Paris Abounds in Color and Fashion

The following description caught my mind while net surfing a few months ago......." The Left Bank Tour is for women who enjoy design, fashion, textiles and art and who want to explore and encounter the magic of Paris with a designer's eye." With few second thoughts, I was on my way to Paris with Marcy and Kathryn Tilton, textile designers.

My first impressions of Paris architecture and public art thrilled me - beautiful Gothic style buildings and sculptures of 18th and 19th Centuries were everywhere: the Louvre , formerly an immense palace along the Seine now houses the world's most visited museum. Stained glass and bas relief wonders of Notre Dame Cathedral capture the imagination. Napoleon's Arc de Triomphe dominates the city's core from whose center radiates graceful tree-lined boulevards including the Champs De Elysee, Boulevard Voltaire, and Avenue de President Kennedy.

Contemporary art deco sites gave color to the Paris sky line as well: Centre Pompidou (houses France's contemporary art museum), the new Quai Branley Museum provides a global ethnographic art tour. and the Parc Villette exposition and music performance centers.

Even the dead can appreciate art and beauty. Cementaire du Pere Lachaise in Paris, the most visited cemetery in the world, is a treasure of elegant tombs of world renown artists, musicians, scientists, political leaders: Chopin, Moliere, Oscar Wilde, Edith Piaf are some of the million memorials here.

What I loved most about Paris was our charming neighborhood called St Germain des Pres, west of the Latin Quarter, on the Left Bank. I will never forget the organ concert on Sunday morning in the St Sulpice Cathedral.

Within a short walking distance of our small hotel, was the immense Luxembourg Garden filled with handsome sculptures, children's play areas, puppet theater, museum, tennis courts, bee hives, petanque courts ( similar to bocce ball) chess tables...We enjoyed eating a light sack lunch and watching the locals enjoy their leisure.

Speaking of restaurants...there were dozens within a fifteen minute walk from our hotel. To name a few favorites: Chez Fernand, Cepe Figure, La Boussole, Chez Rene St Germaine de Pres, L'enfance de Lard, and Jazz Club Chez Papa...

Haute couteur and fashion design is well and living in Paris today

The exhibition of Jean Paul Gaultier at the Grand Palais. He was considered "the terrible infant of fashion" by the press since his first shows in the 70's. He found inspiration in less conventional sources: dandies in bowler hats meet tattooed punks in Trafalgar Square, classicism and the spirit of rebellion, feathers, boas and frilly cancan style with leather, jeans, and plaid fabrics. He designed Madonna's cone breast outfit! I loved the vibrancy of his style and his open vision of society with its madness, sensitivity, humor and irreverence in which everyone can declare himself as he wishes.

Fashion designer Yves Saint Laurent's collection located in his former couture house contains several thousand garments as well as thousands of graphic and photographic references. Laurent (1936-2008) was best known as an influential European fashion designer who impacted fashion the the 1960's to present day. He is often credited with rendering ready-to-wear credible. Learning about his work style, from creating designs to final production, was fascinating.

The Jeanne Lanvin (1867-1946) exhibition at the Palais Galliera features over a hundred models from the time Mademoiselle Jeanne began her career as a milliner in 1885 to the time she opened her shop, Lanvin, at age 16. She is credited with developing the oldest fashion house still in operation. At one time her label employed more than 1000 workers. I was inspired by her creative uses of exotic ethnic fabrics and original designs throughout the collection.

Other Artists

The mural of Monet's Nympheas was the most inspirational art experience of my life. The walls or Jardin des Tuileries of the Musee National de L'Orangerie is covered with his totally sensitive rendering of gracefull water lilies luxuriating in a peaceful pond.

My Favorite Monet

Musee d'Orsay featured impressionist, Pierre Bonnard. The vibrancy of his colors, particularly yellow, seem to convey Arabian nights brillance.

Gustav Klimpt and his group of Viennese intellectuals were featured at the Pinacotheque de Paris. Of interest were ersonal details and paintings of the development of Viennese art at the end of the 19th Century. Klimpt's golden Judith and his gigantic Beethoven Frieze were amazing.

You are guaranteed to enjoy this stunning and neat city with its colonial architecture, cobblestone streets (no street lights), and striking light. The sweet people, classy accommodations, variety of restaurants and lovely parks are absolutely delightful. One notices many foreign retirees (mostly Yankees) who live here to enjoy the wonderful year round climate (6500 ft altitude), artistic spirit, and beauty of San Miguel.

We stayed in a centrally located B&B managed by a mother and chef/son from Valencia, Spain. The warm family atmosphere and beautifully prepared food kept us enchanted throughout our stay. Within a few blocks were many other excellent restaurants featuring dishes of diverse ethnic origins.

Who Wants a Basket?

The heart of the city is its principal plaza called El Jardin located beside El Parroquia, the large church. You will love hanging out there in one of the delightful eateries and feel the spirit of San Miguel.

You will want to visit the Museo de San Miguel near El Parroquia to learn about the life of San Miguel Allende and his role in Mexico's independence from Spain in 1810 . We learned that Miguel de Allende played a critical role in initiating the drive for Mexican independence which resulted in his execution by the Spanish. Upon Mexican independence in 1821, he was recognized as a martyr and the town was renamed San Miguel de Allende.

A visit to the Escuela de Bellas Artes is another treasure. Originally the building was the monastery for the La Concepcion church. In 1938 it was converted into a fine arts school in 1938 and still offers classes. David Siquieros, the gifted Mexican muralist, was invited to teach art classes here and left monolithic unfinished mural- totally amazing. You are left wondering what was Siquieros thinking.

San Miguel is filled with dozens of 18th Century temples and chapels of diverse architectural design: baroque, churrigueresque, and indigenous influence.

What amazed me most was the incredible variety of arts and crafts throughout San Miguel. I learned that the early Spanish administration founded the town to provide all the basic needs (home furnishings, church needs, clothing items, etc) for the mine workers living in the nearby towns of Queretero and Guanajuato. And today, the residents of San Miguel continue making their beautiful creations which travel to all parts of the world.

GOLDEN BAGAN

Arrival at the Umbra Hotel in Bagan area after a 45 minute flight from Mandalay, We rented electric motorbike and began the exploration of more than 4000 pagodas and stupas. Dating back to the 12th Century. With thousands of temples, pagodas, ordination halls, it was extremely confusing figuring out where to begin our adventure! The three structures included here were some of our favorites.

This early center of Burmese power built superb temples of brick and decorated inside with frescos and topped with gilded pinnacles combining Hindu and Buddhist images with colorful local nats (spirits). Some historians believe that there were 55 kings who ruled Bagan beginning with the rule of King Anawrahta in 1044 AD. He is considered the ruler who established Theravada Buddhism among his royalty and population.

The Upali Thein Ordination Hall dates from the 13th Century. It is said to have been built by a monk named Upali to commemorate King Narapatisithu choosing an heir from his 5 sons . There is a circle and star frescoe on ceiling and other wonderful frescoes of daily Bagan life (painted in 18th Century) that we were not allowed to photograph.

ANANDA TEMPLE

Ananda Temple-- 1090-1105 ...One of the most loved and largest of all Bagan. It illustrates the stylistic end of the early Bagan period. In 1990 the temple spires were guilded on its 900th anniversary. Glorious huge teak doors, Exterior includes more than 500 glazed tiles of Jataka scenes (stories of Buddha's reincarnation). Inside the inner cube are 31 foot buddhas and two lacquer statues who are to represent King Kyanzittha and Shin Arahan,the monk who initiated King Anawhrata to Theravada Buddhism. Lovely spires throughout...

Shwezigon Temple -- 1102 .... Gold covered dome rising out of three rising terraces is located in Nuang U. Rocks used to build the pagoda were passed along devotees standing for six miles!

Inside the pagoda compound are images of 37 nats (spirits) to whom many Buddhists still pray. These are the pre-Budhhist (animist) spirits that were officially endorsed by a Buddhist monarchy in a compromising gesture towards a public reluctant to endorse Buddhism.

I loved one of the Shwezigon Pavilions with wood carved figures relating stories of the Jataka (detailing the past lives of Buddha), the Ramayama, and a folktale about two characters nemed Hti Lat and Po On.

My favorite Bagan buildings were the Upali Thein ordination hall for its wall frescoes and the Ananda Temple with its glorious large style, magnificently decorated teak doors, and charming carved tiles illustrating Bagan culture.

Our 3 day Bagan visit was a delight and the e-bike transportation was so convenient. Afternoon swims at the beautiful Umbra Hotel pool helped us deal with the heat. Dinners at Queens restaurant nearby and 6 am walks to catch the pagodas at sunrise were beautiful.

Good-bye Bagan and Burma. What a diverse experience. I so appreciated the generosity and kindness of the people of Burma. We loved the journey. Glad to have you share the land and people with us.

9. BURMA: MANDALAY

A two hour taxi drive to Mandalay from Pyin Oo Lwin was nerve-wracking on the narrow, shoulder-less road filled with hundreds of huge cargo trucks. Finding a clean light-filled room in the Royal City Hotel was delightful.

Mandalay was once the magnificent royal city of the Myanmar kings. The Palace was located inside the 2.5 kilometer square Mandalay Fort, ringed by a 230 foot wide moat and 26 feet high walls of deep red-brown stone. In 1885 the British ejected thee Burmese elite and deported King Thibaw, then demolished part of the royal city to create a parade ground and complex for their governor.

Kuthodaw Pagoda was our first outing in Mandalay. It is known for having the longest book in the world, which is located within these small white stupas. What impressed me most was the sound of beautiful chanting by many young people who were standing under a huge banyan or holy tree.

Mandalay Hill is a major view-point and requires either a 45 minute barefoot climb or a taxi ride to arrive at the escalator for the Shwenandaw Monastery. There are also elegant monasteries and an Ordination Hall nearby (built for a former king). Many dedicated Buddhists make the hillside climb in bare feet. We climbed the hill in taxi and then took an escalator to the pagoda.

Carved out of teak wood in the 1880's, this temple monastery was surrounded by glass mosaic pillars, many of which are now being replaced by contributions. The view of pancake flat Mandalay is excellent on a clear day.

Mandalay has always has a reputation for outstanding craftsmanship. Here it is possible to visit gold pounders and watch how gold leaf is crarfted out of gold fragments. Other craft shops to visit include: gold embroidery, fabric murals, laquerware art, puppet crafts and of course, weaving.

My special interest was to visit the many busy looms clicking and clacking away weaving the traditional Myanmar silk pattern designs. Amanapura has been a weaving center for hundreds of years and many small family weaving businesses are producing colorful fabric for the coveted longyi (wrap around skirts that most women wear).

For years there were only about three designs for the traditional silk longyis (sarongs) of the Burmese . Nowadays these weavers work hard to come up with new designs for the new season starting in October.

A change in worlds describes the green garden town of Pyin Oo Lwin. Formerly a cool refreshing hill station for British administrators during hot spells, it is still a verdant delight today. Our lovely garden setting residence was the Royal Parkview Hotel, located next to the well manicured National Kandawgyi Gardens

Begun during the British occupancy in 1924, this 435-acre botanical garden features more than 480 species of flowers, shrubs, and trees many annotated with their scientific nomenclature in Latin, The maintenance continues today as you can see .

Hsipaw is the Most Northern Site

Landing at the Lashio airport, we shared a taxi ride to Hsipaw, an agricultural town of about 30,000 people. The town is known as the taking off town for village treks. It also was once a Shan royal city and former princedom. Historians claim that a 19th-century prince Sao So Chae was knighted by Queen Victoria.

Since we had only two full days in Hsipaw, we immediately made arrangements for our village treks and regional visits for the next days. Mr. Charles Guest House, our friendly lodging, efficiently helped us arrange everything.

Initially, Hsipaw disappointed us and we could not understand why travel books gave it such positive ratings. Our first walk along main street to find a something to eat required considerable mindfulness as we competed with heavily laden trucks and motorcycles flying by on the rough narrow roadway in the dark. There were so few lights in the whole town. We later found out that Hsipaw, located close to the Chinese border, is a trade gateway.

The next morning we joined fellow travelers and our guide, Mr. Bean, for a day's journey up the river by boat, a short trek to a mountain monastery, returning via a Shan village visit. En route to the monastery we passed through fields of pineapple, mango, papaya, carrots, grapefruit, orange, teak, corn, coconut, coffee, rice, plum, and beautiful banyan trees. The rich soil, temperature, and water availability allows a great variety of produce in this area.

We so enjoyed visiting the very isolated monastery which was charming in its simplicity. There were many young noviciates there and learned that throughout Burma, most Buddhists send their 7-8 year old boys to a monastery where they spend 7-10 days in training with senior monks. It seems to provide a unique experience and education for boys who live in these very isolated regions.

After listening to the daily chanting of the noviciates, we were treated us to a cup of tea and a plate of delicious fresh pineapple. Walking around the monastery we observed the novitiates wash their clothes and dishes as well as repair their bicycles. It is a wonderful learning opportunity for these young men.

Clean and attractive describes the small Shan village located on a tributary of the wide Ayeyarway Tributary. I kept thinking that this Shan village life is so similar to the Dai of Xishuangbanna in Yunnan Province, China, just north of Burma. Then I learned that these people are closely related and are in the same language group.

These villagers are most fortunate to be located on the Mandalay to Lashio train route, built during WWII, thus providing convenient transportation for regional marketing.

Hsipaw is definitely a great place to visit for many unique experiences, especially multi-day trekking to visit a unique village way of life.

6. Burma - Beautiful Inle Lake, Shan State, Burma or Myanmar

Inle Lake is Southwest of Kentung

Located in the middle of Shan State, Inle Lake (about 20 miles long) is surrounded by tree covered hills, stilt-house villages, floating gardens ((hydroponic), and pagodas. Unfortunately, its beauty and charm is drawing hundreds of people daily from all over the world, causing an explosion on its resources. I wonder about the future here.

In addition to the surge of tourism, other Income sources in the lake area include fishing, farming (raising vegetables on the floating gardens (hydroponic) weaving cotton, silk, and lotus fiber, and gold and silver smithing.

Boats are the main source of transportation. We loved exploring the many village markets around the lake in a motorized teak long boat style canoe and watching the graceful local Inthar fishermen leg rowing their flat bottom skiffs - one leg is wrapped around their paddle to drive the blade through the water in a graceful snake-like motion. Thus. their hands are free to manage the nets and the standing position while rowing enables them to see fish better and place their nets.

Buddhist Temple and Monastery on Inle Lake

The dominant ethnic group of the lake region is the Inthar who are Buddhists and there is a shrine in most households as well as golden pagodas everywhere. Like all Buddhists in Myanmar, it is essential for males to enter the monkhood at some period of their lives with the idea of gaining merit toward attaining the enlightened state of Nirvanna. Most Inthar first join the novicehood for a short period when they are 5, then another short period when they are 20.

In addition to the Inthar people, another ethnic group visible in the markets is the Pa Oh people who are distinguished by their black tunic tops with slight touches of red embroidery, black skirts, and colorfully wrapped wool head scarves. The Shan people also have a major role in their Shan state.

Of the 25 regional villages that share the 5 day market rotation around Inle Lake, we visited Mingala market in Nyaungshwe, Than Taung (in southern area of lake), In Thaw Khone (famous for weaving lotus plant), the lovely village of Inthein, and Shan state capital, Taunggye.

Aquarius Lake Inn Guest House is our home in Nyaungshwe, located at the north end of Inle Lake. It's a great place to exchange travel tips and help from capable staff and fellow voyagers. Every afternoon after our daily exploring they offer fruit and tea.

Buddhist monks and nuns are visible everywhere in Nyuangshwe and their chanting lends a peaceful sound to this world.

Food is most nutritional with an abundance of restaurants along every street. Wonderful tropical fruit: papaya, avocado, oranges, melons, coconuts. A popular salad is made of pickled tea leaves with roasted nuts, beans, sesame, chillies, and lime. Spicy soups of fish, chicken, water buffalo, beef and mild curries are delicious as well as hot and sour choices.
A good noodle dish, called Mohinga, consists of thin sliced noodles eaten with a fish broth cooked with lots of lemongrass and slices of the inner banana stem for crunch. Lucky Star and Green Chili restaurants have been our favorites in Nyaungshwe.

Kengtung (city - 50,000 population. district - 170,000), is located in the heart of the Golden Triangle in the far eastern region of Burma touching Thailand. For centuries it was an important commercial link between China and Siam. After WW II the Burmese military took control and the region endured strong Burmanization and it became part of Shan State.

Today, it is still relatively remote, with 2 or 3 traffic lights, limited paved roads, and few people speaking Burmese. Many speaking Shan or one of the ethnic groups' languages.

Roadways are filled with motorcycles and tuk tuks.

Kengtung is surrounded by many hill towns of different ethnic groups: Wa, Aeng, Shan, Akha, Lahu, Palaung, Padaung, Aku, and others.

1. PIN TAUK Village - Lahu ethnic group. The village was very well maintained and so clean. Unfortunately, most of the residents were out in their fields, harvesting rice.

Northeast of Kengtung we stop at a Thai Khun rice wine village to see a massive saki (rice whiskey) distillery operation. We are told that it is a very profitable and deals only in the export market.

We climbed to 5000 feet altitude to visit this village of tea and fruit producers. Their unique style of multiple families living in longhouses made us think of our Native American longhouses.

We visited one occupied by 7 families with total occupancy of 50-60. Inside each family has its own cooking, sleeping, and storage area. There is no outlet for their cooking fires and smoke fills the building. The construction of teak and fine thatch is beautiful. Woven mats cover the floors and are tastefully placed. Presently, there is no school for children. It is difficult to find a teacher who will stay in this isolated region.

It was difficult driving up this red clay roadway but worth the views and seeing fields of newly planted apple trees, all managed by a Kengtung monk.

There are three neighboring Akha villages situated in this area. Interesting to note that they are of three different religious beliefs: Buddhism, Animisin, and Catholicism.

We were warmly welcomed by those residents not involved in harvesting rice. We enjoyed tea, peanuts, and sake with the chairman's wife who was quick to show us her display of Akha fabric items for sale. The Akha women are fairly active fabric marketers.

My special treat was to see up close the Akha costumes and learn about their colorful hats. Each village has its own variation and the villagers are known by the hat variation. Most women are wearing heirloom hats given to them by family members and carry valuable coins and beads. Thus, continual wearing day and night keeps them secure. They only take the hats off to wash their hair.

These villages have electricity, a central well, and an elementary school nearby. Nevertheless, girls still have many children, which seems to carry good fortune for the village.

The trek to the mountain top village of Pang Pac to visit Lahu Shi ethnic people will be with me forever. 12 kilometers uphill on slippery muddy clay paths and streams in the rain!

We departed our hotel in the morning mist at 8 am to purchase lunch items of rice with vegetables, oranges. bananas and water in the Kengtung market. As mist turned to rain we began our trek across fields of rice with the ever present water buffalo in the fields. It was tough jumping on rocks across small streams, maneuvering the wet steep clay trail as we neared the mountain top. As we passed the Lahu Shi spirit dwelling areas, I thanked the spirits for their help along the trail.

Climbing in this muck, I began to wonder how people could endure an entire lifetime in such difficult circumstances, no electricity, schools, piped water, or telephones. Finally we arrived at the 3500 feet level altitude with towering pine trees and the Pang Pac village.

In spite of the downpour, we were met by many children, soaked to the skin and barefoot. Since few outsiders make it into their village, our arrival was a special event.

We were invited by the chief's friend into a village home. Taking off our wet shoes and climbing a short ladder, we sat around the coimforting fire in the modest living area and learned that the Lahu-shi population is about 100 who live in 22 houses of bamboo. Their self-subsistence lives are based on rice cultivation and hunting wild game. We heard that in former times they were known as the hunters of tigers.

Chidren begin working with their parents when very young and being that schools are so distant, nobody can read or write in the village.

Village highlights are the festivals of their animist beliefs and paying homage to the special spirits. The Pang Pac wear a traditional dress consisting of turquoise blue longyi skirts (sarongs), white blouses, big earrings, and colorful necklaces.

After sharing a glass of tea and our mixed nuts and staring at each other for a while, we headed down the steep slippery path for more than three hours to reach the car. Two walking sticks were a gift of support for managing the treacherous slippery path. Seven hours of a muddy journey convinced me that Pang Pac life is not for me.

Sliding in mud down the hill to the car, we traveled to Wan Si, an Aker village with a welcoming committee of pipe smoking senior women offering us simple strung beaded necklaces for 1,000 kyats each ( $1). These women have been the most aggressive people we have met in the country so far. I was delighted to buy one from every woman.

Their ethnic wear was comprised of woven black hats and jackets with red stripped longyi. Their large earrings and beaded necklaces provided the color.

It seems that most of the able village people were in the paddies harvesting the rice.

There are so many more stories to tell: the Silver Padaung People, Kala People, Wa People, Aeng Holoung People......but, I'm sure that you have an idea of the diverse life styles, and challenges they all encounter.

After a 42 hour door to door flight (Yakima, Washington to Yangon, Burma), we land in the former capital city and commercial center, Yangon.

First impressions: 100% humidity, 90's, torrential storm, no evidence of armed military yet, and people everywhere.

There are over six million people living in Yangon (census has not been taken for 39 years, due for a new one soon). In spite of the congested streets, limited designated walk ways, and the heat, most people are extremely helpful and kind. We particularly appreciated the wonderful support at our guest house, Motherland Inn II.

National Museum, treasure house of historic royal gold items, gemstones, and Bagan prehistory. The top floor with a superior display of 70 fully dressed ethnic costumes (male and female) and village artifacts (looms, etc) was the most fascinating.

Shwedagon Paya (Pagoda) - this huge stupa glitters bright gold leaf and jewels from every corner of city, 2500 years old, rebuilt many times. It is the most sacred of all Burma's Buddhists' sites. Burmese follow the Theravada tradition of Buddhism.

After taking off shoes and socks at one of the four entries, you begin climbing the stairs, which are lined with a series of shops where devotees and visitors buy flowers, ceremonial paper umbrellas, books, incense sticks, and even antiques for the pagoda visit.

As you emerge from the covered entry you see that Shwedagon is more than just one huge gold and jewel-covered stupa. All around it is a technicolor glitter of smaller stupas, temples, shrines, images, and small pavilions.

The devotees walk clockwise in a meditative mode around the main stupa on a mat pathway (so their feet don't burn from the marble surface). We noted that many people stopped to worship at specific shrines along the walk. These spots were planetary posts representing the days of the week. Here you can offer prayers and care for your own day of birth shrine.

Shwedagon has a long fascinating history. One episode that I appreciate describes a strong Queen Shinsawbu of 1400's who made significant developments and improvements to the pagoda by giving her weight in gold (88 lbs), thus beginning the tradition of gold leaf donations.

In 2007 it was the center for monks protesting military government.

Other activities and observations:

Botataung Paya, another of dozens of pagodas, is a sharp contrast to the massive Shwedagon. It is located in a sketchy neighborhood and exhibits significant deferred maintenance showing less financial support.

The lovely Strand Hotel (colonial British built) is perfect for a cup of tea and quiet. Staying there would be delightful, but $600 a night might close the bank.

There are many choices for delicious food in Yangon, Two of our favorite restaurants were Meet Mayanmar (near the National Museum) and the wharf side Junior Duck. Menus always include many varieties of seafood preparations, vegetable stir fry in all kinds of hot and sour sauces, delicious hot and spicy fish, hardy noodle soups, and fresh delicious tropical fruits: papaya, banana, pineapple, melons....

As we walked around the city, I was on the lookout for colorful ethnic tribal traditional dress. Many people, especially the younger set, were wearing western pants and shirts. Older women and men were often wearing the traditional Burmese longyi or sarong. Alas! no village outfits at all!

Visiting the hundreds of isolated ethnic villages throughout the country would be the way to view the colorful, hand-woven and embroidered textiles of these unique people....So on to Kengtung of the Golden Triangle to find and visit the Akha, Aeng, Lahu, Lishu, Padaung, Palaung.......

More questions followed as I looked at the unending list of must dos before departure.

Do I really want to leave our comfy setting in Yakima for the unknowns that we will face each day on our trip? Will I be able to connect with those fiber artisans and visit their tribal villages.? 135 distinct ethnic races creates great confusion for me as I try to study their locations, lifestyles and art wear. The multitude of names for all the tribes, their sub groups, and locations is rather overwhelming as well.

Did Lewis and Clark or Christopher Colunbus feel that way too. They didn't even have the Lonely Planet Guide Book as a reference!

I do realize that much of Burma is changing fast....and the village life too. Tourism is swamping the country. Yes, I want to be there soon!

I have decided to write some of my dreams and goals for the journey...and am begin to move into the Burma world.

Kengtung in the east of Burma and near Thailand is going to be our best connect with the villagers and fiber women. Its rugged terrain to its sense of isolation and most tourists just don't visit it. Thus, this is my area of fiber focus. Here, near Kengtung, we will be able to trek in the Shan highlands to villages of Tai Lu, Tai Khun, Tai Nuea, Akha, and Lahu villages. I have decided this is sufficient to study in some depth for our journey. Fortunately, I am somewhat familiary with the incredible supplementary warp weaving of the Thai Nuea from our time in Thailand and I love the mastser pieces and beauty of their work.

Also, the Akhas and their incredible head dresses have always inspired me. One observer, Jim Goldman, commented several decades ago "that the Akha view of art is something one wears... I totally agree.

I am now feeling better about our journey and will continue to proceed preparations with energy.

Soon we will be laughing with these women from a tribal village near Kengtung, Shan State, Burma/ Myanmar.

We will learn just which ethnic group they belong to. They could be the Akha, Shan, Wa, Eng or even belong to several Thai ethnic groups ( Tai Kuhn, Tai Nuea, Tai Lu).....I am ready for exploration.

Many travelers say that Kengtung is one of the most attractive towns in Burma/Myanmar and its way of life has changed little over the centuries. In terms of culture, it feels closer to the hill towns of northern Thailand and southern China and the tribal people follow a way of life that has changed little in centuries.

The city of Kengtung, the capital of the Golden Triangle region, is where Myanmar, China, Laos, and Thailand battled for control of the opium trade for most of the last century.

My Adventure With Stripes

Too Many Stripes For Me.....

This year is the year of black and white fabric stripes. Everywhere I go I see people wearing every kind of garment with that jailbird color combo. I always wonder how and where those fads begin. Wouldn't it be fun to start a new trend?

And, I became convinced that I wanted to make my own black and white stripe creation. When I saw the Marcy Tilton knit pants pattern shown above, I knew that was for me.

I knew that selecting the right fit would be critical to the appearance. So, I carefully measured the basic pattern pieces of the pants with some of my best fitted pants. And I was fortunate to adjust the pattern pieces for a fine fit.

Starting to cut out the many pieces for the side decor with pockets and trims, I found myself getting very dizzy trying to decide the correct direction for those 4 or 5 little pieces.

Too Many Stripes for Me

Then trying to match the stripes with all those connecting seams was another challenging operation. Somehow, with the luck of the Irish, the stripes all seemed to flow well together.

Look At All Those Pieces to Try to Fit Together!

I loved the look of the waist band with the fitted smooth front pieces and the fuller gathered back. Putting it together was less complex than I had thought. Inserting the elastic band in the back was a clever technique.

Finally it all came together, miraculously and the fit is fantastic. There was help from a greater spirit somewhere that helped me throughout the creation. Thank you Great Spirit................

On to Bucerias to a family celebration of our 50 years of marriage with children and grandchildren. We were somewhat anxious upon arrival because we had made all lodging arrangements online (6 months earlier). We hoped the location and comfort would be suitable for all.

Located in the outskirts of Puerto Vallarta, Bucerias is a warm water beach location with time-share, condominium, and hotel haven for mostly Canadians, North Americans, and many Mexicans. The beaches are lovely, the town area is filled with boutiques and art, the pace is leisurely, and the weather in December, January, February is marvelous.

It was incredible - a beautiful Mexican art filled home with 7 beautiful bedrooms and bathrooms to match, a lovely pool setting, and a a convenient kitchen. Included were all the beach toys anyone needs: a kayak, surf boards, beach balls.....

The 5 children, ranging in age from 5 to 12 years were ecstatic with the warm water of the ocean and the pool. We filled our days with swimming activities, kayaking, beach architecture, Old Maid, Loteria (Mexican Bingo), talent shows, and lots of drama.

A major highlight was sailboating in the Bay of Banderas to the nearby Marieta Islands. En route we watched humpback whales breaching and playing around our boat. Arriving at the Marietas, we put on snorkeling equipment and swam among many schools of fish, coral, colorful eels. Then we proceeded to swim through a dark cave which opened onto a sandy beach area. If that wasn't a great adventure...for all of us. It was a fabulous day ending with a hearty lunch aboard the sailboat.

A Beautiful Retreat

OUR PRIVATE BEACH VILLAGE

Travel to Chacala via TAP bus company, is an eight hour journey through a diverse countryside of jungles, mountains and highlands with fields of sugarcane, mango and papaya trees, Brahma cattle, Joshua Tree cactus, marshlands, small charming villages and a great variety of beautiful flowering trees and plants.

Located about 60 miles north of Puerto Vallarta, it sits pretty along a little cove backed by verdant geen slopes and edged by rugged black rock formations at either end. With just one main, sandy thoroughfare and a few cobbbled side streets, it 's a lovely place to unwind and contemplate the horizon.

Arriving in out coastal fishing village of about 300, we note some improvements. The extensive undeveloped beach property (in litigation for years) has been cleaned up significantly and the palm trees look regal.

Clean Soft Sandy Beach

Birds congregate along the beach too. Herons, frigate birds, pelicans to name just a few of them. The pelicans seem to take over the rugged rocks near the shore and are so much fun to watch.

Chacala days are filled with long walks on the white beach sand, swimming in the warm waters, hiking in the jungle hillsides (snakes even come out to charm), Whale viewing, fishing, surfing, and watching rich colorful sunsets every night.

The Huichol people who make the lovely beaded jewelry and sculptures live in the mountains above Chacala. The journey is well worth the effort.

Whale watching was so exciting when a mother and baby whale started following our boat and showing off with their magnificent breaching. I think whales enjoy us as much as we enjoy them!

What Could Be Better?

Our Casa de La Playa ( Beach House) is an artsy comfortable spacious abode directly on the beach and in the middle of the tiny town's activities. Sitting under our palapas (beach umbrellas of palm fronds) on the beach we see bands passing, itinerant Mexican Craft merchants, as well as flan, oyster, shrimp, bread, pie vendors.

A special treat was to attend the ten day festival of Nuestra Senora de Guadalupe in the neighboring town of Las Varas. We joined the villagers walking in the parade, attending church service, and danced in the light of the moon.

Mazatlan has been called the "Pearl of the Pacific" and is breathing new life into its historic center. Her great gift, though, is the beautiful16 km of golden sandy beaches. It boasts of having the longest malecon (boardwalk) in Latin America!

The city's life centers on its port operations, commercial fishing, and now tourism. So many warm water activities to enjoy: swimming and beach fun, watching for humpback whales and pelicans, finding illusive iguanas, surfing, snorkeling, and fishing.

The variety of fish is a dream for sportfishing: marlin, swordfish, sailfish, tuna, dorado, and red snapper...and the chefs know how to prepare it.

Greatest Treat on Mazatlan Beach

Boating along the coast, we could feel the growing pains of Mazatlan with new construction along the once pristine beaches. Some massive boxy high-rise structures of condominiums and time-share condos are a disappointing contrast to the traditional Spanish-style architecture of Mazatlan's Pueblo Viejo (Old Town).

Fortunately, there seems to be a cultural revival in pueblo viejo, old town. Along the cobbled streets and crumbling edifices, are newly restored gems like the Teatro Angela Peralta, a museum of local history, the charming Plazuela Machado, and some boutiques. The Cathedral, nearby, has also had a facelift.

Eating a Mexican fusion dinner at the colorful Topolo restaurant near the Plazuela was an incredible treat. We enjoyed watching our sweet waiter prepare the margaritas and salsa at our table. Then stepping outside, we joined the music and dancing in the Plaza...what a beautiful experience....

Packing for the journey is always a challenge, particularly when I am dressed in layers of sub-zero silk underwear covered with fleece and and will soon be living in swim suits and shorts.

Our odyssey begins in Mazatlan, continues to Chacala, Bucerias and circles back to Mazatlan. All are north of sunny Puerto Vallarta in the Sinaloa, Nayarit, and Jalisco states of the Pacific Coast.

We are ready to jettison our fleece for swim suits and sandals!

Here we go. Day before departure and a thousand details and decisions before taking off from Yakima Airport via Seattle, LA, and Mazatlan.....See you in Mazatlan tomorrow....I hope!

South West England....two incredibly beautiful cities.....so a touch of both Bristol and Bath follows:

Bristol, first charter granted in 1155 and has ranked among the top English cities from the 13th century. It has been an important city of trade with European and North American countries. It has also been an important shipbuilding and cultural center.

BATH, SOMERSET, ENGLAND

Bath is a showpiece and was first established as a spa with the Latin name, Aqua Sulis, by the Romans sometimes in the AD 60s about 20 years after they had arrived in Brtain. The Romans built baths and a temple on the surrounding hills of Bath in the valley of the River Avon around hot springs. Edgar was crowned king of England at Bath Avvey in 973. Much later it became popular as a spa town during the Georgian era which led to a major expansion that left a heritage of Georgian architecture crafted from Bath Stone. (The stone is very difficult and expensive to maintain.)

Imagine..Narrow Lanes!
Rather Challenging

Today we left our Belfast hotel via a taxi to the George Best airport boarded the short flight to Cornwall on Flyby Air. Paying almost $500 baggage fee (two small bags) for an air flight of less than two hours was such a shock. We later learned from the locals that it is necessary to check baggage online before Flyby flights for a much reduced rate.

Landing in the Newquay airport in Cornwall we rent an auto and drive to an airbnb in Mylor Bridge, Cornwall, Southwest England. A teaching companion and fan of Doc Martin thought Cornwall was a delightful English area to enjoy.

After adjusting to driving on the left lane of the extremely narrow roads, crazy confusing round
abouts, difficulties finding our destination, and being rather tired, we arrived at our destination: 2 Trevellan Road, Mylor Bridge, a tiny village on the inlet of Mylor Creek. Cate and John Skinner, our fabulous airbnb hosts greeted us with open arms. We were totally delighted to find the lovely home that you can view below. A great setting to just enjoy.

Religious and political differences in Northern Ireland

Unfortunately, one becomes aware of another element present in much of the city - evidence of the Troubles . This refers to the violence, disaster and killings with those in Northern Ireland who want to remain with the English government, (Protestants), and those who want a separate republic, (Catholics).
People don't talk openly about these Troubles, but the evidence is clear in many neighborhoods and sections of Belfast. Below are billboards in the Catholic neighborhood.
The Troubles are still brewing today and can erupt again at any time. Even today, December 29, 2013, negotiators are meeting in Belfast to settle differences that seem to be increasing. Hopefully, both groups continue to work together to strengthen their beautiful country.

En route to the northwestern most point of northern Ireland one can see remains of Norman fortresses and castles along the craggy coastline.

Giant Causeway

Most interesting is the Giant Causeway, located in the far northern corner of Northern Ireland, with as many as 40,000 interlocking basalt columns and strange mysterious hexagon formations. Local folks have attributed many magical elements to these strange formations, but it seems that about 60 million years ago the cooling and shrinking of lava forms created this mystery.

On our return to Dublin we visited the Rock of Cashel, a well preserved Norman bastion with fascinating bas relief. It is on a prominent green hill with an outcrop of limestone.
It seems to be a fortification with sturdy walls enclosing a round tower, a 13th century Gothic Cathedral with well preserved bas relief, and a fine 12th century Romanesque chapel.

For over 1000 years, the Rock was a symbol of power and the seat of kings and churchmen who ruled in that region. The O'Brien clan and McCarthy tribe were some of the many who vied for power.

The Peninsula of Dingle is similar to the Ring of Kerry. But, it has its own unique charm of enchanted villages, great surfing, golf, remains of stone and iron age settlements and mixtures of velvety and rocky soil.
Hanging out in Dingle for several weeks would be so much fun. Definitely one of my favorite Irish settings.

On to Killarney, County Kerry, via a Ferry from Inishmore to Galway town passing through charming Limerick and touristy Adare town traditional thatched roof cottages.

Lodging in Anne Marie's Killarney condo who greeted us with food items for breakfast and all instructions for local activities is a perfect plan. Staying here for a week is a convenient way to visit local sights of Killarney as well as the nearby colorful peninsulas of Kerry (179 km) and Dingle.

We spent a day biking in the large woodlands of Killarney National Park and touring the Muckross Estate, a exquisitely resored 19th Century mansion with extensive gardens.

We spent a long day basking in the golden light of the Ring of Kerry with her multitude of small charming villages, scattered islands offshore, ancient sights and mixtures of lush velvety and rocky soil. The roads were so narrow that we often wondered how we survived without wrecking our car.

Dun Aengus, a fortification built 2000 years ago consisting of 3 nonconcentric walls and 60 meter high cliffs of limestone high above the fierce ocean. It is a significant walk to explore the fortification. What effort it took to build it!

At one time this rugged isolated Island was populated by Christian monks who came to build monasteries and learning centers. It became a highly regarded religious education destination for Christian monks who came from as far away as Rome.

The incredible rugged landscape and isolation of this small island of Inishmor has drawn Hollywood movie producers to make several well-known film over the years: Ryan's Daughter, Leap Year, Man of Aran, and Playboy of the Western World.
