1. Near field communications (NFC) and mobile payments

Near field communication chips have been around for some years, but their time looks like it’s finally coming: a phone could soon become your credit card or be used to organise payment and transport, for instance. Google’s new Nexus S includes the technology, and rumours are that Apple’s new iPhone will too. Initially, however, NFC is likely to be fairly limited: buildings, for instance, have already begun to build NFC chips into their signs so customers can automatically add contact details. It’s only when NFC becomes a ubiquitous, standardised technology that it will make a difference – but that time seems increasingly inevitable.

2. Social gaming

Gaming started to become a truly social experience during 2010, with the advent of games such as Farmville becoming popular across social networks like Facebook. The trend is set to become a dominant one during 2011, as Zynga, one of the largest social gaming companies responsible for the likes of Farmville and Mafia Wars, prepares to release at least three more games, with other studios following suit. Plus unlike many US start up technology companies, there is a proven economic model in place, funded by virtual credits: money for essentially nothing.

3. IPTV

Having been an aspiration for so long , the benefits of internet of finally set to arrive on the biggest screen in the home during 2011. Driven in the UK by the release of YouView, the BBC-backed IPTV offering, timetabled for launch by mid 2011 and dubbed the ‘next generation’ of Freeview. The pay-TV operators have also turned on their web connections, such as Virgin’s new Tivo set-top box, in order to offer their subscribers, a TV schedule which goes backwards as well as forwards in time. The power of social networking has yet to be fully harnessed by advertisers. Although Facebook is now making decent money, complex issues of privacy have prevented it from thoroughly capitalising on the fact that users are sharing huge amounts of information. Turn that on its head however and you get social commerce: people coming together to benefit from massive bulk-buying schemes, even though they’ve never met. In this context recommendation is obviously key, too, and it becomes another medium for advertisers
as well. Groupon has garnered all the headlines so far, but many more brands will emerge in this sphere over the coming year.

5. Everything connected

This trend has been present throughout 2010, but it will accelerate throughout 2011: every device, from the television to your phone to your fridge can now have a web address. That means you can email a picture straight from your mobile to your picture frame already; in future, as internet godfather Vint Cerf has suggested, the cork in a wine bottle will have an address too. Last year, AVG cut down the number of installation screens from 13 to 5. This year, the process continues to be short, but savvy users will want to be wary of a few things. First, if you have a browser open when installing, AVG will not warn you before it forces it to close. Cloud-based file reputation service and streamlined updates, together with enhanced configuration for automatically sandboxing a suspicious program, and the remote assistance feature make for the highlights of the latest major release. Also new to a free antivirus is some incipient form of central management for all avast! installations. At the moment, the service only allows you to view information, and no modifications can be applied. However, this will permit you to check the security status and the activity log of the suite on multiple machines. The new version of avast! comes with a fresh installer that allows you to integrate it into your system as a second line of defense for an already available security product. The interface went through slight modifications. You can check on the protection state at a glance in the Current Status panel. It offers details about the status of real-time shields, definition updates or the expiration date of the program. The same real-time shields protect your system, with the menu showing the status and activity for all of them: file system, mail, web, P2P, IM, network, script and behavioral analysis. For each of them, there are graphs displaying the traffic and amount of items and events analyzed, as well as the number of infections detected.

Furthermore, protection is also ensured through sandboxing, which is automatic in the free version of the product, browser protection (based on community ratings) or site blocking (lets you specify URLs that should be blocked). Remote assistance is also present in this menu, allowing desktop sharing between avast! users. This is most useful in situations when you need technical support from a friend. All remote assistance sessions are carried out securely, through the company’s servers. These can be initiated based on an automatically generated code, which has to be provided to the remote party. Nothing has changed, as far as scan choices are concerned. You can run a quick scan to check the most sensitive areas of the computer (system drive and RAM), a full system scan for a thorough verification, and a custom scan, which lets you choose the areas that should be checked.

There is also the possibility to examine removable media attached to the computer. Moreover, custom scan profiles can be created, where you get to define locations to be inspected. Where the efficiency of the protection layers is concerned, avast! proved to be a very reliable choice, as it managed to eliminate 80.4% of our malware database during an on-demand scan. Out of 66,084 samples (all harvested in the past month) we put it up against, 12,976 were left behind after the first sweep. More threats were uncovered when we tried to launch them and, in some cases, the antivirus flagged them as suspicious and launched them in the sandbox, isolated from the system. Although we did not launch all threats skipped by avast!, the ones picked up by the behavior shield managed to increase its score by almost two points. Further on-demand scans uncovered more malware, although the number was negligible considering the high amount of samples initially left behind.

FileRep, the cloud-based reputation system, alerted us of suspicious downloads and recommended interrupting the connection. It is connected with the sandboxing feature, as files are run isolated from the system and analyzed for malicious behavior. WebRep, on the other hand, is based on information received from the community, as far as website rating is concerned and, in some cases, the rating relies on a small number of votes. As a plus, the plugin has been updated to alert against phishing based on cloud information. Unlike previous versions we analyzed, this release did not raise the flag for the false positives we were usually accustomed with.

Boot-time scanning is also among avast!’s features. This comes in handy since it can search for malware before it becomes active. Although configuring security products may seem pretty daunting for the average user, in this case, everything is simple and straightforward. Both beginner users and more advanced ones can handle the settings quite comfortably. You won’t be put through hardships even if terminology is not familiar, because of the contextual help; additionally, the explanations are easy to comprehend. The free version of avast! does not feature a firewall or antispam, and the hints are all over the place, as upgrade recommendations are present in most parts of the interface. However, the messages do not hinder in any way the handling of the application.

The Good

For a free solution, it integrates a comprehensive suite of security layers. Automatic sandboxing, cloud-based updates and file reputation system, combined with behavioral analysis and traditional definitions make for a reliable antivirus.
Handling the application is easy, and you also get remote assistance possibilities, as well as online monitoring of all avast! installations linked to your account.

The Bad

During our testing, when handling large amounts of data, the interface would become unresponsive. The activity would be carried out in the background, though.

The Truth

HTML Tutorial: Create a Web Page

Are you ready to make your first web page? You need Notepad or another text editor open—a crash helmet is optional.
If you're using Notepad, first go to the Format menu and put a check mark by Word Wrap. This keeps your text from appearing as one long line that you'd have to scroll sideways to see.

As noted earlier, an HTML document starts off with:

This tells the browser it's an HTML document. Clever, huh? Go ahead and type into Notepad now. Next is the:

...tag. Now that you're a an old hand at typing HTML commands, type the tag under your tag.
Note: Technically, you don't actually have to type the head tag under the html tag, but it will help you to visualize the structure. I often start code on new lines because it breaks up the source code with white space, making it much easier to locate the places you want to edit later on. As your page complexity grows with your skill level, this habit can be a valuable time-saver.

There are several items that can go in between the opening head tag and closing head tag, but for a simple page like the one we're creating, we're only concerned with one, and that is the:

<br /> ...tag. The title tag, as you might guess, contains the title of your web page. The title shows up in the title bar at the top of the browser window, as the text when someone bookmarks your page, and as the link text of a search engine query on many search engines. If you look at the top of your browser you should see the words, "Making Your First Web Page" in the title bar because that's the title I gave this page.<br /> You'll also use your first cancel command.<br /> <br />
The cancel command, also called the close command, means you are canceling a previously opened HTML element (tag). In this case, it's telling the browser that the TITLE of the page is complete, or canceled. The forward slash before an HTML element tells the browser that element has been canceled. Note that an element and command are the same thing. Go ahead and add:

...to your HTML document under the HEAD tag now.
Since that is the only element we're adding to the head section, and because you've become such a whiz-bang ding-dang student at typing HTML commands, go ahead and type the command under your title line to cancel the HEAD element.

Next is the:

...tag. The area between the opening and closing body tags is where you put the content you want to show up on the web page when viewed with a browser. Other HTML elements are used within this area as well, which allow you to add images, create paragraph spaces, and to code other display instructions. These other formatting tags do not show up on the web page, but merely tell the browser how to display the information you want to present. When you've completed this tutorial you can go to the individual tutorials and add whatever elements you wish to play around with to your first web page.
As I said, after the BODY tag is where you put the content you want to show on a web page. Your pictures, jokes, links and all else goes here. So for now, just enter the tag under the tag and type a brief message for demonstration purposes. Anything will do, such as "Boogie Jack is so kind for providing these tutorials I think I'll make his next mortgage payment for him." Yeah, that works for me.

Done? Great! You can get my address from my contact page later to send the mortgage payment to me, but for now, we're almost done. The last thing to do is to cancel the BODY and HTML elements. In HTML we always cancel tags in the reverse order they were opened, so type:

Okay, so I might have ad-libbed a little in the content section, but naming your baby Boogie Jack or Boogie Jill is better than naming him or her Wubbyknuckles! I mean, come on, let's get real.
The last thing to do is to save the page you just made. You can call this test page anything, but when you build a web site for real, your home page should always be called index.html. You might as well save this one under that name.

It should be noted that some people name their documents with a .htm extension instead of .html, but not all servers look for the .htm extension when it can't find .html, so it's wise to get in the habit of saving them as .html right now.

Note: When saving your document, enclose it in quotation marks to prevent your system from adding .txt (for text file) to the end. In the box where you type the name you want to save the file under, type it as:

"index.html"

...and be sure to include the quotation marks around the name and file extension.

Now that you've saved it, open it in your browser and see what you've made! To do that just hit Control and (the letter) O on your keyboard then hit the Browse (IE) or Choose File (Netscape) button to navigate your computer. Find the trial index page you just made and click it, then click OK. Then just hit the back button to return here.

Now you're ready to move beyond the basics, but I'd highly recommend you read through the short section on Site Planning first.

Increase Virtual RAM

Follow the steps given below :-

1) Hold down the 'Windows' Key and Press the 'Pause/Break' button at the top right of your keyboard.
Another way is Right-Clicking 'My Computer' and then Select 'Properties'.

2) Click on the 'Advanced' tab.

3) Under 'Performance', click 'Settings'.

4) Then click the 'Advanced' tab on the button that pops up.

5) Under 'Virtual Memory' at the bottom, click 'Change'.

6) Click the 'Custom Size' button.

7) For the initial size (depending on your HD space), type in anywhere from 1000-1500 (although I use 4000), and for the Maximum size type in anywhere from 2000-2500 (although I use 6000).

8) Click 'Set', and then exit out of all of the windows.
