The cities of Gyeongju, Gongju, Buyeo and Iksan were designated as the ancient capitals of Korea in accordance with the Special Act on the Preservation of Ancient Capitals decree enacted in March 2005. For a city to become a capital, it must be some place well-suited for habitation; a strategic location against foreign invasions; and an all-around convenient spot for overseeing the country. Growing Coffee on Jeju Island

Love for coffee is growing faster than ever; you can find a coffee shop in every other block nowadays. Coffee is a highly sensitive plant that grows in subtropical regions where the temperature stays above 10 degrees Celsius even during winter. That’s why farming coffee has been mostly considered out of the question in Korea. Ms. Roh Jin-Yi, however, doesn’t accept that. Ms. Roh, the first coffee farmer in Korea, is currently growing some 25,000 coffee trees in a 5,600 square meters plantation on Jeju Island despite the unfavorable conditions. The Times 50 Best Inventions of 2010

The Online Electric Vehicle (dubbed OLEV) manufactured by the Korea Advanced Institute of Technology (KAIST) was included in the 50 Best Inventions of 2010 published by The Times, along with Apple’s iPad, Google’s Driverless Car, Sony’s Alpha A55 Camera and others. Also included was the English-Teaching Robot invented by the Korea Institute of Science and Technology (KIST). The Times introduced the OLEV as an advanced green growth technology that could speed up the commercialization of electric cars. As for the robots, they can effectively teach young students how to pronounce English words; they can move in any direction, follow human facial expressions, and students actually enjoy interacting with this “cool” new staff. 20 Seoul-based foreign journalists on last November 19 and 20 visited Jeju Island as part of their press tour program sponsored by the Korean Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism. They had their first impressive encounter with Jeju haenyeo (sea women) who dive 20m deep into the ocean and collect sea products, holding their breath for as long as two minutes. The journalists also walked the famous Jeju Olle Road which exhibits a scenic view of cliffs and the sea. And of course, can’t forget the sumptuous meal composed of just-caught Jeju sea food and makgeolli. Read more about their Jeju trip!

Korean Grafted Cactus Fascinates the World

The Rural Development Administration (RDA) exhibited its newly developed grafted cactus at the horticulture fair held last November 11. The Korean grafted cactus has been garnering excellent reviews from the worldwide horticulture market with its annual volume of export exceeding USD 2 million to over 30 countries. Contrary to the usual association of cactus (some thorny, misshapen, rough-looking plant standing under the scorching sun in the desert), Korean cactus comes in numerous splash colors (red, pink, yellow, orange etc) and sizes (a cute little cauliflower-like thing the size of your fist). Korea on the Road to First Class

Chairwoman Lee Bae-Yong of the Presidential Council on Nation Branding gave a lecture on the subject of Korea’s nation branding for the KBS program “The Road to First Class.” Lee emphasized that Korea’s astounding growth in the 20th century was possible only because it was backed up by the country’s such timeless virtues as perseverance, cooperative and pacifist inclination, modesty, warmhearted regards for life and nature, harmony and sharing. Transformational Leadership

According to David McClelland, there are two faces of power-the positive face and the negative face. The negative face includes personal goal, misuse of power, conflict and dominance and the like. On the other hand, the positive face, which entails the real leadership, are inspiring the followers, praising and uplifting, empowering and trusting the people and taking responsibility. What David McClelland argued that leadership is not forever. It is for the time being. It is changeable and transferable. Therefore, a good leader turns his so-called followers into leaders, so that in absence of him somebody can take the responsibility of the leadership. David McClelland’s Effective leadership is defined as a leadership approach that brings change in individuals and social systems. It creates valuable and positive change in the followers with the end goal of developing followers into leaders. James McGregor’s transformational leadership enhances the motivation, morale and performance of his followers through a variety of mechanisms. These include connecting the follower's sense of identity and self to the mission and the collective identity of the organization. As a role model for followers, that motivation and morale inspires them. Therefore, the leader can align followers with tasks that optimize their performance. If we see the flying Geese, we see they fly together and one Goose leads the team. Near behind the leader, two or three Geese follow him and then all other Geese follow them. When the leader feels tired, he give up him leadership to anybody next to him and join the followers team. Immediately from the following two or three Geese one Goose takes over the position to lead and others follow him. What we learn from this flying geese metaphor is, leadership and power are transformable. The leader should realize that power must be distributed and shared, and that everyone must have a sense of influence over his or her own jobs. Effective leaders empower others or his followers who use that power to enact and further the leader's vision for the organization. For technical managers, need for achievement was analytical of advancement through lower levels of management, but power was predictive of higher levels of attainment. Leaders and followers make each other’s interchangeable. They make each other to advance to a higher level of moral and motivation. Transformational leaders, by their vision and personality, are able to inspire the followers to change their expectations, perceptions and motivations to work towards common goals. Transformational leaders have to have a clear vision about the articulation of their followers. They are able to help followers, experience the same passion and motivation to fulfill their goals. Transformational leadership leads to positive change among his followers. They are energetic, passionate and enthusiastic. If we see the life of President FDR, he was a transformational leader. The way he handled the depression of United States of America and navigate the different types of problems and the challenges by the oppositions, it is proved that he was the transformational and charismatic leader with passionate and enthusiasm. Nevertheless, he always confirmed with his vision and goal.

Therefore, we can say that the underlying principle of the paradoxical principle is the transformational leadership that turn all of their followers into leaders, share the leadership, and encourage the followers to change their vision and expectations.

Korea’s Women of the Sea ("Haenyeo")

"Haenyeo" (the sea women) are female divers in the Korean province of Jeju. What used to amount to as many as 15,000 haenyeo in 1970 has now plummeted to a mere third of that number; and most of them are over seventy years of age, meaning that haenyeo are fast disappearing. Nowadays, instead of the strenuous lifestyle as a haenyeo, many Jeju women are turning elsewhere for other possibilities of living. In light of this sad reality, The LA Times published a feature article on Korean haenyeo, including interviews with the youngest haenyeo in Korea (33-year-old Ms. Kim) who has chosen the harsh path so that the precious tradition could be preserved.

If hiking is about getting to the top of a mountain, with cycling, you get to savor and appreciate the beautiful scenery and ambience you often just pass by. The Korea National Park Service announced that they are going to create extra cycling courses of 20km at the four parks: Seoraksan, Naejangsan, Jirisan and Woraksan. Also, in the cycling programs offered at the Hallyeohaesang National Park and the Deogyusan National Park, you can rent bicycles for free at their respective park offices.
