World T20 Match-3: Ireland put Zimbabwe into bat

SYLHET: Ireland captain William Porterfield won the toss and elected to field first against Zimbabwe in the third match (Group ‘B’) of the fifth ICC World Twenty20 first round here at the Sylhet Divisional Stadium on Monday.

While the Irish will be aiming to make an impressive start to the tournament with a big win over a side that has been away from competitive cricket for more than six months, Zimbabwe’s pride will be at stake as they are the only Full Member nation of the ICC which is in the qualifying round.

The Brendan Taylor-led side hasn’t played international cricket since their famous victory over Pakistan in the final Test of the two-match series at Harare in September 2013, as this is the only bright spot as well as a source of inspiration for them.

Myburgh steers Netherlands to six-wicket win over UAE

SYLHET: The Netherlands defeated the United Arab Emirates by six wickets in the fourth match of the World Twenty20 First Round Group ‘B’ here at the Sylhet Divisional Stadium on Monday.

Chasing 152, the Netherlands completed their well deserved victory with seven balls remaining.

Opener Stephan Myburgh scored a fine 55 from 36 balls with seven fours and two sixes.

Besides, allrounder Tim Cooper made an unbeaten 34 while Michael Swart and Wesley Barresi also made useful contributions of 26 and 24, respectively

For UAE, seamer Kamran Shazad claimed two wickets for 19 runs.

UAE batted first after winning the toss and were bowled out for 151 in 19.5 overs.

Their main scorers were Shamim Anwar (32), Khurram Khan (31), Swapnil Patil (23) and Rohan Mustafa (20).

For The Netherlands, pacer Ahsan Malik Jamil captured three wickets for 16 while off-break bowler Tom Cooper and fast-medium bowler Tim van der Gugten claimed two wickets each for 18 and 24, respectively.

Tom Cooper’s value to the Netherlands side became all too obvious on Monday (March 17) night as he played the lead role in his team’s six-wicket victory over the United Arab Emirates in the ICC World Twenty20 2014 qualifying phase.

Cooper picked up the wickets of Khurram Khan, the UAE captain, and Swapnil Patil in one over, then made an unbeaten 34 as the Netherlands chased down 152 with some comfort.

For a side that has been under the cosh a bit in recent times for its inability to chase down totals, this was a morale-boosting win. “Looking from afar, we have obviously lost a few games we should have won,” admitted Cooper. “I guess it is very satisfying to be able to contribute to steering the ship home and getting a win in what was a very important game. There is a lot of skill in this team. If the boys remain calm under pressure, I cannot see it (the chasing woes) happening too much more often, hopefully.”

Cooper flew in from Australia just in time for this game, and said the conditions meant he didn’t have too much adjusting to do. “It was a very good wicket out there. It wasn't too hard I guess; under the lights there was a lot of dew on the wicket so it skidded on nicely,” he said.

Of his own bowling, Cooper was a little more than self-deprecating. “I guess I got a little bit lucky with the ball,” he smiled. “It is very hit and miss, and Petey (Borren, the captain) threw me the ball at a pretty crucial stage. I fortunately had a couple of wickets there. I thought the rest of the bowlers bowled really well. To keep them to 150 on that wicket was a great effort. Steph (Myburgh) and Mickey (Swart) got us off to a great start. It was a case of steering the ship home at the end there.

“I guess, looking back at it, those two strikes were very crucial but we had Ahsan Malik to come on and we continued to take wickets at regular intervals after that, which enabled us to keep them to 150. At a point, they were looking to get a few more. It was a great team effort to continue to take wickets, skip with a great run-out, took a lot of momentum into our batting innings.”

Khurram, meanwhile, said nerves had no part to play in his team’s loss in its first appearance at the World T20. “Actually, I do not think it was big-match nerves. Our fielding has been a real concern for the last few games,” he said, referring to nearly half a dozen catches being put down. “We dropped them in the last game as well. We are giving too many chances in the field, we dropped too many and in the end we paid for that.”

On match eve, Khurram had said he would have taken 150, and his batsmen gave him 151, which wasn’t anywhere near enough. “I said 150 would have been a good target but you have to keep in mind that you have to bowl very well and take your catches. At one stage, we could have got 170-175. We were 25 runs short. That was the difference in the end,” he said.

“There is no doubt about the fact that the Netherlands openers (Stephan Myburgh and Michael Swart) batted really well. But that is what happens in the first six overs. If you don't
bowl well, in the good areas, obviously you are going to go for runs and then we kept giving them chances, we dropped so many catches.”

UAE kept losing wickets in pairs, wickets of set batsmen at that. “It is the responsibility of the batsman who is there (to carry on). I gave away my wicket in the same over Swapnil (Patil) got out and then in the 15th-16th over, we lost three wickets in the span of three-four runs. Both Rohan (Mustafa) and Shaiman (Anwar) were playing very well and Amjad Javed is a very good batsman for us. That cost us dearly,” explained Khurram.

NEPAL ROUTS HONG KONG IN ONE-SIDED AFFAIR

Paras Khadka talks a good game of cricket, and he, along with ten of Nepal’s finest, walked the walk in their country’s debut match of the ICC World Twenty20 2014, wrapping up a historic and sparky win over Hong Kong. For a decade and a bit, Nepal waited patiently, and when the moment came, it seized it in some style, blowing away Hong Kong in an 80-run win in Chittagong on Sunday (March 16).

With Bangladesh shooting Afghanistan out on a dry turner in Mirpur to get the tournament off to the start home fans wanted, a festive crowd turned up at the Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium and got their money’s worth. Even in countries where fans are passionate about the game, it isn’t easy to draw big crowds for games between two neutral associates and when in excess of 10,000 cheered as one, it certainly made world cricket’s newest entrants feel welcome and wanted at the highest level.
When Jamie Atkinson, Hong Kong’s captain, won the toss, he did not need to think too much about putting Nepal in. A generous smattering of live grass on the pitch and the possibility of dew later in the evening prompted the move. While the thinking was sound, it did not quite factor in the determination of the Nepalis.
Subhash Khakurel and Sagar Pun showed no sign of nerves at the top of the order, even against the quality of Tanwir Afzal and Haseeb Amjad, two bowlers good enough to have played for Pakistan Under19. Khakurel was comfortable on front and back foot, a swiveling pull off Afzal early on setting the pace. Pun took a liking to the spinners, stepping down the pitch to loft 42-year-old debutant Najeeb Amar over cover off the first ball he bowled.
Hong Kong pulled things back after a brisk start with both openers being dismissed with the score on 36.
Khadka opened his account with a meaty slog sweep, and proved he was not a one-trick pony with an effortless lift over extra-cover. On 20, Khadka should have been back in the hut, but Afzal dropped the first of many catches for Hong Kong, grassing a sitter at long-on.
Once he had the opening, Khadka made the most of it, chancing his arm in the company of Gyanendra Malla, who endeavoured to keep his end solid. The two ran hard between the wickets – all those years of high-altitude living clearly making things easier at sea level – and before Hong Kong knew it, the game was slipping away.
When Khadka (41) holed out at long-on in the 17th over, Hong Kong was still in with a sniff, but Malla then took over, raining big blows. Malla (48) was one of four wickets to fall in an anticlimactic final over, but Nepal had done enough, putting 149 on the board.
Hong Kong needed a strong start, but it got anything but that as Khadka, bowling around the stumps to the right-handed Irfan Ahmed, struck off the first ball. Pushing forward, Irfan feathered an edge and Khakurel fumbled the ball but held on for dear life.
Sompal Kami, the youngest player to feature in this tournament at 18 years and 42 days, got a back of a length skidder to hurry Atkinson and a thick inside edge crashed on to the stumps. Waqas Barkat (18) played some muscular heaves through the on-side and Mark Chapman contemplated getting his eye in before teeing off, but Nepal’s bowlers, backed by vigilant in-fielding, kept the pressure on. Basant Regmi tossed one of his left-arm spinners up just enough to beat Chapman in the flight and when the stumps were disturbed, the chase was dead in the water at 58 for 4. That three more wickets fell on the same score, Nizakat Khan, Afzal and Aizaz Khan all falling for ducks, confirmed the rout.
Shakti Gauchan (3/9) and Regmi (3/14), showed just why left-arm spin is king in Bangladesh as Hong Kong imploded to 69 all out in 17 overs.
If this was the worst nightmare coming true for Hong Kong, a team that has strived over the years to show just what the smaller cricketing nations can do with the right help, it was nothing short of a fairytale for Nepal. Now that this is out of the way, the dreams of Khadka, his team-mates and their many staunch followers, will only get bigger and bigger.

The ICC T20 World CUP 2014 will take place in Bangladesh. The series will start from 16th March 2014 and will end on 6th April 2014. As Bangladesh is hosting the series, therefore excellent arrangements have been made so that the cricket fans can enjoy a superb series. In total, 35 matches have to be played as a part of the series at the different venues including Sylhet, Dhaka and Chittagong. This is the second time when any Asian country will be hosting the ICC T20 World Cup. The entire schedule of the T20 series is planned by the ICC.

This series will be played among the 10 teams, out of which eight teams have already been declared which includes Australia, England, India, New Zealand, Pakistan, South Africa, Sri Lanka and West Indies . While the two teams will be selected from the Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Hong Kong, Ireland, Nepal, Netherlands, United Arab Emirates and Zimbabwe. The group stage teams will compete with one another to make their place in the top 10 teams. This is for the first time when 16 teams will be playing the ICC T20 World CUP2014.

Spinners play the lead as host takes decisive step towards clinching Super 10 berth

Eight parts elation and two parts relief combined to make it a perfect ten for Bangladesh as the ICC World Twenty20 2014 got its first shot in the arm on a sparkling Sunday (March 16) afternoon.

In effectively a knockout game, Bangladesh exorcised the demons of the Asia Cup disaster with a commanding nine-wicket drubbing of a shell-shocked Afghanistan at Sher-e-Bangla Stadium in the inaugural match of the Group A qualifying competition, sending the thousands of fans at the venue and millions others across the country into delirium.

There was every possibility of the average Bangladeshi losing interest in the competition in the event of the home side not making it through to the Super 10 phase of the competition. Anticipation was tinged with apprehension in the lead-up to the game, the scars inflicted by Afghanistan during the 32-run win at the same venue in the Asia Cup last week a painful, lingering reminder as Mushfiqur Rahim and Mohammad Nabi walked out for the toss.

In the event, everyone was left wondering what the fuss had been all about. Afghanistan looked nowhere near the force it had threatened to be at various stages of the Asia Cup while Bangladesh, which lost all four matches in the continental 50-over competition, was a unit transformed, stifling its opponents through spin and fielding with an alacrity that was refreshing.

Rahim won a toss that was to prove inconsequential in the end and Mashrafe Mortaza got Bangladesh off to the perfect start by eliciting a loose stroke from Mohammad Shahzad off the first ball of the competition. But it wasn’t until spin was introduced in the shape of Shakib Al Hasan that the game took clear shape. Shakib, Mahmudullah and Abdur Razzak tied Afghanistan up in knots on a surface that allowed the ball to grip and bounce, and from 36 for 1, Afghanistan hurtled on a downward spiral to be shot out for 72, its lowest T20I total, with nearly three overs left unutilised.

Such a paltry score was never going to seriously test Bangladesh, not with Afghanistan relatively light on spinning strength. Nabi got appreciable turn with the new ball, but Tamim Iqbal and Anamul Haque in particular scored freely to set the base for their winning total of 78 for 1 with 48 deliveries to spare.

About the only talking point during the chase was Dawlat Zadran’s run-ins, first with Tamim, then Shakib. Dawlat, who worked up good pace and touched 90mph more than once, appealed unsuccessfully and needlessly for ‘obstructing the field’ against Tamim who was talking evasive action, then got in Shakib’s ears after a snorter that struck the batsman on his gloves. It was part aggression, part frustration, stemming from the realisation that his batsmen had left him and his bowling colleagues with simply nothing to defend.

As well as Bangladesh’s assortment of spinners bowled, it was a disappointing performance from Afghanistan’s batsmen, who looked ill at ease the moment spin was introduced. All this, after Gulbadin Naib had threatened something substantial by clattering Al-Amin Hossain over long-on and following it up with two boundaries to somewhat offset the early loss of Shahzad.

Just about the only mistake from Bangladesh on the field came when Sabbir Rahman put Naib down at long-on off Shakib. Rahman immediately atoned for that lapse by running some 15 yards to his right to hang on to a slog-sweep off the very next delivery, and when Najeeb Tarakai, the other opener, fell next ball, getting a leading edge to an intended flick, the cat was well and truly among the pigeons.

Afghanistan had shown a distinct fallibility against spin in the Asia Cup, and that old failing came back to haunt it again. As the ball turned, the batsmen tried to hit their way out of trouble and came a distinct cropper. It didn’t help their cause either that Bangladesh was on top of its fielding game, Rahman scoring a direct hit from short fine-leg to evict Nawroz Mangal and Farhad Reza producing a stunning throw from deep midwicket that crashed into the stumps at the bowler’s end to get rid of Karim Sadiq.

Sadiq was one of only three Afghan batsmen to touch double figures. The spinners’ figures were quite flattering – Shakib finished with 3 for 8 from 3.1 overs, Mahmudullah had 1 for 8 from 4 and Razzak 2 for 20 from 4. That amounted to 6 for 36 from 11.1 overs of spin. Afghanistan lost its last nine wickets for 36 runs in 72 deliveries and, most likely, the chance to keep itself in contention for a Super 10 berth.

Pakistan all but knocked India out of the Asia Cup with a tense, one wicket win with only two balls to spare

A big match that lives up to its billing is a rare animal, with pressure and inspiration doing strange things to sportsmen, but when it comes off, there’s nothing quite like it for edge-of-seat excitement.

Mohammad Hafeez had done all the hard work in setting things up for Pakistan, but it was the man with the box office appeal who was destined to apply the finishing touches to a thrilling win over India. Shahid Afridi hasn’t been a batting force in a while, but on the big stage, he walked in with the match in the balance and smashed 34 not out off 18 balls to take his side to a one-wicket win with two balls to spare after India had been restricted to 245 for 8 at the Sher-e-Bangla Stadium in Mirpur.

When the last over began, Pakistan needed 10 to win with two wickets in hand. A carom ball first up from R Ashwin bowled Saeed Ajmal round his legs, and when a single was taken off the next ball you could cut the air with a knife. Not for Afridi though, who calmly smacked two sixes. It was as audacious as it was breathtaking and only Afridi could have pulled it off.

It was all set-up by Hafeez, who had a good day all-round on Sunday (March 2), despite running Misbah-ul-Haq out and dropping the simplest of chances off Ravindra Jadeja that proved costly. However, his guiding hand of 75 off 117 from No. 3 coupled with a blinder of a catch to send back a fluent Rohit Sharma and a return 2 for 38 in nine overs, ensured Pakistan had much to thank him for.

With this win, Pakistan is almost assured of a spot in the final, while India will be left hoping for a miracle and can only make it if Bangladesh beat Pakistan.

Hafeez had come in when Pakistan was motoring along after a brisk opening stand. He then weathered a superb spell of legspin bowling from Amit Mishra during a familiar batting collapse. From 80 for 1 in 12 overs when Mishra came on, Pakistan slipped to 130 for 4 in 27 overs after he bowled a first spell of 8-0-16-2.

Mishra’s first wicket was that of a free-stroking Ahmed Shehzad, who pulled a short delivery to midwicket to go for 42 off 44. In his next over, Hafeez called Misbah for a run and then turned him back, not leaving his captain enough time to beat Mishra’s low collection and dive towards the stumps.

Umar Akmal, Pakistan’s form batsman, played a shot he won’t want coaches to see. Attempting to hit his way out of pressure, Umar was deceived by the flight and skied to cover as Pakistan were reduced to 113 for 4.

Mishra had single-handedly dragged India back into the chase. When he came on to bowl, it was only the second time he had been handed the ball in an international match in five months. For all the rustiness he showed, Mishra might as well have been made of gold. That was the colour of the medal that he should have earned, but for Afridi’s heroics.

The other bowlers drew inspiration from Mishra for large parts though, with freebies cut to a minimum, as Hafeez and Maqsood pitched camp. They decided that caution was the name of the game, and that hitting out could be saved for the death overs. It was as ploy that worked, though Pakistan was helped at one key moment by a Dinesh Karthik fumble. With the Power Play on, Maqsood charged R Ashwin, who cleverly pulled his line legside. The batsman missed the ball, but so did Karthik and Maqsood had a reprieve on 21 in the 38th over. That marked the second time Karthik had missed a potentially game-changing stumping in two matches.

Hafeez and Maqsood had put on 87 and begun to open their shoulders, when there was another wobble, with both set men out within an over off each other. Hafeez’s attempted sweep off R Ashwin only found Bhuvneshwar Kumar at backward square leg, while Maqsood was run out after a mix-up with Shahid Afridi. A tense but gettable chase had suddenly turned steep with Pakistan 203 for 6, needing 43 off 32, but the main man still there.

That India had almost enough to defend was down to three half-centuries, made in contrasting styles, from Rohit Sharma, Ambati Rayudu and Ravindra Jadeja.

Rohit hit some delightful shots on his way to 56 off 58 at the top of the order, Rayudu showed composure while making 58 off 62, and Jadeja added thrust at the end with an unbeaten 52 off 49, riding his luck and surviving a close lbw shout and a dropped chance – both off Hafeez’s bowling. Hafeez did well all-round, taking 2 for 38 and a couple of good catches.

India was initially put under pressure by Mohammad Talha, who has played two Tests five years apart. On ODI debut, Talha worked up pace and bowled with discipline to return impressive figures of 2 for 22 in seven overs, and Saeed Ajmal proved as difficult to read as ever, particularly for the tail, and ensured there was no final flourish to the innings with 3 for 40.

Hafeez started the day with the first strike, trapping Shikhar Dhawan in front to leave India 18 for 1 in 3 overs. He then took a brilliant catch to send back Rohit in the 20th over, running back from short midwicket towards square-leg, avoiding a collision and clutching the ball. Rohit, who found form in this match after a couple of average outings, had tried to pull Talha but only got a top edge. Four overs later, Hafeez timed his jump at midwicket nicely to send back Ajinkya Rahane, again off Talha.

Karthik came in at 103 for 4, and with only 23.2 overs bowled, he had the time and space to build a statement-making innings. However, Karthik never looked comfortable during his stay, though he did well to stick it out in a half-century stand with Rayudu. A further half-century stand ensured India would touch nearly 250 – a total that seemed out of reach at various stages — with Jadeja playing the supporting role.

It had almost been enough until Afridi entered and created mayhem. He smashed bowlers with the power and timing of old, but watched with dismay as one batsman after another fell. In the end, it didn’t matter that no one was left with him. Big stars deliver box-office hits all by themselves.
