It's been a while since I posted anything new. This is a Cinematic Feature from the wedding of my friends Stephanie and Jim. It was held at the beautiful Atrium at the Curtis Center in Philadelphia. I think you can tell that everyone had such a wonderful time.

Joelleen and Matthew at William Street Common

noreply@blogger.com (Kenneth Stillman) — Thu, 23 Jun 2016 03:07:00 +0000

Man, this one was hot - in more ways than one. Not only was the temperature hot, but everyone had so much fun and danced their butts off.

Joelleen and Matt are classic rock fans and their song selection proves that it doesn't need to be a love song to make a great video or have special meaning. It just needs to be fun. And editing this one was extremely fun for me. Andrew and I got so much good footage that the hardest part of the editing process was choosing what not to use.

This video won't make you cry - it'll make you wanna get up and dance along.

Wintre and Terah at Manufacturer's Golf Club

noreply@blogger.com (Kenneth Stillman) — Tue, 07 Jun 2016 09:04:00 +0000

With the weather forecast calling for sever thunderstorms and possibly a tornado it looked like Wintre and Terah's wedding was going to be a wet one. But The Lord held off long enough for everyone to have a great time and stay dry - that is until it was time to leave. That's when it started to pour really bad. I felt sorry for the valet parking people. I hope they got tipped well.

Indira & Brent

noreply@blogger.com (Kenneth Stillman) — Tue, 17 Nov 2015 10:37:00 +0000

The best part of being wedding filmmakers is that we get to meet and work with some of the nicest people. Susanne and I had the pleasure of filming the wedding of Indira and Brent and got to meet many of their friends and relatives. It's always great to work with couples who have such a strong family bond.

Saturday was a unique day for us. Not only did we film the wedding, but we also provided the DJ services. We are proud to say that we had a crowd on the dance floor all day.

And on a technical note, Saturday was our first shoot with our brand new Blackmagic Design Cinema Cameras. We used three of them to capture the wedding from different perspectives. We hope you will enjoy the improved image quality over other filmmakers who use DSLR's. The detail in the images is incredible.

Suzanne and Patrick couldn't have asked for a better day and I couldn't have asked for a nicer gathering of people to work with. Both families, and the bridal party, were a dream to film. It really makes my job easier when everyone is in a great mood and gets along. I had the pleasure of filming two previous weddings from this party over the last couple of years, and we're filming another friend's wedding next August. We can't wait.

The Big News!

noreply@blogger.com (Kenneth Stillman) — Tue, 29 Sep 2015 23:04:00 +0000

Philadelphia Wedding Films is pleased to announce that we will be shooting all future films using 3 new Cinema Cameras by BlackMagic Design.

This means that our future films will have the look and feel of a major motion picture. Since 2006, we have provided films that have incredibly beautiful images. But in 2008, many wedding filmmakers chose to go with DSLR photography cameras to film weddings. And while the images looked good, those camera have some flaws that made switching a risky task. To completely understand the benefits of the BlackMagic Cinema Camera (BMCC) it helps to discuss the shortcomings in the DSLR cameras.

1. RECORDING TIME LIMITS - When DSLR' first came out they had a 12 minute record limit. Now it's 30 minutes, but still - who wants to have to stop and start recording every 30 minutes? The BMCC records to solid state hard drives and can record and store hours of footage.

2. LOST FOOTAGE - I still hear horror stories of DSLR cameras that don't record to the CF or SD card properly and the filmmaker loses huge segments of footage. This is especially true if th camera battery dies. The cameras aren't programmed to stop recording and save the files before the battery is completely drained. And losing footage is not something I was prepared to do. The BMCC has a dedicated internal battery and software that prevents this from happening.

3. STYLIZED IMAGE - If you've looked at wedding films recently you will notice that many of them have the same kind of image. The images are good, but have very saturated colors and very dark shadow areas. This is because these cameras are using compression software in order to fit the data onto the CF or SD cards, which have slower writing speeds than a solid state drive. This is where I need to get a little technical, so stay with me.

This compression software is called a "codec", and that is short for compression/decompression software. DSLR"s us either a format called h.264 or AVCHD. In order to write the data files onto the slow media the codec must capture the image and immediately throw away some of the data. So the software examines the pixels in the image. If there is a black pixel and the pixels immediately surrounding it are a very dark grey, the software will make those pixels black as well to make the image size smaller.

The BMCC uses a recording format called Apple ProRes HQ, which has a recording data rate 10 times the size of h.264 or AVCHD. So DSLR cameras are throwing away 90 percent of the data that the BMCC captures. Which is why the BMCC can record the same image, yet display a much more detailed image.

Here is a video by One River Media that shows just how much more detail and more cinematic the BackMagic Cinema Camera is over a DSLR.

You can watch this directly on the Vimeo site and really see the difference in HD by clicking here.

Susanne and I are so excited to be be able to bring this new improved image quality to our future clients. We are sill the only wedding filmmakers in Philadelphia who offer the same day edit as our primary product, but are now the only filmmakers in Philadelphia to offer this superior cinematic experience.

BIG ANNOUNCEMENT ON TUESDAY!

noreply@blogger.com (Kenneth Stillman) — Sun, 27 Sep 2015 00:09:00 +0000

Sure, I could announce it now. But how much fun would that be? There needs to be some anticipation, am I right? So On Tuesday I have a huge announcement about the future of Philadelphia Wedding Films. It's going to be huge and future couples will be excited about it.

Tune in, Ken

Jaime & Alex had a great wedding and we couldn't have asked for better weather in the middle of January. They have a 3 year old little girl, who is featured in the video, and she really brightened up the day. I didn't hear her complain once.

I'd like to give a HUGE shoutout to the hair stylist, Jill Kozar, whose company is Up Your Do. As you can see in the video she does absolutely gorgeous work. But what you don't see in the video is that she works efficiently and kept the bridal party on time. Since I am creating a video to show at the reception if the hair stylist runs late it cuts unto my editing time. I encourage all future brides to give her a call.

There is something special about doing the wedding film for another wedding professional. I just knew it would be a great day. Ariella owns A Breath of Fresh Hair, which is one the of the area's best and fastest growing on-site wedding hair specialists.

And being in the wedding industry she chose to work with some of her favorite professionals. Bill Hock has been filming weddings for 9 years and was great to work with.

You can't ask for a more beautiful wedding day than the one that Jenna and Michael had. The sun was shining, the birds were singing, and everything went according to plan.

The reception was held at the luxurious Presidential Caterers in Norristown, PA.

The reception was extended an hour and this meant more work for the DJ. But not when your DJ is Dave Schaffer from Schaffer Sound. While many DJ's can sometime struggle keeping people dancing for an hour or more, Dave kept the dance floor packed for three and a half hours. I don't know how he does it.

Photos for Chrissy and Bill

noreply@blogger.com (Kenneth Stillman) — Tue, 28 May 2013 17:11:00 +0000

For Chrissy and Bill's wedding I worked with one of my most favorite people ever - Sarah Schulte. The only reason I didn't mention her in the post is because she's moving to Boston. Well actually she has already moved to Boston and has been commuting every weekend to finish up her obligations in Philly. So, sorry Philly - you can't hire her anymore. But her photos came out so wonderful, as always, that I still wanted to share them with people and hopefully some lucky couple is Boston will notice.

Check out Chrissy and Bill's photos here.

Philadelphia Wedding Video at the Glen Foerd Mansion

noreply@blogger.com (Kenneth Stillman) — Wed, 15 May 2013 09:57:00 +0000

Geri and Nick came all the way from the Jersey shore to get married at the beautiful Glen Foerd Mansion. There is just nothing like this place throughout all of Jersey.

Paul and I had the pleasure of meeting and working with the very talented Lisa Rhinehart, whose pictures you can see on her blog here. These are Geri and Nick's engagement photos. Check back soon to see their wedding photos. I"m sure they'll be breath taking.

As you watch the video you'll see a team of very attractive ladies, working diligently to make the bridal party go from beautiful to gorgeous. The talented team of Nina and Danielle from Cheekadee Makeup Artists are always great to work with. You can see in the video that their work lasted up to and through the reception, which is a huge deal, since it was raining on and off all day.

Once the bridal party had their makeup on they were handed over to the very gifted hands of Ariella Landau for their hair. Her company is Fresh Breath of Hair and I strongly recommend her. The bride and her girls looked amazing all night long.

And the man assigned to get the bridal party to let down their hair and get all sweaty from dancing did exactly that. Jim Gosser from Synergetic Sound was great to work with and kept the dance floor going all night.

Chrissy is the sister of Maryanne, who's wedding I filmed three years ago. The flower girl is Maryanne's daughter and she is just the cutest little girl. The ceremony is at St. Dot's, which is one of the photo/video-friendliest churches in the Philadelphia area. It's big and bright and Father Murphy always comes through with a great homily.

The reception was a blast and we had the pleasure of working with Tom and Kristen Hefferon from Time Code DJ's, who kept the dance floor hoppin' all night. And if you stay until the end of the video you can see the first wedding Harlem Shake that I am aware of - all thanks to Tom and Kristen.

Delivering All In Digital

noreply@blogger.com (Kenneth Stillman) — Fri, 25 May 2012 15:20:00 +0000

Times are changing. It's important that we change with them.

When I was a kid I remember getting our first VCR. The first movie we recorded was Rocky II off of HBO. Then along came the DVD, and eventually the Blu-Ray disc. From talking to couples I believe the adaption of Blu-Ray discs is extremely slow and is going to be surpassed by streaming media devices.

The reason I say this is because we all own streaming media devices already, but we just don't think of it that way. Your cable box is a streaming media device. Your cell phone is. Your XBOX, Wii and Playstation 3 all have the ability to play video files over the internet. I have an Apple TV in my home and I haven't inserted a DVD in a player in years. All my favorite movies and TV shows are available at the touch of a button. Even when I am away from home I can watch them on my iPhone and iPad.

I believe that creating DVDs and Blu-Ray discs adds lots of unnecessary time to our post production. So I will now be delivering all our weddings using digital streaming media files. Your files will be delivered on a flash drive. There will not be a change in price. Although the flash drives are more expensive than the materials for the DVDs, they will save me a lot of time so our delivery times will be faster. Digital files are also much easier to share, upload and archive.

Of course, if anybody still would like the DVDs and Blu-Ray we will create them upon request.
