...Another Week in the Life of the Monster:

The Monster was wrestling her older brother, fell and hit her head on the wooden leg of the ottoman. She still has black eyes from it, but thinks they're cool.

The Monster was in the bathroom for a few minutes too long. I opened the door to discover that she had my makeup bag and had put mascara all over her face AND even WORSE, she used my scissors to cut more of her beautiful hair!!!! She has (correction: HAD) naturally curly hair that was all over the floor of the bathroom.

This is her Dorothy Hammill do AFTER. I pray that her curls return.

This is The Monster in one of her sweet moments with her baby brother.

She keeps us on our toes, but we sure love her!!

Courtney's Fitness Journal Week 21:

I am back down in weight after my mini vacation! So now I really want to press forward, and see 5 more lbs. gone!

I haven't done much, but just try to acclimate to our heat here in AZ. I usually just don't feel hungry for a couple weeks, and have to drink water all of the time. One thing that I'm sure has done the trick is to just put a few Manzanilla olives in my club soda, with a little of the juice from the bottle, and I just sip that all day. It makes me feel very full. It works, but it won't last...I know.

This is for me and Betina doing well this week...

Betina's Fitness Journal Week 21:

This is my last week of the Feel Great in 8!! I am down a little over 20lbs and definitely feeling great. We have all gotten over the flu and we are back on track! I have been eating the right foods, keeping my calories in check, and exercising for at least an hour 5-6 times per week. I discovered Laughing Cow Cheese Wedges which I put on whole grain crackers - makes a great snack. Have you tried those? Yumm....

This Week's Goal:

Finish out my last week strong!! And then take a week off and start again! 20 year reunion, here I come!!

How Writing Exercises Can Boost Your Blog...

Often, when thinking of a blog post to write, the first thing in your head is not how writing exercises can boost your blog. It's hard enough to just get it out and published, and many times you think, I'd better just get something up...it's been awhile.

It is true that you need to post often to help your blog stats, but instead of just throwing something up to have it there, stop and think first of how writing exercises can be incorporated into each post and title, to make it even more worthwhile for your blog, and help your search engine traffic.

When you have an idea for a post, the first thing you should do is go check the Google keyword tool.

Is there a keyword that corresponds to what you want to write? Do you have posting themes you write about every week, and are there keywords that could be used?

It's a lot easier thinking of an interesting topic first that you know will flow out of you, and that your readers will enjoy, and then go check to see if you can incorporate a highly searched word that fits, rather than the other way around.

This is a good way to start writing exercise practices in all of your blogging. Ultimately, you will want to be doing both strategies...your idea first, and the keyword that fits after, as well as the keyword first and the post after.

If you like to blog and write, you might think how writing exercises could get very tedious and tiring, but really, if you are spending the time on your blog like everyone else is(a lot), why not try to constantly improve your skills, and get the most out of it?

You can still enjoy yourself through the challenge of it, and seeing improvement feels good anyway!

It's still always going to be easier to throw up the Wordless Wednesday photo, and by all means do it. We need those days, but we also need an environment that gets us moving towards these traffic boosting exercises.

Fitness Journal: Online & Brutally Honest...Week 20

Courtney's Fitness Journal Week 20:

I had a week of travelling. First on the Amtrak train from Arizona, through New Mexico and to San Antonio. Then up through St. Louis to Chicago for my step-daughter's Law School Graduation.

There weren't too many places to exercise on the train, but I at least fit in a good walk around downtown Chicago today, and did my usual Brazilian Booty lift exercises and yoga in the hotel room.

I don't even want to look at the scale! I'm sure it's outrageous...

This Week's Goal:

Get back to normal.

Betina's Fitness Journal Week 20:

It has been the week from HELL!! The Hubs was in Germany for work, all four kids were sick, and now I'm sick. It's awful. This has led to survival meals like cereal, mac & cheese, sandwiches, and other meals that are not the most healthful. I also was BARELY able to exercise. But I did lose 1lb.

This Week's Goal:

Get well!! And then get back on track with everything!!

I have a sick friend, who is preoccupying my mind, which is also making me work out more. Keeping busy like that makes the worrying subside temporarily. The worrying also has me eating less. My clothes are definitely loser, but I didn't weigh myself. Sometimes that scale just needs to be tucked away for a bit.

Keep my spirits up and my sense of humor...

I am still going strong. I've had a few cheats here and there this week, but still lost 2lbs and am learning how to have those cheats and make up for it in other ways. That's only taken me 18 years to figure out.

I still want to to 2-a-day workouts with little exercises in between throughout the day on a more consistent basis. I know that this would get me to goal even faster and then I would just have to maintain. May the force be with me this week......and always.

Don't you feel like this doing your fitness routine, and Gandalf is the scale?...

Still the same for me, but I'm in my 40's now, and I think it's just the new reality. I might see a change after working hard for a year and a half! My clothes feel good and lose though, so the scale has to be more of an after thought. I still want to scream like Anakin every time!

This Week's Goal:

Keep adding more exercises, but not food!

Betina's Fitness Journal Week 18:

Last week, I was literally yelling, "I HATE YOU!! CURSE YOU, WICKED SCALE!!"

This week, I am saying, "I LOVE you, my bathroom scale!" I lost 3lbs this week. YES!! I didn't do anything different, except try to put a little more ummph in my workouts.

I am pumped and re-motivated and rearing to go!!

This Week's Goal:

I have a bit of a lofty goal this week. I want to lose 5lbs. I think I can do it. I think I can, I think I can......

I am going to be super diligent on eating (at least try) and give even more to my workouts. This morning I went on a bike ride with my friend, who is on this journey with me and is just as competitive as I am. We decided to go into this gated neighborhood to race the straightways and recover on the bends. When I say race, I mean give it EVERYTHING I've got. Competition really works for me. Have I mentioned that before? So we were racing each other, pushing each other. She'd win one, I'd win one.

It.was.FUN!!

Plus, my Lose It App says that I burned about 650 calories doing this! I might be addicted after only one day.

How To Keyword

Last week, I introduced Club-Content's Keyword Challenge as a writing exercise our Club-Content members are working on, and this week I'll explain How To Keyword, or how to use a keyword in your blog post.

First, you need to choose a keyword or keyword phrase, and it needs to be something you want to write about, or have interest in. Think of something you already have planned to write, and then go and visit Google's Keyword Tool.

You can plug in that word or phrase that you would like your blog post to be about, and see how much it is searched by the public.

For example, How to Keyword is my phrase for this post, and when I click on the Global Monthly Searches it receives on the Google Keyword Tool, it has 2,740,000. It also has 1,000,000 Local Monthly Searches. Additionally, it has low Competition, meaning I am not competing with a high amount of similar searches by using my phrase.

So far, off to a good start!...

For instructional purposes, I'll be highlighting each of the important steps in red that you'll need to include in your own post...

You can see that I have it as my Post Title, and I have it in my very first sentence. I also have it in BOLD font in my first paragraph, and I have it Italicized and linking to another page on my blog in my fourth paragraph.

Not only is it Italicized and linking to another page on my blog, but by highlighting my phrase, and linking it to that other page, I have used my phrase as anchor text.

Anchor Text is the visible, clickable text that is also a link to another page or site. This linking text has an impact on your Google page rank and with search engines, because your text is giving a user relevant and descriptive information about the content of the link's destination.

How To Keyword right in a blog post, is about the number of times it is used as well. Over using a word or phrase can actually hurt your rankings, because you can be punished for it. Google wants to offer interesting and relevant information, and an article that is just that certain word over and over is really annoying frankly.

Google has customers it needs to satisfy, and not be annoyed. When Google customers are searching for something, they want to find it.

Have you ever come across that? You search a particular word, and get all of these unrelated sites? They just used that word, knowing that it is highly searched. These sites might be up at the top of the indexing for a short while, but they will ultimately lose their spot, and will have trouble with page rank in the future for doing it.

Now you can see that I have Underlined my phrase, and used it as anchor text to an outbound site with a good reputation, such as Wikipedia.

There are other steps you can take if you are using WordPress, and are covered in steps 8 & 9 of Club-Content's Keyword Challenge.

Finally, after going through these steps, and applying them to a piece of work you truly enjoy writing, and want to share with your readers, you will accomplish the most important part of blogging...providing value, and making that human connection. Just don't forget to include your word in your very last sentence.

How To Keyword is a necessary skill to practice for blog improvement, but all of those human blog readers are what make that whole Internet world go 'round.

LITTLE COMEDY CLUB......CHORES

Little Comedy Club...

Like most children, mine hate doing chores. Except for B. She is and always has been my little cleaner. She loves to clean and does a really good job of it too. And she's only 5. I think she gets it from my Grandma Mae, who was completely OCD about cleaning and organizing.

I inherited that gene, although it was recessive throughout my childhood and adolescence. Just ask my sisters....ha!

Often, I will find B leading The Monster into the kitchen to get big cups of water and paper towels. They plop themselves right down on the kitchen floor and start cleaning it by hand. This was never my idea. Only B could come up with that one. She says that you can do a much better job of getting the floor clean that way. I love that girl.

I try my darndest on the the others to get them as excited as she and I are about cleaning and organizing. We play all sorts of games to make it fun.

I pretend I'm SuperNanny (my kids love her) and I use my best British accent and tell them what rooms to clean and how to do it. Sometimes we pretend that the kids are a special cleaning company and I am the client who calls them to hire them.

They each take turns "answering the phone". We will blast the ipod and try to clean a room before the song ends. Recently, I had my ipod on shuffle and the one of the songs from The Sound of Music soundtrack came on. I LOVE this movie and I LOVE this soundtrack.

Apparently, so do the kids. As soon as it came on, they got a skip in their step and kicked into high gear on their chores. My son said, "This is so fun! I'm so happy right now!" Ha ha!!

An Online Brutally Honest Fitness Journal: Week 17...Trying to Be Fit & Fabulous!

Looks like Betina and I are both at an impasse this week. I'm still stuck, but maintaining. Always good to maintain, but you need to see new progress for continuous motivation.

It made me think of Gandalf in Lord of the Rings fighting that big beast thing in the Mines of Moria. Like, some sorcerer power is holding us back. Then, I found this video...it's Gandalf vs. Anakin Skywalker.

Betina's Fitness Journal Week 17:

Well, this week I only lost .6 of a pound. I was really disappointed because I have continued to follow the program. Ugh. Really disappointed. I still can't figure out why that happened. I expected to lose at least another 2lbs.

I just plan to stay the course and hope for the best. I still need to step up my exercise. Hopefully that will burn more fat!!

A little breakthrough!

Club-Content's Keyword Challenge...

One of the writing exercises we offer at Club-Content is a Keyword Challenge. Our members focus on a particular, highly searched keyword, which suits their blog themes, and they then write posts based on their chosen keywords.

After, they will get to enter their keyword posts into a Contest for honest, anonymous feedback from all Club-Content Members.

This is an exercise not only for strong, engaging writing, but to bring Search Engine Optimization into that content and engagement with readers.

So why are keywords so important? They can get you indexed by Google, and found online...your blog audience grows!

Keywords are not just single words, but are also highly searched phrases. When I refer to keyword, I am also including all keyword phrases as well. For example "blog" is a keyword and "content" is a keyword and "blog content" is a keyword phrase.

There are some basic guidelines to writing a post using a keyword or keyword phrase.

1: Be Interesting and Relevant

Google wants to present interesting and relevant sites in a search. Your keyword needs interest and relevancy, but also needs to fit your blog theme. Topics you are interested in yourself, will translate in your writings. Always choose a keyword you find appealing, and your writing will flow more.

2: Keyword Appears in Title

The keyword should appear in the title of your post, and also at the very beginning of your title.

3: Article Length & Appearance

Your keyword article should be about 500 words in length and should have roughly 5 paragraphs. This is a standard you'll read from some SEO guru, but I personally believe in writing for the computer screen, and breaking some of the standard rules.

Remember, Google is a robot, and you have real people who need to read your blog too.

4: Keyword Placement in Your Article

Your keyword should appear in both the 1st sentence of your article and the last sentence.

* 1 Occurrence of keyword = Bold

*1 Occurrence of keyword = Italic

*1 Occurrence of keyword= Underline

5: Link to Another Page of Your Blog Using the Keyword as Anchor Text

When you highlight a word and then insert a hyperlink, you have created anchor text. For example, instead of typing out the URL address to click on "(www.mommyladyclub.com)", type "Mommy LaDy Club", highlight it, and insert the proper link address from your editor.

6: Create an Outbound Link to a Reputable Website

Highlight your keyword, and link to an outside website with relevant information. An example of a reputable website would be Wikipedia.

7: For WordPress, Add an Image

WordPress allows you to highlight your keyword, and insert a link to an image. Be sure to title the image your keyword, and use your keyword as the alternate text field in your editor. Where it wants you to "link image to" be sure to click on "none". Then click "insert into post".

You can use your own image, or from a royalty free site like, stock.xchng

8: For WordPress, Add Post Tags & Replace Default Tagline with Your Keyword

You'll find an area to add your keywords as post tags, adding each one separately. After publishing your post, you can find your Default Tagline from your Settings. Just change it to your keyword and update.

9: Try Not to Over Use or Under Use Your Keyword

Your keyword should occur about 2-3% of your entire article. It's best to just concentrate on writing something really good. You know if you're over using your word, and trying too hard, and so will your reader, and so will Google.

Just use common sense, and try to be engaging and interesting always.

LITTLE COMEDY CLUB......THE MONSTER IS 4!

Today is The Monster's 4th Birthday! Happy Birthday to my fearless, daring, funny, smart, clever, sweet (sometimes) little Monster. This family would be pretty dull without you!

My oldest son said, "When she was three she talked like a baby and now that she's four she talks like me!!" Amazing what a difference a day makes. :)

A few nights ago, The Hubs was tucking The Monster into bed and she said, "Oh, Daddy! Smell my fingers - they smell like strawberries!"

The Hubs smells her fingers, expecting a fresh fruity smell. "Blyeck! Gross! What is that smell?", he asks.

The Monster, with a smirk on her face, replies, "Gotcha! I was just scratching my bum!!" Do you see why she is called The Monster?

My other daughter, B, asked me, "Mom, did your mom make you whatever you wanted for breakfast when you were little?"
Me: "No, we always ate whatever she made us for breakfast, though."
B: "That doesn't sound very good. I think we should change it and you make us whatever we want every morning."

Ha!

Last night we took the kids to eat at this little Mexican food place. As we were eating, the waitress was bustling around the other tables, cleaning up. B said, "Isn't it nice they clean up after everyone? We should stay and help her clean up."

B is hands-down, my best helper at home. She seems to get it and that makes me sooo happy!!

Courtney's Fitness Journal Week 16:

I am still maintaining!...unbelievable, and the best part is that my husband said to me the other day, "You are looking skinny."

This is huge!! My husband will shock me at times, when he comments on someone being chubby on TV, and trust me, the person is not fat. For example, I would say Jennifer Lopez is not in any way fat, and my husband would say, she's looking a little chunky...

This Week's Goal:

Stick with the Brazilian Booty Lifts, the kettle bell exercises, a little yoga, and keep trying to add a run. So far, I haven't fit that in, and I know it would make a huge difference. Of course, I'm eating like a bird too.

Betina's Fitness Journal Week 16:

I'm on a roll! I am down a little over 12lbs! It could be more but I haven't weighed in since Thursday. I am still feeling great and the clothes are getting a little looser. I was told that the third and fourth weeks are the hardest ones and I would agree with that. I have to keep my willpower in check.

I had a discussion with some friends today about fruit. On my program, we have to eat three servings of fruit per day. There was some debate about how fruit can get in the way of weight loss because of all the sugar in fruit (it's natural sugar, of course). Any thoughts?

Cherishing a Hotel Moment
Our last hotel visit was not for a vacation. It was a stop towards our new life in a new city in a new state. In August 2007, three months after we bought our first house, the housing bubble burst. We decided to have Riley thinking that we'd still be ok, however, we had to close our custom cabinet company about a year later.
Work was not easy to find in Florida since the construction industry was huge there. Work was especially hard to come by for someone who had been his own boss for over 10 years. We came by some unscrupulous companies and individuals that just wanted to hire cheap labor. The money coming in wasn't paying the bills and with a baby on the way (wouldn't you know it, I get pregnant and all hell breaks loose!), the added expenses were terrifying.

A few months before Riley turned one year old, we decided to look elsewhere for steady employment. I expected to move to North Florida, but North Georgia became the answer. A woodworking company in Summerville, Georgia needed an estimator, which was what my husband had been doing for years. Salary, benefits, vacations, it seemed wonderful! A week after Riley's birthday, Chris went up there and was put up in an efficiency hotel until he could find a house to rent.

The two weeks we spent apart was the worst weeks of my life. Little did I know that the upcoming week in the efficiency was going to be just as bad! Imagine a fresh one year old in the tiniest square box you've ever seen. The hotels were pretty much up the side of a mountain, smack dab next to the main road coming into the city of Rome. There was no where in Summerville to live, so Rome was the nearest city south. There was no where for him to run or play or even to take a walk with his stroller. I would have usually relished in getting out to do the laundry, but there were no doors in the designated laundry area and my son likes to roam. We were out of that efficiency as fast as we could!

It was an emotional time for me. I was away from my family for the first time in a place where I didn't know anyone. Chris had befriended the guy that stayed in the room next to us. I feel awful that I don't remember his name now or what he did for a living. He was there with his company and he would go from city to city doing what ever hard labor was needed. When I pulled up to the hotel that first night, he helped bring everything up to the room that I had brought. He was a redneck for sure and I felt home again!

That next day was Easter Sunday. As we were getting ready to go to a new church, he went to the Dollar General next door and bought an Easter bunny (only pink ones left!) and some candy for Riley and placed it at our door. We didn't know it was from him at that time, but he always kept his door open and we were able to ask him if he saw the person that put it there. Of course I cried right then! That was the kindest act of love I had witnessed from a stranger. I will never forget that day or ever get rid of that bunny!
