Em um meio de cultura desenhado especialmente para pesquisa, aglomerados de células se organizam sozinhas em uma estrutura de camadas e tridimensional. Nessa estrutura forma-se o cálice óptico, que corresponde ao estágio fetal do olho e que se desenvolve na retina durante fase embrionária, o qual direciona o destino e a posição das células, bem como o formato organizacional do olho.
