Back Story:

We have been wanting to try something new in the fish breeding world and started breeding Discus. We were fortune enough to get assistance from one of the members of the Greater Seattle Aquarium society - Andree Hurley, She was moving and need place for this wonderful Discus pair. So while we are baby sitting this pair.

Yet another summer has almost come to an end. New and innovative things to come for the fish room. Going to work on a water changing system this winter so that I can sit back and enjoy the fish's some more. So stay tuned and see the progress.

Over that last week I have had 3 pairs of Double dark angels pair up and lay eggs. More coming soon.

Grow out rack

Latest addition to the fish room is a grow out system/Rack (2 bottom

tanks are 50 gallons and the top is a 30 gallon)

Rack was made out of 2x6's, I added CFG lights to the top of the bottom of the rack above.

For the top lighting I made a DIY light fixture out of rain gutter and again CFL light blabs.

I had to reseal all 3 tanks as I was told they leaked (I got them used). I used 2 different

products to seel them and Tap acrylic cement (Weld-on 4) on all the edges then went back

with GE silicone. Wrapped the rack in plastic to keep the moisture in.

Whats next:

1. I plan to adding Wooden doors to the top of the 2 50 gallon tanks. Will look more attractive (and if it looks good do that to the other large rack as well).
2. DIY plywood show tank
3. I still have another wall to figure out. Muhaaaa

Fry grow out tank

So after pondering this for some time now. Just went and got the stuff. The whole thing cost me under $20. I used materials that I had sitting around.

Back ground; I wanted low flow of water to raise angels fry in. The sponge filters just weren't doing all I wanted them to do. Angel fry need alot of fresh water all the time.

I used 4 10 gallon tanks. Did a 1/2 inch PVC overflow out of each that tank (X4) it down to the sump. I used a 20 gallon tank for the sump. Placed the heaters (X2) sump and a power head in there. The power head pump water back in to the sump. In the sump I have a Javanese filter moss in side of the drip pan, bio balls, ceramics media, and sponge.

For the return I have a 240 gallon per hour bump, connected to a 1/2 in return hose, 1/2 in PVC, run the lengths of all four tanks. I put a Y connector with a cap, drilled a 1/4" whole at the end of each cap.

It nothing to powerful that was the plan from the beginning. It keeps the flow of water for the fry just enough to circulate good water to them all the time.

I said this once before, but for some reason rock slates just don't work for us. I have gone through a couple batches of eggs and they all fungus over. So drastic measures call for a new plan... SO this is what I came up with today:

2 inch PCV. Drilled with a 1/4 diameter hole. Added suction cups and place on the side of the tank. I know not a new idea but first time for me. Oh and when you place it in the 1 gallon jar it sinks to the bottom.

Update in fish room

Its the end of yet another weekend, so updated pictures.

Opps took a picture of the building inspector on her rounds..

Still need to add a couple more supports to the front of the big rack. Then use it for
storage. Moving things around to a way that makes the most scene to us (weather its
right or not guess time will tell)

Air system Setup and Install

I got the air system (Jemco Model #LPH45) in last weekend. I love this thing it is so quite and will handle more then I can though at it.

I made a manifold that I can add to later if and when I need to.

I did the rest a little different then I have in the past. This time I used the following:

1/4 inch Control Valves

1/2 in. x 50 ft. Polytube (main air line)

1/4 in. Barb Connectors to supply air to tanks

Tool to cut 1/4 barbs to air lines

and some half inch Stop connectors and L's to get it around corners.

I can get 50 of the 1/4 in connectors for under 5 dollars. I got on ebay and found the plastic control valves 100 of them for cheap. They are alot more inexpensive then using the brass air controllers. And I can have them where I need them (just above the tank) and not have to go all the way up the wall to off the air.

I connected it to the stand with 1/2 in PVC holders. Work like a champ. I still have to run a bleed out valve to the system. So right now Im running a couple line into the corner to bleed it off.

The best part with this stuff, if you make a mistake you dont have to run to the hardware store and get another PVC and start over. You just fill it with a (Oh Sh!T)whole plug...

Completed 2x6 rack install

New rack installed

Where did the weekend go??? I painted the outer sections of the rack black, the interior tops white to reflect the light. I ran the Electrical for the tanks (heaters) and lights. For the lighting I used CFL lights above each tank.

Finished Painting and wrapped in plastic (moister barrier). The plastic in the front is temporary going to make curtains to cover the top half of the tank so you don't get blinded.

Installed it added more support bracing 4x4's to keep it level, refilled the tanks.

Added a 100 gallon acrylic (lower Left) and some adult angels

All I can say is Thank god that's done. If you have question post and I will answer them as best I can..

2x6 Add on rack - Work in progress

Such a nice day. I was out side soaking it up. The way the Free reception desk sat I wanted another row of tanks to go above it. So I came up with this design. and starting building an addition to my Rack. So here you go:

Made from 2x6's I added the extra shelf supports to the top to ensure the stability of the extra weight.

This will give me an additional 5 20's in a stair formation. Th height of the 2x6 worked out great and achieved the out come I was looking for.

More pictures to come. Put this is the progress for today. Next step is to wire in the over tank lights. and get this baby installed.

I have 11 tanks that I have to Paint the back and one side to add to this. Project for 2marow.

DIY Water filter system completed

3 GE House hold Filters connected together (fist canister has a 50 micro filter the other 2 canisters have carbon filter). The base is made out of 3/4 in PVC. I added a short RV (Walmart - automotive area) type to the end that connects to the faucet and another longer RV style to the other end. after constructing this I realized I needed a hose holder. So off to the hardware store to finish the job. Makes it easy to trans port and move around and store it.

At the end going to the tank I came up with this idea (not really a good friend of mine uses it and I liked the idea and made this). There is a ball joint to stop the flow of water at the end of the RV hose.

Now on to the fill adapter. I love this idea because when you put it in the water it makes the water dispersal easy on smaller fish and Fry. I drill holes on the top sides and bottom. It may look crude but it does the job.

DIY Water Filter System - Sketches

I made up sketch a PVC DIY home filter system. Camera is at the other house so here is my cheesy
picture:

Using home filters (from any of the hardware stores), there are two micro filters and a carbon filters in
there. It connects to the faucet and runs into the tanks from there. I can pick this thing up and move
it from room to room if I have to.

My plan is to get 2 55 gallon storage tanks and run the filter to the drums. Then circulate the water with
a sump from harbor freight and then to the fish tanks. Adding a float valve will ensure they don't flood
the room.

The control valve when closed will circulate the water. When open it will be used to fill the tanks.

I'm using a 240 GPH pump that I use to empty the tanks. I put a modified end to the pump so it will pull
the water with out sucking in the fish. Again the plan is to use another 55 gallon drum to collect the fish
water out side and use it in the yard.

Yet Another plan is to make a a solar panel to heat the fish room. Solar Heat

I will post pictures when I get things moving along, but so far this is what the plan is. If anyone has
question I will do my best to help answer them.

Building My fish room:

Starting any Idea I sitting down and draw out your ideas first. The above drawing are made from Google Sketchup (free and easy to use).

We picked up a reception desk FREE off craigslist. That is the row toward the back with the 20's on it. This thing weights a ton. I have to add some 4X4 supports under the front, but after that should be a solid unit. The rest are metal cabinets (from Lowes) was 3 tears high but I changed them to double stacks (weight for them is rated at 2000 lbs.) They will house the 55gallons and the 75's and 1 breeder 40.

I figured out the power tonight and will run that this weekend. I don't have all the tanks but that give's me room to add more if we need to. (or MTS Hits LOL).

Once I get things together I will update with pictures.
