The project is granted by the French Ministry of High Education and Research for 3 years. The PHD student should be eligible to the grant conditions required by the French Ministry of High Education and Research (see http://www.legifrance.gouv.fr and search “contrat doctoral”. The grants are expected to start on 1st October 2011. The selection of candidates will be done before the end of May 2011.

The Applications should be sent to Dr. Samir Aberkane (samir.aberkane[ at ]cran.uhp-nancy.fr) or Prof. C. Aubrun (christophe.aubrun[ at ]cran.uhp-nancy.fr) and considered until 1st May.

Project description:
Reconfigurable Control Systems: A Semi-Markovian Jump System Approach
Fault Tolerant Control Systems (FTCS) aim at guaranteeing that a process keeps fulfilling its mission even in the presence of failures, although possibly in a degraded mode. For the design problem, two basic approaches have been studied: passive fault tolerance rely on robust control principles where the faults are considered as modeling uncertainties. Active Fault Tolerant Control (AFTC), on the other hand, involves automatically detecting and identifying the failed components using a Fault Detection and Identification (FDI) scheme and then reconfiguring the control law on-line in response to the FDI algorithm decisions. Despite the evident interaction between FDI and reconfiguration algorithms, the research on FDI and reconfiguration methods has often evolved separately. Typically, in the reconfiguration literature, it is usually assumed that a perfect FDI device is available (i.e. no detection delays, no false alarms, no missed detection, etc.). On the other hand, an FDI algorithm is judged satisfactory if it detects failures quickly and generates few false alarms, regardless of the performance of the closed-loop reconfigured system. However, when the FDI output is feedback into a reconfiguration closed-loop control, a short detection delay and a low false alarm rate do not guarantee stable operation of the reconfigurable system. This makes the synthesis of reconfigurable controllers that take explicitly into account the inherent imperfections of the FDI process of great importance.

The candidates are expected to have a Master in computer science, electrical engineering or related areas with experience in one (or more) of the following areas:
-Control theory
-Stochastic differential (difference) equations
-Probability theory
-Optimization

How to Apply?
In brief, you will need to submit electronically,
-A detailed CV including a list of publications
-A motivation letter including a brief statement about research interests and motivation to join the project, and the name and contact of 2 references

Scholarship for ICT4D Masters, The University of Manchester, UK
Whole body control framework for lower limb stability in computational rehabilitation

Project:

INRIA is the French national institute for research in computer science and control. DEMAR project’s research interests are centered on the human sensory motor modeling, including muscles, sensory feedbacks, and neural motor networks.

http://www.lirmm.fr/demar/

Research Direction:

Identification of biomechanical dynamics and muscle dynamics for neurologically damaged patient is already challenging as the system response can drastically vary depending on the degree of the patient deficiencies. In FES (Functional Electrical Stimulation), movement synthesis and control are still a challenging task due to the complexity of whole body dynamics computation and the nonlinearity of stimulated muscle dynamics. One of the challenge concerns the feedback (torque, EMG, joint angle) that can be used to control joint angle, torque or stiffness. Moreover, control strategies have to be designed in order to be performed on portable architecture and tuned through advanced modeling and simulation.

In this context, the goal of this PhD work is to study the optimization-based motion synthesis and real-time control framework which can generate stimulation patterns from the pre-computed motion synthesis database. Motion capture system together with the estimation of the Center of Mass would be used to assess the strategies. This work aims at the development of automatic method to establish deficient limb stability in computer-aided rehabilitation.

This PhD work is performed under the collaborative project named @walk (artificial walking) between INRIA DEMAR project and AI lab of Stanford University. http://www.lirmm.fr/~fraisse/@WALK/

Experimental protocols will be carried out with our clinical partners.

Research Background:

The PhD scholarship must be completed over a three-year period, and at least two of the three years, the workplace will be in Odense, Denmark. Upon approval by the advisor and the programme director up to one year can be spent at a foreign university. The allocation of a PhD scholarship presupposes enrolment in the PhD programme in Political Science at the Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Southern Denmark.

We look for candidates with a Master Degree in political science, political psychology or political communication (or a related field) who have distinguished themselves at the MA level and, preferably, have written a Master thesis about social, institutional, psychological and contextual determinants of political beliefs, attitudes, and behaviour. We prefer applicants whose strengths lie within methods, quantitative and/or qualitative. Only candidates with top academic qualifications will be considered for enrolment.

The PhD scholarships are funded by the Danish government as "mobility scholarships" which means that candidates from the University of Southern Denmark are not eligible to apply.

The application must include a detailed description of the PhD project. In addition to a general problem formulation, it should discuss relevant theory, propositions/hypotheses, research design and methods, and include a work schedule. The project description cannot exceed 7 pages. In addition to the full project description, a summary of no more than 250 words must be included.

The project must relate to the general theme of the programme. We are interested in the formation of political beliefs at both the elite and the mass level, and we particularly welcome projects that explicitly integrate insights from political science, (political) psychology, communication theory, and genetics/biology. In spite of the cross-disciplinary ambitions of the programme, the project must be relevant to political science. When we select PhD students for the programme, we are eager to cover the following broad sub-themes:

• The institutional, organizational, political and psychological determinants of elite communication and framing strategies (elites include politicians, experts, journalists, etc.).
• The influence of elite information, communication and framing strategies on the attitudes and behaviour of other elite groups.
• The effect of (a) elite communication and framing strategies and (b) quality of information on mass opinion, attitudes, and behaviour.
• The influence of individual level variables, in particular personality traits and genetic factors on mass opinion, attitudes, and behaviour. The research programme has just finished a survey among Danish twins on political attitudes and behaviour, and a representative survey on personality traits and political attitudes and behaviour. PhD students will have access to these data sources.

As a part of the scholarship, an individual programme must be followed, covering PhD courses, seminars, and active participation in conferences and workshops. The PhD student is expected to obtain teaching experiences and competences in other forms of communication and presentation. As a part of the PhD study programme, the PhD student is expected to make an extended visit to a research institution abroad for a semester or more. We also encourage PhD students to attend international conferences and summer schools. All activities are fully funded by the research programme. It is likewise expected that the student participates in the Department's various activities and spends regular hours at the Department.

For further information about the PhD programme please contact PhD coordinator, Associate Professor Niels Ejersbo, tel. +45 6550 3193 begin_of_the_skype_highlighting +45 6550 3193 end_of_the_skype_highlighting, e-mail: niels@sam.sdu.dk, or programme director Professor Asbjørn Sonne Nørgaard, tel. +45 6550 4305 begin_of_the_skype_highlighting +45 6550 4305 end_of_the_skype_highlighting, e-mail: ano@sam.sdu.dk. The PhD in General Management (3-year program) is organized by the Department of Management of the University of Bologna (www.sa.unibo.it).

In order to apply, a Master degree (laurea specialistica/magistrale) is required. The next edition of the PhD in General Management (26th cycle) will start in October 2010. 8 students will be admitted to the program and 4 scholarships will be offered. The number of scholarship-assisted places may increase thanks to the financial support of public or private institutions. The net amount of the scholarship is around 1000 Euro per month, for a 3-year period. The amount of the scholarship can be increased during the research period spent abroad (+50%) and through assistantships in teaching or contract research activities. Applications from foreign students are encouraged.

For further details on the PhD program in General Management, the admission requirements and the selection procedures, please visit the website.

or contact the PhD Coordinator, Professor Federico Munari (federico.munari[ at ]unibo.it).

The call for application will be available on this website.

Deadline to submit all the application documents: 21 June 2010

Please kindly mention ScholarshipNet when applying for this position

Switzerland: PhD Positions in Statistics/Econometrics, University of Neuchâtel
