S'mores Science!!

We made s'mores in the oven to show how the carbon in sugar turns brown when exposed to heat. Danielle made observations every minute and recorded how the marshmallows changed color and shape.

Sadly there are no pictures of the completed s'mores, as they were eaten up so fast I didn't have a chance to grab my camera!!

Half year homeschool check in..

Well, we are half way though the year, and it's time to see how we are doing.
Both kids did awesomely on their math benchmark tests, and both could use a little work on their Language Arts benchmarks. We are still using the curriculum mentioned in my beginning of the year post, and it's all still working really well!
We have implemented a new reward system, Warm Fuzzies. I have a bank of little sparkly pom-poms, which I dole out at random times to reward good behaviors. Asking for a Fuzzie will get one taken away, leaving your Fuzzies out will get them returned to the bank, fighting, tantrums and other undesirable behaviors will get Fuzzies taken away. On Friday, they can turn their Fuzzies in for a quarter each. They have the option to take the $$ or to bank it for the next week to save for something bigger. So far, it's working quite well.
Also, we have made the decision to move the children to a new charter school next school year. Central Valley Homeschool was good to us, but Jack has more needs then they can handle. So, we are moving to Eleanor Roosevelt Community Learning Center in Visalia, CA. Hopefully (fingers, toes and eyes crossed) they will have a center here in Fresno by next year :)
Danielle is working on preparing for STAR testing later this spring. It's making me wanna tear my hair out, but it's sadly a fact of life.

Why my blog will be dark tomorrow..

I along with many other websites (such as Wikipedia, Reddit, ICanHazCheeseburger Network and others) and hopefully many of my fellow bloggers will be going dark tomorrow to protest the anti-piracy bill known as SOPA (Stop Piracy Online Act). The point of SOPA was to target overseas sites that allow people to illegally download content, such as movies and music. While we are all in theory against internet piracy, this bill would not hold the overseas sites accountable, but rather turn the blame and the punishment on to sites that allow those sites in their search results (such as Google) or YouTube for hosting a video where a copyrighted song is playing in the background of a video of a cat sneezing. Punishment for such infringement? Your site goes dark. It's all the wrong way to go about it, and worse, it could be used in ways it was not originally intended to increase internet censorship.
Free speech is our given right, and allowing our government officials, who quite possibly know less about how the internet works then my mom does, to make wide sweeping laws about it's use and available is one way to give our own access to free speech away. Join with me, and make your voice heard, say FUCK NO to SOPA!!

For science today, we learned about Na, or as its more commonly called Sodium. We learned that when Sodium makes water more dense and therefore things in it are more buoyant.

We started out with two glasses of plain water with two raw eggs.

Every year at this time, I climb on my soapbox like Andy Rooney on a bender, and rant and rave about how people are ruining my favorite holiday, Halloween. My usual favorite topics are the ever amusing Chick Tracts that people have the audacity to give to my children with their fun sized bags of M&Ms (check out the new one for this year, The Walking Dead!), cities that postpone or worse yet cancel their trick or treating because of religious pressures or Halloween falling on a Monday, and ANYONE who holds a Trunk or Treat in a church parking lot to help save their spawn from the horrors of the Pagan holiday. So far the airwaves have been pretty quiet, so I will just repost my post from 2009, and keep an eye on this space for any future developments ;)

It's that time of year again...
When families are faced with the choice, to celebrate or not celebrate Halloween. Personally, I am sure all of you know, I not only celebrate Halloween, I revel in it! I LOVE Halloween, and would prefer to get rid of Christmas and Thanksgiving all together ;)

But I swear, the more I read people's arguments on why to NOT celebrate Halloween, I am filled with a dread that I can't shake. Are people really so paranoid of a holiday that PartyWorks and Hershey's have so corrupted from it's original form, that it is barely recognizable?? I understand the not wanting to expose your children to excessive blood and gore, okay, I get that. But to not even let them dress up and trick or treat?? Or worse yet, to be a TOTAL hypocrite and let them go to a trunk or treat at the local church. If they are trunk or treating, you are celebrating, so get over yourselves.

Let me give you a few thoughts to ponder. First off, if you have EVER gotten your information about Halloween from a Chick Tract, then please, click away from my page now and go and pray or something, cause you are too stupid to continue reading.

First off, Halloween started out as a harvest holiday known as Samhain. Now contrary to popular Christian belief, there was NEVER a pagan god known as Samhain. Samhain is derived from the Celtic word for Summer's End, cause DUH! it happened at the end of summer, LOL! So, no pagan god Samhain, and therefore no human sacrifices to him. Also, pagan's don't believe in Satan, and they sure don't worship him, cause he's NON-EXISTENT in pagan culture. So, no human sacrifice to him either. In fact, there is NO human sacrifice in paganism today, AT ALL! And if you look at history, Christians have killed many, many more humans then any pagans, I'm just sayin...

Secondly, the whole idea of poisoned, tampered with, or booby trapped candy. This is a myth that has been blown so far out of proportion, it's absurd! TWO, yes TWO cases of children being killed by Halloween candy have been recorded in the news since 1964 (yep, that was 44 years ago people). The first was a boy in 1970 who ate his uncles stash of heroin, and then the family tried to cover it up by saying the drugs were in his Halloween candy. The second, in 1974, a boy ate a pixy stick that was laced with poison. Upon investigation it turned out the boys own father planted the candy in his sons bag, to collect on the boys insurance money. NEVER has there been a recorded incident of a stranger handing out laced, tampered with or poison treats on Halloween, and contrary to the Chick tract above, it is not common practice to do this to harvest sacrifices for Satan!

So, while I can go on and on about the non-horrors of Halloween, I do want to make a point. These days, Halloween is another hallmark holiday, cleansed of all it's original roots, and make palatable to the masses. If you are a family who chooses to NOT celebrate Halloween because of it's pagan roots, then I recommend you think twice about Easter and Christmas too. Because while the historical activities attributed to those holidays, namely the birth of Christ and his resurrection, are widely accepted as accurate, the actual dates of said activities and the celebrating of those holidays are NOT specifically condoned in the bible. Shockingly the dates and MOST of the activities now celebrated for those holidays are in fact PAGAN in origin ;) Christmas trees or Easter bunnies anyone??

I will accept reasonable discussion of this topic in my comments. BUT keep in mind, any argument you make to me that uses God or the Bible as it's basis, will be countered with the teachings of the ALL POWERFUL AND KNOWING SQUIRREL IN MY BACK YARD :) After of course, the appropriate offerings of nuts and seeds are made ;)

I updated my blog for Halloween, caught up on my Get Off your Broom Witchy Fitness Challege, and started my Halloween blogging chores :) Also, one of my favorite things is to change my Facebook icon as many times as possible to various witchy pics. So I have been hunting down new ones to add to my folder :)

So this is going to just be a quick post, just an update, and a glimpse of what I hope to share with y'all this Halloween season :)
October traditionally for us has been a great month. Finally the oppressive heat of summer has left the valley, and the cooler weather of fall are usually moved in. A shift from frappuccino to hot coffee, more hot cocoa and less ice cream. Fall is by far my favorite time of the year, and I can't wait to get pumpkins, watch leaves changing and generally enjoy all that fall has to offer ;) Also traditionally around here, October is a month of fun field trips, keep your eye out for our reports both from The Big Fresno Fair, and The Monterey Bay Aquarium!

Now, I can honestly say I have only read 4 of the books on last years list (one of which I am sorry that I did, can you guess which one?). But #3 is one of my all time favorite books, and I have read it probably 10+ times, does that count?

My point isn't a look what I read post, I do those all the time :) This is much, much more then that. It's a wake up call. It's me trying to grab people by the virtual shoulders and shake them awake!

WAKE UP MAN!

It starts with little innocent things, like, hey, we really don't want our kids to read "And Tango Makes Three," because it makes us uncomfortable, it makes us have to think or deal with subjects that we'd rather just ignore. So yeah, that's just fine if they take that out of the library. Less work for us to pay attention to what our kids are reading, if we let "them" decided what can be in the library. Right?

Yep, less work for parents if they let someone else decide what their kids can read, and why not let them decide what they can watch on TV or in movies, what music they can listen to as well. A whole committee can be made to decided what is appropriate for your children, so you don't have to think about it. Makes your job so much easier right?

The problem with that is, it's NO ONE ELSE'S BUSINESS what is appropriate for my child to read, see or hear. That's part of my job as a parent. And as soon as I let someone else start making those decisions for my kids, who's to stop them from making them for me?

What about the adult titles on that list? Are you okay with those being removed from public libraries? Are you okay with someone telling you what you can read? That is the next step, their goal, you know? They want to CONTROL what you can read. And once they have that, what's to stop them from controlling what you watch and what you hear?

I am not saying that all of this is a slippery slope to Big Brother. What I am saying is that you can't just not think about it. You can't just not act, when things like this are happening. It's the people that stop thinking about these little things and stop acting that allow the big things to happen.

Tolerance vs acceptance, and why the status quo is not good enough in my opinion..

tol·er·ance Noun/ˈtälərəns/ 1. The ability or willingness to tolerate something, in particular the existence of opinions or behavior that one does not necessarily agree with: "religious tolerance".

ac·cept·ance Noun /akˈseptəns/ 1. the state of being acceptable and accepted

Can you see the difference in these two words? Tolerance has a negative connotation, in that the person being tolerant has the option to decide if your behavior is acceptable or not. With a few exceptions, pedophilia, murder and such, it's not my place to decide if your life/choices is acceptable. It is my place to love what is lovable in you, and accept that your life/choices are different then mine, and that's okay. Assuming that your life/choices are not causing pain or suffering to others, and are not illegal (with some exceptions), I would hope that I would do all I can to accept you as you are. I don't want to just tolerate a person, just because they are different then I am. It seems to be doing them and the world a large disservice for me to assume because I don't agree with their choices that it's okay for me to just tolerate them, they way one tolerates hot weather or avocados.

I know I am not perfect and I am sure that anyone reading this blog can point to instances where I have not only not accepted another's behavior, I have flat out condemned. But I think (racking my brain for examples) all of those times, their behavior was causing pain and/or suffering to another human being or living thing. I do not tolerate causing other pain, and I will in every occasion I can, speak out against it. Even in those instances where the person causing the pain/suffering feels that they were acting justly and with in their rights. But, I would hope, that even if I condemn a specific action or choice, that I would still make an effort to find what is lovable.

As long as we have tolerance as a goal, and not acceptance, then we will always have hate. Because one can tolerate something they hate, when forced to in a school situation or work. The undercurrent will always be negative, because haters know they can fake tolerance. To be truly accepting of someone, it's difficult to hold hate towards them at the same time. It's harder to fake acceptance.

My new Homeschool binder

This is the year I get organized!! I gotta, two kids means twice as much paper!! So I wanted to share my Homeschool binder with y'all :D excuse my camera phone pictures.

I need to work on the cover. For now, just Timmy all alone on there...

Weekly work folders, where I file worksheets needed for the week. One for each day, all Alice in Wonderland.

Inside of weekly work folders, Jack on left/Danielle on right.

Various important papers, such as school calendars.

Lesson plans

And last, completed work folders. Only work from the current period is filed here. Once we've done period reports, all work will get filed in a box till the end of the year :)

My plan is to keep the binder current, lesson plan on Sunday and try to stick to the plan :D

It's Back to School Day at Gist Academy!

Yes, summer is now officially over (someone tell Kopi!) and school has started again.

Jack-Jack is officially a kindergartner and Danielle is in 4th.

We started our school day as we usually do, after lunch. Jack-Jack needed a little direction on how to complete a worksheet, he kept trying to match things in other rows LOL!

Bwhahahahahaha!!

Well, really, as a cost cutting measure we invested in a pair of clippers to cut the boys hair. I thought, "how hard can it be?"

As you can see, Jack was way over due for a cut. He was NOT excited to have mom cut his hair, but once we set up the laptop with construction videos he was more willing.

Sadly we thought of the mohawk too late. It was uneven, but funny for a moment :)

Dad helped me get the line in back straight.

He wasn't too happy at the end (took too long to fix sideburns for his taste) but all in all he looks okay. One more haircut and the clippers will have paid for themselves!

2011-2012 Curriculum Choices

I will have to come back and update this as more pieces fall into place. But I will get it started for others who may be blog cruising to find out what kinds of fun stuff other homeschoolers are using. You do that, right? It's not just me?

Danielle, 4th Grade

Language Arts/Social Studies ~ This year we are continuing with Moving Beyond the Page, 7-9. Danielle was very successful with it last year, and enjoyed it very much. We are also using GUM, Grammar, Usage and Mechanics for grammar this year, I just didn't have the $$ to pay for Growing with Grammar again this year.

Science ~ Real Science Odyssey, Chemistry Level 1. Last year we finished the Life Science and the Earth and Space books from the same series. Danielle and I both really enjoyed the work, there was exactly the right amount of reading, plus LOTS of a great hands on experiences for her. I just hope that there are a few Level 2 books for us to move on to when the time comes, right now it seems they only have Biology and even that is listed as Coming Soon :( I am going to try to slow us down a bit on Science this year, as we went through two years worth of lessons last year.

Math ~ Harcourt Math 4th Grade, again state standard math, it works for us!

Plus I am adding California History, as 4th grade is traditionally when we do that. We are using California Early History/Grade 4, and it looks like it will be fun!

Jack, Kindergarten

Language Arts ~ Jack is going to be using Sing, Spell, Read and Write : Kindergarten Level 1 Combo Kit plus Get Ready for the Code - Book a.

Science, math and Social Studies are state standard, and exactly the same books Danielle used when she was in Kindergarten!
