My name is Nobuko Yoshihara. I grew up in Japan. As a child, I recall how my mother and grandmother enjoyed wearing their traditional Japanese Kimonos and I inherited their appreciation and love of the exquisite designs and colors.

Today I woke out of my home studio in suburb of Boston, Massachusetts. I am the mother of three young children. My husband and I chose to settle in picture New England and have lived here since 2000.

Although we live an American lifestyle, I have continued to carry on the Japanese traditional of having the Kimono as a part of our living simply because of the extraordinary beauty that a Japanese Kimono adds to a home. We have a Kimono hanging as a piece of art on the wall in our living room. Our guests are awed at its unbelievably intricate hand-sewn designs on silk.

Using the Kimonos I import from Japan, I create a variety of apparel and other items. On my website you can see some of my designs. However, you will gain an even better appreciation of the superb beauty of Kimono when you feel the silk and see the iridescent brilliance of its color.

If you love the luxurious touch of silk and if you admire Japanese art, you will find great pleasure in owning and wearing fashions I have created from authentic Kimonos.

Kimono

Did you know that the Japanese traditional clothing called Kimono is very ecological? The fabric used for the dresses that we wear today is cut into shapes fitting to our curvy bodies, but the fabric used for making the Japanese kimono is cut into mostly simple rectangular shapes. Therefore, once the kimono is un-sewn, it goes back to pieces of nice rectangle shaped fabric. Because of that, they can be easily recycled and reused for some other purposes. How “green” is that!

From the olden days, Japanese people have been very good about reusing the kimono fabric for making many different things such as zabuton cushions, haori jackets, children’s small kimonos, etc. After all the main parts are used, people would even make toys out of the small leftovers.

Otedama

Otedama is a traditional Japanese children’s game. To play the otedame, you need Otedama balls, and there are many different shapes and kinds of them. Some of the most common ones are made with 4 strips of fabric or have a shape similar to Hoozuki (Japanese lantern plant).

Inside of the otedama balls are often made of small shells, small azuki red beans, or little nuts and seeds. The balls that are made with small shells make a fine noise when you toss them. Because of that, this type is called Ojami (oh-jah-mi).

Shi-ah-wah-se

One style of Otedama balls is made with 4 strips of fabric. Since 4 strips meet together, it is called 四合わせShi-awase (pronounced shi-ah-wah-se) in Japanese. Shi means four, and awase means to put together. However, another word幸せshi-awase, which has the same pronunciation but different letters, means happiness.

Because of this word-play, this type of otedama balls is thought to bring happiness. In the olden days or even today, you can almost imagine somewhere someone making otedame balls for children and wishing that they will bring a happy healthy life for them.

My lesson time is Tuesday and Thursday morning until noon.
