A Two-Time Universe: The Unified View from Higher Dimensional Space and Time

For a long time, Itzhak Bars has been studying time. More than a decade ago, the USC College physicist began pondering the role time plays in the basic laws of physics — the equations describing matter, gravity and the other forces of nature and he is all geared up to bring it to the scientific community in a year or two. Itzhak Bars, from the Department of Physics and Astronomy, University of Southern California suggests that there exist two dimensions of time and not one, not the one we are familiar with. He proposed a way to test his heretical idea and suggested a theory as well which will test his hypothesis next year.

Itzhak Bars, whose long term goal involves the construction of the unified theory at its fundamental level, has mind wobbling ideas toward the basic structure of how we perceive dimensional reality. "There isn't just one dimension of time," Itzhak Bars tells New Scientist. "There are two. One whole dimension of time and another of space have until now gone entirely unnoticed by us."

As hopelessly bizarre as it may sound, Bars claims his theory of "two time physics", which he has developed over more than a decade, can help solve problems with current theories of the cosmos and, crucially, has true predictive power that can be tested in a forthcoming particle physics experiment. If it is confirmed, it could point the way to a "theory of everything" that unites all the physical laws of the universe into one, notably general relativity that governs gravity and the large scale structure of the universe, as also the quantum theory that encompasses the subatomic reality. Itzhak Bars’s research is driven by some of the current questions in Cosmology, the Standard Model of elementary particles, and unification of forces including quantum gravity in the framework of string theory or M-theory also known as the theory of everything. The mysteries that are hoped to be resolved include the physics of the very early universe and how it determined the gauge symmetries (forces) and the families of quarks and leptons (matter) that we observe today. Once the fundamental theory is constructed it is likely that it will suggest the best approach to answer our current mysteries, including dark matter, dark energy and a host of issues related to masses and interactions of quarks, leptons and force particles.

All the physics we know with certainty today at microscopic or macroscopic distance scales is embodied in principle in the fundamental laws described by the Standard Model of Particles and Forces, and in General Relativity. Only a few, though, believe that more than one dimension of time exists. Bars pioneered efforts to discern how a second dimension of time could help physicists better explain nature.

“Itzhak Bars has a long history of finding new mathematical symmetries that might be useful in physics,” said Joe Polchinski, a physicist at the Kavli Institute for Theoretical Physics at UC Santa Barbara. “This two-time idea seems to have some interesting mathematical properties.” If Bars is on the right track, some of the most basic processes in physics will need re-examination. Something as simple as how particles move, for example, could be viewed in a new way. In classical physics (before the days of quantum theory), a moving particle was completely described by its momentum (its mass times its velocity) and its position. But quantum physics says you can never know those two properties precisely at the same time. Bars alters the laws describing motion even more, postulating that position and momentum are not distinguishable at a given instant of time. Technically, they can be related by a mathematical symmetry, meaning that swapping position for momentum leaves the underlying physics unchanged (just as a mirror switching left and right doesn’t change the appearance of a symmetrical face).

In ordinary physics, position and momentum differ because the equation for momentum involves velocity. Since velocity is distance divided by time, it requires the notion of a time dimension. If swapping the equations for position and momentum really doesn’t change anything, then position needs a time dimension too. “If I make position and momentum indistinguishable from one another, then something is changing about the notion of time,” said Bars. “If I demand a symmetry like that, I must have an extra time dimension.” Since the early stages of string theory in the 1970s, string field theory (SFT) was recognized to be a non-perturbative approach to string theory. Among all the formulations of string theory since its inception, string field theory stands out as the most complete scheme as a non-perturbative formulation that seems, in principle, to be better positioned to answer the central physics questions. “One of the main goals of SFT (and indeed of all the efforts in string theory) is understanding the vacuum state and how we ended up in four dimensions. This includes elucidating the physics of the very early universe and how this determined the gauge symmetries (forces) and the families of quarks and leptons (matter) that we observe today.”

Today, theoreticians are studying a theory of everything called M-theory that adds yet another dimension, taking the total to 11: 10 of space and one of time. Until now, they have been reluctant to meddle with time because it can lead to unexpected consequences, such as time travel. Changing our picture of time from a line to a plane (one to two dimensions) means that the path between the past and future could loop back on itself, allowing you to travel back and forward in time and allowing the famous grandfather paradox, where you could go back and kill your grandfather before your mother was born, thereby preventing your own birth. Bars first found hints of an extra time dimension in M-theory in 1995 and, when he looked into it, discovered the grandfather paradox and other fears could be overcome by using a new kind of symmetry - a mathematical property to work out the relationship between the quantities of position and momentum. It is this symmetry that might help reconcile the two mighty pillars of 20th-century physics, quantum mechanics and relativity. Simply adding an extra dimension of time doesn't solve everything, however. To produce equations that work with the new symmetry that describe the world accurately, an additional dimension of space is needed as well, giving a total of four space dimensions, he explained in the journal Physical Review D. According to Bars, the familiar four dimensional world we see around us is merely a "shadow" of the six-dimensional reality, just as a hand makes many different shadows on a wall when lit from different angles. Although we cannot experience the extra time dimension directly, we can effectively notice it through the different perspectives of the different "shadows". In this sense, he points to already existing evidence of physical phenomena at both macroscopic and microscopic scales.

Furthermore, he believes that more evidence for his theory could emerge next year, when particles are smashed together in CERN's Large Hadron Collider near Geneva, Switzerland to create hitherto unseen "supersymmetric" particles. Efforts to formulate a clear and complete version of M theory have so far failed. “Nobody has yet told us what the fundamental form of M theory is,” Bars said. “We just have clues — we don’t know what it is.” Adopting the more symmetric two-time approach may help. Describing the 11 dimensions of M theory in the language of two-time physics would require adding one time dimension plus one space dimension, giving nature 11 space and two time dimensions. “The two-time version of M theory would have a total of 13 dimensions,” Bars said. For some people, that might be considered unlucky. But for Bars, it’s a reason for optimism. “My hope,” he says, “is that this path that I am following will actually bring me to the right place.”

It feels ironically proud to know where man has reached while pursuing the theories of everything, as much as it is paradoxical to admit that he hasn't been able to unfold mind's mysteries.

Philosophy: A Psychological Approach Towards Metaphysics

Sometimes philosophers deal with questions of truth and sometimes with questions of goodness; sometimes they offer consolation for life’s sorrows and sometimes they are purely pragmatic. In the philosophy of science, a theory may be valued only for its predictive capability ; its truth or falsity may be immaterial. In ethics, philosophy may have a prescriptive function, offering a preferred set of values; but where those values originate from is a debatable question.

We all hold a traditional view that philosophy is the attempt to define a qualitative approach to life. This view implies that philosophy is the analysis and interpretation of values and standards, within the thinker’s experience of reality. But values and standards are also the domain of psychology. Therefore there is a great deal of overlap between the two disciplines.

Philosophy separated from psychology in the nineteenth century, under the need to put logic and logical analysis on a mathematical basis. However, logic is only one of the two tools that are needed for analytical thinking. The other tool is the ability to observe the associations between ideas – this tool is a psychological one. Hence effective thinking in philosophy requires both rational and psychological forms of analytical ability. The nineteenth-century separation of philosophy from psychology removed much of the content from British philosophy and gradually put it to sleep. We are trying to enroll the two disciplines back together again.

What is the relation between these two disciplines ?

The way we all must have consistently experienced it is that psychology limits philosophy, psychology sets the boundaries within which philosophy can range. The narrower the range of a person's psychological understanding of life, so correspondingly will the authentic range of his philosophy also be narrow. Without an adequate understanding of life, so the thinker is dependent on imagination and prejudice when trying to stretch his ideas to fit aspects of reality that he has never experienced.

Within a perspective that emphasizes the qualitative features of life we will find that philosophy provides most of the framework and psychology provides much of the content. The effectiveness of philosophy to define a qualitative approach to life rests on its analysis of psychology : this enables the individual to create himself within the context of his historical situation.

More generally, the purpose of philosophy is to abstract what is valid from all realms of value so as to enable the person to create his or her own identity ; the historical situation determines what is holistically possible.The results of such philosophical analysis should be consistent with the empirical results of psychology.

Metaphysics and Logic

The highest realm of thought for man is that of metaphysics. Since man is a part of this realm he can approach metaphysics through his own understanding of life. Metaphysics is not theology. Man cannot know god but he can understand concepts that concern the nature of reality and being. Metaphysics deals with the creativity and destructiveness within creation, with the purpose and the meaning of evolution, and the way that it functions. Man enters into metaphysical discourse when he creates values and meanings. All conceptions of reality are based on metaphysical ideas. Even within orthodox science, concepts such as force (for example: electricity, magnetism, gravitation) and laws of causation are metaphysical concepts : their existence can never be verified directly, but only indirectly through their effects. Traditional philosophy has metaphysics or ethics as its starting point. But psychology was hardly explored then. Within tradition, what passes as truth, may sometimes be only idealism or wish-fulfilment. The psychological boundaries of the traditional thinker formed a perspective of denying validity to the material world. The material world, a world of constant change, could not be accepted as a real world; the real world somehow lay behind all the change, like an archetype. So ethics and metaphysics had to conform to a world-hating, world-denying, mentality. Ethics was often formulated in ways that enabled a person to survive in an uncertain realm of pain and sorrow.

The exploration of consciousness began in earnest in modern times with the ideas of Rene Descartes and Thomas Hobbes. Hobbes started his political philosophy with a psychological profile of his contemporary, seventeenth-century Englishmen. Eventually the reaction against the attitude of world-denial produced the compensating swing to materialism as the basis of philosophy. Materialism has its place in any system of thought that attempts to understand reality.

To try to ascertain what is truth requires the reduction, even the elimination, of psychological boundaries ; the philosopher of reality needs to be a psychologist too. A genuine metaphysics is not a flight from materialism but assimilates it into a greater perspective that has fewer boundaries. The practical importance of the role of psychology as the base of philosophy is dramatically illustrated in the problem of good and evil. A person’s attitude to this problem defines their ethics, or at least the code that they live by. Within the Christian and the Indian world-denying mentalities the problem of the existence of evil cannot be solved.

Understanding of emotion leads to the relativity of good and evil. Neither absolute good nor absolute evil exists, but each arises from the other : good arises from evil, and evil arises from good. Within evolution, creativity arises from destructiveness, and destructiveness arises from creativity. Read on Releasing Duality.

The exponents of analytical logic in the early half of the twentieth century believed that their logic would downgrade metaphysics to the status of being purely a nonsensical thought system. Only philosophers with no understanding of psychology could take such a view. To explore metaphysics requires the combination of intuition with rationality, and both develop within the constraints of psychology. Intuition is right-brain centred, and rationality is left-brain centred. Using both together produces holistic thinking.
All non-sceptical philosophies, and these include those produced by analytical logicians, are underpinned by two psychological premisses, which are :

My philosophy represents truth for me.
What is truth for me is truth for everyone else.

The first premiss is subjective and the second one provides for objectivity. The sceptic omits the second belief. The first premiss just demonstrates the psychological limitations of the person ; it indicates the range of that person’s experience of life. The wider that range of experience then the wider must philosophy become in order to explain it. The poverty of experience of analytical philosophers was reflected in the poverty of their conceptual thinking.

East Meets West on Evolution’s Border

The official theme of the third annual Science and Nonduality conference was “On the Edge of Time,” but the unofficial narrative was about time running out on the flat-earth paradigms of our day: the world works like a machine, consciousness follows matter, our lives are essentially meaningless, we are in this thing alone. Indeed, in listening to the many voices representing both science and spirituality, it was clear that while there is no ultimate agreement on the nature of nonduality—“essential unity” in the Advaita tradition of Hindu philosophy—there was near unanimous recognition that a new era for humanity is emerging, and evolving around our innate interconnectedness. It’s an awkward emergence, to be sure, like the first faltering steps of a child learning to walk, but animated by unstoppable forces.

“The next Buddha is the sangha,” Vietnamese poet-activist Thich Nhat Hanh is quoted as saying, implying that the future of the planet depends on the awakening of the many, not the heroic efforts of the few (sangha refers to a community of spiritual practitioners). From the convulsive initiation of Arab Spring to the still amorphous Occupy Wall Street movement (now “the 99 percent”), the impulse for change is spreading rapidly and widely, like a benevolent virus fighting off the antibodies of outdated belief systems.

Speaker after speaker invoked how entangled we all are, from the micro to the macro, from the cellular to the cosmic. Those whose worldviews are rooted in ancient spiritual traditions cited the mystical texts and teachers of their religions: Rabbi David Cooper spoke of the mysticism of the Kabbalah, which declared “It gave rise to God, to heaven, and to earth.” Llewelyn Vaughn Lee recalled an ancient Sufi saying about the yearning for the Divine: “I am he who I love, and who I love is me.” Father Richard Rohr reminded us of Jesus’s caution, “As you do unto others, you do unto me.” And Buddhist teacher-activist David Loy brought forth the Vedantic saying, “All is self."

When considered beyond their clichéd familiarity, these are remarkable statements. And perhaps even more remarkable is the movement of science toward similar conclusions. Physicist-meditator John Hagelin calmly proposed that “the structure of the superstring [theory in physics] corresponds exactly to the structure of pure consciousness,” and he showed dozens of slides to make his point. IONS’ Dean Radin presented seventy-five years of psi research, with average effect sizes equal to and even greater than what normally qualifies as evidential validity—we are, indeed, entangled. Eminent physicist Menas Kafatos fluently entwined the concepts of quantum mechanics with ancient Eastern thought while noting that Sir Isaac Newton wrote extensively about mysticism. And on it went.

Granted, there is as much speculation on the side of science as there is faith on the side of the spiritual, but is it a coincidence that these dualities of belief and ontology are inexorably moving closer together at this time (remember Fritjof Capra’s The Tao of Physics)? Although consciousness comes first in the East and last in the West, these two central paradigms seem to be spiraling together like strands of DNA in a dance of evolutionary creativity. And to what purpose? According to science writer Lynn McTaggart, spiritual teacher Andrew Cohen, integral theorist Ken Wilber, David Loy, and others at the conference, it’s the ineffable pull toward wholeness and connection in which we are waking up to our role as active agents. Does that suggest an intelligently designed universe? And who, or what, is the designer?

And yet for all the high-minded and inspirational talk, I leave the final, simpler words to nonduality teacher Rupert Spira, who reminded us that while we live in a world of swirling chaos, uncertainty, creativity, and emergence, the real action is in the now: “If the past and the future are never experienced other than by a thought occurring now, what does that say about time? And when we do not resist what is, when we do not seek what is not, we are…happy.”

The Living Earth Simulator Project (LES) aims to 'simulate everything' on the planet, using anything from tweets to government statistics for mapping out social trends and predict the next economic crisis. It will connect through the most powerful computers on our planet using world wide web and multiply its power of processing to extends beyond imagination in the world of computers today. Basic trends toward the rise and fall in population, financial sector, stocks, diseases, and issues like global warming will be analyzed using vast reams of data. Living Earth Simulator Project would pre-empt disasters like the current economic crisis and eurozone meltdown. Supporters of the supercomputer idea say the need to forecast another worldwide economic crisis is greater than ever. That explains a £900million scheme to produce a computer system which could predict the next financial crisis.

The man behind the idea has billed it as a 'nervous system for the planet', while academics have backed it as a replacement for current outdated economic models. Professor Dirk Helbing, one of the leaders of the project at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich says 'The idea is to gather live information from a huge range of sources and then analyse it using the world's most powerful computers. 'Many problems we have today - including social and economic instabilities, wars, disease spreading - are related to human behaviour, but there is apparently a serious lack of understanding regarding how society and the economy work.

Professor Helbing said the LES would be able to predict the spread of infectious disease such as Swine Flu, identify methods for tackling climate change and even spot an impending financial crisis. It would be filled with huge swathes of data, which would be assembled as-yet-unbuilt supercomputer hardware capable of data analysis on a mammoth scale.

Iain Begg, professor of European Studies at the London School of Economics, said, 'The complexity of the world is simply too great. We cannot even model the weather for more than a few days. 'The social domain, people's behaviour, is even harder to analyse, because social trends are not just complex, they also change with time.
'We have to be sceptical as to whether even the most powerful computers could cope with it.'

Steven Bishop, professor of non-linear dynamics at UCL's mathematics department, who is a key figure in the Living Earth Simulator project, said: 'The modern banking system may have more disasters waiting to happen but they are buried in complexity, just as happened with the crisis of sub-prime mortgages. 'We would hope to find the precursors of instability and disasters and maybe do that in time for politicians to stop them happening.'

Douglas Adams fictitious book The Hitchhikers guide to the Universe had a similar super-computer named Deep Thought which was designed to calculate the ultimate answer to the ultimate question of life, the universe, and everything. After about 7 million years of intense hyper processing the answer turned out to be '42', unfortunately the computer was unable to come up with the ultimate question so they had to begin all over again.

Cymatics, the study of wave phenomena and vibration, is a scientific methodology that demonstrates the vibratory nature of matter and the transformational nature of sound. The term (Kymatiks in German), was adapted from the Greek word for wave, ta Kyma, in the 1960s by Swiss medical doctor and natural scientist, Hans Jenny (1904-1972).

Watching just a few seconds of Jenny’s experiments using audible sound frequencies to animate inert powders, pastes and liquids into life-like flowing forms, offers a rare glimpse into the hidden dynamics of nature. The similarity between these “standing wave” patterns of resonance and the forms of flowers, plants and animals, hints at the universality underlying manifest creation.Witnessing the processes that bring these forms into being, offers us penetrating insight into how an elaborate web of vibrations interacts to create the world we perceive. A recent news story by ANI, (Assian News International), Asia's leading news agency, reported that the aliens and government are using natural faults to curb large populations, here on Earth. Even though that sounds like a statement that must have been made in Star Wars, it is a noteworthy claim made by Laura Eisenhower, the great granddaughter of a former US President.

I was taken aback when I read this news story on the "World" page of Pune Mirror, a local tabloid by Times Group. The story was not as surprising, as earthshaking was the fact that it had gone mainstream. The data available on the internet about aliens and HAARP, has been simply accepted as conspiracies by the new-age researchers and readers, which is critically correct, but ironically, tells us that what appears on the mainstream media has a strong impact on minds of the masses (read: sheeple)

The underground media, the new age blogs and a few independent journalists in the Western countries have had a good share of all the brag about aliens and government connections in their communities and conferences. Independent documentaries have been produced by various websites that have carried out an in-depth research on alien life, ufo sightings and classified government data. Esoteric Agenda, was one of the most popular documentaries on the web that talked about government agendas and the new world order. Many have labelled them as conspiracy theories and many more have co-related it with the recent world changes and the end of Mayan and Hopi prophesies. Even though a lot has been researched on these subjects, none of it has reflected to be, what can be called authentic information, in newspapers and television news.

Ancient Aliens, an American TV series presents theories of ancient astronauts and proposes that historical texts, archaeology and legends contain evidence of past human-extraterrestrial contact. The show presents alternative theories about Easter Island myths, Nazca lines, Pyramids and suggests that aliens made contact with primitive humans, and cites as evidence, Indian Sanskrit texts that are suggested to describe flying machines called Vimanas. Despite a viewership of over 1.6 million in United States and about 6 million views on Youtube, the show has been criticized for presenting disputed pseudoscience. The Day after Roswell is yet another documentary that presents the true story of what happened in Roswell UFO incidence. Since late 1970s the incident has been the subject of intense controversy and of conspiracy theories as to the true nature of the object that crashed.

Being an independent researcher myself, I do not blindly believe in these theories, however, I'm open to evidences and collecting more authentic data. But what holds true, as of today, is the fact that, what was termed conspiracy till yesterday, is now making its place in a local newspaper in India which is accessible to large chunks of mass population. That being said, one can estimate the potential influence of Laura Eisenhower's claims on the public. She also claims that colonies on Mars are being set up by the government. Incidentally, what we know from the NASA, is the recent launch of its Curiosity Rover that aims at finding the signs of life on Mars and will land on the red planet in August 2012.

Whether the governments will disclose its version of truth in 2012, ignites my curiosity. Perhaps, an in-depth hands-on investigation of alien and government agendas should be carried out, that yields us substantial information and does not fool around with entertaining conspiracy theories, because, if Laura Eisenhower's claims about the government agendas are true, we are soon headed for an Occupy Mars movement!

President Eisenhower’s great grandaughter Laura claims at a conference

Johannesburg: Natural faults in the earth are being manipulated using alien technology to thin the earth’s population, the great-granddaughter of a former US president claimed.

During a UFO, science and consciousness conference, Laura, the great-granddaughter of Dwight Eisenhower said natural faults were being manipulated to produce catastrophes like tsunamis and earthquakes using Haarp technology or bio-weapons.

According to www.haarp.net, Haarp technology is a focused and steerable electromagnetic beam used to heat the upper atmosphere and bounce electromagnetic waves back to earth.

Eisenhower said this was part of a secret agenda by governments to decrease the earth’s human population in favour of colonies on Mars and the moon. “Extraterrestrials have been working with governments for a while,” News24 quoted her saying. She said that treaties with the other-worldly beings were signed every 10 years, and that this had remained fairly well hidden through mind-control and manipulation.

Eisenhower revealed she was recruited by an agent in 2006 to take part in a mission to a Mars colony, but she was able to break free from the mind control techniques. She also said that people had been teleported to Mars since the 1970s and that the size of the population there was continuing to shift and expand.

Philosophy and the Matrix: Return to the Source

Philosophy and the Matrix: Return to the Source is one of the two feature-length documentaries on the Ultimate Matrix Collection. It goes over many philosophical concepts that inspired, and are presented in, the trilogy. They spend the first half on the original film, and the rest of the time then goes over parts 2 and 3, with a couple of things on the Animatrix shorts. This consists of clips of aforementioned releases and interviews.

It does a good job of informing the audience about the various thoughts, although it would obviously take far longer to go over all the symbolism in them, and one can ask the very appropriate question if something anywhere near that definite and final is even desired, by viewers or the Wachowskis alike. That does mean that this is limited, but it is likely enough to enlighten and provide food for thought. In line with the series, this may provoke debate, rather than give answers set in stone. Whether one cares for this or not may depend on the extent of their knowledge on the subject, the old ideas, as well as how much they've thought about the presence of such in these three silver screen efforts. Obviously, it also makes a difference if one particularly wants to think about the meanings one could possibly take out of them.

Spiritual Effects Of Hallucinogens Persist, Researchers Report

In a follow-up to research showing that psilocybin, a substance contained in "sacred mushrooms," produces substantial spiritual effects, a Johns Hopkins team reports that those beneficial effects appear to last more than a year.

Writing in the Journal of Psychopharmacology, the Johns Hopkins researchers note that most of the 36 volunteer subjects given psilocybin, under controlled conditions in a Hopkins study published in 2006, continued to say 14 months later that the experience increased their sense of well-being or life satisfaction.

"Most of the volunteers looked back on their experience up to 14 months later and rated it as the most, or one of the five most, personally meaningful and spiritually significant of their lives," says lead investigator Roland Griffiths, Ph.D., a professor in the Johns Hopkins departments of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences and Neuroscience.

In a related paper, also published in the Journal of Psychopharmacology, researchers offer recommendations for conducting this type of research.

The guidelines caution against giving hallucinogens to people at risk for psychosis or certain other serious mental disorders. Detailed guidance is also provided for preparing participants and providing psychological support during and after the hallucinogen experience. These "best practices" contribute both to safety and to the standardization called for in human research.

"With appropriately screened and prepared individuals, under supportive conditions and with adequate supervision, hallucinogens can be given with a level of safety that compares favorably with many human research and medical procedures," says that paper's lead author, Mathew W. Johnson, Ph.D., a psychopharmacologist and instructor in the Johns Hopkins Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences.

The two reports follow a 2006 study published in another journal, Psychopharmacology, in which 60 percent of a group of 36 healthy, well-educated volunteers with active spiritual lives reported having a "full mystical experience" after taking psilocybin.

Psilocybin, a plant alkaloid, exerts its influence on some of the same brain receptors that respond to the neurotransmitter serotonin. Mushrooms containing psilocybin have been used in some cultures for hundreds of years or more for religious, divinatory and healing purposes.

Fourteen months later, Griffiths re-administered the questionnaires used in the first study -- along with a specially designed set of follow up questions -- to all 36 subjects. Results showed that about the same proportion of the volunteers ranked their experience in the study as the single most, or one of the five most, personally meaningful or spiritually significant events of their lives and regarded it as having increased their sense of well-being or life satisfaction.

"This is a truly remarkable finding," Griffiths says. "Rarely in psychological research do we see such persistently positive reports from a single event in the laboratory. This gives credence to the claims that the mystical-type experiences some people have during hallucinogen sessions may help patients suffering from cancer-related anxiety or depression and may serve as a potential treatment for drug dependence. We're eager to move ahead with that research."

Griffiths also notes that, "while some of our subjects reported strong fear or anxiety for a portion of their day-long psilocybin sessions, none reported any lingering harmful effects, and we didn't observe any clinical evidence of harm."

The research team cautions that if hallucinogens are used in less well supervised settings, the possible fear or anxiety responses could lead to harmful behaviors.

These studies were funded by grants from NIDA, the Council on Spiritual Practices, and the Heffter Research Institute.

Additional researchers who contributed to this work include Matthew W. Johnson, Ph.D. and Una D. McCann, M.D. of the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine; psychologist William A. Richards of the Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center; and Robert Jesse of the Council on Spiritual Practices, San Francisco.

Hemp Revolution - The Documentary

Hemp use has been associated with human camps as far back into the Paleolithic ages we could look, its destiny and human destiny is very intertwined. There are few plants that have been as useful to human beings as Hemp. Of nearly 50, 000 uses which hemp can provide renewably, including edible seed, and edible oil that can be pressed out from the seed and is very important fiber in world commerce, a medicine which has been very prominent in Europe and America over the years. That’s a pretty powerful way for a plant to provide for human needs.
Hemp Revolution documentary covers a whole lot of ground. It deals with every historical and contemporary aspect of hemp usage and cultivation (mainly in the U.S.), which turns out to be a lot. From describing the production of a fiber much more durable and economic than wood, the documentary discusses hemps multilateral uses as e.g. food products, as a non-polluting fuel and as a pharmaceutical product with much less grievous side-effects than chemical pharmaceutical products.

The longest and strongest fiber in the plant kingdom cannabis sativa is One of a few strains of hemp which has been essential to world commerce for thousands of years. The wagons in pioneer days were covered in Hemp canvas. In fact the word canvas comes from the word cannabis which was found in ancient Sumerian and Babylonian languages, 6000 years ago. Americas founding fathers including George Washington were keen growers of Hemp, and Thomas Jefferson was probably the first Hemp activist. Realizing Hemps value to the health and prosperity to the nation he encouraged farmers to grow Hemp instead of tobacco. Hemp has been the major paper making material since paper was discovered in China. By the 16th century Hemp was the material for European paper makers and made it into some of the finest books ever made including the Guttenberg and king James bible and many other famous works. America’s first declaration of independence was also first printed on Hemp paper. Most paper manufacturing in this period was done from recycled Hemp canvas. For almost all of us today paper is a way of life the world consumes hundreds of thousands of tons of paper each year and to meet this demand hundreds of thousands of acres of forest are cut down It’s a world wide crisis. In south eastern Australia vast areas of old growth forests are being chipped and bought by Japanese companies.

This is basically a resource grab from an industry that is in trouble the whole operation is a biological disaster and should be stopped immediately. There is no need to be flattening these forest we could be doing it with alternative fibers like Hemp. John Stahl runs a hand paper making printing business in northern California he has found that Hemp stalks produce the best fine quality art paper. States wood pulp is used for paper making not because its suitable, simply because its cheap and it is by product of the whole redundant logging industry but the available cellulose is some thing around 30% its really not very good and has to be processed with all kinds of toxic chemicals.

Since the invention of the wood paper process in the turn of the century the paper quality has deteriorated and so has the environment.

The water that comes out of the pulp plant as part of the pulp process has large quantities of chemicals that are toxic to marine organisms thus destroying our oceans. Those chemicals include dioxins; chloroform and a whole other combination of chlorinated organic compounds out of which over 2000 have been identified. Hemp on the other hand produces some where around 77% cellulose with very few impurities which makes it an ideal environmentally sound solution for paper making.

Realizing the problem associated with wood pulp paper the Dutch government has launched a major research project.

This involves 8 different research institutes to study Hemps potential as a fiber crop for paper making and other uses.

Hemp research will finally expected to open gates towards eco-friendly use and production of various products where we can use Hemp to fibers and around 50,000 products including paper, building materials, cloths, food, energy and much more in such a way that we will have a complete clean and energy efficient process that causes very little pollution and prevents trees from being cut down in other countries.

Hemp is ideal as it is resistant to a lot of diseases and it grows like a weed in the Netherlands, it can be grown wit out the use of pesticides or special regard to soil nutrients. It needs some fertilizer but not a lot.

Normally Hemp grows in quicker in hotter climates but even in the Netherlands Hemp is growing pretty fast in their climate.

The Dutch are proud of their perfect crop, which is three to four meters in height, commercial Hemp is also well established in France where they have licensed farmers to grow strains that are almost Drug free.Cultivation for the purpose of paper making in France really began around the year of 1960, so now there are between 3000 and 10 000 hectors.

It is used to make special paper, Hemp is one of the very few fibers in the world which contain a very high quality of fibers.The United Kingdom licensed Hemp in the year of 1993, and is already producing a variety of hemp products including quality writing paper.

In Tasmania Australia the government has allowed this experimental non drug strain crop of Hemp at the instigation of Patsy Harmsen.

In Australia we would be very foolish to disregard Hemp as it will solve a lot of our problems. One of our major problems soil degradation just like in the old days when Hemp was used to repair land after soil erosion it could just as easily be used these days for repairing our own soil. It’s a natural weed suppressant because of the way it grows, it grows on these tall skinny stalks which are the best fiber in the world.

Just with a thick canopy of leaves up above which just prevents any thing underneath from being able to grow.

The other great thing about Hemp is its long tap root, the tap root bines the soil together, the nutrients In the Hemp plant are concentrated in the roots, the leaves and the flower Head.

As we are growing it for fiber we only have to remove the stalk and the roots stay in the ground and the leaves and flower head are returned to the soil which means that you are returning most of your nutrients your only removing cellulose and water if your growing Hemp for paper or textiles.

Here I Australia we are virtually giving away our native forest at a price of roughly $70-$80 a ton.

Hemp on the other hand is a practical replacement and would fetch 400 at least. Jim young is one of the few voices in the Us paper industry calling for change. He is the executive editor of pulp and paper magazine. North America obviously has been blessed with an abundance of wood fiber but the citation is changing now and coming to the end of the line with the virgin timber and its time to look at other sources of fiber to be used in the pulp and paper process around the world. Hemp is without a doubt the most practical solution to use for future operations on a pulp and paper mill. The federal government has recognized the need for finding alternatives to wood pulp because obviously we are running out of trees and creating all the health effects. Way back in 1916 the united states department of agriculture published bulletin 404. They suggested using Hemp as an alternative to wood pulp. They discovered that an acre of Hemp would yield 4 time as much pulp as a wood fiber on a sustained yield basis.

Not only that, Hemp can virtually be grown in any climate in the world. Hemp grows like a weed enabling you to very easily supply the pulp mill with Hemp and save the few remaining trees. The textile industry justifiable should and is experiencing a re interest in Hemp.

Over 3 years testing of Hemp for wash and wear have been done, which gave the result of not the slightest wear and tear and or impression of the Hemp fiber its softens but doesn’t under normal circumstances weaken.

In terms per yield per acre Hemp out produces cotton by about 200 percent, and up to more under ideal suited conditions for the plant.

Unlike cotton Hemp can be grown entirely without pesticides. The cotton industry is basically a chemical industry highly dependent on the uses of pesticides at all stages of production right from the drilling of the seed to the harvesting which pollutes air, water and soil and eventually people. Cotton is the 4th largest export crop in Australia.

The cotton industry is the heaviest user of pesticides of any rural industry. The cotton industry and its negative health effects are made redundant by Hemp; we need different sorts of crop rotations and to use alternative fibers. We do have this very big environmental problem that the cotton industry does not want to recognize because of the business implications.

The technology is different for processing Hemp so it involves a bit of organization for setting up a Hemp production plant, but when you consider the health effects and how easy and in expensive to it is to grow as you don’t need maintenance and to pour money into chemicals, or to spend on annual medicine needed for people who are getting ill from being in the vicinity and being in among the pesticides, when you consider these glaring costs, Hemp is a far more beneficial crop. Prior to 1937 70 to 90 percent of all rope and twine was made from Hemp.

Advanced composites from annual fibers are a way to solve the forest crisis. Trees are cut down for fiber, if you take a Douglass fur tree the longest fiber is ¾ of an inch. Where Hemp is not a partial of an inch, it amounts to being Feet long. When you make composites there is a rule that says that if every thing else is equal, the longer the fiber the stronger the product, the truth of the matter is that Hemp is superior fiber to tree fiber in every way conceivable.

Here is an example of medium density fiber board, in all the strength tests Hemp turned out top be 2 to 3times stronger than the boards that were made out of tree fiber. Hemp can be made into any thing from a two by four to the body of a jet stealth bomber.

The food industry is looking for a water soluble bio degradable materials that they will be able to make food containers with in the future because the primary concern is to take away the material that needs to go into land fills.

The goal and aim is to make material that will fully bio degrade or be able to be recycled. It is possible to package hamburgers and where the trays could look along these lines.

Hemp has the capacity to be rediscovered as the new wave of the industrial revolution where a complete resurrect industry as in the past, 50,000 products can be derived from this fiber and from the oils and the seed.

Hemp seeds contain up to 40% high quality Oil, a combustible oil that is traditionally being used in lanterns.

A simple process also allows it to be converted into a relatively clean substance used for diesel bio fuel. In past centuries Hemp seed oil was also a major base for durable non toxic paints. Many great paintings are made from Hemp Oil on Hemp canvas.

In Ukraine Hemp Seed oil is still a major ingredient in the paint industry.

It is also a nutritious base for cosmetics and also is highly nutritious editable oil.

Hemp seed oil is unique in having such a high proportion of the omega 3 unsaturated fatty acids with a very strong cardio protective effect. Hemp seed has been used for millennium as a stable food by many people around the world; it has a near complete balance of essential amino acids second only to soy bean. Once the Hemp is in this form being all grounded and roasted you can create quiet a substantial diversity of dishes ranging from any type of bread recipe, like pancakes etc.

Hemp prohibition in Nepal led to a massive police eradication campaign in the early 90’s. But now only two years later a valley in Nepal is unified to defend its traditional Hemp industries, being primarily rope and Seeds. The region of Nepal is too high and dry to grow rice; hence they depend on Hemp seed for survival. Since 1992 the human union movement established a commercial paper, textile and oil industry. Hemp production in third world countries is a model for sustainable economic prosperity through out the developing world. Hemp can be used as a fuel source an oil source as well as a paper making fiber.

Could Hemp’s fuel generating capacity help us to kick our dependencies on highly toxic fossil fuels?

Carbon monoxide is the leading cause of death in Australia. It accounts for more deaths each year then all drug over doses combined. Over history it would be hard to predict how many people have died in history from gasoline who never knew it might killed them. It is a poisonous spreading material because it is distilled with benzene and xylene and toluene these toxic chemicals which are all known as carcinogenic materials.

An alternative Fuel Hemp can be used for ethanol production. Normal drinking alcohol also known as ethanol is the cleanest of all liquid fuels. Fast growing cellulose plants like Hemp can be made to produce this ethanol.

There is no smoke emitted from the exhaust of a car running from ethanol fuel. The emissions are virtually non existent. If one was to burn petroleum result would give off much smoke and toxins. Also when your engine is done burning on petroleum fuel; if you take it apart you can see the carbon deposits. With ethanol there are no deposits.

All plants are store houses of solar energy, and all plants can be distilled to produce ethanol fuel. Plants also produce the oxygen need to oxidize the fuel in a car, the emission being carbon dioxide and water re-absorbed by plants where it will result in a clean and balanced cycle.

When one reviews all the possible fuel we may use for transport use, ethanol emerges as about the only one that can achieve significant reductions in carbon dioxide accumulation in the atmosphere. Even a 10 percent blend lows emissions from 25- 30 percent, yet is non existent.

Blends are in use but only in a tiny minority of the United States and Australia, virtually UN heard off. Ethanol blends also eliminate the need for lead in fuels. Ethanol is being distilled from sugar Cain, grains or residue starch. Ethanol can also be added to diesel fuel. Buses running on this blend of ethanol fuel are emitting up to 40% carbon monoxide, 50 percent less smoke and up to 10% less nitrous oxide then straight diesel fuel.

In the context of ethanol making a significant contribution towards transport fuel needs, we need to begin producing ethanol, from cellulose or lignin cellulose. All plants have lignin & cellulose. Fast growing pants that are low in lignin and high in cellulose are most suitable for producing ethanol. Hemp is the most potential in all plants as the most products for human needs can be produced from it.

Research has shown from universities that ethanol could be produced economically on a small farm or community level. It could also become the worlds largest agro industry replacing petroleum completely.

Even the United States could produce all its fuel needs with ethanol, Australia no problem, all of our liquid fuel for transport can be replaced by ethanol. The United States was once the largest producer of Hemp. How did Hemp go from being a major crop to almost non existent in a span of 50 years?

Historical research done by a particular company suggests that is was the discovery of an efficient decorticating Hemp machine and the promised resurgence of Hemp to industry that led to the imposition of legal sanctions of the united states and the demise of the Hemp industry.

In the early 1930’s America remained highly labor intensive long after competing industries had mechanized further more other fibers like manila Hemp had begun to be imported from under developed countries where labor was dirt cheap. By 1930 the American Hemp industry bottomed out at around 1000 acres, but Hemp technology finally caught up and the Hemp crop expanded to 14000 acres in the next 7 years.

Hemp was poised to become the new billion dollar crop as reported in popular mechanics magazine written in 1938. A factory in Illinois had begun producing find bond paper from Hemp fiber, Hemp with its high cellulose content could also me made into more than 25,000 products ranging from dynamite to cellophane or plastics. But in the mid 30’s Dupont chemical patented a process to make nylon and plastics from oil and coal and a resurgence of the Hemp industry would seriously have threatened the emerging petrol chemical industries with there synthetic fiber nylon being invented in 1935. Dupont made a lot of money by selling their patented chemical paper fiber process and Hemp represented less chemically intensive way of manufacturing a higher grade paper, and consequently Dupont saw it as an economic competitor.

The Hemp prohibition was initiated by American petrochemical companies in the 1930’s to destroy the economic potential of Hemp, a blatant case of industrial espionage to remove competition from evolving petrochemical substitutes of natural fibers. This is why the prohibition was brought in 1938 and this is why the prohibition is MAINTAINED.

It is interesting to note also the way the legislation was conceived. A news paper head stared publishing articles calling the Hemp marijuana and presenting it as some thing Mexicans use to become intoxicated and abuse woman etc, this spawned many propaganda films including refer madness. At that time congressmen voting had no idea that marijuana was in fact Hemp which that country had been using profitable for centuries in their industry. Despite Hemp being a major fiber crop in America and the world last century mention of Hemp has been erased from museums and text books. This display in the history of American textiles in Washington smith shown eon institute contains no mention of Hemp.

When asked why, the museum curator replied ‘children don’t need to know about Hemp any more it confuses them’ similarly in the national textile museum there is no trace of Hemp either on display or in the library catalog. Another example of the Hemp cover up was the attempted destruction of all traces of the Us departments of agriculture’s film Hemp for victory.

This film made in 1942 was used to encourage patriotic US farmers to grow Hemp for the war effort. After 45 years of burial in government archives it was re discovered in 1989 by Hemp activist. Straight after the war hover the government once again abolished the Hemp industry and eventually criminalized the plant. One hundred years ago the farmer produced all of the fiber all of the medicine and all of the fuel and all of the food that the society consumed that’s what farming is, you raise those four basic categories, fiber, food, medicine and fuel and you sell the into the cities. These are the basic necessities of life Hemp can produce. By this process a portion of the money flows out of the city back to the land owner to the producer where land is the means for the production of wealth. It has been that way for thousands of years.

Today a hundred years later the farmer doesn’t produce any fiber, they do it with cotton which accounts for 50% of the pesticides and herbicides used in the agricultural process, who sells pesticides and herbicides?

The farmer doesn’t raise any medicine now its all been monopolized by the pharmaceutical companies, the farmer doesn’t raise any fuel its all been done by the petrochemical companies. And if you go into a grocery store and look at the ingredients on the packaging.

You can see for your self how rapidly the farmer is being displaced with this heritage of food production its all been taken over by the synthetic manufactures who in producing these synthetic products create the toxic waste and the hazards by products which we are having such a hard time dealing with. Not only it concentrated wealth in the hands of fewer and fewer people all the time but also the means of production of wealth is no longer the land, it is now the factories, shareholders and the people who control the controlling interests in those corporations.

Woodstock was an event, that is to say, something that didn’t just actually happen, but an actuality that came into being, when something—when many things—happened. A human actuality is a possibility that is immanent in us as a kind of freedom—and the event that represents that actuality to us is never simply identical to the specific temporal-spatial confluence with which history tries to pin it down. That’s why events like Woodstock are meaningful—the happening of them is not just the same thing as what happened at a specific place and time; nor are such events merely “symbolic” representations of abstract ideas, for they have a reality that, in important ways, exceeds mere fact or image.

Hence the hidden truth in the adage “If you can remember Woodstock, you weren’t there.” Because, no matter how drug-soaked your memories, even if you were there, there and then, the act of remembering—that is, the affixing of the experience to a specific temporal-spatial locus—circumscribes the event, makes of it a fact, more than an actuality. But for us to realize that actuality, we must somehow return there.

The paradox: to let Woodstock continue to be an actuality, so that we can be here with it, now, we must remember enough to want to go back there, then. What is possible is, of necessity, past.

This paradox was very present to the Woodstock generation itself, inextricably tied to the “innocence” we associate with the event. It was and still is often expressed in “Eastern,” Zen-style language, but the conception of time Woodstock invokes is also very Judeo-Christian: to take the journey to Max Yasgur’s farm was, as Joni Mitchell put it, to “get back to the garden,” that is, to the Eden before the creation of human history and time whose origins are, in Milton’s words, our “first disobedience.” Human freedom—which Richie Havens so memorably and spontaneously praised in song at Woodstock—exists only in human time, a kind of temporality that owes its existence to original sin.

If you are trying to reconnect to the groovy swirling sense of peace and love that was the 60s, what better place to turn for inspiration than the psychedelic posters of that era? In creating the poster for Taking Woodstock, designer Andrew Percival of Mojo House remembers how they got back to the Summer of Love: “We immersed ourselves in that world and culture, but at the same time were very sensitive to the geographic specificity of many psychedelic artists. In the end we created an amalgam of styles.” Such merging and marrying of design is, however, true to both the look and spirit of the movement, which borrowed freely from art history, and gave as generously to other design movements.

To tell the story of the event that is Woodstock is, necessarily, to follow narrative modes and conventions that treat the happenings of human history as unfolding in some kind of causal order. We assume that when we choose to narrate that one thing happened after another thing, we mean to understand that the earlier thing participated in the causes of the later thing. A “good” story often foregrounds the seemingly trivial details that later, surprisingly, turn out to have been “causes” for the story’s denouement.

In narrating Taking Woodstock, though, embraced a chain of events that were as accidental as they were causal; indeed, it is precisely the openness to and acceptance of accident that so inspires us about the Woodstock generation; and any proper narrative of that event should try as best it can to embody that openness. The scholar Gary Saul Morson, in his Narrative and Freedom, has written beautifully about how narratives need not “destroy the openness of time,” but can embrace contingency—and thus freedom—by creating what he calls a “plurality of temporalities.”

Astronomers have created time-lapse movies that offer astronomers their first glimpse of the dynamic behavior of stellar jets, huge torrents of gas and particles that spew from the poles of newborn stars.

When it comes to big-budget action movies, Rice University astronomer Patrick Hartigan prefers Hubble to Hollywood. Using Hubble Space Telescope images collected over 14 years, Hartigan has created time-lapse movies that offer astronomers their first glimpse of the dynamic behavior of stellar jets, huge torrents of gas and particles that spew from the poles of newborn stars.

An analysis of the movies that was published in The Astrophysical Journal is forcing astronomers to rethink some of the processes that occur during the latter stages of star birth. And in an effort to learn even more, Hartigan and colleagues are using powerful lasers to recreate a small-scale version of the solar-system-sized jets in a lab in upstate New York.

"The Hubble's given us spectacular images," said Hartigan, professor of physics and astronomy at Rice. "In the nebulae where stars are born, for instance, we can see beautiful filaments and detailed structure. We know these images are frozen snapshots in time, but we would need to watch for hundreds of thousands of years to see how things actually play out."

Hartigan said stellar jets are different because they move very quickly. Stellar jets blast out into space from the poles of newly formed stars at about 600,000 miles an hour. Astronomers first noticed them about 50 years ago, and they believe the sun probably had stellar jets when it formed about 4.5 billion years ago. Hartigan began using Hubble to collect still frames of stellar jets in 1994. The jets emerge from each pole of a young star, and Hartigan used Hubble to revisit the jets from three stars in 1994, 1998 and 2008. All three stars are about 1,350 light years from Earth. Two are near the Orion Nebula, and the third is in the southern sky in the constellation Vela. By lacing the images together and using a computer to fill in what occurred between still frames, Hartigan and his collaborators created time-lapse movies. The movies clearly showed something that wasn't obvious in any of the still images; clouds of dust and gas within the jets move at different speeds. "The bulk motion of the jet is about 300 kilometers per second," Hartigan said. "That's really fast, but it's kind of like watching a stock car race; if all the cars are going the same speed, it's fairly boring. The interesting stuff happens when things are jumbling around, blowing past one another or slamming into slower moving parts and causing shockwaves."

Understanding what happens in those huge collisions is another challenge. The phenomena didn't look like anything that Hartigan and his astronomer colleagues had seen. But when he showed them to colleagues who were familiar with the physics of nuclear explosions, they immediately saw patterns in the shockwaves that looked familiar.

"The fluid dynamicists immediately picked up on an aspect of the physics that astronomers typically overlook, and that led to a different interpretation for some of the features we were seeing," Hartigan explained. "The scientists from each discipline bring their own unique perspectives to the project, and having that range of expertise has proved invaluable for learning about this critical phase of stellar evolution."

Motivated by the results from Hubble, Hartigan and colleagues are conducting experiments at the Omega Laser Facility in Rochester, New York, to recreate small-scale versions of the solar-system-sized features captured in the movies.

"It's one more tool we have to better understand the underlying physics," Hartigan said.
