Pengangkatan isi muatan kapal karam marak terjadi sejak awal tahun 1960-an. Pengangkatan illegal awalnya dilakukan oleh pelat-pelaut tradisional. Mereka menyelam dengan selang oksigen di beberapa tempat yang diketahui terdapat kapal karam seperti di Teluk Tuban di perairan Rembang, Jepara, Cilacap, Kepulauan Seribu, Subang, Indramayu, Cirebon, Bangka Belitung, Natuna, Ambon, Ternate, dan Tidore.

Di tahun 1985-1986, Lembaga Ekspdisi Pemanfaatan Umum Harta Pusaka Rakyat Indonesia bekerjasama dengan Swartberg Limited, perusahaan asal Hongkong melakukan pengangkatan muatan kapal Geldermalsen milik VOC Belanda di Karang Heliputan, Tanjungpinang. Namun entah bagaimana, perusahaan yang dipimpin Michael Hatcher itu bisa meloloskan 126 emas lantakan bersama 160.000 keramik Dinasti Ming dan Qing ke Belanda. Di sana, benda itu dilelang dengan harga fantastis, US$ 17 juta. Harga itu membuat mata pemburu harta karun terbelalak, dan setelahnya perburuan di perairan Indonesia kian marak.

Tahun 1997 kasus serupa kembali terjadi. Kali ini, perusahaan miliknya Heatcher , United Sub Sea Services United, bekerjasama dengan PT Prasarana Cakrawala Persada mengangkat isi kapal Tek Sing Cargo, di Selat Gelasa, Pulau Bangka. Pengangkatan ini berdasarkan surat izin kerjasama yang dikeluarkan oleh Panitia Nasional. Duta Besar Indonesia di Australia menerima surat dari Australian Fedral Police, bahwa pada 17 Februari 2000, ada 43 kontainer berisi keramik yang datang dari Indonesia. Benda yang berjumlah 450.000 keping itu datang tanpa diketahui oleh instansi Indonesia. dari 43 kontainer, 36 kontainer telah dikirim ke Stuggart Jerman untuk dilelang, tanpa bisa dicegah.

Hingga hari ini, dari catatan Panitia Nasional Benda Berharga Asal Muatan Kapal yang Tenggelam (BMKT) Ditjen Kelautan dan Perikanan, ada 10 titik lokasi pengangkatan benda muatan kapal tenggelam yang telah dilakukan secara berizin. Ke 10 tempat itu adalah di laut Cirebon, Kerawang, Bintan, Bangka Belitung Timur, Natuna, Teluk Buaya, Jepara, Karang Cina dan Pelanakan. Barang-barang itu disimpan di beberapa lokasi, hingga saat ini belum lagi dilelang.

Pada 5 Mei 2009, pemerintah pernah melelang harta karun yang diangkat dari perairan Cirebon di ballroom kantor Kementerian Kelautan dan Perikanan. Lelang harta yang diangkat oleh PT Cosmix Underwater Research Ltd., perusahaan yang ditunjuk pemerintah tersebut hanya berlangsung 5 menit. Pasalnya lelang itu tak dihadiri oleh calon pembeli. Padahal, itu adalah lelang legal pertama atas arkeologi bawah laut di Indonesia.

Ketidakhadiran calon pembeli diyakini karena beratnya prasyarat untuk mengikuti lelang. Menteri Keuangan mengharuskan peserta lelang untukmenyetorkan deposit awal Rp 154 miliar. Harga itu adalah 20 persen dari harga yang ditawarkan atas seluruh harta laut Cirebon tersebut. Jumlahnya, saat itu adalah Rp 720 miliar, atau setara dengan US$ 80 juta.

Promosi atas pelelangan itu juga sangat kurang. Gudang Pamulang, tempat penyimpanan harta tersebut juga tertutup untuk calon peserta lelang yang tidak menyetorkan deposit. Harga barang juga dipaketkan secara keseluruhan, meski banyak barang yang sama.

Hingga saat ini, barang tersebut bersama 9 barang yang telah diangkat belum lagi dilelang. Bekas Menteri Kelautan dan Perikanan, Fadel Muhammad telah bertemu pejabat Perserikatan Bangsa-Bangsa urusan kebudayaan, UNESCO, untuk membahas persoalan arkeologi laut tersebut. Pemerintah saat itu menyatakan membatalkan penjualan artefak tersebut. Meski demikian, hingga kini proses untuk pengusahaan pelelangan tetap berlanjut.

Rusman, Panitia Nasional BMKT menyebutkan, belum dilelangnya barang itu karena terbentur dengan Undang-undang No 11 tahun 2010 tentang cagar budaya. Arkeologi bawah laut tercatat sebagai benda cagar budaya yang tidak dapat dibawa ke luar dari Indonesia. “Sudah ada beberapa yang tertarik untuk proses pelelangan. Tapi kita tunggu keputusan diknas untuk dijual. Di Indonesia susah lakunya,” kata Rusman.

Semua barang yang akan dilelang, kata Rusman harus terlebih dahulu dinilai oleh tenaga ahli. Hasil penilaian benda arkeologi tersebut hanya berlaku 6 bulan. “Harus ada kepastian sebelum dinilai. Masa berlakunya singkat dan membutuhkan biaya yang besar,” kata Rusman.

Ribuan harta tersebut kini bertumpuk di beberapa gudang penyimpanan tanpa bisa dimanfaatkan. Di lautan, penjarah terus merajalela.Terlalu luasnya zona laut dan kontrol yang kurang ketat di lokasi membuat benda-benda arkeologi bawah laut ini rawan pencurian.

Kasus terbaru terjadi ke Perairan Bintan Kepulauan Riau, awal Januari lalu. Kapal Motor Trianis dipergoki oleh kapal perang Angkatan Laut ketika tengah membawa 500 lebih keramik abad ke 13 dari Dinasti Ming. Sampai saat ini, belum jelas di titik koordinat mana barang tersebut diangkat. Beberapa pihak termasuk Pannas BMKT menduga hingga kini di lokasi tersebut para nelayan tetap beroperasi mengangkat harta karun laut tersebut.

Kasus di Kepulauan Riau tersebut pun patut diduga menjadi lahan bermain oknum aparat. Jika awal penangkapan Lamtamal IV Tanjungpinang melaporkan penangkapan 546 unit benda cagar budaya kemudian, jumlah itu dibantah kembali. Kepala Dinas Penerangan Lamtamal IV, Mayor Pontoh mengatakan wartawan keliru menulis. “Yang 500 lebih itu nomor lambung KRI. Semuanya sekitar 400-an,” katanya saat dihubungi dari Jakarta. Total semua yang diserahkan kepada Dinas Kebudayaan Kepulauan Riau adalah 402 keramik.

Salman Lubis, nahkoda Kapal Motor Trianis mengaku jika ia bersama delapan awak kapal hanya mencari ikan. Sedangkan keramik yang sebagian pecah tersebut ditemukan tersangkut di jaring. Iming-iming nilai jual yang tinggi membuat para penjarah terus beraksi.

Riwayat Kapal Karam di Nusantara

Kapal Belanda itu dihempas badai. Tak terlalu jauh dari daratan. Ombak besar menghantam lambung kapal layar, kemudian oleng menabrak karang. Orang-orang berlari menyelamatkan diri. Peristiwa itu terjadi di tahun 1835, jauh sebelum Indonesia ada, dan direkam dalam sebuah lukisan.

Kejadian tersebut terjadi di perairan Lacipara, di mulut Selat Bangka, sebuah gugusan karang dekat dengan daratan Sumatera. Karamnya kapal Belanda tersebut adalah salah satu kejadian dari rentetan kejadian karamnya ribuan kapal di lautan Nusantara, sejak ratusan tahun silam.

Posisi Indonesia yang 70 persennya adalah wilayah perairan menjadi sangat strategis. Letaknya di antara benua Asia dan Australia serta Samudera Hindia dan Pasific. Teritorial itu menghubungkan Indonesia dengan negara-negara di wilayah Eropa, Afrika, Timur tengah, Asia Selatan dan Asia Timur. Indonesia juga dikenal sebagai salah satu daerah yang kaya bahan rempah-rempah. Karenanya, sejak zaman dulu, perairan Indonesia, sebagai persimpangan lalulintas internasional menjadi salah satu perairan yang padat dan selalu dilayari kapal-kapal dagang.

Diperkirakan, sejak abad ke 10, ada ribuan kapal Cina, Belanda (VOC), Inggris, Portugis, Spanyol, dan kapal dagang dalam negeri yang karam. Kapal-kapal itu mengangkut banyak rempah dan beragam barang dagangan hingga emas ke Indonesia.

UNESCO mencatat, ada 5 juta kapal karam di seluruh dunia. Sekitar 500.000, atau 10 persen berada di lautan Indonesia. Sedangkan 50.000 di antaranya mengandung harta bernilai yang berusia ribuan tahun, tidak sedikit yang memuat harta berharga bernilai tinggi. Apabila terdapat kapal tenggelam di suatu wilayah dalam tempo lama dan tidak ada pemiliknya maka kapal beserta muatannya menjadi milik pemerintahan di wilayah karamnya kapal.

Sementara data Penelitian dan Pengembangan Kementerian Kelautan dan Perikanan, di perairan Indonesia terdeteksi 463 titik kapal tenggelam yang bermuatan harta karun. Sejarawan Cina menyatakan, sekitar 30.000 kapal Cina yang melakukan perlayaran tidak pernah kembali ke pelabuhan asalnya. Sebagian kapal itu berlayar ke Indonesia. kapal-kapal itu banyak berlayar ke Timur dan Barat Sumatera, Selat Sunda, Pantai Utara Jawa, Selat Karimata, dan Selat Makassar.

Ada beberapa faktor kapal karam di perairan Nusantara. Bahaya yang ditimbulkan alam, di mana, banyak pelaut tidak bisa membaca keadaan geografis lautan Nusantara. Faktor perang memperebutkan wilayah perdagangan dan hasrat menguasai perairan juga membuat banyak kapal yang kandas ke dasar lautan. Di samping juga kelalaian dan kesengajaan seperti membakar kapal.

Sekitar abad 15, pertempuran laut dan sungai kerap terjadi di perairan Nusantara. Kerajaan lokal dan pelaut Eropa seperti Portugis, Inggris dan VOC Belanda yang kerap bentrok dengan kerajaan lokal. Persaingan dagang sebagai komoditi pasar menjadi pokok utama persengketaan. Karena itu, kapal dagang pada masa itu selalu dikawal kapal yang dilengkapi persenjataan lengkap.

Selain pertempuran pendatang dengan pribumi, terjadi juga pertempuran antara sesamapendatang yang memperebutkan wilayah penghasil rempah dan jalur pelayaran laut. Belanda dan Perancis tercatat pernah bertempur di perairan Makassar pada 1660, Banten pada 26 Desember 1601, dan di Selat Malakapada 1636. Kerajaan Palembang juga pernah bertempur di sungai dengan VOC Belanda pada November 1659. Tahun 1891 dan 1821 Kerajaan Palembang-Darussalam juga bertempur dengan Kerajaan Belanda di sungai Palembang.

Dalam buku Kapal Karam abad ke-10 di Laut Jawa Cirebon terbitan Badan Nasional Benda Berharga Asal Kapal yang Tenggelam (BMKT) dicatat, kapal-kapal yang melintasi perairan Nusantara sejak abad 10 adalah kapal-kapal dari Eropa dan Asia. Mereka yang dari Asia seperti Cina adalah adalah pedagang. Sementara yang dari Eropa seperti Belanda dan Portugis adalah pelaut-pelaut yang dicap penjajah yang berperang memperebutkan wilayah pelayaran dan jalur ekspor-impor hasil bumi.

Nusantara yang dulunya berbentuk kerajaan-kerajaan juga menguasai ilmu pengetahuan laut. Karena itu, biasanya, kapal-kapal asing tersebut memperkerjakan pelaut lokal (mualim) sebagai pemandu. Sebagian yang tidak memakai jasa mualim lokallah yangkemudian diperkirakan karam di perairan Nusantara.

Diperkirakan, para pelaut Nusantara telah menguasi ilmu navigasi sejak lama. Mereka disebutkan telah mengenal peta. Sebuah catatan Portugis abad 16 mencatatkan hal itu. Peta tentang Nusantara pertama dibuat oleh Fransisco Rodriguez (1512). Peta bertuliskan aksara Jawa itu karam di Selat Malaka, dikapal Albuquerque saat hendak dikirimkan kepada Raja Portugal. Bisa jadi, pengetahuan ilmu peta Portugis di wilayah Nusantara didasarkan pada peta-peta yang dibuat pelaut lokal.

Bambang Budi Utomo, dari Pusat Penelitian dan Pengembangan Arkeologi Nasional menuliskan, sejarah bahari Nusantara dimulai jauh sebelum bangsa Eropa menemukan daratan Asia. Sejak abad ke-4, hubungan luar negeri pertama terjalin antara pelaut Nusantara dengan saudagar Arab dan India. Jalur yang dibuat ekspor komuditi sudah digarap sejak saat itu. Dari India, rempah Nusantara kemudian dibawa melalui jalan darat ke Timur Tengah hingga ke Eropa.

I-Tsing, seorang biksu pengembara dari Tiongkok yang singgah ke Sriwijaya (Palembang) pada abad ke-7 menyebutkan, pelayaran ke Tiongkok dilakukan oleh kapal-kapal Sriwijaya. Mereka adalah pelaut ulung yang berperan membuka jalur pelayaran timur ke Tiongkok dan jalur barat ke India, Timur Dekat dan Afrika. Sejak saat itu, perdagangan antar kerajaan terjadi. Dari Nusantara dikirim komuditi rempah, dan Tiongkok kemudian membawa keramik-keramik ke Nusantara yang meliputi Jawa, Sumatera dan sebagian Kalimantan.

Perdagangan antar wilayah tersebut terbangun hingga akhir abad ke-10. Kolonialisme Eropa yang kemudian masuk mulai menguasai wilayah perairan, perang memperebutkan jalur perdagangan. Tercatat bangsa Portugis yang pertama masuk ke Malaka, yaitu sekitarabad ke 15. Sejak saat itu, perang membuat banyak kapal karam di perairan Nusantara.

Roro Jonggrang was a very beautiful princess from a Javanese kingdom, Prambanan Kingdom hundred years ago. Her famous beauty was known throughout the country, and princes from far and different land and kingdoms came to propose her. However, her beauty did not make her humble, instead she grew her arrogance even more. She refused all their proposal, and sometime in harsh as well. Many returned brokenhearted.

There was a famous prince by that era, Prince Bandung Bondowoso. He was famous by his strength, power, and good looking. He owned a big kingdom with thousand of soldiers. He too heard of Roro Jonggrang's amazing beauty that he set up to the kingdom to propose her.

Having heard that Prince Bondowoso was coming to marry her, Roro Jonggang grew worried. She disliked the idea of getting married, however, she too understood the consequence if she refused the proposal. She knew that Bondowoso had thousands of soldiers that could attack her kingdom if she disappointed him. So when Bondowoso arrived and proposed her, she was willing to accept it with one condition.

Bondowoso had to make her 1000 temples in one night time. If he failed, then Roro Jonggrang would not marry him. Now, Bondowoso was not only strong, he had thousands of men working for him, and not only men, he owned the power to control the genies as well. He agreed to fulfill Jonggrang's wish and started to work it immediately. He used his power to call all the genies and asked them to keep on working until they completed 1000 temples by the time the rooster crowed the next morning.

The genies worked without stop any second. They would only stop by the time the rooster crowed. Soon hundreds of temples were completed. This made Roro Jonggrang restless. She could not sleep or even closed her eyes. She tried to think any way to fail Bondowoso. Finally, she got an idea. She cut paper in the shape of a circle and glued it in front of a candle holder. She lit the candle and carried it to the chicken coop where the rooster slept. When the rooster saw the candle, it thought that it was almost dawn and the sun was going to rise soon. The rooster quickly got up and in a second, it crowed.

The working genies heard the rooster and thought that the morning had come. Instantly, they stopped working and disappeared leaving the undone temples. There were 999 temples that completed. One more to be built. Bondowoso was disappointed to see this. He was very mad. When he found out that it was the work of Roro Jonggrang, he came to her and cursed her into a stone.

Until now, we can still see the statue of Princess Roro Jonggrang in one of those temples that Bondowoso built for her. The temples are now named Prambanan.

History

Rulers of the Sailendra dynasty built Borobudur some time between AD 750 and AD 850. Little else is known about Borobudur’s early history, but the Sailendras must have recruited a huge workforce, as some 60, 000 cubic metres of stone had to be hewn, transported and carved during its construction. The name Borobudur is possibly derived from the Sanskrit words ‘Vihara Buddha Uhr’, which mean ‘Buddhist Monastery on the Hill’.
With the decline of Buddhism and the shift of power to East Java, Borobudur was abandoned soon after completion and for centuries lay forgotten, buried under layers of volcanic ash. It was only in 1815, when Sir Thomas Stamford Raffles governed Java, that the site was cleared and the sheer magnitude of the builders’ imagination and technical skill was revealed. Early in the 20th century the Dutch began to tackle the restoration of Borobudur, but over the years the supporting hill had become waterlogged and the whole immense stone mass started to subside. A mammoth US$25 million restoration project was undertaken between 1973 and 1983 to finally finish the job.
On 21 January 1985, bombs planted by opponents of Soeharto exploded on the upper layers of Borobudur. Many of the smaller stupas were damaged, but it has once again been fully restored, demonstrating the structure’s timeless resilience. In 1991 Borobudur gained the status of a World Heritage site.

On a vacation trip, it's a must to try local food, don't you agree? Suggested by the driver I hired for few days in Bali, after having fun at Tanjung Benoa, he took me to Nasi Ayam Bu Oki. I heard the name for quiet some times before. Ah, it's a famous thing.

Located near Santika Hotel Nusa Dua, the place looked so simple but never empty. People just kept coming even it already 2 hours passed from lunch time. The first thing the waiter asked was the level of spiciness. I ordered medium. Apparently they already had one set of dishes so you don't need to choose, but it also open for your preference.

Nasi Ayam Bu Oki

One set of dish consisted of rice, fried chicken, ayam suwir (pulled out chicken), lawar ( in Indonesian we called it as urap khas Bali. Basically, vegetables - usually bean sprout and long beans - mixed with shredded coconut), telur pindang (egg boiled with soy sauce stock), sate lilit (fish satay). I love the sate lilit that I ordered more. It costed me IDR 2K for 1 sate lilit. All the side dishes were so good, I finished them all in less than 10 minutes!

Cooked by native Bali, the dishes was rich of spice. Worth a try!

President François Hollande has visited France’s first lady for the first time since she was hospitalized late last week after a gossip magazine reported he was having an affair with an actress.
An official at the presidential palace said Friday that Hollande visited Valerie Trierweiler the previous evening.
The 48-year-old journalist was admitted a week ago to Paris’ Pitie-Salpetriere Hospital for rest. His office said she had experienced a “crisis of nerves” upon learning of the report in Closer magazine last week that the 59-year-old president has been having an affair with Julie Gayet, 41.
Patrice Biancone, a spokesman for Trierweiler, told The Associated Press on Thursday that her condition was improving, and that until then only one person from her family – a son – had visited her.

In its initial report on the matter, Closer published photos that it said show Hollande, wearing a motorcycle helmet with darkened visor, was sneaking into an apartment near the presidential palace to meet Gayet. Gayet is suing the magazine, accusing it of invasion of privacy.
The report dented a tradition among French media of ignoring the private lives of public figures.

Located off the northwest tip o Bird’s Head Peninsula on the island of New Guinea, in Indonesia’s West Papua province, Raja Ampat, or the Four Kings, is an archipelago comprising over 1,500 small islands, cays and shoals surrounding the four main islands of Misool, Salawati, Batanta and Waigeo, and the smaller island of Kofiau. Raja Ampat Regency is new regency which separated from Sorong Regency at 2004. It encompasses more than 40,000 km² of land and sea, which also contains Cendrawasih Bay, the largest marine national park in Indonesia. It is a part of the newly named West Papua (province) of Indonesia which was formerly Irian Jaya. The islands are the most northern pieces of land in the Australian continent. The name of Raja Ampat comes from local mythology that tells about a woman who finds seven eggs. Four of the seven eggs hatch and become kings that occupy four of Raja Ampat biggest islands whilst the other three become a ghost, a woman, and a stone.

History shows that Raja Ampat was once a part of Tidore Kingdom, an influential kingdom from Maluku. Yet, after Holland invaded Maluku, it was shortly claimed as a part of the kingdom of Holland. The main occupation for people around this area is fishing since the area is dominated by the sea. They live in a small colony of the tribes that spreads around the area. Although traditional culture still strongly exist, they are very welcoming to visitors. Their religion is dominantly Christian.

The oceanic natural resource around Raja Ampat makes it significantly potential as a touristic area. Many sources place Raja Ampat as one of their top ten popular places for diving whilst it becomes number one in terms of underwater biodiversity.

According to Conservation International, marine surveys suggest that the marine life diversity in the Raja Ampat area is the highest recorded on Earth. Diversity is considerably greater than any other area sampled in the Coral Triangle composed of Indonesia, Philippines and Papua New Guinea. The Coral Triangle is the heart of the world’s coral reef biodiversity, making Raja Ampat quite possibly the richest coral reef ecosystems in the world.

The area’s massive coral colonies along with relatively high sea surface temperatures, also suggest that its reefs may be relatively resistant to threats like coral bleaching and coral disease, which now jeopardize the survival of other coral ecosystems around the world. The Raja Ampat islands are remote and relatively undisturbed by humans.

The high marine diversity in Raja Ampat is strongly influenced by its position between the Indian and Pacific Oceans, as coral and fish larvae are more easily shared between the two oceans. Raja Ampat’s coral diversity, resilience, and role as a source for larval dispersal make it a global priority for marine protection.

1,309 fish species, 537 coral species (a remarkable 96% of all scleractinia recorded from Indonesia are likely to occur in these islands and 75% of all species that exist in the world), and 699 mollusk species, the variety of marine life is staggering. Some areas boast enormous schools of fish and regular sightings of sharks, such as wobbegongs.

Geylang is a neighbourhood in the city-state of Singapore east of the Central Area, Singapore's central business district. The location of Old Airport Road bears witness to the fact that Geylang, under the British administration, was thought to be outside the limits of the city proper and, therefore, suitable for the siting of Singapore's first commercial airport. The hangars for repair for the light aircraft can still be seen today that have been slated by the Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA) for redevelopment into commercial and shopping precincts linked by the nearby Kallang MRT station.

The development of Geylang through the next 50 years through to the contemporary era can best be observed along the main trunk road that leads eastward toward Paya Lebar (military) Airbase, in a straight line that terminates at Changi (International) airport. Micro-businesses founded by Malay, Indian and Chinese entrepreneurs seized start-up opportunities as mechanics in bicycle or motor repair workshops, suppliers of wood for making boats, houses, furniture and as merchants in iron, of floor and roofing tiles, in rubber and later plastics for all kinds of marine, industrial, factory and home use, including the mosaic of temples, mosques and churches in Geylang that have its roots serving local worshippers in search of spirituality and the divine. One of the distinctive hallmarks of Geylang architecture is the preservation of its shophouses used by the clan (kinship) associations, set up as a (first) point of contact for newcomers in the migrant wave between 1840 and 1940 for the purpose of integrating the newcomers into the ways and customs of locals. At present the Geylang neighborhood accurately reflects demographic changes in Singapore (2011) where out of every four Singaporeans, one is a foreigner (Goh, Mar, 2011 paper on PRC Immigrants', Social Work Dept, National University of Singapore). As a strategic and military outpost for the British, the sea lanes off the Straits of Malacca were important to be kept free from pirates and open for shipping. As the British expanded in influence and power, so Singapore stood in the gap between East and West interests as a natural deep-harbour destination that played host to the French, Portuguese, Dutch and other European navies and their men. Other seaports in Asia, from Shanghai to Calcutta, also played a role in the traffic of women and girls for prostitution. James Francis Warren has studied the death (coroner's) reports in that colonial era that attest to the lives of the Hokkien, Teochew and Hakka and other dialect groups cast out of the Chinese mainland due to famine and abject poverty. His research tells the story of illiterate Chinese migrants working as coolies and rickshaw pullers and gives an accurate description of what life might have been for the poorest of the poor living in Singapore under the British and immediately before the Japanese Occupation. In his 2008 edition of Pirates, Prostitutes & Pullers, the author traces the roots of prostitution in Singapore and gives an explanation of the eastward shift of Singapore's red-light district from Chinatown that was east of the Singapore river, toward the Hylam Street– Beach Road locality where many Chinese, Japanese and European girls were pimped, and finally across the Kallang river to its present location. Warren's research gives an accurate[citation needed] ethno-social background to prostitution of the young men and women who came to Singapore a hundred years ago, having little or no education, who could not converse, read or write in English and resorted by any and all means to survive the ravages of war, hunger and privation back in the country of origin. After the war, the heart of the city centre expanded rapidly outward with residential shophouses, hotels and restaurants making their mark on the history of this area including the Gay World amusement park situated just outside the main gate of the old Kallang airport. Remnants of this pre-war history survive to this day that can be seen in the stereotypical Singapore shophouses along and just off the main Geylang thoroughfare. It is in this context of the Asian settlers that stumbled off boats and sampans into mosques, temples and churches to give thanks for journey mercies, that the history of Geylang's red-light district must be[according to whom?] read and understood. Peter Neville, British author of The Rose of Singapore (Monsoon, 2006) writes a novel of Lai Meng, a once famous prostitute in the Geylang area, that falls in love with an R.A.F. serviceman and through marriage crosses over and out of the street communities that were off-limits to the British troops stationed in Singapore during the second world war. The detailed account of life in Geylang during and immediately after the war, the visits to Haw Par Villa, the types of food and services available among the main truck road toward Changi and all of its varied businesses (including the sex trade) stands at back of the reasons why prostitution, while officially illegal and outlawed in the Singapore constitution, is nevertheless seen as an accessible, public expedient and necessarily so in view of the large numbers of single male foreign workers and expatriates on the island.

Apple vs. Samsung has found its way in to so many headlines, and in so many different countries, that it’s bordered on the ridiculous at times. But one case in particular has been the biggest of them all. Last year, a jury in San Jose found Samsung guilty of infringing on a number of Apple patents, and awarded Cupertino over $1 billion in damages. It was a vast figure, one which drew strong opinions from all avenues. That wasn’t the end of it however. Samsung tried to get it thrown out based on one juror’s previous connection with a Samsung-owned company. It failed. But, Koh – in a separate session in court back in March – determined that a portion of the $1 billion damages was calculated incorrectly/unfairly in Apple’s favor. To clear up a little confusion: I’ve seen a lot of different articles on various sites claiming that Apple’s award was dropped to $400 million. It wasn’t. Cupertino was still guaranteed around $600 million, but infringement damages amounting to around $400-$450 million were up for re-trial. That is the trial going on right now. The case has gone on, and – according to FOSS Patents – both companies are showing signs of humility and grace, despite disagreeing on the final award. As we read earlier in the week, Samsung’s legal team openly admitted that the company copied. At this point, denying it would almost certainly turn the jury against them. And the two companies are due for talks over settlement in January next year. Today, it was revealed that the two companies are miles apart on where they believe the final figure should lie. Apple believes its still owed an extra $380 million. Just $30 million short of the $410 million that’s being contested. Samsung? $52 million. A much more conservative figure. And understandable too. It knows it already owes over $600 million. Anything more is a serious dent. Phil Schiller took the stand today, and recalled the great effort it took to create the iPhone. As has already been determined independently, the iPhone was not just the next logical step forward. It was a breakthrough product that changed the face of the smartphone market. According to Schiller’s testimony, it was a “bet the company product.” Money, time, emotions, everything went in to creating the first iPhone. It was a huge gamble. He moved on to say that currently, almost everyone at Apple works on the iPhone in some capacity. The rest of today’s session is being used mostly to get opinion on exactly how much more Samsung owes Apple. As reported by CNET: “The bulk of the session Thursday included questioning of Julie Davis, an expert accountant hired by Apple to determine just how much Samsung owes the company for infringing on its patents. She testified that Apple lost sales due to Samsung’s infringing devices. But even if the jury decides Apple didn’t lose a single sale because of Samsung infringement, damages should be $287 million, Davis said.” This is far from over, and it’ll take a little while longer for Apple to get the damages owed by Samsung for copying its patents. Sprint’s mobile virtual network operator (MVNO) Ting has recently started quietly supporting Apple’s iPhone, a new report has discovered. According to a help document posted on the carrier’s website, Ting customers can now activate the iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S on its network. Previously, the Tucows-owned telco would not allow users to bring their unlocked iPhone and use it with one of its no-contract wireless plans. Ting still isn’t selling the Apple handset directly, despite a bunch of regional U.S. wireless carriers now offering the latest iPhone 5s/5c as well as previous iPhones… According to this help document dug up by Jordan Kahn of 9to5Mac, owners of the iPhone 4 and iPhone 4s can now activate their handset on the Ting network. The company isn’t actively promoting the iPhone support yet and sources told Kahn that’s due to a deal with Sprint and Apple “that puts Ting in iPhone beta mode until it can prove it’s capable of supporting iPhone customers, representing the brand, and properly screening for lost and stolen devices”. They’re expecting to support the iPhone 5 “soon,” meaning when Sprint and Apple allow it. The carrier sells a variety of full-price Android handsets, with month-to-month plans starting as low as $3 and going all the way up to $60. Unlike other telcos, Ting bills customers depending on their actual use of voice minutes, text messages and data so bills get adjusted month-to-month to match actual usage. It’s also one of the rare wireless companies that does not impose regulatory recapture fees. The company launched in February 2012 and offers network services via a deal with Sprint so they’re supporting Sprint’s CDMA, 3G, 4G WiMAX and 4G LTE. He moved there when he was just seven years old and lived there for four years. While in Indonesia, he attended school, made many friends, and enjoyed the local cuisine. President Obama is publicly adored by many there. Sadly, the President had to skip the APEC Summit for a second year in a row. His absence this time was due to the U.S. Government shutdown. Luckily, Secretary of State John Kerry just happened to be in the area already, so he was able to attend instead.
