and vendors themselves, more local vendors can meet global standards to be prominent global players.

"There is still room for improvement among local vendors in terms of quality and standards," Aminar said at the press conference.

Aminar said with Perodua's focus on quality, productivity and cost, there is strong response even for older versions such as its Myvi which was launched five years ago.

"The Myvi will undergo a facelift this year. On a monthly basis, we receive 8,000 to 9,000 orders. The Myvi is phenomenal for us. Every year the number of orders are increasing. Last year, 91,000 Myvi were sold," he said.

As for the recently launched Alza, a multi purpose vehicle, there has been tremendous interest as well.

"We have received 23,000 units of orders since the launch and up to last month, 10,000 units were delivered," he said.
As for the ViVa, an average of 6,000 units are sold monthly. -- Bernama

Perodua outgoing managing director Datuk Syed Abdull Hafiz Syed Abu Bakar said MPVs now account for about 10 per cent of the total industry volume (TIV).

A consumer study done by Perodua prior to the Alza introduction indicated that there was potential for the MPV segment to make up 30 per cent of the TIV, Syed Abdull Hafiz said.

This indirectly means that the Alza will soon control about two thirds of the segment now dominated by Proton Exora, Toyota Avanza and Nissan Grand Livina.

The local TIV stood at about 548,000 units in 2008, and Perodua expects the figure to ease by about five per cent to some 520,000 this year before rising to 530,000 units in 2010.

The company says it will be able to sell some 164,000 units this year for a share of 31.5 per cent of the overall market.

Next year, Perodua's sales are targeted to swell to 176,000 units - the highest in its 15-year history - fuelled by the Alza. This should give it a 33.5 per cent share assuming the TIV stands at 530,000 in 2010.

Syed Abdull Hafiz expects the Alza, launched by Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin yesterday, to rake in monthly sales of 4,000 units next year.

For December this year, about 3,500 units are expected to be sold as Perodua slowly increases production. Accordingly, the company expects to only deliver a few hundred units of the Alza this month.

Since bookings were opened on November 13, Perodua received orders for about 3,500 units of the 1.5-litre MPV.

"The Myvi had received bookings of about 6,000 units but that was for 40 days. In Alza's case, it was 3,500 units in 10 days. We are quite happy with the response so far," Syed Abdull Hafiz said.

The Alza, which in Spanish is "to rise", is available in six variants.

Prices range from RM56,000 to RM64,000 for the four standard and premium variants. The two advanced variants will cost between RM67,000 and RM70,000 each but only available from March next year.
