Check out their unique offerings in the savings account space.

If you’re on the lookout for innovative bank products (like I am) then you may want to turn your attention to EverBank. I’ve been keeping up with them because they are one of the few resources I’ve found that offered interesting financial products that I couldn’t find anywhere else. Plus, they handily address a lot of my personal investment requirements.

Here’s the quick scoop. While EverBank provides many financial services from mortgage banking to investing, they’re actually quite well known for their online banking and consumer products, from high yield checking and high interest savings accounts to money market accounts and CDs that are denominated in both U.S. and foreign currencies. Considered as one of the largest online banks in the U.S., EverBank has received the Forbes “Best of The Web” recognition from 2000 to 2005.

Here’s a quick summary of their product offerings, which are mostly safe savings accounts with a few intriguing exceptions:

For a no monthly fee high interest checking account, you can take a look at EverBank’s Yield Pledge Checking Account. This account was formerly known as the FreeNet Checking Account but has since been renamed. They do require an opening minimum balance of $1,500, but if you can afford it, you may want to check out this account for the following features:
Latest Promo: Receive $60 for opening a checking account. Offer expires November 30, 2011.The yield promises to be in the “top 5% of competitive accounts” across leading banks (as per their “yield pledge”. Currently you’ll make 8X more than the national average with this account. There’s no minimum balance required to receive interest. There are NO monthly charges and NO debit card fees. You will be reimbursed for all ATM fees, regardless of which ATM you decide to use. They are of course, covered by the FDIC.Online bill pay is free for accounts that contain at least $5K as an average daily balance. Also, online and mobile banking is free. They’ll pay you $50 if you decide to take your business elsewhere ($50 satisfaction guarantee!). Numerous awards including Money Magazine’s “Best of Breed” and Kiplinger’s “Best Checking Account”.Open an EverBank Yield Pledge Checking Account and receive $60.

The EverBank Yield Pledge CD is described as a high yielding certificate of deposit (relatively speaking) that is covered by EverBank’s “yield pledge”, which simply means that the bank ensures that their yields will always be at the top 5% of competitive accounts. Their rates range from 0.35% APY for a 3 month CD all the way to 1.90% APY for a 5 year CD. Accounts are FDIC insured. The only downside is that they require a minimum opening balance of $1,500. Some other great features? You can opt for automatic rollovers or ask to be notified by a bank representative when your CD is about to mature (notifications occur 20 days prior to maturity).
Here’s where to sign up for an EverBank Yield Pledge CD.

Another FDIC insured product, the EverBank Yield Pledge Money Market Account has a .76% APY. Again, they require an opening balance of at least $1,500. Also, it’s only free if you maintain at least $5,000 in your account, otherwise it’ll cost you $8.95 a month to keep your money here. Given the relatively lower savings rates at this time, you may get more mileage from the Yield Pledge Checking account, which has some pretty attractive features that are focused on lowering costs instead.
Here’s where to find out more about the EverBank Yield Pledge Money Market Account.
Note: Following are EverBank’s unique foreign CDs. However, note that they are not available at this time and are only offered on occasion.
Okay now we come to the fun part! This is what I particularly appreciate about EverBank — they have a series of “WorldCurrency” products which I look upon as great diversifiers for any investment portfolio. Here’s what I mean: for foreign exposure, most of us own foreign equity mutual funds. But if you’re nervous about the volatility that stocks and currency exchange rates bring, then here’s the perfect product for you: the EverBank MarketSafe CD. What’s interesting is that this offering only comes around once in a while based on current market conditions, so you’ll need to apply for an account prior to a particular deadline (the last application deadline was on October 8, 2009) in order to participate in it.

The MarketSafe BRIC CD has a term of 3 years and gives you exposure to the 4 BRIC currencies: the Brazilian real, Russian ruble, Indian rupee and Chinese renminbi. Basically, you’ll make money if the BRIC currencies gain against the dollar upon the CD’s maturity at the end of its 3 year term. If your investment does not increase or goes down in value, you won’t be losing any money. In this case, you’ll get 100% of your principal back after the 3 years is up. So there’s no downside (except the potential loss of interest over 3 years)! It requires a reasonable $1,500 minimum deposit.

It’s something I’m seriously contemplating on as a great way to diversify my international holdings. You’ll need to check up on it now if you want to be part of their next offering.

If you’re unable to invest in the BRIC CD (because it’s unavailable), then there are still other ways to invest globally with EverBank. They have a ton of other foreign currency based CDs but these carry with them the currency risk inherent in international investments. So it’s safe to say that they’re only FDIC insured for bank insolvency, not for fluctuations in the value of your investment. If you’re interested in exploring diversification through foreign currencies, then you can check out the following products:

For more on foreign currency investments and research, check out this link!

All these products are available through both regular and IRA accounts. There are a whole slew of investment and savings options that are available with EverBank, many of which are not readily available through other banks. If you are looking for no-risk accounts, you can check out their Yield Pledge products. On the other hand, if you’re more interested in diversified foreign CDs or precious metals investments (which aren’t considered staples in most banks), then do take a look at EverBank’s commodity baskets (e.g. WorldCurrency CD baskets and Metals Select Gold and Silver accounts). You can also open an EverTrade brokerage account to trade traditional equity and bond securities.
Open an IRA account with EverBank here.
Created September 3, 2009. who are willing to work hard and accept a “below market” rate salary of $30,000. In exchange, they will each get $25,000 worth of options struck at $1/share with a three year vest.

We believe our company will grow by 50% a year for the next 5 years. In other words, a new hire’s $25,000 worth of options will be worth $200,000 in five years, and if the company keeps growing by 50% for another 5 years, the options will be worth $1.45 million, 58X the original amount. Finally, employees get options every single year they work at a discounted price, meaning one could potentially earn multiple millions of dollars in 10 years.

Of course, we also realize that execution is key because ideas are a dime a dozen. All our stock and options could expire worthless if we don’t property execute. People are what will make our company successful. Because we aren’t paying the market rate of $60-70,000 for recent graduates + options, we don’t have the pick of the litter. If only everyone believed in our company as much as we did, they would be lining up to work for us.

One of your favorite posts is, “How Much Do The Top Income Earners Make” which makes a statement that “the rich will always pay more than their fair share” as the top 1% earn 20% of all income but pay almost double their share of taxes at 38%. 38% is 18% more than 20% no matter how much you think the rich should pay.

You then come across this one recent graduate who is looking for a job. She leaves this comment as a retort to the post. Obviously she’s brighter than most because she reads personal finance sites and spends the time to comment. She’s available for hire and is willing to relocate anywhere to get the job. However, nobody has hired her, she may have a difficult time working more than 40 hours a week, and she didn’t go to a great school. Do you go for it? You’re in desperate need of people to build your company!

READY FOR WORK, HIRE ME

Wow.. You really, truly do spew an insane amount of ignorance here.. First of all, if you are working more than 40 hours a week, then you either do not have a family of your own at all or you severely neglect any wife and/or kids that you do have (and they, with 99% certainty, WILL hate you for this for the rest of their lives). In fact, working at that rate.. Despite however much money you might bring in, you will likely only find a wife who is with you for your money (what else do you have to offer when she never sees you?), infidelity on her part, children who feel as though they are bastards, and a likely divorce as soon as the wife can claim that she has become acclimated to this style of living and is deserving of 50% of everything you own =]

Beyond this, I can tell you.. I am a recent graduate from Miami University (in Ohio). No, this is not a Harvard, Stanford, Cornell, Princeton, Dartmouth, or anything of that sort, but it is openly recognized as being one of the top 50 universities in the nation. I received a bachelor degree after completing two majors, Psychology and Sociology. No, these are not Business, Engineering, or Computer Science degrees, but they are respectable nonetheless. I was deeply involved in a few student organizations and involved in the leadership of two and the creation of one throughout my college career. I was also involved in research, and I worked full-time through all of my summers and 20 hours/week each of the school years while taking an average of 18-20 credit hours per semester. I graduated with Latin Honors: Cum Laude and a GPA of 3.67, which, in my opinion, is pretty good.

While all of this admittedly might not have prepared me for many jobs that are available in today’s economy, I believe that it does show that I am driven, committed, and capable of learning. However, over the past 6 months (before and after graduating), I have applied for and either been completely ignored or denied from over 100 jobs. I will admit that I began applying for jobs that offer around 50k/yr in salary, but, over time, I learned to reduce my expectations significantly. I began to apply for jobs that pay only 25-30k/yr and would have been more than happy, but found that I was not wanted there either. In fact, I have even reduced myself to applying to places like Best Buy, local factories, Wal-Mart, Kroger etc. and have still found that there is no job to be had.

Now, tell me, does this make me lazy? I can’t even receive unemployment, because I have not ever had any official employment that was not ended on my own volition. Where am I supposed to be working these two jobs when I can’t even find one? I can’t even find a place that will give me part-time work, much less those 40 hours. Even when I was working full-time over my summers, I was still only getting 30-35 hours in a week, and I’m supposed to be working more than 40 hours a week now? I would honestly prefer a job that pays me 35k to work 40 hours in a week, because I actually do have friends and a life…

So.. Again. Where are these two jobs coming from? Are you going to hire me? If anyone on here wants to hire me, then I will gladly relocate to wherever it is that you need me to be =D But.. I don’t see that one happening. All I see is people saying that the rich create jobs. I don’t see any of them actually doing it. And, by the way.. It’s obvious that many of you on here are rich. Just saying…

THE DECISION IS YOURS

As the CEO of your new start-up, do you or do you not interview this person to work for you? You’re dedicating your life and your savings to your start-up and need to hire people now. If you don’t hire within the next month, you risk losing your head-start advantage and having your competitors gain tremendous amount of market share and pull away from you.

Do you believe you can find someone better with your below market rate compensation in a month’s time? Do you believe the above person will be willing to work weekends at your start-up to get the job done? Can you see the person stay hungry for the next five years? The difference between success and failure is depending on you, Mr or Mrs CEO.

Regards,

Sam

Related posts:
Resolving My Insurance Company Home Premium ScamAre There Really People Who Only Work 40 Hours A Week Or Less?

View the original article here

<IMG border="0"width="1"height="1"src="http://www.shoutcastin.com/images/blog/forexbox.jpg">

Saving Pennies or Dollars? Investment Fees

Saving Pennies or Dollars is a new semi-regular series on The Simple Dollar, inspired by a great discussion on The Simple Dollar’s Facebook page concerning frugal tactics that might not really save that much money. I’m going to take some of the scenarios described by the readers there and try to break down the numbers to see if the savings is really worth the time invested.

Kelly writes in: My husband I have lots of hobbies/interests and finances do not excite either of us so we are not savvy. We are great savers but don’t really know what to do with the money. We have our retirement accounts through work (Fidelity) and an emergency fund in a high interest checking account. In addition we had about $60,000.00 (that we don’t have plans for) in Vanguard money market funds until the rates dropped and we were not earning any interest. Because there is not a Vanguard office near our home (and we did not know where to put the money) we met with an advisor at Fidelity. We moved the money into stock market accounts and have made a significant amount of money. I have heard and read that Fidelity has higher fees than say, Vanguard, but if we can meet with an advisor yearly and are making significant money on this money do you think it is worth it? Or, is there a way to figure out what funds to put the money in at Vanguard? Are we talking about saving pennies or dollars?

In this instance, you’re comparing apples to oranges. Comparing a Vanguard money market account to a Fidelity stock fund isn’t even close to a realistic comparison. Money market accounts are typically invested in things that would be considered ultraconservative, like U.S. treasury notes. On the other hand, stock funds are invested in the stocks of companies and, by their very nature, are much more volatile, with big gains and big losses within the realm of possibility.

The only way to really gauge the impact of investment fees is to compare identical investments from two separate investment houses, which is extremely difficult since it’s rare for two investment houses to have identical offerings. Even if you compare very similar investments, like the Vanguard 500 and the Spartan 500, it’s still not an exact comparison because of small variations between the funds.

For example, with the funds above, the basic level investor shares of the Vanguard 500 has an expense ratio of 0.17%, with Admiral shares (with a minimum investment of $10,000 required) havving an expense ratio of 0.06%. The Spartan 500, offered by Fidelity, is somewhere in the middle at 0.10% (but has a $10,000 minimum investment). This gives an overall nod to Vanguard based solely on the expense ratios.

How much does that save, though? Let’s say you invested $10,000 in each of those two funds. An expense ratio means that, in a given year, that percentage of the assets is being used to maintain the fund, employ the people running it, and so on.

So, at the end of 2009, a fund with a 0.06% expense ratio might have a face value of $10,000. Another fund with an expense ratio of 0.10% also has a face value of $10,000.

During the year 2010, the assets in those funds gain, let’s say, 2%. At the end of that year, the 0.06% expense ratio fund would have a balance somewhere close to $10,193.88 (depending, of course, when the expenses were taken out) and the 0.10% expense ratio fund would have a balance close to $10,189.80. This amounts to $4.08.

In other words, when the difference in expense ratios is small and your investment amount is relatively small, the amount of money you’re saving and losing is small.

However, let’s say you’re investing $1,000,000. The amount of money due to the difference in expense ratios is much closer to $408, and suddenly you’re talking about significant money.

Even with the $60,000 mentioned in the question, you’re talking about an approximate annual difference of $24.08, which may be less than the value they get from talking face-to-face with an advisor.

What about the difference in expense ratios? Let’s say that one fund has an expense ratio of 0.06% and the other has a ratio of 0.60%. You’re talking about a rough difference of $55.08 per year on an investment of $10,000, and $5,508 per year on an investment of $1,000,000. That’s a big difference.

Again, these types of comparisons only mean anything if you’re comparing very similar investments. The greater the difference between the investments, the less it means in the sense of a direct comparison.

As a rule of thumb, I usually subtract the expense ratio from the annual return numbers on any investment I look at. Although this isn’t anything like an exact comparison, it does give me an idea of how much I’m going to be hamstrung by their expense ratio over the years.

Usually, this leads me to investments with very low ratios. Usually, I find these types of investments at Vanguard or Fidelity, the two places you mention.

It is important to note that you shouldn’t just chase low expense ratios when you’re investing. Putting everything in the investment with the lowest expense ratio isn’t well diversified and will lose you money.

To put it simply, when you’re investing small amounts and the difference between the expenses in comparable investments is small, you’re talking about pennies (or a few dollars). But if either of those factors grows large, you’re quickly talking about dollars – and often lots of dollars.

View the original article here

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://mdconline-financialreview.blogspot.com/2011/10/saving-pennies-or-dollars-investment.html' title='Saving Pennies or Dollars? Can you afford to risk getting sick? Thanks to the government, most of us know that getting a flu shot is the best way to avoid getting the flu. But for many people, the threat of any sickness pales in comparison to facing the needle, while others are allergic to the flu shot medium and have no choice but to forgo the yearly vaccination.

Finding yourself in the no-flu-shot camp may not be ideal, but you can still take steps to minimize your risks of getting the flu. As a registered nurse, I have come to learn a few tricks you should know about when it comes to avoiding the flu. Here are a few easy ones to follow:

12 Tips for Avoiding the Flu (without a flu shot)
Know when flu season occurs. Most people know that the flu generally peaks during January to February of each year, but the actual duration and intensity of each year’s flu season fluctuates. You can monitor the current situation in the U.S. by visiting the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) website. During peak times, avoid spending time in public places whenever possible and avoid visiting the doctor’s office, hospital, nursing home, airport, and shopping centers. Avoid flying, taking elevators, and sharing transportation (like taxi cabs and the bus) during peak times. Avoid any close confined space with others during the flu season.Handwashing is the all-purpose disease preventer and is effective in limiting the spread of the flu in most cases. Wash with soap (antibacterial soap isn’t necessary) and warm water for a full 20-30 seconds. Include your fingernails, the backs of your hands, and in between fingers. Keep your nails short, use a nailbrush when washing, and avoid wearing rings if possible. (Artificial nails are a breeding ground for germs, and should be removed if you are concerned about contracting or passing on the flu.) Read about the CDC’s guidelines for washing your hands to make sure you are washing properly to prevent the spread of disease. Teach kids to wash properly and encourage your co-workers to wash as well. Keep hand sanitizers readily available during flu season and offer it to others often.Regularly disinfect doorknobs, the telephone, light switches, car keys, the fridge door, faucets, and the toilet to help stop the spread of germs. Often, you can pass on the flu bug before you even know you are infected, so regular cleaning during flu season helps lessen your chances of picking up a bug.Avoid public restrooms whenever possible. Don’t put your purse, briefcase, computer case, or backpack on the floor – ever. The floor is contaminated with all kinds of germs. (We cultured the bottom of our shoes worn only in the nursing lab during nursing school and came up with Chlamydia (an STD), dozens of strains of Staphylococcus (commonly found in infected wounds), that year’s flu virus, and a whole host of other disgusting bugs.)Take off your shoes at the door. Keep a separate pair of indoor shoes or slippers to be worn around the house to prevent tracking germs from the outside world into your home.Open public doors with a paper towel, handkerchief, or your rear end whenever possible – not your bare hands.Wash your hands thoroughly before applying makeup, putting in contact lenses, after blowing your nose or sneezing, and before eating.Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth at all costs. Don’t chew on pencils, pens, your fingernails, or other non-food items. Clean the outside of canned goods with hot soapy water before opening and wash your hands after touching any food packaging when preparing meals.Clean the shopping cart handle with a disinfectant and wash immediately after handling money. Disinfect your hands after using the ATM, the gas pump, after petting animals, and after collecting the daily mail.Take care of your body during flu season with plenty of rest, a balanced diet, and lots of water and exercise. Eat plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables during the flu season – 50% of each meal should be comprised of fruits and veggies. Take a high-quality, liquid multivitamin everyday. (Yes, it should be a LIQUID, not a pill, for better absorption.)De-stress. Stress is possibly the leading contributing factor to any illness. Exercise, take time for R&R, and spend quiet time alone to reduce your stress levels every day. Get counseling and deal with any unresolved issues in your close personal relationships.Try a little alcohol. While drinking alcohol isn’t found on any doctor’s advice sheet, hordes of my patients over the years swear by the power of alcohol to fend off sickness. (Think of the old home remedy of making Hot Toddies for colds and fevers.) Vodka and fruit juices (like grapefruit or orange) are favorite home remedies for preventing the flu.
What tips do you have for staying healthy during the bleak winter months? In addition, you can now mix points and cash when redeeming ThankYou points at a 33% premium for travel.)

The Citi ThankYou Premier Card is now offering 50,000 bonus ThankYou Points after $2,500 in purchases within 3 months of account opening. That is enough to redeem for $500 in gift cards or $665 in airfare when you redeem through their ThankYou Travel Center. There is no annual fee for the first year, $125 after that. Let’s take a closer look at how this breaks down.

You can view your redemption options at ThankYou.com. In general, it takes 10,000 ThankYou (TY) points to redeem for a $100 gift card to retailers like Gap, Banana Republic, Barnes & Noble, Bath and Body Works, Bed Bath & Beyond, Cabelas, CVS Pharmacy, Kohl’s, Land’s End, LL Bean, Sears, Lowe’s, Home Depot, Staples, and Walmart. So with 50,000 TY points, you could get five $100 gift cards from different stores.

Want something closer to cash? For a check mailed to you, it costs 8,000 points for $50. For a statement credit, it’s 7,500 points for $75. A check mailed towards your mortgage payment or student loan (made out to your lender) costs 7,500 points for $75. You could also redeem your points for a Walmart gift card and then sell it for cash at a site like PlasticJungle.com that offers you 91 cents on the dollar. 50k points would net you $455 in cash.

Now let’s look at the advertised airplane ticket option. A good question is whether a flight booked through the ThankYou Travel Center costs the same as through any other travel site like Expedia, Orbitz, etc. I have some old ThankYou points laying around, so I went to the redemption site and found that the prices are very closely aligned to what is offered at sites like Expedia.com. I did a few quick searches for random flights, and the cost of the flight matched up with the cost in points in a 100:1 ratio. For example, the exact same flight below that cost $360 including taxes and fees on Expedia would cost 36,000 TY points.

ThankYou Travel Center screenshot:

Expedia.com screenshot:

So the pricing seems fair, no inflated prices or hidden fees. However, with this specific Premier card with the annual fee, you also get 33% more value when redeemed for airfare. Thus, 50,000 points can be redeemed for $665 in airfare, which would typically require 66,500 points. Since you can book any flight that can be found on Expedia, there are “no blackout dates”.

Update October 2011: Let’s say you found a ticket for $200 = 15,000 points, but only have 10,000 points in your account. Citi now lets you pay the difference, so in this case you can get your $200 ticket for 10,000 points and $67. This makes it much easier to use up all of your points at a 33% premium.

Some other highlights of the card:
No foreign transaction fee on purchases.Earn 1.2 ThankYou Points per $1 spent at gas stations, supermarkets, drugstores, commuter transportation and parking merchants. Earn 1 ThankYou Point for every $1 spent on all other purchases. No limits on earning points or expiration dates.Earn points for the miles you fly as well when you purchase a ticket with your Citi ThankYou Premier Card.Other smaller perks, like 200 bonus points for signing up for online account access, 200 points for paperless statements, and a 1-5% bonus on your existing point balance on your annual card anniversary.Annual complimentary domestic companion ticket. What can we expect if our bank gets bought out?

Some years ago, Washington Mutual was known for online banking products such as a savings account that offered a high yield for linking with a checking account. Unfortunately, WaMu was the most prominent bank affected by the financial crisis. Let’s go over what can happen when a bank “fails” — and how it can affect your money.

Bank failures aren’t necessarily uncommon, but from 2008 and onwards, things got dicier for the banking industry. Scores of banks have failed in recent years. These failures have occurred to banks of different sizes that are located in a variety of states. Typically, you’ll find that a state or federal banking agency will move in on a failing bank when that bank owes more than it can pay back to its depositors.

When Washington Mutual suffered from the subprime mortgage crisis, it lost a great deal of its value. A bank run resulted when a number of depositors withdrew billions of dollars in a span of 10 days. This bank run drove the Office of Thrift Supervision to seize WaMu, which made this the largest bank failure to happen in the U.S. to date.

The FDIC then stepped in to auction off WaMu to JPMorgan Chase. That meant that WaMu’s customers were absorbed by Chase’s banking division. Rather than completely suspend services for WaMu account holders, the FDIC indicated that deposits would continue to be accepted and that checks would be processed as usual. ATMs and online banking remained available.

Eventually, these customers were able to use Chase’s ATMs for their deposits and to transact business in Chase’s branches. After some months (by the end of 2009), WaMu branches across the nation were either closed or became Chase branches. Now, the former WaMu accounts have been fully transitioned to Chase accounts.

Fees aside, there’s still good news for existing customers of an acquired bank. You might be wondering what to do if your bank faces the possibility of failure. Thanks to FDIC coverage, you don’t have to worry about losing every penny you have. This is because the FDIC’s insurance covers each depositor for up to $250,000 per ownership category. Your savings and checking accounts are protected up to this amount. So are NOW, money market deposit accounts, and even certificates of deposit. If you have more than the maximum in one account, you should find another bank for the amount that isn’t covered.

If your bank fails, the FDIC will let you know by mail. When another bank buys your bank, you’ll get another letter informing you. According to the FDIC’s list of bank failures, the majority of failed banks are taken over by other banks.

Should you immediately move to another bank or credit union if your bank is acquired by another institution? Following are some strategies you can follow if you are pondering this question:

1. Learn about the acquiring bank. This might be a good idea. That’s because the new bank might actually offer favorable items like free checking or decent interest rates for its incoming customers. WaMu’s customers gained access to Chase’s line of credit cards, for example.

2. Compare the acquiring bank against the alternatives. Take some time to visit the acquiring bank’s branches and listen to what the word of mouth about the bank might be. Compare this bank’s reputation to that of any competitors you’re eyeing. It isn’t worth the hassle to make a long drive to a bank that’s farther away or to one that doesn’t have the benefits you’d prefer.

3. Wait things out and keep the status quo. Don’t act rashly. Your old ATM cards may remain in service during the transition, and you’re likely to be able to access your account online. Your old checks will probably still be processed as usual, until the new bank discloses new terms. Also, it’s best for you to continue to make your loan payments as usual until you’re directed to a new payment address or location. Wait out the transition period before you decide to leave. Bank acquisitions are complex negotiations that take time, so it may be six months or longer before you notice anything different with your rates or fees.

4. Be prepared for possible changes to existing accounts. It’s possible for your bank to have its products transition to other types with added fees. This is when you should decide whether it makes sense to make changes. For instance, WaMu’s former customers learned that their free checking accounts were transitioning to a fee-based type of account. We’ve written about how the popular WaMu Free Checking account turned into the Chase Total Checking account. The bank sure couldn’t wait to start charging their customers some bank fees. So be aware that your new bank may adjust your account’s terms and may modify the services you’re offered.

5. Don’t forget to monitor your deposits through a transition period. Unclaimed deposits are sent to the FDIC for processing. After that, the FDIC turns over the unclaimed deposits to the state you list as your address on your account.

As we’ve learned from the last few tumultuous years, a bank failure can strike large banks like WaMu or even the friendly, smaller local banks that have been around for decades. However, since other banks tend to take over the failures, you’re more likely to transition to a new bank than to utterly lose your money. Such was the case when WaMu’s customers were picked up by Chase. Make sure you’re aware of your bank’s FDIC coverage and general state of health and you’ll go a long way to protect your assets.
Created July 11, 2008. Updated October 19, 2011. From the $38.5 trillion number, that seems to refer to the budget cut deal that averted a US government shutdown in April 2011. In any case, it does make the numbers much more easy to grasp.

Some stats about the US government:
U.S. Tax revenue: $2,170,000,000,000Fed budget: $3,820,000,000,000New debt: $ 1,650,000,000,000National debt: $14,271,000,000,000Recent budget cuts: $ 38,500,000,000
Now, remove 8 zeroes and pretend it’s a household budget:
Annual family income: $21,700Money the family spent: $38,200New debt on the credit card: $16,500Outstanding balance on the credit card: $142,710Total budget cuts: $385
I know that this is macroeconomics vs. microeconomics. But the orders of magnitude are correct, and it can’t look good to anybody. I’ve never really liked the macroeconomics theory that it’s okay for governments to carry huge amounts of debt as long as it’s “only” a certain percentage of GDP. The idea is that you’ll grow your way out of it.

Now, I’m more of a microeconomics guy. I try to figure out the rules of the game and play it the best that I can. I avoid getting emotionally involved in things that I view are out of my control. But to me, it just seems like all the politicians ever do is kick the can down the road. You can’t do that forever.
Find more in Taxes | 10/14/11, 5:00am | Trackback

View the original article here

The Thrill Of Paying Down Debt And Having No Money Is Addicting

Your request to visit website www.financialsamurai.com has been blocked. She’s worked for herself for a little over a year.

“I was completely fed up with being an employee,” Sabine recalled. “I had…how should I say it…interesting bosses. After the third or fourth bad experience, I knew I wanted to be my own boss.”

So she struck out on her own. While Sabine enjoyed the freedom, she struggled to bring in enough business. “I had no good clients. Everything was on-and-off. Nothing was stable.” She knew that if she was going to succeed, she needed to invest in herself. That’s when she decided to sign up for Earn1K.

“It was amazing! All the fears I had, everything I had thought about — ‘ahh, why can’t I do this, why can’t I do that?’ — you gave me answers for everything.” Sabine told me. “And now I know how you could do that. You had already asked your readers and network and participants so many questions, you knew the answers I was looking for.”

Sabine’s goal when she signed up for Earn1K was to make $2,800 and land three new clients by the end of the course. She only got one new client — but he paid her $5,600 a month.
“Before…I struggled to find the right price for my work. I didn’t know how to say I was worth the money. Now I know how to focus on benefits and present myself to clients.”

Sabine’s favorite tactic is the Briefcase Technique.

“I have a sales background. Lots of ideas about how to improve things, how to improve sales. I’ve worked for companies with less than 45 employees where there’s no marketing department, aside from the boss. So I’m used to coming up with ideas for improvement.”

She saw that one of her Xing contacts was looking for a marketing and office manager for their mobile development comapny. (Xing is like LinkedIn, but more popular in Germany, where she’s from.) Sabine contacted the company about the position, and they sent her a profile of the position they were looking to fill:

JOB PROFILE

Marketing:
Brainstorm and initiate Marketing activities
Write copy (case studies)
Create and send out marketing materials
Prepare events / trade fairs
Prepare and do sales presentations

PR:
Write blog posts
Twitter
Facebook
Website
Write press releases

Office Management:
Create office documents & spread sheets
CRM
Bookkeeping
Secretarial work (telephone, reception desk, office supplies, invoicing)

Sabine reviewed my video on the Briefcase Technique and started brainstorming ways she could fulfill and exceed his wish list.

“It’s really helpful to know what the client wants. If you know that, you can develop ideas around it. But it’s not necessary to have a job profile. You can use past experience to generate ideas. I drew on what I’ve done in past jobs and for previous clients. Or even just what makes sense — new websites, case studies, fixing mistakes. Things like that.”

Sabine used the company website and blog for most of her research. She also checked out their Twitter and Facebook pages, the Xing profiles of the company founders and did some basic Google searches.

Then she compiled her notes and arranged a meeting.

Sabine’s interview went well. They were amazed they found someone with experience in both marketing and office management. But before they could get into details, Sabine used the Briefcase Technique.

“I presented it before I told them what I charged. I said, ‘I’m sorry, if you don’t mind, I have a few ideas on some other ways I may be able to help you.’ I pulled out my sheet. In the beginning, you could see their jaws dropping.”

Sabine walked them through a list of things she could do for them on top of what they covered in the interview. That sealed the deal.

“They called me two days later with an offer. And one day was a holiday. They didn’t want me as a freelancer. They wanted to employ me because it would have been cheaper, but I didn’t want that. So we agreed on a two month trial contract. I know that without the Briefcase Technique, they wouldn’t have seen the value.”

Not only was that contract worth $5,600 a month, but Sabine raised her rates on the project from $50 an hour to $57 an hour. A 14% jump.

“I have to say, if your course stopped with the Briefcase Technique, I would still be thrilled.”

If you’re interested in getting free material on how Earn1K can help you earn more, click here.

View the original article here

25% off Purchases at Children’s Place + Other Retail Coupons

Children’s Place has issued a 25% off your purchase coupon for this weekend. The coupon is good for both in – store and online purchases. Use coupon code FIENDS at checkout to receive your savings. Coupon is valid through 10/29.

Another coupon available is this one for 30% off purchases at Dressbarn. This coupon is good for in – store and online purchases. Use coupon code EFF1011 at checkout to receive discount. You must:
Open a new Citibank checking account in the Citigold or Citibank Account Package by 10/31/2011.Enroll the new checking account in Citi ThankYou Rewards.Within 45 days after account opening, initiate one direct deposit AND complete one electronic bill payment for two consecutive months.
ThankYou Point Value Recap
There are a decent number of options for these poitns. 10,000 ThankYou points = $100 Wal-mart Gift card, which you can sell for a $95.55 Amazon.com gift certificate or $91 cash at PlasticJungle.com. Alternatively, can be worth $100 towards Expedia travel, a student loan, or paying down your mortgage. More details in the Citi $500 ThankYou card post.

Citibank Account: 20,000 ThankYou Point Bonus (Easier)
$100 minimum opening deposit$6,000 minimum balance in linked accounts (checking, savings, personal, credit card balances) to avoid $20 monthly fee.
Citigold Account: 40,000 ThankYou Point Bonus (Harder)
$500 minimum opening depositThere’s no monthly service fee for the first 2 statement cycles. After that, in order to waive the $30 monthly service fee you need the combined average balance of your eligible linked accounts to be: $50,000 or more for all linked deposit and retirement accounts OR$100,000 or more across all your eligible linked Citi accounts, excluding a first mortgage with Citibank OR$250,000 or more if your Citibank first mortgage is included in the total relationship.
For most people, I think the 20,000 ThankYou point offer will be the easier one to qualify for if you have $6,000 to move over there instead of an online savings account earning only 1% APY. $6,000 would only earn $60 over an entire year, at that rate. Even it takes 6 months to get your $200 bonus, that’s a 6.67% annualized return.

I thought that the Citigold might be doable since the monthly fees are waived for the first two months, but I saw in the fine print that the points might take another 90 days to post and your account must be open until then. This option would only work well if you have a mortgage with Citi.

The bonus ThankYou Points will be credited to your ThankYou Member Account within 90 days from the end of the statement period in which you satisfy all offer requirements. New checking account must be open and in good standing at the time the bonus ThankYou Points are posted to your ThankYou Member Account.

Afterwards, if you wish, you can downgrade to the Basic Account which offers a way to avoid monthly fees with no minimum balance, if you make 5 “qualified transaction” activities per month (direct deposits, debit card purchase, bill payment, ACH payments, checks paid, ATM withdrawals).

Update: Citibank has updated their checking account to have different restrictions starting with statements ending on 12/9/2011.
Find more in Banking, Deals & Offers | 10/4/11, 5:09am | Trackback

View the original article here

Grocery Store Deals and Coupon Match Ups Roundup: Harris Teeter, Marsh, Superfresh, Butera + More

You can now find grocery deals and coupon match ups for over 100 stores across the country right here on Common Sense with Money. So even if you just have the online savings account, you can deposit checks into it via scanner from home. I’ve updated my review below accordingly.)

It’s been a few months since I opened up an Ally interest checking account to complement my existing 5-year CDs and online savings account. Click here for a rundown of features that show why I made the switch. I’ve managed to try out many of their “perks”, including their official Perks program. Here are my experiences:

Unlimited ATM Rebates Anywhere in US
I’ve made a few ATM withdrawals at random ATMs, and the surcharges have been credited at the end of the month as promised. (I wish they were credited immediately.) Actually being charged those fees made me realize how fast $2-$5 a pop can add up. My fee rebates were almost higher than the interest I earned one month! I actually feel bad making Ally pay for something I could avoid, so whenever possible I still use my local bank’s ATM card for now. International ATMs are not eligible.

Free Overdraft Transfers from Savings
The checking account pays less interest than savings, so it is best to open both and keep as much money as you can in the savings. The Ally online saving account currently pays APY, and is one of the places I keep my emergency fund cash. With their free Overdraft Transfer Service, Ally will automatically transfer the required funds from savings if your checking goes negative. I actually initiated this last month when I wrote a check, here’s the screenshot from my account:

Ally transferred an amount equal to a round number near the overdraft amount plus $100. Alternatively, you can set it to auto-transfer a preset amount over if your checking balance dips to a certain threshold.

eCheck Online Deposit
Ally eCheck Deposit is a feature where you can scan in your checks over the internet with a desktop scanner. A smartphone camera-based app is supposedly in the works. This is now available on all interest checking, online savings and money market accounts. I have made multiple deposits successfully on a Mac after following their instructions carefully. (On Mac OS X, users have to use 32 bit mode for Firefox or Safari and Javascript. Chrome is always 32-bit.)

The process is straightforward. You must endorse your check with your signature, the phrase “For Ally eCheck Deposit Only”, and your account number. You can also deposit directly into your Online Savings account. The funds availability policy is such that checks submitted before 4pm Eastern will post the next business day, otherwise the 2nd business day. Your deposit starts earning interest as soon as the check posts, although for large deposits you may have a hold preventing immediate withdrawal.

Ally Perks Debit Card Rewards
This is a free rewards program that is linked to your Ally Checking debit card. It’s not a % cashback program on everything like that offered at PerkStreet Financial, but instead is more of a coupon-style service that works at specific online or brick-and-mortar merchants. I did see a few opportunities for some easy savings, for example $1 off a $1 minimum purchase at iTunes, $5 off $50 at Lowe’s in-store, and $2 off $7 at Subway.

You don’t need any coupons or codes, just pay with the Ally debit card and the discount amount is deposited directly into your checking account. I plan on checking in from time to time for any useful discounts, but this program certainly won’t convince me to buy things on their debit card. I’ll stick with credit card rewards.
Find more in Banking | 10/26/11, 6:43pm | Trackback

View the original article here

Saving Pennies or Dollars? Making Your Own Salsa

Alexis writes in: My husband and I go through a jar of salsa a week. Problem is, the brands without high fructose corn syrup average $2.79 at our grocery store. Would it be cheaper to make our own? Since tomato season is about to end on the East Coast, would canned tomatoes make a difference in the DIY route?

I’m with you on avoiding the high fructose corn syrup in salsas. I try to avoid it in everything I eat. The human body doesn’t need it, to say the least.

Of course, when you make that choice, prices go up. As you mention, it’s pretty tough to find salsa in the store without corn syrup in it for under $3 per jar.

But how much does it cost to make salsa at home? I like Alton Brown’s simple salsa recipe, so I’ll use that as an example. It contains:

6 Roma tomatoes, chopped
4 garlic cloves, minced
2 seeded and minced jalapenos, plus 2 roasted, skinned and chopped jalapenos
1 red bell pepper, fine dice
1/2 red onion, fine chopped
2 dry ancho chiles, seeded, cut into short strips and snipped into pieces
1 tablespoon olive oil
1 lime, juiced
Chili powder, salt, and pepper, to taste
Fresh scallions, cilantro or parsley, to taste

I went to the local grocery store and price-checked these items, using a few simple substitutions (like diced tomatoes for the Romas). I came up with a total of $4.40.

I then made a batch of this and found that it made a volume of salsa equal to about two and a half typical salsa jars. I saved it fresh in the refrigerator.

So, my cost per jar of making it from scratch is about $1.80. This assumes, of course, that I keep it fresh in the refrigerator and don’t can it. If I choose to can it, the cost is going to start approaching that of just buying a jar in the store.

My conclusion is that if you’re just making some fresh salsa for a party or something, it’s cheaper to make good salsa yourself. However, if you’re making it to can, you’re going to want to think about your approach carefully.

Of course, there’s one big key to all of this: the garden. If you have a garden that can provide you some or all of the ingredients in the recipe, your salsa is going to be less expensive whether you can it or not.

For example, pulling just the tomatoes and a bell pepper from one’s own garden drops the price of ingredients by about half. Plus, your salsa will taste better. This saves dollars, not pennies, and it saves your taste buds, too.

View the original article here

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://mdconline-financialreview.blogspot.com/2011/10/saving-pennies-or-dollars-making-your.html' title='Saving Pennies or Dollars?
