If your teenager has been nagging you to purchase a cell phone for them, then I would advise that you inform them before hand of the implications of overspending. They came to you for the phone, so it would only be prudent that they pay for a portion of the bill from their monthly/weekly allowance. This will not only discourage them from racking up enormous bills, but will also help them to learn some financial management skills. Another good option would be to offer them a prepaid telephone. The call rates on this option are a bit higher, but they will think twice before making a call.

Driving

For many parents, having their child give them a call once they have arrived safely at a particular destination - or if they are in trouble - would be reason enough to buy them a cell phone. The prudent thing to do, however, is to ensure that if they will be driving, that they make use of either a hands free kit or an ear piece. There is a huge drive the world over to impose heavy fines for anyone caught either talking or SMS’ing while driving. Many accidents have been caused by teenagers who have either been talking or SMS’ing while behind the wheel of their cars. They get wrapped up in their conversations and lose focus on the road ahead.

It doesn't seem to matter how flat screen they get, whether they're HD and internet ready there is something about 'the box'; and it's not good. Unless you're life revolves around the TV the simple fact is that these great big screens can dominate a room like nothing else. You can spend thousands designing your perfect living space, that stylish reflection of your personal, unique taste. Then there it is, looming large over everything else, overshadowing the tasteful antique Ming, the Van Gogh doesn't get a look in and as for the Kandinsky in the corner, well, that may as well go straight out of those picture windows. OK, so we may not all have an art collection that's the envy of the National Gallery but however modest or cosy your living room is there's no escaping the big black hole that the TV carves in a room. And that's the main reason they can be a design black hole; when they're off they're just a big blank screen punching a very noticeable hole at the center of the room. So how do you 'design out' these technical details?

Old tricks

The none-too-dark-art of television design has been with us since they first found their way into our homes. In fact early designers realized they were so out of place in homes of the 1930s and 40s that they came in big cabinets, usually wooden and with nice folding doors that could hide them away. TVs blended in, sort of. By the 1950s, TVs became common and they were something of a status symbol. These days they are less prestigious as everyone has one, in most rooms and your laptop can perform pretty much the same function. The interior design tricks to blend TVs have changed less than the TVs themselves. The idea of containing them in a unit is still with us however, there are some new ideas that have developed alongside technological advances.

Cheap and cheerful

The simplest way to hide your TV is in a fairly standard TV unit. These can be purchased from all the usual suspects and help to frame the TV alongside other audio visual 'stuff'. They work by splitting the focus in the room, creating an overall feature where no one appliance takes precedence. You can incorporate the Ming vase or books and ornaments into the shelves of the units and minimize the effect of the TV. As a cheap and cheerful budget solution they work well, although they don't make much of a statement about the individuality of your style and taste. No Swedish names mentioned, but let’s face it, they get everywhere.

Technical tricks

These days there are range of other options and they don't all cost the earth. Cabinets that contain a mechanical 'lift' device are available that hide the TV away when not in use. These cabinets come in a range of styles and designs which can fit various rooms. Some take the form of a desk, which the TV magically appears from when needed. Others are designed for bedrooms or living rooms. There is a price attached, as with all things, and depending on the design and the mechanics involved the prices tend to be at the higher end of the market. As a stylish solution to making a home out of a house, they work well.

Hidden depths

Television frames are an old technique with some pleasant modern twists. Framing your TV may seem like an odd way to make it less of a focal point; but that depends on the type of frame you use. Manufacturers who make bespoke frames will offer a range of options, from luxury gold, museum quality frames to simple, modern stylish frames. The clever bit comes with the addition of that Kandinsky when needed or the clever use of mirror glass to turn the TV into a useful, attractive and functional item when it's not in use. Mirrored television frames are certainly one of the best, simplest and rather unique solutions. They work well in any room and equally well in domestic properties, offices, showrooms and hotels. Prices on this one vary, but for individual craftsman created pieces you may be surprised, pleasantly, at the competitive options available on the market. As TVs get flatter by the week, the chances are that with the addition of television frames, they may finally blend into the background where they belong.

Four Ways to Protect Your Home Computer Network

A home network is no longer the high tech curiosity that it was when wireless routers first appeared. Today, the average American family has its own wireless network. These networks make our life extremely convenient, but that convenience comes at a cost. Remember when you were a kid, sleeping over at your friends, and you’d get scolded for sneaking snacks out of the pantry? These days it’s the neighbor boy sucking up your bandwidth (or worse) that you have to watch out for.

Here are the top four ways to protect your home network from an outside invasion, whether they’re after your bandwidth or your checking account number.

1. Change the default name and passwords on your router’s administrator settings.

This is different than the password for encryption (see below). This is a step many people forget, and not doing so could allow a hacker to gain unrestricted access to your router and essentially all computers on your network.

2. Always enable network encryption on your wireless security settings.

It seems silly to even mention this, but there are still people who don’t understand that leaving their networks open is just asking for trouble. Security settings encrypt your data and block bandwidth thieves from taking a free ride on your network. In the olden days, WEP encryption was the industry standard. These days, WEP is easier to crack than a Reidel wine glass. Always set your network to WPA encryption or higher.

3. Disable the SSID broadcast on your router.

By doing this, you are essentially making your broadcast signal disappear. A passerby or neighbor scanning for available wireless networks on their cell phone or laptop will not see your router on the list of available networks. You can configure your own computers and devices to automatically connect to your router even if it doesn’t show up on a SSID scan.

4. Regularly monitor on your network to check that there are no unwanted guests.

Most routers come with software that provides these monitoring tools. Be sure to install and use them.

Netbook vs. Laptop: Which is Best For Me?

I’m an on-the-go kind of person. I love jumping on a plane for an adventure with nothing but a small carry-on bag and my purse. I am also embarrassingly dependent on my computer; whether at home or lounging around on vacation, you’ll usually find a laptop across my knees. I was recently in the market for a new computer, but instead of paying full price for a new laptop, I opted instead to spend only $300 on a 10 inch ASUS cobalt-blue netbook. The low price was enticing, but what really sold me was the size. Small enough to be carried from room to room balanced easily on the palm of one hand, the tiny netbook was the perfect companion for my always-moving lifestyle.

A friend cautioned me that I might not be satisfied with my purchase. “They don’t have much computing power,” he warned. “No DVD drive, and not a lot of memory. The small screen can also get annoying.” My response in defense of the netbook: “but it fits in my purse!” "Lives in my purse" may have been a more apt description, as I frequently take it with me to coffee shops, board meetings, or even the other side of the United States. It only weighs a few pounds and the battery lasts for 8 hours. Laptops are convenient, but the portability of the netbook is almost unmatched.

However, my friend’s cautions against the netbook were not unfounded. My relationship with my netbook, though rosy in the beginning, has had its rough patches. The lack of an optical drive means I can’t easily install software, watch DVDs, or play CDs. Netbooks are not as powerful as laptops unless you spend a considerable amount, so I have been frequently frustrated with slowness, and sometimes non-responsiveness, when I have too many programs running at the same time. The small screen also makes watching YouTube videos less visually exciting than on my old laptop.

If you love a large screen, want a fast computing experience, and can’t live without extras like a DVD drive, (and have the $500 to $1500 to spend), you are probably better off sticking with a laptop. If portability is your main goal and you mostly use your computer for basics like word processing and the internet, then you will be perfectly happy with a netbook. I still have my old laptop, which lives at my home while my netbook travels around with me. Since the two serve such different functions, you may even be happiest like I am--with one of each!

This is a tablet with modest, but efficient, hardware specifications. The screen size is rated for seven inches of digital real estate. The clarity of the display is a disappointing 800 by 480 pixels. Remember, this tablet is not designed to be an "iPad killer". The processor is cruising along at a barely respectable one gigahertz. It is an AMLogic ARM processor. This is accompanied by an anorexic 512 megabytes of RAM. The internal memory space is a tight four gigabytes but thankfully the tablet also has an external flash memory card slot.

A developer by the name of Aaron Seigo is the impetus behind the Spark tablet. He is a KDE developer and wants this to be a special kind of tablet. There will be a Meego-based mobile operating system running the menus and programs. If you do not remember Meego, it is an open source platform based on Linux and started by phone maker Nokia. The Spark tablet runs "Mer", a fork of Meego. Those who want to develop touch screen friendly apps with QT and QML will now be able to. This tablet will be the perfect beta testing tablet.

A Great Looking User Interface

The KDE ( K Desktop Environment ) that this tablet is running under is sporting a "Plasma Active" user interface. This is a flexible cover for the Linux mobile operating system, similar to the "Sense" user interface on HTC smartphones. But the "Plasma Active" UI is designed not to use much processor memory. It can be used on smartphones, smart televisions, in-car infotainment systems, set-top boxes and home automation. It is very customizable and "learns" what the user wants over time.

Business owners wouldn’t think about leaving all of their files on a single computer, knowing that if something goes wrong with that system they lose everything. They should think the same way about the data they store on a cloud.

When considering a back-up solution to cloud storage, it’s important to choose the right system to meet your business needs. While protecting you information is the main point of having a cloud back-up, one of the first considerations should be cost. There should be no surprises that show up in a monthly or annual bill. The cost should be straight forward, preferably in one flat rate and void of any hidden charges.

There are a few factors to consider when looking into a cloud back-up, among them:

Use of top notch storage facilities
Delta Backup
Speed of access and recovery
Management control
Security

You store all of your files and data on a cloud so it should make sense that restoration of any corrupt or lost files should also be available on the cloud. It can be a waste of precious time if you have to configure a back-up system on every computer connected to the cloud and even more time is lost if you have to go to each machine and input the settings about what data will be backed up or how. Say you’re on vacation and your version of Windows is corrupted you need to be able to restore the program through the cloud. If you have to wait until you return to make repairs to individual files, it seems to defeat the purpose of your cloud back-up. Time can be saved with some back-up solutions that use what is termed delta back-up. What this means is that you may have a program in which information is changed frequently. Instead of backing up the entire program, the delta back-up only updates the information that has changed. Instead of tying up your resources by updating a large file every time something changes, this type of service saves a lot of time and will not slow down your system while it needlessly backs up a large file.

Your cloud back-up system should allow you complete control through a single console. The ability to add, delete or adjust users’ access should be able to be performed from a single location. Every aspect of your business should be able to be handled from one single console in order to save you the time and effort you need to run your business.

Encryption of your information should be handles at the source and when considering a beck-up source security should be another key factor. The use of AES-256 is the minimum you should accept, but ensure you have the option to provide the key to the system to those with need.
