Articulated front end loaders are designed from the ground up to deliver the highest productivity in materials handling. Their whole chassis is designed to give a clear view out the front and to maximize the loading capability by having weight out past the rear axle. The superior all around visibility in a compact articulated front end loader also makes productivity in confined areas much higher as the operator isn't constantly concerned about damage to buildings, machinery, personnel or animals constantly on the job site. In a backhoe the engine obscures a lot of vision at the front and the rear is obscured with a folded up excavator mast.

2. Steering under load. Articulated front end loaders utilize strong rams to pivot the whole front chassis which steers the vehicle in the required direction. The powerful steering is required because under load the centre of gravity shifts approximately 2/3 of the whole machine onto the front axle, making it heavy under load if the steering isn't suitable. Backhoe's however are a compromise between an excavator and a loader and are built on a tractor chassis, with a front mounted engine. Backhoes generally have big wheels at the back for stability when the excavator arm is in use. This type of chassis design is taken from agricultural tractors which are designed to tow - this is the reason the big wheels designed for heavy loads, are mounted at the back and the small wheels, which are easier to steer, are mounted at the front. When the loader bucket is filled, the backhoe's centre of gravity shifts onto the front wheels and axles and CV joints, making it hard to steer. The CV joints must be made extremely strong for this reason as they take a lot of punishment when front loading, really the chassis is not optimally designed for this role in the first place. Articulated front end loaders however have rigid axles so they don't have any CV joints to get damaged, when the centre of gravity shifts forwards when loading - the steering is controlled by articulating the whole front chassis. This is just another reason showing that articulated front end loaders are truly designed from scratch for loading, particularly in the long run when maintenance costs are taken into account.

3.Loading speed. Backhoes can be used on job sites for loading trucks, however when you load with a big backhoe you waste a lot of diesel compared to loading with an articulated front end loader that is designed for loading. To operating a backhoe you need a lot of space to get in the right position to load and then to dump into the truck. The truck must be parked much further away from the pile of material to be moved as the tractor has limited maneuverability.
On the other hand articulated front end loaders operate easily in very confined areas so they don't need to travel as far to dump and get in the right position to load again. This is due to the very tight steering angle - one of the greatest advantages of an articulated vehicle. The most efficient compact articulated front end loaders on the market now have articulation angles of 47 degrees. Smaller articulated front end loaders, generally under 1750kg, have articulation angles of 60 degrees as they don't incorporate a drive shaft so the articulation angle can be made much higher.
The high articulation angle of modern articulated front end loaders allows them to easily manoeuvre in tight areas with ease to load trucks a lot faster, saving a lot of time and diesel compared to using a backhoe. Many people believe that an articulated front end loader, only half the size of a backhoe, will still load a truck faster. If this is the case, then you are using half the diesel, making incredible day to day savings in time and money.

4.Low operating height. Some modern compact articulated front end loaders are built with very low operating heights. Backhoes however have very large rear wheels and are made incredibly wide to give stability for the excavating hoe. Compact articulated front end loaders are much narrower and allow access to more areas on a construction site. This low height and narrow width allows access into buildings and demolition sites for construction and removal of debris, giving a higher utilization rate for the owner.

The low operating height also gives another benefit not realized at the beginning - the easy access for personnel to the cabin area means they get used constantly, for all jobs, as they are so convenient. Backhoes due to their large wheels at the back must have high cabin heights and constantly getting in and out can be chore, particularly for smaller tasks, so often the job is done by hand. Another advantage of the low height of compact articulated front end loaders is, when floating loaders from job to job, the total transport height is significantly lower and permits don't need to be obtained.

5.Centre of gravity. Articulated front end loaders are designed to maximize the efficiency of the weight they can lift at the front of the machine. The placement of counterweights and the longitudinal centre of gravity on an articulated front end loader, are designed completely differently to that of a backhoe. Articulated front end loaders incorporate weight, as far behind the rear axle as possibl, to make lifting at the front efficient. Significant weight as far out the back of the rear axle as practical, makes it possible to lift higher amounts at the front of the articulated front end loader due to the simple lever principle - the more counter weight out the back, the more effective it will be. Articulated front end loaders when unloaded have approximately 2/3 of the total machine weight resting on the rear axle, however when loaded the centre of gravity shifts to 2/3 of the total weight on the front axle.
Backhoe chassis on the other hand are built completely differently - one of the biggest differences being weight distribution - the engine is mounted at the front of the machine, as this style of chassis was originally designed for towing in agricultural use. The engine and a lot of counterweight is mounted at the front as the backhoe's excavator arm needs to be balanced on the backhoe. The longitudinal centre of gravity of a backhoe is closer to a 50/50 weight distribution on the front and rear axles. No matter how much weight is added to the backhoe, it will always be inefficient for front loading compared to an articulated front end loader due to the initial design of the backhoe. This means the tractor engine must shift a lot more weight when completing all loading tasks, creating more ground disturbance and compaction, greater tyre wear, axle wear and fuel consumption during loading.

6.View of front end when operating. Compact articulated front end loaders have a great view of the front end as this is where all the work occurs and the driver must have a great view if they are to perform work quickly and safely. The front chassis on an articulated front end loader is minimized in size and weight so maximum visibility is created for the driver. The mast is also designed to be as streamlined as possible so no interference occurs to the drivers view and anything else that could obstruct the view has been placed behind or underneath the driver eg. the engine.
The view from the front end of a backhoe is totally different - the forward mounted engine totally obscures the front working area so it is very difficult to see the working face and more guess work and less precise work is then performed with a backhoe compared to an articulated loader. Also the arms of the loader must be designed to go around the engine, making them bulkier and further obscuring the view.

Suttle Projects, based at Swanage in Dorset in the UK, has extended the company’s sheet piling capability with the purchase of a new Doosan DX140LC-3 14 tonne crawler excavator from Kellands (Plant Sales) Ltd, the Authorised Dealer for the Doosan, Bobcat and Montabert ranges for the whole of South West England.

Equipped with a Movax SG-30 side-grip piling hammer and filled with biodegradable oil, the new Doosan

DX140LC-3 excavator has just completed a project on behalf of the Borough of Poole Council, providing maintenance and protection works on the sea defences bordering Baiter Park in Poole Harbour.

Joe Paine, Managing Director of Suttle Projects Ltd, said: “The new DX140LC-3 excavator complements the larger Doosan DX255LC-3 25 tonne machine we purchased from Kellands at the end of 2013 and provides an extension to our sheet-piling capability for projects such as that in Poole, where a smaller machine is required.

“With the new 14 tonner in our fleet, we can carry out more of the intricate sheet piling jobs that are increasingly being required in and around small rivers and railway sites across the country. With over £1.5 million of contracts of this type a year over the last two years, our turnover in this area has grown significantly and we already have six jobs booked in for next summer.

“The purchase of a further new Doosan excavator demonstrates our belief that only the most modern and up-to-date technology should be used for our sheet piling work, a view that is not shared in every part of our industry. As environmental concerns increase, new generation equipment such as the Doosan DX140LC-3 excavator will be a prerequisite for work on projects of this type.”

Matching your bucket to your application is critical for optimized performance.

The biggest bucket does not necessarily translate into the highest production. Fill factors

and cycle times are what drive production, and larger buckets can reduce your cycle speed. Bigger buckets can also put high demands on the stick and boom. Depending on the job, twisting and torque can adversely impact hydraulics and overall durability.

Your best approach is always to match the boom, stick and bucket together based on the application and the job.

Material density can vary with weather conditions such as moisture, and that affects weight.

So if you’re working in those conditions, you have to factor in the increased weight and bucket fill factors. In some conditions, you might not be able to load a large bucket to full capacity if the density of material is heavy and hard to get through. In other conditions, a smaller bucket may out-dig larger buckets because the machine can cycle faster.

4000 Hour Oil Change Interval

A 4000 hour maintenance interval for hydraulic oil (change) is available. The extended interval requires S·O·S monitoring of the hydraulic oil. The interval for S·O·S monitoring is every 500 hours. The maintenance interval for the hydraulic oil filter is not changed. If S·O·S monitoring is not performed, the 2000 hour maintenance interval must be used.
Machines with hammers are not included in the 4000 hour maintenance interval. Machines with hammers must use the intervals that are listed in the Maintenance Interval Schedule. Machines that are used in severe conditions are not included in the 4000 hour maintenance interval. Machines that are used in severe conditions must use the interval in the Maintenance Interval Schedule.

Lubricants

Approved hydraulic oil must be used to obtain the 4000 hour hydraulic oil change. Refer to the list that follows for approved oils.

Relieve the internal pressure from the hydraulic tank by loosening the fill/vent plug. After the pressure is relieved, remove the fill/vent plug.

Install screen (8) and spring (7). Then install cover (6), washers (5), and bolts (4) . Note: Make sure that the O-ring seals and the spring are properly positioned during installation.

Fill the hydraulic system oil tank. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Refill Capacities".

Inspect the O-ring seal on the filler plug for damage. Replace the O-ring, if necessary. Clean the filler plug. Install the filler plug.

This Guideline enables dealers and the dealer's customers to benefit from cost reductions which were made possible through an established Contamination Control Program. Fluids used in Caterpillar machines are highly effective unless the fluid contains damaging amounts of contaminates. Therefore, every effort must be made in order to reduce the contamination level within Caterpillarfluid systems. Caterpillar makes ongoing changes and improvements to the Caterpillar products. This guideline must be used with the latest technical information available from Caterpillar in order to ensure that such changes and improvements are incorporated when applicable.

Summary

The following special instructions explain the use of the Caterpillar filter system 285-8095 filter system to prepare bulk quantities of new Caterpillar oils to meet fill oil requirements. The filter system combines a 1249 L (330 US gal) non-metallic storage reservoir with a filtration system. This filtration system has been validated by Caterpillar to remove contaminants that may be found in new oils shipped to Caterpillar facilities and dealerships. By following the instructions in the Filtration Procedure section below, new oils can be filtered to a cleanliness level of ISO 16/13. Caterpillar recommends that an automatic particle counter be used to initially verify the performance of the filter system in preparing fill oils. After the initial validation, automatic particle counts do not have to be completed every time, but audits should be routinely completed to assure the filter system continues to perform to specification.

ISO 4406:1999 Method for coding the level of contamination by solid particles

ISO (International Organization of Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards bodies. The ISO 4406:1999 specifies the code to be used in defining the quantity of solid particles in the fluid used in any given hydraulic fluid power system. An automatic particle counter derives the equivalent size of a particle from the particle's cross sectional area. Particle counts are affected by a variety of factors. These factors include procurement of the sample, the sample container, particle counting accuracy and where used and its cleanliness. Proper care should be taken during sample procurement to ensure that the sample obtained is representative of the fluid circulation in the system.
The code for contamination levels using automatic particle counters comprises three scale numbers. ExampleX/Y/Z.
"X" is the number of particles equal to or larger than 4 microns. "Y" is the number of particles equal to or larger than 6 microns. "Z" is the number of particles equal or larger than 14 microns.
At this time Caterpillar does not require the reporting of the "X" scale number since the hydraulic tolerances exceed the 4 micron value, therefore a "-" is used in its place. For example, a particle count is read as -/Y/Z, meaning that there was no requirement to count particles equal to or larger than 4 microns.

Filtration System Description

The complete bill of materials and instructions for operating the filter system are included in the Tool Operating Manual, NEHS0957. Following is a brief description of the major components of the filter system and why they are an important part of preparing new oils to fill Caterpillar machines and engines. A schematic is also attached at the end of this guideline.

330-Gallon Non-Metallic Reservoir

An essential requirement of the Filtration Procedure is that fill oils must be contained and stored in clean reservoirs during and after the process. The best way to accomplish this is by using a non-metallic reservoir or tote. One such tote is included with the filter system and additional units may be added to meet the specific needs of different Caterpillar facilities and dealers. See the 3-Way Inlet and Outlet Valves section below.

Centrifugal Pump

A centrifugal pump driven by a 3-phase electric motor is used to steadily circulate the oil through filters that remove debris and water contamination. Steady flow without interruptions and flow surges can be achieved by using centrifugal type pumps that maintain a uniform fluid velocity across filter elements. The steady flow of the centrifugal pump is preferred over the interrupted flow of a reciprocating pump. This uniform fluid velocity is necessary for the Filtration Process described below.

Ultra-High Efficiency Filter Elements

Removal of fine debris down to particle sizes of 6 microns and smaller is necessary to provide the cleanest possible fill oils. This cleanliness level is accomplished with filter elements designed specifically for Caterpillar. They have the same quality construction and excellent dirt holding capacity as the elements used on Caterpillar machines and engines.

Water Removal Filter Element

In many cases new oils have been found to contain free and emulsified water. Water vapor may also be present in new oils and depending on ambient conditions, it may change phase and become emulsified in the oil. Water droplets in lubricating oil will interfere with automatic laser particle counters and should be removed if possible. In addition, water levels of 0.1 percent by volume may be harmful to Caterpillar machines and engines and must be removed from fill oils. The water removal element included in the filter system has been selected and placed in a location where it will work in conjunction with the Ultra-High Efficiency filter elements to remove water contaminants.

Water Absorbing Tank Breather

The importance of water removal is addressed above. A tank breather is necessary to allow the air motion that occurs when filling a reservoir or when using the Filtration Procedure. The breather included with the filter system will remove airborne contaminants down to 4 microns and absorb some of the moisture present due to local ambient conditions. A desiccant color indicator is used to determine when the breather needs to be changed. Breather life will vary depending on the level of contamination and moisture in the air.

Filter Restriction Indicators

The filter system includes a pressure differential gauge on the ultra-high efficiency filter bank and a pop-up restriction indicator on the water removal filter housing. These can be used to indicate when filter element service is required. Refer to the Tool Operating Manual, NEHS0957.

3-Way Inlet and Outlet Valves

3-way valves on the centrifugal pump inlet and the return line to the non-metallic reservoir are included with the filter system. These can be used to change the flow path of the oil. Oil may be drawn from or returned to an external reservoir other than the 1249 L (330 US gal) tank included with the filter system. With proper positioning, the 3-way valves can be used to initially fill and filter oil in an additional reservoir. If the additional reservoir is another 1249 L (330 US gal) non-metallic unit, the filtration procedure below can be used for as many of these units as desired. For instruction on the proper settings for the 3-way valves refer to the owners manual and operating instructions for the Caterpillar filter system. Refer to the Tool Operating Manual, NEHS0957.

Filtration Procedure

Oil that will be prepared to fill Caterpillar machines and engines must first be transferred to the 1249.1853 L (330 US gal) non-metallic reservoir. The centrifugal pump of the filter system may be used to accomplish this if the oil temperature (viscosity) and the hose length to the storage reservoir are each low enough to prevent pump cavitation. Refer to the Tool Operating Manual, NEHS0957. During the process of transferring oil a sample bottle of the oil that will be prepared must be taken. This sample should be examined carefully with the naked eye. If visible debris or water is apparent an automatic particle count will be required at the end of the filtration time specified in Table 1. The particle count will verify whether or not the oil is ready to fill Caterpillar machines and engines. Heavily contaminated oil should not be run through the automatic particle counter.

Estimated Filtration Time

If the oil is below 25 °C (77 °F) the oil must be warmed for the following instructions to be valid. In order to reach fill oil cleanliness levels of ISO 16/13 for fluid power circuits, the oil in the filter system reservoir must be cycled through the filters 12 to 14 times. The process has also been shown to work on engine oils. With a proper pre-treatment procedure to reduce particle counts caused by additives in the oil, ISO cleanliness levels of 16/13 or better can be achieved for engine oils, which contain the most additive by volume. To achieve the 12 to 14 cycles through the filters, the following table of minimum estimated filtration times has been developed. See table 3 below, which lists the required filtration time for different volumes of oil contained in the storage tank of the filter system filter cart. Once the oil in the reservoir of the filter system filter cart has been cycled through the filters for the minimum time interval specified in table 3 it is ready to be used as a fill oil for Caterpillar machines and engines. The oil will remain in this condition for up to 14 days.

It is important to note that these are the minimum filtration times. Studies have shown that oil additive levels will not be harmed if these minimum times are slightly exceeded. However, extremely long periods of filtration are not recommended. Oil stored in the reservoir for periods longer than 14 days should be cycled through the filters again for the time interval indicated in 3. Do not exceed a total filtration time of 30 hours for a 1249.1853 L (330 US gal) or smaller volume of any Caterpillar fill oil.

Automatic Laser Particle Counters

Caterpillar facilities and dealerships that want to accurately measure the fill oil ISO cleanliness level using an automatic particle counter should use a pre-treatment procedure to offset the possibility that oil additives may be counted by the automatic particle counter as contaminant debris. Instructions for the pre-treatment procedure are detailed in Caterpillar publication oil sample pre-treatment procedure,Contamination Control Guideline, SEBF9086. It is recommended that this procedure be used initially to verify the performance of the filter system. The automatic particle counter should also be used to routinely audit the cleanliness of the new oils.

Personal injury can result from battery fumes or explosion. Batteries give off flammable fumes that can ex- plode. Electrolyte is an acid and can cause per- sonal injury if it contacts the skin or eyes. Prevent sparks near the batteries. Sparks could cause vapors to explode. Do not allow jumper ca- ble ends to contact each other or the engine. Im- proper jumper cable connections can cause an ex- plosion.

Always wear protective glasses when working with batteries.

1. Turn the engine start switch key to the OFF position. Turn all of the switches to the OFF position.

2. Turn the battery disconnect switch to the OFF position. Remove the key.

3. Disconnect the negative battery cable at the battery.

4. Disconnect the positive battery cable at the battery.

5. Disconnect the battery cables at the battery disconnect switch. The battery disconnect switch is connected to the machine frame.

6. Make necessary repairs or replace the battery.

7. Connect the battery cable at the battery disconnect switch.

8. Connect the positive battery cable of the battery.

9. Connect the negative battery cable of the battery.

10. Install the key and turn the battery disconnect switch to the ON position.

Air Conditioner/Cab Heater Filter (Recirculation) - Inspect/Replace Caterpillar

NOTICE

An air recirculation filter element plugged with dust will result in decreased performance and service life to the

air conditioner or cab heater.

To prevent decreased performance, clean the filter el- ement, as required.

The air conditioner filter is located on the lower left side of the cab behind the seat.

1. Slide the operator seat forward.

2. Slide the filter element upward.

3. Tap the air filter in order to remove the dirt. Do not use compressed air to clean the filter.

4. After you clean the filter element, inspect the filter element. If the filter element is damaged or badly contaminated, use a new filter element. Make sure that the filter element is dry.

5. Install the filter element.

Introduction of PC200-8 Hybrid Hydraulic Excavators

A goal has been set to make a contribution to society in challenging global warming, especially to reduce
the emissions of CO2, by developing a hybrid system that drives the swing device of a hydraulic excavator by
electric drive, to significantly reduce fuel consumption. Reductions in emissions of greenhouse gases are not
making satisfactory progress and regulation of the construction industry is also expected to become stricter in
the future. Under such circumstance, provisioning of products that promise lower fuel consumption to the
customers will win customer satisfaction, leading to activation of the market.
This introduction of product explains the outline of the sales of Komatsu’s PC200 hybrid hydraulic excavator series starting this spring aimed at an accomplishment of this goal.

2. Low Fuel-consumption Technology of

Hydraulic Excavator

The energy flow in typical work of a hydraulic excavator is illustrated in Fig. 1. According to this flow, 13.3% of energy is extracted as effective work and the rest is generally dis- carded as heat loss. During this process, the engine output is entirely converted into hydraulic energy in the hydraulic excavator and is distributed to each actuator. Energy conver- sion losses are generated between the engine and pump. Losses due to pressure loss and other losses are generated when pressurized oil is distributed. Furthermore, potential and kinetic energy of the work equipment and upper structure is converted into a meter out loss of the hydraulic system and is calculated as a loss. Compared with this, the hybrid system drives the upper structure by an electric motor, reduces energy conversion and transmission losses and regenerates kinetic energy of the upper structure. A dramatic reduction in fuel consumption reduction can be seen by optimally matching the depression effect of engine output thus obtained on an engine fuel consumption map.

3. Overview of Hybrid Hydraulic Excavator

(1) Full view of hydraulic excavator

A full view of Komatsu PC200-S Hybrid Hydraulic Excava- tor is shown in Fig. 2. The only difference in appearance compared with the base machine is the sticker, as the additional components required by the hybrid system are housed inside the existing space.

(2) Hybrid system

The hybrid hydraulic excavator consists of a swing electric motor, dynamo motor, inverter, capacitor and other compo- nents. Energy that is generated during deceleration of the swing electric motor when turning of the machine body decelerates is recovered as electric energy and stored in a con- denser called a “capacitor.” This energy is reused through the inverter during turning and is also used as assist energy during engine acceleration in excavation work. As a result, the engine revolution speed can be kept low also during idling to reduce fuel consumption. One characteristic of the “Komatsu Hybrid System” is the use of a “capacitor” to instantaneously store and discharge electric energy efficiently.

(3) Hybrid components

(a) Dynamo motor

The dynamo motor is built in between the engine and hydraulic pump, to dramatically enhance the transmission effi- ciency to the hydraulic pump. Electricity is efficiently gener- ated while the engine is idle and supplements storage of electricity in the capacitor.

(b) Swing motor

An electric motor that recovers energy during swing decel- eration was developed. The efficiency of the electric motor during acceleration is higher compared with the hydraulic motor, demonstrating smooth turning performance. Circula- tion of lubricating oil and cooling water for the electric motor is facilitated by a special case, which was developed for the hybrid hydraulic excavator. A special decelerator was also developed to meet high-speed operation, which is characteristic of the electric motor.

An inverter that integrates a booster, as well as a capacitor, is compactly installed on the vehicle. The reliability of each component is assured by installing a special water cooling device. A capacitor that can charge and discharge by migra- tion of electrons and ions is installed as a condenser. Charg- ing and discharging in a short time is therefore possible compared with batteries that require chemical reaction, enabling frequent engine speed variations of construction

machinery.

Theoretically, the inverter and capacitor are free of heat generation and deterioration, enabling long life and mainte- nance-free care.

(d) Capacitor

A capacitor was installed as a device to store the electricity of energy regenerated by turning. Automobiles with ad- vanced hybrid technology require a large amount of electric energy during starting acceleration and then run at a relatively stable engine speed. Therefore, batteries are installed in automobiles as electricity storage equipment. Compared with automobiles, frequent engine speed variations in a short time are caused with construction machinery by such as digging work, etc. and a capacitor was installed to follow and assist in this frequent engine speed changes.

The batteries installed in automobiles involve a chemical reaction and much time is required for charging and discharg- ing. An adequate assist therefore cannot be obtained, while the capacitor efficiently recovers and stores regenerative power and instantaneously discharges electricity.

(4) IT technology

The hybrid machine is installed with a “hybrid operation monitor” to assist ecological operation.

(a) Energy-saving navigation system

Fuel consumption during the most-recent five minutes is dis- played by a bar graph in the center of the monitor screen installed in the operator seat, to assist and encourage eco opera- tion by the operator. The screen can be changed to also display fuel consumption data of the most recent one hour, 12 hours, one week and one month.

(b) Energy monitor

The monitor screen can be changed to display status of capacitor charging and discharging and engine assist by the dynamo motor as an energy flow.

The components of the system and flow of energy among these components are displayed on the screen in the following color codes.

· Hydraulic drive energy

· Electric drive energy

· Regenerative energy

1) During work equipment operation + Start of swing

The work equipment is operated hydraulically by energy generated by the engine as in the conventional equipment. (Red arrows)

Swing is driven by electric energy from the capacitor and generator. (Yellow arrows)

2) During work equipment operation + Swing deceleration

Energy generated during swing deceleration is regenerated and is stored in the capacitor. (Green arrows) Some of the regenerated energy assists the engine through the dynamo motor and assists work equipment operation.

(5) Effect of low fuel consumption

Compared with the conventional machine “PC200-8,” the hybrid version saves about 25% of fuel on average*. In a user test, a fuel consumption reduction of 41% maximum was regis- tered at a work site at which the frequency of swing operations was high. This is because this system regenerates swing energy so that the effects of fuel consumption reduction vary depending on the load during turning, on the swing angle and on the frequency of swing operations. In work in which the swing angle is large, a reduction effect in excess of a nominal value of 25% can be obtained.

(6) Trial calculation of CO2 reduction effect

One-hour operation of a hybrid machine produces 10kg less of CO2 compared with a conventional machine. Assuming that all Komatsu hydraulic excavators operating in Japan are replaced by hybrid machines, about 370,000 tons less CO2 will be produced each year as a trial calculation, equal to about 153

4. Summary

The conventional hydraulic excavator system converts the engine output entirely into hydraulic energy and drives each actuator. Compared with this, in the hybrid system, the upper structure is driven by an electric motor, reducing energy conversion and transmission losses and regenerating the kinetic energy of the upper structure. The depression effect of engine output thus obtained is combined with engine fuel consumption matching, resulting in dramatic fuel consumption reduction effect. At the same time, the following technologies were established.

(1) Motor powering technology of swing device

The upper structure is driven by an electric motor replacing the hydraulic motor in the conventional hydraulic excavators. Motor control technology in machine operability, especially combined operations with other work equipment was estab- lished.

(2) Technology that regenerates swing kinetic energy

The voltage control technology of the storage battery was established for energy regeneration during deceleration of the swing electric motor.

(3) Total energy management technology for the engine, hydraulic pressure and electricity.

Power distribution individually for the engine, hydraulic pump and dynamo motor was decided and total control tech- nology to achieve optimum fuel consumption operation was established.

(4) Hybrid component development technology

A motor, inverter and capacitor were developed as compo- nents to deal with large loads of construction machinery. (Capacitor cells were purchased)

5. Conclusion

The history of hybrid construction machinery has just started. However, hybrid construction machinery is expected to be sold by the manufacturers of construction machinery as part of the measures against global warming and resource depletion, occupying a certain market share. The key point for spread- ing of hybrid construction machinery is cost reduction. Expectations are placed on the support of central and local governments as in a bidding system based on comprehensive evaluation of machines.

Technically, energy saving techniques by hybrid systems will be extremely effective for construction machinery, which has a wide variety of applications. Efforts on the further development of hybrid construction machinery will be continued.
