A Sort of Goodbye

Recently life just got in the way of uploading my Photo a Day onto the internet, I have been taking the photographs yes, mostly of the inside of the new Queen Elizabeth hospital in Birmingham since my other half had her accident, but you will notice I have fallen well behind on the site. So while trying to do a catch up I realised just how much time it takes from my busy schedule and if I grabbed that time bundled it all together I could put it to some useful process

After about 10 years of an internet presence with websites and blogs that have evolved rather than planned I have decided to strip it down, deleting duplication and hopefully create an efficient program of websites to promote my art practise

So this will be my last post, I will continue to take a photo everyday but now it can only be found on my Flickr site, your welcome to join me there

Swanshurst Park Birmingham

The park used to be very busy on any Bank Holiday with rowing boats, a chip and put golf course, and the best swings and roundabouts. Now all that’s left is the swings and gone are the days of queuing for an hour for a boat or canoe, the golf course closed 20 years ago and is now I nice walk past the overgrown greens, bunkers and trees that have fallen across the fairways. Its still a very popular spot and even 9:30 at night there was lots of people walking dogs

Moseley Art Market via Mobile Phone

As I don’t live in Moseley I only work the market selling my prints if there is a spare stall available, I rather like this arrangement as I think if I was there every month I would be over exposing my work. This Time Last Year:

Jeremy is a classical musician and used to play with the City Of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra and in the orchestra at The Royal Shakespeare Theatre in Stratford Upon Avon. He is a compulsive artist always with his sketch book and pencil in hand and generally he wears a beret which adds to the scene. He told me he would always be sketching from the orchestra pit while there was a brake in the music; he captured all the musicians, soloists and great actors over many years. Can you imagine the content of his many sketch books? I have been talking to him about exhibiting this work and it would certainly make a very interesting Artist Talk as part of the show.

The Ever Changing Landscape

There is still a threat of showers but the sun has returned and it has produced glorious light, decisions have to be made for wearing the correct clothes. I took my time walking around the park and as I’m talking to another artist Sam who was fishing I noticed this sky, but by the time I had stepped back to include Sam in the foreground the sun went behind the black cloud, it became incredibly cold and was raining on the other side of the pool. The forecast for the Bank Holiday weekend is good too!

The Golf Umbrella Is the Perfect Solution

It’s cold, it’s dark and it’s very wet and I’m beginning to think that summer is over, this weeks storms enabled the first opportunity to test drive an umbrella I bought back in the spring. I’m very impressed because it doesn’t buckle inside out in high winds and it is also very big so I am dry underneath, but why is it that every time I use an umbrella the handle gets soaked?

This is bonnie she is my partners dog (along with Tillie in the car), being a West Highland terrier she is loud, mischievous and almost impossible to train, well that’s not true but in comparison to my Border Collie Sally she was hard work. To give you some idea when I take the dogs to the park for a walk Bonnie pushes to the front to get out the car door and visa versa when we are ready to go home. I had enough of this so I have been training madam with great success; she now waits for the other two to get in before she jumps up. And then goes berserk in the car

Monday at the Fracture Clinic

Monday morning is not a good time to visit the fracture clinic, think about it. You have Fridays, Saturdays and in our case Sunday’s emergency cases waiting to see the specialist, in fact this Monday the clinic is over subscribed because next weekend is a bank holiday so there are next weeks appointment too. So take my advice if your going to have an accident don’t on the weekend. BTW that is the queue to get into the waiting room, I must say the staff at both hospitals are special. Update on the patient, her ankles are fine but she is bored stiff with daytime television.

This Time Last Year:

I have known the pain of being there when we have lost to Australia (on several occasions) so I was determined to record this moment even if it was in front of my TV screen.

Here a photograph I took at the test match at Perth when Australia retained the Ashes for about the 100^th time. At the start of play this morning Australia had an unlikely task but even so I was fidgety and at times superstitious, as the late afternoon built up into a sweaty crescendo I nervously waited for the moment

Up Close and Personal with the New Queen Elizabeth Hospital Accident and Emergency Department Birmingham

Unfortunately my partner fell and broke her ankle and sprained her other ankle so bad that at one time the doctor thought she might have broken both ankles (bit of commitment there). So we road tested the A and E department at the new Super Hospital in Birmingham. Perhaps because I will have to wait on her for the next who knows how many days she didn’t mind when I started clicking as I’m pushing her wheel chair around the hospital , or was it because she knows what to expect from me.

Cricket In All Weathers As We Push For Promotion

With very heavy showers for most of the week the prospect of cricket was not good and travelling to the ground I drove the 21 miles through a mixture of rain and bright sunshine and arrived there during a very ominous storm. Eventually the game restarted and because the season is now reaching a climax they played on through more rain to the end. All this to gain a draw, and with the draw came precious bonus points that could mean in a very tight 3 team race at the top of the table promotion at the end of the season

The church is celebrating its 150^th year and I have tried to take a photograph that compliments the building but the grounds are too small to move back and get the whole building and it is surrounded by high bushes and trees. I was resigned to taking some close up detailed images, but today waiting for the traffic lights to change I found this view.

For two days I have been photographing something in my garden, with difficulty because my macro lens needs replacing so its been hit and miss, this morning I selected my photo of the day and then relaxed, job done. Except at 10 to 12 tonight I found out that that my selected file was shot yesterday, and the others had been deleted, I grabbed a tee shirt and give you two Eskimos.

They Didn’t Stay There Long

At the moment while I’m walking Bonnie the dog I also have a nibble at the fresh fruit that is in season, the berries in this picture ranged from very sweet to very sour, I would of thought that as they so close on the stem there would be more consistency.

After 34 Years This Has To Be The Photo Of The Day

John has waited 34 Years for this moment. 34 years ago his cricket team Seesay from Yorkshire reached the National Village Knock Out Final but unfortunately a week before the final at Lords he injured his back and couldn’t play, today his team beat Fillongley (Warwickshire) so this once in a life time occasion is there again in 4 weeks time. To put this into perspective Lords is the home of cricket so its like a weekend amateur baseball player going with his team to Yankee Stadium. Incidentally its Johns birthday too

Notice this building along a road of factories and the only signage says “Binding Site” not even The nothing else no explanation. So I Googled it and got.

“Binding Site specialises in the research, development and manufacture of innovative, high quality, immunodiagnostic assays in the fields of multiple myeloma (and other B cell disorders) and investigation of the immune response”

Still none the wiser.

This Time Last Year:

Chris one of my friends and he has had visitors from the Czech Republic staying with him they have had a busy tourist week and tonight we all went for an Indian meal. This is something new for the Czechs and it was fascinating watching them sample this totally alien cuisine and the reactions after the herbs and spices and chilies hit the pallet.

A Pakhet Moment

Pakhet one of my Flickr contacts specialises in these studies of people in the streets some unaware of her camera click, it’s a unique style that I really enjoy.

As I approached the Hare and Hounds pub I could just see one of her images in front of me, he just stood transfixed with his phone/IPod (and his pint) as if he’s zapping or taking control of the passing traffic on the busy Kings Heath high street, the woman behind him was totally separate and unfortunately moved her arm at the wrong time and therefore breaks the isolation, I didn’t want to hang around too long in case he realised that I’m not taking a photograph of the shops and street.

I’m doing some heavy duty pruning of over hanging bushes and needed my secateurs sharpened. When I collected them I was shocked at the price of only £2.50, its not the sort of job you do regular so I really had no idea what I would pay but would of expected to pay at least double that. So I decided the shop keeper deserved some publicity and as I’m taking the photo his mate over the road was shout what about me. His shop was a mini Mothercare so I shant be needing his services. Kings Heath DIY is on Alcester Lanes End on the crossroads with Taylor Road

Birmingham to Stratford Upon Avon on the Shakespeare Express

Birmingham Railway Museum Trust runs the Shakespeare Express steam train service between Birmingham and Stratford upon Avon every Sunday from July to September.

I thought at one stage I wasn’t going to get this shot I positioned myself on the platform at Whitlocks End station and just as the steam train is expected round the bend along comes a little local train (type I can photograph every 15 minutes). As nobody was get on or off it moved away in no time and just got out of sight as the star attraction made an entrance.

The River Project

Saturday evening at an old factory building in Gas Street just of Broad Street in Birmingham the culmination of an 18 month project featuring 18 artists and 138 performers in an “exhibition that celebrates heritage and identity through dance”. It was a great atmospheric setting for the show.
