OSB: Java Object to XMLObject (or String)

1. Create a very simple Java Project with just three classes (This project is just to test this solution)

Note: It's important that the two methods, getBook() and getAuthor(), are static so they can be used in OSB.

Export it as Library.jar (Java JAR) and put it in a new OSB Project - OSB Common Resources

2. This is the important part!! Create a new Java Project - JavaToXML

It's a very simple and generic project that makes the marshelling of any java Object to XMLObject (or just to String if you wish).

This project uses Xstream library to serialize objects (http://xstream.codehaus.org/) and XMLBeans for accessing XML by binding it to Java types (http://xmlbeans.apache.org/) so the dependencies are xstream-1.4.2.jar, kxml2-2.3.0.jar and xmlbeans-2.4.0.jar.

3. Create a OSB project - OSB Library (it doesn't do anything special but to see the JavaToXML in action)

4. Stop the server, put the dependencies jars in ORACLE_DOMAIN\lib and start it again

5. Deploy the OSB Library project in OSB Console and test it!

Getting started with Oracle SOA Suite 11g and OSB (11.1.1.5.0)

a) Oracle Database 11.2 Express Edition Beta (the express edition does not meet the minimum version requirement for supported use, but will generally work in a personal development environment)

Important note:

If you are using Oracle XE as your database, you need to set the RCU_JDBC_TRIM_BLOCKS environment variable to TRUE prior to running RCU.

JDeveloper: Connecting to a Subversion repository through a proxy server

When trying to connect to a subversion repository I got this error:

Testing connection...
svn: PROPFIND request failed on '/svn/...'
svn: Connection refused: connect
Connection test failed.

The solution for this:

Connecting to a Subversion repository through a proxy server

If you wish to connect to a Subversion repository through a proxy server, you must first install separate Subversion client software. See Installing Subversion client software.****

Once you have installed the Subversion client software, you will have a Subversion subdirectory in your Windows Application Data directory. To find the Application Data directory, at the c:/ prompt type cd %APPDATA%. Then open the Subversion subdirectory. (On Linux the equivalent subdirectory will be in ~/.subversion, where ~ is the home directory.)

In the Subversion subdirectory will be a file named servers. Open this file with a text editor and find the [global] section. Remove the comment marker (#) from the line http-proxy-host and overtype the placeholder proxy information with the details of the proxy server that you use. Remove the comment marker (#) from the line http-proxy-port and overtype the placeholder port information with the port number for the proxy server. If you wish to exclude certain URLs from using the proxy server, remove the comment marker (#) from the line http-proxy-exceptions and overtype the placeholder URLs with URLs that you wish to exclude.

Add additional http-proxy-host and http-proxy-port lines with details of any other proxy servers that you use.

It is important that the proxy server supports all the http methods used by Subversion. Some proxy servers do not support the following methods by default: PROPFIND, REPORT, MERGE, MKACTIVITY, CHECKOUT. If you experience problems with using a proxy server to access a Subversion repository, ask the server's system administrator to change the configuration to support these http methods.

**** Installing Subversion client software

You do not have to install any Subversion software additional to the JDeveloper Subversion VCS extension, except in the following circumstances:

You wish to create a local Subversion repository using the JDeveloper Subversion VCS extension.
You wish to use a Java binding (helper library) other than JavaSVN, which is the one supplied with the extension.
You wish to connect to a Subversion repository through a proxy server (see Connecting to a Subversion repository through a proxy server).

In all of the above cases, you will need to install separate Subversion client software. If you wish to use an alternate Java binding, you will additionally have to install the binding software (see Installing the JavaHL library).

If you need to install Subversion client software, you can obtain the necessary Subversion source code, and binaries for certain platforms, from http://subversion.tigris.org. You should install Subversion 1.3.2. If you are using an operating system with a package management system, such as some distributions of GNU/Linux or other popular Unix systems, you can either consult your OS vendor or compile the client software from the source code. For more information about Subversion and services from its primary sponsor, go to http://www.collab.net/subversion.

For Microsoft Windows, download the Subversion installer, svn-1.3.2-setup.exe, from http://subversion.tigris.org. Run the installer and place the Subversion client in a convenient location, for example c:\subversion. To check the installation, open a command prompt and type svn help. If you don't see a list of subcommands, check that your system path includes the location where you installed Subversion (for example, echo %PATH% should contain c:\subversion\bin).

"Hello, world!"

Ok, the "Hello World" program is a classic! It's very simple but it's useful to make sure that everything is correctly installed.

We need to perform the steps of the Oracle tutorial (http://www.oracle.com/technology/products/ias/bpel/techpreview/soa11g_installation_tp4.pdf - Creating the SOAHelloApp Application) to create our Application:

1. Create the Application and Project (HelloApplication and HelloProject)

The first problem was that during the installation (post:My first incursion into Oracle SOA Suite 11g) the step 5. didn't happened (The first time you start JDeveloper, you must respond to some configuration prompts...). So when I tried to create the Hello World application it returned the error "Unable to write to /C:/jdevinstance/mywork/HelloApplication/.../connections.xml because it is a read-only. Either make it writable or allow it to be made writable through source control.". The solution is, after the initialization, go to JDeveloper menu: Tools->Preferences->Roles and change it to the Default Role.

So now we can proceed...

2. Create the composite (HelloComposite)

3. Create the Process (HelloProject)

4. Complete the Process

5. Deploy and run the application

(Note: If you changed the Startup Type of the Oracle Services to Manual, don't forget to start the OracleXETNSListener and OracleServiceXE services otherwise it will return the error "SEVERE: Server exiting: ApplicationServer entered state FAILED_IN_START" when you try to start the server instance!)

The second problem is the following error "oracle.jdeveloper.asnav.AppServerMgrException: username and password must be specified" when I try to deploy to the server.

To solve this you need to right click on the Bundled OC4J Server (Right panel: IDE Connections -> Application Server -> Bundled OC4J Server, go to the Authentication tab and write the user: fmwadmin and password: welcome and then test the connection).

6. Invoke the application

Sql developer & vista

Before talking about the issues that was mentioned for the next posts is important to talk about SQL Developer...

If you have tried SQL Developer on Vista, you probably found out that it has some serious problems, such as color scheme switching to basic and the code view becoming a bit unreadable when the text is scrolled.

To address this problem, just set a recent JDK version (latter than 1.5) as the SQL Developer Java Home. This is done by adding the following line in the \ide\bin\jdk.conf (commonly something like C:\Program Files\sqldeveloper\ide\bin\jdk.conf):

-> SetJavaHome

where is commonly something like C:\Program Files\Java\jdk1.5.0_19\.

(Important note: Notice that, to this date (01/06/2009), the latest SQL Developer Version (1.5.4) isn't much compatible with the latest JDK release (jdk-6u14). When it starts up, there will be a couple of exceptions to handle, and SQL Developer eventually won't even start. So, the simplest way to do it is to just install the latest jdk1.5.* release available or the jdk1.6.0_10.)

My first incursion into Oracle SOA Suite 11g

That's it!

I worked 9 months with Oracle® SOA Suite 10g Release 3 (10.1.3.1.0) in a project of implementation of a shared services company for the areas of purchasing and logistics for hospitals and other providers of health care.

I'm a little bit excited with the new release, Oracle SOA Suite 11g, especially to discover what's new since acquisition of BEA, sooooooo I installed the preview version of the SOA Suite 11g software. The final version will only be available after Summer!

The installation step by step:

1. Create home directories and set the following environment variables:

Set these using Control Panel -> System -> Advanced -> Environment Variables

a) set JOH=c:\jdevtp4 – your JDeveloper unzip location – no spaces!
b) set JDEV_USER_DIR=c:\jdevinstance – no spaces!
c) set JAVA_HOME=c:\java – if using JDev base version, your Java SE 5 JDK– no spaces!
d) set BAM_OC4J_HOME=C:\ORACLE\OracleBAM_AS11 – your BAM OC4J home will be the same as your BAM home in this configuration – no spaces!

(Note: You can use any directory location or choose these sample locations but you must not have a space in the path!)

2. Download and install the Oracle Express Edition 10.2.0.1 (Oracle XE) - Oracle XE Server.

3. If you are using XE, after installation you must increase the values of these parameters for SOA 11g to work properly

SQL> show parameter session
SQL> show parameter processes
SQL> alter system set sessions=100 scope=spfile;
SQL> alter system set processes=150 scope=spfile;
SQL> shutdown immediate
SQL> startup
SQL> show parameter session

(Importante note: There's a problem here!!! After the shutdown, it returns an error like "ORA-12514: TNS:listener does not currently know of service requested in connect descriptor".

What we have to do is to edit the "init.ora" file (C:\oraclexe\app\oracle\product\10.2.0\server\init.ora):

Apparently the system starts the OracleServiceXE first, then starts the OracleXE_homeTNSListener, causing the database to not register automatically, so we must stop the services and restart them in the correct order:

net stop OracleXE_homeTNSListener
net stop OracleServiceXE

net start OracleXE_homeTNSListener
net start OracleServiceXE

4. Download the Oracle JDeveloper 11g Technology Preview 4 - (Build 4949) and unzip the JDeveloper zip file to c:\jdevtp4 (%JOH%).

(Note: This release is not feature complete!)

5. To enable the WebCenter and SOA extensions, modify the JDeveloper configuration file:

a) Exit JDeveloper 11g, if it is currently running.
b) Using a text editor, edit \jdev\bin\jdev.conf.
c) Remove or comment out the last line in the file that starts with "AddVMOption -Dide.noextensions=oracle.bam...".
d) Save the modified file.
e) Start JDeveloper.

6. Start JDeveloper by opening a command window and running the executable: %JOH%\jdev\bin\jdev.exe (This starts JDeveloper with a console window which shows informational and error messages).

The first time you start JDeveloper, you must respond to some configuration prompts:

a) Select java.exe in the %JAVA_HOME%\bin directory (no spaces in path).

b) User type: Default Role.

c) Want to migrate from a previous version of JDeveloper? NO.

d) DO NOT update JDeveloper!

7. Create the SOA infrastructure database schemas.

Open a command window to run these sql scripts:

> cd %JOH%\rcu\integration\soainfra\sql
> sqlplus sys/ as sysdba
@createuser_soainfra_oracle_all.sql jdev_soainfra
SYSTEM TEMP

> sqlplus jdev_soainfra/
@createschema_soainfra_oracle_all.sql jdev_soainfra (different login!)

8. Configure SOA to install the Integrated OC4J Server.

a) Set the proxy if necessary: In JDeveloper, select Tools -> Preferences, Web Browser and Proxy, enter the proxy information, and select Test Proxy.

(Note: Add your machine name to the host exceptions list - C:\Windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts).

b) Set the correct server to be used: In JDeveloper, select Tools -> Preferences, Run, and then select Integrated OC4J Server.

c) Configure the SOA infrastructure: Select Tools -> Configure SOA… (Choose the Basic configuration option unless you want to use Oracle B2B. For Oracle B2B, please select the ‘Configure All’ option. Specify the database location and the SOA schema user name and password and test it).

9. Download and install the Oracle BAM or Oracle B2B.
