Qualifications
Qualified for the position are candidates with a University degree of 240 ECTS, from which at least 60 ECTS were awarded for courses at advanced level and have a Master’s degree or the Swedish Magister or Civilingenjör degree in Computer Science or Computer Engineering, or equivalent. Qualified are also those candidates who have achieved corresponding degrees and/or knowledge in Sweden or abroad.

The position is focused on the trade-off between security and performance within a networking context. Knowledge or experience in some of the areas of wireless network security, adaptive security solutions, quality-of-service and/or performance modeling is therefore desirable.

Good programming skills and English language abilities are pre-requisites for the position.

Admission
Admission is on the basis of individual assessment of the candidates’ abilities to successfully pass the research education. The earliest date for filling the position is June 1, 2011. The position is limited to 4 years, but can be prolonged for up to one more year, if the candidate also takes on other research, teaching or administrative tasks besides his/her PhD research. Those tasks should not exceed 20% of the time of a full-time position.

Project description:
Reconfigurable Control Systems: A Semi-Markovian Jump System Approach
Fault Tolerant Control Systems (FTCS) aim at guaranteeing that a process keeps fulfilling its mission even in the presence of failures, although possibly in a degraded mode. For the design problem, two basic approaches have been studied: passive fault tolerance rely on robust control principles where the faults are considered as modeling uncertainties. Active Fault Tolerant Control (AFTC), on the other hand, involves automatically detecting and identifying the failed components using a Fault Detection and Identification (FDI) scheme and then reconfiguring the control law on-line in response to the FDI algorithm decisions. Despite the evident interaction between FDI and reconfiguration algorithms, the research on FDI and reconfiguration methods has often evolved separately. Typically, in the reconfiguration literature, it is usually assumed that a perfect FDI device is available (i.e. no detection delays, no false alarms, no missed detection, etc.). On the other hand, an FDI algorithm is judged satisfactory if it detects failures quickly and generates few false alarms, regardless of the performance of the closed-loop reconfigured system. However, when the FDI output is feedback into a reconfiguration closed-loop control, a short detection delay and a low false alarm rate do not guarantee stable operation of the reconfigurable system. This makes the synthesis of reconfigurable controllers that take explicitly into account the inherent imperfections of the FDI process of great importance.

INRIA is the French national institute for research in computer science and control. DEMAR project’s research interests are centered on the human sensory motor modeling, including muscles, sensory feedbacks, and neural motor networks.

Research Direction:

Identification of biomechanical dynamics and muscle dynamics for neurologically damaged patient is already challenging as the system response can drastically vary depending on the degree of the patient deficiencies. In FES (Functional Electrical Stimulation), movement synthesis and control are still a challenging task due to the complexity of whole body dynamics computation and the nonlinearity of stimulated muscle dynamics. One of the challenge concerns the feedback (torque, EMG, joint angle) that can be used to control joint angle, torque or stiffness. Moreover, control strategies have to be designed in order to be performed on portable architecture and tuned through advanced modeling and simulation.

In this context, the goal of this PhD work is to study the optimization-based motion synthesis and real-time control framework which can generate stimulation patterns from the pre-computed motion synthesis database. Motion capture system together with the estimation of the Center of Mass would be used to assess the strategies. This work aims at the development of automatic method to establish deficient limb stability in computer-aided rehabilitation.

The Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore offers a 3 year Program of Doctoral Studies in Economics fully accredited worldwide.

The Program, taught entirely in English, provides an excellent training for study and research in the various fields of economics. It has a long and consolidated tradition of post-graduate teaching and research in both theoretical and applied economics. Algebraic Coding Theory
The PhD student will be associated with the group Mathematics for Communication at the Department of Mathematical Sciences (http://www.math.aau.dk/). This group is also part of the Danish-Chinese Center for Applications of Algebraic Geometry in Coding and Cryptography. The center is the framework of the PhD stipend. The project will be in algebraic coding theory.

Theme: Determinants of political beliefs

At the Department of Political Science and Public Management, five PhD scholarships within the programme "Beliefs in Politics: Actors and Determinants (Elites, Frames, and Personalities)" are available for appointment for a period of three years as of October 1, 2010 or as soon as possible hereafter. The PhD scholarship must be completed over a three-year period, and at least two of the three years, the workplace will be in Odense, Denmark. Upon approval by the advisor and the programme director up to one year can be spent at a foreign university. The allocation of a PhD scholarship presupposes enrolment in the PhD programme in Political Science at the Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Southern Denmark.

We look for candidates with a Master Degree in political science, political psychology or political communication (or a related field) who have distinguished themselves at the MA level and, preferably, have written a Master thesis about social, institutional, psychological and contextual determinants of political beliefs, attitudes, and behaviour. We prefer applicants whose strengths lie within methods, quantitative and/or qualitative. Only candidates with top academic qualifications will be considered for enrolment.

The PhD scholarships are funded by the Danish government as "mobility scholarships" which means that candidates from the University of Southern Denmark are not eligible to apply.

• The effect of (a) elite communication and framing strategies and (b) quality of information on mass opinion, attitudes, and behaviour.
• The influence of individual level variables, in particular personality traits and genetic factors on mass opinion, attitudes, and behaviour. The research programme has just finished a survey among Danish twins on political attitudes and behaviour, and a representative survey on personality traits and political attitudes and behaviour. PhD students will have access to these data sources.

As a part of the scholarship, an individual programme must be followed, covering PhD courses, seminars, and active participation in conferences and workshops. The PhD student is expected to obtain teaching experiences and competences in other forms of communication and presentation. As a part of the PhD study programme, the PhD student is expected to make an extended visit to a research institution abroad for a semester or more. We also encourage PhD students to attend international conferences and summer schools. All activities are fully funded by the research programme. The assistants will be employed on a fixed-term contract and will be active in the Institute of Statistics, University of Neuchâtel for the full duration of this position.

The successful candidate is expected to conduct research towards the completion of a Ph. D. Thesis.

They will function as a teaching assistant for bachelor and master level courses and expected to interact with the students and to assist them in their learning effort. The teaching is both in French and English.

PhD Scholarships in Nanoscience and Nanotechnology

The International Max Planck Research School for Science and Technology of Nanostructures is intended for young scientists and researchers who wish to obtain their doctorate degree. The research students work on experimental or theoretical projects in the interdisciplinary field of nanostructures and their properties. They will be provided with additional training in form of lectures, workshops and soft
skill courses. The language of the Research School is English.

We are looking for excellent international and German students from physics, chemistry, engineering sciences or similar fields. The students should hold a degree equivalent to a Master or Diploma degree from a German university.

The Research School is a joint initiative of the Martin-Luther-University, the Fraunhofer Institute for Mechanics of Materials, and the Max Planck Institute of Microstructure Physics in Halle.

Defap Graduate School offers 7 Ph.D. scholarships in Economics with a special focus on Public Economics. The PhD is a joint project by Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore Milano and Università degli Studi Milano-Bicocca.

The programme is taught in English. Economics and quantitative methods form the core of the DEFAP programme. Our students are in daily contact with prestigious academics and are exposed to a culture of openness and diversity.

Position are for three years and include a scholarship of € 13.600 gross per year plus School tuition fee.

The Polymer Research Group in the Analytical and Organic Chemistry Department at the Rovira i Virgili University of Tarragona (Spain) invite applications for a: Two PhD Student Positions (starting September, 2010)

The focus of research will be in line with our concern with the valorization of renewable resources for the development of green polymers. Vegetable oils and derivatives will be the main chemical feedstock. The successful candidates will develop his PhD with the synthesis of monomers and polymers vegetable oils using novel synthetic methodologies and polymerisation techniques. Moreover, polymer characterization will be undertaken as PhD activity.

Applicants must have a degree satisfying the university requirements to follow the PhD program (Chemistry degree). Master degree is advantageous. Please send a CV, a brief description of research experience and interests, and names of 3 references.
