10 Free Xbox Games You Should Try (Free DLC)

Microsoft's planning a number of free-to-play games for Xbox Live, possibly including a free-to-play Fable MMO from the bods at Lionhead. Ubisoft's Josh Mast reckons the business model will "hit it big" on next generation consoles, as third party publishers follow the manufacturer's lead.

But why wait for tomorrow, when you can download a bunch of free stuff from Live today? There's some reasonable entertainment to be had without laying down a penny, thanks in large part to Kinect Fun Labs and the mercenary activities of a certain junk food manufacturer. If you're more interested in add ons, consider our free Xbox DLC round-up.

1. Harm's Way

A startlingly high-polish, pleasantly aggressive kart racer from the Doritos brand (lately the cause of some upset of the woe-unto-games-journalism variety). There's a twist, and it's this: if you'd rather not race, you might take command of the turrets around each course and do your best to make life difficult for the drivers. Spawning track power-ups are available to both drivers and turret commanders, which makes for an engaging back-and-forth, and there's lots of playful randomness to be had in the shape of destructible track furniture and dynamic weather conditions (e.g. sandstorms). A genuine surprise.

2. Happy Wars

The first true free-to-play title on Xbox Live Arcade, a moderately entertaining class-based MOBA (multiplayer online battle arena) for up to 30 players a match. The basics are just that, swiftly degenerating into mashsville, but there's a respectable amount to customise for both cosmetic and tactical advantage, and the maps are fat, gaudy platters of fortifications and siege weapons. Additional gear and the like can be bought at the in-game store and the developer will remind you of this relentlessly, but from what we've played/heard, Happy Wars steers clear of "pay to win" territory. The aesthetic is rather charming, almost as though somebody had weaponised the cast of Disney's "It's a small world" attraction.

3. Air Band

So devoid of imagination that you can't actually picture the thing you're pretending to play, for the amusement and instruction of loved ones? Get ahold of Air Band, a Kinect Fun Labs sim which recognises musical gestures and teleports in an appropriate instrument. Well, most of the time. Our efforts to conjure up a harpsichord haven't met with great success.

4. TotemBall

"The Ptolmec tribe needs your help", lazy good-for-nothings that they are. In particular, they need you to "guide Pterry the Pturtle through his jungle home", using your Xbox Live Vision camera to "navigate across islands, over bridges, and through ancient ruins". Don't have an Xbox Live Vision camera? Guess you won't be helping no caricatured aborigines, then. There's a fun collection element which layers up the soundtrack as you add tribesmen to your rolling stack - the soundtrack itself isn't particularly listenable, however. In short: it's a cheap, cheerful, peripheral-exclusive and motion-guided platformer that probably won't make your arms fall off immediately, like certain Kinect games, but probably isn't worth even the incredibly low price of an obsolete gaming peripheral. TotemBall doesn't work with Kinect, bizarrely.

5. Doritos Crash Course

For a game that owes its existence to somebody's burning desire to sell crisps, this is rather a hoot - 15 levels of platformer "mayhem" starring your very own Xbox Live Avatar, who must contend with both a selection of gladiatorial hazards and the leaderboards. There's splitscreen support, the controls are sharp and the branding is thankfully low-key.

6. Aegis Wing (US only)

A side-scrolling space blaster for up to four players, offering ugly but diverting 3D backdrops and an actual orchestral score. Triple-A confirmed? It's not a patch on the likes of Sine Mora, but if you arethinking of buying Sine Mora in light of Log's ravings, but you're not sure the prospect of weaving through bullet patterns really appeals, consider this a useful reintroduction to the schmup in general. Shame the weapon effects aren't a bit sparkier.

7. Mars Rover Landing

A celebratory Kinect effort in which you use gestures to steer a probe through the Red Planet's atmosphere - the more precise the gestures, the better condition your rover will be in when it lands, though you'll get a "well done" either way. This one's definitely more of a novelty than a game, but perhaps there's a kid in your household who dreams of becoming an astronaut. Incidentally, Kinect latency makes a lot more sense when there's a million, million miles of interplanetary void to account for, doesn't it? Look, here's somebody who's related to somebody who was in space to demonstrate the thing.

8. Kinect Party

A wonderful mini-game compilation from Double Fine, which shows how much Kinect has to offer given considerate design (pro tip: just say "hey television" to bring up the menu), an emphasis on having fun rather than winning, and a reluctance to just transplant ideas from genres that grew up on controllers. The free base download comes with five "channels" - you'll need to pay for the rest, but what's here is worth the non-price of admission alone.

9. Battle Stuff

Step 1: hold nearby household object in front of Kinect. Step 2: force virtual representation of household object to smash one of its brethren around using Kinect commands, while a crowd of domestic paraphernalia bays for blood. Step 3: realise inner comic potential, swap household object for your own, engorged genitalia. Step 4: invite friends to see the results. Step 5: look for new friends.

10. Hexic HD

This comes pre-installed on most Xbox 360s, but perhaps you've deleted your copy. It's an easy to pick up, hard to master match-3 puzzler - group hexagons into clusters of three or more to clear them away. Arrange tiles to form a flower shape, and you'll reap additional bonuses when they evaporate. Good, clean fun.

Bonus game: Fable 3

This one's free for a limited time only, as part of Microsoft's E3 celebrations. It's probably the least loved of the Fables, but don't let that stop you picking up one of this generation's better, more ambitious action RPGs.

The adventure game from Peter Molynuex (as former head of developer Lionhead Studios) is available to download free of charge via the Xbox Live Marketplace.

This kicks off a new XBL Gold subscriber promotion in 2013, for which Microsoft will offer two free Xbox 360 games to Gold subscribers each month for the rest of the year.

While Microsoft has held off announcing a full line-up titles to be offered, it has confirmed that the promotion will include popular titles such as Halo 3 and Assassin's Creed 2.

Games downloaded as part of this promotion are added to users' permanent games collection "no matter what", confirmed Microsoft.

Xbox Live Silver members cannot take advantage of this and are charged 3600 Microsoft Points for the game.

All you have to do is select "use Microsoft Points" when asked how you'd like to pay. The cost is 0 Microsoft Points and when you "confirm" the deal, the game is yours.

Xbox's E3 Keynote: What You Need To Know

LOS ANGELES — Xbox kicked off its E3 keynote Monday with a trailer for Konami’s Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain for Xbox One. At an event Microsoft promised to be full of games, the company delivered, showing off a substantial number of new titles not only for its newest console, the Xbox One, but also for its now 8-year-old Xbox 360.

The company also announced the console will be available in November for $499.

Xbox 360

Microsoft may have a shiny new console, but that doesn’t mean Xbox 360 is headed anywhere –- yet. Microsoft announced an updated look for the 360 resembling its new brother, the Xbox One.

The updated Xbox 360 will be available starting Monday.

It’s not just the console that's getting an upgrade. Starting July 1, Xbox Live Gold members, both new and existing, will receive two free game downloads per month. In addition to its existing titles, Microsoft will add a number of new titles into the mix, including Assassin’s Creed 2 andHalo 3.

A number of new titles are also on the way, including World of Tanks, Max: The Curse of Brotherhood, Dark Soul II, Splinter Cell Blacklist and Grand Theft Auto 5.

Xbox One

Microsoft announced 13 titles that we will only see on Xbox One.

“Welcome to the new generation of games,” said Microsoft's Corporate VP Phil Spencer before kicking off a showcase of titles for the console ranging from the high-speed hit Forza Motorspot 5to Dead Rising 3.

Here's a rundown of what we can expect:

Forza Motorsport 5

Forza Motorspot 5 learns how you drive the car, ultimately allowing it to compete for you — even when you’re not actually in front of the game. For instance, while you’re at work, it can earn credits for you along the way.

Minecraft

Already an Xbox fan favorite, Minecraft is headed to Xbox One.

Project Spark

Using Xbox SmartGlass (see below), Project Spark lets you create your own work environment to play in. Everything in Project Spark can be changed, boasting an infinite number of ways to play and build.

Battlefield 4

After some slight technical delays, we saw a real-time demo of the highly anticipated Battlefield 4at 60fps.

How To Get 1 Free Year of Xbox Live!

Things you will need: Secondary xbox live account
Step 1: You must have an xbox live account with a newly redeemed 12 month subscription. This may work with 3 months but I haven't tried.
Step 2: Go to support.xbox.com
Step 3: Start a chat with an agent.
Step 4: Tell the agent that you accidentally redeemed your subscription on the wrong account and would like it to be removed.
Note: Sometimes they may ask for the code
Step 5: If they cancel the membership they will contact you via email with the new code. They will most likely send a 12 month.
Step 6: If they do ask them to split it into (4) 3 months. (Stay in the chat) They will send you four different codes.
They will tell you not to use the new 12 month code because it will be flagged.
Step 7: Redeem that 12 month code on another account and request another new code because you redeemed on the wrong account.
Step 8: Enjoy your extra year of xbox live.

Assassin's Creed 3 Free on Xbox Live

At the moment, Xbox Live users in China are getting a free copy of Assassin's Creed 3. Here's how to pretend to be a Chinese dude in Beijing:

NOTE: You must create a new email. Chrome is recommended for translation purposes.

1. Go to hotmail.com and create a new live.com email address. Go through the process normally but use China as your country. For the zip code, use 100600.

2. Go HERE.

3. Attempt to purchase it and sign in and create your xbox live account. Use any address, but I used 100600 as the zip code and Shanghai as the province.

4. It will redirect you back to the page. PURCHASE IT AGAIN.

5. Recover profile to your console and download. This will take 7.6 GB of space. Enjoy!
