Create a square foot garden

DIY tip: make your own square foot garden. Square foot gardening becomes more and more popular. In case you are not aware what square foot gardening is and what the benefits are, please check out this Wikipedia page.

I have seen stores which sell complete square garden packages, but wouldn't it be more fun to build your own? There's an easy step by step guide on how to make yours after the jump.

Step 1: build the frame

Take four wooden boards of the same size and put them together with screws.

Step 2: create the base layer

Use old newspapers to make a bottom layer.

Step 3: fill the box with material
Fill the box with vermiculite, peat moss, and mushroom compost.

Step 4: mix the vermiculite, peat moss, and mushroom compost

Mixing the three different materials gives you the best basis to grow herbs, fruits and vegetables.

Step 5: make a wooden grid

Use six wooden slats to make a grid. You can use nails to fasten then to the box.

Your square foot garden is ready now and you can grow your first plants. You can grow any kind of herbs (basil, mint, oregane), fruits (strawberries, cherries) or vegetables (spinach, lettuce, eggplant).

DIY tip: make your own storage system. This storage system was created with wooden boxes and binder clips. By using clips, you can keep switching the boxes.

If you are afraid the binder clips aren't the right solution to keep the boxes together, you can just glue the boxes together. Except, than it's not so easy to re-arrange your storage system.

Hearts Panel

What do you need?
- A panel or bulletin board
- Lots of hearts
- Ribbons
- Fabric
- Scissors, pins and tape or staples

Step 1: collect hearts
Buy hearts in different colors, shapes and sizes. You can buy them in various stores and especially around Valentin and Christmas, they will be easy to find.

Step 2: get a board
Buy a bulletin board or use an old piece of wood.

Step 3: cut the fabric
Cut the fabric at the same size as the board plus 2 or 3 extra inches, which you can fold around the edges of the board.

Step 4: fasten the fabric to the board
You can either use tape or a staple gun to fasten the fabric at the back side of the board

Step 5: attach the ribbons to the hearts
Tie the ribbons to the hearts and use the pins to attach them to your board.

You can re-arrange your board whenever you feel like it. You could do the same with butterflies or flowers or any other shape you like.

I bet that it's easy for creative minds to create their own recipes box. You could take an old storage box and turn it into a cool recipes box that matches the colors of your kitchen or kitchen ware.

DIY tip: Shelves from old books. Give your old books a second life. Find a cheap flat shelf, which you can attach to a wall. Open te book, between the last page and the back cover and put glue on both the last page as well as the inside of the back cover. Place the glued pages around the shelf and press the book together for a while.
