In light of Australia's terrible performance, Geoff Lawson questions the job of assistant coach Daniel Vettori.

In light of Australia's terrible performance, Geoff Lawson questions the job of assistant coach Daniel Vettori.

After the team's dismal performance in the first two Tests against India, Australian legend Geoff Lawson questioned assistant coach Daniel Vettori's position.

Australian extraordinary Geoff Lawson attacked aide mentor Daniel Vettori for the travelers' sad exhibitions in the continuous Line Gavaskar Prize against India. Lawson faulted previous elite spinner Vettori for not giving a lot of contribution to spinners on how they ought to bowl in Indian circumstances.

"The one who's likely not copping however much he ought to is Daniel Vettori, who is one of the extraordinary left-arm universal bowlers on the planet, yet he ought to exhort on how we will bowl and how we will play against that kind of bowling," Lawson said on SEN Radio.

"He appears to have gotten away from a touch of consideration here since when I see shots of the changing area I think, 'What's Vettori's contribution here, he's the one who was an extraordinary sluggish ball'. He ought to maybe be having more contribution than most."

Lawson guaranteed that the Australian bowlers had no system for breaking the organization between lower-request India players Axar Patel and Ashwin, which assisted the hosts with acquiring a mental benefit over the guests in the subsequent Test.

In the principal Test, Axar scored 84 and Jadeja 70, while the last option crushed 74 in the subsequent Test and partook in a productive organization with Ashwin (34) to step up to the plate away from Cummins' side.

"At the point when Axar Patel (is) having an organization with (Ravi) Ashwin (in the subsequent Test), we don't know how we are approaching separating them, those several organizations have cost us two Test matches," added Lawson.

With the Limit Gavaskar Prize actually held, India will expect to win the third Test in Indore beginning Walk 1 to meet all necessities for the World Test Title last.

The third Limit Gavaskar Prize Test among India and Australia will be played from Walk 1-5 at Holkar Field in Indore, followed by the fourth and last game from Walk 9-13 at Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.

India beat Bangladesh by 8 wickets to win 6th title

2016-03-08T03:26:00.001+05:30

Sabbir Rahman is the Man of the Series. He has scored 176 runs at a strike rate of 123 in five innings – the second-highest run-scorer.

Shikhar Dhawan gets Man the Match award for 60 runs.

India maintained their unbeaten run in the tournament to beat hosts Bangladesh by 8 wickets. It was a clinical performance by the Indian team. Shikhar Dhawan stepped up in the Final to shrug off his bad form and led India to the 6th Asia Cup title. Virat Kohli was once again instrumental in stabilising the innings. Then came MS Dhoni to finish off the match in a jiffy.

BRIEF SCORES

Bangladesh: 120 for 5 in 15 overs. (Mahmudullah 33 not out, Sabbir Rahman 32 not out, Shakib Al Hasan 21; Jasprit Bumrah 1/13, Ravichandran Ashwin 1/14, Ravindra Jadeja 1/25).

India: 122 for 2 in 13.5- overs. (Shikhar Dhawan 60, Virat Kohli 41 not out, MS Dhoni 20 not out; Al-Amin 1/30, Taskin Ahmed 1/14).

India Beat England By 7 Wicket

2013-01-21T01:01:00.001+05:30

MS Dhoni gave his city a perfect international debut. He won the toss, put England in, India restricted the visitors to 155 and Ranchi’s favourite son played a ferocious pull shot for four runs to take India to across the finish line. Thanks to this thumping seven-wicket win, India took a 2-1 lead in the five-ODI series.

The win, however, was set up by the bowlers’ disciplined performance. And later, a trademark – solid yet aggressive, sensible yet authoritative – knock from Virat Kohli (77 off 79 balls) ensured India got home with 131 balls to spare.

India’s chase began with a déjà vu for Ajinkya Rahane – a fast, full and straight delivery from Steven Finn, a hesitant stride forward by the right-hander, a huge gap between bat and pad and the sound of timber. Rahane was out for a duck and India lost their first wicket at 11.

Gautam Gambhir tried to hit out of his lean patch with a wild swing to a wide, short ball. Fortunately, he missed it and bought himself some more time at the wicket. The resistance, however, ended when a heave over mid-on resulted in him holing out and India losing their second wicket. Gambhir scored 33 off 53 balls.

Meanwhile, Virat Kohli began his innings by smashing Jade Dernbach for three consecutive fours. When on 49, Virat reached 4,000 ODI runs and he celebrated the feat with a half-century in 58 balls. Virat had a perfect partner in Yuvraj Singh. The left-hander scored a quick fire 30 off 21 balls (6x4), before James Tredwell bowled him out.

With 12 runs to win, MS Dhoni walked in to bat to a rousing welcome from his home crowd. The Indian captain started out with a thumping straight drive that ran to the fence despite hitting the stumps at the non-striker’s end and finished with a pull shot to take India home.

Earlier, Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Shami Ahmed made the England openers work hard for their runs against the new ball. After persistent tight bowling for eight overs, India got their first breakthrough in form of Alastair Cook (17). Cramped for runs, Cook was lured into an across-the-line shot off Ahmed only to be caught plumb in front of the wicket.

Ian Bell (25) and Kevin Pietersen (17) put on 44 runs for the second wicket. While Bell looked a bit uncomfortable, with a strike-rate of 58, Pietersen was quite fluent. The calm in the England innings was short-lived as India dismissed both set batsmen in successive overs.

After going for 10 runs in his first over, Ishant Sharma got a respite in his next, as he deceived the dangerous looking Pietersen with a short ball. Then, Bhuvneshwar came back in the 16th over to put Bell out of his misery with an incoming delivery. Bell played the cut and MS Dhoni took his second successive catch. Like he did in the second ODI in Kochi, Dhoni had Bhuvneshwar bowl his 10 overs on the trot. He finished with 1/40.

Joe Root and Eoin Morgan tried to forge a partnership, but the innings was jolted significantly with the Indian spinners’ triple strike in two overs. Morgan tried to reverse sweep a leg-side ball from R Ashwin only to present a simple catch to Yuvraj Singh at backward point. New batsman, Craig Kieswetter, was clean bowled by Jadeja. The last ball of the same over, another arm ball, saw the back of Samit Patel. England were reduced to 98/6 half way through their innings.

Root looked solid for most part of his 57-ball stay at the wicket, but began to lose patience. He eventually gave in to indiscretion at 39; when poking at a wide delivery from Ishant, he gave Dhoni his third catch of the match.

The very next over, 38th of the innings, Ashwin produced a classical off-spinning delivery to get rid of Bresnan. India bowlers once again struck in pair, leaving England reeling at 145/8 after 38 overs. Ashwin’s (2/37) quota finished in the 40th over and Dhoni brought Suresh Raina into the attack. The part-time left-arm spinner responded with Steven Finn’s wicket

Jadeja finished England’s innings by bowling Jade Dernbach out with a straighter one. His bowling figures read 6.2-0-19-3. England were bundled out for 155 in 42.2 overs.

Brief Scores: India 157/3 (Virat Kohli 77; James Tredwell 2/29) beat England 155 all-out (Joe Root 39; Ravindra Jadeja 3/19) by 7 wickets with 131 balls to spare.

Man of the Match: Virat Kohli for his match-winning knock of 77 runs off 79 balls with nine 4s and two 6s.

Srilanka Beat Pakistan By 2 Wkt In 5Th ODI

2012-06-18T23:21:00.001+05:30

Colombo: Jun 18, 2012
Angelo Mathews stroked an unbeaten 76 balls 80 to guide Sri Lanka to a two wicket victory over Pakistan with two balls to spare in the fifth and the final One Day International played at R. Premadasa stadium in Colombo.

Sri Lanka won the series 3-1 after they sensationally clinched the fifth ODI. One game of the series was washed out.

Pakistan were looking to win this game and level the series.

Earlier, Imran Farhat and Umar Akmal struck half-centuries to guide Pakistan to 247.

Sri Lankan bowlers picked up wickets at regular intervals to keep a check on the scoring rate of Pakistan and deny them from constructing any substantial partnership.

Azhar Ali, Asad Shafiq and Misbah-ul-Haq got off to a good start but couldn’t convert them into substantially big scores. All three of them got out while batting in their 30’s.

Nuwan Kulasekara and Jeevan mendis picked up two wickets each.

Pakistan captain Misbah-ul-Haq had won the toss and had elected to bat first.

Pakistan came into the match with two changes as Younis Khan and Saeed Ajmal made way for Imran Farhat and Mohammed Sami. Meanwhile, Sri Lanka dropped the left arm spinner Sajeewa Weerakoon and included Jeevan Mendis in their line-up

Brief Scores: Pakistan 247 for 7 in 50 overs ( Imran Farhat 56, Umar Akmal 55*; Jeevan Mendis 2 for 30, Nuwan Kulasekara 2 for 53) lost to Sri Lanka 248 for 8 (Angelo Mathews 80*, Dinesh Chandimal 54; Sohail Tanvir 3 for 42, Mohammad Hafeez 1 for 30) by 2 wickets

Sri Lanka beat Pakistan by 44 runs In 4Th ODI

2012-06-18T00:49:00.000+05:30

Pakistan suffered yet another batting collapse in the fourth ODI as they went down to Sri Lanka by 44 runs at R Premadasa Stadium, Colombo on Saturday.
At one stage Pakistan were in a strong position at 166-2 but a middle order collapse, thanks to Thisara Perera hat-trick, meant Sri Lanka now lead in the five-match series 2-1 after the visitors were bundled out for 199 in 45 overs.

Opting to bat first Sri Lanka scored 243-8 with Kumar Sangakkara top-scoring with a 130-ball 97 while off-spinners Mohammad Hafeez and Saeed Ajmal, and paceman Sohail Tanvir each bagged two wickets for Pakistan in the day-night match.

In reply, even the efforts from Azhar Ali (81 not out) and skipper Misbah-ul-Haq (57), who enjoyed a 113-run stand for third wicket, couldn't help Pakistan from the embarrassment.

Pakistan won the opening one-dayer by six wickets and Sri Lanka won the second game by 76 runs in Pallekele, while the third match was abandoned due to rain in Colombo on Wednesday. The fifth one-dayer will be played in Colombo on Monday.

Michael Clarke: we need to continue to raise the bar

2012-06-14T23:55:00.000+05:30

Test and one-day cricket captain Michael Clarke is demanding his limited-overs team lift and says the tour of England and Ireland represents the start of a two-year campaign to make Australia the top nation in all three forms of the game.

Australia head the one-day ratings, but are third in the Test standings and fifth in the Twenty20 format.

The Test team has improved markedly under Clarke's leadership and he is seeking similar gains in the one-day arena, especially away from home.

"We've been the number one one-day team in the world now for a while now but we need to continue to raise the bar," Clarke said at Sydney Airport on Thursday.

"I think our cricket of late in the shorter form hasn't been as consistent as we would like.

"I think once we get on a plane today, it's probably the start of a two-year journey for this Australian team - whether it be the one-day team, the Test team, one-day team or the Twenty20 team - to have a lot of success and get back to being the number one team in all three forms of the game."

Australia will play two English county teams and a limited-overs international against Ireland before facing fourth-ranked England in five one-day internationals.

Clarke said he was surprised to hear explosive England batsman Kevin Pietersen had retired from one-day cricket.

"I'm thrilled I don't have to play against him in one-day cricket because he's such a good player and he's had a lot of success and he's a match winner," Clarke said.

"But England have a lot of good players in their team. They enjoy the shorter form of the game. They've got some good talent coming through.

Clarke predicted Ian Bell, Pietersen's replacement at the top of the order, would do well and nominated the bowling unit as England's greatest strength.

"We are certainly going to have to be at our best in those conditions to beat them," Clarke said.

While he has six specialist pacemen at his disposal, Clarke ruled out a rotation policy.

He suggested the recalled Mitchell Johnson and fellow veteran Brett Lee would perform a mentoring role towards highly-rated young speedsters Patrick Cummins and James Pattinson.

"Mitch's experience in the UK and also in the shorter form of the games will help the likes of James and Pat. I think he and Brett Lee can play a big role with their experience," Clarke said.

Clarke said Michael Hussey's unavailability offered an opportunity to George Bailey, Steve Smith and Peter Forrest, but nominated David Hussey to fill his elder brother's role of innings closer and pacer of run chases.

Pakistan Vs Sri Lanka 3rd Odi Match Abandoned Due To Rain

2012-06-14T01:22:00.000+05:30

Only 6.2 overs of play in the third ODI between Sri Lanka and Pakistan at the R Premadasa Stadium, leaving the series level at 1-1.

There were early warning signs that the match could be a stop-start affair as a brief shower forced the groundstaff to bring on the covers soon after the toss. The rain relented and the match began on time, but only one ball was bowled after which the showers returned to hold up play for 75 minutes.

When the cricket resumed, Lasith Malinga and Nuwan Kulasekara got the ball to jag around to test Pakistan's batsmen. Mohammad Hafeez perished in the first over, nibbling at a swinging delivery from Malinga to edge to the keeper. Kulasekara's inswing caused more problems, and several close calls, before Azhar Ali was adjudged lbw in the sixth over though the ball looked to have struck him outside off.

Only two more balls were bowled before the umpires decided to halt play as ominous clouds threatened an extended break. The covers were on even before the rain began, but it hardly let up through the rest of the day. The groundstaff took off the covers several times, but the rain didn't stay away long enough for a resumption.

There had been plenty of debate before this match over whether Pakistan needed to play an extra batsman, and it was settled as Pakistan chose to bring in a specialist batsman, Asad Shafiq, in place of fast bowler Rahat Ali. There wasn't enough play, however, to test the soundness of the strategy. There also wasn't enough play for 34-year-old left-arm-spinner Sajeewa Weerakoon, making his debut seven years after his first national call-up, to either bat or bowl.

BCCI Tech Committee recommends Revamp in Ranji format

2012-06-13T05:00:00.001+05:30

Mumbai: The BCCI's technical committee, headed by former India captain Sourav Ganguly, on Tuesday called for a major revamp of the Ranji Trophy by recommending the doing away with of the earlier Elite and Plate Divisions and making it a 27-team tournament.
The Committee, which met in Mumbai for over two hours, recommended an overhaul of the elite domestic event, which has been struggling for relevance. The BCCI's Working Committee will now study the recommendations and decide on whether to implement them or not.
According to the new format, the 27 teams will be divided into three groups of nine teams each and each team will play eight matches in the league stage. In the previous format, Elite Division was divided into two groups of eight teams (A) and seven teams (B). The Plate Division was divided into two groups (A and B) consisting of six teams each.
"We have recommended two major changes in Ranji Trophy format. There will be nine teams in three groups A, B and C. Each team will play eight matches in the league stage and there will be promotion and relegation," Ganguly told reporters after the meeting.
"The changes will make the competition even and each team will play a few more matches. But all these are recommendations and the BCCI Working Committee will take the final decision," he added.
The new format brings parity in the number of matches that the teams will play against each other in the league stage. Earlier, in the Plate Division, a side could play five matches at the preliminary level.
The top three from group B at the end of the season would be promoted to group A, while the bottom three from the latter group would be relegated to group B. The last two from group B would go down further to group C, from where the top two would be promoted to group B.
Besides, the Committee decided to make the quarter-finals and the semi-finals of the tournament five-day affairs instead of the four-day matches that were played till this season. Top three teams each from group A and B and top two teams from group C will play in the quarterfinals. The final will remain a five-day match as has been the practice.
Other important recommendation by the Committee on Ranji Trophy was a change in the points system. "We have recommended that the winning team in each match should get six points while a drawn match should fetch three points each for both the teams," Ganguly said.
Earlier in drawn matches, the team which takes first innings lead gets three points while the other side collects one point. The Ganguly-led Committee also recommended the inclusion of the national One-Day champions as the third team in the NKP Salve Challenger Series.
"We have recommended the inclusion of national one-day champions (winner of Vizay Hazare Trophy) as the third team in the NKP Salve Challenger Series. The Board selectors will pick the two teams while the Vizare Hazare Trophy winners will be the third team," said Ganguly.
Till the last season, the NKP Salve Challenger Series was played between three teams - India Red, India Blue and India Green - all picked by the national selectors. The Committee also recommended the Board to prepare some wickets which have grass and bounce on them for the benefit of national team prospects.
Ganguly said the Committee wanted the trial of India 'A' players on such wickets so that this can help them in overseas tours. "We want to have trials of India 'A' players on wickets which have some grass and pace so that it helps them in overseas tours," he said.
"We also have recommended that the Pitch Committee should monitor wickets for domestic matches one week in advance. They should reach the venue one week before a game to monitor the pitch," he added.
If in the Ranji Trophy knockout phase, a result on first innings is not obtained at the end of the fifth day, then the match will be extended into a sixth day. If a result on first innings is not obtained even at the end of the sixth day, then the winner will be decided on the spin of a coin.
Regarding the Ranji Trophy points system, an outright win give the team six points while both teams will get three points each in case of a tie on both innings. If a team wins by an innings or by 10 wickets, it will get one bonus point.
A first Innings lead but no outright win will give the team three points while a loss on first innings will fetch one point. A tie on first innings without outright result will result to both teams getting one point each. If the innings results were not achieved with or without weather interference, one point will be awarded to each team.
According to another recommendation of the Technical Committee, each Under-22 side will now be called the 'A' team of that association. Players who are below 25 years of age, as on September 1 of that year in which the season starts, will be eligible to be a part of the team. Every team will be allowed to field three Ranji Trophy players (those who have figured in the playing XI in the Ranji Trophy in the ongoing season or immediate preceding season) in each game.
In Under-16 tournaments, all matches in the knockout stage will be four-day affairs. The domestic tournaments, according to recommendations of the Technical Committee, will be played in the order of Duleep Trophy, NKP Salve Challenger Trophy, Ranji Trophy, Irani Cup, Vijay Hazare Trophy, Deodhar Trophy, Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy.
There will be two Irani Cup games in the 2012-13 season. In September, Rajasthan, the Ranji Champions of 2011-12, will play the Rest of India. After the Ranji Trophy final in early 2013, the 2012-13 Ranji Champions will play the Rest of India.

England lead as number one team Icc Test Champ

2012-06-13T03:17:00.000+05:30

England's 2-0 Test series victory over the West Indies gives them an outright lead as the number one team ahead of South Africa on the Reliance ICC Test Championship table.

England now lead South Africa by one ratings point. If England had managed to win the third and final Test they would have extended their lead by a further two ratings points.

Denesh Ramdin's unbeaten knock of 107 in the third and final Test against England, which ended in a draw at Edgbaston on Monday, helped the 27-year-old move up 20 places to 68th in the latest ICC Player Rankings for Test batsmen.

Trinidad-born Ramdin also added 143 runs with Tino Best in a record tenth wicket partnership against England.

Best, who was named man of the match for a knock of 95 and a spell of two for 37, re-entered the batting rankings in 115th place.

The other West Indies batsman to make any gain was opener Adrian Barath who moved to 69th place (up by five).

Shivnarine Chanderpaul, who did not play the final Test, continues to top the batting chart, however there are some changes in the top 10 including England's Alastair Cook who became one of three England batsmen to slip, dropping four places to 10th spot.

Others who slipped in the ICC Rankings included Jonathan Trott to 18th (down by two places) and England captain Andrew Strauss, who was named the joint Man of the Series with West Indies' Marlon Samuels for scoring 326 runs with two hundreds, who fell one place to 24th after he made just 17 runs in the final Test.

Samuels, who finished the series as the leading run-getter on either side with 386 runs, has moved up two spots to 33rd.

Kevin Pietersen has retained his 17th spot while Ian Bell has moved up two places to 16th.

The bowlers' table is headed by South Africa's Dale Steyn with Saeed Ajmal of Pakistan and England's James Anderson in second and third positions, respectively.

Anderson's fellow England bowler, off-spinner Graeme Swann, who picked up six wickets for 282 runs in the series, has slipped four places to eighth.

Meanwhile, Tim Bresnan, who ended with 12 wickets in the series, has moved up one spot to 14th, Steven Finn has moved up two spots to 24th and Graham Onions, returning from a two-year break due to injury, has re-entered the rankings in 46th place.

The ICC Player Rankings for Test all-rounders is still headed by Bangladesh's Shakib Al Hasan with South Africa's Jacques Kallis in second spot.

Reliance ICC Test Championship (after England-West Indies Test series):

1.England 117, 2.South Africa 116, 3.Australia 112, 4.India 111, 5..Pakistan 108, 6.Sri Lanka 99, 7.West Indies 85, 8.New Zealand 85, 9.Bangladesh 8 (Zimbabwe will have to play eight Tests in the qualification period before it will have a ranking)

Australian batsman Simon Katich has retired from first-class cricket

2012-06-13T03:12:00.000+05:30

Hampshire's Australian batsman Simon Katich has retired from first-class cricket in his homeland.
The 36-year-old had been plying his trade in the Sheffield Shield with New South Wales.
Katich's international career ended in some acrimony in 2011 when selectors opted not to renew his central contract despite his impressive form.
In an interview with BBC Solent in April Katich indicated he would like to extend his stay with Hants next year.
The left-hander has not yet confirmed whether he will continue playing first-class cricket in England at the end of his current deal.
Katich also has a Big Bash contract with Perth Scorchers and may also continue in the shorter format.
A statement released by Cricket Australia read: "Simon Katich wishes to advise that he has decided to retire from first-class cricket in Australia.
"The WACA and Cricket NSW have provided wonderful cricketing environments and amazing opportunities for Simon to play under great coaches, with terrific players and surrounded by dedicated support staff.
"He wishes to thank them all for the camaraderie and support over the last 16 years and for the chance to play in winning teams.
"With a young family and a desire for an extended time at home, Simon has decided it is time to reassess his priorities."
Katich has played 247 first-class matches, scoring 19,667 runs and 54 hundreds.

England Vs Westindies 2012 3rd Test Drawn

2012-06-12T01:01:00.002+05:30

The Edgbaston Test met a watery end as the final day was washed out, leaving England 2-0 winners against West Indies in the three-Test series.

Umpires Tony Hill and Kumar Dharmasena, who were widely criticised for taking the players off for bad light on Sunday, delayed the abandonment until 3.00pm as persistent rain fell upon Birmingham once more and any prospects of play seemed minimal. England were 221 for 5 in reply to West Indies' 426

Only 187.3 overs were possible in the Test which also lost its first two days to rain, the first time this had happened in a Test in England since 1964.

100 days away from the first ICC World Twenty20 Tournament

2012-06-11T02:54:00.001+05:30

The 100-day countdown to the Twenty20 World Cup in Sri Lanka from September 18 began on Sunday with more than 350 school children from Kandy district forming a giant `100` at the Pallekele International Cricket Stadium.

At a special event held to commemorate the day, the International Cricket Council, together with Sri Lanka Cricket, donated 100 cricket bats amongst the girls and boys who participated in competitive cricket in Kandy district.

The Twenty20 World Cup will be staged from September 18 to October 7 in Colombo, Hambantota and Pallekele, with the women`s group stages in Galle.

The ICC also announced the launch of more tickets for all matches of the Twenty20 World Cup from June 12 onwards.

ICC Chief Executive Haroon Lorgat said, "We are now 100 days away from the first ICC World Twenty20 tournament in Asia. This year`s event promises to be even more explosive as player skills in the T20 format have expanded and cricket fans from around the world are dashing to be in Sri Lanka," he said in an ICC release.

"The second phase of the ticket sales will be another opportunity for fans that missed out on booking their tickets earlier this year to secure their stadium seat and experience excitement of every ball being hit at the event," Lorgat said.

Upali Dharmadasa, President of Sri Lanka Cricket, said, "The ICC World Twenty20 Sri Lanka 2012 is a sporting spectacle not to be missed by any fan. Sri Lanka is ready and excited to host this global event and I sincerely encourage all cricket fans to purchase the remaining tickets early to avoid last-minute disappointment."

The ticket prices will start from USD 0.25 for the single group games and the final will be priced between USD 2.50 and USD 45.

The Women`s Twenty20 World Cup will be free of charge for spectators in the group stages, which will be played in Galle. The semifinals and final will be played on the same day on the same ground as the men`s semifinals and final and will be covered by the same ticket.

Ishant Sharma has ruled himself India’s tour of Sri Lanka

2012-06-11T02:48:00.002+05:30

Recuperating after undergoing an ankle injury, pacer Ishant Sharma has ruled himself out of India’s ODI tour of Sri Lanka next month.

The 23-year-old speedster said that although he has resumed bowling and light training, it would be extremely difficult for him to attain match fitness before the scheduled Sri Lanka tour, which starts on July 22.

“I’m feeling strong and good again and even started to bowl four-over spells. However, it will be difficult to get fully fit in time for next month’s tour to Sri Lanka,” said Ishant.

“Intensity of bowling and fitness has to increase gradually and I would also need some match practice to check myself. I think I will take two or three months more to regain match fitness,” he added after returning from his stint at the National Cricket Academy in Bangalore.

Ishant had been suffering from pain in his right ankle, a result of extra growth in the bone and got the surgery done in London in the last week of March and had to miss this year’s Indian Premier League.

“I had to look at the long term rather than short and I knew surgery was the best option if I had to play for a long time. The key was to be fit in time for the new season and my rehab is progressing well. I am going back to NCA next week,” Ishant told ‘Aaj Tak’

The lanky pacer, who was the toast of the nation exactly a year ago with a record haul of 23 wickets from three Tests in West Indies, was completely out of form during the England and Australia tours last year when Indian lost eight consecutive Tests.

Ishant has his sight firmly set on the Test series against the same nations when they tour India later this year and early 2013.

“I think I bowled well in the Tests against England and was unlucky to get injured thereafter thus missing a chance to cement my place in the ODI team. My form against the West Indies at home was also good but somehow could not carry it to Australia.

“I know there will be a lot of talk about revenge when England and Australia come here but our focus will just be to win the series and regain the No 1 ranking in Tests. I don’t think we need to prove anything to anyone,” said Ishant.

Having taken 133 wickets from 45 Tests so far, the lad from Delhi does not want to rush things in his bid to make a comeback in the Indian team.

“It was only after 30 Tests that I came to know about my exact fitness levels and my bowling and its strength and weaknesses. Fast bowling is 70 per cent fitness and the rest is skill.

“Earlier when I used to bowl after a long gap, the legs always felt a bit of pain. But this is not happening post surgery. I want to prove myself in domestic cricket before returning to the Indian team. More bowling, more fitness is my mantra right now,” insisted Ishant.

Stating that he was not bogged down with the possibility of leading the Indian pace attack in Zaheer Khan’s absence in future, Ishant said, “I love bowling with Zaheer. We haven’t played together after England. But I always relish the opportunity.”

Michael Hussey Pulls Out Of England Series

2012-06-11T02:40:00.001+05:30

Michael Hussey has been allowed to skip Australia's tour of Ireland and England in June and July to be with his family after the premature birth of his child. Cricket Australia said he will be replaced by Queensland batsman Peter Forrest in the 15-man squad.

"Due to our baby being born three months early, it is important for the family for me to be here at this time," Hussey said. "It is always difficult to miss any tour for Australia and I thank CA for their understanding of our family's situation."

Forrest, who has played 11 ODIs so far, had been named as the stand-by player when the squad was named in May. He will now be part of the touring party that leaves Australia on June 14.

The Australians will play Leicestershire in a tour game on June 21 before taking on Ireland in a one-off ODI in Stormont on June 23. After another tour game against Essex, Australia will play England at Lord's on June 29 in the first of five ODIs

Tino Best makes Record at Edgbaston England Vs West Indies

2012-06-11T02:32:00.002+05:30

Tino Best struck the highest score by a Test number 11 as the West Indies all but ended England's chances of completing a series whitewash at Edgbaston.

Best smashed 95 in a thrilling last-wicket partnership of 143 with Denesh Ramdin, who scored 107 not out as the Windies took their first-innings total from an overnight 280-8 to 426.

England lost their top three batsmen cheaply before Kevin Pietersen and Ian Bell steadied the ship with a fluent partnership of 137.

Pietersen was caught at slip off Marlon Samuels for 78 and Jonny Bairstow was clean bowled by Best for 18, but Bell remained unbeaten on 76 as England reached 221-5 at the close, still 205 behind.

With only one day's play remaining, and rain forecast, a draw seems inevitable, but thanks to the heroics of Best an otherwise forgettable Test will live long in the memory.

When the Windies lost their ninth wicket in the first over of the day, it appeared England would soon be setting about overhauling a total of less than 300.

But Best had other ideas, the stocky fast bowler from Barbados launching into a thrilling counter-attack.

He threw the bat at anything wide from the seamers and cut successive balls from Graeme Swann for four to go past his previous highest Test score of 27.

He became the first number 11 to score a fifty against England since 1906, launching into an exuberant arm-wheeling celebration on reaching the mark.

He surpassed India paceman Zaheer Khan's record for a number 11 of 75 with a four over gully then hammered Tim Bresnan's next ball over the bowler's head for six.

Meanwhile Ramdin, dropped by Pietersen in the gully on 69, played watchfully at the other end before accelerating through the nineties to bring up his second Test century - and first for 22 innings - off 160 balls.

Another extraordinary celebration followed as Ramdin removed a piece of paper from his pocket carrying the words "Yeah Viv Talk Nah" - a riposte to criticism of his batting on Test Match Special from Windies legend Sir Viv Richards.

With the crowd willing Best to reach three figures, the pressure seemed to tell, and after almost falling twice to Jonathan Trott's part-time medium pace, he was deceived by a slower ball from Graham Onions and caught by Andrew Strauss running back from slip.

Best was not out of the action for long, and he was soon testing out the England openers with deliveries in excess of 90mph.

The breakthrough came at the other end, however, as Ravi Rampaul thudded one into Alastair Cook's pads to send him on his way.

Trott was bowled by Darren Sammy off an inside edge before Best had Strauss caught at first slip, and set off on another wild celebration.

At that point, England were reeling on 49-3, but Bell soon restored a sense of calm to proceedings with some considered strokeplay, allowing Pietersen to go through his full range of shots.

Off-spinner Sunil Narine found the going tough on his Test debut, conceding 68 runs from 13 overs as the pair reached their fifties within a single ball of each other.

After two short interruptions for bad light, Pietersen steamed to within 22 runs of his 21st England ton before he was caught at slip trying to run Samuels down to third man.

Fittingly, Best had the final word as he followed up a bouncer with a fuller delivery to Bairstow and flattened the Yorkshireman's middle stump.
