The Humble Serving Tray.

My original quest was to make paintings and create images by hand to capture my audience. I still paint and draw but I found another wonderful way to showcase my ideas and designs. I started embellishing the humble tray quite by accident.

The Rickshaw Tray

I never thought of paintings on trays before and spent a great deal of time and effort creating complicated mosaics to embellish trays. It was a vintage tv tray absently thrown in a garage sale that caught my eye. I am talking about the metal ones you might have seen like the one below.

Here is my rendering of the tv tray that I like to think of more as a butler’s tray, or a folding table in mosaic tile.

have always loved detailed intricate art and painting. As a child I spent hours staring at a book of paintings acquired from the red fort in Delhi containing prints from Akbar’s Hamzaname and many more delightfully detailed Mughal miniatures. Much of my painting derives its source from this inspiration and the same goes for the digital images I create.

The Karachi Lahore Table Tray

This tray is inspired by a decoration of an old shipping lines company I found on a vintage matchbox. Karachi is a bustling port city and has been for over a century. Goods travel between Karachi and Lahore often via the large painted trucks. People are always commuting between the two cities. Mall Road and Queens Road are the old colonial names that have persisted despite many attempts to rename these bustling thoroughfares in the heart of the cities of Karachi and Lahore.

And there is the unending quest to create the image that will be in essence from Pakistan. This is why I made trays that are fun images of Karachi, Lahore and Pakistan as we know it.

The mosaic trays are like an extension of my painting. I keep returning to watercolor as my medium of choice because I think the fragmented, fractured image holds my imagination. I am constantly deconstructing my world and putting it back together, something a mosaic artist will truly understand. There is a lot of historic mosaic which I have deep respect for and want my audience to appreciate. I will reproduce it and even the humble tray deserves its application for it to transcend to something, that has been painstakingly rendered into an object of unique art.

My aim to produce more items that are personal, handmade and a constant pleasure to my customer has me trying to fashion that perfect product all the time.

I have lived in a few different countries and seem to love them all often with great nostalgia. I seem to tear up every time I hear a national anthem although I have no affinity to any single country and abhor wars and conflict based on politics and borders. I have had this idea that all of us identify with some place geographically, whether we live there, visit it or spend some happy moments there. Isn't this why people buy souvenirs?

On a recent trip to Spain I made it a point to visit their gift stores and felt a little sad that I couldn't find more personal items to take back home with me. I bought a lot of their marzipan, cheese and edible goodies but not much more. But I was surrounded by Gaudi's mosaic and it inspired me to come back home and create wall art that was lively and yet must mean something to the residents of all those lovely villas he designed.

Mosaic art lovers like me love to see pattern and form take shape from the careful construct of laying tile and building a mosaic piece by piece. I thought of flags people could identify with and the ancient mosaics of Pompeii. They might be versions of replicas but sometimes an image can lead to a labyrinth of happy memories. Meandering through and witnessing the grand mosaics of Alhambra and Seville and the cheerful art of the new of the majestic Gaudi seems to have inspired me in this direction! What do you think?

My Paintings, The Eternal Bloom Series

I have always loved paintings. As a child I spent hours pouring through pictures of Classical paintings and the art of the 20th Century as seen in the dusty 24 volume Caxton Encyclopedia on my parents' bookshelf. I studied and reproduced what I could. This was the art training I put myself through as a young teenager.

Living in the Middle East in the 80's the only library available to me was the school library with a limited supply of art publications and a handful of book stores. I frequented the bookstores in hope of an arrival of fresh stock and more books on art. The act of painting, swishing my brush in tubs of color, squeezing out pasty reds and blues from tubes and the delicate trace of a paint brush across stark paper, has been my delight all these years. I have collected many sketchbooks, constantly trying to better myself, forever the unsure artist always trying to capture something in color and form.

In this new series of watercolors I have tried to bring together all my years as a mosaic artist, my extensive research on Mughal painting and my genuine love for miniature art and illuminated art of the Indian subcontinent. Color in watercolor has a transparent subtlety to it and the medium gives you the precision of a brush strand. I can feel the curve and softness of a petal and can run my fingers through the downy feathers of a bird with paint and brush.

I have been painting the Eternal Bloom series for the past year and a half. The paintings talk about creation, life and death, our relations with nature.

I want to talk about our minds' image of paradise and the violence of death juxtaposed by the beauty of life and the love between beings and the silent workings of the supernatural that we imagine or not in our lives. The feminine figure in my art is death and life and love, an effigy or semblance of a woman of the subcontinent, her paisley attire, melting into a background of webbed flora, in a world that has many levels of reality and dream.

Eternal Love on a Mountain Top

The taxi that came to take us back to our train for Turin at Avigliana after a grueling climb up to the Sacra di San Michele was late. The abbey towered over the valley so that the towns like St. Ambrogio and Avigliana at the base of the mountain were clay red rooftops, barely visible, like punctuations in an emerald green landscape. It was late afternoon as we packed into the taxi and I wondered if I could nap for the brief ride to the train station.

The driver, a man in his late 70s, spoke Italian but I could catch a few words, enough to keep the conversation going. I listened to him as he proudly talked about his town, Avigliana, pointing to the ruins of the castle on a cliff and the picturesque lakes in the center. Then, in mid conversation he reached for a small picture of his wife stuck to the dashboard with a small plastic heart stuck on it. As we passed by the Church of San Giovanni he raised the picture of his wife towards it and said a little prayer, kissed it and then paused, to take a last look at the tiny photograph and then continued on.

For the rest of the way and the train journey back I kept thinking about the man being separated from his wife by death. I was sad for him and yet happy for him that he found a love so strong that her passing did not stop him from having her in his thoughts all the time.

So much is written about love and sometimes it seems hopelessly dramatized or alternately trivialized in teenage romances. I read The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock by T.S. Eliot in college and reread it recently and think of all the triviality of life and how sometimes we tend to overlook what is meaningful in life and relationships. Death is the ultimate separation but does that mean your memories die with someone? I think memories are living, they bloom and grow.

I found this beautiful translation of Faiz’s poem about love and separation, dasht-e tanhai mein sung by Iqbal Bano and it translates to English on screen as you hear it. Love and death are themes that repeat themselves in paintings and poetry, in art and sculpture. The story of the taxi driver from Avigliana is everywhere. Sometimes all you need is a small gesture to remind you that life and love can be eternal only if you want it to be.

Urdu Poetry, Art and Inspiration

I was never taught Urdu in school but enjoyed listening to Urdu ghazal or poetry put to music with my father when I was younger. With time I must have lost interest until one day in college at McGill in Montreal, bored with completing some dry assignment, I came across a bookshelf in the library with a few Urdu books. One of the books I picked up The True Subject was a translation of poetry by Faiz Ahmed Faiz done by Naomi Lazard. The book itself was simple; the Urdu verse written on one side and its translation in English on the other. But to me it was like a key to the Urdu words I used to think were impossible to decipher. Thus started my interest in Urdu Poetry and I went on to find many more translations and spent many snowy afternoons in the cold winter solving the complex encryption of Urdu poetry. Imagery in Urdu poetry is a language of its own and symbols are used to convey a kaleidoscope of emotion. I confess I never went as far as discovering more contemporary Urdu poets, but often when I paint I like to form the Urdu words of classical poetry in my head and let my mind wander through the landscape of images and metaphors my synapses create.

There is a very famous poem by Faiz called

Gulon mein rang bhare baad-e-naubahaar

Chale bhi aao ke gulshan ka kaarobaar chale

let the blooms fill with colour, let the first zephyr of spring flow
do come over, so the garden can get on with its daily business

that brings together nature and human feeling in a most intimate and animated way. I like to think about nature conspiring with human emotion so that flowers droop in expectation and a soft breeze curls in excitement. My hand wanders with the same spontaneity over my watercolor as the colors the Urdu couplets bring to my mind.

This particular painting started off with an idea that sprung from this Ghalib couplet.

Sab kahan kuch lala-o-gul main numayan ho gayien

Khak mein kyaa sortein hon gee k pinhan ho gayien

Not all, only a few have become evident as tulips and roses;

What images may lie in the dirt that remains hidden from us?

It makes me think about death and the cycle of life, not as a morbid pantomime but more as nature’s secret celebration, hiding its intricate industry of continuation.

Much of the design I use for the Craft Company has its inspiration in this natural paisley that has its roots in ancient design in India and Pakistan. I feel the conversation does not end with just poetry and art but continues with every aspect of life and the things I create.

Women's Day in Pakistan

There is genuinely so much bad press surrounding Pakistan. Lets face it, this is hardly a country that is prosperous and peaceful. It is a developing country, debt ridden, challenged on all its borders and with conflict that is not only internal but so intrinsically sectarian that the different layers are almost indecipherable. All this to say that the challenges this country faces may seem insurmountable but we must not forget this is a vibrant, deeply cultured and complicated society. We are descendants of some of the oldest civilizations and our tenacity is richly reflected in the heritage of our art, food and tradition.

It saddens me then to see the essence of Pakistan being lost in this turmoil of terrorism and eternal conflict. There is another face of Pakistan which sparkles despite the despair. Children still go to school, celebrate their birthdays, organize cricket or soccer matches and more. Every day thousands of homes light up celebrating marriages, religious and cultural festivals and the like. There is dynamic art, drama, theater, cinema and sport which thrives as do restaurants and night life.

Of all the negative attention Pakistan gets, the plight of women is often at the forefront. There is no doubt that there are many issues regarding women in Pakistan that need to be resolved but there is also so much progress. There are more and more women in the performing arts, the fashion industry, journalism and more. They are educators, doctors, entrepreneurs, bankers and members of parliament and in the foreign service.

Women in urban areas in Pakistan have real issues but these may be comparable to many other countries like India and China where urban populations are reaching unmanageable heights, but to say Pakistan is a level apart from them in its treatment of women's issues is unfair. This is not to say that there aren't many injustices because there are, but not grossly disproportionate to many large cities in developing countries. There are more and more women joining the work force everyday as families grow and a single income is insufficient to support a family.

The malicious intent of extremists who throw acid on women or push them onto a burning stove is acknowledged but we can also look at the gentler side of Pakistani society.

If you were to visit Karachi, Lahore and other cities in Pakistan you will see women are a strong presence in the work force and in daily life. Many women in cities dress modestly but are not forced to wear the veil as in some Islamic countries, they have a choice. Women can drive, attend schools and colleges, enjoy cafes and go to the movies - choices available to women in developed countries.

A New Year!

The Craft Company has had a great year this year with many new developments and novel ideas inspiring it. The year ended with The Craft Company being featured in Libas International magazine's annual issue and I am so proud of all my workers and the work we do.

The article talks about my use of Mughal icons in my work. The Noor Jehan painting I keep returning to has a haunting quality to it. Like an elegant, ethereal Botticelli the artist seems to have captured her with mystery, beauty and tenderness.

Saba Imtiaz who wrote the article is an eminent journalist captured the mood of the Craft Company and my love for creating things eloquently.

There are so many more things to do this year and with the city and the country in so much turmoil I wish we can keep going despite the distractions. My article in the Express Tribune this week talked about the Politics of Hatred that is so prevalent in Pakistan. It is so sad that the people of Hazara have to sit in on the streets and wait to bury their dead in hope that justice will prevail. I have been looking into the history of these people and their sad persecution over the years. There is so much buried animosity inherited by whole tribes of people that just does not end and is lived and relived by each generation. Instead of trying to quench the diversity of the people of this country why not celebrate it and respect people for their own religion, their tradition and embrace the multiculturalism that is the subcontinent.

I looked up the Hazara people of Pakistan and their favorite meals, a flat bread stuffed with pumpkin and different kinds of vegetables called Bolani or Pirki and I have found a recipe for it. I am going to try and make it tonight and in a small way try and learn more about the people of Hazara.

I have a very large collection of old books I found scouring the old bazaars in Karachi when I had developed a wanderlust for the city over a decade ago. At the time I had a weekly column in the national newspaper and wrote about art happenings in the city and was always looking for a fresh perspective to keep my readers interested. This was before internet was widely available and if working, was extremely slow (shudder), so I would go out and collect old books to pour through. Needless to say I discovered a hidden treasure out there.

I still rely on these books for inspiration for the Craft Company as some are art and history books with old copyrights with spectacular pictures that went out of print almost half a century or more ago. One of these books I recently looked at is titled Early Islamic Civilization and it lead me to the beginnings of Baghdad when the Abbasids founded their capital.

The city was built from a small, obscure fishing village to replace the capital of the Islamic empire which was previosly in Damascus, Syria. This is where it is said Islamic art and architecture took a different turn away from a more Byzantine influence. The mosque in the center was also the Caliphs residence and is said to house some of the most spectacular mosaics.

Here is a mosaic from Jordan which is also dated from around this time from a city Umm el-Jimal which was considered an out post of the Abbasid empire.

Infinite pattern and geometric pattern was a huge part of Islamic art. The infinite design is embedded in the idea of eternity. Islam also forbids the depiction of figures hence Islamic artisans and and designers moved away from Byzantine style to construction of more geometric patterns for the purpose of decoration.

A year back we made used this infinite arabesque design to create a stone border for a wooden floor on mesh which was 18 inches wide and almost a 100 ft long. Each panel was 4 ft long!

The Abbasids made Baghdad a trading post that eventually attracted people from as far as China and Norsemen or the Vikings.

Infinite pattern and colors and designs of Asia can be incorporated simultaneously as well. Here is a set of nest tables with mosaic nestled in a lotus pattern (indian) and infinite (islamic) mosaic and the nest tables are based on a victorian design (the carving will be added)

People around the world are very familiar with Greek and Roman mosaics which are probably more accessible and moreover in regions that encourage tourism. Of course Turkey is an excellent tourist destination for mosaic lovers who want to see an Islamic twist to the ancient art. Here is a mosaic at The Craft Company inspired my a mosaic from Topkapi.

Roses, Arabesque Mosaics and my Paintings

My first love has always been my painting and regretfully I find less and less time to work on my paintings. Strangely, over the years I seem to want to spend more time working on each painting so that I have to force myself to stop. There has to be some end point where the painting pleases me enough for me to move on! Here is a watercolor I am currently working on.

I am particularly fond of roses and try to put them in many things I create. These handmade marble dust wall hangers are inspired from golden Indian jewellery. I love the Tutti Frutti Cartier necklaces with the large inlaid jewels and since I love roses I inlaid these hangers with roses.

When I started watercoloring I found all this pattern and texture in the natural movement of flowers and leaves. There is always a pattern in the way vegetation finds light and so I am always finding patterns that are based on floral design for my mosaics. This box has a top which is a floral arabesque I designed using just a few tile colors and some silver. Again I love the idea of jewelled pendants and I always center designs around them.

Embroidery that has Islamic or even arabesque undertones will always stand out from Indian designs that tend to use the curve of the mango or other more subcontinental icons. I love the influences the subcontinental embroiderer adds to the hand embroidery he fashions. I will create a design or a flat sketch, throw in the colored thread and an assortment of beads I have chosen and watch them weave their magic. My embroiderers have such well trained eyes that if something doesn't seem right they will stop and confer with me. The floral design here is being worked on for an evening bag I will sell in the Craft Company but again I love the jewelled effect and insist on adding pearls and crystal to the embroideries to give them their Eastern yet subdued elegance.

Pakistan is rooted in the subcontinent and is influenced by Indian culture, art and of course Bollywood. At the same time it is deeply mindful of its Islamic heritage. The artisans of this land seem to mix these influences so that there is an identity in its craft that is truly original.

I love mosaics and a large part of The Craft Company is devoted to making mosaics. I am working hard this year to come up with mosaics that have brighter colors and are applied to functional items.

Walking around my factory this morning I took some pictures of the new frames that are going to go in the stores soon. They are waiting to be grouted all piled up and unpolished yet. I find it a real challenge to design items that can support mosaics and look good for people to buy and display in their homes.

I also make mosaic lamps and these are from the
carpentry department all lined up ready for the mosaic to be applied on. I have chosen a colorful design like the one in my new hot plates above.

Bridge Morning

Every Thursday morning I play bridge and today was my turn to host. I love baking and I was just gifted a huge slab of Pecorino Romano cheese So I decided to make a zucchini, porcini mushroom, pecorino cheese and onion tart. I also made my own invented recipe of a black currant and toffee cake and a pear tart since pears are in season. The pears are supposedly from Afghanistan but I suspect the fruit walla just says that to make them sound delicious and dangerous.

As far as the bridge went today was my lucky day and I won four hundred rupees at bridge or the princely sum of about five dollars!

I live in Karachi, known to be one of the most dangerous cities in the world. I own a design house with retail outlets in Karachi and Lahore and export my creations all over the world. But my inspiration starts here and I want to write about it.

Amidst the chaos that comes with a city of the sub continent I find inspiration for my work. I want to write about what captures my attention in Karachi or wherever I travel to in person or virtually and show you glimpses of how my world translates into the products I design and the paintings I make. I also love food, cooking, gardening, collecting antiques and of course travelling. I will start by introducing The Craft Company.

This is a mobile pouch we embroidered and beaded showing a girl on a scooter.
