prabha.kumbhar@gmail.com

[This article is published in Lokpraba - reblogged here for Trekker's information. The forts Korigad and Ghangad lay this region. Korigad is built near the Savashni Ghat, which connects Lonavla and Pali. This fort is well known due to its fortification that is still intact. To visit the forts in this region, one needs at least 3-4 days leisure. One can also go for a cross-country trek which includes Korigad, Ghangad, Tailbaila Walls, Sudhagad and Sarasgad.

History:
Shivaji Maharaj incorporated this fort in Swarajya along with Lohgad, Visapur, Tung and Tikona in 1657. On March 11, 1818, Col. Prother invaded this fort but could not succeed even after prolonged fighting. Finally he succeeded on 14th March, by dropping a cannon ball where the ammunition was stored. Along with this fort the English also conquered Ghangad.

Fascinating Spots :
Koraigad appears like a wall from Peth Shahpur. On the top of the fort is a huge plateau. The ramparts on this fort are around 1 ½ kms in length. One can move along the complete top of the fort by walking on the bailey. While coming up from the Peth-Shahpur route, we come across many caves, some cisterns and an idol of lord Ganesh.

After entering the Ganesh Darwaaja (Peth Shahpur route), we can see the remnants of the old buildings. Here we can see the temple of Goddess Korai Devi. This temple has been renovated recently. There is a “DEEPMALA” right in front of the temple. The idol of Korai Devi is around 4 feet high. There are many bastions on the Southern side of the fort. There are 6 cannons on this fort. Of these, the biggest cannon named “Laxmi” lies next to the Korai Devi temple. There are two more temples on the fort.

There are two large ponds on this fort and ahead of them are two caves. Here we can see the idol of lord Vishnu holding the Conch, Discus, Mace and Lotus flower.

From here Nagphani Point, Tung, Tikona, Matheran, Prabalgad, Karnala and Manikgad ranges can be viewed.

Ways To Reach:
There are two routes that lead to the top of the fort.

Accommodation Facility:
Trekkers can stay in the temple on top of the fort.

Food Facility:
Food arrangements have to be made by the trekkers themselves.

Drinking Water Facility:
The water in both the ponds is not potable. The water in the cistern just next to the entrance while coming via the Peth Shahpur can be used for cooking and drinking purposes.

Time To Reach:
Via Peth Shahpur - 30 mins

Text Contents: Trekshitiz

View RSS feed

It lies in Satara district of Maharashtra. The route from Poladpur (on Mumbai-Goa Highway) to Pargaon is called as Parghat, whereas the later portion of the road is called as Ambenali Ghat. This fort enabled to establish a good control over these Ghat sections. The river Koyna flows at the foot-hills of this fort. The surrounding of the fort is covered with thick forest which is famous by the name, ‘Jawali’.
History :
This fort was initially recognised as the Bhorpya hill until Shivaji Maharaj completely reconstructed it, which was later recognised as ‘PRATAPGAD’. The construction of this fort was done under supervision of Shivaji Maharaj’s Prime Minister, Moropant Trimbak Pingle. (Prime Minister was recognised as “Peshwe” during those days. Peshwe was used as ‘Title’ then).

This fort has got significant historic importance due to the the famous temple of “Bhavani Mata”, constructed by Shivaji Maharaj and the event of Assassination of Afzalkhan on it.

Assassination of Afzalkhan : The wife of Sultan of Vijapur, known as ‘Badi Sahebin’, used to efficiently handle all the operations of kingdom of Adilshah. She ordered Afzalkhan to attack Shivaji Maharaj. He was accompanied by infantry along with elephants & horses.
When Afzalkhan (henceforth referred as ‘Khan’) reached Wai, he instructed his lawyer, Krishnaji Bhaskar, to arrange a meeting with Shivaji Maharaj. However, Shivaji Maharaj, who was eventually at Pratapgad, had understood through his detectives that Khan, infact, had come with the intention of killing him. Knowing the strength of armed-forces that Khan had along with him, Maharaj fixed the meeting with Khan at Pratapgad. As a proactive step towards war, Maharaj stationed Netaji Palkar in the forest of Jawali, Moropant Peshwe in Ghats, Shamrao Nilkanth & Trimbak Bhaskar in Konkan region and Haibatrao and Balaji Shilmakar in Bacheghodi Ghat. Their respective troops of soldiers were instructed to come ahead only in the event of war.

A ‘SHAMIYANA’, the tent, was built for the meeting on the plateau of the fort. It was well decorated with gold, silver and diamonds. Maharaj was accompanied by two body guards, namely, Jiva Mahala and Sambhaji Kawji, whereas Khan had Sayyed Banda and other two of his officials with him.

The meeting between Shivaji Maharaj and Afzalkhan took the following itinerary:
When Afzalkhan and Maharaj came in front of each other, Khan spread out his hands in a gesture to embrace Shivaji Maharaj. Khan had a sturdy and stout built as against Maharaj. After hugging Maharaj, Khan cunningly held Maharaj’s neck firmly in his armpit; took out a dagger and attempted to stab Maharaj on his back. Maharaj was very well aware of Khan’s intentions and hence was wearing body-armor. In addition to it, Maharaj was equally prepared and had ‘Wagh Nakha’, the tiger nails hid in his waist-belt. Soon after the brutal attempt of Khan, Maharaj thronged those tiger nails in Khan’s belly and tore his muscles apart. Khan groaned and shouted for help. Hearing his call, Khan’s men rushed ahead with a palaquin, put Khan in it and started to flee away. At the very moment Sambhaji Kawji arrived at the scene and cut off the legs of those palanquin-bearers carrying Khan; slit Khan’s neck as well. Khan’s body guard, Sayyed Banda, too, rushed at the scene with his powerful weapon, “Patta”, however, it was in vain because Jiva Mahala sliced out his hand which was equipped with weapon.

A signal was given by shooting of cannon-balls to Maharaj’s troops, stationed at various positions (as explained earlier) to move at the warfront. A tough war was fought between the duos which ultimately resulted in the defeat of Khan.

Khan’s troops had to pay a very heavy price as against defeat. His top officers, prime ministers, along with soldiers were slaughtered in the war. Khan had to also loose quite a substantial number of elephants, horses, cattle and other animals in the battle.

Maharaj, on the contrary, gained a lot during the battle. On his account were registered, about 65 elephants, 4000 horses, 1200 Camels, 2000 cloth-bundles, artillery, jewellery and gold coins.
(Courtesy : Sabhasad Bakhar).
Fascinating Spots :
Hastakala Kendra :
This Hastakala Kendra (a retail outlet of handicraft products) is situated enroute from Wada village to Pratapgad. There is also a refreshment centre located within the campus.
Tomb of Afzalkhan :
Enroute to Pratapgad, lies the Tomb of Afzalkhan on the left side of the road. Next to Afzalkhan’s tomb, lies the tomb of his faithful body guard, Sayyed Banda. The tomb is looked after by Afzal Memorial Trust.
Tehalni Buruj (Watch-Tower) :
This is on the western side of the fort. This fortified place is adjacent to the currently existing vehicle parking bay. This Watch-tower was used to keep an eye on the enemy in the surrounding area.
Mahadarwaja :
A road on the left side of the Watch-tower takes us to the entrance steps of the fort. Mahadarwaja lies here in between the two bastions. Cannon can be seen placed at this door. After taking a left turn from this door, two other doors are visible but they are not in use any more.
Rahat Lake :
There are total four lakes on the fort, Rahat lake being the largest among them. On the eastern bastion lie the ponds known as ‘Naske Tale’ and ‘Gode Tale’.
Bhavani Mandir :
The stone from which Goddess Bhavani Mata’s idol is carved has been brought by Shivaji Maharaj with the help of King Leelasen. This stone was extracted from a mountain situated at the convergence point of three rivers namely; Trishul Gandaki, Shwet Gandaki and Saraswati. The idol of Bhavani Mata has been carved by Nepali craftsmen. Shivaji Maharaj worshiped this idol at first on Raigad fort and then later, with the assistance of Moropant Peshwe, it was permanently established on Pratapgad in 1662 A.D.

Just outside the temple, there are two huge stone pillars having rows of lamps, which are called as ‘Deepastambha’. Besides it, there lies an Assembly hall (‘Sabhamandap’) and inside it, is a ‘Ghanta Rangamandap’.

Infront of the idol, a ‘Shivpindi’ made of transparent crystal stone can be seen. Apart from this, there is a sword of the vice-Senapati Hambirrao Mohite, over which his name is engraved along with a sign of ‘6 Ribits’. (One ribit was awarded to a person who kills 100 enemy solders).
Cultural Library :
Some recently established refreshment centers can be seen while moving towards citadel. Within those establishments, on a higher platform, is situated a cultural library. It displays olden coins, dresses of people of those days and vintage paintings of Marathi-style. One can also view a 15minutes slide show arranged by the library officials which gives us information about Pratapgad in brief.
Temple of Lord Hanuman :
This temple lies before the entrance door of citadel. The idol of Lord Hanuman was established by Samarth Ramdas Swami.
Sadar, A Meeting Platform :
As you enter through the door of the citadel, you come across an open space. This is called as ‘Sadar’. Important meetings and discussions used to take place on this Sadar. Opposite to this lies the Kedareshwar Temple.
Statue of Shivaji Maharaj :
As we go ahead from Kedareshwar temple, we comes across a huge statue of Shivaji Maharaj mounted on horse-back with sword in his right hand, raised up towards the sky, and bridle in left hand. This statue has been created by Shri. Kamat, a craftsman from Mumbai, on 30th November 1957. This statue was unveiled by our Late Prime Minister Shri Jawaharlal Nehru.

Apart from above mentioned places, there are many other structures, viz., ‘Yeshwant Buruj’ to the east, ‘Surya Buruj’ near Hanuman Temple to the south and besides it lies a secret-doorway, ‘Rajpaharyachi Dindi’, a place to keep watch-on to the north of the fort.

It takes about 3 to 4 hours to see the fort completely.
Ways To Reach :
Via Poladpur :
Enroute to Mahabaleshwar from Poladpur, lies a village ‘Wada Kumbroshi’. Pratapgad is situated at about 4 kms from this village. One has to take a right turn from the road to Mahabaleshwar from Poladpur. Since, the entire stretch of road is asphalted, State-Transport buses take you upto the base of ‘Tehalni Buruj,’ where there is a parking bay.
From Mahabaleshwar :
‘Pratapgad Darshan’ bus service is available from Mahabaleshwar.
Accommodation Facility :
As you go ahead from the statue of Shivaji Maharaj, there is a Maharashtra Government Rest House. Rooms for accommodating 25 to 30 people are available with prior booking (during season) on the following address :
Vishramdham – Pratapgad,
Taluka : Mahabaleshwar,
District : Satara
Tele # : (952168) 70110.
Food Facility :
Various Restaurants are there on the fort.
Drinking Water Facility :
Perennial source of drinking water is available on the fort.
Best Season To Visit :
The fort can be visited throughout the year. However, nature lovers can enjoy the lush greenery just near the end of rainy season.

Text contents: Trekshitiz

View RSS feed

The fort is also known as Lal Qila, Fort Rouge and Red Fort of Agra. It is about 2.5 km northwest of its much more famous sister monument, the Taj Mahal. The fort can be more accurately described as a walled palatial city.

It is the most important fort in India. The great Mughals Babur, Humayun, Akbar, Jehangir, Shah Jahan and Aurangzeb lived here, and the country was governed from here. It contained the largest state treasury and mint. It was visited by foreign ambassadors, travellers and the highest dignitaries who participated in the making of history in India.

Text Contents: Wikipedia

View RSS feed

In 1983, the Taj Mahal became a UNESCO World Heritage Site and was cited as "the jewel of Muslim art in India and one of the universally admired masterpieces of the world's heritage."

While the white domed marble and tile mausoleum is most familiar, Taj Mahal is an integrated symmetric complex of structures that was completed around 1648. Then Mughal Emperor Akbar wanted to make Fatehpur Sikri his head quarters. So he built this majestic fort. But due to shortage of water he had to ultimately move his headquarters to Agra Fort.

Akbar had no child. After the blessing of Sufi Saint Salim Chisti he was blessed with a male child who became the heir to his throne, he was named Salim (after the name of Sufi Saint Salim) who later become Emperor Jahangir. The tomb "Salim Chisti Ka Mazar" was built in honour of Sufi saint Salim Chishti in 1571 by Mughal emperor Akbar. Earlier it was built with red sand stone but later converted into beautiful marble mauseleum. This was built much later the Fatehpur Sikri Fort was built by Akbar.

The fort is situated at 27° 05' N latitude and 77° 39' E longtitude and a mean altitude of 708 meters above sea level.

Contents: Wikipedia

View RSS feed

It has been rightly said by James Douglas "It was Shivaji's first conquest, the nucleus around which all the others clustered, making it virtually the cradle of the Marathi Empire, which shocked the throne of the great Moguls. It has been the scene of many bloody battles. If Sinhagad is Lion's does then Torna is Eagle's nest."

On the fort are found many trees of the type “Toran”, which may be the reason for the name of the fort. The fort is located in Pune district, 18.36 degrees Latitude & 73.37 degrees Longitude. The village at the base of the fort is called “Velhe”. To the south of Torna is the river of Velvandi & to the north is the Valley of Kanad River.

RAJGAD FORT – CAPITAL FORT OF “HINDAVI SWARAJYA”. Rajgad fort was recognized as first political base of “Hindavi Swarajya”. It still can be witnessed as an unchallangable, undisputable and unconquerable fort in ‘Hindavi Swarajya’.

A ‘Murumbadev’ mountain stands adjacent to the vally formed due to Nire, Velvandi, Kanandi and Gunjavani rivers. The same is 48 Kms. From Pune towards South-West direction and 24 Kms. Nort-West of Bhor.

To expand boundaries of Hindavi Swarajya within Maval region, two forts viz. Rajgadand Torna were considered to be at a prime position then. Although, both the forts were equally unchallangable, Rajgad fort scored an edge over Torna fort primarily because of its huge size. Also the approach to Rajgad made it more unique as one has to either cross a mountain or a river to reach Rajgad fort. In view of the above factors, Shivaji Maharaj selected Rajgad as a capital fort and political base of ‘Hindavi Swarajya’. Rajgad has three Machis` and one Citadel. This Citadel is highest of all as it stands 1394 meters above Mean Sea Level (M.S.L.).

Text Contents from Trekshitiz

View RSS feed

Yes friends, the most prominent, fabulous & significant from all points of view. As a guard of Malshej Ghat, the fort has played a major role in guarding the surrounding region.
History :
The fort is quite ancient. Remnants of Microlithic man have been discovered here. The various Puranas (ancient scriptures) like Matsyapurana, Agnipurana and Skandapurana include many references about Harishchandragad. Its origin is said to have been in 6th century, during the rule of Kalchuri dynasty. The citadel was built during this era. The various caves probably have been carved out in the 11th century. In these caves are idols of Lord Vishnu. Though the cliffs are named Taramati and Rohidas, they are not related to Ayodhya. Great sage Changdev (one who created the epic “Tatvasaar”), used to meditate here in 14th century. The caves are from the same period. The various constructions on the fort and those existing the surrounding region point to the existence of diverse cultures here. The carvings on the temples of Nageshwar (in Khireshwar village), in the Harishchandreshwar temple and in the cave of Kedareshwar indicate that the fort belongs to the medieval period, since it is related to Shaiva, Shakta or Naath.
Later the fort was under the control of Moguls. The Marathas captured it in 1747. The last warrior named Joshi became a martyr in the fight against the English in 1818.

Fascinating Spots :
Saptatirtha :
To the east of the temple is a well-built lake called “Saptatirtha”. On its bank are temple-like constructions in which there are idols of Lord Vishnu. Recently these idols have been shifted in the caves near the temple of Harishchandreshwar. These days many trekkers have been responsible for the sad plight of this beautiful place, as they throw plastic wastes and other things in the pond. 7 years back the water was potable, and now it isn’t suitable even to swim.
Kedareshwar :
Going rightwards of Harishchandreshwar temple, we come across a huge cave. This is the cave of Kedareshwar, in which there is a big Shivlinga, which is totally surrounded by water. The total height from its base is five feet, and the water is waist-deep. It is quite difficult to reach the Shivlinga, as the water is ice-cold. There are sculptures carved out here. In monsoon it is not possible to reach this cave, as a huge stream flows across the way.
Konkan Kada (Konkan cliff) :
The most interesting point on this fort is this cliff, which has always fascinated many people from many years. From here, one can have a breathtaking view of the surrounding region & the setting sun. This cliff is not straight, but concave in its topmost approach. This feature renders it distinct. It has been accessed by rock-climbers only twice till now. Members of Pinnacle group recently ascended this cliff, after 12 years it was ascended for first time. A youth from Pune fell in love with this cliff & jumped from here. A monument is built here in his memory. It is said that a rainbow as a circle is seen from here.
Taramati peak :
This is the topmost point on the fort. Leopards are seen in the forests beyond this peak. From here we can have a glimpse of the whole range of Naneghat and the forts near Murbad
Caves on Harishchandragad :
These caves are situated all over the fort. Many of these are situated at the foot of Taramati peak & are the place of accommodation. A few are near the temple, whereas some are near the citadel and some far away in the forests. A natural cave is on the northwestern side of the fort, to the right of Kokan Kada. It is about 30 feet deep. The folks must know many such caves. Many of these may be remaining undiscovered.
Nageshwar temple near Khireshwar :
This is a great antique construction, and diverse artistic works are seen on this. On the ceiling of the temple are beautiful carvings. There are caves near the temple.
Temple of Harishchandreshwar :
This temple is marvelous example of the fine art of carving sculptures out of stones that prevailed in ancient India. It is about 16m high from its base. Around this temple there a few caves & ancient water tanks. Near the temple, the river Mangal Ganga originates. The top of the temple resembles construction with the north-Indian temples. A similar temple is situated in Buddha-Gaya. Here we can see many tombs, in which a typical construction is seen. These are built by arranging stones one over the other. The stones are well finished. There are three caves near the temple. The cisterns near the temple provide drinking water. Here another temple called Kashitirtha is located.
The fascinating thing about this temple is that it has been carved out from a single huge rock. There are entrances from all four sides. On the main entrance there are sculptures of faces. These are faces of guards of the temple. On the left side of the entrance is a Devnagri inscription, which is about saint Changdev.
Ways To Reach :
Harishchandragad lies where the boundaries of Thane, Pune & Ahmednagar districts converge. There are 4 - 5 known ways to this fort, the most usual being the following ones:
1) From Thane District :
One has to board the bus for Nagar from Kalyan & alight at ‘Khubi Phata’. From there we reach the village of Khireshwar by bus or private vehicle. This village is at 4km from the foothills of the fort.
Way from Khireshwar:
The way beside the caves, where water tanks are seen, proceeds further to Junnar Darwaaja (Entrance From Junnar). From here, the route goes straight to Tolar Khind. Walking a few minutes from Tolar Khind, we come across a rock-patch on which railings are fixed. After ascending the railings, we come to the plateau region on which less dense forests are seen. From here, we have to cross 7 hills & after a walk of 2-3 hours, we reach the temple of Harishchandreshwar, the temple of Lord Shiva.
Note: On this way, many arrows help in indicating the way.
Way from Belpada:
The third way is specially meant for hikers, which is via Sadhleghat. One should board the bus for Malshej Ghat & go to the village of Belpada. From here, the route goes through Sadhleghat. Here one has to climb a straight rock patch on which grips are provided. The temple is situated at a height of about 1km from Belpada. The total distance is about 19km.

2) From Ahmednagar District :
One has to board the bus for Nasik or Mumbai & alight at Ghoti village. From Ghoti, we have to board another bus to Sangamner via Malegaon & alight at Rajur village. From here, 2 ways diverge to the fort.
1) From Rajur, one has to board the bus or a private vehicle to the village of Pachanai. From here, the way is straight to the topmost point.
2) Recently, the way from Rajur to Tolar Khind has been made available. From Tolar Khind (Tolar valley), the temple is about 2-3 hours by walking.
Accommodation Facility :
Ganesh caves & caves near the temple of Harishchandreshwar.
Accommodation in Khireshwar:
In Khireshwar, local school is the best for a night’s stay. In this village, we can see the beautiful temple of Nageshwar as well as ancient caves of the Yadav era.
Food Facility :
In summer & winter, arrangement for food is available on the fort. However, in monsoon, one should make the arrangement himself.
Drinking Water Facility :
The water tanks near the caves.
Notes :
In monsoon, proper care should be taken.

Text Contents from Trekshitiz

View RSS feed

These are connected by ghats. Sixty such ghats exist in Sahyadri, and they have played a major role as commercial routes. Huge forts guarded each of them. The whole range that has been guarding the ancient commercial route of Naneghat for thousands of years includes the forts of Jeevdhan, Hadsar, and Mahishgad & Chavand. Jivdhan lies at the mouth of Naneghat, and is a quite tougher one. Moreover it is famous for the pinnacle Vandarlingi.
History :
The whole range of these forts originated during the rule of Satvaahan era. This is clear from the entrances carved out in stone. The fort stands at an important position and most important guard of Naneghat. From here any help to Naneghat could reach in less time. It was under Bahmani control and after that it went to Nizamshah. In 1636, Nizamshahi declined. Shahajiraje rescued Murtiza, the last Nizam from Jivdhan and took with him to the fort of Pemgiri. But he was trapped by Mughals and had to hand him over to them. This was the end of Nizamshahi. In 1818, the British captured all the forts here and destroyed them. Jivdhan too became a victim and the main entrance was destroyed. Even today the marks of those wounds cannot go unnoticed as we climb the fort.
Fascinating Spots :
Kothi (Storehouse) :
This storehouse is quite huge and is the sole construction, which has remained so intact. It is highly decorative and height is about 4 meters. The pillars are carved out in rock and they are decorated by carving arts, which resemble open hood of a cobra. It is very huge and some of its openings have been closed. Its entrance is big, and much of its part is under the neighbouring hillock. Much of its part may be unexplored.
Water Cisterns :
There are a few cisterns, but those on the western side of the topmost hillock consist of potable water. These two are quite big. There are many dry ones, and we find some near the northern bastion.
Vandarlingi :
This is about 415 feet high. From its base it looks very awesome. Rock-climbers rate it as difficult to climb. It takes about 2 days to climb it. In the base there is a 15 feet deep cave where 4-5 people can stay. Here there some more pinnacles like Tok and Avlyachi Lingi. The way further the pinnacle is traverse to the main mountain and goes to the top. But the way is quite tedious and there are beehives.
Northern Bastion :
This bastion is in better condition and the ramparts here are intact. Here there are remnants of old houses and some cisterns. From here we can have a glimpse of Harishchandragad and pinnacles of Varhadache Navra-Navri to the northwest, Nimgiri and Hadsar to northeast and Chavand on east. From here a check can be kept on base villages and the whole plateau of Naneghat, along with the route to Junnar.
Idol of Goddess Jivai :
This idol was initially on the southern part, but if we do not find it there, it is somewhere else on the fort. It should be seen whenever we go on the fort. Sometimes it may take time to locate it. It is a beautiful idol. It has four hands with weapons, which include a dagger of Muslim type, and a circular weapon. By its one hand the goddess holds the tongue of the animal on which it is standing. The goddess being fearsome represents the ancient and medieval ancestors who were continuously fighting for their freedom.
Ways To Reach :
a) Way from Naneghat (Main entrance) :
This way has approach through the forests and a guide is much helpful. After we climb through dense forests and walk for about 2 hrs, we reach a diversion. On our right is the pinnacle and to the left is the main entrance. If we proceed rightwards, we come to the base of the pinnacle. Way further from here is difficult and there are beehives. We turn to the left from the diversion and reach the steps. These are broken due to the devastation by the British. The entrance being ruined, a small gap exists through which we reach the top of the fort. Here the bastions and ramparts are very intact in spite of such devastation. We reach the western side of the fort.
Way from Ghatghar: :
From Ghatghar village, one way goes to Naneghat and the other goes to the fort. Its much better till one reaches the steps. Some of the steps have been destroyed and it has become slippery. From here we can reach the eastern part of the fort in 2 hours.
Accommodation Facility :
One can stay on the fort in the Kothi, but mice may pose a problem. This imposing structure contains some fabulous examples of early Indo-Islamic architecture. Naldurg Fort is an architectural marvel and the ‘Pani Mahal’, constructed below water, attracts tourists and researchers alike.

The interior portion of the fort is enclosed within ruined walls. There are many bastions in the fort. The Upli Buruj is the highest point in the fort. There are several buildings in the fort which are now in ruins. The dam constructed across the Boru River which connects the fort and the Ranamandala, is worth visiting. The dam and the Pani Mahal were constructed during the reign of Ibrahim Adil Shah II.

The nearest airport is at Pune. Solapur Junction Railway Station is the nearest access point.

Text contents from : http://www.india9.com/i9show/Naldurg-Fort-27161.htm

View RSS feed
