HELP WANTED – COLLEGE FOOTBALL’S ANNUAL RITE OF PASSAGE

2012-12-07T11:18:00.004-08:00

(UPDATE: Since this post was originally published, NC State hired former Northern Illinois head coach Dave Doeren to take the reins. Cal hired offensive guru Sonny Dykes away from Louisiana Tech. Arkansas and Auburn made big splashes hiring Brett Bielema and Gus Malzahn respectively. Kentucky went with little brother Mark Stoops. Last but not least, Tennessee hired Butch Jones away from Cincinnati. That leaves UTEP, Colorado, Arkansas State, FIU, Kent State, Southern Miss, Temple, USF, and Western Michigan as the remaining major college programs without a head coach.)

It happens every year. The college football season nears its end. The talk of bowl games and national championships is in the air. However, for some teams, the talk permeates around the head coach. Will he or won’t he? If he is, who will take his place? Usually the answer is obvious. Other times, not so much. That is part of the beauty of college football.

The old adage “coaches are hired to be fired” reared its ugly head yet again for 11 major college football coaches. (UTEP’s Mike Price said he “retired.” I will take him at his word notwithstanding his .437 winning percentage over 8 years.) Some firings were expected. John L. Smith (Arkansas), Derek Dooley (Tennessee), Joker Phillips (Kentucky) and Gene Chizik (Auburn) knew, or should have known, that mediocrity does not fly in the SEC. Others, such as Tom O’Brien (North Carolina State), John Embree (Colorado), and Jeff Tedford (California) were a bit more surprising.

O’Brien led the Wolfpack to winning seasons the last three years and four bowl games in six years as head coach. Why was that not enough? The obvious answer is during O’Brien’s six years, N.C. State never played for an ACC championship – their highest finish was in 2010 when they tied for 2^nd in the Atlantic Division. The Wolfpack also lost 3 out of their last 5 games this year, including losses to in-state rival North Carolina and ACC punching bag Virginia. In this bottom line business, O’Brien did not do enough to move the needle.

1700 miles to the west in Boulder, the University of Colorado pulled the plug on the Jon Embree era less than 2 years after it began. Listening to UC Athletic Director Mike Bohn try and explain the sudden direction shift was like listening to a politician trying to distance himself from his past failures and asking his constituents to “give me one more chance.” This coming afterBohn’s first major hire and failure – Dan Hawkins. Hawkins proceeded to give UC fans 5 years of nothingness. Bohn stood by as Hawkins drove a once proud organization off the road and over a cliff. Now he will get his third, and possibly last, opportunity to find the right football coach.

Bohn knows all eyes are on him. “No question,” he said. “The pressure is immense.” He was front and center as the Buffalo’s made the move to the Pac 12. Now he has to produce a winning product, and it starts with a coach that will generate excitement with CU alumni. I am sure Bohn’s boss, CU chancellor Phil DiStefano, let Bohn know his next hire better resonate from coast to coast. For Bohn, that means finding a way to convince an elite coach to give it a go with a floundering program with average at best facilities. He better hit a home run this time or his seat will only get hotter.

Tedford’s firing at Cal was a bit more intriguing. Tedford was loved by everyone of importance (the administration and powerful Cal boosters). His 82-57 record over 11 years also was respectable. Tedford also was the highest paid state employee in a state with huge financial problems. And, with no buyout in his contract, Cal (i.e., the State of California or some deep pocketed booster) owes him approximately 7 million dollars (2.3 million per year through 2015). To some, Tedford’s high salary made him virtually untouchable, especially considering the poor financial condition of the state and UC system. However, Cal Athletic Director Sandy Barbour felt it was time to part ways. “This was an extraordinarily difficult decision, one that required a thorough and thoughtful analysis of a complex set of factors,” Barbour said in a press statement. Barbour better hope the California taxpayers agree with her analysis since they are now on the hook for Tedford’s extended vacation.

Penn State Scandal From The Eyes Of, Well, Everybody

2012-07-12T21:16:00.002-07:00

Today we take a look at how the Penn State Scandal and reaction to the Freeh Report is playing across various media outlets.

What better place to start than in good ole' Happy Valley. Here is an interesting editorial by Adam Bittner, Staff Writer at the Daily Collegian about how Penn State can move past this tragedy by, you guessed it, focusing on the football team.

http://www.collegian.psu.edu/archive/2012/07/11/blue_out_game_should_have_deeper_meaning.aspx

Here is a great piece published by the AP and republished by NJ.com collecting various reactions to the Freeh Report. Gotta love Scott Paterno protecting dear old dad.

http://www.nj.com/collegefootball/index.ssf/2012/07/penn_state_scandal_reaction_to.html

No matter the bad press, Penn State is still Penn State. Well, at least according to this CNN article documenting the record breaking fundraising at Penn State over the last year. I love the quote from Penn State spokesman Dave LeTorre. The donations "send a loud and distinct message." "Despite the things that have happened with Jerry Sandusky, Penn State never really lost the support of its alumni."

http://www.cnn.com/2012/07/09/us/pennsylvania-penn-state-donations/index.html

Who would have thought Joe Pa would have a child care center named after him? Not any more. One of Joe's greatest supporters, Nike CEO Phil Knight, admits he was duped.

Finally, if you love rankings like I do, you will love this ranking of worst all time sports scandals. I'm sure Baylor University can give Penn State a tip or two on overcoming a devastating event and subsequent cover-up.

Sacramento area 5-Star recruit Eddie Vanderdoes is on the rise

2012-07-11T16:40:00.002-07:00

-Defensive tackle Eddie Vanderdoes impressed us with his quickness at both the Oregon Nike Football Training Camp and The Opening. The 310-pounder shredded even the toughest offensive linemen that he faced in both of those settings and has the potential to be one of the best at his position in college football if he continues to develop. USC, Oregon, LSU and others are in the mix to land the nation’s No. 11 overall prospect.

Youth Football Concussion News - California Concussion Law

2012-07-08T20:33:00.001-07:00

Head injuries, especially concussions, have become increasingly common in sports, particularly in football. This is a disconcerting trend when it comes to young athletes. One problem that arises with all athletes young and old is players being allowed to return to play too soon after an injury. Returning too soon puts young athletes at risk of suffering further and potentially serious brain injuries.

According to the National Center for Injury Prevention, 1.5 million Americans each year sustain a brain injury. Of those, 50,000 die and over 1 million are treated in hospitals. Many of these victims are children, who are most at risk. Almost 500,000 children suffer serious brain injuries as a result of accidents each year.

In October 2011, California passed legislation aimed to address youth sports head injuries. The legislation requires all young athletes who have been removed from a game due to a head injury to remain out of any further play that same day. Additionally, permission from a medical professional is required before this player would be allowed to return to play in the future.

The legislation passed with NFL support and was signed by Governor Jerry Brown on October 4, 2011. Review the law at http://www.leginfo.ca.gov/pub/11-12/bill/asm/ab_0001-0050/ab_25_bill_20110325_amended_asm_v97.html

Great article by Joe Davidson of the Sacramento Bee

Breaking down Sacramento-area prep football players to look for this fall

Stopped by Sheldon High School this week to catch a peek at the San Jose State football camp tour. Spartans coached took six vans to various NorCal sites in recent weeks to run scores of athletes through drills.

San Jose assistant coach Klayton Adams knew how to get to the Elk Grove Unified School District campus. He was a standout lineman for the Huskies last decade before playing at American River Collegeand at Boise State. He coached two seasons at Sacramento State before being lured to San Jose State.

Among our observations on upcoming senior talent:

* Big on Beau - Granite Bay has yet another defensive stopper to behold in Beau Hershberger, a powerfully built 6-foot-2, 225-pound linebacker with a 3.7 grade-point average and interest from Ivy League programs such as Yale, and Oregon State, Sac State and UC Davis, among others. Hershberger's father Greg played receiver at Chico State under Mike Bellotti. Son has the same sort of wheels as the old man, too, never mind the size difference, having rumbled 94 yards for an interception against rival Del Oro last season. Del Oro rallied to win that game, but Granite Bay rallied to close the season with six consecutive victories, culminating in a Sac-Joaquin Section Division I championship win over Pleasant Grove. Big Beau is expecting a repeat run.

* Terrific Terry - Nick Terry is fast emerging as the next prospect of note from Pleasant Grove. The 6-4, 265-pound defensive lineman has offers from Oregon State, Colorado State, Washington State, Cal Poly, Nevada and UNLV with more unofficial campus visits in July, including Corvallis. Pleasant Groveline coach Dale Ellingsworth raves about Terry's ability and work ethic.

Other Pleasant Grove players of note at this camp included: 6-3, 180-pound receiver Wyatt Demps; 5-8; 6-2, 220-pound linebacker Earl Chism; 5-7, 160-pound receiver DeAundre Terrell; 6-1, 220-pound tight end Tyler Weathersbee and 215-pound linebacker/fullback Tyree Hanson.

* Sperbeck Speed - The biggest name quarterback entering this coming season is suddenly running a lot of routes - as a receiver. Thomas Sperbeck of Jesuit dazzled at times in running the spread last fall for the Marauders, and he has a strong, accurate arm, but he has been playing receiver in a lot of summer workouts to showcase his speed and skills at that position. Sperbeck may play receiver in college, though at just under 6-foot, he's a clone of Dano Graves, the former Folsom QB star now at Air Force Academy.Sperbeck won a speed/sprint contest at the San Jose event. New Jesuit coach Marlon Blanton will install the veer this summer, an offense heavy on the run, though quarterbacks have excelled in this set (see De La Salle, Blanton's alma mater).

* Garrett the Great - Also adjusting to the veer at Jesuit will be standout lineman Garrett Stohmaier, a superb student who adds to the "student-athlete" label. Stohmaier has rising recruiting interest, and he has the attention of the Ivy League schools.

* Miller Time - Taylor Miller-Wing is the new quarterback at Folsom after starting on the JV two years ago as a sophomore and serving as a back-up last season to state-record holder Tanner Trosin. And all the eye tests come up like this: wow. Miller-Wing at a shade under 6-3 and 210 pounds unleashes lasers, has good feet, speaks like a leader and is eager to carry on the QB legacy at Folsom under coach Kris Richardson, including two he watched up close in personal in record-setting performers in Dano Graves and Trosin, both Bee Players of the Year. Miller-Wing has received interest from Nevada, Utah, San Jose State, Oregon State and others. He is a 3.0 student and said he'd explore becoming a Navy Seal if college football doesn't work out.

* Carter Control - Phillip Carter just might be the next impact receiver for Folsom to go with a new passer in Taylor Miller-Wing. Carter is 6-1, 190 pounds and has had a superb summer, though he didn't compete in this San Jose State camp due to a shoulder injury that is not serious. Carter played receiver and defensive back last season and had some big plays, despite a nagging ankle injury. With a 3.8 grade-point average, Carter has received interest from Nevada, San Jose State, Utah and Colorado State - and throughout the Ivy League, which tells you what sort of student he is.

* Franklin Fever - Franklin has all the makings of a section title contender under coach Mike Johnsonwith speed, versatility, skill and desire. The Wildcats have fared well in camp settings, including winning a recent NorCal showcase 7-on-7 competition. True, no helmets and pads in 7-on-7, but there's no denying that Franklin is off to a rousing start. Key talents include: quarterback Trent Spallas; slot/safety Trevon Lampley; slot/linebacker Joey Banks; linebacker/running back Steven Rogers and receiver/cornerback Damion Sanders. And because big linemen are indeed allowed in speed-spread teams, say hello to Tyler Hect, a 6-3, 300-pound two-way player.

* Mighty Monroe - The longest face belonged to Brandon Monroe, the superb tailback/return ace for Del Oro. Monroe did not participate in this camp due to a foot injury that is not serious. He also missed half of the Oregon camp when he injured that wheel, but talent is talent, and San Jose State was sure to offer him a scholarship anyway. Monroe reports that Del Oro should be a section title contender again under coach Casey Taylor.

* Golden Greenlee - The best quarterback in the Sac-Joaquin Section could very well be directing the No. 1 team in the section this fall at Lincoln of Stockton in Zach Greenlee. The 6-2, 185-pound passer won a recent passing competition in Las Vegas and will be part of the Elite 11 showcase in souther California. He has an offer from Fresno State, and with a 3.6 GPA, he'll surely garner more. Lincoln opens the season against Elk Grove and Pleasant Grove and also takes on St. Mary's and Granite Bay.

* Vinnie and the Jets - Ok, so Vinnie Johnson doesn't have jets, but the 6-5, 255-pound lineman forChristian Brothers does have considerable leg drive, and a scholarship offer from San Jose State. A teammate with some jets is Jalen Walker, a 6-foot, 190-pounder who plays receiver and corner.

Others of intrigue note from the San Jose camp...

* Rocklin quarterback Daniel Kniffin and receiver Cory Burmester look poised to take the Thunder back to prominence this fall.

* Aaron Froudevaux, a 6-3, 285-pound defensive lineman for Whitney, could be the Wildcats' next scholarship talent.

* After Brendan Keeney started three years at quarterback for Granite Bay, the next in line is the perfectly capable Grant Caraway.

* Lineman A.J. Samataua of Del Campo, all 6-3 and 315 pounds of him, will ensure that the Cougars continue to run the ball with fury this fall.

* Mason Shaw, a 6-2, 300-pound lineman, is the protector for new Woodcreek quarterback Stephen Nogosek, fresh off a section Division II title run in baseball.

* Cecil Williams of Laguna Creek is an impressive prospect at quarterback for coach Dave Morton, back with the program he started from scratch in the 1990s. Williams is 6-3 and 200 pounds.

* Tyler Winston of Antelope, a 6-2, 170-pound receiver/DB/ATHLETE, is an every-down play maker. He already has an offer from UCLA, with more sprinkling in.

Youth Football Weekly focuses college football with an emphasis on Sacramento area football players. Our goal is to provide a forum that highlights local football stars as they make the transition to college, and, eventually, professional football. The Editor in Chief - Skip Bishop - is a fanatical youth and college football fan, having played at both levels.

This season Youth Football Weekly will introduce the POWER POLL!!! Skip created the POWER POLL because he got tired of (1) watching coaches/sports writers rank teams they haven't spent one minute evaluating and (2) his inability to acquire enough advanced mathematics training to actually understand the computer polls. The POWER POLL addresses each issue. The POWER POLL is a computer program based on a modified RPI formula and common sense. The first POWER POLL will launch Tuesday, September 4th - after the first full weekend of college football.
