Typography is the art and technique of arranging type in order to make language visible. The arrangement of type involves the selection of typefaces, point size, line length, leading (line spacing), adjusting the spaces between groups of letters (tracking) and adjusting the space between pairs of letters (kerning). Type design is a closely related craft, which some consider distinct and others a part of typography; most typographers do not design typefaces, and some type designers do not consider themselves typographers. In modern times, typography has been put into motion—in film, television and online broadcasts—to add emotion to mass communication.

Typography is performed by typesetters, compositors, typographers, graphic designers, art directors, comic book artists, graffiti artists, clerical workers, and anyone else who arranges type for a product. Until the Digital Age, typography was a specialized occupation. Digitization opened up typography to new generations of visual designers and lay users, and it has been said that "typography is now something everybody does."

Google Panda is a change to the Google's search results ranking algorithm that was first released in February 2011 . The change aimed to lower the rank of "low-quality sites", and return higher-quality sites near the top of the search results. CNET reported a surge in the rankings of news websites and social Networking sites, and a drop in rankings for sites containing large amounts of advertising. This change reportedly affected the rankings of almost 12 percent of all search results.

Soon after the Panda roll-out, many websites, including Google's webmaster forum, became filled with complaints of scrapers/copyright inf-ringers getting better rankings than sites with original content. At one point, Google publicly asked for data points to help detect scrapers better. Google's Panda has received several updates since the original roll-out in February 2011, and the effect went global in April 2011. To help affected publishers, Google published an advisory on its blog, thus giving some direction for self-evaluation of a website's quality.

Real Time Information and Payroll Software

Real Time Information (RTI) is being introduced by HM Revenue & Customs and will radically change the way in which all employers make their Pay As You Earn (PAYE) and National Insurance Contributions (NIC) returns. RTI will have significant implications for payroll software. Although not yet in place, HMRC expects all employers to be providing RTI by October 2013.

Under the current system, employers send information about tax and NIC deductions for each employee to HMRC at the end of each tax year. Under the new RTI system, employers will tell HMRC about these deductions either before, or when they actually occur.

The fundamentals of PAYE will remain unchanged. Employers will still deduct tax and National insurance but it is the frequency of reporting these deductions which will change.

The reasons for these changes are listed as; the need to improve the way the PAYE system operates, making the process simpler and less of a burden for employers (although HMRC accept there will be transitional costs), making PAYE more accurate, allowing HMRC to ensure the correct deductions are made, and making the calculation of Universal Credits more straightforward, where applicable.

RTI reporting must become integral to normal payroll operations. Software systems will be required to gather the information and send it to HMRC via the internet, through the Government Gateway, or by using Electronic Data Interchange (EDI), which is expected to be available at least until 2014. RTI is likely to require payroll software systems to provide HMRC with a significant amount of information about each employee and successful submissions will be dependent upon the collection and accuracy of this data as compliance checks will be carried out after the data has been sent.

For the longer term, HMRC expect systems to become available that would allow employers who pay their employees electronically by BACS to automatically send their RTI at the same time.

HMRC are to pilot the system with a number of software developers, commencing in April 2012. The pilot will last for 12 months with all employers being expected to have joined the RTI system by October 2013, although most are expected to join in April 2013 so that their systems are properly embedded by the October deadline.

It doesn't seem to matter how flat screen they get, whether they're HD and internet ready there is something about 'the box'; and it's not good. Unless you're life revolves around the TV the simple fact is that these great big screens can dominate a room like nothing else. You can spend thousands designing your perfect living space, that stylish reflection of your personal, unique taste. Then there it is, looming large over everything else, overshadowing the tasteful antique Ming, the Van Gogh doesn't get a look in and as for the Kandinsky in the corner, well, that may as well go straight out of those picture windows. OK, so we may not all have an art collection that's the envy of the National Gallery but however modest or cosy your living room is there's no escaping the big black hole that the TV carves in a room. And that's the main reason they can be a design black hole; when they're off they're just a big blank screen punching a very noticeable hole at the center of the room. So how do you 'design out' these technical details?

Old tricks

The none-too-dark-art of television design has been with us since they first found their way into our homes. In fact early designers realized they were so out of place in homes of the 1930s and 40s that they came in big cabinets, usually wooden and with nice folding doors that could hide them away. TVs blended in, sort of. By the 1950s, TVs became common and they were something of a status symbol. These days they are less prestigious as everyone has one, in most rooms and your laptop can perform pretty much the same function. The interior design tricks to blend TVs have changed less than the TVs themselves. The idea of containing them in a unit is still with us however, there are some new ideas that have developed alongside technological advances.

Cheap and cheerful

The simplest way to hide your TV is in a fairly standard TV unit. These can be purchased from all the usual suspects and help to frame the TV alongside other audio visual 'stuff'. They work by splitting the focus in the room, creating an overall feature where no one appliance takes precedence. You can incorporate the Ming vase or books and ornaments into the shelves of the units and minimize the effect of the TV. As a cheap and cheerful budget solution they work well, although they don't make much of a statement about the individuality of your style and taste. No Swedish names mentioned, but let’s face it, they get everywhere.

Technical tricks

These days there are range of other options and they don't all cost the earth. Cabinets that contain a mechanical 'lift' device are available that hide the TV away when not in use. These cabinets come in a range of styles and designs which can fit various rooms. Some take the form of a desk, which the TV magically appears from when needed. Others are designed for bedrooms or living rooms. There is a price attached, as with all things, and depending on the design and the mechanics involved the prices tend to be at the higher end of the market. As a stylish solution to making a home out of a house, they work well.

Hidden depths

Television frames are an old technique with some pleasant modern twists. Framing your TV may seem like an odd way to make it less of a focal point; but that depends on the type of frame you use. Manufacturers who make bespoke frames will offer a range of options, from luxury gold, museum quality frames to simple, modern stylish frames. The clever bit comes with the addition of that Kandinsky when needed or the clever use of mirror glass to turn the TV into a useful, attractive and functional item when it's not in use. Mirrored television frames are certainly one of the best, simplest and rather unique solutions. They work well in any room and equally well in domestic properties, offices, showrooms and hotels. Prices on this one vary, but for individual craftsman created pieces you may be surprised, pleasantly, at the competitive options available on the market. As TVs get flatter by the week, the chances are that with the addition of television frames, they may finally blend into the background where they belong.

HTML5 is a language for structuring and presenting content for the World Wide Web, and is a core technology of the Internet originally proposed by Opera Software. It is the fifth revision of the HTML standard and as of February 2012 is still under development. Its core aims have been to improve the language with support for the latest multimedia while keeping it easily readable by humans and consistently understood by computers and devices (web browsers, parsers, etc.). Adobe Flash (formerly Macromedia Flash) is a multimedia platform used to add animation, video, and interactivity to web pages. Flash is frequently used for advertisements, games and flash animations for broadcast. More recently, it has been positioned as a tool for "Rich Internet Applications" ("RIAs").

Flash manipulates vector and raster graphics to provide animation of text, drawings, and still images. It supports bidirectional streaming of audio and video, and it can capture user input via mouse, keyboard, microphone, and camera. Flash contains an object-oriented language called ActionScript and supports automation via the JavaScript Flash language (JSFL).

Flash content may be displayed on various computer systems and devices, using Adobe Flash Player, which is available free of charge for common web browsers, some mobile phones, and a few other electronic devices (using Flash Lite).

It is an example of sequential digital logic, as it has internal memory. Microprocessors operate on numbers and symbols represented in the binary numeral system.

The advent of low-cost computers on integrated circuits has transformed modern society. General-purpose microprocessors in personal computers are used for computation, text editing, multimedia display, and communication over the Internet. Many more microprocessors are part of embedded systems, providing digital control of a myriad of objects from appliances to automobiles to cellular phones and industrial process control.

Android is a Linux-based operating system for mobile devices such as smartphones and tablet computers. It is developed by the Open Handset Alliance led by Google. Google purchased the initial developer of the software, Android Inc., in 2005.The unveiling of the Android distribution in 2007 was announced with the founding of the Open Handset Alliance, a consortium of 86 hardware, software, and telecommunication companies devoted to advancing open standards for mobile devices. Google releases the Android code as open-source, under the Apache License. The Android Open Source Project (AOSP) is tasked with the maintenance and further development of Android.

Android has a large community of developers writing applications ("apps") that extend the functionality of the devices. Developers write primarily in a customized version of Java. Apps can be downloaded from third-party sites or through online stores such as Android Market, the app store run by Google. As of October 2011 there were more than 400,000 apps available for Android, and the estimated number of applications downloaded from the Android Market as of December 2011 exceeded 10 billion.

Four Ways to Protect Your Home Computer Network

A home network is no longer the high tech curiosity that it was when wireless routers first appeared. Today, the average American family has its own wireless network. These networks make our life extremely convenient, but that convenience comes at a cost. Remember when you were a kid, sleeping over at your friends, and you’d get scolded for sneaking snacks out of the pantry? These days it’s the neighbor boy sucking up your bandwidth (or worse) that you have to watch out for.

Here are the top four ways to protect your home network from an outside invasion, whether they’re after your bandwidth or your checking account number.

1. Change the default name and passwords on your router’s administrator settings.

This is different than the password for encryption (see below). This is a step many people forget, and not doing so could allow a hacker to gain unrestricted access to your router and essentially all computers on your network.

2. Always enable network encryption on your wireless security settings.

It seems silly to even mention this, but there are still people who don’t understand that leaving their networks open is just asking for trouble. Security settings encrypt your data and block bandwidth thieves from taking a free ride on your network. In the olden days, WEP encryption was the industry standard. These days, WEP is easier to crack than a Reidel wine glass. Always set your network to WPA encryption or higher.

3. Disable the SSID broadcast on your router.

By doing this, you are essentially making your broadcast signal disappear. A passerby or neighbor scanning for available wireless networks on their cell phone or laptop will not see your router on the list of available networks. You can configure your own computers and devices to automatically connect to your router even if it doesn’t show up on a SSID scan.

4. Regularly monitor on your network to check that there are no unwanted guests.

Most routers come with software that provides these monitoring tools. Be sure to install and use them.

As the speed and sheer amount of digital information on the Internet increases at an exponential rate, more and more activities that were once traditionally performed in the real world are now taking place in virtual space. It’s can be hard to remember general safety rules, but if you follow these steps and stay vigilant, you’ll have done much to protect your home computer network.
